  • A Cantilevered Home in Austin Embraces Its Natural Landscape
    design-milk.com
Nestled amidst the lush landscape of rolling hills and live oak trees in West Austin, Texas, the Westview Residence by Alterstudio Architecture delivers thoughtful design and environmental sensitivity. Situated on a steeply sloped lot at the end of a cul-de-sac, this home redefines the relationship between architecture and nature by embracing the challenges of its site rather than imposing upon it.A defining feature of the property is a meandering seasonal creek that carves its way through a grove of protected trees. Rather than viewing this natural formation as an obstacle, the architects used it as a central design element, shaping the layout of the home to seamlessly integrate with the existing landscape. The result is a striking composition of masonry structures positioned on either side of the ravine, with a grand living space bridging the two halves as it cantilevers over the occasional stream. This architectural arrangement does more than simply respond to the land it creates a sense of seclusion amidst a densely developed neighborhood. The residence establishes its own private retreat, visually extending its natural surroundings to evoke an atmosphere of tranquility. The spatial arrangement encourages a fluid transition between the indoors and outdoors, with rooms that serve as intermediary spaces, blurring the distinction between built form and nature.A minimalist rectangular swimming pool feels as if its floating amongst a sea of trees on two sides. The three volumes wrap around the pool creating a courtyard with privacy from nearby homes, while the floor-to-ceiling windows allow the occupants views from each structure.Inside, the residence exudes warmth and refinement, featuring oak-clad ceilings and floors that contrast with robust brick walls. The masonry, chosen for its rugged texture and historical character, adds depth and dimension to the home, interacting dynamically with natural light throughout the day. Large openings invite sunlight to permeate the space, fostering a connection to the ever-changing outdoor environment. The black kitchen cabinets and details throughout the interior juxtapose the cream-colored bricks and warm wood surfaces for a balanced aesthetic that feels inviting and cozy. For more information on the Westview Residence or Alterstudio Architecture, visit alterstudio.net.Photography by Casey Dunn.

  • This Kitchen Sink Reinvents Everything You Thought a Sink Should Offer
    design-milk.com
You might not think of your kitchen sink as an area for innovation, but the Chinese company Boelon thinks differently. Its new Luxury Kitchen Sink goes a whole lot further than simply offering a faucet and a basin, and it does so in some ways that could be genuinely helpful or more convenient than whatever your kitchen sink has to offer right now.The Luxury Kitchen Sink starts by redesigning the basics of what a kitchen sink should offer. It has a tall arched faucet thats extendable for ease of use, but thats perhaps the most normal thing about it and you may not even use that main faucet as much as you would expect. Thats because the sink actually has various other water outlets for different uses.Theres a high-pressure cup washer like those youll see in a bar, a waterfall outlet, and even a so-called water column outlet. Theres also a purified water dispenser that you can use to fill up a glass of clean water, though an actual purifier is not included. You can switch between all of these different modes with a series of buttons on the rear of the sink, making it easy to use whatever mode you need in the moment. The Luxury Kitchen Sink also replaces the traditional temperature-adjusting handle with a large dial that has a display built into it, allowing you to see how hot or cold you have the temperature set. And the sink does away with the need to reach into dirty dishwater to pull out the plug. It has a second dial that adjusts the drainage level, and youll simply turn that to either fully plug the sink, fully open it up, or somewhere in between. You can simply use the sink as a large basin, but there are also a number of attachments that fit neatly inside it for versatile uses, including a cutting board, a draining basket, and even a smaller standard basin, all of which fit inside the main basin. Not only is the sink high-tech, it comes with a sleek, minimalist design. The sink is made from stainless steel with a custom nano coating that makes it more durable and easier to clean, and it has accent lighting running along the rear where all of the controls are, which helps make it look even more modern. For more information about the Luxury Kitchen Sink, visit boelon.com.

  • Biting Edge Brings Good Design to Our Four Legged Friends
    design-milk.com
Biting Edge brings beautiful design to dogs and humans alike. Multifunctional, stylish, and fun, your furry friends may not be fully able to appreciate the sleek design and storage solutions of the Biting Edge lineup, but you will. Minimalist aesthetics meet sustainable pet design, fully made in the Europe and with high-quality, non-toxic materials. Modular and chic, Biting Edge is smart storage for everyone in the family.Good design considers every size and shape, individual users requiring different solutions. Ergonomic concerns are essential in pet design, even the same animal requiring different height needs over time. Biting Edge has thought of it all, practical and food storage concerns top of mind for the two creators of the brand. Sisters who left their respective jobs of designer and entrepreneur, Ivana and Tamara Petrua worked for three years, funneling their passion for dogs and design into one elegant collection.Dogs and their owners needs were the focus of our design process, says Biting Edge head designer and co-founder Tamara Petrua. But it had to meet rigorous criteria that we set out both as dog owners and design professionals. This shows clearly in all aspects of usability, aptly considering scenarios and needs that only true dog lovers would know.Eat Prey Love is a dog feeder with airtight, integrated storage to hold food, treats, or other pet accessories. The bowls easily slide into the grooves on the front to adjust for your pets specific size.By The Way is a modular wall shelf that holds your pets leash, toys, and additional essentials.A large, intuitive handle for the lid and adjustable feeding bowls are just some of the features in Beauty For The Beast, a home-like structure that also includes a stainless steel dry food compartment and toy storage as well.Bowls And Flowers is a wall-mounted dog feeder and vertical planter with an adjustable design offering endless possibilities. One Bite Stand is a solid wood dog feeder with integrated storage on the sides to hold food or treats.Thoughtful, clean, and made with the highest quality materials, the Biting Edge line extends beyond the pet. Anyone, regardless of how you might use the storage components and multi-functionality of the piece, could use a sweet little home for their dry goods or small items. Were also thinking this would be great for an upscale workshop or kitchen, the Scandinavian influences allowing it to blend seamlessly with existing furniture. If the rest of our homes are carefully curated, why should pet furniture look any different?Tamara shares that incorporating practicality and food-safety in an aesthetically pleasing design was quite a challenge: We wanted more than just eye-catching interior gadgets. The designs had a number of variations, mainly to make them easily adjustable for different dogs and to smoothly incorporate the airtight food compartment using only materials that are both certified food-safe and environmentally friendly. The construction also had to be convenient so we can ship the product anywhere in the world. True sustainability considers the product at every phase of its life cycle, a standard designers have an obligation to consider in a period of unstoppable consumption. Biting Edge has done their job to consider how their products will stand the test of time, offering solutions that will grow and change with families needs, years of care and love housed in ceramic and birch. To learn more about Biting Edge and their range of pet products, please visit biting-edge.com.Photography courtesy of Biting Edge.

  • White Mineral Finishes Unite Three Centuries of Architecture
    design-milk.com
The renovation of Sutton House in Sutton, Qubec by Pelletier de Fontenay does not just preserve history it transmutes it through its use of white cementitious coating, turning what was once a disparate collection of additions into a unified sculptural presence in the landscape. Rather than following the conventional preservation playbook of emphasizing material contrasts between old and new, the architects developed custom white mineral finishes that unify the buildings multiple iterations while allowing the underlying textures to remain legible. This approach creates a palimpsest effect where, like an ancient manuscript that has been written over, the original text still shows through. The decision to use hemp insulation a bio-sourced material known for its breathability and humidity control represents a marriage of traditional building techniques with contemporary environmental consciousness. This approach extends to the interior, where a sconce made of repurposed timber from the original structure serves as both functional lighting and a testament to the buildings history. The additions deep walls and thick roof echo the primitive heaviness of the original structure, while three distinct blocks frame views of the landscape. The house employs passive strategies that would have been familiar to the original builders thermal mass, natural ventilation, solar orientation but updates them with contemporary technology. The limestone flooring sourced from local quarries serves dual purposes it connects the building to its regional context while acting as thermal mass for passive solar heating. The designers expand by saying: The stepped configuration of the ground floor also helped lower the buildings overall footprint, while creating a natural airflow between the spaces towards the upper level. In the summer, this helps to naturally ventilate the common spaces, while in winter, the warm air is captured and redistributed through the house via the high-efficiency heat recovery mechanical system.Photography by James Brittain.

  • The 2025 Color Collection by 3form Reflects the Richness of Human Emotion
    design-milk.com
The 2025 Color Collection from 3form celebrates the emotional power of hues and how they can transform any space. By tapping into the different feelings associated with tints, the material solutions provider curated a timeless line rather than a trend-driven grouping that would be dated after a few seasons. It was exciting to think about color through these different lenses, says Ryan Smith, chief creative officer at 3form. We looked at words associated with each of these colors and imagined the spaces that they might exist in.Jewel and BuoyantJewel and BuoyantBy mixing films, the 3form team was able to develop a range that complements their existing 250-color portfolio, with the introduction of four new vivid hues. The focus was on adding tertiary tones to balance the selected primary hues. This new palette offers designers endless possibilities for their projects.Pharaoh and LemonPharaoh and LemonThe collection represents five key categories of emotion and a total of 10 curated colors. Each pairing includes a saturated color and a softer, muted partner shade. Jewel is a lush teal, while Buoyant is a serene green. These two verdant tints capture the soothing, restorative essence of nature. Pharaoh, a radiant gold, and Lemon, a luminous soft yellow, are all about vibrant energy. They make a joyous and optimistic duo.Vermillion and SunstoneVermillion and SunstoneVermillion is a bold red-orange, while Sunstone is the invigorating yet tempered counterpart. Both of these colors ignite creativity in any room. The purple hues highlight sophistication and elegance. Winterberry is reminiscent of ripened fruit, and its companion Teaberry evokes quiet luxury. Two neutrals can be used to ground spaces and provide balance. Velvety Tourmaline, placed with airy Ivory, offers reassurance and brings balance to interiors.Winterberry and TeaberryWinterberry and TeaberryAvailable in three signature materials, they are ideal for application across industries, from hospitality to healthcare. Varia panels have a sandstone finish on the front and back, ideal for floor-to-ceiling or half walls. The popular 3form Laminated Glass is offered in Low-Iron or Clear-Float finishes, suitable for room dividers and decorative wall features. Chroma, with vellum finish, is perfect for backlit applications like reception desks, tabletops, or shelves.Tourmaline and IvoryThe companys fifth yearly color line allows specifiers to shape environments with expressive, mood-driven shades. In this day and age, finding a company that champions timeless craftsmanship and embodies the traditional values of furniture-making can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Wellsbuilt is that rare gem a Rhode Island-based woodworking studio where lasting design is brought to life through meticulous attention to detail. Whether its a sleek stool inspired by mid-century aesthetics or custom built cabinetry tailored to your space, Wellsbuilts pieces are a testament to the enduring art of true craftsmanship.Henderson CredenzaWells journey began at a young age when his stepfather, a carpenter, handed down a few woodworking machines to create a rudimentary workshop in the basement of his apartment. It was really exciting to have my own space dedicated to learning the craft, Wells reflects. Over time he honed his skills, drawing inspiration from Shaker, mid-century, and Scandinavian design traditions. His work embodies clean and simple designs with thoughtful details to spark interest. Finding the balance between traditional design components with embellishments that make it feel fresh and unique is always the goal, he says.Mullins CredenzaMullins CredenzaMorales Coffee TableWells first piece, the Morales Coffee Table, was born from a clients request for a toddler-friendly design without sharp corners or edges. • The Limn Collection Merges Japanese Ceramics With Modern Geometry
    design-milk.com
Nerikomi is a Japanese pottery technique that involves combining layers of colored clay to produce distinct patterns. Jessica Rust, having immersed herself in the world of Nerikomi for five years, presents the Limn collection. Featuring lighting, a drink table, and vases all built by hand, this collection considers craft synonymous with high art.Limn Vast TallThe Limn Vase, available in short, tall, or fat, explores the unique color variations that are produced through the Nerikomi process. Alike to threads in a loom, the natural variations and thicknesses of the clay produce striations in color, blown brilliantly into their final color in the kiln. These vases, no two alike and taking weeks to complete, celebrate the organic nature of humane creation.Limn Vase FatLimn Triangle LampLighting also central to the collection, the Limn Triangle Lamp makes a bold statement with the longer slabbed Nerikomi work on the bottom, descending into smaller slabs as we travel up the piece. Nerikomi is famously prone to cracking, a necessary hazard of the delicate technique. At such a large scale, these works are as much an object of beauty as well as the artists mastery of the material.Limn Triangle LampHand-made Nerikomi Table LampBolder, and even bigger, the Hand-made Nerikomi Table Lamp comes in two colorways, a black and a cobalt blue. The bases are speckled with a multitude of colors, a symphony of color translating elegantly to the graphic shades. Brilliant hues create high contrast, a delight for the eye and a celebration of the time and effort that goes into Nerikomi work.Hand-made Nerikomi Table LampLimn Drink TableGraphic planes filled with rich pattern are central to the Limn collection. The Limn Drink Table, a favorite of Rusts, is tall, vibrant, and circular, blending angular vertices with rounded solidity. I started playing with triangles and found myself completely obsessed with pushing this basic shape into new territory, shares the artist. When I combined that with my take on Nerikomi, something unexpected and exciting emerged. Each piece has patterns that flow through the entire form its not just surface decoration, its part of the DNA.Limn Drink TableLimn Drink TableJessica Rust, of Rust Designs, is unafraid to embrace the meditative, allowing the organic nature of the clay to speak for itself. Layer upon later create solid structures, fascinating expressions in porcelain that are delightful in their deviation from the norm. Reflection and observation are central to her work, slow and deliberate. In a drop ship world, this is a handwrought gift a purposeful resistance to urgency.Limn Drink TableTo learn more about the Limn collection by Jessica Rust, please visit rustdesigns.com.Photography courtesy of Jessica Rust.

  • SoundPeats PearlClip Pro Earbuds Let You Hear the World Around You
    design-milk.com
If youre in the market for a pair of open-ear earbuds that dont break the bank, the new SoundPeats PearlClip Pro might be the perfect fit.Open-ear headphones have been growing in popularity, and its easy to see why. Unlike traditional earbuds that seal off your ear canal, open-ear designs let you stay aware of your surroundings while still enjoying your audio. These earbuds come in various form factors some, like the Nothing Ear (open), loop over the top of your ears, while others, like the SoundPeats PearlClip Pro, clip onto your outer ear much like clip-on earrings.Despite their budget-friendly price, the PearlClip Pro earbuds pack some impressive features. They boast 12mm dual-magnet drivers designed to enhance audio quality, provide up to six hours of continuous playback, and offer an additional 18 hours with the charging case. One common drawback of open-ear designs is their limited bass and high-frequency detail, as they dont form a seal in the ear canal. SoundPeats aims to address this by positioning the drivers directly over the ear canal for a more direct audio response. While real-world performance remains to be seen, this design choice could offer improved sound quality. For many users, top-tier audio fidelity isnt the primary concern. These earbuds are ideal for listening to audiobooks or podcasts while staying aware of your environment whether youre jogging, commuting, or working in a shared space. The PearlClip Pro isnt the first to adopt this form factor; the Bose Ultra Open earbuds follow a similar design, albeit with a more angular aesthetic and a significantly higher price tag.SoundPeats has been consistently improving its audio products, and while the PearlClip Pro may not be the most premium option, they offer solid value. Made primarily of plastic, they maintain a sleek look within their price range. While they are only available in gray, the neutral color ensures versatility. To learn more about the SoundPeats PearlClip Pro earbuds or to purchase for $59.99, visit SoundPeats or Amazon. This post contains affiliate links, so if you make a purchase from an affiliate link, we earn a commission. • ENESS Creates Inflatable Forest Dancer Exhibition That Evokes Happiness
    design-milk.com
Dubais Quoz Arts Festival witnessed an extraordinary artistic intervention as ENESS, the acclaimed Melbourne-based art and design studio, transformed the faade of the Concrete building with a monumental illuminated installation made of inflatables. As part of the Forest Dancer exhibition an extension of FRAME Awards Exhibition of the Year 2024, Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness the 29.5-foot-tall archway captivated audiences, happily merging art with architecture. This ephemeral yet striking transformation reimagined the renowned venue, originally designed by Rem Koolhaass OMA, through a series of interconnected, soft-edged arches. These oversized forms played with scale and perspective, their fleshy, organic curves appearing both solid and transient. The result was a thought-provoking dialogue between the built environment and the temporary nature of artistic expression. As visitors moved through the cascading arches, they encountered intricate material details, including a pixelated motif embedded with oversized floral prints in an 8-bit aesthetic. This fusion of digital and tactile elements reflected ENESSs innovative approach to creating immersive experiences that challenge traditional perceptions of space and design. Our work extends beyond galleries and museums; it integrates into the fabric of everyday life, says ENESS founder Nimrod Weis. By engaging directly with the existing architecture, we craft pieces that converse with their surroundings while standing as independent artworks. At the heart of the broader Forest Dancer exhibition stood a towering 26-foot-tall figure, serving as an emblem of connection and play. The installations within the exhibition, including Whispering Mountains and Stick Insects, fostered interaction, encouraging visitors to engage with art in ways that sparked creativity and connection among strangers, friends, and families alike. One of the most enchanting aspects of the exhibition was the skirt-like dome enveloping an interactive space where visitors could recline on LED-eyed beanbags, immersed in an ever-shifting landscape of light and sound. This sensory haven encouraged introspection and a respite from the digital noise that dominates contemporary life.Spanning over 6,458 square feet, the exhibition showcases the crucial role of creativity in countering societal challenges, from the isolating effects of technology to global tensions. By situating art as a vehicle for human connection and contemplation, ENESS delivered a compelling statement on the necessity of shared experiences in todays world. The Quoz Arts Festival, a vibrant annual event set in Alserkal Avenues artistic district, served as the perfect backdrop for this vibrant installation. With Forest Dancer as its centerpiece, ENESS reinforced the power of public art to inspire and unite communities, urging audiences to embrace creative expression in their own lives.Following its success in Dubai, Forest Dancer and its accompanying exhibition Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness continue to traverse the globe, bringing their dynamic fusion of art, light, and interactivity to audiences in multiple countries. For more information on ENESS, visit eness.com.Photography by Ismail Noor, Seeing Things Studio.

  • The Lockly Styla Is a Tech-Heavy Smart Lock That Actually Looks Good
    design-milk.com
Smart locks offer convenience and security, but many models lean too much into a gadget-like aesthetic rather than home hardware that can blend into the rest of their environment. Fortunately, manufacturers are beginning to prioritize design without compromising functionality. The new Lockly Styla takes this a step further, delivering a feature-rich smart lock with a sleek, modern look.Unlike traditional smart locks, the Lockly Styla is an all-in-one handlebar lock packed with advanced technology. Its tall, black metallic build gives it a high-end appearance, though its size may be more reminiscent of commercial security hardware than a standard residential lock. Despite this, its modern aesthetic ensures it will complement a variety of home styles while maintaining a premium look and feel.Calling the Lockly Styla a smart lock feels like an understatement. To be clear, it is a smart lock, and it offers a range of technologies that allow you to unlock and lock your door in the most convenient way possible. That means that you could unlock your door using the built-in 3D fingerprint sensor, a key fob through the built-in RFID reader, or with a good old-fashioned physical key. Theres also a pin pad that randomizes the placement of the digits so that its hard for others to tell where on the pin pad you commonly press and guess your pin code.Beyond its locking capabilities, the Styla doubles as a security camera. Equipped with a 2K camera with color night vision, a motion sensor, and two-way audio, it provides enhanced security monitoring for your entryway. It also functions as a doorbell, featuring a built-in button that rings a chime and sends notifications when pressed. While the presence of multiple buttons might cause initial confusion for guests, the doorbell is marked with a bell icon for easy identification. The interior portion of the device looks similar but without any of the tech.Unlike traditional locks with a latch, the Styla uses a ball catch mechanism to keep the door closed. This design allows users to open and close the door with a simple push or pull when the lock is disengaged, adding to its convenience. The Styla is battery-powered and rechargeable through a USB-C connector. Lockly claims that it will last 1.5 years in offline mode or 10 months when its connected to your network. Given the extensive technology integrated into the device, real-world performance will be interesting to evaluate once user reviews become available. Its refreshing to see companies like Lockly bridge the gap between functionality and aesthetics. Often, smart home devices prioritize either technology or design, but the Styla successfully merges both. For those willing to embrace a feature-rich device at their front door, it offers a compelling balance of security, convenience, and style. The Lockly Styla is priced at $699.99 and will be available in matte black, gray, and gold finishes. With multiple color options, homeowners can choose a finish that best matches their existing hardware. Lockly plans to launch the device in Q3 2025 via lockly.com.

  • The Ripples Collection Challenges Your Perception of Reality
    design-milk.com
Following the warm reception of his Zig/Zag collection, Bo Zhang is back with another mind-bending series designed to make you question everything you see. The new Ripples collection takes Zhangs fascination with optical illusions and shifting perspectives even further this time, in the form of hexagonal trays. By playing with perception and color, Zhang continues his exploration of interactive design, where objects go beyond their utilitarian roles to become captivating visual art.Zhang, an artist and chief designer of Desz Office, was inspired by the phenomenon of moir, where subtle shifts in perspective create the illusion of ever-changing movement where none exists. I believe the change will bring new value to design the new value from the characteristics of vision, surface, and color, Zhang explains. In the Ripples collection, this sense of change is evoked by the viewers shifting vantage point. The Ripples trays feature a folded form that presents as one color from one angle and another color from a different angle. By merging color and spatial structure, Zhang challenges our understanding of space what initially seems like a single color flat tray reveals itself to be two-toned with a folded surface. This unexpected moment of discovery is what makes the collection so unique, offering a playful and interactive approach to home tableware and decor. I hope users will feel intrigued, surprised, and even a little amazed when they see my designs, Zhang shares earnestly. My goal is to bring more happiness to their lives through new design.Zhangs approach to design is deeply rooted in creating moments of surprise and interaction. Like much of his previous work the Stretch Color Vases, the Vase NA 2.0 collection, and the Rosy Time series the Ripples collection invites curiosity, encouraging users to engage with it from multiple perspectives. This playful experimentation with color and form transforms ordinary tableware into an experience, sparking joy and wonder in otherwise mundane moments. To learn more about the Ripples collection, visit deszoffice.com.

  • Filippo Mambrettis Stilo75 Pen Holder Encourages Correspondence
    design-milk.com
Whens the last time you sat down and wrote a letter? Putting actual pen to paper could be a novelty for some of us, so far removed from the writing of a paper letter in a screen-based, buttonless world. In an era of increased modernization and isolation, the heart in a handwritten note cannot be understated. To promote these age-old practices, Filippo Mambretti presents the Stilo75 Pen Holder, a take on a desk organizer that has specific spots for two pens, some cards, and other small desk items. Mambretti designed the object as a nod to the 75th anniversary of the Pozzi & Verga carpentry workshop.Organic, sculptural, with heavily rounded elements that instill a sense of calm, the Stilo75 is crafted from a singular piece of wood, with a contrasting wood inlay for the pen holes. A catchall for small desk objects, this pen holder would look just as stylish on a walnut live edge piece as a polished marble countertop. The inlay allows the piece to match with multiple finishes and colors of wood, the more red tones of the outer wood offering contrast to the darker purples of the walnut. The interior edge is tilted inwards at one degree, a slight but beautiful detail that ensures your utensils wont roll out. Every degree and vertex has been carefully considered, balancing elegance with geometry.Filippo Mambretti was born in Como, Italy, and grew up in close contact with his grandparents, who informed his worldview from a young age. Mambretti is a multidisciplinary designer, earning degrees in interior and furniture design from Milan Polytechnic. Working with product and architectural companies from across the world has taught him the value of a functional, beautiful object, which he carries into everything he designs. The heart of his Italian heritage is strong here, bringing craftsmanship and tradition into the spotlight. If youve made it this far, take this as your sign to sit down and write a loved one a letter you wont regret it.To learn more about the Stilo75 Pen Holder, visit filippomambretti.com.

  • AAHA Studio Redefines a Forever Home on Oceano Drive
    design-milk.com
The path of residential mobility where individuals move to re-optimize as their needs change, budgets increase, and families grow has seen a variety of challenges to the traditional trajectory. Homeowners used to migrate from starter to forever home, sometimes downsizing or simplifying towards the end of their housing career. But this Oceano Drive Residence, located along the meandering streets of Los Angeless Brentwood neighborhood, tells a story of thoughtful tailoring over time where walls were unhemmed and spaces given slack before being stitched back together. Family owned and operated AAHA Studio worked closely with the homeowners, one of whom is an interior designer by trade, on the structures latest update for a bespoke fit.As a long-term, custom-built family home, the residence has seen its fair share of growing pains and alterations since its construction prior to the new millennium. The clients now require spaces more conducive to hosting several generations for an assortment of gatherings indoors and outside. With some 4,500 square feet, the two-story structure boasts plenty of rooms that offer varying degrees of privacy or openness.Family members may find alone time in any one of the six unique bedrooms, five full bathrooms, powder room, or hide away in the laundry. But the houses grand gesture, facilitated by two oversized pocketing doors, is the great room formed from a generous kitchen, dining area, and living room all of which extend out onto the patio where guests can enjoy entertainment al fresco adjacent to the inground pool.Buttoning up the interior architecture required significant space planning by AAHA Studio. The design team reconsidered existing programming such as the kitchen, living room, fireplaces, laundry, former maids bathroom, and staircases. And they spared no surface from consideration as they took down drop ceilings throughout to maximize ceiling heights. Other updates include everything from new appliances to additional fenestration to secondary bathroom finishes and fixtures. We love the reoriented layout of spaces. Upon our first visit to the house, we felt that the kitchen should be on the opposite end of the house. With the way people live and entertain now, the kitchen is the heart of the overall space, the studio shares. We had to lose a fireplace to achieve this, but it was worth it and drives home the concept that the kitchen is the new hearth of the home!AAHA Studio capitalized on the industrys trend towards light oak and black steel at the time thoughtfully shifting away from the preexisting dark wood, which made the smaller spaces feel so heavy. It would be remiss to frame the aesthetic upgrades as merely superficial given the complexity of the project. The completed customization is far more robust: the kitchen is re-centered in plan with a new island and cabinetry; the demolition of interior walls facilitates better flow and an abundance of daylight; glass pocket doors slide in place of French doors for malleable layouts; streamlined plumbing allows for better bathing spaces; and a modernized front stair design folds millwork from both levels into one cohesive circulation narrative. The extensive makeover is expressed with an exterior facelift as well. Changes to the facades condition complement the breathier, smarter fenestration with an updated color palette, removal of unnecessary details like shutters and non-structural columns, painted wood cladding, smooth refreshed stucco, new asphalt shingles accentuated by simple eave details, and an updated brick walkway leading from the driveway to the front door.We came on to this project to rethink our clients existing residence, the studio adds. The addition of these elements and how they were installed make a world of difference in how you experience the space. To view AAHA Studios full portfolio, visit aaha.studio.Photography by Amy Bartlam.

  • The AVOLT Square 1 Blends Swedish Design With the Humble Power Brick
    design-milk.com
While companies like Apple clearly put effort into the design of their new products, that ethos doesnt necessarily always exist in the companies that build more utilitarian electronics products, like power strips. What if, however, the focus on modern design existed inall areas of modern tech? That is the goal of AVOLT. The AVOLT Square 1 is a power solution that blends Scandinavian design with function. At its core the Square 1 serves a purpose. Its basically a cube with power outputs on each side, including three standard US power outputs and two USB-C ports that support power delivery at up to 30 watts. In other words, its perfect for those spots in which you need to be able to power a number of devices at once.It also has a 5.9-foot flexible cable that will allow you to plug it in at nearby power outlets without too much restriction on where you can place it.On top of its functionality, its also built for modern design. The AVOLT Square 1 is a minimalistic-looking cube that comes in one of seven modern colors, including Stockholm Black, Gotland Grey, Shark Blue, New Pink, Oak Green, Nomad Sand, and Opal White.Even better is the fact that it has some flexibility in placement. It comes with a mounting plate that can attach to a wall or other surface, allowing you to magnetically attach the Square 1 to the plate without having to mount clips or Velcro for that placement. The Square 1 has been hailed for its great design, despite its arguably basic function. In fact, the device has won the Red Dot Design Award and the Swedish Design Prize. • Frank in the Loom Exhibition Presents Altruism in Design
    design-milk.com
Svenskt Tenn recently launched Frank in the Loom at Stockholm Design Week, an exhibition that cleverly merges sustainability, handcraft, and theory. Featured are a collection of limited-edition rag rugs, all carefully constructed from Josef Frank fabrics and double-woven into floor coverings, creating a dynamic, colorful grid. Inspired by Margit Thorns Schackruta rug, the design pays homage to a Svenskt Tenn classic with a modern, sustainable flair. Woven by Vandra Rugs in Ukraine, this collection is a testament of the resilience of textile culture, be it in fabric or family. The handwoven rag rug has always been a symbol of warmth, traditionally taking scraps of worn out woolen garments and weaving them into layers of color and texture, functional art. Created for centuries, much is unknown about their history, having been overlooked as a womens craft and a sign of poverty, instead of a sign of ingenuity and adaptation. After a spike of popularity around the Arts and Crafts movement, and the same around the late sixties to early seventies, rag rugs are again surging on to the scene as a response to the hyperindustrialization of the modern era.In this thoughtful exhibition, Frank in the Loom brings the process to you featuring a loom with a runner in progress in the center of the exhibition. Supported by many historic examples of Franks furniture, the method of production is the centerpiece here. Upcycled Josef Frank textiles are blended with similar linens to create a solid yet soft experience, flecks of color peeking out through the folds. We can see samples of travel fabrics from Franks patterned textiles, Delhi, Brazil, and Green Birds, serving as reminders of the origin of the material, and how we can better utilize existing materials in new and exciting ways.Karin Sdergren, Svenskt Tenns Head Curator explains, The rug takes center stage in Svenskt Tenns spring exhibition. In the stores Strandvgen Gallery, weve created a clean, minimalist presentation that highlights the artistry of weaving. The exhibition delves into the craftsmanship at Vandra Rugs atelier in Ukraine, where the new Frank in the Loom rugs are meticulously woven, and explores how Josef Franks bold, imaginative patterns are transformed into Svenskt Tenns signature double-woven rugs.Josef Frank was an early pioneer of the Viennese Modernist movement, shaping generations of design and promoting a sense of humanity in the process. Refusing to be limited by convention, he found traditional Modernism to be puritanical, homogenous, and boring. Since childhood, he had an intense interest in botany, and by the 1920s had created an entirely new flora of his own, combining features from his favorite plants to create lush, imaginary landscapes. Arguably one of the most important Austrian-Swedish interior designers, this innate sense of wonder certainly contributed to his vision of harmony within the home.Svenskt Tenn proudly preserves the Frank catalogue, an astounding and extensive collection of his interiors, furniture, and drawings. In total 3,000 sketches as well as 250 prints signed by Josef Frank are kept in Svenskt Tenns archive. Celebrating their centennial last year, Svenskt Tenn has adopted a humanist approach for over one hundred years, dedicated to comfort, warmth, and color.Vandra Rugs proudly preserve the time-consuming, intricate, and demanding tradition of handwoven rugs with their beautiful catalogue of luxury pieces, all made to order. The atelier employs mostly women, as weavers and in management positions as well. They regularly organize weaving classes, not only for beginners to get into the industry, but for those already working to develop their skills further. By creating jobs and standing by their workers during political instability, they foster an environment of true luxury, created under conditions of care and respect for the ancient tradition. To learn more about the Frank in the Loom exhibition, which runs through May 12, 2025, visit svenskttenn.com.Photography by Erik Djurklou, courtesy of Svenskt Tenn.

  • hm-LI Studios Expressive Designs Are a Masterclass in Balancing Art + Utility
    design-milk.com
Wood may be one of the most ubiquitous materials in furniture design, but in the hands of Haoming Li, it becomes a limitless canvas for personal expression. In her latest trio of collections for hm-LI Studio, Li reimagines this humble material through three distinctive lenses: the precision and fluidity of bent wood construction in the Weaving Chair Series, the calligraphy-inspired elegance of the Le Sourire Chair, and the interplay of curves and grid patterns in the Curl Cabinet Series. Each piece transforms wood into a storytelling medium, showcasing how creativity can breathe new life into even the most familiar materials.Whether its a chair, stool, or cabinet, Lis designs are deeply personal, rooted in her background, heritage, or even the mundane moments of everyday life. The Weaving Chair Series, for instance, was inspired by an unexpected moment: folding and playing with a receipt while waiting in line. This idea of transforming flatness into volume became the core of the piece, Li explains. I believe that design should be approachable yet profound, allowing people to feel a sense of connection with the piece.Crafted using bent wood construction and a unique mortise-and-tenon joinery system, the Weaving Chair invites intimate interaction, as users assemble the piece themselves before use. Its design also pays homage to Lis Eastern roots, embodying the Chinese concept of (a traditional furniture structural element). Available in a variety of finishes and forms including dining chairs, benches, and stools in both adult and childrens sizes, the Weaving Chair has already won a prestigious Red Dot Award 2024 for its innovative design. The Le Sourire Chair Series also draws from Lis cultural heritage, highlighting the elegance and artistry of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. The chairs fluid, organic forms echo the graceful brushstrokes of calligraphy, with lines tapering into delicate ends that mimic the lift of a brush. Silk, a revered material in ancient China for its strength and refinement, also inspired the chairs folded curves, imbuing it with a sense of timeless sophistication. To achieve the seamless connection between the backrest and seat, Li utilized CNC solid wood carving technology, creating a gravity-defying floating effect that lends a lightness to the solid wood construction. The chairs are available with high backs for support, as well as lower backed or backless options that can serve as benches or side tables. Offered in a range of finishes, including the traditional Chinese lacquer, the Le Sourire Chair Series bridges past and present through its expressive form.Continuing her exploration of wood forms, Lis Curl Cabinet Series combines curved surfaces with a woven grid pattern. Designed with modularity in mind, the collection adapts to any space, offering configurations that range from expansive sideboards to compact bedside tables. Multi-directional doors enhance user interaction and provide flexible storage solutions. With its subtle curves of the door fronts and the modern grid detailing, the Curl Cabinet Series transforms into a striking focal point in any room.Through her collections, Li demonstrates that her designs are an expression of identity and experience. For me, design is not just about form; its about creating something that resonates on a personal level, she shares. I draw a lot of inspiration from my upbringing and my experiences working in both large-scale architecture and intimate furniture design. With the Weaving Chair, Le Sourire Chair, and Curl Cabinet Series, Li continues to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, crafting pieces that invite connection and reflection while redefining what wood furniture can be.To learn about Haoming Lis latest collections, visit hm-li.com.Photography by hm-LI Studio via v2com.

  • Jordana Maisie Launches JMDW: A Workshop Exploring the Clean + Dirty
    design-milk.com
Jordana Maisie is no stranger to exploring the relationship between body and space. Her work over the years has ranged from designing immersive retail environments that shape the way people experience a space to large-scale public installations that challenge perception and interaction. Now, in the next evolution of her eponymous design studio, she is expanding her practice with Jordana Maisie Design Workshop (JMDW) a parallel initiative dedicated to material exploration, experimental craftsmanship, and a focus on what she calls clean and dirty spaces. The BarWhile most designers follow a linear process, Maisie embraces a cyclical approach, one where exploration, iteration, and material engagement are continuously intertwined. At JMDW, the act of thinking and making are inseparable, shares Maisie. The materials, tools, and environment provoke new ways of understanding, while the ideas themselves guide the craft. This cyclical relationship is where our process truly comes to life, transforming abstract concepts into tactile, immersive experiences.U SeatThis philosophy is central to JMDW, where Maisie explores a dual approach to design and fabrication through the lens of clean and dirty spaces. In this perspective, clean spaces are pragmatic, requiring designs that are precise, functional, and aesthetically engaging. Dirty spaces, on the other hand, are rooted in materiality and the experimentation of those materials in the goal to create bespoke furniture, lighting, and objects that blur the line between art and design. Through this dynamic approach, JMDW will produce everything from small homewares to large-scale architectural works. To kick off this new chapter, Maisie is launching two inaugural collections, The Ash and Burl Collection and The Reliance Range. The Forrest Table and The Forrest ChairsThe Ash and Burl Collection offers a more recognizable take on traditional furniture typologies, but still with unexpected details and sculptural gestures. The series balances bold geometric forms with the organic, unpredictable beauty of live wood textures, creating pieces that feel familiar in material yet distinctly fresh and modern in form. The Forrest TableThe Forrest TableThe Stack LightThe Ripper StoolThe BarThe Reliance Range is a masterclass in challenging preconceptions of how furniture should look, feel, and function pushing beyond the expected to create something entirely new. Each piece in the collection is designed for shared experiences, encouraging collective use rather than solitary seating. By redefining sitting as a communal activity, Maisie introduces interdependent designs, where every component relies on the others for structural integrity.U SeatOutside OverpassWith JMDW, Maisie is carving out a niche space where design isnt just about creating objects but about reshaping the way experience them in a profoundly contemporary way. The Reliance Range embodies this radical thinking for more explorative, communal spaces, while The Ash and Burl Collection offers a refined take that feels at home in residential interiors.Inside OverpassBench SeatArc SeatAbstract CherryFallen FruitTo learn more about the Jordana Maisie Design Workshop and its latest collections, visit jordanamaisiedesign.works.

  • F5: Elizabeth Graziolo Talks Door Knockers, Sunsets + More
    design-milk.com
A career path to architecture unfolded for Elizabeth Graziolo when she was accepted into the architecture program at Cooper Union in New York City. At the time, she wasnt sure what she wanted to do, yet within a few months at the storied institution her course was set. After my first semester everything clicked, Graziolo says. I started seeing the world differently, from new perspectives, and I completely loved it.After graduation she joined the team at Cicognani Kalla, where Ann Kalla was an early and influential mentor. Kalla helped shape Graziolos understanding as she moved from theory to real-world design. As she honed her skills, Kallas guidance also prepared her for what women experience in the profession.Graziolo spent nearly two decades at Peter Pennoyer Architects, where she worked on a wide range of projects, from townhouse reconstructions to residential developments. Ready for her next challenge, she decided to venture out on her own and founded Yellow House Architects in 2020.Elizabeth Graziolo \\\ Photo: Joshua McHughAs a firm owner and leader, Graziolo strives to foster collaboration and create a space where staff members can freely share diverse points of view. With offices in Manhattan and Miami, the firm is noted for reviving landmark properties, uncovering the unique elements to bring them to light once again. No matter which city Graziolo is in at any given moment, she is ready to capture interesting things to enhance her own creative process. I dont use one specific method; I mix it up, she notes. I take lots of photos, doodle in my sketchbook, and collect objects or images that I find inspirational.Today, Elizabeth Graziolo joins us for Friday Five!Photos: Elizabeth Graziolo1. SunsetsThis slide captures the profound inspiration drawn from observing a sunset a reminder of natures ability to inform and elevate design. The photograph, taken with my iPhone from my apartment, encapsulates the vibrant, dynamic hues of the setting sun. These natural colors became the foundation for a mood board that guided a recent project. The warm, glowing tones inspired the selection of Beatrice Serres copper-skinned mirror, while the delicate raindrops on the windowpane influenced the choice of Lindsey Adelmans Knotty Bubbles chandelier. Finally, the fluidity and depth of the water informed the inclusion of De Gournays fish-themed wallpaper, completing a harmonious interplay between nature and design.Photo: Elizabeth Graziolo2. • Rent Out Art-Filled Residence at Saint Lucias Sugar Beach Resort
    design-milk.com
Nestled between the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Petit and Gros Pitons soaring volcanic plugs emerging along Saint Lucias increasingly popular Caribbean coastline Sugar Beach unfolds within a dense rainforest. The 100-acre resort comprises a wide variety of classically styled guest rooms, bungalows, and villas with light, bright, and breezy architectural details harkening back to the locales history as a sugar plantation. While the central restaurant, pool, and spa complex is defined by meticulously manicured lawns and picturesque fountains not to mention the beach most accommodations intimately populate along the steep mountainside. The views from these perches fully encapsulate the setting; the especially secluded and dramatically mountain-framed Pitons Bay.Joining this diverse offering is the brand-new Spice of Life residence. The sprawling 35,000-square-foot mansion opens up to the waterfront and a monumental infinity pool with nine grand en-suite bedrooms able to accommodate an impressive 18 guests. That said, its clever layout and the deft introduction of detailed finishes and furnishings render the spacious home-of-sorts comfortable enough for just two.Imbuing the sleek, light earth-toned residence with intriguing moments of color, pattern, and playfully recognizable iconography, is the strategically placed art: paintings, sculptures, and mixed media works even decorated sneakers sourced from international renowned Pop Art talents like Daniel Arsham and KAWS. The star of the show is the fully wall-integrated Iltar, Elliptical Glass installation by James Turrell which illuminates an extra-long dining space and the wider open-concept great room with its shifting palettes of layered and gradient hues. Also comprising pieces of varying scale and application by the likes of Yayoi Kusama, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Julian Opie, Pedro Reyes, Anish Kapoor, and Sue Fuller to just name a few the collection is the largest in Saint Lucia. Whether a smaller figurine or vessel that sits on a seamlessly built-in shelf or large-scale structural composition that takes pride of space in one of the suites; art is everywhere but somehow doesnt overpower. The main attraction here remains the scenic setting: verdant slopes descending into warm, dark turquoise waters. In true modernist style, the residence designed by Bermuda-based architecture practice Botelho Wood Architects has a striking rectilinear profile articulated in a dynamic composition of intersecting massings; wings containing individual suites with meandering bathrooms and large walk-in closets all retaining the same cohesive array of finishes and color. These volumes also pedestal deep second level terraces covered in lattice-form overhangs. Operable floor-to-ceiling window walls achieve that oh-so-modernist of principles: establishing a near-inconspicuous connection between indoor and outdoor space.Local materials various types of wood and stone carry across the residence, from the cladding of interior walls to the fabrication of sized-to-fit custom furnishings coalescing as the optimal backdrop for the art. Equally sustainable components include solar power, an innovative water management system, and a gray water tank installation. The residences non-monolithic configuration is also conducive to the climate with carefully introduced breezeways filtering in cool air where necessary.Though very much in their own resort-within-a-resort, Spice of Life guests still benefit from all of Sugar Beachs amenities. Of note is the serene treehouse-esque Rainforest Spa. If time spent simply immersed in this grand yet domestic environment wasnt enough, theyll undoubtedly be spoiled for choice. Though there are several top-ranked restaurants within the resort, Spice of Life guests indulge in carefully planned meals catered on site. What: Spice of Life residence at Sugar Beach ResortWhere: Saint LuciaHow much: $30,000 to $80,000 a night, depending on the seasonDesign draws: An expansive nine-room villa cohesively designed with sleek modernist spatial distribution and muted tone finishes; large suites that host a comprehensive collection of contemporary Pop Art while opening up to the stunning surroundings of lush rainforest and vibrant Caribbean waters.Book it: Spice of LifeGo virtually on vacation withmore design destinations right here.Photography courtesy of Sugar Beach.

  • This Power Bank Is Super-Thin But Still Packs a Large Battery
    design-milk.com
Portable power banks can be a lifesaver if youre on the go and find your phone out of juice, but theyre also bulky and annoying to carry around. The new CarbonBlade from Sharge aims to solve that with an ultra-slim build that makes it much easier to fit in your pocket, even when its in the same pocket as your phone. The power bank measures only 0.46 inches thick, while still offering a relatively large battery. That battery size is 10,000mAh, which makes it large enough to fully charge an iPhone 16 1.7x and a Samsung Galaxy S24 1.5x. According to Sharge, the power bank is 40% thinner than conventional 10,000mAh batteries, and at 165 grams, its lighter, too.Its even built to be eco-friendly as the battery bank is made from recycled carbon fiber. It should be strong enough to last through years of usage without major damage. The recycled carbon fiber design is sleek and makes the battery bank a little more unique than the traditional all-black power banks that most brands offer, and the red highlights of the power button and USB ports help it stand out. Its outfitted with USB-C and a USB-A ports for convenient charging and a power output of up to 22.5W, which is pretty quick for a portable battery like this. The Sharge CarbonBlade retails for $69.90 and is available at sharge.com.

  • Take 5: Surreal LEGO Art, a Dreamy Sweater, Puffy Lamp + More
    design-milk.com
    1. Katherine Duclos LEGO ArtworksVancouver-based multidisciplinary artist Katherine Duclos has been sharing her LEGO mosaic art on Instagram over the years and Im forever intrigued every time they pop up. As a LEGO lover, I can only imagine how painstaking the process is to create each piece, but assembled they appear well worth the effort (and cramped fingers, I imagine!). The color palettes and compositions Duclos pulls together on each one feel ethereal and surreal, which comes about from painting each LEGO brick and arranging them by hand. Not only is the artwork delightful to look at, its origin is even sweeter. Duclos found herself playing with LEGO bricks with her son, who had been diagnosed with autism and gravitated toward their modular design. That play time sparked her creativity and the result is an ever-growing body of work that rivals those artists using the typical mediums often associated with fine art.2. Sterling Mohair Cardigan by MiflandI rarely wear color, but if I did, it would be in the form of this Mifland sweater. I either love minimalist, black and white things, or vibrant colors and this piece of clothing leans into the saturated side while complementing it with more muted tones. Its the ideal balance if my two favorite color schemes come together. Founded in 2011 by Tobi Egberongbe, the Atlanta and New York-based Mifland is well known for their leather goods and bold color schemes, and I love seeing the brand continue to expand their offerings.3. Mini Puffy Star Sconce by Eny Lee ParkerWeve been documenting the work of Eny Lee Park for about a decade now and seeing her work evolve over the years has been fun to watch. The New York-based artist primary works in ceramic, with a range of designs spanning lighting, furniture, and accessories. In December, Park launched Mini Sconces in five adorable shapes and in 10 colors that will definitely match anyones taste and decor. Theres even an option to hardwire or have it wired with a plug if you want a less permanent lighting solution. I love all the shapes, but Im partial the the Puffy Star that I wish lived in my home. One day!4. Modern Pink Rug by Nordic KnotsEvery couple of months I search for a new rug for my living room to replace my black and white IKEA STOCKHOLM rug Ive had for many years. Its definitely seen better days. I keep coming back to this pink, black, and cream one that gives nod to early modern and Swedish funkis design. Its simple yet striking, and I think it would transform my tiny space.5. Love LA T-Shirt by The Hundreds and COREThe second The Hundreds launched this Love LA T-Shirt to support the victims of the Los Angeles fires, I bought it. They were only available for pre-order in January, but hopefully theyll do another run (because I ordered the wrong size and I would love to continue aiding the community!). The Hundreds partnered with CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) to help fund the ongoing efforts to aid all those that were affected by the devastating fires. The design is perfection and every time I wear it, it reminds me to keep doing whatever I can to support those that have lost so much. All of the profits went to COREs humanitarian strategies which is aces in my book.

  • N4 Architecture Crafts a Living Room Among the Trees
    design-milk.com
Like the best examples of contemporary design, the Birch Pavilion in Londons Stoke Newington reveals its sophistication through restraint, allowing the existing landscape to guide its form and function. As the name suggests, light filters through three birch trees, casting dappled shadows across a micro cement floor an interplay of nature and built form that captures the essence of N4 Architectures design philosophy. The backyard pavilion features sustainable materials and acoustic design for a multipurpose workspace and music room.Inside, a carefully considered material palette negotiates between competing demands. Here, acoustical requirements for music listening are met through cork ceiling panels, while birch plywood joinery creates visual continuity with the trees beyond. A table placed strategically within this space serves both as a workstation and as a point of contemplation, oriented to frame views of the garden through the buildings permeable structure.N4 goes on to say: Our clients came to us with a clear vision: they wanted a low-maintenance building that would stand the test of time, blending effortlessly into the landscape. Their decision to stay in this home for the long term drove everything about this project. The brief was clear: working space area and shelving for the beautiful CD collection to listen to music. We chose durable, sustainable materials to reflect that vision. For us, sustainability begins with thoughtful material choices, ensuring this space ages gracefully while minimizing its environmental impact. The primary structure is made of timber, a low carbon, renewable resource, and the metal cladding is fully reusable. Inside, birch plywood joinery continues the natural theme, while cork ceilings enhance acoustics for music listening. The pavilions relationship with its site merits particular attention. Rather than dominating the gardens peripheral, it acts as a mediator between manicured and wild space. From the outside, the pavilions subtle circular design reveals itself gradually. The repetition of vertical timber beams each precisely placed yet appearing organic in their spacing creates a permeable boundary that both defines and dissolves the structures edge. For more information on N4 Architecture, visit n4architecture.co.uk.Photography by Joshua Page.

  • Lincoln Is a New Sit-Stand Desk From Room & Board and Gensler
    design-milk.com
Room & Board introduces Lincoln, a sit-stand desk designed in a first-ever collaboration with Gensler. The line offers flexible solutions for work or home, combining aesthetics and performance.Teams from the global architecture firm and the furniture company (plus Room & Board for Business, the brands commercial branch) paired their strengths to envision the contemporary line. It was an opportunity to combine our areas of expertise, says Reid Guse, product merchandising and design manager at Room & Board. We leveraged Genslers human-centered design and Room & Boards quality craftsmanship. Each desk seamlessly transitions from sitting to standing positions, and also offers ample storage space. Lincoln desks the moniker is a nod to the virtues of the 16th president of the United States are built to last. The collection features responsibly-sourced North American hardwoods that meet Room & Boards rigorous sustainability standards. The design of the pieces is also timeless, with clean lines, rounded edges, and modern drawer pulls that complement any style of interior. Gensler identified users desire for built-in functionality, with varying lengths to accommodate a range of postures. The desk rises to 49 inches when fully extended, and 30 inches tall when height adjustability is collapsed. It is all powered by a touch control panel on the surface, with three memory settings. Lifting columns are hidden within, eliminating the bulk of traditional sit-stand options. A safety reverse function and lock offer added security, while leveling glides and feet ensure stability.Storage is key, with plenty of space available for accessories, devices, and paperwork. Essentials can be tucked away when no longer needed, keeping the desktop tidy. A hinged hatch with a soft-close lid can hold a power strip to keep it within easy reach. Openings are on the top of the desk, in the center drawer, and at the back for hidden cord organization. Drawers can hold up to 100 pounds.A variety of configurations are available, which can be changed based on current requirements. Electric height-adjustable controls are on offer if preferred. Different storage setups and desk widths also help individuals maximize space. Three stock options transform the look of rooms, from light to dark solid wood and wood veneers. Classic walnut is always a favorite, or oak with rye stain creates a more contemporary appeal. The Lincoln collection is truly versatile, whether dressed up or down. There are a lot of efficient elements within one collection, and yet it still feels unified, Guse notes. For more information on Lincoln, visit roomandboard.com.Photography courtesy of Room & Board.

  • The New Lily Lamp by Maju Creates a New Future for Lighting
    design-milk.com
The Lily Lamp by Maju, 3D printed with plant-based, biodegradable materials, centers around the versatility of a core object: the light. The shade is printed without support material, saving 50% more energy per print. As an additive process, there is minimal waste in production compared to traditional manufacturing. Just as comfortable on a wall or ceiling as on a table, the Lily Lamp is designed for ultimate functionality, allowing different bases and shades to be added indefinitely.Support material is the only additional waste generated in 3D printing, allowing the set geometry to form correctly as the printer wends its way around its path. This allows printing to give us any shape in any material, usually an incredibly costly process for machined items. While hyper-technical pieces must still be made traditionally, 3D printing has opened a whole new paradigm of recently impossible vertices. Maju employs this technology in a novel way, without any need for support material. This decreases overall print time, which uses less energy, and also skips the finishing process, which is sometimes a chemically-intensive process where pieces must be dipped into baths, creating a glossy shine. Instead, these pieces retain their original satin finish, a slight shine allowing the base to softly reflect the light coming from above. The first of its kind to feature multi-modal and modular design, the base of the Lily Light can be extended, using separate pieces that attach simply to the base to lift the shade. The opacity of the shade allows just enough light to get through as to create a warm glow, adding ambiance with a modern twist. As a table lamp, the cord neatly wraps around an inner channel in the center, ensuring the lamp is safe for all types of humans, big or small.Utilizing different filaments creates a multitude of shade opacities and qualities, which can be customized by special request. We grow with the light, using just the hardware to delineate what the lamp is while changing out perhaps both base and shade, a mini ship of Theseus. All this with minimal environmental impact which would you choose first?Maju is a 3D-printed lighting company changing the way we see lighting. Fluid, ephemeral, and elegant, the pieces Maju offer are interchangeable, replaceable, and upgradeable shades. The shades incorporate biomimetic design, utilizing the original designer, nature, to define their constraints. The Lily Omni and the Lily Grande are available on Majus website, and we look forward to seeing what theyll do next. The Lily Omni is available for purchase on Majus website at maju.design.

While its long-term resilience remains to be seen, it offers a promising alternative. Apples FineWoven material, another leather substitute, faced criticism for its lack of durability, leading Apple to scale back its FineWoven product line though some accessories remain available. The BioVeg Collection comes in four colors, including Black, Tan, Lilac, and Mint, featuring CASETiFYs signature design with a minimalist body and a black-framed camera cutout displaying the CASETiFY logo. Customers can also personalize their cases with custom text, allowing for names, quotes, or other messages displayed in various typography options. On top of the BioVeg phone cases, CASETiFY is also introducing a range of additional accessories that make use of its leather alternative. Many of those accessories are designed with heart-shaped details, including cross-body straps, a MagSafe wallet for the iPhone, and even a BioVeg cover for the AirPods 4.While CASETiFYs BioVeg cases are priced at a premium, they remain competitive within the high-end phone case market. The phone cases retail for $74, while the MagSafe wallets start at $42 for solid colors and $46 for the heart-shaped versions (available in two colors solid Black and a Tan and Red). Apple AirPods 4 cases come in at $42 in Black and Tan options only. Hopefully, CASETiFY will continue to expand the lineup, especially if the accessories prove to be durable over time. You can check out all of the new CASETiFY BioVeg Collection of phone cases and accessories at the CASETiFY website. This post contains affiliate links, so if you make a purchase from an affiliate link, we earn a commission. • Paris Elyse Montmartre Hotel Highlights the Warmth of Eucalyptus
    design-milk.com
Situated beside the storied Elyse Montmartre concert hall in Paris, France, a once-abandoned building is stepping into a new era of design and sustainability. The recently opened Elyse Montmartre Hotelis the brainchild of design studio Policronica, which has meticulously transformed the space into the 16-room hotel integrating architecture, craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility.Unlike conventional hospitality projects, where interior design often relies on multiple external suppliers, Policronica took a different path, assuming full creative and manufacturing control over every aspect of the hotels interiors. The studio designed and produced all elements in-house from furniture and lighting to the smallest architectural details like handles. This singular approach has resulted in an environment where each component speaks the same design language, offering guests an experience of seamless cohesion and understated warmth. At the core of this project lies an innovative use of eucalyptus wood, a material often overlooked in high-end design due to its classification as an invasive species. Sourced from small-scale forest owners in Portugal, this wood, commonly relegated to paper production, has been repurposed to demonstrate its potential for refined applications. By purchasing the trees at a premium compared to traditional paper industry rates, Policronica not only elevates the materials status but also promotes responsible and diversified forestry practices.Policronicas Lisbon-based workshop operates as an incubator for end-to-end production, eliminating the fragmentation typically seen in construction and furniture manufacturing. Designers, architects, carpenters, and industrial specialists collaborate under one roof, streamlining processes that would traditionally be divided across multiple suppliers. This integrated workflow reduces inefficiencies and fosters innovation in sustainable manufacturing. One of the most groundbreaking advancements introduced in this project is Policronicas development of solar vacuum wood dryers. These innovative drying chambers significantly accelerate the natural curing process of eucalyptus wood, reducing the timeframe from 18 months to just six days while ensuring stability and durability. Additionally, by maximizing the use of each tree trunk and eliminating unnecessary transportation between processing facilities, the project maintains an exceptionally low carbon footprint.Throughout the hotel rooms, Policronica tapped raw materials, such as wood, plant fibers, brass, and neutral fabrics, to form a monochromatic, organic interior that is anything but bland. Each room evokes the feeling of being at home, if one lived in a stylish Parisian apartment, with warmth and coziness right in the middle of an urban environment. For more information on the Elyse Montmartre Hotel, visit emhotel.fr, and for more on Policronica, head to policronica.com.Photography courtesy of Policronica.

  • Chromacosm Celebrates the Largest Color System in the World
    design-milk.com
Renowned architect and artist Suchi Reddy and historic Indian brand Asian Paints recently presented Chromacosm, the largest and most comprehensive architectural color system with over 5,300 unique shades. Reddy brought her imaginative eye and sense of style to the Asian Paints installation during the Architecture and Design Film Festival in Mumbai, India, creating a sense of smallness among meadows of gradients. Like a creature among grass, the viewer walks among tall stalks of colored cylinders, all adorned with a myriad of color. Inspired by ancient Tantric paintings and the science of light and absorption, Reddy imagines each hue in three dimensions, gently yet definitively held under the forces of light, shadow, and space.Immersive, tall, and mysterious, the exhibit, which incorporates over 2,000 shades from the Chromacosm library, takes the viewer on a journey through gradients and color combinations of all types, hiding certain values from certain angles while openly revealing others. The multitude of the black tubes are pleasing to the eye, with white bands delineating an optical illusion of planes rising above the earth. Regular and expansive, these bands carry a cohesion throughout the exhibition, instilling a sense of normalcy among the explosion of color. The tops of the tubes are adorned with a multitude of shades, compiled from different aspects of Indian culture. Its only fitting that the worlds largest color library comes from India, says Reddy. This project celebrates our heritage while setting new benchmarks for creativity and innovation in design. Asian Paints spent over a decade compiling colors from Indias rich traditions, technological innovation blending seamlessly with historical context. The Chromacosm library organizes the 5,300 shades by hue and depth, allowing extensive exploration of color families and combinations. Taking inspiration from ancient traditions like Ajrakh and Kalamkari, the collection blends centuries of artisanal experience with scientific advancements in color.Suchi Reddy, a renowned New York City-based designer, artist, and architect, has a strong sense of space delineation and color that is highly apparent here. Founder of Reddymade, a studio that revolves around their core belief that form follows feeling, she spans the width of design from public art to large-scale commercial spaces. Neuroaesthetics, the belief that good design promotes well-being, is crucial to understanding the influences in her work. Receiving numerous accolades, she uses cutting-edge materials to create a world where architecture puts people first.Suchi ReddyFor more information on Chromacosm, please visit reddymade.design.Photography courtesy of Reddymade and Asian Paints.

  • Pop Off: Design Milk Celebrates Champagne Chair 2025 Winners
    design-milk.com
Me, judgmental? Only for a good causeOn behalf of Design Milk and humbly at the behest of our friends at Design Within Reach (DWR), purveyors of authentic modern design I accepted an invitation and the awesome responsibility to judge the finalists competing in their Champagne Chair Contest, held in partnership with Pommery, now in its 21st iteration. This years proceeds will benefit Docomomo, a non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation and conservation of the modern movements vulnerable buildings, sites, and neighborhoods. Its perfect timing given the existential threats this genre of design now faces. So just a few weeks ago, I traversed the Lower East Side of Manhattan, stumbled down narrow stairs in an unassuming restaurant, then sauntered into an intimate banquet room covered in tone-on-tone red velvet. With great pleasure I sat alongside two architects and designers from the Docomomo community, as well as miniature model maker Aspen VanHooser, who submitted winning designs two consecutive years prior. Im happy to report an unexpected turn of events along my redemption arc, which originated days after the 20th anniversary edition where I dreamt an imaginary rivalry with the prolific VanHooser. Were now creative co-conspirators sharing our favorite artist gadgetry and trauma dumping memories from studio life.Trolleys were nestled into two opposite corners and staged with chair designs that ranged from the literal to conceptual, loose interpretations of seating. As in the past, submissions were judged according to one of three categories: most original, best likeness to an iconic piece, and Pommery prize for those who used the supplies provided. Each maker worked their materials to fit within a 4 x 4 x 4 volume once assembled. But it was no simple task. Each participants idea appeared to be realized through an alchemic process that transformed caps, wrappers, corks, and labels into clearly articulated chair designs. And each concept was a testament to craft and the resilience required to survive studio art of that nature. Entries boasted personalities as diverse as the personalities behind them. After much deliberation and a few passionate pitches, we had our winners.Best Craftsmanship: Brut Royal Daybed by Rob MetzgarBest Craftsmanship: Rob Metzgars Brut Royal Daybed was a personal favorite of mine as this typology operates in some liminal space between seated and sleeping. Its design boasts an elegant silhouette, an extreme level of craft in its caning, and a clear intention behind how or where colors are employed. The delightful cap and cork throw pillows atop two-tone upholstery pushed my vote for best craftsmanship far over the edge. Most Original: Infinity Lounge Chair by Monte A.Most Original: The Infinity Lounge Chair by Monte A. is deceptively simple, but the astute judges took notice of this most original design quickly. Its backrest to seat proportion is as finely tuned as the texture and granular scales of cork comprising each section. Whats more, the cage has been masterfully manipulated into legs and an actual structure for the chair without showing any signs of stress or kinks from bending.Best Likeness: La Chaise, inspired by the Eames La Chaise, by Ann T. DinhBest Likeness: Inspired by the original Eames design, Ann Dinh recreated La Chaise and likely whatever mold or amalgam went into producing it. The curvaceous shape is near perfect, the finish is super slick, and the legs are crisp in contrast to the organic nature of the other elements. Its shiny topcoat catches and tracks light beautifully across its surface. For more information about the DWR Champagne Chair Contest, visit dwr.com.Our very own Managing Editor, Joseph Sgambati III, previously participated in the competition check out his entry here!Photography courtesy of Design Within Reach. This post contains affiliate links, so if you make a purchase from an affiliate link, we earn a commission.
