Dragonfly Aerospace Blue Ghost Lander on the MoonDragonfly AerospaceSpace-based and moon-based data centers are being created to support earth and outer space data processing requirements and to provide new data disaster recovery capabilities. Storing data on the Moon or even in near earth orbit has interest to governments, NGOs and commercial enterprises. Data storage in outer space provides an additional layer of data security against natural disasters, social upheavals and other threats to data integrity and longevity. We wrote about the Lonestar Data Holdings partnership with Flexential to test equipment for a moon based data center as well as sythetic DNA storage in the Blue Ghost Mission in January. The Blue Ghost Mission from Firefly Aerospace landed successfully on the moon on March 2 and has been performing various experiments on the moons surface since then. The synthetic DNA in the Blue Ghost Mission carries tokens and historical data and is encapsulated within a monument symbolizing humanitys achievements. The Intuitive Machines landing vehicle, containing the Lonestar Holdings Freedom data module made its lunar landing on March 6 and although radio communications works, it appears that the vehicle did not land flat on the surface and as a consequence there was concern whether it would be able to perform some of the planned experiments, including drilling for water near the moons Southern Pole, where it is believed that water ice from meteorite impacts may hide in craters that are sheltered from the sun. It is also not clear as of this writing, whether the Freedom data center module is fully functional.Phison partnered with Lonestar Data Holdings to provide SSD storage based upon the companys Pascari enterprise-grade storage solution for the Lonestar Freedom Mission. The SSDs are used for Backup and recovery for storing mission data. Phison said that this collaboration would ensure that the Freedom mission moves beyond technical innovation to unlock the future of interplanetary operations. It is hoped that with unique solar-power sourcing and natural cooling capabilities that the lunar data center design can maintain peak operational performance with minimal resource dependency.Lonestars ultimate goal for Freedom is to provide petabyte-scale long-term storage to support local data center needs as well as backup of important data on the Moons surface. Data center resources on the Moon will help with edge computing capability to support the upcoming Artemis manned missions to the Moon. Future manned missions further in space, such as Mars, could also benefit from outer space data centers that could support local lower latency processing than is possible for data sent to and from the earth.A series of data centers distributed in outer space or on other planetary bodies will also enable an extraterrestrial internet, which requires local data storage to cache data and messages locally so they can be transmitted to off-planet and earth transceivers when such transmission becomes possible. Creating a series of data centers between remote space data centers could also enable interplanetary distributed computing to better understand outer space and the solar environment that surrounds us on the earth.Recent landings of data center technologies including data storage and stored archives on the Moon are creating a path for the development of lunar and other extraterrestrial enterprises.

  • Severance Season 2, Episode 8 Recap And Review: Im Not Sure How I Feel About This One
    www.forbes.com
SeveranceCredit: AppleFor the first time since Ive been writing about Severance, I have to say I have mixed feelings. Season 2, Episode 8 (which has the peculiar title Sweet Vitriol) is an odd bottle episode, hot on the heels of last weeks bottle episode. Two bottles in a row is a tough sell in even the best show, and taking this much time away from the main story is an odd creative choice. Spoilers ahead. This was not a bad episode, by any means. But the big revelation at the very end leaves me feeling . . . unsettled, and not in a good way. Not in a ooh, cool twist way. In my spoiler-free review of the second season, I wrote: If I had to sum it up in one phrase, this would be it: Season 2 is not as tightly crafted. This is most apparent in the second half, when a couple of the episodes felt a little bottle-ish, disrupting the rhythm of the season as a whole. Im not sure if this will play better week-to-week instead of in a binge (I watched all ten screeners over the course of three or four days) but I admit I was a little thrown off by the decision to put two episodes in a row that felt very out-of-place with the rest of the season, grinding its momentum to a halt. I may feel differently on a second watch. At least one of these episodes ends with a big revelation that I wasnt particularly fond ofa choice that felt somewhat after-the-fact, used to expand one characters story in a way that I dont really find plausible, that felt perhaps lacked the narrative probity of the first season, or felt a little tacked-on. The other bottle episode gave us a lot of backstory, but never revealed the most important details the backstory was exploring. Both left me feeling unsatisfied.First off, I do feel differently on the second watch. I liked last weeks Gemma (Dichen Lachman) episode a great deal the second time around, and I think thats because I watched both these episodes back-to-back originally, and it was odd to have two episodes totally detached from the main story of Mark (Adam Scott) and the rest of the MDR crew in a row. I still think thats a bit odd in terms of structuring the season, but my second viewing of last weeks episode hit me in the feels more than the first time around. My second viewing of tonights episode made me appreciate the dreamlike nature of Harmony Cobels (Patricia Arquette) visit to her home town of Salts Neck.Side-note: Im not sure where this is supposed to be in the fiction, but right away I thought This looks like Newfoundland and on my second viewing I thought, This looks like the Bonavista area of Newfoundland and apparently that is where it was filmed. I visited Newfoundland and spent some time in Bonavista in 2019 and its truly a fascinating, beautiful, otherworldly place. There were no glaciers floating by when I visited, but it was in October rather than the dead of winter. In any case, I do find Harmonys odyssey compelling. Returning to a Lumon company town that was once thriving thanks to the local Lumon ether mill, only to find it dying, its people older and more frail as Cobel puts it, reveals a great deal about Lumons past. The town is sick. Many of its inhabitants are ether addicts now. Almost all of them are deeply anti-Lumon. Only one remains loyal to Lumon: Harmonys aunt, Sissy, who lives alone on a rocky peninsula outside of town. We learn that she still lives by the nine which makes her a pariah in the community. We also learn that Ms. Huang (Sarah Bock) is not the only child employed by Lumon. When Harmony stops by a cafe to speak with an old friend, Hampton (James Le Gros) we learn that both of them once worked in the ether mill as children. Child labor is very much one of Lumons many insidious practices. Theres another connection to Ms. Huang here: When Cobel was young, she was also a Wintertide Fellow. Earlier in the season, Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) says to Ms. Huang, "You cannot graduate from this fellowship until I have deemed you wintertide material." It appears that Lumon youth deemed to have a great deal of potential are offered a special track with this Wintertide Fellowship, though the details of it and the rest of the child labor force remain fuzzy.Cobel returns to her childhood home with the help of Hampton, a man who now peddles ether to the local addicts, who hides her in the back of his truck in case Lumon has people watching the house. This sounds paranoid, but we learn that Mr. Drummond (lafur Darri lafsson) has phoned Sissy, and at the end of the episode a vehicle approaches as Cobel speeds away. Hampton stays back apparently to hold them off. Tame these tempers, he says grimly as the headlights approach. We learn a few things at Cobels childhood home. First, that her mother died after a long illness once she was taken off her life-support machine. Cobel blames Sissy for this, telling her she would have taken care of her mother if she hadnt been away from school. I didnt even get to say goodbye, she tells Sissy, a mixture of grief and rage warring inside her. Or perhaps a more apt phrasing: Woe and Malice. We also learn that Cobel was deemed worthy of the Wintertide Fellowship after proving how industrious she was as an apprentice at the factory. Her schooling was more important than being able to see her dying mother, at least according to Sissy, who is the most fanatical Lumon acolyte weve seen outside of the Eagans themselves at this point. It was Sissy who molded Harmony into what she eventually became; her mother was anti-Lumon through and through. But the biggest and most profound and story-altering revelation comes at the end, when we learn that it was actually Harmony Cobel who invented the severance procedure. And the Overtime Continency. And the Glasgow Block. All of it was her invention, her idea, her work and Jame Eagan (Michael Siberry) took the credit. Not only did he take the credit, Lumon forced Cobel to keep quiet about it or face banishment. Sissy attempts to burn the papers with Cobels designs, but she grabs them back in time. Here is where I become deeply divided - severed, if you will - on this twist. On the one hand, its kind of a cool twist. Jame Eagan is a fraud. Severance wasnt cooked up by the all-mighty, all-knowing Eagans at all, but by one of their lackeys. On the other hand, a nagging doubt has entered my brain. This means that Cobel isnt just a ruthless middle-manager and a (now straying) Lumon devotee. Shes also a brilliant scientist! This is . . . weird. For one thing, I liked Cobels role just the way it was. I dont know that I really like learning that shes actually a brilliant scientist who came up with all of this. Theres a chosen one aspect to this shift that bugs me. Cobel as the fanatical Lumon soldier and frankly bizarre MDR floor manager (as well as her weird Mrs. Selvig persona) was pretty much perfect. It makes sense that, once rebuked and cast out by Lumon, she would have a crisis of faith and turn on the company she was once so devoted to, and we really didnt need this backstory to flesh that out. Now Cobel is an entirely different character with a much more vital, fundamental part in the story of the severance procedure and its implications. This alone is a lot to swallow, but theres a part of me that keeps thinking this was a change made after Season 1 was already out. This was something not in the story from day-one, but tacked on as a twist for Season 2. It just doesnt quite fit as organically in the story as everything else, and it worries me. It worries me because even though I know theres always an element of making it up as you go when it comes to TV shows, I dont want this one to go off the rails like so many others before it, and this moment feels a little off the rails to me.I also preferred severance as something of a mystical technology. It didnt need an inventor or an explanation. In the end, Cobel takes the call from Devon (Jen Tullock) and learns that Mark is reintegrating. She asks her to put him on the phone and says, Tell me everything as the music picks up and she drives her pickup into the night, back toward Kier and back toward the main story that weve left lingering in the wings for the past two weeks. Just two episodes left, dearest readers. What fresh new hell awaits? What did you think about this (very short) Cobel-centric episode? It appears that Marks reintegration is no longer going forward, so hell go into the final two episodes of the season only mostly reintegrated. What will that mean for his psyche? And will they go through with Devons plan to use the birthing cabin to talk with Marks innie? So many questions, so little time.Let me know your thoughts on Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky or Facebook. • She returned to work after surviving cancer but resigned a week later. Now, as a laundromat owner, she's her own boss.

2025-03-07T01:14:07Z Read in app Low Seow Yee left her job at a government agency to open a laundromat business in Singapore. Amanda Goh This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? In 2023, a breast cancer diagnosis reframed Low Seow Yee's perspective on life. She decided to quit her job at a government agency to open Hangout Laundry, a laundromat, in Singapore.Laundromats are often touted as a passive income business, but she's hosting parties and making laundry fun again. When Low Seow Yee went for her routine yearly mammogram in March 2023, she wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary. But a few weeks later, she received a letter requesting that she come in for a follow-up. A biopsy revealed that she had stage one breast cancer. The next few months passed by in a blur. Her bosses at the government agency where Low Seow Yee left her job at a government agency to open a laundromat business in Singapore. Amanda Goh "It was on my first day back at work when I realized, 'Oh no, I really don't want to do this,'" Low, now 46, told Business Insider. She handed in her resignation the following week. Her medical scare had reframed her perspective on life. She had always been working for people first in the events and F&B industries early in her career, and then in a marketing role for a government agency and she wanted to try something new."It occurred to me that if I keep on doing this, I don't know I feel like maybe I'm missing out on some experiences in life," the mother of three said. From federal employee to small-business ownerIn December 2024, Low and her husband opened Hangout Laundry, a 24-hour self-service laundromat in Bedok, a neighborhood in the eastern region of Singapore. Hangout Laundry is located in Bedok, a neighborhood in the eastern region of Singapore. Amanda Goh Low was drawn to the idea of starting a laundromat because it was an evergreen business. She also wanted to avoid making laundry feel like a chore."The whole idea was that we really want people to kind of look forward to laundry day. It doesn't have to be stuffy or boring," she said. The laundromat is a bright, air-conditioned space with free WiFi and a coffee machine. Amanda Goh The air-conditioned interiors are bright and inviting. There's free WiFi and a coffee machine, and tables and chairs are set up where customers can wait.Low's intention was to create a comfortable space where people could relax or get work done while doing their laundry.Prices for the washer range between 7 and 12 Singapore dollars, or about $5 and $9. The cost of using the dryer is S$1 every 5 minutes. There are six washers and eight dryers in her laundromat. Amanda Goh. While researching the industry, Low said she noticed that laundromats were often touted as a passive income business, which meant owners were not always around to keep an eye on things.Dirty folding tables, or even a hot and stuffy atmosphere can have a big impact on the customer experience, and she wanted to change that. "I wanted it to be a more social place," she said. There are chairs and tables where customers can sit while waiting for their laundry to be done. Amanda Goh Trusting her gutHangout Laundry is tucked away in the corner on the ground floor of a public housing apartment block. The biggest challenge has been marketing the laundromat since it doesn't receive a lot of foot traffic; the nearest subway station is about a 15-minute walk away.Everything on the laundromat's website has been optimized for search engines, Low said. That, coupled with getting their regulars to leave reviews, has helped boost their visibility online. The laundromat uses a token system. Amanda Goh But ultimately, it's the experience that will keep customers coming back something they feel is enhanced through social interaction. That's why Low and her husband take turns coming in almost every day to get to know their customers and listen to feedback.Low said trusting her gut also paid off. For instance, she was told it was a bad idea to have a coffee machine in the laundromat, but she went ahead with the idea anyway.Hot drinks range in price from S$3.30 to S$4.90, and Low said coffee now accounts for 20% of the store's sales. Low says that there are customers who come into the laundromat just to enjoy a cup of coffee. Amanda Goh She added that there are people who come in just for a cup of coffee or to use the desks: "We highly encourage it. I also have kids who want to come and study. I say it's no problem if they just buy a drink."The average cost of starting a self-service laundromat is not as hefty as many other businesses, Gary Tan, a general manager at Fresh Laundry, a distributor of commercial laundry machines in Singapore, told BI.Fresh Laundry offers turnkey services to those who want to set up their own laundromats, with entry-level packages starting from S$130,000, he said."If we were to include all other miscellaneous licensing and costs that an investor needs to consider, he needs to set aside an estimate of about S$160,000," Tan said, adding that a typical laundromat would take about three years to break even.Low preferred not to share how much she has invested in or earned from the laundromat.Making laundry a social activityIn the spirit of making the laundromat a more social space, Low held a Valentine's Day-themed party in February. Low held a Valentine's Day-themed party in the laundromat in February. Low Hee Bun. "We had a couple of rounds of silly games like blindfolded clothes-folding contests," she said, adding that there were multiple DJs and a pop-up bar that night.Entry tickets were S$20 with one free drink, but free entry was granted to anyone who came with a load of laundry to wash or dry.Low's already brainstorming ideas for the laundromat's next event possibly a "Dungeons and Dragons" night, she says and for ways to improve the laundry experience."Some people want iced coffee, so we're putting in an ice machine. Some people want a library of sorts, so we're thinking about it," Low said. It's not easy being a small-business owner, but she hopes that it can rub off on her kids, who often come in on weekends to help her out."I'm hopeful that my kids can also learn to be a bit more entrepreneurial," Low said. "It would be nice."

  • Gabby Windey was the best thing about the Traitors. Did she win?
    www.vox.com
Spoiler warning: This post contains spoilers for the winner(s) of The Traitorss third season. Bambi. Gaggy. Ciggy Mommy. Newlywed. Americas Sweetheart. Former Bachelorette star and podcast host Gabby Windey has, at times, embodied all those ideals, and now she can add one more title to her bio: Traitors season three winner. Windey, along with fellow faithfuls Real Housewife of New Jersey Dolores Catania, professional brother Dylan Efron, and lesser royal Ivar Mountbatten, out-maneuvered the remaining traitors Big Brothers Danielle Reyes and Britney Haynes to win Alan Cummings game show. Besting an assemblage of other reality TV stars and slightly random minorly famous people at a castle in the Scottish Highlands to take home a quarter of the $204,300 prize pot is no small feat.Winning the murder mystery almost feels like icing, though, because Windey had already charmed, entertained, and won the hearts of so many of us watching at home. With 832,000 followers on her own TikTok, a growing podcast, and the fascinating popularity of Gaggy remixes, the throaty-voiced former cheerleader and her caustic high-femme persona are exploding on social media, promising to be a presence well after this latest foray into reality TV.How Gabby Windey became Americas favorite Ciggy MommyLoving Gabby Windey is like loving a professional sports team. You clear your schedule at 9 pm on a Thursday for weeks on end. You brace yourself for her making the wrong calls on the show and striking out. You find immeasurable joy in her good performances. And for the rest of the week, youre on various websites, mainly TikTok and her podcast Long Winded, to see what shes up to, all in an effort to kill the time between episodes. And like a true fan, you start to speak her language lethaaaaargic, ciggy mommy, Im not dumb so much that it becomes both shorthand between friends and a litmus test for potential ones. Windey first appeared on TV screens as a contestant on The Bachelor, becoming famous for rejecting Clayton Echards offer to walk her out. She followed that with a stint as one of two The Bachelorette(s) for that shows season 19, and followed that by coming out as gay on The View in 2023. Somewhere in between, she was the runner-up on season 31 on Dancing with the Stars. She recently revealed her surprise marriage to her first girlfriend, comedian and writer Robby Hoffman. Previously, Windey worked as a nurse and Denver Broncos cheerleader. Still, Windey came into The Traitors third season arguably overshadowed by bigger, flashy, reality TV personalities like Survivors Boston Rob and Real Housewivess Dorinda Medley. But with each confessional, each roundtable, each banishment, Windeys shimmery outfits, sharp wit, and airy baby voice made it clear she was the shows big star. Whether it was sitting alongside a castmate she believed to be a cold. blooded. killer., raving about the Scottish breakfasts and criticizing her male castmates rowing technique, or forgetting that Ivar Mountbatten was in the room, Windey made for excellent television. In one fantastic, contentious moment, Windey shut down Danielle Reyes, the traitor who had seemingly spent the shows entire tenth episode saying she was going to annihilate Windey. At the roundtable, where contestants try to sniff out and eliminate traitors, Reyes was gunning for Windey as cover for her own season-long deceit. Windey made it clear she saw through Reyess plan, saying that it was easy to frame her. Im an easy target, I take everything on the chin, Windey explained.I dont think youre an easy target, I think youre super smart, Gabby, Reyes shoots back. Im not saying Im dumb, Windey replies, silencing her alleged annihilator. I think I could have been kept around for this long for this particular moment. Previously, Windey overheard Reyes and her fellow traitor, Survivors Carolyn Wiger, plotting in one the castles secret rooms, a fact she never revealed. On TikTok, Windey added commentary: Yeah I heard you back there, you lyin, cheating, traitor. Early in the season, Windey, Selling Sunsets Chrishell Stause, and WWEs Nikki Garcia became an alliance and called themselves the Bambis. The group of doe-eyed bombshells believed no one took them seriously and they werent totally wrong. But its Windeys self-aware, unapologetically crafty bimbo persona on the show and self-deprecating humor on her TikTok and podcast has made her a fan favorite. Shes a beautiful woman with no interest in attitude or actuality in appealing to men. Shes also a smart woman with no interest in convincing anyone that she is. You get the sense that she knows shes already wasted too much of her time trying to be understood by people who didnt get her, and found it boring. So Windey is just herself. Sometimes that happens to be adorable, other times it verges on hostile. Watching Windey move through the show with skill, sassing self-serious gamers from Survivor and Big Brother and absolutely confounding Zac Efrons brother, you cant help but want to know how she sees the world. One can find these insights on her TikToks, which are like if Legally Blondes Elle Woods mind-melded with Larry David. One seminal moment was putting to words an aesthetic known as Ciggy Mommy. Its a vibe that lies at the intersection of leopard print, pearls, silk chiffon, Diet Coke, and the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Ive ripped some heaters, she says on her podcast. I was raised by wolves I do wish you could order half a martini. Its Gaggy and a demented doll! Euan Cherry/Peacock via Getty ImagesDespite her glamorous aspirations, Windey also knows the pains of everyday people. On the subject of her own work ethic, she has boundaries. No, I have business hours. What are you doing calling me after 3 pm? she says in a TikTok bemoaning the work day and the inevitable post-lunch comedown. Windeys monologue has since become part of pop cultures rapidly growing lexicon of emotion, with tributes coming from the likes of director and actor Elizabeth Banks, a cappella band Pentatonix, and Pixar. Ive lost all my confidence. Ive just had lunch. Im lethargic, she adds drawing out the three vowels that lethargic contains and turning it into a word that takes four seconds to say. It just feels better, more soothing, to say it like Windey. Unfortunately for Windeys fans, The Traitors ended on Thursday, which means ostensibly less Windey on TV. But Cumming loves to bring fan favorites back, so theres always next season of Traitors. In the meantime, we know where to find her. See More:
