Credit: Getty | NurPhoto Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreWith federal funding imperiled by brutal funding cuts under the Trump administration, biomedical graduate programs nationwide are making tough decisions that will scale back the next generation of scientists. On Wednesday, news broke that UMass Chan Medical Schoola public school in the University of Massachusetts systemhas rescinded all offers of admission to biomedical graduate students for the 20252026 school year. That means an entire class of future scientists has been wiped out. Those who were initially accepted to the program can try to join again in a future cycle under a priority consideration that won't require them to reapply, according to a letter sent to a previously admitted student that was shared on social media. In a statement provided to NBC10 Boston, a spokesperson for the school confirmed that several dozen applicants had their acceptance offers rescinded. "With uncertainties related to the funding of biomedical research in this country, this difficult decision was made to ensure that our current students progress is not disrupted by the funding cuts and that we avoid matriculating students who may not have robust opportunities for dissertation research," the statement reads.Rachael Sirianni, a biomedical engineer in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UMass Chan Medical School who works on treatments for pediatric brain tumors, called the situation "heartbreaking." Writing on Bluesky, Sirianni called it "a terrible loss for students. But its also a loss for all of science. Science *runs* on grad student labor." But, she added: "Public medical schools have no other choice; there is no other source of funding, and everyone in academia is at extreme risk right now."Cuts across the countryUMass is the latest biomedical graduate program to make news for cutbacks amid the Trump administration's new policies. The administration has halted new grant funding and is trying to radically cut support for so-called "indirect" research costs, which cover maintaining laboratory space and administrative functions, among other things. The cut has been temporarily put on hold amid a legal battle. Many schools are now bracing for steep declines in support. At Duke University, administrators have implemented hiring freezes, scaled back research plans, and will cut the number of admitted biomedical PhD students by 23 percent or more, according to reporting by the Associated Press. The school took in $580 million in grants and contracts from the National Institutes of Health last year.At Vanderbilt University, faculty were sent an email on February 6 instructing them to reduce graduate admissions by half across the board, according to Stat. The outlet also reported that faculty at the University of Washington's School of Public Health have reduced admissions.Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania also reported having to rescind admission offers to applicants and were directed to significantly reduce admission rates, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian. The University of Wisconsin-Madison, too, is shrinking its graduate programs, according to the WKOW.com.Beth Sullivan, who oversees graduate programs at Duke, told the AP that the shrinking classes mean a shrinking pipeline into America's medical research community, which dominates the world's health research fields and is a significant force in the country's economy. "Our next generation of researchers are now poised on the edge of this cliff, not knowing if there's going to be a bridge that's going to get them to the other side, or if this is it," Sullivan said."This is a severe blow to science and the training of the next generation of scientists, Siyuan Wang, a geneticist and cell biologist at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, told Nature. "With fewer scientists, there will be less science and innovation that drive societal progress and the improvement of public health."This post was updated to correct Rachael Sirianni's job title.Beth MoleSenior Health ReporterBeth MoleSenior Health Reporter Beth is Ars Technicas Senior Health Reporter. • Google is bringing every Android game to Windows in big gaming update
    arstechnica.com
Google's got games Google is bringing every Android game to Windows in big gaming update Google has big plans for gaming in 2025. Ryan Whitwam Mar 13, 2025 11:45 am | 45 Credit: Ryan Whitwam Credit: Ryan Whitwam Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreThe annual Game Developers Conference is about to kick off, and even though Stadia is dead and buried, Google has a lot of plans for games. It's expanding tools that help PC developers bring premium games to Android, and games are heading in the other direction, too. The PC-based Play Games platform is expanding to bring every single Android game to Windows. Google doesn't have a firm timeline for all these changes, but 2025 will be an interesting year for the company's gaming efforts.Google released the first beta of Google Play Games on PC back in 2022, allowing you to play Android games on a PC. It has chugged along quietly ever since, mostly because of the anemic and largely uninteresting game catalog. While there are hundreds of thousands of Android games, only a handful were made available in the PC client. That's changing in a big way now that Google is bringing over every Android game from Google Play.Starting today, you'll see thousands of new games in Google Play Games on PC. Developers actually have to opt out if they don't want their games available on Windows machines via Google Play Games. Google says this is possible thanks to improved custom controls, making it easy to map keyboard and gamepad controls onto games that were designed for touchscreens (see below). The usability of these mapped controls will probably vary dramatically from game to game. While almost every Android game will soon be available on Windows, not all will get top billing. Google Play Games on PC has a playability badge, indicating a game has been tested on Windows. Games that have been specifically optimized for PC get a more prominent badge. Games with the "Playable" or "Optimized" distinction will appear throughout the client in lists of suggested titles, but untested games will only appear if you search for them. However, you can install them all just the same, and they'll work better on AMD-based machines, support for which has been lacking throughout the beta.Google also previewed a few more changes coming to the PC-based game platform. In the next few weeks, the service will get a new sidebar for easy access to game and control settings. Google Play Games on PC will also get support for multi-account and multi-instance, allowing you to play multiple games with more than one account at the same time. This is, allegedly, a highly requested feature. If this sounds like a lot to add to a beta service, you're right. Google confirms Play Games on PC will be shedding that designation later this year. While there are many, many mobile games that won't translate well to a computer regardless of Google's updated control mapping, plenty will work just fine and provide a new source of games for Windows. Is Google finally getting serious about Android gaming? As for games on Android, Google now hopes to build on the success of high-end cross-platform hits like Genshin Impact and Diablo Immortal. These games are crawling with in-app purchases, but they're very pretty and have made a lot of money on Android.Google has often fallen short on developer support in the Play Store, but the expanded native PC program could help it turn a corner. There will be a new native SDK for PC games, helping developers distribute titles in the Play Store with support for both mobile and PC builds. So you might see PC-only games being distributed on Windows via Google's Play Games client. Look out, Steam? The program is also open to all interested PC game developers starting today.Meanwhile, developers building high-end games for mobile will be happy to hear that Google is going all-in with Vulkan. Google says Android is moving to a "modern, unified rendering stack" with Vulkan as the default graphics API. This will make it easier for developers to take advantage of features like ray tracing and multithreading, and Google promises deep integration with popular engines like Unity 6 to supposedly make it easier to optimize for Android's diverse hardware ecosystem. This has been one of the most substantial barriers to entry for developers to port games to Android.Google says it's also launching a new pilot program to give developers tools to bring PC-first experiences to Android devices, and it has three titles lined up, one of which is already live. The fishing adventure Dredge is on sale in the Play Store after launching on PC and consoles in 2023. It will be joined in several weeks by the mobile version of the popular physics-based strategy game TABS. The old-school-style RPG Disco Elysium will arrive later this year as well. Dredge is listed at a whopping $25, which is the same as its Steam list price. So we would expect future PC-on-Android games to be similarly spendy.Nothing is changing overnight, but these are all positive moves for Google's gaming efforts. The proliferation of free-to-play games on mobile has drowned out premium experiences. After trudging through in-app purchases in almost every popular mobile game for years, it may actually be refreshing to pay $25 for a good-looking mobile game that doesn't beg for money every few minutes.Ryan WhitwamSenior Technology ReporterRyan WhitwamSenior Technology Reporter Ryan Whitwam is a senior technology reporter at Ars Technica, covering the ways Google, AI, and mobile technology continue to change the world. • You could train your brain to be less fooled by optical illusions
    www.newscientist.com
Did you spot that the orange circle on the left is smaller than the one on the right?Radoslaw Wincza et al. (2025)Optical illusions may make you feel like a fool, but you could be able to train your brain to resist them.It is very likely that people from the general population have the capacity to be trained to unsee illusions and perceive the world more objectively, says Radoslaw Wincza at Lancaster University, UK. AdvertisementWincza and his colleagues recruited 44 radiologists, with an average age of 36, who had spent more than a decade spotting small details such as fractures in medical scans. They also looked at 107 university students, average age 23, who were studying medicine or psychology. Each participant was shown four illusions on a screen, one at a time. In each illusion, the participant saw pairs of shapes or lines of slightly different sizes or lengths, and had to select the larger or longer one.In three of the illusions, other objects made the larger shape or longer line appear to be the smaller or shorter one. The team found that radiologists were less susceptible to these illusions than the students. The latest science news delivered to your inbox, every day.Sign up to newsletterRadiologists have this ability to really focus on the key elements of the visual scene, where they disregard irrelevant context and have a tunnel vision, says Wincza. By better tuning into the target, they dont experience the illusion as much.In the fourth illusion, one of the shapes was vertical, while its pair was horizontal. This made the latter appear wider, even though it was actually narrower. Both groups were equally susceptible to the illusion. That is probably because this one didnt include any surrounding objects, so it was less about tuning out background distractions, which radiologists may be well practised at, says Wincza. It suggests anyone can gain that ability to be less susceptible to illusions if they train themselves, says Karla Evans at the University of York, UK. For instance, focusing on specific aspects of a picture might improve this ability, though further work is needed to see how quickly this comes about, she says. It could take years, or weeks.Journal reference:Scientific Reports DOI: 10.1038/s41598-025-88178-yTopics:brain

  • NASA may have to cancel major space missions due to budget cuts
    www.newscientist.com
NASAs headquarters in Washington DCJohn M. Chase/Getty ImagesNASA is preparing for substantial budget cuts that may force the cancellation of ongoing and upcoming missions across the solar system, leaving it facing a brutal future, experts have warned. The space agency has already begun some layoffs as part of the extensive restructuring of US federal agencies by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an independent task force led by Elon Musk. Earlier this week, it announced it would close its Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy; the Office of the Chief Scientist; and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility branch in the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity in Washington DC, representing a total of 23 jobs at the agency. AdvertisementChange of this magnitude is never easy, but our strength comes from our shared commitment to our mission and each other, Janet Petro, NASAs acting administrator, wrote in an email to staff. I encourage you to support one another as we move forward. One employee of the Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy, who learned they had been laid off this week and were granted anonymity because of fear of reprisal, says they were an easy target because their office was established under the administration of Joe Biden. Some people thought this might be coming, they say.The roles of chief technologist and chief economist for NASA were within this office, which helped with strategic planning across the agency, says the employee. That included managing the recent uptick in lunar missions and making sure those missions dont interfere with one another when planning moon-based landing sites and operations.Voyage across the galaxy and beyond with our space newsletter every month.Sign up to newsletterTheres a lot of interest in the lunar south pole, and theres concern about operating near one another, they said, such as kicking up dust that could coat solar panels on other vehicles. I dont think these issues will be tackled moving forward. These losses are expected to be just the start of a much larger cull at NASA. Casey Dreier at US space-exploration advocacy group The Planetary Society says there are rumours that, in his upcoming budget request, President Donald Trump will direct NASAs overall science budget to be cut by as much as 50 per cent, in favour of spending money on crewed space exploration. That would be a blow to NASAs Science Mission Directorate office, which handles pretty much everything NASA does thats not a crewed spaceflight mission, says Dreier; it currently has a budget of about $7 billion out of NASAs total $25 billion annual budget.A scientist familiar with NASAs policy decisions, speaking anonymously for fear of reprisal, says that any cuts requested by the president will still need to be approved by Congress, which might not so readily support them. NASA is really beloved on a bipartisan basis, they say. But if the cuts did go ahead, they would essentially be the end of NASA science, they add. No mission will be safe.Halving the budget would be a profoundly brutal consequence that would symbolise the nation turning its back on the cosmos, says Dreier, and would result in many missions cancellation. While some missions in their prime like the James Webb Space Telescope would probably survive, those most at risk are missions either in early planning stages or later in their lives. That could include climate satellites, the Hubble Space Telescope, the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers on Mars and the Voyager missions, which were the first spacecraft to ever leave our solar system. The effects on NASA could be permanent: If you completely destroy the pipeline of people, you have a significant and long-lasting consequence, says Dreier. It is an extinction-level event. In a letter to Petro this week, Zoe Lofgren of California, the top Democrat on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, urged NASA to fight back against the cuts. DOGE will seek to slash and burn core functions of NASA, she wrote. It is imperative that you stand up for NASAs critical work.Speaking toNew Scientist, Lofgren warned that the situation could have international ramifications. Dismantling NASAs highly skilled workforce would be a giant leap backwards for the United States and enable a giant leap forward for China, she said. Senseless and reckless reductions will cripple the agencys ability to maintain its leadership in cutting-edge innovation, curiosity-driven science and human exploration.Topics:

  • Read the letter Tesla wrote warning the Trump administration about harm from a trade war

2025-03-13T23:15:53Z Read in app President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, along with his son X A-Xii, speaks to reporters by a Tesla vehicle on the South Lawn of the White House. Pool via AP This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? The Trump administration says imposing tariffs on trade partners is a way to shrink the US trade deficit.Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has been a key Trump backer, but a trade war would raise costs for its cars.In a letter, the company urged the US government to ensure the trade war doesn't "inadvertently harm US companies."Tesla has warned the Trump administration that it could bear the cost of the president's attempts to impose so-called retaliatory tariffs on US trade partners. In an unsigned letter uploaded to a regulatory docket on March 11, the automaker said a trade war could increase costs to manufacture its vehicles and lead other countries to slap tariffs on Tesla vehicles made in Austin or electronic equipment it makes in states such as California and Nevada."Past US special tariff actions have thus increased costs to Tesla for vehicles manufactured in the United States, and increased costs for those same vehicles when exported from the United States, resulting in less competitive international marketplace for US manufacturers," the company wrote.Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, has been named a "special government employee" who has been closely associated with Donald Trump's drive to shrink and automate the federal government. The letter underscores how his political interests and his business interests could diverge.Tesla's share price has fallen by nearly half since its December peak. Musk said earlier in the week he was having a tough time running his businesses due to his involvement with the White House DOGE office."Tesla supports a robust and thorough process to gather information to ensure appropriate actions are taken to address unfair trade practices and which, in the process, do not inadvertently harm US companies," said the letter, which was previously reported by the Financial Times. The fact that the letter wasn't signed may be unusual, but isn't unprecedented for Tesla, which has previously submitted comments to the IRS without a signature at the bottom. Letters it has submitted to other agencies have included signatures.Tesla, Musk, and the White House did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment. The letter was uploaded to a public comment portal for the US Trade Representative on March 11 by an in-house lawyer at Tesla. It is embedded below. The letter was sent on the same day Trump invited Musk and a lineup of Teslas to the south lawn of the White House for a publicity event. Trump said he'd be buying a Tesla to show his support for Musk and his company after acts of dealership vandalism. The on-and-off threats of tariffs on Canada and Mexico could deal huge blows to America's largest automakers.Barclays analysts wrote in a March 5 note that a 25% levy on goods from Canada and Mexico could wipe out profits for Ford, GM, and Stellantis, assuming no price increase or adjustment in production plans."If you look at the tariffs, let's be real honest, long term, a 25% tariff across the Mexico and Canadian border would blow a hole in the US industry that we have never seen," Ford CEO Jim Farley said in February.Tesla also would feel the effects, considering 20-25% of the components for its 2025 model-year vehicles come from Mexico, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing."There's a lot of uncertainty around tariffs," Tesla's Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja said in an earnings call on January 29. "Over the years, we've tried to localize our supply chain in every market, but we are still reliant on parts from across the world for all our businesses. Therefore, the imposition of tariffs, which is very likely, and any will have an impact on our business and profitability."

  • US special operators want drones to help them execute a dangerous mission — fighting in caves

2025-03-13T20:47:30Z Read in app A new procurement notice signals special operators want a drone for dangerous cave missions. US Army photo by Sgt. David Cordova This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? US special operations forces want new drones for cave and tunnel operations.Drones could offer communication and situational awareness benefits over military working dogs.US special operators are often at the forefront of working with industry on new technologies.Fighting inside caves and tunnels is a tough and dangerous mission, even for elite special operations forces.Drones could help solve key problems operators face, such as communication and threat detection issues, while reducing the risk to human warfighters and military working dogs.SOCOM, on behalf of SOCCENT, which oversees US special operations forces in the Middle East, said in a recent procurement notice first reported by The War Zone that caves present severe logistical problems for operators. The battlespaces are confined spaces characterized by unpredictable terrain and limited visibility. A narrow passageway can instantly become a kill box.In the Middle East, both state and non-state actors have used networks of caves and tunnels, complicating military operations against them."To mitigate these risks and enhance operational effectiveness, we propose the acquisition and deployment of a dedicated UAS solution," SOCOM said in the request, referring to uncrewed aerial system solutions. Drones would reduce risk to personnel and dogs and improve operational efficiency. US Air Force photo by Senior Airman Jhade Herrera Drones come in a range of sizes, from pocket-size Black Hornet drones to quadcopters and octocopters to large, sophisticated combat and reconnaissance drones like the Reaper. Small UAS solutions have proven tremendously valuable in Ukraine, where some have flown into the open hatches of tanks with precision.SOCOM is seeking a compact first-person-view drone. The fast, real-time intelligence provided by drones would not only reduce dangers to operators and dogs but also "significantly improve the safety and efficiency of cave clearing operations, ultimately contributing to mission success and force protection," SOCOM said.Per the procurement notice, a specific but unnamed company has been identified as the only vendor that can provide the desired platform, training, and capabilities for this drone. SOCOM noted that the model has a compact body enabling it "to operate effectively in confined spaces."Subterranean and underground operations are daunting. Tunnel warfare has been a key focus in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency efforts, and training for fights in these brutal environments has increased in recent years. Subterranean warfare can be complex, especially due to the terrain and potential loss of communication. REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra While it's unclear which specific drone model Special Operations Command is hoping to acquire for its forces, the notice is indicative of a larger priority to introduce more drones into operations. At a symposium last month, special operations leadership and defense industry officials spoke candidly about the need to buy and develop more drones and autonomous systems to help their operators address difficult threats. When it comes to adapting new technology quickly, flexible acquisition process, as well as close relationships with industry partners able to help it rapidly iterate and improve new capabilities.SOCOM needs cheap solutions for future problems, as well as the problems facing operators right now. There are cheap, commercially available systems that could be updated with new software and hardware components depending on threats, countermeasures, and the needs of the operator. There are also specialized solutions that agile outfits can field quickly.Rising US defense technology company Anduril Industries, for instance, began its work with SOCOM attempting to solve immediate drone and counter-drone problems operators were facing, Anduril Chief Strategy Officer Chris Brose said at the recent symposium. For its caves and tunnels problem, SOCOM is seeking an already available solution that could make these missions easier and safer by incorporating emerging technology.

  • NASA Is Still Trying to Squeeze Some Life From Doomed Lunar Orbiter
    gizmodo.com
By Passant Rabie Published March 13, 2025 | Comments (3) | A mockup of NASA's Lunar Trailblazer, with the Moon in background. Lockheed Martin Space NASA is not one to let a good spacecraft go to waste. For nearly two weeks, the space agency has been trying to reestablish communications with a recently launched satellite that was originally headed toward the Moon. Lunar Trailblazer launched on February 26 on board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with the aim of entering lunar orbit and gathering data on the state of water on the Moon. Despite successfully deploying from the rocket, the spacecraft began experiencing trouble with its power system shortly after reaching space. The next day, communication with Trailblazer was lost. Since then, NASA has been trying to communicate with its spacecraft. Although Lunar Trailblazer will not be able to carry out its original mission, the space agency is working to find alternative options for the spacecraft. Based on telemetry before the loss of signal last week and ground-based radar data collected March 2, the team believes the spacecraft is spinning slowly in a low-power state, NASA wrote in an update on March 4. They will continue to monitor for signals should the spacecraft orientation change to where the solar panels receive more sunlight, increasing their output to support higher-power operations and communication. The team keeps sending commands to the spacecraft through NASAs Deep Space Network, while other ground-based radio stations volunteer to listen for a signal to return. The missions team is also going through the data that was initially collected to figure out the spacecrafts orientation and rotation, while using testbeds to study its behavior during boot-up and recovery options from a low-power state, according to NASA. Lunar Trailblazer is part of NASAs Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration (SIMPLEx) program, low-cost science spacecraft that ride-share with other missions. To maintain the lower overall cost, SIMPLEx missions have a higher risk posture and less-stringent requirements for oversight and management, NASA wrote. SIMPLEx missions are supposed to be capped at $55 million, however, thecost of building and operating Lunar Trailblazer reached $94 million, according to The New York Times.Whether it was overpriced or not, NASA is not giving up on its satellite. NASA sends up high-risk, high-reward missions like Lunar Trailblazer to do incredible science at a lower cost, and the team truly encapsulates the NASA innovative spirit, Nicky Fox, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA, said in a statement. If anyone can bring Lunar Trailblazer back, it is them.
