WWW.THEVERGE.COMAI search is starting to kill Googles ten blue linksAfter decades of relying on Googles ten blue links to find everything from travel tips to jeans, consumers are quickly adapting to a completely new format: AI chatbots that do the searching for them.According to new research from Adobe, AI search has become a significant traffic channel for retailers. The company analyzed more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites through its analytics platform, and conducted a survey of more than 5,000 U.S. respondents to better understand how people are using AI.The report says AI search referrals surged 1,300 percent during the 2024 holiday season compared to 2023, with Cyber Monday seeing a 1,950 percent jump. While these are dramatic increases, its somewhat expected, since AI search was still in its nascency last year.Whats more interesting is the engagement metrics: Users who are referred from AI search compared to traditional referrals (like a standard Google or Bing search) tend to stay on the site 8 percent longer, browse through different pages 12 percent more, and are 23 percent less likely to just visit the link and leave (or bounce). This could suggest that AI tools are directing people to more relevant pages than traditional search. The roll out of generative AI search tools hasnt been perfect, and it wasnt immediately clear whether it would be a helpful tool or not. Its been almost a year since Google launched AI Overviews (formerly dubbed the Search Generative Experience or SGE). It quickly got messy: telling users to add some glue to their pizza in order to get the cheese to stick or to eat at least one small rock a day, and claiming that former President Barack Obama was the first Muslim president were some of the odd mistakes it made early on.Theres also Perplexity, a fledgling startup now valued at a whopping $9 billion, which provides AI search via a chatbot (with advertising baked in) and has been mired in controversy. Last June, a Forbes editor alleged that the startup had wholesale plagiarized his teams reporting thanks to a new Perplexity feature that generates a web page on any topic. At the time, CEO Aravind Srinivas said that the product has rough edges and it will improve with feedback over time. Not everyone took kindly to that defense: Forbes threatened to sue, while News Corp is actively suing for copyright infringement.Despite early issues, OpenAI also launched its own search feature last year within its flagship product, ChatGPT. Perhaps learning from the mistakes made by Google and Perplexity, OpenAI announced the launch of its search feature as a prototype, hoping to reduce the number of weird edge cases that could potentially go viral. It also came with a slew of media partnerships (including Vox Media, the parent company of The Verge) and a press release that emphasized how publishers had control of how their work surfaced in ChatGPT.For now, it seems like AI search is here to stay and consumers are molding it to their needs. The accompanying survey by Adobe of 5,000 consumers found that 39 percent of those respondents use AI search for online shopping, 55 percent use it to do research (which Ive also said is my main use case), and 47 percent use it to find recommendations on what to buy. These kinds of statistics tend to make advertisers salivate. But while Perplexity and Google bake in ads alongside AI search results, OpenAI doesnt. Per TechCrunch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said the company would put ads in ChatGPT as a last resort because he thinks ads-plus-AI is sort of uniquely unsettling. CFO Sarah Friar has said the startup was considering implementing ads (which a company spokesperson later walked back). While OpenAI could really use the ad revenue since its products are cash-burning machines, that isnt the future consumers want and the lack of ads might be whats drawing them to AI search in the first place.Even though its still early days, AI search has clearly caught consumers attention as they experiment with this new way to find things online. Many critics feel traditional search has been broken for years, clogged with ads and SEO spam. AI search is emerging as the potential fix if it can avoid the same corrupting forces.See More:0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri

WWW.THEVERGE.COMRoku tests customer patience with startup video adsOver the weekend, a number of Roku device owners noticed an irksome new advertising method from the company: a trailer for Moana 2 began playing before they could even access the Roku homescreen. Ars Technica reported on the situation, which has been called out in a few different Reddit threads. The reaction among customers, as you might imagine, is overwhelmingly negative. Its worth remembering that Roku makes the bulk of its revenue from advertising not bargain-bin priced streaming hardware. But just like Amazon before it, Roku is discovering that its easy to turn the ads dial too far.Ill take the banner ads, but Ill be damned if Im gonna put up with a video loading when loading up my Roku, one Redditor wrote. Just turned on my TV to see a video open on the homescreen and play some trailer? I hope this was a fluke, another person posted to Rokus community forum. I trashed all of my Amazon boxes years ago because of this garbage. If it keeps up, my Rokus will be next. People tend to get incensed when you make them watch a video ad just to use a product.Rokus advertising business fuels the bulk of its revenue. Image: RokuOn the companys most recent earnings call, Roku founder and CEO Anthony Wood discussed the balancing act of trying to evolve ad presentation without ruining what he sees as an iconic homescreen. Our strategy of making better use of our homescreen is not just about putting a marquee video ad on the homescreen. We are very careful about putting ads on our homescreen, he said. Were very focused on both driving more monetization but also driving increased customer satisfaction. We have a very iconic homescreen, consumers love it. We have no intention of breaking it.Roku first started moving beyond static homescreen ads last year. This is also the company that has explored the idea of inserting ad overlays for plugged-in HDMI devices, which would extend Rokus reach beyond its own players. In a statement to Ars Technica, Roku steered clear of admitting that it mightve gone overboard here, saying that the company has and will always require continuous testing and innovation across design, navigation, content, and our first-rate advertising products. The Moana startup ad is apparently an example of new ways to showcase brands and programming while still providing a delightful and simple user experience. From the feedback so far, customers seem to view this as anything but delightful.Google and Amazon arent shy about putting ads in your face, either. Photo by Chris Welch / The VergeWhether its Amazon, Google, or Roku, theyre all constantly trying to feel out just how much customers are willing to tolerate in exchange for affordable streaming gadgets. But these ads often extend to pricier hardware as well. A couple weeks ago, I saw a full-screen Starbucks ad on the Google TV homescreen of my Hisense U8N, which retails for over $900. Not ideal, but this is how it goes now.Your options are to ignore the ads and go about your day, switch to a product like the Apple TV 4K, or use third-party tools in the hopes of avoiding the advertising machine altogether. But be warned: some Roku customers think the company might be finding ways to thwart solutions like Pi-hole.See More: News0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri

WWW.MARKTECHPOST.COMThis AI Paper from Columbia University Introduces Manify: A Python Library for Non-Euclidean Representation LearningMachine learning has expanded beyond traditional Euclidean spaces in recent years, exploring representations in more complex geometric structures. Non-Euclidean representation learning is a growing field that seeks to capture the underlying geometric properties of data by embedding it in hyperbolic, spherical, or mixed-curvature product spaces. These approaches have been particularly useful in modeling hierarchical, structured, or networked data more efficiently than Euclidean embeddings. The field has witnessed significant advancements with new tools and algorithms to facilitate these complex representations.A significant challenge in this domain is the lack of a unified framework integrating different approaches to non-Euclidean representation learning. Current methodologies are often dispersed across multiple software packages, creating inefficiencies in implementation. Many existing tools cater to specific types of non-Euclidean spaces, restricting their broader applicability. Researchers require a comprehensive and accessible library that enables seamless embedding, classification, and regression while maintaining compatibility with established machine learning frameworks. Addressing this gap is crucial for advancing non-Euclidean machine learning research and applications.Several tools have been introduced to facilitate manifold-based machine learning. Geoopt, a Python package, provides Riemannian optimization for non-Euclidean manifolds, but its functionality is limited. Other implementations focus on hyperbolic learning but lack consistency, resulting in fragmented methodologies. The absence of a unified, open-source toolset that bridges these gaps has made non-Euclidean machine learning less accessible to a broader research community. A more comprehensive framework is needed to enable smooth adoption and integration of non-Euclidean learning methods.A research team from Columbia University introduced Manify, an open-source Python library designed to address the limitations of existing non-Euclidean representation learning tools. Manify extends beyond current methodologies by incorporating mixed-curvature embeddings and manifold-based learning techniques into a single package. It is built upon Geoopt, enhancing its capabilities by allowing the learning of representations in products of hyperbolic, hyperspherical, and Euclidean component manifolds. The library facilitates classification and regression tasks while enabling the estimation of manifold curvature. By consolidating multiple non-Euclidean learning techniques into a structured framework, Manify provides a robust solution for researchers working with data that naturally exists in non-Euclidean spaces.Manify comprises three primary functionalities: embedding graphs or distance matrices into product manifolds, training predictors for manifold-valued data, and estimating dataset curvature. The library integrates multiple embedding methods, including coordinate learning, Siamese neural networks, and variational autoencoders, offering distinct advantages in different applications. Further, it supports various classifiers, such as decision trees, perceptrons, and support vector machines, which have been adapted to work with non-Euclidean data. Manify also features specialized tools for measuring curvature, assisting users in determining the most suitable manifold geometry for their datasets. These capabilities make it a versatile and powerful library for researchers exploring non-Euclidean learning techniques. The performance of Manify has been evaluated across multiple machine learning tasks, demonstrating significant improvements in embedding quality and predictive accuracy. The librarys ability to model heterogeneous curvature within a single framework has reduced metric distortion compared to Euclidean methods. Results indicate that embeddings generated using Manify exhibit superior structural fidelity, preserving distances more accurately than traditional techniques. The library has also demonstrated computational efficiency, with training times comparable to existing Euclidean-based methods despite the increased complexity of non-Euclidean representations. Performance benchmarks reveal that Manify achieves an average improvement of approximately 15% in classification accuracy over Euclidean embeddings, showcasing its effectiveness in manifold-based learning tasks.Manify represents a major advancement in non-Euclidean representation learning, addressing the limitations of existing tools and enabling more precise modeling of complex data structures. By offering an open-source, well-integrated framework, the library simplifies the adoption of manifold-based learning techniques for researchers and practitioners. The introduction of Manify has bridged the gap between theoretical advancements and practical implementation, making non-Euclidean learning methods more accessible to the broader scientific community. Future enhancements could further optimize its capabilities, solidifying its role as a key resource in machine learning research.Check outthe Paper and GitHub Page. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. WWW.COUNTRYLIVING.COMThis is the One Piece of Furniture Every Kitchen Should HaveAs the Food Director of Country Living, it should come as no surprise that my kitchen is the most used room in the house. Whether it's lounging over a morning cup of coffee, cooking dinner while listening to music and chatting, or mixing cocktailsI'm partial to whiskey sourswhen friends come over, it's where everyone wants to convene. That's why when we renovated our kitchen in 2016, I made sure to leave room for a sofa. Yes, a sofa. Why I Love a Sofa in the KitchenI have always loved the sort of house in which life centers around the kitchen. You know the ones. While bar stools have their merits, I opted for a seatless central work island and an adjacent landing spot where, if I'm not cooking, I can lounge and comfortably take in the activities of the kitchen. Sofas, quite simply, encourage lingering. What could be better than friends making conversation as you cook or the kids reading on the sofa while Dad whips up dinner? Besides, more and more people are breaking the so-called rules of kitchen design these days. For example, in Leanne Ford's latest remodel with Grace Mitchell, she skipped installing an island entirely. I've also seen more people embracing table lamps on countertops and artwork above the stove. In other words, the cook space and living space lines are blurring, and I love it. Charlyne Mattox for Country LivingHow to Choose a Sofa for the KitchenFirst, consider the silhouette. This probably isn't the time for a hulking English roll-arm (although if you're kitchen can accommodate as much, good for you). I opted for a clean-lined 82-inch-long midcentury modern style from a local consignment shop that tucked in right below the stairwell. You may also want to explore settees or oversized loveseats, which have a slightly smaller scale than your standard sofa. (Want more ideas? Check out our sofa style guide.)Then there's the fabric. As you probably assume, a durable performance fabric in the kitchen is a must. Performance fabrics by brands including Sunbrella, Perennials, and Crypton are designed to be stain-resistant and easy to clean. I reupholstered our sofa in a Sunbrella outdoor fabric. If you're looking for a new piece of furniture, brands like Interior Define and Article have made-to-order options at direct-to-consumer prices. If you already have a sofa but it isn't the right color or material, you can opt for a slipcover, which is easy to take off and throw in the wash should there be a spill. More Rules to Break in the KitchenI'll admit people were skeptical when I first talked about adding a sofa and picked the very colorful fabric, but now it gets tons of comments and it's the first place everyone lands when they come to visit. If you don't feel like you have room for a sofa, consider something equally unexpected like a stately wingback or pair of club chairs. WWW.HOUSEBEAUTIFUL.COMSpanish Revival Architecture Is Having a Major MomentHow Well Do You Know It?Spanish Revival architecture, with its elegant white stucco facades, red-tiled roofs, and intricate detailing, is one of the most enduring architectural styles in the United States, visible everywhere from the Flagler College in St Augustine, Florida (formerly the Ponce de Leon hotel) to Casa Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210. Drawing from the architecture of the Spanish colonization of the Americas, this architectural movement can be found across California, Florida, and the Southwest today, in homes ranging from grand estates to cozy bungalows. Today, its signature elements continue to inspire homeowners and architects alike. Here's everything you need to know about Spanish Revival architecture.More on Architectural StylesThe History of Spanish Revival ArchitectureTo understand Spanish Revival architecture, we have to look back several hundred years. From the 16th to the mid-19th century, Spain was the dominant colonizer in the Americas. The parts of America settled by Spaniardsnamely Florida, California, and the Southwesthave a similar temperate climate as Spain. So the houses the colonizers built were quite similar to those found in their homeland. "As a matter of practicality, colonizing settlers merged building practices of their home nation with the local materials and tools available," explains Andrew Cogar, AIA, and president of Historical Concepts, an architecture firm based in Atlanta and New York that specializes in traditional yet modern homes. Thus, Spanish Colonial architecture was born. Now, as for Spanish Revival architecture, that happened a bit laterit was part of the Colonial Revival movement that spread all across the United States in the early 1900s as Americans grew fascinated with their colonial heritage. Spanish Revival took off after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego, where architects Bertram Goodhue Carleton Winslow riffed on Spanish Colonial architecture for the design of the expo's main buildingsthis style became known as Spanish Colonial Revival, or simply Spanish Revival. uschools//Getty ImagesSeveral buildings in what is now San Diegos Balboa Park were built as part of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. This time around, Spanish architectural elements (the white stucco exterior, red tile roof, etc.) were more of a choice than a necessity, emphasizing the beauty and old-world feel of the materials that have become so closely tied with California casual style. As Andrew notes, it's no surprise that this unique architecture style continues to be popular and to "capture the imagination of Americans as an ideal example for individual homes in temperate climate zones." Spanish Revival homes are still widely found (and built) throughout Florida and California, but also extending further into the Southeast and Southwest.Spanish Revival Architecture Characteristics Douglas FriedmanA Spanish Revival interior by designer Jon De La Cruz.Spanish Revival homes share several distinct characteristics. White Stucco WallsThe structures are built with very thick walls, typically white stucco over adobe brick or stone, which help keep the houses cool.Red Tile RoofsOne of the most recognizable features is the red, barrel tile roof, which was low-pitched. In the Southwest, homes often have completely flat roofs with castle-like parapets lining the perimeter.Arched DoorwaysWooden doors accent the light stucco exterior walls and are sometimes arched, mimicked by arched doorways inside the homes.Small WindowsIn true Spanish Colonial homes, these tiny windows didn't have glass, just holes with wood shutters that opened and closed. Today, we've modernized them with glass panes.Intricate Interior DetailingThe interiors of Spanish Revival homes innately have a casual, warm feel to them, since the raw adobe walls may not be covered with plaster or accented with trim or painted tiles. Wooden beams often serve as structural support along the ceilings, while wrought iron detailing adds an industrial touch.Courtyards or PatiosGiven the warm climate in the areas where Spanish Revival architecture is found, it's perhaps no surprise that outdoor living is a main feature of the style.sara princeAn arched doorway in a home by Rita Chan Interiors.Regional Variations on Spanish Revival ArchitectureSince Spanish Colonial architecture was built across such a large geographic area with varying indigenous populations, the style has some regional distinctions as well. "Despite sharing the same Spanish cultural traditions and building techniques, the Southeast and Southwest had markedly different stylistic responses, based upon their specific geography and indigenous cultures," Andrew says.John Elk//Getty ImagesThe Pacific House Museum in Monterey, California. This holds true in Spanish Revival architecture, too. Monterey-style homes (of Monterey, California) were noted for their distinctive second-story porch that ran across the front of the house, Andrew says, as an addition to that original external breezeway. Walter Bibikow//Getty ImagesThe Mission-Style Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida.Mission-style architecture drew inspiration from the myriad churches built by Spanish settlers in California, which could be spotted by their use of arches and bell towers. Today, secular buildings including hotels, courthouses and even homes flaunt the style.Follow House Beautiful on Instagram and TikTok.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri
