  • The Real Reason Twitter Actually Went Down Sounds Pretty Embarrassing
    futurism.com
During a Fox News interview earlier this week, multi-hypenate billionaire and X-formerly-Twitter owner Elon Musk blamed a "massive cyberattack" that repeatedly took down the site yesterday as coming from Ukraine. But, as Wired reports, his evidence is flimsy at best. Musk claimed that "IP addresses" behind the attack originated in the embattled European nation. But as experts told the publication, that's far from actual proof."What we can conclude from the IP data is the geographic distribution of traffic sources, which may provide insights into botnet composition or infrastructure used," connectivity firm Zayo chief security officer Shawn Edwards told Wired. "What we cant conclude with certainty is the actual perpetrators identity or intent."One researcher claimed in an interview with Wired that Ukraine wasn't even in the top 20 IP addresses involved in the attack.Since then, a pro-Palestine hacking group called Dark Storm Team claimed responsibility for the attacks in now-deleted Telegram posts. And considering some glaring technical oversights, the hackers seem to have had a surprisingly easy time taking down the social media platform. Security researchers told Wired that several X origin servers, which are designated to respond to web requests, weren't secured by the company's Cloudflare protection.Cloudflare offers services allowing websites to automatically detect and mitigate distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, like the most recent cyberattack targeting X."The botnet was directly attacking the IP and a bunch more on that X subnet yesterday," independent security researcher Kevin Beaumont told Wired. "It's a botnet of cameras and DVRs."Put simply, X was ill-prepared, despite DDoS attacks being an extremely common threat to virtually all services on the internet. The company's loose protections may have even allowed the incident to be far worse than it would've been otherwise. It'd be far from the first time X has been thrown into chaos due to questionable decision-making and a bevy of bugs.Whether state actors were indeed behind the attack, as Musk strongly suggests, remains dubious at best. Experts suggest it's unlikely, considering the crudeness of the attack."There are kind of two types of cyber attacks there are ones that are designed to be very loud and there are ones that are designed to be very quiet," cyber operations Nicholas Reese told the Associated Press. "And the ones that are usually the most valuable are the ones that are very quiet.""Something like this was designed to be discovered," he added. "So to me that almost certainly eliminates state actors. And the value that they would have gained from it is pretty low."Musk has certainly made plenty of enemies with his embracing of extreme-right ideologies and plundering of the US government. The dealerships of his car company Tesla have been targeted with protests and vandalism across the country, indicating a massive flare-up in anti-Musk sentiment. In other words, a DDoS attack against Musk's social media mouthpiece isn't exactly surprising, regardless of who was behind it.Share This Article

  • Facebook Employees Would Lose Board Games Against Zuckerberg on Purpose, Former Executive Claims
    futurism.com
In a new tell-all book, a former senior Facebook employee claims, among other things, that employees used to let founder Mark Zuckerberg win at Settlers of Catan. As former Facebook executive Sarah Wynn-Williams toldNBC News ahead of the release of her new memoir, titled "Careless People," Zuckerberg insisted that his underlings weren't losing on purpose."You dont want to win that way?" Wynn-Williams, a former diplomat from New Zealand who worked as Facebook's director of global public policy from 2011 until 2017, recalled asking the CEO and founder."I'm not winning that way," he insisted. That insight into what makes Zuck tick, alongside other telling details including his belief that Andrew Jackson, the architect of the genocidal "Trail of Tears," was the best American president paint the portrait of an out-of-touch tech founder who oversaw a toxic work culture that ultimately led to Wynn-Williams' departure. The thrust of the book reportedly centers around the sexual harassment she suffered at the hands of Joel Kaplan, who was at the time Facebook's vice president for global public policy and Wynn-Williams' boss. In an email exchange about her US citizenship test viewed by NBC, Kaplan asked the NZ native if she would be quizzed on the racist and sexually-charged term "dirty sanchez." In another instance, the executive asked Wynn-Williams after she'd given birth "where are you bleeding from?" and later told her she looked "sultry" at a work event.Ultimately, Wynn-Williams was fired in 2017 after filing a workplace harassment claim against Kaplan that she believes was unfairly turned against her. In her interview withNBC, the ex-Facebook executive said she thinks her termination was retaliatory, though Meta insisted when reached by the outlet for comment that she was let go for "poor performance and toxic behavior."Along with accusing her direct supervisor of harassment, Wynn-Williams also said in her interview that she was uncomfortable with interactions she had with former chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg when the two were working together. In 2016, the ex-employee alleges, the "Lean In" author repeatedly asked Wynn-Williams to share a bed with her on a flight from Davos, Switzerland back to California. After refusing, Sandberg reportedly told Wynn-Williams that she "should have got into bed," and later seemed to marginalize her at work.On another unsettling occasion, which Wynn-Williams also detailed in a whistleblower complaint she filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Sandberg allegedly instructed another employee to spend $13,000 on lingerie for the COO and staffer. This demand came over email, whichNBC reviewed. Through her family foundation, Sandberg declined to comment on the claims.Though Meta is insisting the former exec's book is a "mix of out-of-date and previously reported claims about the company and false accusations about our executives," it also attempted to persuade a judge to hold an emergency hearing ahead of the book's publication this week as the company sought to halt its publication and make its own edits. In a statement, Flatiron Books, Wynn-Williams publisher, said that Meta was trying to "institute a gag order to silence our author" and that it hasno responsibilityThis behind-the-scenes look at Facebook's inner workings are especially fascinating now that the company is essentially operating without content moderation and looking to get into bed with President Donald Trump while doing so.Share This Article

  • Blind Eagle Hacks Colombian Institutions Using NTLM Flaw, RATs and GitHub-Based Attacks
    thehackernews.com
Mar 11, 2025Ravie LakshmananMalware / VulnerabilityThe threat actor known as Blind Eagle has been linked to a series of ongoing campaigns targeting Colombian institutions and government entities since November 2024."The monitored campaigns targeted Colombian judicial institutions and other government or private organizations, with high infection rates," Check Point said in a new analysis."More than 1,600 victims were affected during one of these campaigns which took place around December 19, 2024. This infection rate is significant considering Blind Eagle's targeted APT approach."Blind Eagle, active since at least 2018, is also tracked as AguilaCiega, APT-C-36, and APT-Q-98. It's known for its hyper-specific targeting of entities in South America, specifically Colombia and Ecuador.Attack chains orchestrated by the threat actor entail the use of social engineering tactics, often in the form of spear-phishing emails, to gain initial access to target systems and ultimately drop readily available remote access trojans like AsyncRAT, NjRAT, Quasar RAT, and Remcos RAT.The latest set of intrusions are notable for three reasons: The use of a variant of an exploit for a now-patched Microsoft Windows flaw (CVE-2024-43451), the adoption of a nascent packer-as-a-service (PaaS) called HeartCrypt, and the distribution of payloads via Bitbucket and GitHub, going beyond Google Drive and Dropbox.Specifically, HeartCrypt is used to protect the malicious executable, a variant of PureCrypter that's then responsible for launching the Remcos RAT malware hosted on a now-removed Bitbucket or GitHub repository.CVE-2024-43451 refers to an NTLMv2 hash disclosure vulnerability that was fixed by Microsoft in November 2024. Blind Eagle, per Check Point, incorporated a variant of this exploit into its attack arsenal a mere six days after the release of the patch, causing unsuspecting victims to advance the infection when a malicious .URL distributed via a phishing email is manually clicked."While this variant does not actually expose the NTLMv2 hash, it notifies the threat actors that the file was downloaded by the same unusual user-file interactions," the cybersecurity company said."On devices vulnerable to CVE-2024-43451, a WebDAV request is triggered even before the user manually interacts with the file with the same unusual behavior. Meanwhile, on both patched and unpatched systems, manually clicking the malicious .URL file initiates the download and execution of the next-stage payload."Check Point pointed out that the "rapid response" serves to highlight the group's technical expertise and its ability to adapt and pursue new attack methods in the face of evolving security defenses.Serving as a smoking gun for the threat actor's origins is the GitHub repository, which has revealed that the threat actor operates in the UTC-5 timezone, aligning with several South American countries. That's not all. In what appears to be an operational error, an analysis of the repository commit history has uncovered a file containing account-password pairs with 1,634 unique email addresses. While the HTML file, named "Ver Datos del Formulario.html," was deleted from the repository on February 25, 2025, it has been found to contain details such as usernames, passwords, email, email passwords, and ATM PINs associated with individuals, government agencies, educational institutions, and businesses operating in Colombia."A key factor in its success is its ability to exploit legitimate file-sharing platforms, including Google Drive, Dropbox, Bitbucket, and GitHub, allowing it to bypass traditional security measures and distribute malware stealthily," Check Point said."Additionally, its use of underground crimeware tools such as Remcos RAT, HeartCrypt, and PureCrypter reinforces its deep ties to the cybercriminal ecosystem, granting access to sophisticated evasion techniques and persistent access methods."Found this article interesting? First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location. All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommendBrave.

  • NASA Begins Mass Firings ahead of Trump Teams Deadline

March 11, 20253 min readNASA Begins Mass Firings ahead of Trump Teams DeadlineTop advisers in NASAs Office of the Chief Scientist are among the first to go amid a government-wide downsizing effortBy Alexandra Witze & Nature magazine A large, bright red NASA logo in front of the Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters building stands out on an overcast day in the nations capital. John M. Chase/Getty ImagesNASA has abruptly closed its chief-scientist office, along with 2 other offices, firing 23 employees. The 10 March action leaves the agency without a way of feeding independent science advice to its topmost leadership, at a time when it is talking about sending astronauts to the Moon and developing plans to go onwards to Mars.Janet Petro, the acting NASA administrator, said in an agency-wide e-mail that were viewing this as an opportunity to reshape our workforce. The lay-offs come days before all US federal agencies are required to submit a plan for how they would eliminate employees, as part of a radical downsizing of the federal government led by US President Donald Trump and his adviser Elon Musk in the name of improving efficiency. These are NASAs first firings since Trump took office, and they have taken a different pattern to those at other federal agencies in the past few weeks. NASA was spared, for unknown reasons, from the extensive lay-offs of probationary employees those with little job protection because they have been in their positions for less than two years seen at other agencies. The move makes NASA the first agency under the current Trump administration to pre-emptively fire career employees, beginning the required reductions in force (RIFs) sooner than many observers had anticipated. It remains unclear whether other agencies might follow NASAs lead.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. The cutting of the last of these is a direct result of Trumps 20 January executive order to slash diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across the federal government. But the reason for the closure of the other two offices is not as obvious.Thinking about the futureBoth offices advise NASAs chief, or administrator, on scientific and technical matters. Petro is filling this position until Trumps nominee, billionaire and private astronaut Jared Isaacman a friend of Musk is confirmed by the US Senate. The two offices are unique in that they offer ways of connecting strategy across NASAs departments and divisions. With their closure, you will lose strategic thinking, said a NASA staff member who is familiar with the structure of the offices but did not want to be named for fear of retaliation. For instance, the Office of the Chief Scientist was involved in NASAs open-science initiative to publicly share data and algorithms, and hosted discussions on reproducibility and scientific ethics, among other topics. This was where people thought about the future of NASA, the staff member said. The office also produces internal reports requested by the NASA administrator, including a recent analysis on the possible impacts of involving industry partners in plans to bring rock samples from Mars. The Office of the Chief Scientist is independent from NASAs Science Mission Directorate, which oversees the agencys US$7-billion science budget and runs missions including the Hubble Space Telescope and the various Mars rovers. The position of NASA chief scientist, which oversees the office, is held by climate scientist Kate Calvin. With the office eliminated, Calvin is expected to return to the US Department of Energy, from which she had been temporarily loaned to NASA.The Office of Technology, Policy and Strategy studied broad space issues for NASA, including orbital debris, the relationship between the agency and private aerospace partners and artificial intelligence in space. The firings came without warning on Monday morning, a person who lost their job told Nature. They were particularly shocked that career employees were being terminated ahead of the RIF-plan deadline. Its being done in an odd way before the agency even has to let anybody go, they said. Prior to everything happening today, NASA has been an incredible place to work to dream big, to innovate, to do things that I never thought I could have done. This article is reproduced with permission and was first published on March 11, 2025.
