  • Parents worried about children's safety shouldn't let them play Roblox, company boss says
    www.eurogamer.net
Parents worried about children's safety shouldn't let them play Roblox, company boss says"I would always trust parents to make their own decisions."Image credit: Roblox News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on March 13, 2025 Parents shouldn't let their children play Roblox if they are worried about their kids' safety in-game, Roblox boss Dave Baszucki has said.Roblox, the gaming and social platform with 80 million daily users, has frequently been criticised for its lax player safety - particularly as the bulk of its audience is under 18. "My first message would be, if you're not comfortable, don't let your kids be on Roblox," Baszucki told BBC News in a new interview. "That sounds a little counter-intuitive, but I would always trust parents to make their own decisions."Roblox made a flurry of changes in late 2024 designed to improve child safety with the addition of basic parental control features, such as the ability to set playtime limits, remotely manage a child's account and view a child's friend list.Parental access is now required for children to access some in-game chat features, and children under 13 have been blocked from social hangout games due to "user behaviour that can potentially pose a risk". The changes came a month after a damning report was published detailing the ongoing safety issues for children in-game, which had been regularly highlighted for years."We do in the company take the attitude that any bad, even one bad incident, is one too many," Baszucki told BBC News today. "We watch for bullying, we watch for harassment, we filter all of those kinds of things, and I would say behind the scenes, the analysis goes on all the way to, if necessary, reaching out to law enforcement."In 2013, Roblox reported 13,316 instances of child exploitation to US authorities, and responded to over 1300 requests from authorities for detail on predatory players. Over the last six years, at least two dozen people have been arrested in the US for abusing victims met via Roblox.During the interview, BBC News showed Baszucki evidence of how easy it was to still set up accounts to chat between a user who was a minor and adults, as well as the titles of Roblox experiences recommended to an account of an 11-year-old, including "Late Night Boys And Girls Club RP" and "Special Forces Simulator"."One thing that's really important for the way we do things here, is it's not just on the title of the experience, it's literally on the content of the experience as well," Baszucki said in response.Last month, Roblox shares dropped by 20 percent after the platform's reported daily active users fell short of expectations, something the company blamed on a recent ban of the platform in Trkiye over child safety concerns.

  • Could deeptech serve as Europes path to autonomy from the US?
    techcrunch.com
Amidst geopolitical tensions and volatile markets, the question of Europes ability to weather the storms ahead, especially as President Trump seems intent on having his pound of tariffs from the continent, is looming large. But an extensive new report claims deeptech is poised to become a key pillar of Europes security, defense, and future autonomy, in particular from the U.S.Deeptech attracted 15 billion ($16.3 billion) in venture investments in 2024, according to a 184-page report by venture firms Lakestar, Walden Catalyst, Dealroom and the deeptech conference, Hello Tomorrow. The report also found that nearly one-third of all venture capital invested in Europe is now going to deep tech.M&A activity in the space increased to $12.2 billion last year, the report said, but it also found that European deeptech startups still rely on the U.S. for exits. Furthermore, 50% of the growth capital raised by deeptech startups comes from outside the continent. Still, deeptech could also be seen as a hedge against normal momentum investing amongst venture capitalists, said the report. The reports co-author Lukas Leitner, also a deeptech investor at Lakestar, told TechCrunch that while geopolitical tensions pose significant challenges, Europe needs to embrace the moment, and deeptech could be the key that unlocks future resilience for the continent. However, the road ahead is not without challenges. The U.S. has a flywheel effect in deeptech while Europes ecosystem is still immature, Leitner noted. We have a flywheel in the shallow tech scene. You see a lot of second-time founders, coming out of Revolut and so on, building great companies. But not yet from deeptech companies.Europe has strong research institutions, engineering talent, and supportive public sentiment for deeptech, but there need to be policy changes to foster a culture that supports taking risks, he added.Arnaud de la Tour, the CEO of Hello Tomorrow, said that the notion that compute-poor Europe would always lag in AI was recently challenged by the appearance of open-source DeepSeek: Its a huge opportunity for Europe, because we have great AI talent [] Many are looking to come back to Europe because of the geopolitical landscape. But we definitely need to have the right policy framework in order to unlock the kind of potential that we have.Leitner pointed out that Europes relative weakness in computing power is offset by its strengths in photonics computing, which offers major advantages in speed and efficiency. Were really good in Europe with photonics, because we have good laser systems, and we have good fundamental research on the photonic side, he said.De la Tour added that Europe could also take advantage of a brain-drain in the U.S. as science is defunded by the Trump administration. The National Science Foundation, which is the biggest supporter of founder-applied research in the U.S. has had its budget cut by half. A lot of those great scientists dont have a job anymore, and many could come to Europe, he said.

  • Ready to drive without your hands on the wheel or eyes on the road?

Tech Ready to drive without your hands on the wheel or eyes on the road? Imagine relaxing while your car takes care of the road Published March 13, 2025 6:00am EDT close AI dashcams make roads safer for truckers, but at what cost to privacy? Stellantis unveils its STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system, which the company hopes will revolutionize the way we drive. Are you ready to use your daily commute to catch up on your favorite show, respond to emails or simply enjoy the view without worrying about the road ahead? This vision of the future is becoming increasingly real thanks to advancements in autonomous driving technology. Stellantis, the parent company of brands like Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler, has just unveiled its STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system, which the company hopes will soon revolutionize the way we drive. STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system (Stellantis)The future of driving is here ... almostStellantis has developed its cutting-edge Level 3 automated driving system. This innovative technology allows motorists to safely take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. Stellantis' STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system is designed to handle driving tasks autonomously at speeds of up to 37 mph in traffic and on highways under certain conditions. This means drivers can potentially engage in activities like watching movies, reading books or catching up on emails during their commute.GET EXPERT SECURITY ALERTS, MUST-KNOW TECH TIPS AND THE LATEST DIGITAL TRENDS STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.SIGN UP FOR KURT'S THE CYBERGUY REPORT NOWThe system will manage steering, acceleration, braking and maintain safe distances from other vehicles without human intervention. However, there's a catch: Despite being fully developed and ready for deployment, Stellantis isn't launching these features just yet. The company cites a limited market for Level 3 autonomous driving as the reason for holding back, that they'll introduce the technology once the market becomes more receptive.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system (Stellantis)What sets STLA AutoDrive apart?STLA AutoDrive offers several impressive features that make it stand out in the world of autonomous driving. It offers hands-free and eyes-off functionality at speeds of up to 37 mph, allowing drivers to completely disengage from driving tasks. The system is designed to work at night and in light rain, providing reliable performance in various weather conditions.Additionally, an automated sensor-cleaning system ensures that critical components remain clear for optimal reliability and functionality. Built on a cloud-connected platform, STLA AutoDrive can receive over-the-air updates to improve its capabilities, making it a scalable and adaptable technology. Furthermore, Stellantis hints at potential upgrades that could enable operation at speeds of up to 59 mph and even off-road automation. STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system (Stellantis)The challenges of Level 3 autonomyLevel 3 autonomy, often referred to as "conditional automation," presents unique challenges. The system can only be activated under certain driving conditions, requiring specific environmental and traffic criteria to be met. Also, drivers must remain alert and prepared to take control at a moment's notice, which can be a difficult standard to maintain. Regulatory authorities also face challenges in setting and enforcing standards for this level of autonomy, as it requires a delicate balance between safety and technological innovation. STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system (Stellantis)The race for autonomous drivingStellantis isn't alone in the pursuit of Level 3 autonomy. Mercedes-Benz was the first to launch an SAE Level 3 system in commercial vehicles in Europe and the U.S. in 2023. Other major automakers, including Honda, Ford, GM, Volvo, Sony, Kia and Xpeng, are also developing their own Level 3 systems, indicating a competitive and rapidly evolving landscape in the automotive industry.WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?What this means for driversWhen STLA AutoDrive eventually hits the market, it could significantly change the driving experience. Automated driving in heavy traffic could make commutes less stressful, allowing you to relax or engage in other activities. Additionally, you might be able to use travel time more efficiently, whether that means catching up on work or enjoying leisure activities. Enhanced safety is another potential benefit, as advanced sensors and AI could reduce human error and improve overall road safety. STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system being used at night (Stellantis)Kurt's key takeawaysStellantis' STLA AutoDrive is no doubt a significant milestone toward fully autonomous vehicles. While the technology is ready, the market and regulatory landscape are still catching up. As automakers continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, we're inching closer to a future where cars truly drive themselves. However, the transition will likely be gradual, with safety and consumer acceptance playing crucial roles in the widespread adoption of Level 3 and beyond autonomous driving technologies.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPAre you ready to take your hands off the wheel and let technology do the driving? • Major strike by Fujitsu staff at cash cow HMRC
    www.computerweekly.com
Claudio Divizia - stock.adobe.coNewsMajor strike by Fujitsu staff at cash cow HMRCFujitsu staff working at government department will strike for 22 days in protest over pay offerByKarl Flinders,Chief reporter and senior editor EMEAPublished: 13 Mar 2025 10:20 Fujitsu staff supporting IT services contracts at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will strike for 22 days in protest after in-house colleagues in similar roles received significantly higher pay rises.Members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union at the scandal-stained supplier will down tools at HMRC on 21 March and not return until 23 April.Fujitsu staff working on HMRC contracts were offered a 1.5% pay rise compared with the 5% received by in-house colleagues in similar roles. The union said: The new round of action is expected to affect time-sensitive work, putting Fujitsu at risk of financial penalties for missing targets.A Fujitsu spokesperson said:Following a two-day strike by the workers in January, the union did not rule out further action in the coming weeks because members are angry that Fujitsu reports large profits from the HMRC account while offering them below-inflation pay rises.HMRC has become a UK cash cow for Fujitsu, which has continued to win major deals despite its pledge to pause bidding on government contracts after public anger over its role in the Post Office Horizon scandal. As revealed by Computer Weekly, despite reports suggesting Fujitsu will be replaced on HMRCs Traders Support Service, an internal meeting revealed Fujitsu is, in fact, bidding for thenew 370m contract and is confident of a renewal of its contract, which was worth 240m when it was signed in 2020.Computer Weekly also revealed a direct deal between HMRC and Fujitsu for hardware and cloud procurement, worth over 200m and known as North Star, where there is no competitive tender. Meanwhile, the department is also extending its Computer Environment for Self-Assessment (CESA) contract worth just shy of 60m, where Fujitsu is the incumbent.HMRC had not responded to a request for comment when this article was published.Fujitsu told its UK staff in September 2024 that there would be no UK-wide pay rise this year as it prioritised a limited budget, fuelling anger among a workforce with low morale. One Fujitsu worker not involved in this action showed support for the striking staff, saying: Good luck to them for standing up for their rights at a company that dodges accountability.Fran Heathcote, general secretary at the PCS, said:Fujitsu continues to report large profits from the HMRC account, but never offers staff anything close to inflation, devaluing our members salaries over many years, despite their skills and knowledge being vital in ensuring HMRCs tax systems remain working. This is a classic example of all thats wrong with outsourcing colleagues working side by side being paid different rates for doing similar jobs.Fujitsu also faces pressure from politicians to pay an interim contribution to the huge cost to taxpayers of the Post Office scandal. Last month, peer Kevan Jones demanded that Fujitsu make an interim payment of 300m.Since then, the government and Fujitsu have initiated talks about Fujitsus contribution to the scandal bill, which will run into billions of pounds. The announcement of talks made no mention of an interim payment.Computer Weeklyfirst exposed the scandal in 2009, revealing the stories of seven subpostmasters and the problems they suffered due to Horizon accounting software, which led to the most widespread miscarriage of justice in British history.2024 was a year Fujitsu would like to forgetIn The Current Issue:Digital twins map the world and guide strategic decisionsLiverpool reinvents customer service through digital platformDownload Current IssueSUSECON 2025: An evolved portfolio of 'validated' infrastructure tools Open Source InsiderSLM series - SAS: Whats old is new again CW Developer NetworkView All Blogs
