• Images Show Entire "Universe" of Circular Structure That Can Only Be Seen as Radio Signals
    futurism.com
The vast realm probed by radio astronomers is one invisible to the naked eye, and even most kinds of telescopes. Now, thanks to the latest advances in radio observatories, scientists are uncovering an entire "low surface brightness universe" teeming with circular curiosities, according to a team of researchers from Australia including an entirely new class of cosmic object."It's comprised of radio sources so faint they have never been seen before, each with their own unique physical properties," writes Miroslav Filipovic, an astronomer at Western Sydney University, and his colleagues in an . "As we study the sky with telescopes that record radio signals rather than light, we end up seeing a lot of circles."Allowing astronomers to delve into this uncharted realm include the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), which is made up of 36 powerful antennas, and the South African MeerKAT radio telescope, comprising 64 antennas. Both are continuously involved in performing surveys of the night sky, but ASKAP in particular is leading one called the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) launched in 2022, which seeks to account for every radio source imaginable in the Southern sky.In their essay, Filopovic and his colleagues document some of the most interesting objects this new generation of radio telescopes have found so far.Two of them are stellar oddities known as a Wolf-Rayet star. Dubbed Kklos and WR16, these are massive celestial bodies, perhaps 25 times heavier than the Sun, near the end of their relatively brief lifespans. At this moribund stage, Wolf-Rayets rapidly shed mass, forming extremely luminous shells that, at their source, outshine our Sun by millions of times. That light is extremely faint by the time it reaches our planet, however, and since they only stick around for a few million years, spotting them is rare."In these objects, a previous outflow of material has cleared the space around the star, allowing the current outburst to expand symmetrically in all directions," wrote the astronomers. "This sphere of stellar detritus shows itself as a circle."Radio imagery has also revealed a number of supernova remnants, or the sphere of gases and other material left behind after a massive star burns through its fuel, collapses under its own gravity, and epically explodes."The supernova remnant will be deformed by its environment over time. If one side of the explosion slams into an interstellar cloud, we'll see a squashed shape," explained Filipovic and company. "So, a near-perfect circle in a messy universe is a special find."Lo and behold, ASKAP managed to spot one: a remnant named Teleios. And it's so perfect that nothing like it has ever been seen, according to the astronomers. "This presents us with an opportunity to make inferences about the initial supernova explosion, providing rare insight into one of the most energetic events in the universe," thescientists wrote. Most mysterious of all is the latest instance (viewable here, on the right) of a new class of cosmic objects called Odd Radio Circles (ORCs), which, as the name suggests, are a phenomenon exclusively visible to the wavelength. ORCs are unfathomably large large enough that they often imprison entire galaxies at their centers, with some being ten times as wide as the Milky Way.Tantalizingly, this is just the beginning of our exploration of the "low-surface brightness universe," according to Filopovic, because the ASKAP and MeerKAT are just the prelude to the mother of all telescopes: the Square Kilometer Array, which, once completed, will be the biggest radio observatory in history.Share This Article

  • 'The Righteous Gemstones': When to Watch the Fourth and Final Season
    www.cnet.com
The Righteous Gemstones the HBO original series about a world famous (and quite dysfunctional) televangelist family is nearly back for its fourth season. It's also the final season of the show, which means, the end of the Gemstone saga is finally at hand.In every season, the series has delved deep into the world of megachurches and explored the bizarre underbelly underneath the veneer. In the process, the show has mined the history of the Gemstone family along with the unit's troubled past and present conflicts. Greed, lies and murder only begin to cover it with this group.During the press conference for the new episodes, Danny McBride (who created the series and is also a writer, executive producer and the program's star) discussed the recurring ideas in season four."When I started writing the season, I wasn't sure if I was going to finish the show or not, but I started to notice getting these ideas," he said. "So many themes and story lines were about inclusion and about moving forward, about moving on, that it, really, to me, creatively, became apparent that that was the story that we're telling."McBride continued: "The story is about a lot of things, but the track of the arc that I sort of followed through all four (seasons) is really about grief. It's about losing people and turning to family and figuring out what's next."Starring alongside McBride are Adam Devine, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tim Baltz, Tony Cavalero, Greg Alan Williams, Skyler Gisondo, Walton Goggins, Jennifer Nettles, Megan Mullally and Seann William Scott, among many others.Read on to learn how to watch the fourth and final season of The Righteous Gemstones and how using a VPN may enhance your viewing experience.Read more:Max Streaming Service Review: Loads of Content, but You Have to Make It Fit YouWhen to watch The Righteous Gemstones season 4 on MaxThe nine-episode, fourth and final season of The Righteous Gemstones will premiere Sunday, March 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max. • Marvel Rivals players blast NetEase for poor moderation of racist and sexist slurs

Marvel Rivals players blast NetEase for poor moderation of racist and sexist slurs"I can't [even] leave the match without being penalised, so I just have to play with them."Image credit: NetEase News by Vikki Blake Contributor Published on March 8, 2025 Players have blasted NetEase for a perceived lack of moderation across Marvel Rival lobbies."Forget about loser queue, I want to get out of racist queue," wrote redditor Murkwan on the official Marvel Rivals subreddit. The post has since been locked and deleted, but not before securing 1400 likes and almost 500 comments, the majority of which agreed with the OP.Marvel Rivals launched last December - here's its launch trailer.Watch on YouTubeWhilst many players seem to get grief merely for playing certain characters (primarily Jeff the Landshark), others say they regularly hear racist and sexist slurs, but "haven't gotten a ban notification for weeks" even when they report offending players (thanks, TheGamer)."The problem is that this takes a toll on you," explained one player, responding to a suggestion that players should "mute, report, block" and move on."As a woman, I don't use mic unless with my friends. If I speak with random teammates I'll always get some insult or disgusting comment. I just ignore, report and block, but it's not nice at all. It's not like 'haha what a loser'. First time maybe. The third game you hear something like that you just want to stop playing even if you love the game."So in cases of racism, it's the same," they added. "Yeah, ignore those losers, but reading or hearing insults over and over again makes you really want to not play anymore.""I'm sick of people telling women what they need to do to counter the harassment they're experiencing like that's their job," added another respondent. "That's just the digital version of telling women not to dress some specific way or they're 'asking for it'."Black players also contributed to the thread, with many admitting "comms stay off with randoms" completely, even in ranked play.Other players have taken to X/Twitter, with this commenter writing: "Seriously?? MarvelRivals, wheres the moderation??" asked one player, including a screenshot of a grossly antisemetic username. "Big fan of the game but seeing this mid game is gross.""Its even worse [because] I can't leave the match without being penalised and having my own gameplay experience suffer, so I just have to play with this person," they added."When you think about it, it's even weirder when it's in a Marvel game," said u/fistfightcrash."Stan Lee was pretty clear that what the X-men was originally about was the civil rights movement. This is a Stan Lee quote from the 60s:'Let's lay it right on the line. Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today. It's totally irrational, patently insane to condemn an entire race.'"If you're racist, how could you possibly think this is your space?" they concluded. "Unless you're real old, Marvel was probably vocally anti-racist before you were born."We've reached out to NetEase for comment.Last month, NetEase cut jobs at its US-based Marvel Rivals creative team, despite the game's significant success, claiming the decision was made to "optimise development efficiency". It also insisted it "has not wavered in its global expansion plans" amid reports it's unloading "as much as all" of its overseas game companies due to rising costs.

Welcome back to Week in Review. This week were looking at OpenAI potentially charging $20,000 a month for a specialized AI agent, the unexpected return of early-internet darling Digg, a company genetically engineering mice to have mammoth-like fur, and more! Lets do this.OpenAI could charge up to $20,000 per month for specialized AI agents. According to a report from The Information, OpenAI intends to launch several agent products tailored for different applications. One of the rumored agents, said to be priced at $20,000 a month, will be aimed at supporting PhD-level research. The jaw-dropping figure is indicative of how much cash OpenAI needs right now: The company lost roughly $5 billion last year after paying for costs related to running its services and other expenses.Scale AI is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act, which regulates unpaid wages, misclassification of employees as contractors, and illegal retaliation against workers. The investigation has been active since at least August 2024 and is still ongoing, according to a source familiar with the matter. A spokesperson for Scale AI told TechCrunch that the investigation was initiated during the previous presidential administration and that the startup felt its work was misunderstood by regulators then.A federal judge denied Elon Musks motion for an injunction that would have halted OpenAIs planned transition into a for-profit company, citing insufficient evidence. However, U.S. District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said the court is prepared to hold an expedited trial based on the claim that OpenAIs conversion plan is unlawful. Its the latest turn in Musks lawsuit, which accuses OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman of abandoning its original nonprofit mission. This is TechCrunchs Week in Review, where we recap the weeks biggest news.
