  • NASA's 'Stranded' Astronauts Are About to Come Home to Earth
    www.cnet.com
NASA astronauts Sunita "Suni" Williams and Barry "Butch" Wilmore have been on the International Space Station for more than eight months, even though they initially expected to stay for just about eight days. But it's finally time to come home. A relief crew for the ISS is expected to launch from Florida's Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday night, and Williams and Wilmore should be on their way home as early as March 16.The new crew heading to the ISS consists of NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Takuya Onishi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov.Once they arrive, there will be a two-day handover period, and then Williams, Wilmore, NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov will be on their way back to Earth. On March 7, Williamsturned over command of the ISS to Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, as she prepares to return home.'We're not stuck'Williams told PBS NewsHour recently that they don't feel abandoned by NASA."Obviously, there's a lot of discussion about it, so maybe people could conceive that that's the way we are, but we're not stuck," she said. "We're part of a bigger process, right?"When asked about the practicalities of suddenly being in space much longer than anticipated, without extra supplies, Wilmore said that it wasn't a problem."We did launch with fewer clothing, if you will, and that was intentional," he said. "We brought up some extra gear that needed the space station needed. We brought it up with us. So we took some of our clothes off. We were only going to be here a week or so."But we made do. It was no big deal, honestly. The space station program plans for multiple contingencies. We stockpile food to last four months beyond what is expected, at a minimum. Some most times, it's longer than that, food and other amenities, wet wipes, everything that you need up here."Wilmore told PBS that he's able to talk to his family from space, noting that he not only talks to his two daughter's but to the boyfriend of his youngest daughter."As a dad to daughters, that's my responsibilities," he said.Read more: NASA's First Interactive Twitch Stream Shows How Much Astronauts Love CoffeeRecord spacewalkBecause their stay was extended, Williams set a record. She went on a 5-hour, 26-minute spacewalk with Wilmore, and with that walk, surpassed the record set by a woman for time spent on spacewalks. According to Space.com, Williams now has 62 hours and 6 minutes of spacewalking, surpassing former astronaut Peggy Whitson, who had 60 hours and 21 minutes. On this most recent spacewalk, the two worked to finally remove a faulty radio-communications unit, one that astronauts on two previous spacewalks were unable to remove.Williams previously teamed up with astronaut Nick Hague for a spacewalk onJan. 16. On that spacewalk, Williams and Hague replaced a rate gyro assembly that helps maintain the orientation of the orbital outpost, NASA said. The astronauts also installed patches to cover damaged areas of light filters on the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer X-ray telescope, replaced a reflector device on one of the international docking adapters, and checked access areas and connector tools that astronauts will use for future Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer maintenance. NASA astronaut Suni Williams is seen outside the International Space Station during the Jan. 16, 2025, spacewalk. NASAWho are the astronauts?Wilmore, 61, and Williams, 58, are veteran astronauts and are both naval officers and former test pilots. Williams has been a NASA astronaut since 1998, and Wilmore since 2000. Both have plenty of experience in space.Williams is the former record holder for most spacewalks by a woman (seven) and most spacewalk time for a woman (50 hours, 40 minutes), and in 2007, she ran the first marathon by any person in space. In 2009, Wilmore piloted the Space Shuttle Atlantis on its mission to the ISS, and in 2014, he was part of the ISS crew that used a 3D printer to manufacture a tool -- a ratchet wrench -- in space, the first time humans manufactured something off-world.What was their original mission in space?Wilmore, as commander, and Williams, as pilot, traveled to the ISS on a 15-foot-wide, Boeing-made capsule called Starliner. They launched on June 5 and docked with the ISS on June 6. NASA hopes Starliner will give the organization a new way to get crews to and from the ISS, and the fact that it's Boeing-made is another sign that NASA is starting to lean on the private sector for its human spaceflight options, The New York Timesreported.Wilmore and Williams' ISS mission was supposed to last a mere eight days, during which they'd test out aspects of Starliner and see how it operates with a human crew in space. But due to complications with Starliner, the two astronauts are still up there. Wilmore and Williams responding to media questions back in March. Houston Chronicle/Hearst Newspapers/Getty ImagesHow did they get stuck in space in the first place? The Starliner was delayed in May due to a problem with a valve in the rocket. Then engineers had to fix a helium leak. That's all bad news for Boeing. It's competing with SpaceX, which has been transporting astronauts to the ISS since 2020, making over 20 successful trips to the space station. On June 5, Starliner finally launched atop an Atlas V rocket, but some problems came along with the launch. NASA announced that three helium leaks were identified, one of which was known before flight, and two new ones. In addition to the leaks, the crew had to troubleshoot failed control thrusters, though the craft was able to successfully dock with the ISS. SpaceX has had failures too. A Falcon 9 rocket exploded on the launchpad in 2016. In July of this year, a Falcon 9 rocket experienced a liquid oxygen leak and deployed its satellites in the wrong orbit, The New York Times reported. Additionally, a Falcon 9 rocket in late August lost a first-stage booster when it toppled over into the Atlantic Ocean and caught fire. But that said, SpaceX has more than 300 successful Falcon 9 flights to its credit.Stuck in space: A timelineMay: Starliner launch delayed due to a problem with a valve in the rocket, and then a helium leak.June 5: Starliner launches with Williams and Wilmore on board.June 6: Starliner docks with ISS despite dealing with three helium leaks and failed control thrusters.Sept. 6: Starliner departs ISS and lands in New Mexico, leaving Williams and Wilmore behind.Sept. 28: SpaceX Crew-9 mission launches with Hague and Gorbunov on a Dragon spacecraft.Sept. 29: SpaceX Dragon docks with ISS.Dec. 17: NASA announces the launch of four crew members to the ISS will be delayed from February to late March.March 12: The new crew, NASA astronauts, Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Takuya Onishi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, is expected to launch to the ISS.Approximately March 16: SpaceX Dragon spacecraft will return to Earth with Williams, Wilmore, Hague and Gorbunov.

  • Donald Trump Bought a $90,000 Tesla With 37 Recall Notices Against It
    www.wired.com
Likely referring to the significant negative coverage of Musk's efforts leading the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the president committed to buying a Tesla via TruthSocial on Tuesday morning, stating that Musk was putting it on the line in order to help our Nation, and he is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! I'm going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk.Turning to the Cybertruck at the White House Tesla walk-around, the president proclaimed that the 3.3-ton EV was the coolest design. But considering how the truck is apparently prone to rust, and the fact that its multiple recalls have ranked it worse than 91 percent of all 2024 vehicles, it is perhaps wise that President Trump opted for the Model S.That said, the president's choice has sadly had more than its fair share of problems. The Model S has had 37 NHTSA safety recalls so far over the course of its existence, most recently in January for an issue where certain models of the tech-laden S's computer circuit board may short, resulting in the loss of the rearview camera image, increasing the risk of a crash.A red model S.TeslaOther Model S recalls have included issues with airbags, potential problems with the power-steering assist feature, faulty door handles, warped brake discs, and in 2023 a voluntary recall for every one of Tesla's vehicles using the Full Self-Driving feature. According to NHTSAsfiling at the time, the issues included not properly stopping at a stop sign; speeding, due to failing to detect a road sign or because the driver has set their car to default to a faster speed; and making unexpected lane changes to move out of turn-only lanes when going straight through an intersection. It should be noted, however, that due to the increasing complexity of the cars being made today, automotive recalls for numerous brands have surged in recent years, including Mercedes, General Motors, BMW, Chrysler, and Ford.Musk will be hoping that such a thumping presidential endorsement will reverse a worrying recent sales decline for the auto brand. According to Kelley Blue Book, Tesla sold 43,650 EVs in February, a decrease of nearly 6 percent from the 46,262 sold in the same month last year. Globally, sales drops are much worse, with falls of more than 75 percent in Europe and 65 percent in Australia for the first two months of the year. The UK is one of the few markets bucking this trend, with Tesla's February sales up 20 percent compared with the same month last year. For some customers already part of the Tesla collective, the shame of being associated with a brand's CEO who has made Nazi-like salutes and endorsedthe far-rightpolitical party Alternative for Germany is proving too much, and they are rebadging their EVs with rival marque insignias.

  • In Memoriam: Mark Klein, AT&T Whistleblower Who Revealed NSA Mass Spying
    www.eff.org
EFF is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mark Klein, a bona fide hero who risked civil liability and criminal prosecution to help expose a massive spying program that violated the rights of millions of Americans.Mark didnt set out to change the world. For 22 years, he was a telecommunications technician for AT&T, most of that in San Francisco. But he always had a strong sense of right and wrong and a commitment to privacy.Mark not only saw how it works, he had the documents to prove it.When the New York Times reported in late 2005 that the NSA was engaging in spying inside the U.S., Mark realized that he had witnessed how it was happening. He also realized that the President was not telling Americans the truth about the program. And, though newly retired, he knew that he had to do something. He showed up at EFFs front door in early 2006 with a simple question: Do you folks care about privacy? We did. And what Mark told us changed everything. Through his work, Mark had learned that the National Security Agency (NSA) had installed a secret, secure room at AT&Ts central office in San Francisco, called Room 641A. Mark was assigned to connect circuits carrying Internet data to optical splitters that sat just outside of the secret NSA room but were hardwired into it. Those splittersas well as similar ones in cities around the U.S.made a copy of all data going through those circuits and delivered it into the secret room.Mark not only saw how it works, he had the documents to prove it. He brought us over a hundred pages of authenticated AT&T schematic diagrams and tables. Mark also shared this information with major media outlets, numerous Congressional staffers, and at least two senators personally. One, Senator Chris Dodd, took the floor of the Senate to acknowledge Mark as the great American hero he was.We used Marks evidence to bring two lawsuits against the NSA spying that he uncovered. The first was Hepting v. AT&T and the second was Jewel v. NSA. Mark also came with us to Washington D.C. to push for an end to the spying and demand accountability for it happening in secret for so many years. He wrote an account of his experience called Wiring Up the Big Brother Machine . . . And Fighting It.Mark stood up and told the truth at great personal risk to himself and his family. AT&T threatened to sue him, although it wisely decided not to do so. While we were able to use his evidence to make some change, both EFF and Mark were ultimately let down by Congress and the Courts, which have refused to take the steps necessary to end the mass spying even after Edward Snowden provided even more evidence of it in 2013.But Mark certainly inspired all of us at EFF, and he helped inspire and inform hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans to demand an end to illegal mass surveillance. While we have not yet seen the success in ending the spying that we all have hoped for, his bravery helped to usher numerous reforms so far.And the fight is not over. The law, called 702, that now authorizes the continued surveillance that Mark first revealed, expires in early 2026. EFF and others will continue to push for continued reforms and, ultimately, for the illegal spying to end entirely.Marks legacy lives on in our continuing fights to reform surveillance and honor the Fourth Amendments promise of protecting personal privacy. We are forever grateful to him for having the courage to stand up and will do our best to honor that legacy by continuing the fight.

  • Hello Kitty Island Adventure Sales Surpass Half A Million In 30 Days
    www.nintendolife.com
@CRB1984 the mobile roots of the game are evident in the game loop; it's sort of half like animal crossing and half like dailies. It's a little odd in that game time mostly isn't dependent on real time so it doesn't matter if you miss a few days but how many actions you do is limited by real days (plus events are seasonal based on real days). The main daily task is to give gifts to all the villagers. And you can also harvest, craft, fish, catch animals, etc. every day. And there are various daily/weekly questsThe main way it is different than animal crossing is the more rpg-ish quest system. Also there are puzzle dungeons and things like that. And a fair amount of exploration. In the long run you also have lots of houses to decorate so that part has a bit of an ACNH happy home paradise DLC feel.Compared to ACNH, all the npcs have both more personality and simultaneously even worse dialogue. Basically talking to them randomly doesn't give dialogue but they all have a lot of plot and lore.Ooh, also you get to be an animal yourself rather than a human which is nice.

  • The Synergy Between Quantum Computing And Generative AI
    www.forbes.com
Combining AI and quantum computing to automate code generation can lower businesses' barriers to entry and enable more rapid innovation.gettyBy Rajprasath Subramanian, Principal Enterprise Architect, SAPQuantum computing is on the verge of revolutionizing industries by solving problems that were previously thought to be beyond the reach of traditional computing. Meanwhile, Generative AI is rapidly reshaping how businesses automate processes, generate insights, and drive innovation. The intersection of these two groundbreaking technologies holds enormous potential, offering organizations a way to supercharge AI's capabilities, making it faster, more efficient, and capable of tackling challenges that are currently insurmountable with classical computing. The Challenge: AIs Growing Computational DemandsLarge AI models, such as large language models (LLMs), have made significant strides in automation, natural language understanding, and creative problem-solving. However, these models demand massive computational power for both training and deployment. Traditional hardware architectures, based on classical computing, are struggling to keep up with these needs. This has resulted in slower innovation cycles, increasing costs, and limited scalability. For example, optimization problemssuch as those involved in logistics, finance, and supply chainsremain costly and time-consuming, even for the most advanced AI solutions.Furthermore, data security concerns, energy inefficiencies, and processing bottlenecks remain prominent barriers that current AI infrastructure cannot fully address. Heres where quantum computing comes in.To fully realize the potential of quantum computing for Generative AI, businesses must adapt their AI strategies. Simply transferring current AI models to quantum computers will not suffice. The following changes are necessary for this transformation:Developing Quantum-Native AI ModelsCurrent AI models, built on classical computing principles, rely heavily on classical machine learning and deep learning algorithms. However, quantum computing operates on fundamentally different principlessuch as superposition, entanglement, and quantum interferencewhich can enable significantly more powerful AI models. Businesses will need to rethink AI model architecture, integrating quantum principles and algorithms to unlock new capabilities in decision-making, pattern recognition, and optimization. For executives, this represents a strategic opportunity: those who lead the charge in developing quantum-native AI will secure a competitive edge. These models can solve problems that are currently intractable for classical systemssuch as real-time, dynamic optimization of supply chains or complex, multi-variable scenarioswith far greater accuracy and speedEmbracing Hybrid AI ApproachesWhile quantum-native AI models will be developed over time, the immediate future will likely consist of hybrid systems that combine classical AI with quantum capabilities. This hybrid model will enable organizations to address specific tasks, such as optimization or data processing, where quantum computing excels. For instance, tasks like complex routing or forecasting can be enhanced by quantum-powered algorithms, while other aspects of the business continue to operate on classical AI.By adopting a hybrid approach, executives can bridge the gap between the current AI landscape and future quantum possibilities, ensuring businesses stay competitive without a full technological overhaul. Hybrid solutions will allow businesses to leverage the strengths of both worlds while transitioning gradually toward quantum-enhanced AI. Leading examples of hybrid quantum-classical systems include initiatives by Google Quantum AI and Microsoft Quantum, which are exploring real-world applications for optimization and machine learning.Automating Quantum Code GenerationOne of the major challenges with quantum computing is the need for specialized knowledge to create quantum algorithms. However, with Generative AI, businesses can automate quantum code generation. Instead of requiring quantum experts, business leaders, and analysts can simply describe their problems in natural language, and AI tools will generate the required quantum algorithms. This automation will democratize access to quantum capabilities, allowing organizations to deploy advanced solutions without a steep learning curve or the need for highly specialized quantum expertise.Combining AI and quantum computing to automate code generation is an exciting area being explored by Qiskit Code Assistant, IBMs open-source quantum computing platform. This can lower businesses' barriers to entry and enable more rapid innovation in quantum AI.Business Implications: Why It Matters NowFor executives, quantum computing's implications for Generative AI are significant and strategic. While quantum computing wont replace existing AI infrastructure in the short term, it will play an increasingly important role in the next generation of AI models. The competitive landscape is evolving, and companies that are proactive in understanding and investing in quantum-enhanced AI will be better positioned to lead in the future. Why Should Executives Act Now?Stay Ahead of Competitors: Leading tech companies are investing heavily in quantum AI research. As these technologies mature, companies that do not begin preparing for quantum integration may fall behind (source: Forbes).Unlock New Capabilities: Quantum computing holds the potential to transform industries like logistics, pharmaceuticals, finance, and cybersecurity. From optimizing supply chains to accelerating drug discovery or enhancing financial risk models, quantum-enhanced AI can provide new tools to solve existing problems more efficiently (source: McKinsey).Achieve Long-Term Efficiency and Cost Reduction: By adopting quantum-enhanced AI, businesses can address energy inefficiencies, speed up time-to-market, and reduce operational costs. This creates a direct line to a sustainable competitive advantage (source: World Economic forum).Invest in Talent and Skills: While quantum computing expertise is currently niche, future business leaders need to begin investing in upskilling their teams. Building a workforce that is familiar with both AI and quantum computing will be essential for long-term success.Quantum-enhanced AI is not science fictionit is fast becoming a strategic imperative. While the full integration of quantum computing into AI will take time, the groundwork is being laid today. Executives who understand the potential of quantum computing and begin to explore hybrid models now will position their organizations for success in the AI-driven future.Quantum computing represents a significant opportunity for innovation and competitive advantage. By preparing for this shift, businesses can unlock capabilities that were previously unimaginable, transforming industries and driving the next wave of AI-powered growth.

  • Asteria And Moonvalley Introduce Marey, An Ethically Sourced AI Video Model
    www.forbes.com
Hollywoods race to integrate AI into filmmaking has been complicated by legal and ethical questions surrounding generative media models. Today Asteria, a generative AI film and animation studio, and Moonvalley AI, unveiled Marey, a new AI-powered video model designed for Hollywood professionals, trained exclusively on licensed, curated content.Named after the pioneering chronophotographer tienne-Jules Marey, the Marey model will provide filmmakers with an ethical alternative to existing generative AI models, many of which have been criticized for scraping publicly available content without permission. We used all our resources, and a vast network of creators, to make sure we have a licensed, curated generative AI model, said Asteria CEO Bryn Mooser. This effort was supported by XTR, the documentary studio and streaming platform Mooser also founded, which played a key role in securing clean training data for the model.Unlike consumer-grade generative AI video models that focus on casual content creation, Marey is built for high-end production environments. Our thesis is that to make production-grade generative video viable, the key missing piece is control, explained Moonvalley CEO Naeem Talukdar in a recent appearance on the AI/XR Podcast. Todays video models are mostly text-to-videotype in a prompt, and you get a clip. Thats nowhere near whats needed for professional filmmaking.Moonvalley CEO Naeem TalukdarMoonvalleyMarey provides granular control over camera movement, object motion, and environmental consistency, which are critical for filmmakers looking to integrate AI into professional workflows. It also incorporates motion capture and video-to-video transformation tools, allowing creators to direct AI-generated content with the precision expected in traditional production settings. Asteria has been working with a range of directors and artists, including Paul Trillo, to refine these tools in real-world creative scenarios.Moonvalley, which recently secured $70 million in funding, has assembled a team of top AI researchers from DeepMind, Google, and Meta to develop Marey. Talukdar emphasized that the team is committed to overcoming the challenges of training high-quality video models on limited, legally sourced data. Most AI models are trained on an ocean of unlicensed content, which gives them an edge in variety but creates legal uncertainty. Were doing it differently, ensuring every pixel Marey has seen is accounted for.BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 07: (L-R) Natasha Lyonne and Bryn Mooser attend Netflix's 2024 ... The goal is to ensure that Marey delivers high-resolution, cinema-quality video without the technical pitfalls seen in other generative models, such as loss of coherence between frames or upscaling artifacts.Marey enters a competitive landscape, where established players like OpenAIs Sora and Google DeepMinds Veo are pushing the boundaries of AI-generated video. However, the distinction of a fully licensed training dataset sets Marey apart. This is about building an AI company that Hollywood can trust, said Talukdar. If you can't tell the difference, there is no difference. MoonvalleyAdobe, another major player in AI video tools, has also taken steps to ensure ethical AI implementation with its Firefly Video Model, which integrates directly into Premiere Pro. Firefly allows users to generate and enhance video clips with commercially safe AI. However, it has received mixed reviews, with some users disappointed by its limitations and pricing model. While Fireflys focus is on refining existing footage, Mareys ambition is to generate entirely new cinematic content from scratch. As AI video technology continues to evolve, Asteria and Moonvalleys approach reflects a growing demand for transparency and accountability in generative media. Whether Marey will become a staple in Hollywood productions remains to be seen, but its development signals a shift toward more ethical AI adoption in the entertainment industry.
