• Elon Musk Searching for Mysterious Billionaire Whos Making Everyone Hate Tesla
    futurism.com
Remember that iconic skit on "I Think You Should Leave" where a hot dog-shaped car crashes into a building, and then as the crowd demands answers, a man in a hot dog outfit who clearly crashed the car appears and starts demanding that the driver be identified?"We're all trying to find the guy who did this," huffs the hot dog man, played by Tim Robinson.Well, that's pretty much the situation with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. He's spent the last few months rampaging through the federal government, resulting in an enormous amount of chaos and a historic decline in Tesla sales that's currently causing the automaker's stock value to collapse. In other words, there's clearly a billionaire whose unpopular actions are responsible for Tesla's woes, and it's Musk himself. But the multi-hyphenate businessman, who's never been comfortable looking in the mirror, is instead blaming a shady cabal of Democratic billionaires for his self-inflicted woes.In a post on the social network he spent $44 billion to purchase, Elon Musk claimed that an "investigation" had found that ActBlue, a fundraising platform used by liberal and progressive campaigns to raise money, is responsible for the increasing number of protests against his electric vehicle company.According to Musk, the mysterious investigation named five groups Troublemakers, Disruption Project, Rise & Resist, Indivisible Project, and the Democratic Socialists of America that were "funded by" ActBlue and were the main drivers behind the spate of Tesla protests roiling the company in recent months. It doesn't take all that much investigative prowess, however, to find that all of those grassroots organizations have publicly posted information about protests against Musk at Tesla dealerships. After erroneously claiming that a nonprofit fundraising platform is ponying up the money for nationwide protests, Musk claimed to call out ActBlue's founders. In his rush to place blame on anyone but himself, the South African emerald scion pointed the finger at George Soros, a fellow billionaire who acts as a popular conservative punching bag, and who doesn't have any documented ties to ActBlue.Along with Soros, Musk also named multiple other ActBlue "funders," including LinkedIn cofounder and PayPal mafia member Reid Hoffman, progressive oil money heiress Leah Hunt-Hendrix, ProPublica financier Herbert Sandler, and Brennan Center patron Patricia Bauman the latter two of whom, strikingly, are both dead. Were this level of "investigation" to be presented as-is in an undergraduate journalism class, the student behind it would probably fail. Musk, however, is no J-school pupil, and the final forte of his argument centers around a real-life recent revelation from theNew York Times about several senior ActBlue officials resigning from the nonprofit though he claims, incorrectly, that they did so "this week" when that staff exodus reportedly occurred weeks ago.It remains unclear which investigation Musk is getting his information from. Both the House Republicans and an outside counsel hired by ActBlue's staff unions are looking into the nonprofit platform's practices, with the former alleging that some of its donations broke campaign finance regulations and the latter presumably looking into whether those employees were subjected to wrongful internal retaliation.None of that context, of course, matters to the billionairewhose own donations allegedly broke campaign finance law especially because he's the reason people hate Tesla now.Share This Article

  • Incoming NASA Administrator Brags That He Has No Idea What's Going On
    futurism.com
It's been four months since president Donald Trump tapped billionaire tech founder and SpaceX space tourist Jared Isaacman as the new head of NASA.Isaacman has reportedly been preparing for his upcoming confirmation hearing in Washington, DC. But given his latest tweet, he still has a lot to learn. The man, who's about to oversee an agency that's expected to be gutted in the coming months and years, knows astonishingly little of what's going on and he seems proud of that fact.According to a recent reporting by Ars Technica, the Trump administration is looking to slash the space agency's science budget by as much as 50 percent, which could prove disastrous for the future of space research. You'd think that would be top of mind for Isaacman, but his head is instead blissfully empty."I'm a humble nominee on the outside, hoping for a chance to contribute," he tweeted over the weekend, responding to a post that referenced the news. "I don't know anything about those supposed cuts, but the President said he's targeting fraud, waste & abuse w/ a scalpel not a hatchet."It's a surprisingly tone-deaf outburst that rehashes largely meaningless claims made by president Donald Trump during a recent Cabinet meeting.Isacman downplayed Ars' reporting, dismissing it as "rumor and speculation."But what if there's some truth to those rumors? Does Isaacman really not know what's going on, despite being widely expected to take control of NASA? If there's one person who should arguably be clued into any upcoming, potentially existential cuts to NASA's budget, it should be him."This is not a good sign," Keith Cowing, founder of an unofficial NASA advocacy group called NASA Watch, responded. "It would seem by virtue of this tweet that [Isaacman]has not been following the news that closely even if he is still a nominee.""Nominees should avoid making public comments and IMHO this would have been a perfect opportunity to pass on commenting," Cowing added.SpaceX CEO and unelected White House advisor Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency has been causing mass confusion in Washington, DC, after early reports suggested that over 1,000 NASA employees wereput on the chopping block last month. Not long after, the Houston Chronicle reported that they'd been spared as part of a chaotic last-minute decision.Amidst the confusion, morale at the agency reached "absurdly low" levels last month, as Ars reported at the time.Even NASA's flagship Artemis program, which is aiming to return astronauts to the surface of the Moon before the end of the decade, appears to be in serious danger, with Musk repeatedly voicing his desire to skip the Moon and go straight to Mars instead.Meanwhile, apart from spending his time retweeting archival pictures of Air Force jets, Isaacman has been strikingly quiet. In a statement, he called to develop tech that unlocks "mission optionality from the Moon to Mars and beyond," but treated space as an untapped source of profit rather than a chance to learn about the origins of humanity, our planet's past, and ways to address the challenges we're facing as a species."Space holds unparalleled potential for breakthroughs in manufacturing, biotechnology, mining, and perhaps even pathways to new sources of energy," Isaacman wrote in his announcement, calling for NASA to "usher in an era where humanity becomes a true spacefaring civilization."In other words, his position on the kind of scientific research that could soon be axed remains as vague as ever.Isaacman's confirmation will be overseen by senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) a date has yet to be announced which may force him to carefully toe the line. Why? Musk again: earlier this year, the billionaire called for the International Space Station to be deorbited three years early because, he insisted, the scientific research being done on the orbital outpost was no longer worth it.Cruz is an outspoken and longtime advocate of the space station, which could put Isaacman in an awkward position. Either he appeals to the desires of Congress, or tries to make sense of and advocate for the whims of the world's richest person. It's an unenviable task that's bound to lead to friction, and whether he'll ultimately be up to the task remains to be seen.More on Isaacman: It Kinda Sounds Like NASA Is Gutting Its Plans for a Moon LandingShare This Article

When you open a CD, you know precisely how much interest you'll earn because your rate is fixed for the term. But not all of that interest is yours to keep. The government views any interest accrued on CDs, savings and other deposits as taxable income, which means you must report it and pay the government its share. If you have a CD that's earned interest over the tax year, here's what you need to know. TAX SOFTWARE DEALS OF THE WEEK H&R Block Free Simple Tax Returns eFile: $0 (save $0) TurboTax Deluxe 2024 (Federal and State, PC/Mac Download): $56 (save $24) TurboTax Premier 2024 (Federal and State, PC/Mac Download): $83 (save $32) TaxSlayer Classic Plan: $28 (save $10) Deals are selected by the CNET Group commerce team, and may be unrelated to this article. This story is part of Taxes 2025, CNET's coverage of the best tax software, tax tips and everything else you need to file your return and track your refund. Read more: Best Tax Software of 2025How are CDs taxed?"Interest paid on your CDs will be taxed as ordinary income just like wages when you file your taxes," said Lisa Greene-Lewis, a certified public accountant with TurboTax.That means your CD interest is taxed at your ordinary federal income tax rate based on your tax bracket. Tax rates for the year 2024 range from 10% to 37% and depend on your income and filing status, Greene-Lewis said. When do you pay taxes on a CD?If you earn at least $10 in interest from a CD during a year, your financial institution must report that interest to the IRS. If you invest in a short-term CD that matures the same year it was purchased, you'll have to pay tax on it for that year. If you invest in a long-term CD that matures after 12 months or more, you'll have to pay taxes on whatever interest accrues annually along the way."The interest will be reported and claimed on your taxes for the year it was paid," Greene-Lewis said. For example, let's say you opened a two-year CD in January 2024 that matures in January 2026. When you file your 2024 tax return, you'll pay taxes on the interest you accumulated in the CD through the end of that year. When you file your 2025 return, you'll pay taxes on the interest earned that year. And in 2026, you'll owe taxes on the interest accumulated in January of that year. You should receive Form 1099-INT reporting how much interest you earned each tax year by Jan. 31, Greene-Lewis said. But "even if you don't receive a copy, you still should report the interest earned on your taxes," she said. Are CD earnings subject to federal and state taxes? The interest you earn on a CD is subject to federal, state and local taxation, with tax laws varying by jurisdiction. Unless you live in a state with no income tax, you should expect to owe both federal and state taxes on your CD interest.Since state-level tax brackets are a bit more complicated than federal tiers, you can use this breakdown from the Tax Foundation to get an estimate of the percentage of your CD earnings that will go to the state government. Note that state laws on interest income vary widely. New Hampshire, for example, just eliminated its state tax on interest and dividends.Fifth Third's CD Maturity Calculator is a helpful tool for estimating your federal and state tax bill (toggle the advanced feature to access it).How does withdrawal from a CD affect your taxes? You'll pay taxes on your CD interest regardless of whether you withdraw the money. For example, let's say you open a five-year CD right now and plan to leave it untouched until the term is up. You'll be paying taxes on interest until the CD reaches maturity, and you'll receive a 1099-INT form for every year the CD accrues interest. If you decide to take out your money before the CD matures, most banks and credit unions will hit you with an early withdrawal penalty. You can deduct the cost of the penalty on your taxes, reducing what you owe.So let's say you earned $70 in interest in a calendar year, but you paid a $45 early withdrawal penalty because you needed the funds before the term was over. You'll owe taxes only on $35 of interest. How do you report CD interest on your tax return?Your bank or credit union will likely mail you a copy of your 1099-INT form, or you can access it through your online account. The interest you've earned will be in Box 1 of the form. You'll need to enter that number in the "taxable interest" section of whatever tax return form you file with the IRS. If you earned more than $1,500 in interest and dividends between your CD and other investments, you'll need to file a Schedule B.Ready to file your return? Check out CNET's tax partners. Can you delay paying taxes on CD interest? You can't avoid reporting CD interest on your tax return, but you may be able to delay your payment obligation."You can potentially lower or avoid paying taxes on CD interest by purchasing a CD in a tax-advantaged account like an IRA or 401(k)," Greene-Lewis said. By putting your CD in one of these tax-deferred accounts, you won't pay taxes on the interest until you withdraw the funds during retirement, she said. The upside is that you may be in a significantly lower tax bracket when you retire. The downside is that your interest earnings from CDs will likely be much lower than you'd get from riskier investments in the stock market. So while you can shrink your tax bill with this approach, you might be limiting your overall retirement fund. The bottom lineA certificate of deposit can be a valuable part of your savings strategy, but when you're calculating your interest earnings, don't forget that the government will want its share.Tax reporting has many nuances: standard versus itemized deductions, charitable contributions, mortgage interest deductions and more. It might be worth it to hire a tax professionalto ensure you follow the appropriate guidelines and minimize your stress. More tax resources

  • 20 Best Gifts for Gamers for 2025
    www.cnet.com
For popular exclusive games like Astro Bot, the PS5 is the way to go (although many of these games eventually make it to PCs much later on). The PS5's big advantage is its modernized, redesigned controller, which gives better haptic feedback. The PS Plus subscription serviceoffers a big, Netflix-like catalog of monthly games, although mostly older ones. It's nearly impossible to find the older version of the console unless you buy refurbished; the current model usually has "slim" somewhere in the name; it's more compact than the original with a little more storage (1TB), but one reason it's smaller is because Sony removed the DVD drive, which is now an option. It's not cheap, and if you're willing to drop even more cash, the $700 PS5 Prolaunched in early November. It's not the next-gen model (we won't see that for a while). But it's the most powerful console on the market, running games faster and at higher resolutions.Read ourPS5 reviewand slim PS5 hands-on.

  • Xbox next-gen console reportedly targeting 2027, with handheld device due this year
    www.eurogamer.net
Xbox next-gen console reportedly targeting 2027, with handheld device due this yearPlay anywhere.Image credit: Microsoft/Eurogamer News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on March 10, 2025 Microsoft is reportedly aiming to release its next-gen Xbox Series X/S successor in 2027, with a much-rumoured handheld Xbox arriving later this year. That's according to Windows Central, which reports an Xbox Series X/S successor has been greenlit "all the way up to [Microsoft] CEO Satya Nadella" and is now "fully in production". The publication doesn't have much to share in the way of specifics, but it claims the new console is a "premium successor to the powerful Xbox Series X", and is currently slated for a 2027 release.Microsoft has, of course, already confirmed it's working on an Series X/S successor, with Xbox president Sarah Bond last year saying - amid fan fears the company may be looking to abandon the console market - it was "invested in [its] next-generation road map" and "focused on... delivering the largest technical leap that you will have ever seen in a hardware generation."Digital Foundry discusses Sony's rumoured portable PS5.Watch on YouTubeWhile 2027 is obviously still some considerable way off, Windows Central says Microsoft has other Xbox hardware plans due to reach fruition much sooner. The company is reportedly currently working alongside an unspecified "PC gaming OEM" to launch an Xbox-branded gaming handheld later this year. It's claimed the device is being developed under the codename Keenan, and will - according to Windows Central's sources - look "unmistakably 'Xbox'", sporting familiar design sensibilities and even an Xbox guide button. The idea of an Xbox handheld is nothing new. Back in 2017, Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed Microsoft had "roughly designed an Xbox handheld" in the past. However, he's repeatedly returned to the subject over the last year, fuelling speculation the project had been revived. When questioned about a potential Xbox handheld last November, Spencer suggested any such devices would still be a few years away, but with Switch 2 looming, and reports suggesting Sony is also working on its own handheld device in the form of portable PS5, it might be Microsoft felt the need to accelerate its plans.Interestingly, Windows Central claims Microsoft is also internally developing its own Xbox gaming handheld, separate from this year's partner machine, which is due to release alongside its Series X/S successor and "several new controller options" in 2027.All this comes after a 2024 that saw Microsoft's continued dedication to the console market repeatedly questioned, particularly following its decision to bring select first-party Xbox games to other platforms. And while that multiplatform strategy is accelerating in 2025, the company has been keen to reiterate its commitment to the Xbox hardware business - last year announcing three new Xbox console variants alongside talk of its next-gen plans.

  • The Unusual Color Palette of Piero Portaluppi Is Making a Comeback
    www.architecturaldigest.com
If youve watched Luca Guadagninos 2009 film I Am Love then youre familiar with the Rationalist architecture of Piero Portaluppi, whether you realize it or not. The mesmerizing Milanese manse Portaluppi designed in the early 1930s for the industrialist Necchi Campiglios serves as the luscious background for Guadagninos tale of familial intrigue. Its iconic veranda with crosshatch marble floors host impromptu meetings; its stone staircase allows for more than one dramatic entrance.Paloma Elsessers Brooklyn kitchen, designed by Gregory Rockwell Interiors, features a kitchen island made of green marble and walnut.Frank Frances StudioLuxury, as most people perceive it, doesnt really exist in this house. Its very severe, and [it] feels almost unmovable, like a piece of rock, Guadagnino told The New York Times in 2010. Trimmed in walnut, parchment, and, most memorably, richly hued stone, it is at once decorative and disciplined. For many of us these days, that is luxury defined.Massimiliano Locatelli's green marble sink and stool fit right into the Portaluppi palette.De Pasquale+MaffiniIts almost like Portaluppi painted with stone, says Hester Hodde of Gregory Rockwell Interiors, who chose Verde Alpi (what she calls the quintessential green Italian stone) for Paloma Elsessers Brooklyn kitchen island. Consider the Verde Alpi sinks spotted in a Milan pied--terre conjured by Giampiero Tagliaferri for a young art collector, or Massimiliano Locatellis slick apartment in the same city. Meanwhile, the doorways trimmed in green marble in a Paris apartment by Luis Laplace recall a similar feature in the Portaluppi-designed Massimodecarlo Gallery, one of more than 100 buildings he lent his hand to around Milan. The sunroom at Villa Necchi in Milan, designed by Piero Portaluppi and built in the early 1930s.Cavan Images / GettyIn Abigail Turins San Francisco office, an Ettore Sottsass chair pulls up to a custom desk with a Verde Alpi marble top.Photo: Sang AnWe often incorporate deep, lacquered tones of brown, green, and red in our residential and commercial projects, explains Tagliaferri, who used this spread in his inaugural collection for Minotti, which debuted last year. These rich colors allow us to either emphasize an architectural element or make a space subtly recede, creating a sense of depth and mystery. In the aforementioned Milan apartment, for example, he used a dark burgundy hue on the doorways to make them disappear; meanwhile, at the Sant Ambroeus restaurant he designed in Aspen, he used slabs of green marble and a deep forest-hued color on the ceiling. The primary bath in this Tbilisi, Georgia, town house by Tinatin Kilaberidze features a primary bathroom with a burgundy marble floor.Photo: William Jess LairdKilaberidze stretched the green marble fireplace laterally to create a sense of visual weight in the all-white room.Photo: William Jess LairdIn the market, this color combo has been finding particular relevance in the bathroom, where countertops, hardware, and more are turning up the drama. Ann Sacks, which recently expanded into furniture, showcased a console table at KBIS this year in a rich, veined oxblood that feels straight out of a Milanese entryway. In Elsessers jaw-dropping primary bathroom, we see the look retooled for maximum impact, with slabs of red Rosso Francia marble paired with walnut millwork and a Benjamin Moore pistachio hue on the walls.
