• A Fake Elon Musk Promises 90% Off Electricity Bills In New Scam
    www.forbes.com
Beware the latest fake Elon Musk scam.AFP via Getty ImagesElon Musk has been in the news a lot lately. Whether its a massive cyberattack against X, the Musk owned social media platform, ongoing headlines regarding DOGE, or even allegations that Musks X messages are being monitored by homeland security in the U.K., its hard not to be swept up in the Musk media frenzy. And that, dear reader, is precisely what threat actors are working on when they launch scam attacks using Elon Musk as the bait. One such new attack has now been confirmed to be using promises of a 90% saving on electricity bills using a gadget supposedly invented by Musk himself. Heres what you need to know. The Elon Musk Invention That Isnt And The Scam That IsA new threat campaign distributing SMS messages in the U.S. that use a likeness of Elon Musk, alongside claims that he has invented a gizmo that can save 90% of your electricity bill just by plugging it in, has been confirmed. The personalized messages direct victims to fake websites having used a fake Elon Musk endorsement to convince them that the incredulous-sounding gadget really is the answer to their power bill payment problems. Bizarrely, the gadget itself really does exist, but obviously doesnt work as described. The stinger being that the scammers are selling a cheap Chinese product worth a few dollars for significantly more, and throwing in some malware for good measure.According to researchers at Bitdefender, the ongoing malicious campaign has already sent thousands of SMS messages to targets in the U.S. that are personalised to the extent that they use the recipients real name for added authenticity. So far, so meh. After all, phishing scams are nothing new. This one, however, has a twist. Besides traditional phishing and malware, theres a third option, Silviu Stahie, a security analyst at Bitdefender, said. That third option, Stacie continued, is directing victims to website that appears to be a media article with Musk promoting the supposed miracle device that it is claimed he invented.A fake Elon Musk endorsement used in the scam.BitdefenderHow To Spot The Fake Elon Musk Power Prices Phishing ScamBitdefender said that the Elon Musk electricity savings scam can be spotted by the use of SMS messages that are always sent from within the U.S. and contain text that mentions the payment, overpayment or savings in relation to electricity bills. The security experts also warned that the phishing links in these messages are associated with domains including esavrr, gimelove and eaelon dot com.Bitdefender warned everyone not to click on any links in unsolicited messages claiming to provide energy-saving tips, to verify any such claims directly with your energy provider and to report all suspicious messages to your phone carrier and law enforcement. And remember, Elon Musk hasnt invented an energy saving plug-in gizmo, no matter how much youd like to believe he has.

  • The Release Of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remake Is Reportedly Imminent
    www.forbes.com
OblivionBethesdaThe development of an Elder Scrolls: Oblivion remake was leaked back in 2023 by a supposed developer, but also in a court document shortly after. So, it seemed pretty clear it was happening, and the question was just, when? The answer may be now. Or very close to now.Multiple reports have surfaced in the past day from the likes of insider NatetheHate with VGC saying something similar. Nate says the Oblivion remake could be here before June. VGC says it may actually arrive next month. This is not some sort of full-on Bethesda project, rather its being developed by Virtuous, who has worked on loads of different high profile games, and their latest remake contribution besides this one is Konamis Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. This is a pretty elaborate project, with the entire game being remade in Unreal Engine 5, and a number of reworked gameplay systems that include:The HUD Meant to be easier to understand for new playersStamina Meant to be less frustrating and for players to be knocked down less when its depletedHit Reactions Meant to improve combat on both the player and enemy sideBlocking Meant to be inspired by Souls-like gamesSneaking Meant to have sneak icons more highlightedArchery Meant to make it modern for third and first person play (Stealth Archer, here we come). This may make you feel ancient, but the original Elder Scrolls: Oblivion was released in 2006, making this a project manifesting a full 19 years later. Given that, its no wonder that it has to be effectively remade in a modern engine, along with granting quality of life updates for aging systems. What we do not have is any sort of real look at what this is going to be like, though if this really is going to drop imminently, thats either going to happen soon, or it will be a stealth release, as Xbox has been prone to do in the past. I havent seen what platforms this is confirmed for, but Im going to say its a 95% chance it will be heading to PlayStation. I also believe its like a 90% chance that The Elder Scrolls 6 will launch there as well, given Microsofts latest strategies about multiplatform releases, and how they would no doubt want to sell 15+ million copies of the game on a different console, if theyll be doing a Game Pass launch themselves. As for the Oblivion remake, expect more information soon, and if its a launch next month? Thats going to be pretty wild. Cant wait to see what its like.Follow me , and .Pick up my sci-fi novels the and

  • Apple and Google browser policies are "holding back" browser innovation, UK probe says
    www.techspot.com
In brief: A lengthy investigation by UK competition regulators has scrutinized Apple and Google's tight control over mobile browsers, accusing the tech giants of stifling innovation and potentially hindering economic growth. The report suggests that consumers may be missing out on valuable browser features and enhancements as a result. The massive 611-page report, published this week by the Competition and Markets Authority, pulls no punches in criticizing Apple and Google's restrictive mobile browsing policies. The regulator argues that these rules are "holding back" new browser features from reaching consumers and making it harder for businesses to connect with potential customers online. Most of the CMA's criticisms focus on Apple's tight control over browsing on iOS devices. The report takes issue with Apple's requirement that all third-party browsers use its WebKit engine, preventing them from offering unique features. It also criticizes Safari for gaining early access to key platform capabilities, ahead of competitors, as well as iOS restrictions on progressive web apps and in-app browsing. However, Google didn't escape scrutiny either. The CMA raised concerns about the revenue-sharing agreement between Google and Apple, in which the former pays a large portion of the ad revenue generated through Safari and Chrome on iOS back to Apple. According to the report, these payments are so substantial that they "significantly" reduce Google's incentive to compete with Apple's Safari browser.Despite outlining a lengthy list of concerns, the CMA did not take any enforcement action as part of this investigation. Instead, it recommended waiting for the outcomes of separate probes that were launched earlier this year. For context, the CMA opened separate investigations into Apple and Google's entire mobile ecosystems in January. One of the objectives is to determine whether the tech giants should be officially designated as having "strategic market status" under the UK's new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act. If this designation is made, the regulator would gain greater powers to take action against them. // Related StoriesThe report also proposed potential remedies, including forcing Apple to allow alternative browser engines on iOS, mandating equal access to iOS features for rival browsers, and banning the controversial Google-Apple revenue-sharing agreement. Additionally, it suggested more stringent regulation of how Google displays browser choice screens and the frequency of default browser pop-ups on Android.Overall, the report offers a glimpse into how competition regulators might attempt to loosen Apple and Google's joint dominance over mobile browsing. With bipartisan frustration in the US, ongoing EU investigations, and rising global scrutiny, the issues highlighted are unlikely to disappear. Whether regulators will take action remains to be seen.

  • Airline rules on portable batteries are getting stricter – and more inconsistent
    www.techspot.com
In brief: Rechargeable batteries are so ubiquitous that passenger airplanes usually carry hundreds per flight, but recent incidents have highlighted the danger they can present when exposed to extreme conditions. Airlines have begun taking more precautions but haven't agreed on common standards, creating a potentially confusing situation for frequent international fliers. Airlines in multiple Asian countries recently introduced new rules regarding rechargeable batteries after a fire destroyed an aircraft in South Korea. Each airline responded differently, highlighting the absence of shared standards.Since March 1, all South Korean airlines have required passengers to keep power banks and e-cigarettes with them and not in overhead compartments. Furthermore, passengers can't charge batteries on board, must carry them in clear plastic bags, are limited to five 100Wh batteries, and cannot bring batteries exceeding 160Wh.The changes are meant to allay public concerns following a January incident in which a fire engulfed an Air Busan plane at Incheon International Airport. All 170 passengers safely evacuated the flight, but the aircraft was totaled. While no evidence definitively links the fire to a battery, an investigation indicated that it started in an overhead compartment.Flights often contain hundreds of rechargeable batteries because most travelers carry at least one electronic device containing them. Just one battery suffering from a defect or being crushed can cause smoke or a fire, endangering the entire flight. Although passengers can evacuate a plane on the ground, crews must usually respond to in-flight incidents by extinguishing fires, spraying liquid on batteries, and storing them in containers. On the same day the new South Korean regulations went into force, Taiwanese airlines EVA Air and China Airlines banned power banks on their planes, but both still permit batteries in overhead compartments. Thai Airways will also ban power banks starting March 15. // Related StoriesAlthough rechargeable batteries have been common on airplanes for years, incidents involving them have become more frequent. Last July, a laptop caused a fire aboard an American Airlines flight in San Francisco, forcing passengers to evacuate and causing injuries.Laptops on planes are already restricted to hand luggage only and can't have batteries exceeding 100Wh, which has impacted manufacturing trends. Lithium-ion batteries have also long been banned from passenger plane cargo holds and must remain below 30 percent charge on cargo planes.

  • iPhone 17 Slim will be thin, but not Apples slimmest
    www.digitaltrends.com
Theres been a lot of chatter surrounding a slimmer model of the iPhone 17 of late. The device has been the subject of the rumour mill for months, going by both the iPhone 17 Slim and the iPhone 17 Air in reports, with neither name confirmed of course. The latest report does further support how thin the iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Air could be if it is released, however. It was previously suggested by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that the iPhone 17 Slim would measure 5.5mm. Sounds thin, right? Well, it would be, even if not the slimmest Apple product, which is currently the iPad Pro (M4, 2024) at 5.3mm.Recommended VideosIf the 5.5mm measurement is accurate though, which leaker Ice Universe has supported in a recent post on Chinese social media site Weibo, it would make the iPhone slimmer than both the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, said to be 5.8mm thick, as well as the Techno Spark Slim concept that was presented at MWC 2025 with a thickness of 5.75mm.Please enable Javascript to view this contentThe report on Weibo by Ice Universe, spotted by Apple Insider, suggests the iPhone 17 Slim would have a camera bump of 4mm with a total thickness of 9.5mm. For context, the iPhone 16 is listed as being 7.8mm without the camera bump included in the measurement, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max is listed as 8.25mm. The 9.5mm total without the 4mm camera bump would suggest the iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim would be 5.5mm, something Ice Universe has previously stated elsewhere.A couple of comparison images were also recently posted by mobile news leaker Majin Bu on X, appearing to show the iPhone 17 Slim alongside the iPhone 16 Pro Max. A measurement wasnt detailed in this leak, though it does give a visual idea of just how slim the iPhone 17 Air could be compared to the current flagship iPhone.Nothing is confirmed for the iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim as yet, so for now, its not even known if it will exist. If it does launch alongside the iPhone 17 series later this year however, there is a chance it will carry the accolade of the worlds thinnest smartphone.Editors Recommendations
