French Supreme Court rules in favour of Nintendo against site hosting pirated copies of its games"Nintendo is pleased with the Court's findings and believes that it is significant not only for Nintendo, but for the entire games industry" News by Sophie McEvoy Staff Writer Published on March 7, 2025 Nintendo has won a long-running legal battle against French sharehosting operator Dstorage.Following a decision dated February 26, 2025, the French Supreme Court found Dstorage "liable for failing to remove access to unauthorised copies of Nintendo games stored on its platform" referring to the filehosting site 1fichier.com.This decision means other European-based filesharing sites must remove pirated copies of games when asked, or face legal action and potential fines.Nintendo initially filed a lawsuit against Dstorage in 2021, after it had previously demanded the company take down unauthorised Nintendo games stored on 1fichier.com.Dstorage appealed the decision, which failed when in April 2023 the Paris Court of Appeals ordered the company to pay Nintendo 422,750 in compensation and 25,000 in legal fees.Dstorage then took the case to the French Supreme Court, claiming a court order was needed before it would take down pirated content. This ultimately failed, leading to Nintendo's victory in court."Nintendo is pleased with the Court's finding of liability against Dstorage and believes that it is significant for not only Nintendo, but for the entire games industry," the firm said."It will prevent sharehosters like 1fichier.com from claiming like it did during the proceedings on the merits that a prior decision from a court is needed before pirated content must be taken down, and it confirms the rights that holders have to give notice of when claiming that notified content infringes copyright or trademark rights."It added: "Together with its recent decision as of January 15, 2025, confirming that a major French bank had rightfully terminated a payment processing agreement with 1fichier.com due to lacking anti-piracy measures, the French Supreme Court leaves no doubt that sharehosting providers like 1fichier.com are not a safe haven for storing and sharing illegal content."Nintendo has been cracking down on piracy as of late. In November, it asked a US District Court to subpoena business records from various firms as part of its lawsuit against James 'Archbox Williams' over alleged piracy changes. It has also sought legal action against Ryan Michael Daly of Modded Hardware a website that sells modded consoles, pirated games, and mod chips. In February 2024, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against the creators of the Switch emulator Yuzu. A month later, its developer Tropic Haze agreed to pay $2.4 million in a settlement and relinquished the domain name to Nintendo of America.Later that year, Switch emulator Ryujinx reportedly ended development following a request made by Nintendo.

  • Android phones are getting lock screen widgets this year
    www.theverge.com
Google has announced that lock screen widgets are coming to Android 16 phones later this year. Widgets have been available on the lock screen of the Pixel Tablet since last year, but Google is now bringing them to phones and more tablets. All widgets will support the lock screen by default, though app developers will have the option to disable support if they prefer. Certain widget actions such as triggering an app will still require you to authenticate with a fingerprint, pin, or face unlock before theyll function. The upcoming change was announced on the Android Developers Blog, where the company confirmed that lock screen widgets will be added to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) in the first quarterly update following the release of Android 16, due in late summer. Android 16 itself is still in beta, and is due to release in June. While the lock screen widgets for phones arent yet enabled in the latest Android 16 beta, Android Authoritys Mishaal Rahman managed to activate the functionality early. He found that while Pixel Tablet users can access lock screen widgets by swiping right from the home screen, the present implementation for phones is only available through Androids screensaver mode, which requires the phone to be charging or docked. However, in its blog post Google notes that the mechanism to trigger the widget interface is customizable by hardware manufacturers, so we may see different approaches once the update arrives. The other difference from the Pixel Tablet implementation comes down to screen size. Instead of a two-row grid of widgets, Rahmans video shows widgets stacked vertically, with only space for a couple on the screen at once, so youll have to swipe through screens to access them all.

  • Q-Filters: A Training-Free AI Method for Efficient KV Cache Compression
    www.marktechpost.com
Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly advanced due to the Transformer architecture, with recent models like Gemini-Pro1.5, Claude-3, GPT4, and Llama3.1 demonstrating capabilities to process hundreds of thousands of tokens. However, these expanded context lengths introduce critical challenges for practical deployment. As sequence length increases, decoding latency escalates and memory constraints become severe bottlenecks. The KV Cache, which stores contextual information in GPU memory during inference, grows proportionally with context length, leading to memory saturation. This fundamental limitation impedes efficient inference processes when handling extensive input sequences, creating a pressing need for optimisation solutions. While training-free methods exist, they frequently depend on access to attention weights to determine Key-Value pair importance, creating incompatibility with efficient attention algorithms like FlashAttention. These methods often necessitate partial recomputation of attention matrices, introducing both time and memory overhead. Consequently, existing compression algorithms primarily serve to compress prompts before answer generation rather than optimizing memory-constrained generation processes. This fundamental limitation highlights the need for compression techniques that maintain model performance without requiring architectural modifications or compromising compatibility with established efficiency algorithms. This paper from Sorbonne Universit, Inria France, Sapienza University of Rome, University of Edinburgh and Miniml.AI introduces Q-Filters, a robust training-free KV Cache compression technique that utilizes query-based filtering to optimize memory usage without sacrificing model performance. Q-Filters operates by evaluating the importance of Key-Value pairs based on their relevance to the current query, rather than relying on attention weights. This approach ensures compatibility with efficient attention algorithms like FlashAttention while eliminating the need for retraining or architectural modifications. By dynamically assessing and retaining only the most relevant contextual information, Q-Filters achieves significant memory reduction while maintaining inference quality. The method implements a streamlined compression pipeline that integrates seamlessly with existing LLM deployments, offering a practical solution for memory-constrained environments without compromising the models ability to process long-context inputs effectively.Building upon theoretical insights into query-key geometry, Q-Filters presents a sophisticated approach to KV Cache compression that leverages the intrinsic geometric properties of query and key vectors. The method is founded on two critical observations: the existence of a favored common normalized direction for both query and key distributions, and the unidirectional nature of query-key anisotropy. Through rigorous mathematical formulation, the researchers demonstrate that projecting key vectors along this anisotropic direction provides a reliable estimate of attention logits. This insight leads to a streamlined compression algorithm that involves: (1) gathering query representations through model sampling, (2) computing Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to extract right-vectors, and (3) obtaining positive Q-Filters for each attention head. During inference, the method strategically discards key-value pairs with the lowest projection values along these filters. For models using Grouped-Query Attention, Q-Filters simply average the filters across grouped query representations. Importantly, this approach requires only a one-time preparation step following model training, with the resulting Q-Filters remaining context-agnostic while exploiting fundamental properties of the latent space.Q-Filters demonstrates exceptional performance across multiple evaluation scenarios, consistently outperforming existing KV Cache compression methods. In language modeling tests on the Pile dataset, the technique achieves the lowest perplexity among all compression schemes, even with maximum KV Cache size restricted to 512 pairs and across extended sequence lengths. This performance advantage scales effectively to larger models, with Llama-3.1-70B showing significant perplexity reduction, particularly in latter portions of sequences where contextual retention becomes critical. In the challenging Needle-in-a-Haystack task, Q-Filters maintains impressive 91% accuracy compared to K-norms 63%, successfully preserving crucial information across extreme context lengths from 1K to 64K tokens. Comprehensive evaluation on the Ruler dataset further validates the methods superiority, particularly at high compression rates (32), where Q-Filters achieves the highest scores across long context modeling benchmarks. Also, the technique demonstrates remarkable robustness regarding calibration requirements, with diminishing returns beyond 1,000 samples and high vector stability across diverse calibration datasets, confirming its practical efficiency for real-world implementations.Q-Filters demonstrates exceptional performance across multiple evaluation scenarios, consistently outperforming existing KV Cache compression methods. • 25 Years On, American Psychos Ending Is Still Misunderstood
    www.denofgeek.com
Late last year, it was reported that director Luca Guadagnino is developing a new film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis 1991 novel, American Psycho. Ellis has cast doubts on that report by suggesting its more of an idea than a committed project, but the news sparked mixed reactions. Guadagnino tackling this relevant text through a modern lens seems appealing, but many argue that director Mary Harrons 2000 American Psycho film doesnt need a companion. While Harrons film has aged incredibly well, a strange cloud looms over its legacy. For 25 years, conversations about Harrons adaptation have been dominated by a debate over its ending. Fans remain eternally divided over whether the events of the film occur largely as they are presented or whether most (if not all of them) are all in protagonist Patrick Batemans head. Its bizarre that the American Psycho film has succumbed to the simplified fate of its ending debate. Not only was its ending not meant to be nearly as ambiguous as it has become, but that often misunderstood finale feeds into some of American Psychos most disturbing themes.American Psycho protagonist Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a yuppie who works as an investment banker by day and commits gruesome murders at night. After a particularly bizarre string of violent incidents, Bateman seemingly confesses his crimes via a message he leaves on his lawyers answering machine. However, as Bateman wanders the aftermath of his supposed spree, he finds that nothing is quite as it seems. The realtor selling one of his victims apartments denies the home was recently the scene of a crime. Batemans lawyer not only treats his message like a joke but insists that he recently had dinner with one of Batemans high-profile victims. All the while, Bateman continues seeing and hearing increasingly bizarre, seemingly impossible things as those around him insist that hes too square to have done such horrible things. That finale forms the basis of the its all in his head interpretation of the material. Those around Bateman appear to offer compelling evidence that he could not have done those things, and the nature of Batemans final spree is absurd. He blows up cars with a pistol and evades the entire NYPD. In the movie, an ATM tells him to feed it a stray cat. In the book, he watches a Cheerio be interviewed on TV.Those who subscribe to that interpretation argue that Bateman is a privileged, pathetic young man whose hollow life has led him to fantasize about acts of violence largely inspired by the shallow media he consumes. Its a theory that is not only seemingly supported by the text but is that kind of aha! revelation that seems so clever that it makes some feel stupid for believing anything else. The only problem with that otherwise fascinating theory is that its wrong. At the very least, its a simplified reading of the events of the story that historically diminishes some of its most important and fascinating themes.American Psychos Overlooked Themes Tell The True StoryAmerican Psychos most consistent theme is identity. Specifically, it asks how one can forge and maintain a distinct identity in a capitalist culture where the consumption of the same media, fashion, food, and brands drives people to turn themselves into roughly the same version of the people they believe they should be.Its that theme that helps explain many events that otherwise seem inexplicable. When characters claim to have had lunch with one of Batemans victims, they seem to be confused about who they met. In the movie (and especially in the book), people often confuse one person in Batemans world for somebody else. Even elements of their lives that are designed to identify them (such as their famous business cards) are hilariously similar to many eyes. The biggest tell comes when Bateman visits his victims apartment. The realtor catches Bateman in a lie when she asks if he read about a listing in The New York Times that doesnt exist. However, she asks that he simply leave and never come back. The strong implication is that she knows there has been a murder, suspects Bateman knows more than he should about it, but would greatly prefer that this whole thing be swept under the rug so that she can sell a recently cleaned luxury apartment.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!American Psycho observes and often criticizes the kind of world that enables a murderer like Patrick Bateman to get away with it all. As a handsome white man of means, he can always blend in. Those inside that world are either indifferent or focused more on themselves. Those outside of it are rarely offered a look inside and can hardly afford to take a closer second look.Bateman himself seems frustrated by the idea that all of this is as easy as it seems to be. He can use violent language because the people around him all see themselves as sharks with chainsaws. He can murder women (especially sex workers) because society tells him that theyre ultimately not bothered that much by such violence. He tries to conceal the murder of someone more like himself, but even that effort proves to be superfluous. It turns out charging someone modern market price for an apartment is more valuable than making a big deal out of a tenants death. To be clear, Bateman almost certainly seems to suffer a break from reality around the time that ATMs start asking for cats and hes murdering en masse. Patrick Bateman actor Christian Bale described the process as going from psychopath to psychotic. Those events likely did not occur exactly as we saw them, though they do not necessarily negate what we saw before. They instead emphasize the idea that the real and imagined murders are ultimately interchangeable if they are committed by the right kind of person in a world that is ultimately indifferent. Mind you, thats not simply a read of the film. Its what those who crafted the story have long tried to preach to people who wouldnt listen.American Psychos Director and Creator Have Made Their Intentions ClearAmerican Psycho director Mary Harron has always been clear about her feelings towards the alternate interpretation of her movie. In an interview with Charlie Rose (which Ellis and Bale joined), Harron describes the movies ending as a failure that resulted in people keep coming out of this film thinking that its all a dream. While she and screenwriter Guinevere Turner intended to retain the ambiguity of Ellis work, she says that I just got the emphasis wrongit makes it look like it was all in his head. And as far as Im concerned, its not.Turner expanded on that sentiment by simply stating We didnt think that everything was real because some of it is literally surreal. But we just decided, together, that we both really disliked movies where the big reveal is that it was all in someones head or it was all a dream.American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis has historically emphasized the storys surreal elements and the doubt they cast on Batemans reliability as a narrator. In a 2010 interview, Ellis said of Batemans murderers that I was always on the fence about whether they were fantasy or real. I dont know and I prefer it that way.Ellis has said that Harrons movie tries to have it both ways by suggesting that [its real] and it wasnt. He mostly likes the adaptation but suggests that the story fundamentally doesnt really work as a film and is unadaptable because its about consciousness. He believes thats why the movie confused a lot of people. While the ambiguity regarding certain events and themes in American Psycho was always there (LA Times reviewer Henry Bean brought up the idea that the murders never occurred in his 1991 review of the book), that broader its all a dream interpretation seems to have gained steam when the movie was released. And while it is incredibly difficult to adapt such a cerebral novel into a movie (Lolita famously ran into a similar problem), the reaction to American Psycho touches upon a more unique and often more insidious trend in modern movie history. What American Psychos Misunderstood Ending Teaches UsIts remarkable to see which elements of the American Psycho movie have had the most lasting impact on popular culture. Christian Bales performance practically won him the Batman role (specifically, that of Bruce Wayne). That aforementioned scene with the exchange of the business cards has become a prolific meme. Bret Easton Ellis has tried to distance himself from the idea that American Psycho contributed to a style known as serial killer chic: a phrase the Wall Street Journal even used to describe the truly bizarre American Psycho: The Musical. While many cerebral, perspective-driven works are often simplified when they are consumed and processed by a mass audience, its telling that American Psycho has been adopted as an unlikely piece of bro media. Like Fight Club, The Wolf of Wall Street, Breaking Bad, Taxi Driver, and more, it offers a clear condemnation of toxic masculinity and the world that toxicity results in. Time and time again, though, we see viewers (often young men) idealize the central figures of those works. If they are not simply ignorant to the themes of those stories, they consider them irrelevant compared to the primal allure of their central figures. Its especially frustrating and darkly funny that American Psycho has joined that pantheon. Patrick Batemans rambling monologues about the artistic merits of the most basic forms of pop culture (many of which he seems to have stolen from some magazine or newspaper) reveal his shallowness and inability to become the individual he claims he desires to be. Yet, the story that Patrick Bateman stars in has since been widely misinterpreted by a contingent whose arguments often echo existing theories despite all evidence that contradicts them. And that is what makes the its all a dream interpretation of American Psychos ending so frustrating. Its not that its entirely invalid. It even ties into certain themes of the story. But when you track that interpretations rise in popularity and realize it coincides with the rise of American Psychos serial killer chic legacy, its hard not to see it as another example of simplifying the storys most complex concepts in service of celebrating Patrick Batemans coolness. Its a lot easier to justify the idealization of a character if they only wished to commit murder. A popular online argument for that theory even argues that weve all had those kinds of thoughts.Or maybe the joke is on the rest of us. Maybe the mass adoption of the all in his head theory proves the books deeper, subtler, and often lost themes right. Isnt that what people tell Bateman when he tries to confess to his crimes? What could justify the books themes more than the idea of Patrick Bateman writing a tell-all about his deeds that is then turned into a movie only to have people dismiss his crimes as fantasy as they celebrate his charisma, hair, taste in music, and those wonderful white business cards?Thats what makes the prospect of a modern American Psycho interpretation so fascinating and potentially frustrating. Such an adaptation could indeed help undo decades of damage. It could find a way to not only showcase the relevance of the story for the modern era but address those who widely misinterpreted it as they embraced Patrick Batemans most superficial qualities. Then again, maybe were past all of that. When you consider where the world is at, maybe it all was an American Dream.American Psycho is streaming now on Prime Video and Hulu in the US, and on Netflix in the UK.

  • This Malicious PyPI Package Stole Ethereum Private Keys via Polygon RPC Transactions
    thehackernews.com
Mar 07, 2025Ravie LakshmananMalware / BlockchainCybersecurity researchers have discovered a malicious Python package on the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository that's equipped to steal a victim's Ethereum private keys by impersonating popular libraries. The package in question is set-utils, which has received 1,077 downloads to date. It's no longer available for download from the official registry."Disguised as a simple utility for Python sets, the package mimics widely used libraries like python-utils (712M+ downloads) and utils (23.5M + downloads)," software supply chain security company Socket said."This deception tricks unsuspecting developers into installing the compromised package, granting attackers unauthorized access to Ethereum wallets."The package aims to target Ethereum developers and organizations working with Python-based blockchain applications, particularly Python-based wallet management libraries like eth-account.Besides embedding the attacker's RSA public key to be used for encrypting the stolen data and an Ethereum sender account under their control, the library hooks into wallet creation functions like "from_key()" and "from_mnewmonic()" to intercept private keys as they are generated on the compromised machine. In an interesting twist, the private keys are exfiltrated within blockchain transactions via the Polygon RPC endpoint "rpc-amoy.polygon.technology" in an attempt to resist traditional detection efforts that monitor for suspicious HTTP requests."This ensures that even when a user successfully creates an Ethereum account, their private key is stolen and transmitted to the attacker," Socket said. "The malicious function runs in a background thread, making detection even more difficult."Found this article interesting? Mar 07, 2025Ravie LakshmananCryptocurrency / RansomwareA coalition of international law enforcement agencies has seized the website associated with the cryptocurrency exchange Garantex ("garantex[.]org"), nearly three years after the service was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in April 2022."The domain for Garantex has been seized by the United States Secret Service pursuant to a seizure warrant obtained by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia under the authority of 18 U.S.C. 981 and 982," reads a seizure banner on the website. The operation was carried out in coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice's Criminal Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Europol, the Dutch National Police, the German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt aka BKA), the Frankfurt General Prosecutor's Office, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, and the Estonian National Criminal Police.Founded in 2019, Garantex was previously subject to U.S. sanctions for facilitating transactions from darknet markets and illicit actors such as Hydra and Conti. In late 2023, sanctions were also imposed against a Russian national named Ekaterina Zhdanova for her role in laundering the proceeds of ransomware groups like Ryuk via Garantex. The development comes weeks after the European Union announced similar sanctions against the crypto exchange late last month for its close association with already sanctioned Russian banks such as Sberbank, T-Bank, and Alfa-Bank, prompting Tether to block its crypto wallets. In a message posted on its Telegram channel, Garantex said: "Dear users! We have bad news. Tether has entered the war against the Russian crypto market and blocked our wallets worth more than 2.5 billion rubles.""We are temporarily suspending all services, including cryptocurrency withdrawals, while our entire team solves this problem. • The best response to International Womens Day is to embrace mentoring all year round
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
Imposter syndrome isnt exclusive to women, but to mark International Womens Day, I wanted to highlight some of the characteristics that may resonate with you and discuss how theyre exacerbated by gender inequality. There is no doubt theres been a positive movement towards gender balance in the workplace in the architectural sphere. Increasingly, clients and the media require architects to demonstrate diversity within their teams. But the built environment is a sector where women in senior positions are few and the demand to close the gender pay gap is growing. If we need more representative design teams, then surely the lived experiences of women should be part of their merit profileFaced with a shortage of diverse candidates, is there a temptation to promote based on characteristics other than merit? I constantly hear a prevailing anxiety among my peers that theyre the subject of positive discrimination. While its a necessary corrective to our professions diversity deficit in some instances, it can also lead people to questioning whether opportunities are due to their accomplishments or because theyre a woman. This layers onto the issue of imposter syndrome too easily, providing conflicting reactions to what for some would be an ordinary opportunity and adding to the complexity of self-worth.AdvertisementThis is when it is essential to unpack what we think about merit. If we need more representative design teams, then surely the lived experiences of women and their empathy with womens issues should be part of their merit profile. Our merit assessment, often based on hard sciences and academia within a male-dominated structure, needs to be more inclusive, and the hierarchy of hard and soft skills in practice should be interrogated.Awards such as the AJ100 Mentor of the Year and the RIBA Rising Star award offer a platform to recognise the varied industry, but recognition should start at practice level and be part of its culture. Self-reflection is needed to ensure your practice understands the merits of its employees. At Eric Parry Architects, we launched our mentoring programme last year to support professional growth across the practice at all levels. Myriad other practices are also developing in-depth mentoring systems, such as tp bennett, which runs the innovative mutual-mentoring initiative Twelve. Under the programme, 12 applicants from across the business are matched with 12 board members for 18 months. Were also seeing focused initiatives led by organisations like Women in Architecture, who are supporting women at all stages of their careers in the architectural sphere.Mentoring isnt a complete solution but it is a positive step to break down barriers. While my experience is from a large practice with resources for a formal mentoring programme, practices of all sizes can tailor a programme to their needs or use existing external programmes. The long-term benefits of these activities will balance the outlay of time and resource required. My concern then isnt just about gaining recognition, but also sustaining it. Recognition can add pressure to meet expectations, creating an imposter loop. This is where mentoring really helps. Speaking to someone experienced who can reassure and guide is beneficial, but more importantly, it provides a space to educate and increase empathy, vital for supporting a less imposter symptom-prone industry. More women in higher positions will help, creating a greater pool of mentors and reducing the imposter loop we may feel stuck in.AdvertisementWouldnt it be great if it became unremarkable when a woman is selected for a position of responsibility? The questions of why would no longer be at the forefront, and self-doubt would diminish. We still have a way to go, but having seen the impact of a mentoring culture at practice level at Eric Parry Architects as well as the sector-wide shift towards gender balance, I remain optimistic.Emily Posey is an associate architect at Eric Parry Architects2025-03-07Katie Lastcomment and share
