  • All the Trends Coming Out of The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show
    www.elledecor.com
Every February, thousands from the design industry descend on the expansive Las Vegas Convention Center for the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), an annual trade show that showcases the best new products, innovations and trends. The show is owned by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and produced by Emerald Expositions, and welcomes interior and product designers, architects, industry brands and dealers and builders, contractors and editors alike. This year, it seems, more and more brands are catering to interior designers and collaborating with traditionally interiors-driven companies. Think textiles titans Cowtan & Tout and Donghia. Its the latters collection with Artistic Tile that allowed audience members to see firsthand how a classic textile design can be translated into a different surface material such as tile.Courtesy KohlerIn the Donghia x Artistic Tile presentation, an indoor arabesque pool concept showcases Casino Royale, shown in Belgian Bluestone, is stocked in three distinctive colorways and features natural stone and tesserae mosaic. As a first-time attendee myself, it is impressive to see the kitchen, design and renovation business booming and track trends in real time. Heres the latest.Hot StoneWeve seen big trends in stone over the past decade, from White Carrera to Calacatta Viola taking over our mood boards, kitchens, and backsplashes. The next big marble trend? A bold and daring reddish Rosso Levanto marble spotted in nearly all product categories this season. Many new collections prominently featured this beautiful stone, from bathtubs, countertops, mantel surrounds and even shower heads and hardware. The rich, statement-making stone is a warm shade of red that acts almost like a neutral.KallistaKallista debuted a suite of new bath products including a new solid bathtub in Rosso Lovanto stone and the Aileron tub filler featuring multiple textures and architecturally flared faucet handles.EmtekHardware company Emtek featured a new collection within the Emtek Select Program including three lever style and one knob style in this new material offering, Rosso Lovanto stone quarried from Asia. Each style can be endlessly combined with various rosettes and side plates.Upholstered RefrigeratorsNot since ELLE DECOR A-List interior designer Nick Olsen wallpapered his first NYC rental apartment refrigerator many moons ago have I seen such a fun take on treating the kitchen like a decorated interior room. • 4 European satellite firms are vying to replace Starlink in Ukraine
    thenextweb.com
EU governments are in talks with four European satellite firms about providing a back-up service for Starlink in Ukraine, as the region pushes to boost tech sovereignty amid mounting transatlantic tensions.Starlink has provided a vital communications system to Ukraines military since Russias full-scale invasion began in 2022. It allows the armed forces to coordinate drone strikes, identify targets, and stream battlefield data to troops on the ground in real-time.However, European leaders are increasingly concerned about relying on Starlink fears stoked by a Reuters report that US officials had threatened to cut off the system in Ukraine if the country didnt meet their demands on sharing its mineral wealth. Elon Musk, CEO of Starlinks parent company SpaceX, refuted the claims. Nevertheless, the situation has raised doubts over the security implications of Ukraine and broader Europe relying on a single, privately owned network whose boss has direct ties to the Trump administration. In response, discussions with European alternatives to Starlink are in full swing. Leading the pack is French/British satellite provider Eutelsat. The firms CEO, Eva Berneke, confirmed to Bloomberg last week that it was in talks with the EU about extending its internet service to Ukraine. Berneke said Eutelsat was also in very positive talks with Italy, whose government is fiercely debating whether to pick Starlink to provide encrypted communications for government officials. The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!Three other companies the UKs Inmarsat, Luxembourgs SES, and Spains Hisdesat told the Financial Times they were also discussing with governments and EU institutions about how to provide back-up connectivity to Ukraine. Miguel ngel Garca Primo, CEO of Hisdesat, which provides secure satellite communications for governments, said his company had been contacted by several European officials. But replacing Starlink wont be easy. Starlink is by far the largest satellite comms provider, with over 7,000 probes in low-Earth orbit and 40,000 terminals on the ground in Ukraine alone. However, Berneke was bullish on Eutelsats capabilities. She said that the firm could match Starlinks terminal count in Ukraine probably in a couple of months. Eutelsat already has 2,000 terminals in the war-torn country.Whether a Starlink back-up service would comprise a mesh of different operators or just one is unclear at this stage. Either way, these four companies likely present Europes best option right now to cut ties with Musks firm and put the regions satellite communications in safer hands.Longer term, Europe has its bets placed on IRIS, a planned multi-orbit satellite internet constellation expected to switch on in 2030. There are also reports of an Airbus-Leonardo-Thales Alenia Space joint venture called Project Bromo that could challenge Starlinks global dominance. • MagSafe Monday: A MagSafe stand that rotates your iPhone automatically?
    9to5mac.com
MagSafe docks might seem like theyre all the same, and many of them are. Its all about charging, so you look for the ones with the look, finish, or price that you want. Every once in a while, a company will innovate with a feature Id never thought about. The iWALK 3-in-1 MagSafe dock brings just that: an IR sensor so you can change between portrait or landscape without removing your iPhone.MagSafe Monday:Every Monday, Bradley Chambers looks at the latest and greatest in the MagSafe and wireless charging industry to help you get the most out of your Apple devices that support wireless charging.Ive embedded the video above showing how it works, but its a clever idea! As I mentioned, it has a built-in infrared sensor that detects motion and allows the stand to rotate your iPhone between portrait and landscape mode automatically. Its a great feature for FaceTime calls, watching videos, or even flipping between different apps without manually adjusting your iPhoneIn my real-world use, its surprisingly fast and smooth. When switching orientations, the movement feels naturalthere is no clunkiness or weird delays. I was shocked at how smooth it was. Its a neat way to go from a FaceTime call to re-watching a show (looking at you, season 2 of Severance). Whats in the box?The iWALK 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Stand delivers 15W fast wireless charging if you have a compatible iPhone. It also includes spots for AirPods and an Apple Watch that pops, making it a great 3-in-1 charger. The kit includes a 20W adapter and USB-C to C cable to ensure youre getting full power without needing to buy extra cords or worry if you have the right wattage adaptor. Part of what I like about it is that its compact and foldable, making it a strong option for both home use and travel. When folded, its about the size of a small coffee mug, meaning it wont take up much space in a bag. Unfolded, it offers an adjustable 0-65 viewing angle, so youre not stuck at one height or angle. The Apple Watch slot pops in and out on a spring. When raised, youll find the spot for AirPods. Overall, The build feels solid, with a strong magnet that securely holds an iPhone in place, even when its rotating.Wrap upThe selling feature here is the auto rotation. If youre the type of person to swap from needing to use an iPhone at portrait or landscape, then youll love the iWALK 3 in 1 Wireless Charging Stand. It checks all the boxes otherwise (15-watt charging, Apple Watch/AirPods support, and includes everything needed in the box). I love the process of the Apple Watch slot coming in and out as well incredibly handy. You can buy it in white or black from Amazon or directly from iWalk. Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Saudi Arabia's 100-Mile Skyscraper Is Turning Into a Disaster
    futurism.com
The Saudi crown family's megalomaniac dreams of building a gigantic city of the future in the middle of the desert are getting a brutal reality check.Saudi Arabia's plans for Neom, a futuristic fever dream which includes a massive all-inclusive resort on the coast, a second ski resort in the mountains, and an up to 106 miles-long pair of 1,600-foot skyscrapers called The Line, is running into major financial problems. As the Wall Street Journal reports, capital expenditure estimates to build Neom to what officials call its "end-state" by 2080 have ballooned to $8.8 trillion, which is over 25 times the kingdom's annual budget.Worse yet, an audit report reviewed by the newspaper found that officials were trying to fudge the numbers to hide evidence of the project's ballooning costs. The audit found "evidence of deliberate manipulation" of finances by "certain members of management."It's a damning new development that highlights the grandiose and unrealistic goals set by Neom's main advocate, Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.According to the WSJ, officials are trying to shield the royal from harsh realities as well. For instance, in an apparent attempt to make it appear as if Neom's ski resort had an internal rate of return that met some sky-high expectations, officials hiked up the projected prices of staying at the yet-to-be-completed site. One "boutique hiking hotel" room, previously priced at $489, was readjusted to cost $1,866. An "inventive glamping" site shot up in price from $216 to $794 a night. These efforts were reportedly aided by McKinsey consultants hired by the project.Officials then tried to hide the manipulation of costs. An email revealed that Antoni Vives, who was put in charge of Neom's coastal resort called Sindalah, told consultants that "we must not proactively mention cost at all" before a key meeting, per the WSJ.The Line, in particular, has shot up in costs significantly. The original plan was to have the skyscraper stretch 100 miles through the desert, but that plan is looking increasingly unlikely. Even schemes for a first piece of the skyscraper were revised from ten miles to just 1.5 miles within the next decade.Recommendations to reduce the planned height of the pair of skyscrapers to around 1,000 feet from 1,600 feet to save costs were vehemently opposed by crown prince bin Salman himself.Still, the current goal is to open up the first half of the project's first piece by 2034."Well start to go vertical hopefully at the end of this year," The Line development lead Denis Hickey said at this year's World Economic Forum, as quoted by the WSJ.In short, the kingdom's Neom project appears to have turned into a mess of unprecedented proportions. And even leadership is on some shaky grounds. Neom's former CEO Nadhmi al-Nasr quit in November, weeks after a documentary alleged that tens of thousands of foreign workers had already died during the city's construction. As of right now, Sindalah is still largely unfinished, despite Saudi officials throwing a lavish, $45 million launch party in October. The event was attended by high-profile celebrities, including actor Will Smith and football quarterback Tom Brady. But the resort's golf course and hotels have yet to open to the public four months later.Meanwhile, consulting firm McKinsey is making bank. According to the WSJ, the company has earned more than $130 million a year for its services. A spokesperson, however, denied that the firm "has been involved in the manipulation of financial reporting."Share This Article

  • AIs Impact on Cloud Spending: The Hunger for Capacity
    www.informationweek.com
Spending on artificial intelligence applications, particularly generative AI, is driving up the cost of enterprise cloud computing. These costs climbed an average of 30%, according to a 2024 report commissioned by Tangoe in October, a technology expense management solution provider and conducted by Vanson Bourne. In addition, 72% of IT and financial leaders believed that GenAI-led cloud spending had become unmanageable.GenAI is creating a cloud boom that will take IT expenditures to new heights, Chris Ortbals, chief product officer at Tangoe, said in a statement. With year-over-year cloud spending up 30%, we are seeing the financial fallout of AI demands. Left unmanaged, GenAI has the potential to make innovation financially unsustainable.Ortbals even described cloud costs as lethal to GenAI.The clouds hidden costs and unpredictable invoices can become the silent killer of GenAI, added Ortbals. The more urgently companies adopt comprehensive cost management FinOps strategies, the easier it is for them to turn GenAIs promise into lasting innovation instead of runaway expenses and technical debt.Cloud costs are rising amid inflation and technical debt, Ortbals wrote in Forbes. He noted that it is the role of CIOs to pay for shared services as the habitual corporate financier even when costs increase. As these cloud costs climb, tensions rise between IT and finance, Ortbals wrote.Related:How AI Is Impacting the Cloud LandscapeCloud spending is indeed increasing because of the demands of AI, explains Matt Hobbs, cloud, engineering, data and AI leader at PwC.If you look at the resource intensity of the very specific workloads youre using it for, in combination with the fact that those resources are super constrained, it is keeping those costs really high right now, Hobbs tells InformationWeek.AI workloads are costly because organizations are hungry for capacity and they are using cloud resources to unify their data environment, he says.Speed matters a lot here, and so if youre in the cloud, you have the ability to go a lot faster than if youre running on prem, Hobbs says.As organizations move from on-prem infrastructure and shut down data centers to move to the cloud, even with AI driving up costs, companies cloud costs were increasing anyway, Hobbs suggests. In addition, Hobbs notes the duplicative costs that occur as AI companies offer their own direct LLM services and cloud providers integrate them as well.If you look at AI as a driver toward cloud costs, thats a question of, is it actually more expensive, or is it a shift toward cloud thats happening because of AI? Hobbs says.Related:As the life cycle of infrastructure gets shorter and GPUs get more powerful, cloud costs go up, explains Dmitry Panenkov, CEO and founder at cloud-management platform Emma.So basically, the life cycle is getting shorter, and each and every accelerator they release is more powerful, but on the other hand, is also more expensive, and this automatically drives up your costs, Panenkov explains. So, you need to pay more if you want to get these GPUs, and the providers need to pay more. And then if you train the models on top-notch accelerators, you pay more per hour to ramp up this capacity.Although cloud costs are increasing due to AI, organizations are not slowing down in spending on cloud or AI, according to Hobbs.Nic Benders, chief technical strategist for New Relic, agrees that spending will be robust for infrastructure such as cloud amid AIs growth.I believe IT spend is actually constrained by the amount of money in IT, not by the things to spend it on, Benders says. So, I believe that we will continue to see rapid growth in spending on infrastructure. How AI Tools Help Forecast Cloud SpendingRelated:Although AI may make cloud costs climb, AI tools can also help manage these costs and alleviate cloud spending. Organizations can use predictive analytics to study past usage patterns. In addition, machine learning can train models on past usage patterns and auto-scale use of cloud resources.Emma uses AI to analyze the behavior of cloud workloads and allow organizations to adjust their environments to reduce their cloud bills, Panenkov says. He predicts that AI costs and thus cloud costs will go down as the price of GPU accelerators drop.We have a networking backbone that interconnects the clouds, and we have AI algorithms to define the best and most optimal route from one service provider to another, which is associated with a smaller cost, Panenkov says.Benders also sees the move to expensive infrastructure such as GPU accelerators as short-term.Just as the tech industry moved from three nodes in a cluster to thousands of nodes in a cluster and hardware got less expensive, Benders sees a similar pattern with AI.I suspect that we're going to see the same thing in the AI-driven load that, if it matures, will move away from those kinds of cutting-edge experimental systems, but thats not going to be for some years now. So, I think were in a phase right now where people are going to be spending their money on those cutting-edge systems, he says, referring to GPU accelerators. How CIOs Should Approach AI and Cloud Spending Going forwardPanenkov recommends a hybrid model of on premises and cloud to manage cloud costs. The best model to work with is a hybrid model, where you have your on-premises environment where you can train your models, Panenkov says. But in case you need to scale and pick up more GPU instances to continue your training of your model, you can scale the workloads up into the cloud, and for short period of time, you can rent certain instances with the cloud service provider, so that we think is the right approach.Hobbs advises that organizations assess what they are using AI services for when choosing their infrastructure. By deploying workloads -- whether cloud or AI -- at the edge as part of a hybrid cloud setup, organizations can drive down overall cloud costs. When enterprise data is connected, companies naturally leverage the centralized cloud, Hobbs explains. However, when data becomes disconnected at the edge, placing computing power locally can significantly lower costs. For example, Hobbs notes that a telco company might serve its customers through both private and public clouds. In this arrangement, the private cloud delivers direct value to end users, while the public cloud offers operational efficiencies for enterprises.I think it matters more where an organization is on its cloud journey -- thats what truly drives the architectural decision -- than merely following a fixed pattern of delivering an end service to a customer, Hobbs says.
