  • Foster + Partners reveals plans for Man Utds new 100,000-seat stadium
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
The clubs billionaire co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, says the structure could be built within five years and would be the world's greatest football stadium. It remains unclear what will happen to the Premier League football clubs current Old Trafford ground, which has been its home for the last 115 years. In 2024 Manchester United officials recommended building an all-new stadium, at a cost of around 2 billion, rather than upgrading the existing structure. It concluded that refurbishment would cost between 1 billion and 1.2 billion and reduce stadium capacity while works took place.AdvertisementDescribing his vision for the all-new stadium, Fosters founder, Manchester-born Norman Foster, 89, said: It starts with the idea of making something which is so intense it brings you close to the pitch. Acoustically it cultivates the roar.As you move away from the stadium, it is not a fortress surrounded by a sea of cars. Its contained by an umbrella that harvests solar energy and rainwater and encloses arguably the largest public space in the world.Ratcliffe added: Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home.Fosters, which famously worked on the new Wembley stadium, has also drawn up a masterplan for the areas around the grounds in the Salford Quays. This wider vision includes homes and workspaces which will benefit the local community. The new stadium plans include a new public plaza which is reportedly 'twice the size of Trafalgar Square' and three 200m-high masts - described as 'the trident' - to support the lightweight roof.AdvertisementIt is not known how the football club, which announced another round of redundancies last month to 'return the club to profitability', plans to fund the project. • Ford Tested Its Gen 2 NACS Adapter by Running It Over With an F-150
    www.cnet.com
It's been a year since Ford's EVs unlocked third-party access to Tesla's Supercharger network using complimentary NACS Fast Charging Adapters. This week, the automaker doubled down on its commitment to the North American Charging System, adding NACS Fast Charger Routing via Apple Maps in CarPlay and a second-gen NACS Fast Charging Adapter adapter for its F-150 Lighting electric pickup and Mustang Mach-E SUV. The new adapter promises to be easier and more reliable to use.In 2023, Ford was the first of a deluge of automakers to announce support for the Tesla-pioneered North American Charging System. A year later, it was the first to make good on the pledge by supplying a free NACS charging adapter to any owner who requested one between February and June of 2024. Today, one year later, Ford has fulfilled that initial commitment, shipping around 140,000 complementary adapters to reservation holders across the US. According to the automaker, its drivers make extensive use of those adapters. Nearly 20% of Ford EV charging visits away from home happen at Tesla Supercharger stations. NACS and Tesla Supercharger stations now appear as suggestions when planning large trips via Apple CarPlay. FordThe addition of Tesla's V3 Superchargers grows the BlueOval Charge Network -- Ford's database of compatible charging stations -- to an estimated 44,000 DC fast charging points across North America. Drivers can find and navigate to those stations via their vehicle's on-board navigation, the FordPass app and, now, Apple Maps EV Routing.Just yesterday, Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning drivers gained the ability to include NACS fast charging stations into trips calculated via Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay. Apple Maps can now detect the host EV's state of charge to calculate when you'll need to plug in and can suggest charging stops along the route, including Tesla Superchargers, when planning longer trips. Suggested stops at NACS stations include a warning reminding you to bring the Fast Charging Adapter. However, because Apple CarPlay is separate from the core EV systems, battery preconditioning is not supported alongside Apple Maps EV routing. Enlarge Image To test the new adapter, Ford and Lectron subjected it to snow, water, impact and even a crush test beneath an F-150 Lightning EV. FordToday, Ford also announced the second-gen NACS adapter. Co-developed with EV charging accessory manufacturer Lectron, the new Ford Fast Charging Adapter is said to be more robust and reliable, able to stand up to a wide variety of climates, conditions and abuses that owners may subject it to over the vehicle's lifetime -- from snow to water submersion to being run over by an F-150 Lightning electric truck. The adapter has an integrated handle that's more ergonomic and easier to grip than the stubby previous generation, as well as new vehicle interlock that prevents accidentally unplugging the adapter during charging. At $200 when ordered from Ford's website or service centers, the new Ford Fast Charging Adapter is also slightly cheaper than its $230 predecessor -- and given Lectron's experience building and shipping its own adapter, I'd wager it's also more likely to be in stock.

  • Food Recalls Are Down, but Food Poisoning Deaths Are Up
    www.scientificamerican.com
March 11, 20256 min readAre Foodborne Illnesses and Deaths in the U.S. Worsening? New Data on Recalls ExplainDespite headlines, there were fewer food recalls in 2024 than in 2023, but more people died from food poisoning linked to outbreaksBy Lori Youmshajekian edited by Lauren J. Young Mediterranean/Getty ImagesFood recalls seemed relentless in the U.S. last year. Cucumbers, eggs, even big-brand products such as McDonalds Quarter Pounders and Boars Head deli meats were implicated in dozens of foodborne illness cases, leaving many questioning whether their favorite foods were safe to eat.But surprisingly, the total number of recalls issued by federal agencies in 2024 actually declined compared with 2023, according to a new report published by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund, a nonprofit advocacy group. What did worsen was the severity of outbreaks, with hospitalizations and deaths linked to contaminated foods doubling from the previous year. And experts say these numbers only capture a small fraction of foodborne illnesses occurring nationwide.Food safety oversight in the U.S. is split between two agencies. One is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; it regulates more than three quarters of the food supply, including dairy, produce and packaged foods. The other is the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees meat, poultry and some egg products. In 2024 the two agencies announced 296 recallsa 5 percent decrease from the 313 recalls in 2023. The biggest cause of recalls in 2024 was bacterial contamination, followed by undisclosed allergens such as peanuts and tree nuts.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. Teresa Murray and Stanton Cope. U.S. PIRG Education Fund, February 2025 (data)While recalls declined, cases of foodborne illness reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rose from 1,118 in 2023 to 1,392 last year. Whats more, the new PIRG report highlights that food recalls caused more severe illness in 2024 compared with previous years. Outbreak-related deaths rose from eight in 2023 to 19 last year, according to the report, which also said hospitalizations increased from 230 in 2023 to 487 in 2024. But the real number is likely much, much higher, says Darin Detwiler, an associate teaching professor and food safety expert at Northeastern University, who wasnt involved in the new analysis. The CDC estimates that about one in six Americans get sick from foodborne illness each year, leading to about 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. The discrepancy occurs in part because people dont tend to go to the doctor for common symptoms of food poisoning, such as diarrhea or vomiting unless theyre really, really sick, explains Barbara Kowalcyk, an associate professor and director of the Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security at George Washington University, who was not involved in the new study. In an experiment carried out between 2012 and 2017 in New York City, scientists searched Yelp restaurant reviews for keywords such as vomit or sick and found 45 percent more complaints of foodborne illness than city officials would typically receive in that period. You tend to see the most severe cases in the surveillance system, Kowalcyk says. But whether food is becoming less safe generally is more complicated to determine, Kowalcyk says. Less than 5 percent of all foodborne illnesses are linked to an outbreak with an identified source. So were looking at a very small piece of the pie, she says. The deadliest outbreak in 2024 involved Boars Head deli meats, which were associated with 60 hospitalizations and 10 deaths across 19 states. Inspection reports revealed numerous violations at the companys plant in Virginia, including unsanitary conditions, which likely contributed to the outbreak. Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria deemed responsible, can survive in cold environments and remain on surfaces for long periods of time, making it more resilient than other pathogens. In February the FDA announced a recall of frozen shakes delivered to hospitals and care facilities for Listeria contamination, solving a years-old food illness mystery. The frozen shakes were linked to 12 deaths across 21 states, going as far back as 2018, highlighting the challenge of tracing foodborne illnesses to their sources.Amanda Montaez; Source: Food for Thought 2025. Teresa Murray and Stanton Cope. U.S. PIRG Education Fund, February 2025 (data)Responding to a request for comment, Boars Head directed Scientific American to the companys updated safety response, which emphasizes its significant progress in safety and quality measures since the 2024 Listeria outbreak. The improvements included increased Listeria sampling at facilities, third-party sanitation training and the establishment of an independent food safety advisory council.Escherichia coli and Salmonella were two other bacteria behind several outbreaks last year, including contaminated organic carrots, charcuterie meats, cucumbers, eggs and slivered onions on McDonalds Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The latter was the likely source of 34 hospitalizations and one death, according to the FDA. (A McDonalds representative directed Scientific American to a food safety portal about the outbreak.) E. coli can spread through irrigation water that has been contaminated with animal feces or via cross contamination, undercooked meat, unwashed produce or poor hygiene. The bacterium can even travel on dust that winds up on produce. Salmonella, one of the most common foodborne pathogens, often originates from poultry but can spread to raw vegetables and processed foods through improper handling or through contaminated water and soil. Fresh produce is particularly susceptible because people dont always cook it before consumption. The sheer scale of recent outbreaks, which often spanned multiple states, is another a growing concern among experts. Look at the number of states involved, Detwiler says. It keeps getting larger. He attributes this to a lack of mandatory holding periods for foods awaiting safety test results. If companies held products for just 24 hours before shipping, we could contain outbreaks faster, he says.People can also continue to get sick long after a recall has been issued. Foods with a long shelf life, such as flour, peanut butter or frozen fruit, are often stored away in household cabinets and might get eaten long after any contamination was detected. We need food producers to be accountable, and make sure that the government plays its role in verifying that their food safety systems are working as intended. Barbara Kowalcyk, associate professor and institute directorDelays in the food safety notification system can also prevent consumers from quickly finding out about recalls and avoiding affected products. After detecting a contamination that is widespread or poses a significant health risk, the FDA or USDA issue public alerts or recall noticesoften, however, one of the biggest challenges for containing an outbreak is the speed with which consumers find out. Its literally days that make the difference, Detwiler says. Unless these hit the news outlets, consumers need to be proactive and learn of recalls on their own. Some grocery stores alert customers through loyalty programs, but their contact information may not always be correct, Kowalcyk says. The FDA, USDA and CDC also share food recalls via social media, yet recent executive orders restricting federal health agencies external communications add another layer of great concern, Detwiler says. For consumers, the best defense for now is vigilance. Experts advise people should use thermometers to ensure food is sufficiently cooked, follow safe food handling guidelines, including washing hands and utensils, and report foodborne illnesses to public health authorities. Still, Kowalcyk adds, of all the parties involved in the food distribution process, consumers have the least amount of control over the system. We need food producers to be accountable, she says, and make sure that the government plays its role in verifying that their food safety systems are working as intended.Detwiler says consumers are often the fastest to react to a food safety issue by avoiding a restaurant or tossing out products, for example. Industry typically adapts quickly to pressure, but the slowest is the government, he says. The 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act, which introduced more robust preventative controls for food producers and increased inspections, among other measurestook years to be signed into law and implemented.Advancements in food safety testing are helping identify outbreaks faster, but experts warn that these improvements wont solve underlying issues that require better support for food safety agencieswhich Kowalcyk says have been chronically underfunded. And in recent weeks, the FDAs top food safety official resigned after almost 90 probationary staff members involved in food safety were laid off following a Trump administration executive order to reduce the federal workforce, though some of the employees have since been rehired. Under the administration, the USDA also disbanded two food safety committees, one of which had been tasked with reviewing regulatory standards for Listeria monocytogenes after the 2024 outbreak in deli meats. Any more cuts will be problematic, Kowalcyk says.Personally, I predict well see fewer outbreaks and recalls, she says. If you dont look for something, you dont find it.

Limbo developer responds after co-founder feud goes public"Please stop the bullying."Image credit: Playdead News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on March 11, 2025 Playdead, the developer behind indie darlings Limbo and Inside, has responded amidst an increasingly ugly spat between the company's co-founders.Reports of a rift between Playdead's Dino Patti and Arnt Jensen are nothing new, and first circulated around the time Patti left Playdead following the launch of Inside in 2016. This month, however, the friction between the two men has become public - following a claim by Patti that he was the subject of "bullying", and that Jensen had "repeatedly" sent legal threats to him since his departure from the company. The latest of these legal claims, Patti says, involves a now-deleted LinkedIn post in which he discussed Limbo's development and shared a photo of an "unauthorised" photo taken by Jensen. Patti says he has now been asked to cough up the equivalent of 56k in compensation. In response to Patti's claim being made public, Playdead has issued a statement confirming it has "submitted demands" based on a claim of "infringement and unauthorised use of Playdead's trademarks and copyrighted works in a commercial and marketing context" (thanks, Game Developer)."We have found it necessary to take this action to protect our trademarks and copyrights," the company said, "which are essential to Playdead's business and reputation".In a legal document shared by Patti, Playdead wrote that "by providing recipients with core insights to the process of developing Limbo, you are falsely giving the impression that you played a significant role, including a creative role, in the development of the game".Sharing the document online, Patti said he was a "significant part of building Playdead from the ground up" and that without him, "Playdead wouldn't have existed". "Arnt, please stop the bullying," Patti concluded. "I will not stop being who I am. I will never erase my own history. You can't rewrite the past just because of a bad breakup." Playdead is currently working on its third game, which it began teasing in 2017. In 2020, Epic Games confirmed it would handle publishing duties on the game.Patti launched Somerville, his first game at new studio Jumpship, in 2022. An adventure platform game with physics-based puzzles, it received decent reviews, amidst comparisons to Playdead's work.

  • Monster Hunter Wilds' popularity due to emphasis on story, says series producer
    www.eurogamer.net
Monster Hunter Wilds' popularity due to emphasis on story, says series producerSeikret to success.Image credit: Capcom / Eurogamer News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on March 11, 2025 Monster Hunter Wilds has seen huge success since it launched at the end of February, which series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has put down to the emphasis on story.Speaking to The Nikkei (via Automaton), Tsujimoto discussed the launch of Capcom's latest in the hit series and what elements have contributed to its success. The producer cited the emphasis on story, the heightened immersion due to full voice acting, and the inclusion of crossplay as key elements.Monster Hunter Wilds Tips: 28 Things You NEED To Know Before You StartWatch on YouTubeCrossplay allows players across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to play together in multiplayer and hunt with friends no matter which platform they play on. Last month, Tsujimoto acknowledged the importance of the PC platform in particular: "Yeah, there are more players than ever playing on PC, including in Japan," he said, "so we definitely see room for the series to capture new players who haven't tried it before if that's their chosen platform."However, the story emphasis is curious considering this is one area of the game that has been criticised in reviews.Monster Hunter Wilds, as with previous games in the series, includes a set story that acts as training for later High Rank hunts after the credits. It's certainly more cinematic than previous entries, but it also lacks challenge."The main story campaign is essentially a 20-hour tutorial designed to gently walk players through the fundamentals, but it's so tortuously belaboured, and covers so little meaningful ground... it feels approximately 20 times longer than it needs to be," wrote Matt Wales in Eurogamer's Monster Hunter Wilds review. "It's also essentially mandatory given so many of Wilds' features - from side quests to Palico support skills, and even the game's flagship seasonal dynamism - don't unlock till the credits roll and High Rank begins. He continued: "To be clear, the story campaign isn't an entirely terrible way to spend 20 hours, thanks to sky-high production values, infectiously silly detours, and a genuinely endearing cast. But it takes the series' relatively recent infatuation with cinematic storytelling to fairly exhausting extremes - suffocating its handsomely staged fights between so much endless cutscene jib-jabber and on-rails traversal that even the most receptive of newcomers (let alone old-hands who've done this dance countless times before) will likely be screaming for Capcom to shut up and get on with it."If you are after more difficult hunts, though, Capcom has promised a "new level of challenge" in the game's first content update due next month.Monster Hunter Wilds sold over 8m copies at launch to become Capcom's fastest-selling game ever. I'm sure a large part of that success is the game's more streamlined approach compared with previous entries, not to mention the ongoing success of the series since 2018's Monster Hunter: World.

As D4 continues its push towards live-service multiplayer endgame, Blizzard is introducing the ability to instantly teleport to friends for easy matchmaking. With multiplayer-only endgame mechanics in the Dark Citadel to the newly revamped loot drops that ensure multiplayer parties get more ladder loot, its clear that Diablo 4 isnt giving up on social play anytime soon. So its about time the game got a bit better at it.Diablo 4 Patch 2.2 adds free teleportsRevealed in the patch notes for the current PTR 2.2 update, Blizzard is adding the ability to instantly teleport to party members in the ARPG. If youre out adventuring with friends and you split up, youll be able to quickly zip back to your friends with ease. The new feature will be nested in the social menu for now. In the menu, youll be able to select another member of your party and teleport to them instantaneously. Its not as smooth as previous incarnations of the multiplayer feature, but its a very useful addition to the game that really shouldve been there on launch.Instantly teleporting to individual party members was a key component of Diablo 3. However, in that game it was easier to find the option. Instead of being nested inside the social menu, players on PC could right-click the profile of their party members and then click Teleport to Player. While the new version of this feature is substantially less graceful than before, at least its here. Previously, Diablo 4 players needed to be inside a major town before they could teleport to another party member which resulted in unnecessary backtracking and fights to get to your friends. With Blizzard aiming to massively overhaul Diablo 4s difficulty, battle pass, social interactions and more, its clear that were in for a huge transformation across the coming years. • Daniel Craigs Houses: Examining the Stars Real Estate Portfolio
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Daniel Craigs houses have been seeing more of him than they did in previous years. The English actor, who played James Bond in the wildly successful film franchise from 2006 until 2021, is more selective with work since welcoming a daughter with The Mummy star Rachel Weisz in 2018. Ive got a six-year-old at home, Craig said in an interview with The New York Times in November. And I dont want to be away from home as much as I have in the past.Craig, who starred in the Rian Johnson whodunit Knives Out and most recently in Luca Guadagninos Queer, became a household name in 2006 with the release of his first Bond film, Casino Royale. When I accepted the job to work on Bond, I genuinely did it to change my life. I knew that it would flip everything on its head, Craig told Interview Magazine in 2007. I can say, hand on heart, though, that Ive never made movies for moneyIve always made them because Ive truly wanted to do them. With his lucrative stint as the iconic spy under his belt, Craig can afford to spend more time at home, whether it be in New York or London. Below, we round up the Skyfall stars real estate portfolio.Camden dwellingCraig and his then girlfriend, film producer Satsuki Mitchell, bought a 4 million British pound ($5 million) home next to Regents Park in Londons Camden neighborhood in 2008, The Telegraph reported that October. Per the outlet, the Quantum Solace star had the interior of the dwelling completely renovated before moving in. Its unclear exactly when Craig offloaded the home, but records show that Mitchell submitted an application to renovate a parking area for the home in 2010 and it last sold in 2011 for 4.05 million British pounds, so it seems likely that that was when the actor moved on.Midtown rentalAccording to the New York Post, Craig rented a sky-high unit overlooking Central Park in Manhattans Park Imperial tower in 2009. The apartment, where Craig stayed while starring alongside Hugh Jackman in the Broadway play A Steady Rain, had three bedrooms and three bathrooms. While we couldnt verify that Craig paid $38,000 a month to rent the space, as alleged by the Post, its safe to say he lived there for a time. Interior designer Jarret Yoshida decorated the apartment, per his online portfolio. Images show herringbone floors and floor-to-ceiling glass to take full advantage of the surrounding views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. Yoshia dressed the space with contemporary furnishings grouped to intentionally frame the cityscape, using the Japanese garden design concept of shakkei, or borrowed scenery.Tribeca penthouseIn June 2010, Craig and Mitchell paid about $1.8 million for a penthouse duplex in Tribeca, according to public records. The Wall Street Journal reported that the couple paid cash to win a bidding war for the one-bedroom dwelling. It boasted 20-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass, and three terraces. Its a very Bond apartment, listing agent Fredrik Eklund told the WSJ shortly before the deal closed. Craig and Mitchell were engaged at the time, but they broke up later that year. The modern abode, which records show was purchased in Mitchells name, was sold in 2015 for $2.9 million.Victorian mansion in LondonIn 2011, Craig married Weisz in a quiet ceremony attended by just four people. He moved into her 3.3 million British pound ($4.2 million) four-story London home, where they currently reside with their six-year-old daughter, Grace. The five-bedroom Victorian terrace house is located in Londons Primrose Hill neighborhood and dates back to 1840. Reportedly, the couple submitted an application for permission to heavily renovate the historic abode in 2023. Replacing a poorly constructed 20th-century conservatory, relocating the kitchen, and adding a guest bathroom were listed among the submitted renovation plans.East Village apartmentIn need of a stateside home base, Craig and Weisz picked up a $6 million New York City condo in the East Village in 2012 after an extensive house hunt. Spanning 3,200 square feet, the 15th-floor dwelling hosted three bedrooms and an equal number of baths. A private elevator to the apartment opened into a foyer that led to a warehouse-esque 1,000-square-foot great room with an open floor plan, white painted floors, and exposed cement ceilings. Rows of picture windows throughout the apartment showed off the surrounding cityscape. A separate eat-in kitchen was lined with sleek stainless steel appliances and access to the largest of the pads three balconies, while the primary suite hosted a pair of spacious walk-in closets and an en suite bathroom lined with black marble and wood paneling, complete with a luxe-looking shower and a soaking tub.The couple broke even when they sold the sprawling unit in 2019 for $6 million.Brooklyn brownstoneThe Glass Onion star kicked off 2018 with the purchase of a $6.75 million brownstone in Brooklyns Cobble Hill. The 1901-built house spans five stories and 6,600 square feet, making it one of the neighborhoods largest homes, per listing details. With six bedrooms and five and a half baths, the couple have plenty of room to spread out. A fire damaged the structure in 2016, when it was under the ownership of novelist Martin Amis and his wife, Isabel Fonseca. As a result, it was stripped down to a clean, blank slate after extensive repair, so Craig and Weisz had free reign to customize it to their liking. An elevator, a roof deck, and a backyard garden and patio round out the amenities of the home.Upstate getawayIf Craig and Weisz are in need of an escape from the city, they can head to their Ulster County, New York, estate, which Weisz bought in 2008 for about $2.1 million. The 124-acre plot hosts a Colonial stone house that dates back to 1785. Per listing details, the abode has four bedrooms and three bathrooms across about 2,500 square feet. Highlights include a double-height kitchen equipped with a fireplace, a library, and tons of original details. A Dutch barn and a pond are also found on the property.
