  • Snapchat introduces AI-generated Lenses for premium subscribers
    9to5mac.com
Snapchat on Wednesday announced a new feature for its users at least for some of them. Starting today, Snapchat Platinum (the platforms premium subscription) members will have access to new AI-generated Lenses.Snapchat gets new AI LensesFor those unfamiliar, Snapchat Lenses are essentially AR filters available in the app, so that users can take photos and videos with these live AR effects. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the Lenses will now look even more realistic. Snapchat says its using an in-house built generative video model to power the new AI Video Lenses.Users will find three AI Video Lenses for now. Two of them, Raccoon and Fox, will animate furry friends by making them interact with the person. The other new AI filter called Spring Flowers generates a zoom-out effect as if the person is holding a bouquet of flowers.Snapchat Platinum subscribers can find the new Lenses in the carousel along with the other AR filters. Since generating videos with AI takes a while, users can continue browsing the app while the video is being processed. The company says that more AI Video Lenses will be added in the future.Coincidentally or not, Instagram announced in December that it has also been working on realistic AI-based filters, which will replace the current AR filters. However, Instagram is yet to release these AI filters to users.Snapchat is available for free on the App Store. It requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 or later.Gadgets I recommendAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • One of Tesla's Biggest Supporters Is Running Out of Patience
    futurism.com
Wall Street is getting increasingly frustrated with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has seemingly abandoned the carmaker in favor of spending most of his time gutting the federal government with the help of his so-called Department of Government Efficiency.Even one of the brand's most prominent bulls, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, is running out of patience."Musk needs to step up as Tesla CEO at this critical juncture," Ives wrote in a note. "In a nutshell, the word 'balance' has been missing with Elon Musk and his ability to run Tesla as CEO... while instead focusing all of his energy and time driving his DOGE initiative within the Trump Administration.""There has been little to no sign of Musk at any Tesla factory or manufacturing facility the last two months and perception has become reality for Tesla shares," he wrote. It's a notable change in tune for one of the carmaker's biggest backers, highlighting the precariousness of the situation. Tesla sales have been driven off a cliff worldwide, in large part due to Musk's abrasive behavior and endorsement of far-right ideologies, which have cast a looming shadow on the brand and triggered waves of protests and vandalism at showrooms. The carmaker's shares tanked on Monday, dropping over 15 percent in less than a day. A highly unusual event put on by president Donald Trump outside of the White House has seemingly breathed some new life into the embattled company, sending its shares up over seven percent on Wednesday.Yet the overall prognosis is grim, and Tesla stocks are still down almost 35 percent year to date. Analysts are anxiously awaiting the company's Q1 sales numbers, to be released next month and many of them are expecting the worst. JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman predicts a massive 51 percent drop from Tesla's current valuation.Even Ives, who has long remained bullish on Tesla's performance, warned in his note that investor patience is wearing "thin" and that Musk is "not reading the room."According to Ives, Tesla is facing a "moment of truth."Meanwhile, Musk has doubled down on his newfound job in the White House. During a Fox Business interview, Muskappeared to be on the verge of tears after being asked about "giving up" his "other stuff.""With great difficulty," the mercurial CEO admitted after being asked how he's running his other businesses. But according to Ives, Musk doubling down on gutting the government and leading mass layoffs in Washington, DC, could imperil the future of Tesla."Becoming a political object is a dangerous path," he told Fortune."As someone whos covered Tesla for many, many years, it was time to communicate to Musk and the board what Tesla shareholders are telling us: Balance your time," he added. "Show that you are Tesla CEO.""This is not the time to just play in the DOGE sandbox," Ives argued. "He needs to step up."Despite the analyst's dire warnings, Ives maintained that Tesla shares will be worth $550 in a year, more than $100 above the company's all-time high set during last year's presidential election.Whether that'll ultimately be the outcome remains to be seen. Musk has promised that the carmaker will roll out "autonomous ride-hailing for money" by June in Austin, Texas, a characteristically ambitious timeline. And the risks are considerable, especially considering the unfinished state of its driver assistance software, which has been linked to hundreds of crashes and dozens of deaths by regulators. Will 2025 really be the year when Tesla will finally be able to deliver on a promise Musk has made every year for the past decade?Investors will certainly be keeping close tabs on the company's progress. After all, with car sales in freefall, Tesla may eventually be forced to reinvent itself to keep them happy.Share This Article

Its location across from Italy, with the Albanian Alps to the north, has long influenced both the built environment and cultural contacts.People battled against regime-era structures and public areas after the totalitarian system fell in 1992, causing a rift with the past.Edi Rama, Tiranas mayor from 2000 to 2011 and now Prime Minister, described this re-appropriation as a reclaiming of individualism: "It was a space to be regained by people deprived of private property and self-expression. Returning to individualism was very traumatic."Composed image in association with: 51N4E, Skanderbeg Square (2008-2019), Tirana; Kengo Kuma & Associates, Butrint National Park (2023-ongoing); Oppenheim Architecture, Hotel Jali, Himar (2020-ongoing)Three decades later, Albania remains in transitionculturally, socially, and architecturally. This ongoing renewal has placed architecture at the center of national discourse. In Albania, the architect's function has deviated from international standards. However, this freedom also entails a significant obligation to the environment. The rivers and mountains are living systems that require integration rather than dominance; they are not just resources. Development and tourism in Albania must take sustainability into account as the country's pristine coastlines garner more and more attention from across the world. Architects in Albania must strike a balance between their creative freedom and a dedication to the common good, in contrast to many other places where they work within strict restrictions. In Albania, where new development models are still being developed, this advocacy role is essential. Architects have a rare chance to determine how architecture engages with the nation's changing character without being constrained by international standards. Their work goes beyond design; they must balance conflicting interests and bring long-term perspective to an industry that is frequently motivated by immediate profits.A new book on Albanian architecture will be released in October 2025, marking the culmination of a public initiative. The Albanian Files, compiled by Anneke Abhelakh and published by Lars Mller Publishers with graphic design by Linda van Deursen, provides an enormous collection of architectural works produced in Albania from the early 2000s onward. The book examines how architecture has emerged as a defining factor in the country's self-reimagining, providing an unparalleled overview of both finished and upcoming projects. The editor interviewed more than fifty architects for the book, exploring their experiences and reasons for working in Albania. Additionally, a film essay commissioned for the Albanian Pavilion at La Biennale Venezia di Architettura is based on these Zoom-based discussions. The movie looks at the agency of architects, how public and private space are changing, how architecture and politics are intertwined, and how architecture is influencing Albania's developing identity. It also looks at how architects move through and evolve their professions in this ever-changing environment. The Albanian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, titled: Building Architecture Culture, emphasizes the mutually reinforcing relationship between architecture and society. Beyond practice, the field is present in academics and the general public, where concepts related to space are discussed, exchanged, and considered.Ideally, this third sphere acts as the profession's conscience. This area is temporarily represented by the Albanian pavilion and its public program, which discusses and displays Albania's changing architectural identity. • Controversial Quantum Advantage Claim Made by Computing Firm D-Wave
    www.scientificamerican.com
March 11, 20253 min readControversial Quantum Advantage Claim Made by Computing Firm D-WaveThe company says it has solved the first problem of scientific relevance with a quantum processor faster than could be done with classical computersbut others disagreeBy Davide Castelvecchi & Nature magazine D-Waves Advantage2 quantum processor. D-Wave Quantum Inc.A quantum processor has solved a physics problem on the behaviour of magnetism in certain solids that would take hundreds of thousands of years to calculate on the largest conventional supercomputers. The result is the latest claim of machine showing quantum advantage over classical computers.Although Google and others have claimed to achieve quantum advantage most lately with the Sycamore chip that Google unveiled in December researchers at D-Wave, a company in Burnaby, Canada, say that their result, published in Science, is the first that solves an actual physics question. We believe its the first time anyone has done it on a problem of scientific interest, says D-Wave physicist Andrew King. The D-Wave team did great work but classical computing should not be counted out quite yet, says Miles Stoudenmire, a researcher at the Flatiron Institute Center for Computational Quantum Physics in New York City. We're still in the race.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. The result also validates the approach the company has taken to quantum computing, King says. Rather than building a universal quantum computer one that could run any quantum algorithm D-Wave has focused on an approach that was limited to performing certain calculations, but easier to scale. An early pioneer in the quantum field, D-Wave machines have long led the industry in terms of number of qubits, the quantum equivalent of classical bits of information. The latest processor has thousands of qubits. These are results of 25 years of hardware development and research at D-Wave, says Mohammad Amin, another senior physicist at the company.Magnetic problemThe problem solved by D-Wave concerns the theory of magnetism, a large field of theoretical physics. The electron spins of each atom act like magnetic needles, and the way they orient themselves inside a solid in response to their neighbours orientations has long provided a prototype for the study of complex systems. In a typical permanent magnet, the spins all align in the same direction. But in general materials, neighbouring spins give conflicting influences on each other, and stable arrangements either dont exist or are extremely difficult to predict. Quantum effects add complications.King, Amin and their collaborators at D-Wave and at several academic labs used the latest D-Wave machine, called Advantage2, to simulate the arrangements of spins in several 3D crystal structures. They studied a specific problem in which the temperature of the material starts at absolute zero, and quantum fluctuations let it transition from one state to another. They estimate that their machine achieved the result exponentially faster than any classical calculation.Advantage claims challengedThe result follows several claims of quantum advantage. Google made the first claim of a quantum advantage in a paper that caused a sensation in 2019. It used a fully programmable, or universal, quantum computer with superconducting qubits to perform a calculation that was designed to test for quantum advantage but had no practical application. Soon, IBM and other companies showed that by improving classical techniques, they could still run the same calculations on ordinary computers.IBM then achieved a quantum advantage on a useful application in 2023. But that claim suffered a similar fate to Googles last year when computational physicist Miles Stoudenmire, at the Flatiron Institute Center for Computational Quantum Physics in New York City, and his collaborators showed their classical algorithms could solve the problem as quickly.Last week, in response to a preprint version of the D-Wave paper, Stoudenmire posted a result on the arXiv in which his team improved on classical algorithms to do some of the same calculations as the D-Wave machine. Its an excellent piece of research, and a great scientific breakthrough as well, says Juan Carrasquilla, a computational physicist at ETH Zurich and a co-author of the D-Wave paper. (A separate team also posted a challenge to some of D-Waves claims just this week.) Still, the D-Wave stood well in front of the spoofing from conventional computers, he says. What they did, is a subset of what we did, says King. They advanced the classical state of the art, but not as far as our results.Stoudenmire's team is improving its techniques to cover all of the D-Wave simulations. Were trying now, he says. We believe it will work. More generally, Stoudenmire says, it is often not appreciated how quickly classical computing techniques are improving. This article is reproduced with permission and was first published on March 12, 2025.

This comforterBuffys bestselleris ideal for warm weather or for anyone whos a hot sleeper in general, and it comes highly recommended by two of our editors. Commerce director Rachel Fletcher loves its look and weight. The fibers are naturally a little heavier, which makes it more substantial and warmer than other cooling comforters Ive tried [like the Casper], but its not as overwhelming as a traditional down comforter, she says in her review. Like the original Buffy Comforter, it has loops in every corner, so it can be used interchangeably as a comforter or duvet insert. Our associate director Lori Keong also sleeps under the Breeze in the cooler months and notes that the wavy design on this eucalyptus-filled topper, inspired by Maya Lins Storm King Wavefields, looks especially aesthetically pleasing if you opt to use it without a cover.Best Splurge: Boll & Branch Down Duvet InsertBoll & Branch Down Duvet InsertSpecsSizes available: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, and king/California kingFill Content: Triple-washed, cruelty-free, IDS-certified down fillComforter Cover: Down-proof cotton shellCare instructionsCold water on gentle cycle, tumble dry low. Hes been burned before by synthetic down alternative comforters marketed toward hot sleepers because while they are initially cool to the touch, they arent as breathable and cling to your body more. Thats why he chose this down duvet insert from Pottery Barn, saying, I wanted maximum loftiness, so I went with 700 fill power and the all-weather weight. This is Pottery Barns most luxe bedding option, with a 400 thread count cotton damask striped shell, and 700-fill power European white goose down. Former ADIY editor Yelena Alpert tested this down alternative comforter with the stipulation that it keeps her warm throughout the nightshe admits to sleeping under several layers. On the search for a duvet insert that is lightweight but also does the job of keeping me warm (or at least helps me layer without the bulk), she turned to Sijo, known for making some of the best cooling and lightweight products that are also hypoallergenic. The eucalyptus fiber is sleek and durable without feeling as fancy as silk. This duvet is 100% Tencel lyocell, and according to Alpert, You can see and feel the quality, especially when you take a closer look at the stitching. This style comes with corner straps and a mini loop in the center so you can secure a duvet cover in the center without slippage. Long story short: This is a superb choice for a lightweight comforter and Alperts favorite by far. She adds, Its my go-to duvet insert for those in-between months of spring and early fall, when the weather is just chilly enough to want something cozy. What to Look for in a Quality ComforterFill Power: Fill power measures the fluffiness and insulation of the comforter. The higher the fill power, the fluffier and warmer it will feel.Corner Loops: If there are corner loops or anchor loops, that means you can use the comforter as a duvet insert. If there are no loops, the comforter can be prone to clumping and bunching within the duvet.Fill Content: Fill content is usually classified as either down or down alternative options. Down refers to filling thats made with duck down or goose feathers, and a down alternative is a man-made material including cotton and polyester fills, recycled materials, and plant-based fibers.Outer Shell: The material on the outer shell of your comforter or duvet insert matters. Look at the thread count. Consider your preferred sleeping temperature and whether a cotton sateen shell thats smooth but slightly thicker is a better option than one made of crisp percale cotton. If youre a hot sleeper, youll probably want a cooling material with breathability, like eucalyptus or Tencel lyocell.Size and Color: The size of your cover is dictated by the size of your bed. Companies usually offer all standard sizes from twin to king, with some brands offering California king as well. In terms of color, white is most popular for the duvet insert but you can also find ivory relatively easily. Comforter color ranges are more expansive and you can likely find a hue that fits your decor. Weve called out whats available in each of our picks.Craving better sleep?
