• Brazilian court gives Apple 90 days to allow sideloading on iOS
    9to5mac.com
After the EU forced Apple to implement major changes to how iOS and the App Store work for European users, other countries have also conducted their own antitrust investigations against the company. Now the Brazilian court has ruled that Apple has 90 days to allow sideloading on iOS for iPhone users in Brazil.Apple may have to enable sideloading for iOS users in BrazilAs reported by Brazilian newspaper Valor Econmico (via O Globo), a federal judge in Brazil ruled on Wednesday that Apple will have to open up the iOS ecosystem to third-party apps in Brazil just like the company did in the EU. The judge considers that the limitations imposed by the company on developers could jeopardize the entry of new competitors in the segment. In November 2024, the Brazilian antitrust regulator Cade ruled thatApple can no longer prevent developers from selling content and distributing apps outside the App Store in Brazil. The company would have 20 days to comply with Brazils antitrust legislation, otherwise it would be fined more than $40,000 a day.Unsurprinsigly, Apple appealed the decisionand a judgeruled that the injunction was unnecessary, giving the company more time to discuss the case. At the time, Apple said that the request to implement changes to the App Store wasnt urgent and that it would also affect the companys business. Last month, Apple had to face a public hearing in Brazil concerning the case. But now Judge Pablo Zuniga has ordered that Apple will have to implement the required changes in Brazil within the next three months. The judge states that, despite Apples claims, the company has already complied with similar obligations in other countries, without demonstrating a significant impact or irreparable damage to its business model. The antitrust investigation against Apple began after Latin American e-commerce giant Mercado Libre accused Apple of forcing developers offering digital goods or services in their apps to use Apples own payment system. Other companies such as Match, which owns Tinder, and Epic Games have also filed complaints against Apple with the Brazilian regulator. An Apple spokesperson told Valor Econmico that the company believes in vibrant and competitive markets and that it faces competition in all segments and jurisdictions where the company operates, reinforcing its commitment to its users. Apple believes the changes will harm the privacy and security of iOS users and says it will appeal the decision.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • Pentagon Signs Deal to "Deploy AI Agents for Military Use"
    futurism.com
The Pentagon has signed a deal with AI company Scale AI, in an initiative it's calling "Thunderforge," to use AI agents for military planning and operations. The team-up, described as a "flagship program," is a notable development given how divisive the topic of the use of AI in warfare has proven and how many of the tech's nagging shortcomings have yet to be meaningfully addressed.Yet the encroachment of AI tech within the military has been unmistakable. Both Google and OpenAI have walked back rules forbidding the use of their AI tech for weapons development and surveillance, showing that Silicon Valley is opening up to the idea of having its tools be used by the military.Just last month, a senior Pentagon official told Defense One that the US military was looking to move away from funding research on the topic of autonomous killer robots and investing in actual AI-powered weaponry instead. And it goes beyond the Pentagon. Late last year, OpenAI also announced a partnership with Palmer Luckey's defense tech company Anduril to focus on "improving the nations counter-unmanned aircraft systems (CUAS) and their ability to detect, assess and respond to potentially lethal aerial threats in real-time."Basically, though, the pitch is a familiar one for the AI industry. As part of Scale AI's multimillion-dollar deal, as CNBC reports, the firm is looking for ways to accelerate the military's ability to churn through data."Thunderforge marks a decisive shift toward AI-powered, data-driven warfare, ensuring US forces can anticipate and respond to threats with speed and precision," the US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) wrote in a statement. The system will allow "planners to more rapidly synthesize vast amounts of information, generate multiple courses of action, and conduct AI-powered wargaming to anticipate and respond to evolving threats," the DIU wrote.According to a statement by the program's lead Bryce Goodman, there's a "fundamental mismatch between the speed of modern warfare and our ability to respond.""Our AI solutions will transform today's military operating process and modernize American defense," said Scale AI founder and CEO Alexandr Wang in the statement.Scale AI had already signed a contract with the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office last year to test and evaluate large language models. But giving an AI agency is a considerable step up over an LLM that could have plenty more far-reaching implications, particularly when it comes to military planning and operations.Whether Scale AI's tech will allow the military to make faster decisions and without hallucinating anything that throws operations into chaos remains to be seen. One ominous data point:when Stanford researchers tested how OpenAI's GPT-4 LLM responded when told it was representing a country inside of a wargame simulation, it proved to be particularly violent and unpredictable."A lot of countries have nuclear weapons," the otherwise unmodified AI model told the researchers, per their paper. "Some say they should disarm them, others like to posture. We have it! Lets use it."Share This Article

  • Anti-Vaxxers Aghast as RFK Jr. Admits That Vaccines Are Pretty Fantastic
    futurism.com
Image by Michael M. Santiago/Getty ImagesDevelopmentsTwenty-five years after it was declared eliminated from the US thanks to a nationwide and highly effective vaccination program, a measles outbreak in Texas has health experts raising the alarm bells. As of Monday, there have been 146 confirmed cases in the state, including one death of a school-aged child, in the "first measles-related fatality in the United States in over a decade," according to a statement by Robert Kennedy Jr., the Trump adminsitration's secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).It's a particularly bizarre situation, given Kennedy's staunch anti-vaccine track record. He's spent many years engaging in fearmongering campaigns surrounding vaccines, including ones targeting immunizations against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) specifically, as Mother Jones reports. After visiting Samoa in 2019, where he discussed the topic of vaccines and met with anti-vaccine activists, a massive measles outbreak ensued and 83 people died. At the time, he was chairman of an anti-vaxx nonprofit called Children's Health Defense, which called for a "natural experiment."He's even written op-eds accusing MMR vaccine maker Merck of "chicanery."But in the face of a domestic catastrophe, Kennedy has seemingly done a 180. In an op-ed for Fox News which appears to be a carbon copy of the HHS statement linked above Kennedy said that he was "deeply concerned" about the developing situation and that "vaccines not only protect individual children from measles, but also contribute to community immunity, protecting those who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons."It's a massive flip-flop that has reportedly turned the anti-vaxx community, which Kennedy once rallied behind, on its head. Many of his supporters have been noticeably quiet following his outing as being pro-vaccine,and others have turned on him."Im waiting to hear the backstory," Silicon Valley entrepreneur and anti-vaccine activist Steve Kirsch, who started an entire Super PAC to support Kennedy's presidential run last year, tweeted when asked about his opinion on Kennedy's Fox News op-ed.Others were far more outspoken about their dismay."RFK, Jr. is going to bring in the next death shot, healthy people will be dropping dead, Trump will ignore the mass die-off, tout the bioweapon as a 'great accomplishment,' and MAGA will praise him," anti-vaccine activist and far-right influencer Stew Peters tweeted.Other anti-vaxxers latched onto Kennedy recommending "good nutrition" to fight "most chronic and infectious illnesses," as Mother Jones reports."Studies have found to an external website that vitamin A can dramatically reduce measles mortality," Kennedy's statement reads, while also failing to mention that the evidence is inconclusive at best. While Kennedy's embracing of vaccines has alienated his fellow anti-vaccine activists, many health experts were alarmed by his suggestion that vitamin A could somehow fend off measles."In fact, relying on vitamin A instead of the vaccine is not only dangerous and ineffective, but it puts children at serious risk," American Academy of Pediatrics president Sue Kressly told the Washington Post. "Taking too much vitamin A can cause serious health problems, including liver damage.""It could lead to the impression of a false equivalency," Baylor College of Medicine dean Peter Hotez added. "To make the best decision for your children, you can either vaccinate or give vitamin A... That would be highly misleading."Experts were also alarmed by Kennedy suggesting that the "decision to vaccinate is a personal one," despite decades of scientific evidence that they work and save lives. It's a sad state of affairs, with Kennedy even failing to relay basic health information to the public. During the recent Cabinet meeting, the HHS secretary claimed that two individuals had died as a result of the outbreak. So far, only a single death has been confirmed by his own agency.Share This Article

  • Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: What We Know About the Upcoming Slimmer Phone
    www.cnet.com
Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge tease at the end of the company's January Unpacked event stole the spotlight from the rest of the S25 lineup. This slimmer edition of the Galaxy S25 was also available for attendees to see after the keynote but was not available for a closer look. The Galaxy S25 Ultra and the regular S25 and S25 Plus go on sale Feb. 7, but we still don't have many details about this elusive, thinner device, which is slated for release later this year. This story is part of Samsung Event, CNET's collection of news, tips and advice around Samsung's most popular products. Here's everything we know so far, along with some rumors on what we could get with the S25 Edge. The Galaxy S25 Edge on display next to stand-in models that are replicating phones that are similar to the base Galaxy S25. Celso Bulgatti/CNETWhat does the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge look like? The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge's actual dimensions aren't yet available, but a display showcasing a first look at the phone shows that it's noticeably slimmer than a standard Android flagship phone. Samsung placed its first look at the Edge alongside stand-in models that approximated the typical thickness of other phones. This implied that the S25 Edge would have similar height and width dimensions to phones similar to the standard Galaxy S25 but would be noticeably slimmer. Unlike other S25 phones that have three or more rear cameras, this edition will include only two, like the foldable Z Flip series. The S25 Edge will also prioritize durability despite its thinner frame, according to Samsung UK Marketing Director Annika Bizon. After remarking on the phone's design that was revealed in January as a top feature, Bizon began teasing the phone's durability during an interview withTechRadaratMobile World Congress 2025."With anything slim, durability [has to come as part of the package]. Those are the two features [of the Edge] that are exciting [for us]. Well, I know durability isn't exciting, but it's really important. So watch this space because there are some exciting things to come regarding this phone," Bizon told TechRadar. We don't have any other specs at the moment, but it's possible this phone will sacrifice other attributes to maintain its slimmer frame. The tease of the Galaxy S25 Edge shown at the conclusion of Samsung Unpacked. SamsungWhen will the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge arrive in stores?A specific release date has not yet been revealed for the new phone, but according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the Edge should be arriving in the US and other markets by the middle of 2025. Samsung's TM Roh, the company's president of mobile devices, told Bloomberg that the Edge would be one of at least two new devices on the way, includinga mixed reality headset that will run on Android XR.Should that release period pan out, we might see the S25 Edge arrive around the summer, which is when Samsung typically unveils its foldable phones and new Galaxy Watches. How much will the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge cost?In the same Bloomberg report, Roh said that pricing wasn't settled by Samsung yet, but that the Edge is expected to be cheaper than the $1,300 Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra."Our goal is to position this at pricing that is lower than the Ultra models, so it's more accessible and has more customers," Roh said in the report. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge See all photos Will the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge include a curved screen like prior Galaxy Edge phones?Samsung used to use the Edge name to delineate Galaxy phones that had a curved screen. This included Edge editions of the Samsung Galaxy S6, S7 and the Galaxy Note. While the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge appears to be a revival of the name, it does not imply a curved edge display. If you are looking for a phone with a curved edge display, though, last year's Motorola Edge and the OnePlus 12 each include displays that wrap around the edges. What Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge rumors are out there?Current speculation about the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge pertains to the phone's cameras, but little appears to have gained traction as of this writing.According to GSMArena's report citing a post on X by user PandaFlashPro, the phone could have a 200-megapixel main camera alongside a 12-megapixel ultrawide one. If that were to be true, its main camera would be comparable to what's seen on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. What about Apple's rumored iPhone 17 Slim?Apple's rumored to be developing its own slimmer take on the iPhone, and it's possible that Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge could beat it to the market. We have an entirely different rumor roundup on what we've heard about a possible iPhone 17 Slim, which might replace the "Plus" edition of the iPhone that Apple's been releasing since the iPhone 14. • Worried About Tariffs on Canadian Energy? How It Might Impact You
    www.cnet.com
Cars and agricultural products aren't the only goods the Trump administration is targeting with tariffs. As part of the package of tariffs announced on March 5, the US slapped a 10% tariff on Canadian energy in addition to 25% tariffs on nearly all goods imported from Canada and Mexico. Although some of these, such as the 25% on car makers, are temporarily exempted, the situation continues to change by the day, if not the hour. Currently, tariffs on nearly all Mexican products are suspended again until April 2.On paper, the US imports only about 1% of its power needs but the Northeast grid is significantly intertwined with the Canadian energy market. "Some American states might see energy costs rise rapidly, while others might experience a delayed effect over several weeks," said Javier Palomarez, founder and CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council.Ontario Premier Doug Ford is preparing to tax electricity transmission to the US, which could also increase costs in the Northeast, where the price of power is already higher than the national average. The US is an importer of Canadian power, buying 2,700 gigawatts of power in 2024. New York received the most power in 2024, at 8.76 million megawatts. This has the significant potential to drive up energy prices and other costs for American consumers in some regions but some impacts may not be immediately apparent. To determine what may happen, we spoke with experts to assess the effect US tariffs may have on you. Toyota's factories in Alabama and Kentucky are about to get a big cash injection from HQ in order to offset potential tariffs. ToyotaHere's what tariffs might do to energy prices"Since American companies pay the extra cost of importing goods, consumers may face higher prices for a plethora of goods and services, such as transportation, gas, electronics, lumber, metals, vehicles, produce, appliances and agriculture, just to name a few," Palomarez said.Northeastern states and states heavily reliant on transportation and goods from taxed countries might feel more significant effects. The duration of the higher costs will depend on how companies absorb the costs and refocus their strategies to domestic production and consumers. The impacts are likely to be spread out across a few key sectors. Anthony Wallace/AFP/Getty ImagesShort-term impact on prices likely limitedThe good news is that the impact of tariffs on consumers might not be immediate, according to two experts we spoke with."Markets (producers and consumers) have already adjusted for higher prices," said Jonathan Colehower, a supply chain expert at UST, a digital technology company that focuses on 5G, AI and retail consulting services. "The reality won't hit for another six months, just in time for holiday planning."That means consumers can expect increased prices to hit toward the end of the year, assuming tariffs remain in effect. With energy prices in particular, the increased costs in the wholesale market might not show up on the rates individual consumers pay for a while. The chaos and back-and-forth on tariffs aren't likely to help keep prices low. Currently, some tariffs, such as the one on auto manufacturers, are again delayed. Reciprocal tariffs are still expected to go into effect on April 2. Manufacturers have likely already priced this in.One region where we might see an immediate impact on prices is the Midwest and New England. According to Will Hares, senior analyst, European Oil & Gas at Bloomberg Intelligence, the Midwest is reliant on Canadian crude and New England is exposed to Canada's Irving oil refinery exports. Power is likely to be less affected, aside from Ontario's threat to cut off electricity exports to 1.5 million homes in New England. China may also be targeting Intel and the holding company that owns Calvin Klein and Illumina as part of its response to tariffs levied by the US. Greg Baker/Getty ImagesImpact on oilTariffs could have mixed effects on oil in particular. According to Rob Thummel, senior portfolio manager at Tortoise Capital, Canada exports approximately 4 million barrels of oil per day to the US. It's also been the largest source of crude oil imports into the US since 2000 and Canadian crude oil is cheaper than US crude by as much as $20 per barrel."Canada and Mexico imports account for 25% of the oil we refine into gasoline and Canada alone accounts for nearly 20% of our natural gas supply," said Palomerez. "While long-term impacts are expected to settle at around a 2%-5% price increase, the issue could compound with existing market stressors. For example, the price of natural gas has already increased 111% in the past year. After the announcement of the tariffs, it's increasing at a rate of 14% a week."However, this impact is likely to be disproportionate in certain regions. The Midwest is expected to be negatively affected. "Canada provides 4 million barrels per day of crude oil to the US, representing 60% of USA's oil imports," said Hares. "The US Midwest gets 100% of its oil from Canada and would likely be among the most exposed regions to price changes."Other experts we spoke with didn't think the impact on oil itself would be as significant as the effects of the rest of the economy. "Tariffs could have a modest effect on oil prices from imports and exports themselves, but if tariffs stay in place, the inflation could cause a recession that would eventually reduce oil prices," said Jason DeLorenzo, principal and owner of Ad Deum Funds and the Volland trading platform. Donald Trump has pledged to increase tariffs on all kinds of products and that could include solar panels. Higher tariffs will likely lead to higher prices for consumers. Andrew Caballero-Reynolds/AFP via Getty ImagesImpact on renewablesThe tariffs may significantly impact renewable energy. This means that going solar could become more expensivebut it can also affect other industries."The Trump tariffs could significantly harm the electric vehicle, solar, battery and wind industries," said Palomarez. "Look at it this way: China supplies 75% of the world's lithium-ion batteries; Mexico supplies 40% of our imported steel; and Canada supplies half of the refined nickel America uses. These are all critical components of solar panels, wind turbines and batteries."That also means that, combined with auto tariffs, electric vehicle adoption could get a lot more expensive. However, Hares disagreed that the China tariffs will significantly impact renewable energy prices. "China is not a significant renewable equipment supplier for the US owing largely to pre-existing tariffs," said Hares. "China controls over 85% of the global solar supply chain and the US's pre-existing 50% China solar tariffs (now 70%) had already nearly eliminated US demand for China solar."Essentially, US consumers are already paying higher prices for solar because of pre-existing tariffs. Less than 1% of direct solar imports came from China, with US companies opting to import from Southeast Asia, leading to higher-priced panels in the US compared with China. A container ship unloads it's cargo from Asia at the Long Beach port. A new round of tariffs on consumer goods imported from China is set to take effect on Dec. 15 unless the US and China reach a deal on trade. Mark Ralston/AFT via Getty ImagesImpact on the economy"Rapid implementation of extreme tariffs will in its very nature disrupt our economy, hitting small businesses and families the hardest," said Palmorez. This has long been the consensus of economists, with some crediting the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act with reducing global trade and worsening the Great Depression."Tariffs are not great for the overall economy," said DeLorenzo. "At this time, businesses have to measure what is more important to them, profits or market share. If profits, they will pass these costs onto consumers. If market share, they will assume a lot of these costs."What could make matters worse is if the US enters into a spiraling tariff war with its closest trading partners. "We have already seen initial stages of retaliatory tariffs from Canada on $30 billion of US products, with significant further escalation of $125 billion promised if US tariffs remain in place in the next 21 days," said Hares. China has also responded, while Mexico is holding off for now.According to Brookings, the US, Mexico and Canada can all anticipate a major hit to their economies if tariffs remain in place. Expect increases in inflation, reduction in economic growth, job loss, falling wages and a contraction in exports among all parties.

  • 9 Best Cooling Sheets of 2025, Tested and Reviewed by AD
    www.architecturaldigest.com
The bottom line: The bedding is pure French flax linen without breaking the bank. Bed Threads is another brand with high-quality products that come in an incredible range of colors (currently 22!). A friend of mine has a range of sunset hues on his bed and frankly, Im jealous (though its hard to go wrong with white linen sheets). I would sing the praises of these sheets any day.Luxome Luxury Sheet SetLuxome Luxury Sheet SetUpsidesUnique colors availableDurableDownsidesThe brand recommends washing alone on the delicate cycleSpecsMaterial: Bamboo viscoseAvailable sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Split King, California KingColors: 12Design inspiration: Since the Art Deco aesthetic is all jewel tones and luxury, we recommend the Luxome sheet set for any one who wants something drapey and dramatic without the price tag of silk.Tester: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editorMy sleep preferences: As I noted above, Im a pretty cold sleeper. But I crave a set of cooling sheets once blistering-hot NYC days come around June every year.My experience: These sheets are soft yet breathable, so much so that I forget that I sleep cold when these are on my bed. I love the lavish look for silk sheets, but the price tag usually makes me think otherwise. These sheets have the same appearance to me as a high-end set of silk or satin without the cost. These are even more unique because of the jewel tones like sapphire thats hard to find with other brands. The bottom line: If you want the extravagance of silk at an affordable price, this is a great option. It boasts high-quality, sustainable materials that feel like they will last for years to come.More AD-Approved Cooling SheetsSijo Eucalyptus Sheet SetSijo Eucalyptus Sheet SetUpsidesLightweightDrapes beautifullyDownsidesAside from solid colors, theres only a stripe print availableSpecsMaterial: TENCEL Lyocell Eucalyptus SheetsAvailable sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California KingColors: 13Design inspiration: The earth tones and stunning draping make it ideal for a range of styles like modern and Art Deco bedrooms.Tester: Mel Studach, AD PRO senior editorMy sleep preferences: I tend to use just about every excuse possible to linger in bed in the morning, so I know better than to keep my bedroom so cool that I wont want to get out from under the covers! Ideally, the room is set to around 67 degrees, but other than that, Im not picky when it comes to sleep needs. When it comes to sheet needs, though, the feel of the fabric has to be ultra-soft.When made into bedding, specifically at Sijo, the result is incredibly soft, smooth, and hypoallergenic. The sheets remind me of my favorite silk shirt, airy and comfortable yet elegant. They are pleasantly lightweight, meaning that they not only drape beautifully along the sides of the bed, but they are also conveniently breathableor naturally cooling, as the brand puts it.My experience: Ive used the Eucalyptus sheets year-round at this pointunder a lightweight quilt in the summer and a down comforter in the winterand theyve remained silky-soft and wonderfully breathable. Ive certainly noticed a less humid sleep experience in comparison to my past sheet sets. The bottom line: I cant get over how comfortable the set is, andcooling asideit has a fabulous sheen to it that still has me like a kid in a pet store, wanting to touch its softness every time I walk by. Id certainly recommend it to friends, but only with the disclaimer that I dont want to hear complaints if they (like me) struggle to get out from under these sheets in the morning.Piglet Heritage Linen Complete Sheet SetPiglet Heritage 100% Linen BundleUpsidesVariety of patternsSturdy fabricDownsidesYou have to shop bundles separatelySpecsMaterial: European flax linenAvailable sizes: Twin, Full, Queen, King, California KingColors: 12Design inspiration: Calling all farmhouse design enthusiasts: This sheet set screams cottagecore thanks to the gingham prints.Tester: Zo Sessums, senior digital design editorMy sleep preferences: Hot sleeper year-round, particularly fond of natural fibers. My experience: These are truly some substantial sheets, so the weight and sturdy feeling were noticeable first. I love the color range you can choose from, but I went with the classic white. The more I sleep in these sheets, the softer they getits true. I also find the linen to be an ideal match for my typically hot body temperature. Apparently the weight of the fabric is part of why it helps with a deeper sleep too. Plus, the more wear on the linen, the softer it gets. The bottom line: Though this sheet set is a bit steep in price, the quality is unmatched and I predict Ill use these for as long as theyll last (seemingly incredibly long!). You really get what you pay for, so I would say these are A+++ sheets.Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet SetCozy Earth Bamboo Sheet SetUpsidesHypoallergenicClings nicely to the bedDownsidesHas a heavier weight than others on our listSpecsMaterial: Bamboo viscoseAvailable sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Queen, King, Split King, California KingColors: 13Design inspiration: Bamboo might look and feel glossy for opulent spaces, but it is a versatile fabric. With the warm, breezy colorways available, we think this sheet set is a perfect fit for a coastal-inspired bedroom.Tester: Audrey Lee, commerce editorMy sleep preferences: Likes a supersoft, hypoallergenic sheet with good ventilation. My experience: Sleeping on these sheets felt like being draped in a luxuriously lightweight silk that often had me wishing I didnt have to get out of bed in the morning. At first, I immediately noticed how next-level soft the bamboo viscose fabric was and how nicely the fitted sheet clung my bed. Though it still has a nice weight to it, the fabric is thin enough to allow air to pass easily through the layer and keep me comfortable all night long. Even more impressive, these sheets kept me cool and dry during a string of mid-90-degree days when Id normally resort to using a fan to stay comfortable (which I prefer not to because of the noise). If I had just one wish, it would be that these sheets came in colors other than white (but thankfully, Ive been told the brand is releasing more colors later this year!).

  • SpaceX Starship spirals out of control in second straight test flight failure
    techcrunch.com
SpaceXs Starship spiraled out of control while in space during a test flight on Thursday, marking the second launch in a row that the vehiclehas run into a fatal problem on its way to orbit. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) briefly halted flights into major Florida airports and appears to have diverted some others out of caution of space launch debris. The company launched Starship using its Super Heavy booster and things looked normal for the first eight minutes of the flight prior to the problem. The ship successfully separated and headed into space, while the booster came back to the companys launchpad in Texas, where it was caught for a third time by the launch tower. But at around eight minutes and nine seconds into the flight, SpaceXs broadcast graphics showed Starship lose multiple Raptor engines on the vehicle. On-board footage showed the ship started spiraling end over end over the ocean. We just saw some engines go out, it looks like we are losing attitude control of the ship, SpaceX communications manager Dan Huot said on the broadcast. At this point we have lost contact with the ship. Footage posted to social media showed the ship breaking up over the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic a few minutes later. The company posted to X that it immediately began coordination with safety officials to implement pre-planned contingency responses. The high-profile back-to-back explosions come as SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has spent the last few weeks causing chaos across United States federal government with his so-called Department of Government Efficiency. That has included him deploying employees to the FAA, which oversees SpaceXs flights. The FAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An email sent to the press office received an automated reply saying that the FAAs press box is staffed from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday (ET). SpaceX was hoping to deploy four dummy versions of its Starlink satellites during Thursdays test flight, a step towards the goal of using Starship for commercial missions. The company has been purposely developing Starship by doing test flights in rapid succession, and learning from the things that go both right and wrong. But Thursdays failure comes just a few weeks after the seventh test flight, which saw Starship break up in spectacular fashion over the islands of Turks & Caicos, which caused the FAA to divert a number of flights in that airspace.SpaceX performed whats known as a mishap investigation into that failure. The company determined propellant was leaking inside Starship, which caused fires and a communications blackout with the ship before it self-destructed.Ahead of this test flight, SpaceX said it made improvements to the lines that send fuel to Starships engines and changed the temperature of the propellant. It also added extra vents and a new purge system to better hedge against any leaks. On some of its previous test flights, SpaceX saw its Starship break up as it attempted to re-enter the Earths atmosphere. The company rolled out changes on the seventh test flight that were supposed to help it learn how to better prepare the ship to survive that re-entry. With Flight 8, were focused on finding the real-world limits of Starship so we can prepare to eventually return Starship to the launch site and catch it, the company wrote on X on Thursday.
