• Google Just Patched 43 Security Vulnerabilities in Android
    lifehacker.com
Google's first Pixel Drop of 2025 happened this week with a long list of upgrades for the company's flagship phones, tablets, and watches. Google followed the update closely with the March 2025 Android Security Bulletin, with fixes for 43 malicious bugsincluding two zero-day vulnerabilities that may actively be under "limited, targeted exploitation" on devices running Android OS.The patches cover concerns ranging from flaws that allow attackers to gain remote code execution on vulnerable devices to issues with Qualcomm and MediaTek components. The two zero-day (highest severity) exploits are labeled CVE-2024-43093 and CVE-2024-50302, both of which are "privilege escalation" flaws. According to Bleeping Computer, the former lets attackers access sensitive data by bypassing a file path filter without any additional input from the user. The latter is an issue in the Linux kernel that allows the unlocking of confiscated devices (and has reportedly been used by Serbian law enforcement to target activists). Zero-days are security vulnerabilities that are publicly disclosed before the developer has an opportunity to issue a patch. Even if the current exploitation is limited to these Serbian authorities, it's important to protect your devices before additional bad actors take advantage of these flaws as well. How to ensure your Android device is updatedIn most cases, all you need to do to fix security flaws on Android is update your device when you receive a notification to do so. Google issues patches for its own Pixel phones and the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code, and also alerts other manufacturerslike Samsung, Motorola, and OnePluswhen updates are on their way. Devices running Android 10 and later may get both security updates and Google Play system updates. The current batch of patches applies to AOSP versions 12, 12L, 13, 14, and 15, and the most recent is dated 2025-03-05. If you're not sure whether your Android device has been updated or believe you may have missed the notification, head to your device settings to locate your Android version (About phone or About tablet > Android version) and check your update status (System > Software update or System update). Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install available patches.

  • Apples Best New Chipset Isnt the M4 Max
    lifehacker.com
Aside from the launch of the sky blue M4-powered MacBook Air, this week's flurry of Apple announcements saw the introduction of the most powerful Apple silicon desktop processor yet. Given Apple's numbering scheme for its own chipsets, you'd think that would be one with an M4 label attached, but it's actually the M3 Ultra, which will power the newest Mac Studio.Since Apple started releasing its own chipsets with the M designation, we've seen a variety of different labels attached. First came the standard processor, then the Pro, then the Max, and then the Ultra, with performance improving with each iteration. We're now up to the M4 Max and the M3 Ultra. When preordering directly from Apple, you can fit the latest Mac Studio with either the M4 Max or the M3 Ultra, but the latter's superior capabilities are evident in the pricing: The starting price of an M3 Ultra Mac Studio is double that of an M4 Max Mac Studio. The M3 Ultra is available in the new Mac Studio. Credit: Apple Here's what's going on: As with previous generation chipsets with the Ultra moniker, the M3 Ultra is essentially two M3 Max processors fused together and appearing as one, using a technique Apple calls UltraFusion. You're basically getting twice the performance: This piece of silicon features an incredible 184 billion transistors. So many coresHere are some more stats: The M3 Ultra offers up to 32 CPU cores (compared to 24 on its most comparable predecessor, the M2 Ultra. It sports up to 80 CPU cores (compared to 76 on the M2 Ultra), 32 neural cores (the same as the M2 Ultra), support for up to 512GB of memory (compared to 192GB on the M2 Ultra), and up to 819GB/s of memory bandwidth (compared to 800GB/s). Overall, performance is around 1.5x of the Apple M2 Ultra. While the M2 Ultra chipset is the direct forebear to the M3 Ultra, if you're buying a Mac Studio, you'll be choosing between the M3 Ultra to the M4 Maxthe latter being the processor that launched last year with the refreshed MacBook Pros. The M4 Max gives you up to 16 CPU cores, up to 40 GPU cores, 16 neural cores, support for up to 128GB of memory, and up to 546GB/s of memory bandwidth. One of the benefits of the M3 Ultra supporting so much RAMmore than half a terabyteis that users can run more powerful AI models locally, on their own machines. A Mac Studio with an M3 Ultra inside should have enough oomph to run something like DeepSeek R1 locally, without having to connect to servers in China. Apple's two latest chipsets, compared. Credit: Apple The M3 Ultra also comes with a Thunderbolt 5 upgrade, doubling the maximum data transfer rates from Thunderbolt 4, up to 120Gb/s. This means you can even link multiple Mac Studios together (if you've got the budget for them), while the display engine on the M3 Ultra is capable of driving more than 160 million pixelsthe equivalent of eight Pro Display XDRs."M3 Ultra is the pinnacle of our scalable system-on-a-chip architecture, aimed specifically at users who run the most heavily threaded and bandwidth-intensive applications," says Johny Srouji, a senior vice president of hardware technologies at Apple. And what of the M4 Ultra? Apple hasn't said anything about it yet, but intimated to Ars Technica that it might not add an Ultra model this time around. That would make the M4 series the first to go without an Ultra variant, but as these super-powerful, super-expensive chipsets are only of interest to those with the most demanding needs and the deepest pockets, less frequent launches may be the most logical course of action.

  • Instagram is experimenting with a Discord-like community chat feature
    www.engadget.com
It seems that Instagram is working on a community chat feature that allows people to organize groups of up to 250 people in the app. The so-far unreleased feature was spotted by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who has a solid track record of uncovering new features within Metas apps.According to screenshots shared by Paluzzi, it seems that community chats will function similarly to Discord. Individual users can form the chats around specific topics and control who can join, though theres apparently a limit of 250 people per community. Unlike Instagrams broadcast channels, which allow creators to blast out messages to their followers, anyone who is in the community chat can participate in the conversation. There are also built-in moderation features. Admins can remove messages and members to keep the channel safe, the screenshot says. We also review Community Chat against our Community Standards. Its not clear when, or if, the feature may launch. An Instagram spokesperson described it as an internal prototype thats not being tested outside the company. But Meta has previously released similar features in its other apps. WhatsApp began experimenting with a Communities feature in 2022, and brought Community Chats to Facebook and Messenger later that same year. Mark Zuckerberg said at the time it was meant to help people find a new way to connect with people who share your interests. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/social-media/instagram-is-experimenting-with-a-discord-like-community-chat-feature-234832236.html?src=rss

  • The first private asteroid mission probe is probably lost in deep space
    www.engadget.com
It was a swing and a miss for the first private attempt at an asteroid mission, but the company is still chalking it up as a win. California startup AstroForge launched a spacecraft dubbed Odin on February 26, but the team lost communication with it shortly after its launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket."The chance of talking with Odin is minimal, as at this point, the accuracy of its position is becoming an issue," the company said in its extensive debrief of the mission. Technical issues occurred at its primary ground station in Australia, but AstroForge said that other problems also could have occurred on Odin to further prevent establishing contact.Although the launch was a bust, AstroForge maintained optimism about the project as a valuable learning experience for its eventual goal of creating and operating an asteroid mining vehicle. The company is targeting the asteroid 2022 OB5, with the aim of eventually landing on its surface and extracting potentially valuable resources. Odin was built in 10 months for $3.5 million, a sliver of the money and time federal space projects have taken to complete.AstroForge CEO Matt Gialich had several quotes in the debrief, all peppered with expletives, and he summed up the company ethos as, "At the end of the day, like, you got to fucking show up and take a shot, right? You have to try."This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/science/space/the-first-private-asteroid-mission-probe-is-probably-lost-in-deep-space-224803775.html?src=rss

  • How the gorge was made in The Gorge
    beforesandafters.com
Behind the visual effects by DNEG in the film. The premise of Scott Derricksons The Gorge involves two charactersLevi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy)finding themselves each responsible for the surveillance of a mysterious gorge, but on opposite sides of the chasm. For scenes of the characters in their watchtowers and around the top of the gorge, DNEG was tasked by production visual effects supervisor Erik Nordby for delivering the above-gorge environment. Production filmed the actors at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden. There was a strip of that pathway where Levi walks on the western edge, outlines DNEG visual effects supervisor Anelia Asparuhova. That pathway was practical, and the tops of the towers were practical, but everything else was CG. DNEG relied on LiDAR scans and texture photography from Norway to build the digital gorge asset. There was also some scanning that Erik Nordby did in Scotland that we used for the detailed level of the rocks, says Asparuhova. To build the gorge, we reasoned it would hypothetically be located in central Europe, and so we took ideas not only from Norway gorges but also ones in Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. Thats why you see that the forests were mostly coniferous, but also with a few deciduous trees sprinkled here and there to suggest that were in that north central part of Europe. We even hired a geologist in the first few weeks, adds Asparuhova. We were really, really adamant to make sure that, even though we were driving it artistically, we didnt want to build things that couldnt exist in nature. DNEG also delivered digital environments for scenes when the characters are in the surrounding forest, including for an action scene involving drones. We had some scenes, for example, notes DNEG visual effects supervisor Sebastian von Overheidt, where Drasa is hiding behind a tree. Shes running through the forest. Thered be maybe two real trees behind her, but the rest is all full-CG forest. We had to figure out the forest ground, the exact species of the trees, the exact look and color of the leaves and all those things. In addition to the gorge itself, and surrounding foliage, DNEG was responsible for generating a thick layer of fog around the gorges top. For that, advises Asparuhova, we did a few tests of what the fog was supposed to look like. The fog is almost like another character in the movie, and we went through a few different levels of density. We wanted to make sure that it wasnt too flat because obviously that is just not something very interesting to look at. But we did look at a lot of canyons with fog in them just to get some ideas of what that could look like. We wanted to make sure that it had enough motion in it, enough movement to keep it alive, but not to distract from the rest of the action. We had to build the gorge walls deep enough for it to not end up with any issues and any edges, continues Asparuhova. They were quite heavy renders because we had the fog, we had the waterfall and other elements.Close-up views of the fog, and moments that required fog interaction, had their own challenges. For instance, Levi ziplines over the other side of the gorge. For those shots of Levi going over the gorge, says von Overheidt, you get quite unusual steep angles into the fog. You see the transition where the fog meets the rockthe fall-off. We would add extra simulations to make sure we got a nice fall-off and nice detail. Then later for the quadcopters that rise from the fog, we had a different kind of problem to solve for those, as we are looking flat across the fog and we are right on top of it. At one point, Drasa jumps down into the gorge (and through the fog) after Levis zipline snaps. For that, says von Overheidt, we had the base fog volume and then added additional cloud simulation inside the fog as shes jumping through. For the jump itself, Anya Taylor-Joy performed the leap and then landed on a crash mat. DNEG took over Taylor-Joys jump with a digital version of the character. We followed the animation of her jumping off with a body track and very close shot sculpting, explains von Overheidt. We then transition into the full CG moment, which means were decoupled from the matchmove and were able to do our own camera move as the dive into the wispy foggy clouds takes place. Once out of the gorge, Levi and Drasa are pursued through the forest by quadcopter drones, which were crafted by DNEG. We had a practical reference of a one-to-one size model of the drones that they really threw down the forest, says von Overheidt. This was a good reference for lighting and how much dirt got kicked off. There was also some pyro going off that we could use as a reference. We then created a full clean plate of that scene, and a full CG forest behind the scene, and then had our drone assets tumble through with full FX simulation. Drasa and Levis actions invoke the Stray Dog protocol that results in a nuclear blast, triggered by a series of smaller explosions. DNEG looked at various pieces of footage from nuclear tests and blasts. We had to tailor-make an explosion to fit into the gorge, describes Asparuhova. All the explosions we had seen had been happening on flat ground, but here we had to look into the physics of it happening in a gorge. The explosion actually happens below. Normally, you would get the explosion, then you would have the shock wave, and it would obliterate everything. Our challenge was, how do we do this several hundred meters under and still make it look realistic? It also included the destruction of the towers, adds Asparuhova, which we had to break into pieces and then blow them away. There were trees we had to animate, too. We had some really interesting footage from real trees showing how they bend and how they start smoking with the explosion. In the end, it was first a bunch of smoke that comes out and then the shockwave hits and literally bends and obliterates everything in its way.The explosion is a massive moment in the film, of course, but DNEG was also responsible for other much more subtle moments. Asparuhova identifies the times when Levi and Drasa are peering at each other through their binoculars. For those shots, there was this subtlety required in terms of, how do you not obstruct the story? We had to show that these two are falling in love with each other, but we still had to show it as them looking through binoculars so that the audience understands whats happening. Sometimes its the subtle things that you have to spend a lot of time and a lot of thought on, just so that its as seamless as possible. • Mexico and Canada are frustrated by Trumps tariff-whiplash
    www.fastcompany.com
Mexican and Canadian officials are increasingly frustrated by tariff negotiations with the Trump administration, with a lack of clarity over exactly what the U.S. wants making any resolution seem impossible, sources from both countries told Reuters. After implementing across-the-board 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico earlier this week, President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a one-month reprieve for Mexico with an exemption for the North American auto sector also in the works. On Thursday, just after midday Eastern Time, tariffs remained in place for Canada. The on-again, off-again tariffs and the high-level discussions surrounding them have exasperated negotiating teams, according to three Mexican officials and two Canadian sources familiar with negotiations. Its like dealing with an angry partner and you dont know what theyre mad about, one Mexican official. Its not clear what they want. The press person for Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to a request for comment by directing Reuters to Sheinbaums public comment on Thursday. In a post on X, Sheinbaum said: We had an excellent and respectful call, that respected the sovereignties of both countries.Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeaus office and the White House both did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Trump based the legal justification for the tariffs on combating fentanyl and illegal immigration, but he and others in his administration often expand the justification to include trade deficits and protecting U.S. industries like autos and lumber.Despite the shared frustration of Mexico and Canada, the two countries have taken distinct tones in public. Sheinbaum has stressed her respect for Trump and the close cooperation with the U.S. Canada has bluntly criticized the chaos.Trudeau on Thursday said Canada will be in a trade war with the United States for the foreseeable future. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called Trudeau a numbskull.Trudeaus foreign minister has been even franker. We wont get through this, another psychodrama every 30 days, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly told business leaders in Toronto earlier this week. The problem weve had is its not clear what the American president wants, she added. Ive had conversations with colleagues in Washington saying, Okay, but at the end of the day, what do you guys want? And I got the answer, Were about to know. Theres one decision maker in the system. Hes the only one to know.U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick dismissed the idea that he didnt know what Trump wants as fake news and so silly in an interview on Thursday with CNBC.Trump calls everybody all the time, Lutnick said. I speak to him all the time. Youve got to be kidding me. The president knows exactly what he wants. We know exactly what he wants. But Canadian and Mexican officials said the lack of clarity over demands as well as uncertainty over whether Trump administration officials in bilateral meetings were actually able to deliver on what they said was making discussions incredibly challenging. The scope of negotiations is not clear, they said, with talks sometimes seeming to be focused on fentanyl and at other times on migration, while on some occasions the focus seemed to be trade deficits. The U.S. reasons for the tariffs constantly shift, said another Mexican official. If we cant identify the problem, we cant identify the solution.Emily Green, Jarrett Renshaw, David Ljunggren; writing by Stephen Eisenhammer, Reuters
