  • How this sex-forward gay cruising site finally launched an Apple-approved iOS app
    www.fastcompany.com
As an app designed to facilitate gay hookups, popular site Sniffies has had a limitation since it started in 2018it was only accessible via web browser. Until now. On Monday, the map-based cruising site debuted its Apple-approved iOS app.Building an app that complies with Apples notoriously stringent content moderationand total ban on apps that directly serve adult contentwas a challenge for Sniffies, which wears its sexuality proudly. Its users, who it calls cruisers, do, too. Many users put nude images as their cover photo, meaning adult content is visible from the second the platform is opened in a browser. For Apple to get on board, the company needed to tame the experience without losing what most users come to Sniffies for: sex. We needed to be very strategic about this, to get around Apples strict not-safe-for-work content policies, but also keep the magic of Sniffies, says Eli Martin, Sniffiess chief marketing officer. The key was giving cruisers control of the experience. How Sniffies met Apples content safety standardsSniffies leadership wasnt begging to get on the App Store. Its web-app format worked well, particularly for the men who arent out or are exploring their sexualitywho Martin says make up a core, and growing, part of its user base. (The site had an average of 4.3 million unique monthly visitors between December and February, according to analytics site Similarweb.) But fans wanted a native app, and it was difficult to compete with the markets heavyweights like Grindr without the App Stores discovery tools. When they finally decided to make the move, the Sniffies team looked to bigger apps like Reddit and X, both of which host explicit content, as models.Similar to those sites apps, when you download the new Sniffies app, it is inVanilla mode (internally, the company calls this deep safe). Anything explicit is blurred; to unblur the photos, users must follow a link to the browser version, where they can change their settings. Then, the app will respond to the changed settings and allow users to see graphic content.[Photo: Sniffies]There was certainly back-and-forth with the App Store and figuring out how to make it work on both ends, Martin says, estimating the process lasted about a year and a half. It took way longer than we thought, but it seems like Apple was very open to us being a part of the store as long as we could meet the guidelines. They had to make some concessions. Sniffiess anonymous log-in function, which allowed users to enter with only a birthdate, wont be accessible through the iOS app. (The Information has reported that this feature has made it possible for minors to easily use the app by lying about their ages.) Theres a friction to the process of creating an account that will be necessary in the App Store, Martin says; users cant just download and see the map.But there are also benefits: Some users report the map being faster, and the apps notification system is now more robust than it was with just the web version.Preserving the cruising spiritWhile the company doesnt yet know which audiences will gravitate toward which mediums, Martin has his suspicions. Those DL and curious guys, as he describes them, will likely stay on the web app, not wanting to download something to their phone. (This is a problem with Grindr, he points out: Users download and delete the app, over and over.) But the iOS launch opens them up to a new audience: the users that were never going to navigate to the Sniffies link. This audience was loud. Martin recounts years of comments across the Sniffies social media, begging them to get in the App Store. His team is now going through each and every one of these comments, telling them to download. App users are also privvy to the larger brand world that Sniffies has built around its main offering. The company has invested deeply in its (often explicit) marketing, which spans an apparel shop, its Hush lifestyle blog, and its Cruising Confessions podcast. The company also sponsors in-person events and parties, echoing the pushes from other dating apps.Even in the app store, Sniffies proclaims that it is for cruisers, by cruisers. Martin points out that the companys marketing strategy is based on foreplay, teasing the apps sexuality without being completely blatant with it. They can do that in the app store, too.But does Martin see access to a mainstream audience as a threat to the more clandestine nature of the web app that made Sniffies unique?I personally am not too worried about that, Martin says. Weve only seen better results for cruisers the larger weve gotten. The important thing is the culture. Weve already set the groundwork.

  • Once declared permanent, Washington, D.C.s Black Lives Matter Plaza will soon be painted over
    www.fastcompany.com
At the height of the summer of 2020s racial reckoning, bright yellow paint filled the streets just north of the White House. Overnight, Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser had ordered a giant street mural: Black Lives Matter, in 35-foot capital letters. That street art became the center of Black Lives Matter Plaza, and a few months later, D.C.s City Council voted that the name and mural would become a permanent fixture of the city. Five years, two elections, and a large cultural shift later, Mayor Bowser has announced that the name of BLM Plaza will be painted over. The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a very painful period, but now we cant afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference, Bowser said in a statement published Tuesday. The move is one small piece of the Trump administrations continued attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion.Volunteers painting Black Lives Matter on the street near the White House on June 5, 2020. [Photo: Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images]At a Wednesday press conference, Bowser told reporters that there were bigger fish to fry within the nations capital. She also confirmed to NBC that her decision came after talks with the White House, but she did not specify anything further.Bowsers office did not respond to Fast Companys request for comment.Republican Rep. Andy Clyde introduced legislation Monday that would withhold apportionment funds from D.C. until Mayor Bowser renamed BLM Plaza to Liberty Plaza. However, Bowser said at the press conference that her decision had been made before Clyde introduced the bill. She added that a replacement mural will focus on Americas 250th birthday, and a new name would be decided after citywide discussion.Scholars at the University of Illinois once argued that BLM Plaza is an important landmark, that its a powerful symbolic reinsertion of widespread social and civic support for Black struggle. They wrote that it can be dignifying for people of color to see such affirmative support in an area of the U.S.s most politically prominent real estate.

Facilitated by Leigh Woolley and Shamus Mulcahy, this year a series of talks / discussions will be offered with the aim to share experience and facilitate discussion through face-to-face contact. To kick this off a mini series around the theme of first house will be held over several months, and longer if there is interest. The intent is to reflect upon the first stand alone dwelling designed under your own name, (or responsibility) not necessarily your best house, or your favourite house, but where your architectural values were pinned to the mast! The post Learning From One Another | Conversations Through Architecture | First House appeared first on Australian Institute of Architects.

  • A Coding Guide to Sentiment Analysis of Customer Reviews Using IBMs Open Source AI Model Granite-3B and Hugging Face Transformers
    www.marktechpost.com
In this tutorial, we will look into how to easily perform sentiment analysis on text data using IBMs open-source Granite 3B model integrated with Hugging Face Transformers. Sentiment analysis, a widely-used natural language processing (NLP) technique, helps quickly identify the emotions expressed in text. It makes it invaluable for businesses aiming to understand customer feedback and enhance their products and services. Now, lets walk you through installing the necessary libraries, loading the IBM Granite model, classifying sentiments, and visualizing your results, all effortlessly executable in Google Colab.!pip install transformers torch accelerateFirst, well install the essential librariestransformers, torch, and acceleraterequired for loading and running powerful NLP models seamlessly. Transformers provides pre-built NLP models, torch serves as the backend for deep learning tasks, and accelerate ensures efficient resource utilization on GPUs.import torchfrom transformers import AutoModelForCausalLM, AutoTokenizer, pipelineimport pandas as pdimport matplotlib.pyplot as pltThen, well import the required Python libraries. Well use torch for efficient tensor operations, transformers for loading pre-trained NLP models from Hugging Face, pandas for managing and processing data in structured formats, and matplotlib for visually interpreting your analysis results clearly and intuitively.model_id = "ibm-granite/granite-3.0-3b-a800m-instruct"tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(model_id)model = AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained( model_id, device_map='auto', torch_dtype=torch.bfloat16, trust_remote_code=True)generator = pipeline("text-generation", model=model, tokenizer=tokenizer)Here, well load IBMs open-source Granite 3B instruction-following model, specifically ibm-granite/granite-3.0-3b-a800m-instruct, using Hugging Faces AutoTokenizer and AutoModelForCausalLM. This compact, instruction-tuned model is optimized to handle tasks like sentiment classification directly within Colab, even under limited computational resources.def classify_sentiment(review): prompt = f"""Classify the sentiment of the following review as Positive, Negative, or Neutral.Review: "{review}"Sentiment:""" response = generator( prompt, max_new_tokens=5, do_sample=False, pad_token_id=tokenizer.eos_token_id ) sentiment = response[0]['generated_text'].split("Sentiment:")[-1].split("n")[0].strip() return sentimentNow well define the core function classify_sentiment. This function leverages the IBM Granite 3B model through an instruction-based prompt to classify the sentiment of any given review into Positive, Negative, or Neutral. The function formats the input review, invokes the model with precise instructions, and extracts the resulting sentiment from the generated text.import pandas as pdreviews = [ "I absolutely loved the service! Definitely coming back.", "The item arrived damaged, very disappointed.", "Average product. Nothing too exciting.", "Superb experience, exceeded all expectations!", "Not worth the money, poor quality."]reviews_df = pd.DataFrame(reviews, columns=['review'])Next, well create a simple DataFrame reviews_df using Pandas, containing a collection of example reviews. These sample reviews serve as input data for sentiment classification, enabling us to observe how effectively the IBM Granite model can determine customer sentiments in a practical scenario.reviews_df['sentiment'] = reviews_df['review'].apply(classify_sentiment)print(reviews_df)After defining the reviews, well apply the classify_sentiment function to each review in the DataFrame. This will generate a new column, sentiment, where the IBM Granite model classifies each review as Positive, Negative, or Neutral. By printing the updated reviews_df, we can see the original text and its corresponding sentiment classification.import matplotlib.pyplot as pltsentiment_counts = reviews_df['sentiment'].value_counts()plt.figure(figsize=(8, 6))sentiment_counts.plot.pie(autopct='%1.1f%%', explode=[0.05]*len(sentiment_counts), colors=['#66bb6a', '#ff7043', '#42a5f5'])plt.ylabel('')plt.title('Sentiment Distribution of Reviews')plt.show()Lastly, well visualize the sentiment distribution in a pie chart. This step provides a clear, intuitive overview of how the reviews are classified, making interpreting the models overall performance easier. Matplotlib lets us quickly see the proportion of Positive, Negative, and Neutral sentiments, bringing your sentiment analysis pipeline full circle.PlotIn conclusion, we have successfully implemented a powerful sentiment analysis pipeline using IBMs Granite 3B open-source model hosted on Hugging Face. You learned how to leverage pre-trained models to quickly classify text into positive, negative, or neutral sentiments, visualize insights effectively, and interpret your findings. This foundational approach allows you to easily adapt these skills to analyze datasets or explore other NLP tasks. IBMs Granite models combined with Hugging Face Transformers offer an efficient way to perform advanced NLP tasks. Here is the Colab Notebook.
