Kumagaya House Addresses Japans Changing Household Dynamics
In the aftermath of World War II, Japan embraced the nuclear family as its predominant household structure, echoing anthropologist George Murdocks assertion of its universality. However, in recent years, the prevalence of nuclear-family households has declined a shift reflective of a desire to escape the pressures of conforming to the tightly-knit nucleus of the family unit. In response to these evolving dynamics, architects in Japan are rethinking the design of the home itself, aiming to alleviate the demands for constant cohesion within families. In Saitama, Japan, the Kumagaya House, designed by CHOP+ARCHI, is one such example of space redefined by this cultural shift. This design approach breaks up the traditional nucleus by introducing a central cruciform void that divides the home into four distinct spaces. The concept draws inspiration from the ta-no-ji layout, named after the Chinese character for rice field, which features a grid-like arrangement. Unlike the traditional configuration, where spaces overlap, the void acts as a buffer, creating separation between the rooms while still maintaining a subtle connection between them. Each space remains linked to the outdoors, ensuring a sense of openness and fluidity. This design approach introduces air as a key element in the home. The central void acts as a buffer, reducing tension between family members and easing the pressure to function as a single unit. By using open space instead of solid walls to divide areas, the design creates a calm and flexible environment. This allows modern families to adapt to changing needs while maintaining a sense of stability and connection, as well as respecting traditional Japanese design principles. This balance results in a living space that feels both fresh and familiar. For more information on CHOP+ARCHI, visit choparchi.com.Photography by Masao Nishikawa.

KICKBACK Is Bringing Back the 90s With Its Latest Modern-Retro Tech
Retro technology is making a bold comeback, with the design sensibilities of the past influencing todays tech products. Transparent gadgets, popularized by brands like Nothing and Fiio, are becoming all the rage. Now, tech brand KICKBACK has joined the trend, combining retro aesthetics with modern functionality in its latest offerings.KICKBACKs recent releases include a transparent DISCMAN and a cassette recorder dubbed the DIY Mixtape Kit. These devices bring a nostalgic charm while integrating advanced technology. While most people wont give up their Spotify accounts, theres something satisfying about dusting off old CDs or cassette tapes.KICKBACK appeals particularly to Gen Z, blending vintage aesthetics with the innovations of today. Its products might look straight out of the 90s, but they are more sophisticated than anything available back then.DISCMAN: Retro Meets Modern With BluetoothKICKBACKs DISCMAN is a nod to the classic CD player of the 90s, but with a contemporary twist. The transparent design, combined with retro-style headphones, evokes the aesthetics of the era. However, it also comes equipped with Bluetooth, allowing it to be used wirelessly on the go.Perhaps the coolest thing about this DISCMAN is its transparent casing, which lets users watch the CD spin during playback. The design is further enhanced by vibrant orange accents that give the device a distinctly nostalgic look. Built from durable, high-quality materials, this DISCMAN is perfect for both retro enthusiasts and modern-day audiophiles.DIY Mixtape Kit: A New Take on Cassette RecordingKICKBACKs DIY Mixtape is a cassette recorder that lets users convert digital music into cassette format. The device, which comes with four blank tapes, is compact and portable. You can listen to your recordings through retro-inspired headphones or the built-in speaker. Although converting digital audio to a cassette may take some effort, its a fun way to combine retro vibes with modern music. The device can also play regular cassette tapes, making it perfect for anyone with a stash of old tapes or access to their parents music collections. Its design leans heavily into nostalgia, featuring oversized buttons for controlling playback and recording, along with a large speaker at the top. Theres even a USB-A port on the front, a somewhat dated feature that adds to its retro appeal.Unfortunately, both the DISCMAN and the DIY Mixtape are currently sold out, but they have made the DIY Mixtape Kit available for pre-order. Hopefully, more stock will be added at some point. For more information, visit kickback.world.

The PLI Steel Wall Shelf by TIPTOE Offers Endless Possibilities
Gone are the days of boring shelving now replaced with the new PLI Steel Wall Shelf by French design studio TIPTOE. The PLI system is endlessly customizable, coming in six chic colors and three different sizes. Utilizing a folding steel technique that minimizes waste, sustainability in every stage of the design process is TIPTOEs specialty. Founded in 2015, themes of simplicity and restraint are integral to the studios ethos. Reparable parts and recycled materials are features of most pieces in TIPTOEs collection, showing integrity in process and product.Slim kitchen shelving is a need, not a want, in tight city apartments where space is at a premium. The PLI system is completely customizable to the residents needs, with multiple sizes for storing any amount of glasses or spice jars. The best part? Add more shelves as needed, and mix it up with some fun colors too. The powder-coated steel is highly durable, staying resistant to chipping, fading, scratches, and general wear over time. This makes the PLI a great kitchen, or any room, companion, staying bright and spotless for years to come.Shown above utilizing different sizes to create the same repeats, there are so many ways to use the PLI system to manage and delineate favorite items. This allows us to be more specific about the things we wish to put on the shelves, adding intentionality to our everyday lives. To view a neat little line of these with objects organized? Stellar. The full color range, shown above, includes the colors Graphite Black, Cream White, Eucalyptus Grey, Rock Blue, Powder Pink, and Yellow Naples. These hues range from muted to bright, ensuring any interior would look even better with a PLI system to organize and refine. Of course this could also act as an entryway catchall, bedside organizer, or tech shelf with ease. For offices and studies, the PLI system would fit right in. Keep your space looking smart with an assortment of similar sizes for a repeating modular look. The sides of the shelf can act as a bookend, stabilizing and modernizing any amount of books youd like to store. The total depth of the shelf extends to 15cm, and screws and dowels are included in the package. Powder-coated steel is built to last and requires virtually no maintenance, just a light dusting. The PLI Wall Shelf comes in three sizes:Small: 30 cm x 15 cm x 20 cm (11.8 in x 5.9 in x 7.87 in)Medium: 45 cm x 15 cm x 20 cm (17.7 in x 5.9 in x 7.87 in)Large: 60 cm x 15 cm x 20 cm (23.6 in x 5.9 in x 7.87 in)TIPTOEs commitment to sustainability as a whole is exactly what the industry needs. The studio holds five principles above all: make things simple, make more with less, use the right materials, build to last, and design for disassembly. Transparency and pride surrounding these ideas is apparent throughout their work: We believe that the world doesnt need more furniture. It needs better furniture.Find out more about the PLI Steel Shelf at tiptoe.fr.

The JF Apartment Merges Brutalism and Minimalism in So Paulo
The JF apartment in So Paulo, Brazil, reimagined by Zalc Arquitetura, represents an inspired blend of brutalist architecture and minimalist design, creating a home that is as much a gallery of art and ideas as it is a living space. Located in the Higienpolis neighborhood, known for its modernist architectural landmarks and cultural vibrancy, the 1,959-square-foot apartment transformation is more than just a renovation its a statement of aesthetic and functional innovation tailored to meet the unique needs of the homeowners, an art-collecting couple with a passion for design. The concept behind the JF apartment was to craft a space that merges the raw, monolithic nature of brutalism with the clean, uncluttered lines of minimalism. Brutalism, with its emphasis on unadorned concrete and stark geometric forms, is often considered austere, even imposing. However, in the hands of Zalc Arquitetura, the brutalist elements serve as the foundation of the apartments identity, while minimalist details elevate the atmosphere, making the space feel open, airy, and welcoming. The marriage of architectural styles creates a sense of balance, where the rawness of exposed concrete slabs and beams is offset by the deliberate simplicity of the design. By stripping the apartment of unnecessary ornamentation, the architecture itself becomes the art, allowing the natural textures of the materials and furnishings to take center stage. Every element, from the materials to the layout, contributes to an environment that feels both powerful and serene. One of the most significant changes in the redesign was the apartments reconfiguration, which reflects the studios commitment to creating a space that is both beautiful and functional. Originally, the apartment had a small service bedroom adjacent to the kitchen a common feature in older Brazilian apartments. By removing this room, the architects were able to expand both the kitchen and laundry areas, making them more practical for modern living. The layout now features an open plan that connects the social areas such as the living room, dining space, and kitchen while maintaining the privacy of the bedrooms and the suite. This sense of fluidity is enhanced by sliding steel doors that can be closed to delineate the different zones when needed, allowing the homeowners flexibility without sacrificing the overall sense of openness. The integrated design promotes interaction between spaces, making the apartment ideal for hosting gatherings and displaying the couples extensive art collection. At the same time, the private areas of the apartment remain secluded, offering a retreat from the more public zones of the home. One of the standout features of the renovation is the restoration of the original marquetry wood floor. In its previous state, the intricate wooden flooring was hidden beneath layers of epoxy paint, a remnant of the apartments earlier design. Zalc Arquitetura saw the potential in this historical element and made it a priority to bring it back to life. The painstaking process of stripping the floor and restoring it to its original condition was not just a design choice but an environmental one. By preserving and revitalizing existing materials, the architects demonstrated a commitment to sustainability, reducing waste while honoring the apartments architectural history. The reconditioned flooring now serves as a warm, organic counterpoint to the otherwise industrial and minimalist surroundings, grounding the apartment in its historical roots. The visual language of the JF apartment is defined by its use of a neutral, largely monochromatic color palette, which allows the natural textures of the materials to speak for themselves. Concrete is a dominant feature, forming the backbone of the apartments aesthetic. Exposed concrete slabs and beams lend the space an industrial quality, creating a striking visual contrast with the smooth, clean lines of the minimalist furnishings.Another highlight of the new design is the incorporation of a curved steel and glass wall, which separates the bedrooms from the social areas. This gentle curve contrasts beautifully with the sharp, linear forms typical of brutalist architecture, softening the space and introducing a dynamic interplay between geometry and fluidity. The curved wall not only adds a sculptural element to the apartment but also redefines the spatial experience. It introduces a sense of movement, guiding the eye and creating a flow that counterbalances the otherwise rigid forms. The apartments subdued color scheme is punctuated by bold accent colors found in carefully selected pieces of furniture, art, and decor. These vibrant elements inject energy into the space, offering moments of surprise and contrast without overwhelming the overall minimalist tone. The thoughtful curation of artwork adds further depth to the design, as each piece is chosen not only for its aesthetic value but also for how it interacts with the space.Rafael ZalcTo see more projects from Zalc Arquitetura, visit zalc.arq.br.Photography by Andr Mortatti.

Joel Shapiros New Sculptures Radiate Joy and Defy Gravity
My favorite Joel Shapiro sculpture is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art an orange dancer-like structure that has made me smile since the first day I arrived in New York, now 23 year ago. That sculpture, like most of his work for the last 50+ years is radiantly joyful, defies gravity, and seems to move as you walk around it.Joel Shapiro: Out of the Blue. 510 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10016 September 13 October 26, 2024 \\\ Photo: Courtesy Pace GalleryHis current exhibition at Pace in New York, Joel Shapiro: Out of the Blue, is everything you want from a Shapiro with with new surprises. Presenting his largest wood sculpture to date, along with a dozen small studies and bronzes, its a playfully intelligent experience with color, space, material, and movement that keeps you circling.Joel Shapiro: Out of the Blue. 510 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10016 September 13 October 26, 2024 \\\ Photo: Courtesy Pace GalleryThe exhibition spans two rooms with generous space to experience all 360 degrees of each work. Debuting here are three new massive wood sculptures each taller than any viewer. The central work, titled ARK (titles are rare for Shapiro who has long-preferred the untitled) is also the largest in the room, reaching nearly 12 feet tall. The structure feels like someone paused an implosion in space as geometric shapes seem like they ignore our own gravity as they find their own central magnetism.Joel Shapiro, ARK, 2020 / 2023-2024, Joel Shapiro \\\ Artists Rights Society (ARS), New YorkThe three new works are an interesting shift from the two exhibitions of sculpture he presented in New York a decade ago (see them here: at Pace Gallery in 2010 and Paula Cooper Gallery in 2014) where he presented works suspended by a network of rope. Though it was undeniably thrilling to walk into the middle of a fully exploded Shapiro, the ropes also explained their weightlessness. However in this new work, and especially in ARK, the objection to gravity seems nearly impossible it must be bound by physics, but it doesnt look like it.Joel Shapiro: Out of the Blue. 510 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10016 September 13 October 26, 2024 \\\ Photo: Courtesy Pace GalleryJoel Shapiro, untitled, 2004. Joel Shapiro \\\ Artists Rights Society (ARS), New YorkBut the real treat is in the second room where a dozen small studies and bronzes pack nothing but gleeful wonder. My favorite works are the colorful wood structures that reveal their making with an abundance of visible nails, rods, or screws. Its as if youre witnessing the works creation, when Shapiro suspends an element in space and rapidly secures it with multiple shots from a pin gun.Joel Shapiro: Out of the Blue. 510 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10016 September 13 October 26, 2024 \\\ Photo: Courtesy Pace GalleryA stand out is untitled (structural study for 20 Elements) (below) a study for the artists large-scale work of a similar title that was once shown in brilliant juxtaposition at the Musee dOrsay. This Crescent-Shaped Chair for Kids Eclipses the Rest of the Room
Designing kids spaces is one of the most fun parts of creating a home. These rooms offer the perfect opportunity to embrace playful designs and whimsical details that might not fit elsewhere in the house. However, creating a room for your youngest (and perhaps toughest) critics comes with its own set of challenges. Kids may not prioritize aesthetics, so striking the balance between fun, functionality, and style is key. This not only makes it easier for parents to create soothing, joyful spaces, but also minimizes the need for frequent furniture updates as kids grow. Enter the Moon Chair, a new modular seating option by Latvian kids brand Wigiwama that will inspire creativity and agency in kids.Designed by Mark Litvyakov, Wigiwamas photographer-turned-product designer, the Moon Chair gets its name from its present shape. Composed of three separate pieces, the modular chair allows users to easily adjust the recline of the soft seat. Its flexibility not only accommodates varying comfort preferences but also encourages imaginative play, as children can rearrange and build with the different elements. While kids will love the Moon Chair for its playful, interactive design, parents will also appreciate its practicality and style. If your child takes it from the playroom to the living room, it wont look out of place, Litvyakov promises. By opting for aesthetic design, we stimulate childrens creativity and imagination without visually overwhelming them and our homes. We believe that good taste can be cultivated from an early age. Available in four colors and two fabric options, the chair is both eco-friendly and durable. The Toffee and Brown Sugar options feature a an OEKO-TEX and GRS-certified corduroy made from recycled PET bottles, while the Biscuit and Cream White chairs come in a OEKO-TEX certified teddy fabric. Visible from the exterior, this vast area invites visitors to explore an array of digital content curated specifically for Espacio Movistar. In the retail zone here, shoppers can compare and purchase the latest devices, from mobile phones to tablets.Lustrous marble, previously covered, is now revitalized and polished. A steel helix staircase, clad in ribbed walnut, leads to the upper level. On this floor, theres an emphasis on entertainment for a younger audience, featuring a range of sections for activity. Todays influencers, whether famous or fledgling, can book one of two clear bubble pods to record or take selfies. Legato Lighting by Luca Nichetto for Matter Made Makes Spaces Glow
White space, in design and in music, is often a welcome respite. The pauses, quick between the notes and longer between stanzas, are what sparks intrigue within the listener as were waiting for more. The Legato lighting system by Luca Nichetto for Matter Made takes its name from a musical reference, meaning an unbroken sequence of notes. Italian for tied together, it indicates that the notes should be played smoothly.Pinned together and stacked on a delicate aluminum frame, the conical units seem to cascade down the empty space, much like notes dotting a vertical staff. The shades are regular, reserved, yet offer a surprising softness in the tone of warm light exuding into the surrounding interior. Shades can be positioned in multiple different ways, to offer custom lighting solutions exquisitely fit for a stately office or upscale bar.Designer Luca Nichetto, of Nichetto Studio, illuminates us: Im thrilled that the product has finally gone into production. Over the years, it has been fascinating to explore all the possibilities and see the companys efforts to make this happen. Im confident it will be a product that delivers a lot of satisfaction. It maintains a sculptural appearance while being highly functional a perfect balance of beauty and function, which we always strive to achieve.Legato Double StringsLegato Double StringsLegato StringAvailable in many different configurations, the Legato String sports these characteristic shades. Custom amounts of modules and hanging options are available on the Matter Made site, which offer ultimate flexibility in scope and installation. The Legato String features shades that point both up to the ceiling and down to the ground, or a combination of both, to add an overall glow to any interior. This would be a wonderful addition to a space with an interesting finish, crown molding, or vintage roof.Legato StringLegato StringLegato StringLegato StringSome configurations point completely upward, to highlight the ceiling and offer a softer, ambient glow below. Others point downward, for a more robust and direct lighting solution. Others include two pendants, doubling the glow, like Legato Double Strings pictured below.Legato Double StringsLegato Double StringsLegato Double StringsLegato Double StringsLegato LinearA beautiful solution for a dining table or bar, the Legato Linear catches the ambient light softly in a one up and one down shade sequence in the brushed aluminum finish. It was incredibly gratifying to work on the design and development of Legato for so many years and have it feel just as relevant and timeless as the day we started, says Jamie Gray, founder and creative director of Matter Made.Legato LinearBrooklyn-based Matter Made produces minimalist works that evoke a refined sense of detail, celebrating materiality in a clever and considered manner. A beautiful level of collaboration takes place between producer and designer, creating relationships that last. Working at the highest level of craftsmanship and collaborating with influential voices in the industry has put Matter Made on the map, offering charming and practical pieces sure to last a lifetime.Legato LinearLuca Nichetto is a multidisciplinary designer, deeply inspired by the Murano glasswork that dotted his childhood and then professional work in Venice. Founding his studio in 2006 with the aim to create thoughtful, modern work, collaborating with brands such as Bernhardt Design, Herms, and Moooi. Five years later, he would move to Sweden to start a family and open a second studio there, infusing his Italian heritage with Scandinavian design experience. A Exhibition of Bookends Unveils a Tribute to Pioneering Journalists
At this years Dundee Design Festival, bookends got their moment in the spotlight. Often the humble sidekick to your favorite reads, they stepped out from the shadows to become centerpieces of an exhibition thats all about storytelling, adventure, and design. The Bookendsexhibition marked a double anniversary: Dundees tenth year as a UNESCO City of Design and Edinburghs twentieth as a UNESCO City of Literature. The exhibit draws inspiration from two trailblazing female journalists, Bessie Maxwell and Marie Imandt, who made headlines over a century ago with their globetrotting reporting. They opened eyes to the cultures, landscapes, and lives of women around the world, all from the vantage point of the 1890s.Lauren Morsley Wonder: This project afforded me the opportunity to delve into an unfamiliar process, and its been such a fun and informative experienceFor the exhibition, 20 designers from across Scotland were tasked with reinterpreting the womens extraordinary travels through the lens of you guessed it bookends. Every bookend has a story and we wanted to invite some of Scotlands most interesting and inventive designers to tell their own, shares Dundee Design Festival Creative Director Stacey Hunter. Each designer took cues from the textures, colors, and cultural insights Bessie and Marie detailed in their writings. The resulting exhibition is a beautiful mashup of art, history, and design, where bookends do more than just hold books they hold stories. Its a tribute to two remarkable women who changed how the world saw women in journalism.James Rigler Foreign Objects: Foreign Objects are intimate in scale, but transform the bookshelf itself into a vibrant, other-worldly landscape. The full list of designers and studios featured are: Adam Johnston, Akiko Matsuda, Alistair Byars of GRAS, Aymeric Renoud, Camillo Atlas, Steven Blench of Chalk Plaster, Ciara Isabel Neufeldt, Granite + Smoke (Lindsey Hesketh + Claire Canning), James Rigler, Jennifer Gray, Juli Bolanos-Durman, Kate Trouw, Lauren Morsley, Louise Forbes Design, Marc Sweeney, MULGREW, Nicholas Denney Studio, Nick Ross, Wobbly Digital by Soorin Shin, Stefanie Ying Lin Cheong. Here are a few that we particularly loved:Steven Blench HB Graphite: The pencil is a tool which many writers choose to make their mark sketching out and refining drafts before committing their ideas to print. Graphite is the material in which so many stories begin to find their form long before they are fixed on the printed page. It seemed like the perfect material for bookends.Nicolas Denney Past hopes for the future: A round the world voyage seemed like the ideal subject matter to investigate the concept of landscape as a transition of materials, formed by processes of compression and erosion. Juli Bolanos Durman Possibilities of Enjoyment: My bookends are a celebration of women, our sensibility and this incredible soft power; a sixth sense. A silhouette of the feminine form and a breast, our universal symbol. The bookends are an ode to this force and our call to fight for everyones equality.Granite + Smoke (Lindsey Hesketh + Claire Canning) Ten Shores: The bookends honour the adventurous spirit and pioneering bravery of Marie Imandt and Bessie Maxwell, encapsulating 19th-century cultural insights and Dundees UNESCO recognition.Akiko Matsuda Beyond: These paired ring-shaped bookends symbolize the two womens growth as they traveled across the globe.Aymeric Renoud Stack: It was important for us to put an accent on materiality, first because it is one of the main ethos of our studio but also because we think it is such a significant source of inspiration within the field we evolve in as well as Marie and Bessie keen eyes for details.Jennifer Gray World at her fingertips: Spheres represent the globe to reflect, travel and global connectedness of the current-day Journalists with the world at her fingertips.Kate Trouw Union: The Union bookends are made from repurposed waste materials and materials that have been responsibly sourced through sustainable harvesting methods. The intention behind this re-purposing of non-precious, commonplace materials is to use design to elevate their perceived value through the processes of collage and abstraction.Louise Forbes Design For Books not Buildings: I tried lots of different compositions before I landed on the final placement of everything. Ive always, unintentionally, made things that look like wee characters, and these wee guys are no different!Adam Johnston A Material Library of Scotland: For a designer, a materials library is just as important as a reference library. These bookends combine the two to create a unique pair of objects that blur the line between books and samples.Camillo Atlas interdependence: it was clear from the start that I wanted the bookends to be abstracted and minimal, linked to the book through its inspiration whilst also able to be used and looked at without any context.Learn more about the Bookends exhibition at dundeedesignfestival.com.Photography by Reuben Paris.

Situated in an established San Francisco Bay Area neighborhood, the house is a relaxing haven amid city life, blending indoor and outdoor living with the help of mature oak trees, reflective water features, and expansive views of curated gardens.Architect Tom Kundigs design is a study in contrasts, balancing formal and casual spaces within a single structure. The home, which spans multiple zones, includes an area for entertaining guests and a more intimate section dedicated to family life. These distinct zones not only give the house a sense of openness but also foster a feeling of closeness and warmth. As Kundig explains, This project organizes a pretty big home around two very different functions: formal spaces for hosting and entertaining, and much more casual family spaces. This dual-purpose design is bolstered by the homes close connection to nature, achieved through expansive glass walls and kinetic elements that blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors. The entrance of the home begins with a dramatic statement: a black steel bridge suspended over a lightwell, leading to a bronze pivoting front door that opens onto an art-filled entryway. Large walls throughout the house showcase the familys impressive art collection, featuring works from artists such as Oscar Murillo and Alma Allen, while oversized glass windows offer uninterrupted views of the lush surrounding landscape. An Olympic-sized swimming pool lays along the axis of the hovering primary suite, an extension of the covered outdoor living space. On the opposite side of the pool is a cabana, which features a sauna, cold plunge, and outdoor gym.Inside, the formal wing is punctuated by reflecting pools and framed with black steel columns. A pair of 13-foot pivoting glass doors anchor the space, allowing light to flow freely. Custom elements like a botanical bronze screen by artist David Wiseman add further layers of texture and artistry. As Nicole Hollis describes, A screen by David Wiseman was a custom commission with the artist, and one of the most distinctive choices we made.In contrast to the formal living areas, the family zones are designed to feel casual yet luxurious. The kitchen, centered around a 28-foot-long Titiano marble island, opens onto a terrace, extending into the outdoors with dedicated spaces for cooking and dining under the shelter of the primary suites cantilevered volume. The outdoor kitchen, pool, and sports facilities encourage an active lifestyle, a design decision Kundig highlights: The outdoor kitchen literally extends the energy from the main kitchen inside out into the landscape. The pool creates a link between the low-key activity of the house and the more intense recreational activity of the sauna, outdoor gym, and sport court beyond.A downstairs powder room houses a sculptural black marble sink surrounded by black wood walls embedded with veins of bronze inlay. The homes upper level is equally considered, featuring a serene primary suite that includes a marble bathtub, placed to create a peaceful connection with the surrounding tree canopy. A separate childrens wing adds functionality, providing privacy and play spaces, while at the basement level, a gym and recreation room open into the landscaped lightwell, ensuring natural light flows through even the most secluded parts of the home. The interiors, masterminded by Nicole Hollis, create a serene and inviting atmosphere, contrasting soft furnishings with the bold architectural lines of the house. Working with the architectural palette, we selected materials and finishes to contrast against the lush exterior landscape, creating a calming environment, Hollis explains. The careful interplay between the rigorous architecture and playful interior details softens the space, making it both livable and refined. For more information on Olson Kundig, visit olsonkundig.com, and for more information on NICOLEHOLLIS, visit nicolehollis.com.Photography by Douglas Friedman.

The Nothing Ear (open) Earbuds Arent Just See-Through
Smartphone and accessory brand Nothing is bringing its iconic transparent tech design to a new pair of earbuds. While the company already offers the Nothing Ear and the Nothing Ear (a) wireless earbuds, its now bringing the same formula to the new Nothing Ear (open) earbuds, which, as the name suggests, offer an open-ear design that allows you to hear your surroundings while jamming out to your favorite tunes.High Tech and Completely OpenThese particular earbuds have a lot going for them. As you would expect, they keep the same overall feel in terms of design, with the transparent stem that allows you to see the earbuds internals. Its a cool look that has become immediately recognizable as a Nothing product. And the transparent body is coupled with the classic white and red dots to signify the left and right earbuds another Nothing staple. The overall vibe is very retro but still feels modern and unique. The charging case has a transparent lid so you can make sure that your earbuds are there. The earbuds also have an ear hook design that ensures they stay firmly on your head when youre wearing them. Thats important considering the fact that open-ear earbuds dont wedge into your ear canals for stabilization. The ear hook design means that theyre a little larger, and the charging case, in particular, is much larger than a typical pair of earbuds. Thankfully, its still relatively flat, so it should be easy to fit into a pocket or bag without being too bulky. The earbuds are built for high-quality audio. Typically, open ear earbuds sacrifice some bass and high-end response, simply due to the fact that they cant isolate as well as other earbuds. The Nothing Ear (open) earbuds attempt to get around this with relatively large 14.2mm drivers, which should help with the bass response. The earbuds offer a decent battery life, providing 8 hours of continuous listening and 30 hours total, including the battery in the charging case. They connect through Bluetooth 5.3 with Bluetooth Multipoint, and support both Android and iOS.There are other smart features on offer too. The earbuds work with the same Nothing X app as Nothings other earbuds, which means that theyll get advanced EQ and customizable controls. And like the standard Nothing Ear earbuds, they support ChatGPT integration, so you can set them up to be able to talk directly to the AI app if thats something you might find useful.Right for You?The concept of open earbuds is slightly niche, of course. Traditional earbuds actually fit in your ear canal in an effort to block outside noise so that you can focus better on the music and so the speakers can deliver a more well-rounded frequency response. Open-ear earbuds flip the concept on its head. They avoid blocking your ear canals so that you can still hear whats going on around you. That makes them helpful for runners who want to be able to hear traffic around them, or parents who want to be able to hear their child.Of course, because open-ear earbuds are a little niche, theyre also a little underserved, which means that Nothing has a big advantage here. Bose offers a pair of open-ear earbuds in the form of the Bose Ultra, but theyre $300. The new Nothing Ear (open) earbuds are half that, at $149.For more information on the Nothing Ear (open) earbuds, head to nothing.tech.

The 3D-Printed Haibu Lamps Get an Assist From Gravity
In the world of ceramics, 3D printing has revolutionized design and production, offering levels of precision that are difficult to achieve by hand. Whether one prefers the traditional craftsmanship of ceramics or embraces the modern advancements of 3D printing, the results are undeniably impressive. Among these innovations are the Haibu suspension lamps, designed by Vittorio Paradiso for Paolo Castelli, one of Italys leading furniture manufacturers. The design of the Haibu lamps, which work both indoors and outdoors, is inspired by the natural, organic structure of a beehive. However, rather than being crafted through traditional methods, they are produced using an advanced 3D-printing process. This process uses clay as the primary material, allowing for exceptional precision and uniformity in the final product. The 3D printer meticulously layers the clay, creating a consistent texture that ensures each lamp has a refined, flawless exterior.Despite the technical precision inherent in 3D printing, the Haibu lamps also embrace a touch of unpredictability thanks to the forces of gravity. After the initial printing process, the soft clay naturally collapses slightly under its own weight. This subtle, organic sagging introduces small imperfections and irregularities in the form of minor gaps and patterns. These variations give each lamp a unique character, creating an interplay of smooth and textured surfaces that adds visual interest and individuality to the design. When the lamp is illuminated, these imperfections come to life. Light shines through the naturally formed gaps in the clay, casting soft, intricate shadows and creating a gradient effect within the lampshade. The result is a warm, inviting glow that enhances any space, whether indoors or outdoors. The combination of cutting-edge technology and natural materials brings a balance of precision and organic beauty, showcasing how the two can harmoniously coexist in modern design.Photo: Miro ZagnoliPhoto: Miro ZagnoliPhoto: Miro ZagnoliTo learn more about the Haibu lamps, which come in Small or Large, visit paolocastelli.com.Photography by Elisa Galluzzo unless otherwise stated.

Calico Wallpaper Makes Gold With Alchemy and Enchantment
Since 2013, Calico Wallpaper has presented the finest, most immersive wall murals on the market. Their new collection is in collaboration with Kindergarten teacher and Early Childhood Educator Janene Ping. Ping, who maintains a prolific natural dyeing practice, aims to highlight the balance and beauty of nature. Teaching at the Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School for thirty years has given her the insight and sensitivity needed to foster a love for the great outdoors in our little ones. This collaboration features two distinct collections, Alchemy and Enchantment.Alchemy in AcaciaThe Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School is committed to providing children with the tools they need to become aware citizens. During their time, they grow a personal relationship with the natural world, and learn to become an active participant in their local economy. F5: Erica Sellers Talks Her Favorite Art, a Creative Duo + More
A self-described mad scientist, Erica Sellers has merged art and design since she was a child. She invented contraptions and imaginary worlds, drawing or painting to let her many ideas take shape. While the product designer and builder has had many supporters, none was more influential than her grandmother Elsa, or Nonni to Sellers. Eccentric and generous, Elsa taught Sellers how to play five-card poker, telling her it would come in handy one day. She also nurtured her granddaughters love of architecture. I have fond memories of her driving me around her neighborhood in Palm Beach, Florida to look at all the mansions, Sellers says. Shed park right out in front of them so I could sit and sketch.Erica Sellers \\\ Photo: M. CooperAfter earning a degree in industrial design from Rhode Island School of Design, Sellers ventures included a stint as head of production for conceptual artist Tavares Strachan, a fellow RISD alum. Her vision for his installations at the Venice Biennale and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art garnered international acclaim.Sellers and longtime collaborator Jeremy Silberberg founded Studio S II in 2020. The pair works on a range of projects, from interiors to exhibition design. Whether experimenting with glass, aluminum, or maple wood, Sellers incorporates elements of kink, queerness, and a dash of science fiction into her work. She continues to push boundaries, always striving to challenge conventions with furniture and spaces that are distinctly cinematic.Theres plenty to keep Sellers busy, but physical activity like boxing helps to center her. Shes also passionate about snowboarding, and wishes she had more time to devote to developing that particular skill. Even though she sometimes struggles to achieve a manageable balance, she enjoys consistent creative momentum. My personal life and work life are pretty intertwined, which can be positive and negative, Sellers notes. The lack of boundaries can get exhausting, but I am constantly inspired and ready to hit the ground running.Today, Erica Sellers joins us for Friday Five!Nonni in Florence, Italy1. They were simultaneously chilling and compelling. When I read that these were made in the late 1960s, that just blew my mind. They felt so contemporary and spoke to real subjects I experience today masculinity, abuse, and identity. Theyre radical. Her work embodies a beautiful mix of the sensual and the grotesque. From what I can tell, they also have good ethics and a sense of responsibility in belonging to the creative industry. It always surprised me that Rick Owens fashion didnt hit it big until he was 40. The arms erratic movements express near hysteria, as if its meant to portray a human whos overcome with anxiety. There are infinite ways to interpret this piece, but it makes me sympathize with the robots infinite loop. To me, its as if it is experiencing the intense stress of responsibilities and expectations. It just doesnt know how to go on. This feels especially relevant with the advent of A.I. and the continuation of the combined mix between man and machine. I see this machine as almost human in its pursuit. In this series, the objects simultaneously pull apart and come together. These new adaptations integrate reflective and patinated materials against the rich browns of american walnut. Mooois New Geometric Drape Light Utilizes a 3D-Knitted Shade
For eons, we have been captivated by the graceful path of fabric, woven or knit. Chiseled into marble, detailed into mosaic, or rendered in oil, cloth has been venerated and imitated by every culture on earth, regardless of social structure or geographical constraints.Lifestyle brand Moooi presents the geometric Drape Light, a dynamic lighting solution by Canadian designer Jamie Wolfond that focuses on this interplay of materiality. A 3D-knitted polyester shade sits delicately atop two glass tubes of light, gently illuminating parts of the shade where the elements touch. The sweeping forms of the shade hang down from the tubes, cascading gracefully into darker hues where the light cannot reach. The industrial regularity of the tube lights meet the organic, flowing nature of knit, creating striking elements sure to elevate any interior. The warm glow of the Drape Light promotes a calming, serene atmosphere. Research shows time and time again that we are beholden to the effects of lighting. Tone and temperature is essential to creating an intentional space. The Drape Light does this beautifully, offering a range of tones in a singular piece, allowing gravity to do the rest. The essence of my design vision lies in material interaction, where the tension and flow of elements create a poetic dance of form and function, says the designer. The 3D-knit polyester shade is the star here, adding dimension and natural movement. Reminiscent of the canopies that flutter above the streets in Spain, this thick knit polyester material perfectly allows just enough light from the tube to escape downwards. A modernist showstopper, this piece is perfect for any dining room, lounge, or foyer. With smart, modern hardware and the subtle texture of the shade, this piece allows light to create layers of translucency. These dramatic swaths of fabric cut gracefully through the air, sails full of wind in a still room. The Drape Light comes in 78cm and 118cm both with the same width. The larger size adds more prominence to the piece, large drapes of knit material providing interesting views from every angle. The offset nature of the tubes is intentional, to fully take advantage of the organic swooping form of the shade.Jamie Wolfond is a designer deeply embedded in the concept of materiality. With an extensive portfolio in furniture, lighting, and everyday objects, Wolfond conveys the intricate within the ordinary by taking an observation from life and translating it into something transformative. Never ending where they began, hands-on experiments in the studio are essential to how the process works.Moooi is a lifestyle brand that specializes in premium furniture and home wares, establishing themselves as a go-to for contemporary and eclectic pieces. Occasionally rebellious and always unexpected, Moooi has led the way since 2001 offering a unique blend of creativity and beauty. For more on the Drape Light or Moooi, click here. Yves Salomon x Chapo Crations Exhibition Stuns in Paris
Unveiled at Paris Fashion Week, Yves Salomon, in collaboration with Chapo Cration, presented a series of reimagined pieces, including the L01 Bed, S31 Ottoman, S11 Chair, S10 Armchair, and the D19 Balance Arm Lamp, each adorned with distinctive shearling designs. Sustainability always at the forefront of design, the furniture requires no hardware, glue, or studs, and all shearling used was reclaimed material. The exhibition in Paris gave the viewer a behind the scenes look at the workshops that make the pieces, and the craftsmanship that goes into production from start to finish. A selection of the original pieces were also featured from the private collection by Yves Salomon and Tamara Taichman. All handmade, these designs mark the shared ethos of this collaboration a careful sourcing of exceptional materials, intergenerational knowledge, and an expert sensitivity to the details of luxury goods. The S31 Ottoman is unique in many ways. Also used as a seat or stool, the artful yet modern paths of color that make their way across the top are at once retro and of the moment. Paying homage to its early sixties roots, yet also embodying the refinement that weve come to know and love from Yves Salomon. All shearling details are handcrafted, highlighting the level of quality that is present throughout the whole collection. The S11 Chair, originally crafted in leather, gets a welcome refresh in this geometric, fuzzy version. Bold contrast and decorative pattern match the complicated joinery, adding interest to an already iconic form. The strict lines of the chair almost make the pattern feel even more whimsical, fun, and inviting for the viewer and user alike.Taking up space in a powerful way, the S10 Armchair wears its new coat well. The stripes, dots, and high contrast in the pattern feel fresh, but in a color palette thats much more seventies. In 2024, clever details and fun colors reign supreme. This collaboration embodies those ideals, and does so in an unexpected material as well. From slick leather to plush shearling, the new vibe is softer, more colorful, and more forgiving. The L01 Bed was originally designed as a special commission for writer Samuel Beckett in 1959. Also known as the Godot Bed, cleverly named after Becketts play Waiting for Godot. Renamed a couple years later, L01 would be known as an iconic piece of Chapos first collection in 1963. The bed is well-known for its simple and slightly strict lines, as well as the iconic box joints along the corners. Its versatility and restraint make it a stately convertible piece, working brilliantly as a bed, bench, or daybed. The D19 Balance Arm Lamp takes on a new shade, just as much in use whether it is on or off. A hanging cube of elegant proportion, the shade is upholstered with shearling as well. This allows no light to come through the shade, but instead to have the light escape through the top and bottom. For this special collaboration, Yves Salomon designed an intarsia lampshade casting warm light that shines on the lamps elm base, making it glow. For more information on the Yves Salomon x Chapo Cration collaboration, visit yves-salomon.com.Photography by Laora Queyras.

Bespoke Only Unveils a Living Portfolio in Clinton Hill Office Transformation
As the boundaries between work and personal life continue to blur, self-employed designers are at the forefront of creating innovative spaces that reflect their unique approach to both living and working. A prime example of this is Melissa Lee, founder of Bespoke Only, who has recently unveiled a new office space that doubles as a living portfolio of her design philosophy. Lee and her team have masterfully transformed the lower floors of her historic 1899 single-family residence into a 1,500-square-foot workspace. This reimagined space seamlessly blends functionality with aesthetics, embodying the minimalist elegance that characterizes Bespoke Onlys work while paying homage to the buildings rich heritage. The result is a harmonious fusion of past and present, where historic charm meets contemporary design sensibilities. This thoughtfully curated space not only serves as their dedicated work environment, but also stands as a testament to Lees creative vision, showcasing Bespoke Onlys ability to craft spaces that are both timeless and innovative. This creative sanctuary operates independently from the residential quarters above. The transformation, which began in the spring of that year, was driven by Lees unique position as both client and visionary, resulting in an environment that eschews the typical dynamism of their residential projects in favor of a serene, contemplative atmosphere. The entryway, framed by antique French doors, opens into a kitchen that balances understated luxury with historical elements. Espresso-stained oak cabinetry and black soapstone countertops are paired with a monolithic island in brushed stainless steel, creating a sleek, cohesive look. An antique French steel and alabaster chandelier adds a touch of heritage, juxtaposed against the contemporary finishes. Mid-century Danish chairs and an antique oak gateleg table provide a welcoming spot by the front bay window. At the rear of the parlor floor, the main work area features a custom steel-and-oak table accompanied by Branch desk chairs. A vintage pendant light suspended from a restored plaster medallion, along with newly installed No-Grec moldings, pays tribute to the buildings historical details. A portrait by artist Wole Lagunju, set between windows overlooking the garden, introduces a personal narrative, highlighting the studios appreciation for portraiture. We see the headquarters not only serves as a functional environment for the firms daily operation but also as an inspirational provenance, exemplifying the harmonious blend of simplicity, elegance, and historical reverence that defines Bespoke Only as a creative voice, says Melissa Lee.Antique and vintage pieces, carefully curated by Bespoke Only, are displayed throughout, showcasing the studios skill in blending different eras and styles. Highlights include a plush 1960s Ezio Longhi armchair, a 1940s Charles Dudouyt side table, an antique African stool, and a post-modern Soviet Union table lamp. These elements contribute to a workspace that is both refined and functional, fostering creativity while staying rooted in its historical context. To learn more about Bespoke Only and their projects, visit bespokeonly.com.Photography by William Jess Laird.

Hyde Hotel Bodrum Marries Historical Charm With Contemporary Luxury
At the confluence of the Aegean and wider Mediterranean seas but also ancient and contemporary times Bodrum is a coastal city in southwestern Turkey that serves as a first point of entry for an ever-expanding riviera dotted with trendy resorts, many of which have been designed in the almost antiseptic white cube architectural style now found everywhere else in the tropics and subtropics. Establishing a closer link to the ancient and multicultural origins of its surroundings a region centered around the seaside city, once called Halicarnassus is the freshly enlivened Hyde Hotel Bodrum. The sprawling 212-room luxury getaway perfectly nods to that deeply entrenched history while also answering the needs and desires of an ever-discerning clientele; all this within a pre-existing but entirely reprogrammed and renovated complex first erected in the aforementioned sleek and somewhat soulless architectural style. Situated along the highly prized but less overrun Torba Bay coastline, Hyde Hotel unfolds with a multi-level program of fluid indoor/outdoor amenity spaces that allow guests to retreat but also consciously connect with the context. Every spatial and aesthetic element was taken into close consideration by Istanbul-based interior architect Yeim Kozanli when striking this delicate balance. It was enjoyable to be part of a project where art and design run parallel and communicate with each other, says Kozanli. For her, the pared back minimalism inherent to the corporate identity of Accor Group Hyde Hotel Bodrums owner and operator served as the perfect anchor and backdrop for a more implicit site-responsive design scheme: a palette of terra and tide inspired earth tones; locally sourced materials and finishes; and a decidedly mid-century modern, organic vocabulary of form both evocative of and contrasting from the immediate landscape. Glass panels installed throughout the complex help establish an even connection between the indoors and outdoors and indicate the hotels energy efficiency.Kozanli describes the complex as a shell within a forest. Guests emerge from their intimate, serene, and Zen Scandicore guest rooms located in the cluster of four-story buildings to access the pool and innovatively cut-out courtyard atrium that forms within its midst. They eventually make their way down through a subterranean co-working lounge and out toward an amphitheater-style events area before reaching the lively beach club and private waterfront. The adults-only hotel balances out quieter and private areas with more active and socially oriented venues, and five distinct restaurants and bars. These environments are meant to facilitate easy meetings, the architect notes. Along the way, there are also private villas and even swim-up suites directly adjacent to the expansive pool.Theres a flow and fluidity of interconnected spaces that starts with the seemingly unencumbered progression from the main reception desk through to the lobby bar and terrace that looks out over the pool, she adds. The courtyard in the middle of the pool is a main axis point where guests can leave their living spaces and walk all the way out to the sea. The overall tired and embedded architectural scheme evokes the grandeur of ancient palaces but there are spaces like the French restaurant La Rebelle that reflect other reference points; in this case, the atmosphere of the Cte DAzur.Theres a festive vibe through the common areas, Kozanli concludes. Hyde Bodrum is more than just a luxury hotel; its a celebration of design, culture, and the unique spirit of the region. Every aspect of the hotel has been carefully crafted to provide guests with an unforgettable experience that embodies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of creativity while delivering exceptional comfort and style. What: Hyde Hotel BodrumWhere: Bodrum, TurkeyHow much: Guest rooms starting from $219Design draw: Hyde Hotel Bodrum artfully combines modern minimalism with the historical richness of its coastal surroundings in southwestern Turkey. Modern in design, yet a comforting and familiar sight to all who want to have it and eat it too.3. A New Office in Mumbai Highlights Sustainable Design
The Vibrant Group India, a leading real estate development company in Mumbai, specializes in apartments and commercial properties with an emphasis on todays eco-friendly living. The design by Sanjay Puri Architects reflects the organizations own portfolio and commitment to environmental stewardship. We wanted to convey their message of building green, says Sanjay Puri, founder and principal of his eponymous firm. The workspace is better known as Office@27, a nod to its location on the 27th floor in one of the more than 4,000 high rise buildings in Mumbai. Puri relied on Vastu principles to enhance the office. This ancient Indian system maintains that aligning a structure with five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space) and energy flow, it ensures harmony or here, a prosperous business. The architects focused on facets that would highlight the 20-foot ceilings, a rarity in the citys new buildings. The client initially liked the look of exposed steel beams. However, the designers preferred a solution that would minimize noise and boost acoustic comfort. They envisioned the often overlooked surface above as a unique canvas that they could actually decorate. The team sourced 400 cardboard tubes of various sizes from a local packaging factory. Covered with a fire-retardant coating, the cylinders placed overhead form a collage interspersed with lights that cast a soft glow. This surprising treatment set the tone for the rest of the project, which features sustainable materials throughout.Rather than specify ready-made pieces, all of the furniture and other fixtures were fabricated by craftsmen on site. Much of the leftover scraps were reused and transformed into key objects. The six main cabins that line the perimeter, plus the tables and credenzas inside, are made from recycled plywood strips. The partitions that surround the workstations in the center of the office are reminiscent of geometric art composed of wood and glass. Screens of cane and jute applied to some of the panels offer the right blend of transparency and privacy. Coiled light fixtures made of fabric double as modern sculptures that provide illumination.A breakout space at the far end of the workplace overlooks the city skyline, a place of respite for staff, who often sit at the counter perched on barstools to read or enjoy quiet time during the day. In the conference room, another installation of cardboard is the centerpiece, paired with a custom table and benches crafted of a lightweight concrete foam.Material and color palettes echo the soothing tints found in nature, paired with organic textures and shapes. Walls are finished with a matte lime plaster, and terrazzo flooring brings in a hint of sheen. The office not only has special touches, it also serves as inspiration for the staffs own work. Its a small space, but surrounded by glass. It is amazing to look out at all of the new construction and growth thats happening everywhere, Puri adds.To see more work by the architect, visit sanjaypuriarchitects.com.Photography by Vinesh Gandhi.

IMCOLLECTIVE Chooses Function Over Frills for Its Debut Collection
Kicking off the launch of their debut furniture line, architecture and design studio IMCOLLECTIVE, founded by Ins Moreira and Miguel Moreira, embraces modernist principles of design. The debut COLLECTIVE COLLECTION (COLLECTION) is stripped of any decorative embellishments, focusing instead on the intricacy and strength of wood joinery and the natural beauty of hardwood.COLLECTION consists of a rectangular dining table, round dining table, square stool, round stool, and bench all crafted from American ash hardwood, Canadian cedar, and Brazilian cedar. The natural color variance in wood brings attention to the joinery of each piece, inviting you to observe and admire the precision and details of the undersides. All of the made-to-order furniture is designed and built in Portugal, a country with a rich craftsmanship history. With its timelessness and simplicity, COLLECTION is designed to stand the test of time, bypassing trends and effortlessly blending into to a variety of interior styles. We caught up with founder Miguel Moreira to learn more about the studios creative process, the challenges he encountered to produce the COLLECTIVE COLLECTION, and what the studio is up to next:Your designs prioritize functionality and simplicity, hallmarks of modernist principles. How do you balance these elements while still creating pieces that feel unique and personal? From the beginning, our goal was to collaborate closely with skilled craftsmanship to create robust pieces with intricate wood joints. In fact, we initially started designing this collection for our own studio. It was a practical approach if we needed furniture, why not design it ourselves? After we placed the pieces in our studio, we noticed that people were really connecting with them and asking for more information. This led us to officially release the collection to the public. To mark the occasion, we launched the stool (available with a square or round top) to complement our existing tables and bench. We also opened an online shop. For us, its crucial to work consciously, so we only decided to launch the collection after testing the products in real environments for over a year. Weve used our furniture for work, hosting talks and workshops, and even for meals. Every piece is made to order, respecting the environment and natural resources, ensuring that we arent adding unnecessary products to the world. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the design and production process of your debut collection, and how did you overcome them?In the early stages, we faced a small issue where we needed to use screws to provide additional support. This setback turned out to be a valuable learning experience, as we were committed to creating a robust collection. Ultimately, we redesigned the pieces to eliminate the need for screws entirely, relying solely on wood joints. The final design not only solved the problem but also resulted in a piece we were even more pleased with. That eureka moment was quite memorable Ins and I (Miguel) were sketching out solutions in the middle of a field, with only a notebook and no internet access. We ended up discovering a better solution and an improved design.Regarding production, we operate on a small scale with made-to-order pieces. Our biggest challenge was finding the right production partner, but fortunately, Portugal is an excellent place for craftsmanship. Even Danish brands we admire produce their pieces here. Our collection is produced in the same workshops that create furniture for Pritzker Prize-winning architects lvaro Siza and Souto Moura.Looking ahead, how do you see IMCOLLECTIVE evolving? Are there any future projects or design directions that youre excited to explore?IMCOLLECTIVE is a creative studio mainly focused on architecture and graphic design, but product design is always present in our practice. We often design custom furniture for interior projects, and some of these pieces may eventually be available to the public. Its a great process, as these products are actively used, allowing us to assess their performance and make adjustments if necessary. We also have ideas wed like to explore with new materials. However, our primary focus is to release products thoughtfully only when we feel there is genuine interest and demand. Of course, were open to collaborating with other brands or designers who share our values and approach.Miguel Moreira and Ins Moreira, founders of IMCOLLECTIVETo learn more about the COLLECTIVE COLLECTION by IMCOLLECTIVE, visit imcollective.pt.Photography by Rui Freitas.

The Astell&Kern P1 Is Built for the Audiophile on the Go
Astell&Kern is known for its high-end portable music players, but the company is back with a slightly different take. The new Astell&Kern P1 is just as premium as its previous models, but unlike previous devices, this one is built for those with a more active lifestyle. So how does that manifest? Well, the player offers a more durable build and design elements that lend themselves better to quick control while on the go. The body is built with a combination of aluminum and polycarbonate, providing a smooth and comfortable feel while remaining grippy enough to hold easily. Not only that, but the buttons on each side of the player are uniquely shaped to allow users to control them by feel without having to look at them. Essentially, the P1 should be fully usable while its in your pocket without needing to take it out to look at the screen.Of course, its not all about the build quality though. As you would expect from Astell&Kern, the P1 boasts plenty of tech to make for better sound quality too. In fact, the player supports audio at up to 32-bit/384kHz, which is absolutely huge and more than the vast majority of listeners will ever need. This essentially means that each of the left and right channels gets its own dedicated DAC chip, which means that theres more balanced and vivid audio. The player has a USB DAC mode that you can use in conjunction with your Mac or Windows computer. In USB DAC mode, audio is sent from your computer to the P1 itself, which youll connect your headphones to, for better audio than you would get by connecting your headphones directly to your computer. The Astell&Kern P1 has Android built into it, with support for the Google Play Store, so you can download your favorite streaming apps or other apps if you want. It has 64GB of internal storage, but theres a microSD card slot that supports expanded storage of up to 1.5TB, which should be more than enough to store all your favorite high-res files. Under the hood, it has an octa-core processor that Astell&Kern claims maintains smooth operation, and it offers a battery life of up to 20 hours of listening. The Astell&Kern P1 digital audio player is available for $430 here. This post contains affiliate links, so if you make a purchase from an affiliate link, we earn a commission. The Red Rock House Is an Architectural Dialogue With the Desert
In the heart of Summerlin, Nevada, Faulkner Architects has designed the Red Rock residence in collaboration with Concept Lighting Lab as an extension of its natural environment. The home responds to the dramatic contrasts of its surroundings with views of the Las Vegas Strip to the east and the rugged Red Rock Canyon to the west. The scenic location, combined with the unforgiving climate of the Nevada desert, posed unique challenges and opportunities that shaped the design of the home. The result is a residence that reflects the deserts stark beauty while offering refuge from its extreme conditions.Situated on a three-quarter-acre lot, the house is designed to endure the punishing desert climate. The winds that sweep through the area are relentless, winters are cold and dry, and summers are blisteringly hot, punctuated by monsoon storms. These environmental factors necessitated a design approach that prioritizes protection from the elements while embracing the beauty of the landscape. At the same time, privacy and durability were key concerns, leading to a structure that is both robust and refined, minimalist yet deeply expressive. The house embraces a minimalistic design philosophy that echoes the simplicity of the desert. The layout utilizes a subtractive approach, carving out a wind-sheltered courtyard on the eastern side of the property. Here, an elevated basin of water reflects the architecture, offering a mirror image of the living space and subtly referencing the distant skyline of Las Vegas. This integration of water contrasts with the arid desert, symbolizing the fragile relationship between nature and urban development. The entryway to the home is designed to be an experience in itself. Visitors pass through a narrow opening in the massive concrete walls, which, at eye level with the basin, draws the eye to the reflection of the distant city. This threshold leads to a shaded and closed corridor that ramps up to a private entry courtyard. Open to the sky, this space is softened by a vertical garden of native desert plants, offering a serene transition from the outside world into the interior of the home. The architecture performs as a mediation between the rugged desert landscape and the more refined and controlled environment of the house. The material palette of the Red Rock House is intentionally restrained, relying on local materials that connect the building to its surroundings. The use of locally sourced sand, gravel, and fly ash to create concrete for the floors and walls gives the structure a natural buff hue that resonates with the distant mountains. These materials were chosen not just for their aesthetic qualities but also for their ability to endure the desert conditions. In the intense desert light, the concrete takes on a warm, sunlit tone that changes throughout the day.The upper-level sleeping areas are housed within a framework of perforated weathering steel. This screen not only protects the interior from the sun but also provides a measure of privacy while allowing for natural ventilation. The perforations in the steel create a dappled effect of light and shadow, adding a dynamic quality to the interior spaces as the sun moves across the sky.In a gesture that further integrates the house with its surroundings, over half of the built structure is located below ground level. This not only reduces the buildings visual impact on the site but also provides natural insulation from the extreme temperatures. Sunlight is introduced into these subterranean spaces through carefully placed openings, some of which are submerged below the water level of the basin, creating a dramatic interplay of light, shadow, and reflection throughout the day.The house is equipped with a range of energy-efficient systems, including a 45-kilowatt photovoltaic array that powers the home, high-efficiency glazing to reduce heat gain, and mechanical and lighting systems designed to minimize energy use. The roof, which is highly reflective, helps to mitigate the intense desert heat, while the design of the building itself maximizes natural ventilation and shading. On the south side of the house, a shaded deck extends out from the structure, offering a place to relax while being shielded from the intense heat of the desert sun. The deck, which is screened with perforated mesh, also serves to protect the house and the cars parked below from the elements. This thoughtful integration of shading devices and natural ventilation systems ensures that the house remains cool and comfortable even during the hottest days of summer. For more information on Faulkner Architects, click here, and for more from Concept Lighting Lab, click here.Photography by Joe Fletcher.

The STAK Lamp: A Modular Solution From Melt Mod
Tastes change. Fads fade. And with that, new styles take their place, in the ever revolving cycle of whats in. If there was a sustainable lighting solution that could change with your taste, would you flip that switch? The STAK Modular Lamp from Melt Mod is an elegant answer, with 3D-printed modules that can be interchanged and stacked in different configurations. Additive manufacturing and a PLA filament body make this a low waste option that can be remade and reconfigured infinitely. The STAK Modular Lamp comes in ceiling, sconce, and tabletop versions, looking right at home in any part of the house. Because the 3D-printed parts are made on demand of PLA, a plant-based bioplastic derived from sugarcane, the STAK lampshades are 100% commercially compostable. This allows Melt Mod to experiment with shapes that would be difficult to produce using traditional manufacturing, while using smart materials to reduce waste. In addition, Melt Mod pledges to only use plastic free, recycled packaging for all products. The STAK Modular Lamp looks equally elegant with a singular module as with seven. The modules, with a strong Scandinavian design influence, can be stacked and switched, changed and customized for a perfect fit. Small apartments, contemporary living rooms, and even professional spaces could benefit from a change in scenery once in a while, without the added expense of a new piece. And with six distinct shapes to choose from, the possibilities are basically endless. The shades form a stately, mid-century inspired diffuser that make up the STAK Modular Lamp. Adding a touch of warmth to an otherwise standard filament bulb, the light encapsulates the Scandinavian design principles of warmth and coziness, or hygge. Within a relatively muted color palette, some stars shine: a rich terra cotta module, another a dusty blue. These hues, which include Sienna, Moss, Slate, and Sand, come together to form a cohesive, creative collection.Since the STAK Modular Lamp is made to be installed on the ceiling, wall, or rest as a table lamp, all pieces come together and apart with ease. Convertible and customizable, the pieces fit together and snap, super intuitive for anyone who might not be familiar with lighting specifics. Here we can see an exploded view of the STAK Modular Lamp, clearly detailing just how neatly the modules stack together. As always, the design is in the details, with cleverly hidden snap points and beautifully integrated installation hardware. No longer will the industrial L-bracket ruin our beautifully curated silhouettes.Melt Mod is an emerging furniture brand, launching on Kickstarter this month and quickly earning a Projects We Love badge within the first two days. They specialize in 3D-printed lighting, the STAK Modular Lamp being the first of hopefully many more. The STAK Modular Lamp was inspired by a desire to bring more flexibility, creativity and usefulness to home decor, says Melt Mod founder Neil Kupras. The goal was to create something that feels approachable, yet sophisticated, and versatile enough to fit any room.To support Melt Mod on Kickstarter, click through to their campaign here. Casamontesa Enlists Urban Aesthetics for a Mountain Retreat in Spain
Nestled in the scenic western mountains near Madrid, Spain, Casamontesa, designed by Lucas y Hernndez-Gil of Kresta Design, stands at the crossroads of nostalgia and modern design. Originally built in the 1970s as part of a hotel complex, the bungalow exhibits an intriguing fusion of rustic charm and mid-century modern aesthetics, wrapped in a touch of kitsch. Despite its quirky elements, the house has retained its character, which became the focal point of a careful redesign. The owners, a dynamic young couple from the bustling center of Madrid, sought a retreat that combined modern comfort with a deep connection to the surrounding natural beauty. Their desire was clear: a compact yet functional space that harmonized with its lush garden and offered a tranquil escape from city life. Addressing both the architectural and interior design challenges, the goal was to reshape the home in a way that enhanced its relationship with the outdoors while making the interiors more spacious and functional.A key aspect of the renovation was reimagining the windows. The design team created large, recessed frames that not only bring more light into the house but also transform the views into framed works of art, highlighting the beauty of the natural surroundings. These deep window boxes are a distinctive feature of the renovation, providing a sense of openness and integration with the landscape.Inside, a custom kitchen island became the centerpiece of the home, serving multiple functions: a space for cooking, dining, and even working. This multifunctional island, anchors the interior design and serves as a gathering point, emphasizing the open-plan layout of the house. To create a sense of cohesion, the designers employed handmade burgundy tiles to line both the window recesses and the kitchen island. The glossy surface of these tiles contrasts with the homes other materials, including Campaspero stone floors and waxed plaster walls, which offer a muted, textured backdrop to the vibrant tiles. This interplay of textures and finishes adds depth and richness to the overall aesthetic. For more information on Lucas y Hernndez-Gil of Kresta Design, click here.Photography by Jos Hevia.

The Leica M11-D Takes the Distractions Out of Photography For a Price
Leica has once again combined nostalgia with modern technology in its latest release, the Leica M11-D. This camera is designed for photographers seeking a purer, more tactile experience without sacrificing the signature Leica quality. The M11-D embraces simplicity, removing distractions while maintaining the Leica tone that has earned the brand its legendary status.Distraction-Free ShootingThe M11-D is the newest model in Leicas range of minimalist M series cameras. Essentially a display-less version of the M11-P, it encourages photographers to focus on the art of image composition, rather than getting bogged down by digital distractions. Its design is a nod to the past, yet it delivers a sleek, modern aesthetic. While it may not entirely match the earlier concept design, its visual appeal is undeniable.Leica has a reputation for building cameras that not only perform well but are also a joy to use. The M11-D exemplifies this philosophy, offering a minimalistic, tactile black finish with a scratch-resistant aluminum top plate. The classic Leica logo sits on the top, accompanied by essential controls such as shutter speed and ISO dials. For those who value a hands-on approach to photography, the M11-D delivers a fully manual experience, encouraging users to take the time to fine-tune their settings.By omitting a display, Leica aims to reduce the urge to adjust every possible setting and instead shift the focus back to the basics aperture, shutter speed, and ISO allowing photographers to engage more with their compositions.Of course, without the display, there are some feature omissions. The camera is purely manual focus, and it cant record video, for example. That said, if you really must mess around with settings on a screen, you still can. To do so, all youll need to do is connect the camera to your phone and open up the Leica Fotos app, which is available for iOS and Android. From there, youll be able to adjust settings, download images, and even control the camera remotely.High-Tech Features in a Minimalist PackageDespite its stripped-down appearance, the M11-D is far from low-tech. It retains the core features of the standard M11, including the impressive 60-megapixel BSI CMOS full-frame sensor. Photographers can choose from three shooting modes: 60, 36, or 18 megapixels, depending on their file size preferences. The camera also boasts a 3GB buffer, allowing continuous shooting at up to 5 frames per second, and it comes with 256GB of internal storage, expandable via an SDXC card slot.Built for Photography EnthusiastsAs with most Leica products, the M11-D caters to a niche market. Its appeal lies in its minimalism, but that comes at a premium price. At $9,395 for the body alone, its even more expensive than the M11-P. And, of course, lenses are sold separately.Still, I cant help but absolutely love the look of the camera. Does anyone have a spare $10K I can borrow? The Leica M11-D is now available via Leicas website and in Leica stores.

Designed by Daniel Nikolovski, who hails from Skopje, North Macedonia a city known for its brutalist architecture the bifunctional glassware makes it easy to say yes to another drink. The minimalist drinkware is characterized by a cone-shape form thats fixed atop a cylindrical base, recalling the familiar silhouette of a martini glass. F5: George Smart on His Favorite Modernist Residential Architecture
Durham, North Carolina-based George Smart spent three decades as a management consultant for Fortune 500 companies like Boeing, Microsoft, and Cisco. While he was well-compensated, it was less than fulfilling work for someone who wanted to make a difference. There were some wonderful smaller clients, but most of the large organizations wanted to say that they tried to fix problems, rather than actually fixing them, says Smart. While researching design ideas for a new family home, Smart discovered a surprising scarcity of online resources. He decided to build his own library, and so NCModernist, and later USModernist, were born. It is the worlds largest nonprofit educational archive dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and promotion of Modernist residential design.George SmartA passionate advocate for Modernism, Smart realized that there were plenty of fellow enthusiasts out there when he hosted his first house tour. He expected maybe 50 people to attend, but 250 people showed up instead, which was a game-changer. To date, 165 tours have been held across the globe, from the United States to Europe and the Middle East (plus 130 local Thirst4Architecture social gatherings), attracting tens of thousands.Smart has plenty of tasks to keep track of, yet instead of utilizing his computer, he prefers to keep an old-school legal pad by his desk. He creates a to-do list, and by Sunday hes cleared it, ready for the next one.Bringing Modernism to the masses has been rewarding for Smart, who gets thanked every day by people who use the archive and discover something about their family, or find inspiration for their new or renovated house projects. He likes to touch base when he can, making calls often and responding to emails he receives within a day. People are amazed and delighted, because were all so used to getting voicemail; waiting, waiting, and waiting, or being ghosted entirely, Smart notes. There have been so many wonderful opportunities from simply answering the phone.Today, George Smart joins us for Friday Five!Photo: Ezra Stoller1. Eduardo Catalano HouseThe Eduardo Catalano House (1954), often referred to as the Potato Chip House, is sadly no longer with us. With a hyperbolic paraboloid roof, the house quickly gained worldwide notoriety for its revolutionary design. Virtually every architect on the planet knew about this distinctive, daring, swooping shape in sleepy Raleigh, North Carolina. The roof, constructed of 2.5-inch-thick laminated wood, spanned an impressive 4,000 square feet resting on only two points, creating a spacious, open interior of about 1,700 square feet flooded with natural light. There are just two rooms, a main room and a bathroom. In 1956, House and Home Magazine proclaimed it the House of the Decade, a testament to its groundbreaking design. Even the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, known for his dislike of everyones work except his own, praised the house. Unfortunately, due to neglect and vandalism and an incompetent roofing contractor, it was ultimately destroyed in 2001.The house remains an enduring symbol of mid-century modern architecture, and is my inspiration for creating USModernist to prevent other livable works of art from being destroyed.Photo: Bates Masi + Architects2. Harry Bates HouseBates was a well-known and exceptionally talented architect with a legacy of brilliant homes in the Hamptons and on Fire Island. Fun fact: Harry dated my mom way back in the 1950s before coming out as gay, which he was, even before it was remotely socially acceptable. Harry was a gentle, caring man who could distill the essence of a person or family and translate that flawlessly to a house design. He designed an immaculate small retirement house for himself (2017) in Fernandina Beach, Florida. I got to spend some quality time with him in this remarkable house a few years before he died. With two bedrooms and one bathroom, the house completely hides itself from the street. One might mistake it for a shed. Once inside, however, you see the master at work.Photo: Joe Fletcher3. Desert OneHidden away in the Racquet Club area of Palm Springs, California, is Desert One (2005) designed by Jim Jennings. It is a stunning small residence that, like the Catalano House, has only one bedroom and one bathroom. This is my favorite example of timeless desert Modernism. You cant really tell how old it is; it could have been built in 1955, 1975, or 1995.Meticulously sited on over half an acre of wild desert terrain, this jewel of a house ensures privacy and preserves the natural beauty of its surroundings. Like the Harry Bates House, it is quite unassuming from the street. Even though the residence itself clocks in at a mere 720 square feet, the enclosed courtyard and pool expands the livable area as a private haven or a fabulous party space. I have a photo of this house on my wall, and I would buy it in a second.Photo: Courtesy Beau Monde Villas4. Frank Sinatra HouseThe Frank Sinatra House (1947), designed by E. Stewart Williams, is one of the most iconic homes in Palm Springs, California. This is a house that screams style, its the epitome of cool. A two-story, L-shaped structure with a flat roof and large windows with panoramic views of the mountains and the Coachella Valley, youre immersed in old Hollywood glamor on a huge lot in a posh neighborhood.Singer and actor Frank Sinatra lived there with Ava Gardner, and the stories of their passionate, tumultuous relationship are legendary. In the master bathroom, the story goes, the crack in the sink is where Ava threw a bottle of champagne at ol Frankie and missed. The Sinatra House is a must-see for anyone interested in mid-century modern architecture and is open to visitors several times a year, especially during Modernism Week, when you can also attend parties there.Photo: Courtesy USModernist5. Atkinson HouseThe Atkinson House (1959) is little known, despite its spectacular location near the Bixby Bridge near Carmel. Designed by Gregory Ain with African-American architect James Garrott, this is one of the most beautiful home sites in America. Because of his advocacy of racial equality in public houses, Ain was investigated for years by the FBI, as were many civil rights leaders at the time. For years the house was owned by Allen Funt of Candid Camera fame.Photo: TK Images for Martha Turner Sothebys International RealtyBONUS: Darth Vader HouseThe Darth Vader House (1992) in Houston, Texas, designed by Lynn Spears, is a delightful departure from the ordinary. In a class by itself, the house was commissioned by Star Wars fan Jean Cukier. The house has taken that name because from the front it looks like Lord Vaders helmet. Neighbors are currently not too happy about the frequent visitors who line up to take Instagram selfies, or the parties held at the house. Well worth a drive-by, or it can be yours, as it is up for sale as of July 2024.

But look closer, and youll notice its extra-thick, 50 mm tabletop and solid ash wood legs that make it anything but ordinary. Tidones legs can be positioned in two ways. Mount them at the ends for a contemporary, minimalist look, or set them on the inside for a more traditional vibe. This subtle design tweak makes Tidone incredibly versatile. Additionally, the asymmetrical, truncated cone design not only makes the legs stand out but it also enhances the tables serious stability and functionality. Available in colors like algae, amaranth, espresso, and oak-stained ash, this table is a chameleon, easily blending into different interior styles. If sleek and stylish is your aesthetic, say hello to Zavolo. Inspired by the clean lines and precision of aviation design, this collection of coffee tables and consoles takes your space to new heights literally. Available in heights from 30 cm (for the coffee table) to 75 cm (for the console), the collection features a distinctive inverted Y cross at its base. Its not just a visual statement; this structure offers extra strength and originality to each piece. What sets Zavolo apart is the meticulous material choices. With its MDF structure and a matte lacquer finish, it comes in a rainbow of contemporary hues, including talc, wax, hemp, caramel, orange, amaranth, meadow green, lilac, espresso, and black. This collection delivers a bold blend of strength, elegance, and a bit of playfulness, making it perfect for those who love to make a statement without saying a word.Zavens BOL table, introduced in 2023, is back with an exciting twist. This years model features a back-painted glass top, giving the design a fresh, polished feel while maintaining the signature asymmetrical legs that make BOL a modular marvel. Whether you opt to use singular legs or multiply to create unique configurations, BOL offers flexibility and style in one streamlined package. Finally, the Tweed table, originally introduced by Garcia Cumini in 2017, gets a facelift this year with fresh sizes and colors to choose from. Available in rich tones like anthracite, hemp, and amaranth, this version in matte lacquered MDF adds even more contemporary flair to the original design. For smaller spaces or cozy corners, the Tweed Mini offers all the style in a low-profile form perfect for modern living rooms or compact apartments.Zanotta has once again delivered a collection thats both forward-thinking and timeless, proving that tables are much more than just a surface for your coffee cup. Modern Bohemia: A Collection Rooted in Litchfields Modernist Legacy
When you think of Litchfield, Connecticut, images of charming colonial architecture and tree-lined streets probably come to mind. However, if you dig a little deeper, youll find an unexpected mid-century modernist gem quietly woven into this New England towns rich fabric. And its this hidden legacy that has inspired the latest Dumais Made collection, Modern Bohemia.Ceramicist Charlie Dumais, co-founder of Dumais Made, has long been influenced by the principles of modernism rationality, order, and clean lines which happen to align perfectly with the works of architectural greats like Marcel Breuer. Though Litchfield is primarily known for its colonial homes, Breuer and his contemporaries (Eliot Noyes, Edward Larrabee Barnes, and others) left a modernist mark here that few might expect. Dumais taps into this mid-century spirit with Modern Bohemia, an 18-piece collection of ceramic lighting, furniture, and accessories seven of which were created exclusively for Design Within Reach.B32 Vessel II glazed in Walnut, B32 Vessel III glazed in Chalk, and Stack Nesting Tray glazed in OchreB32 Vessel II glazed in Walnut, B32 Vessel III glazed in Chalk, and Stack Nesting Tray glazed in OchreSo how does a sleepy New England town become a muse for a forward-thinking collection like this? It all began when Dumais and his husband, Kevin, moved to Litchfield nine years ago and found himself introduced to its surprising modernist undercurrent through friends and neighbors. Breuers work specifically left a lasting impression. Dumais shares with Design Milk the endearing backstory:We met Kyra and Roberston Hartnett, (founders of Twenty2 Wallpaper and Textiles) at a small caf in town. We were friends on Instagram and thats how we recognized each other in person. Their house, Gagarin II was hard to miss in Kyras posts and there was definitely a mystery to it. I didnt want to ask them outright if they lived in a Breuer house, I didnt know them well enough to be that brash, but I was curious. Then they invited us over for drinks one evening and we got the tour. If you know them, you know the tour. The house, of course, is stunning, a treasure, and it has been meticulously, lovingly cared for. They sweat every detail when it comes to the architecture, but they really live in this house. Its a home. And I think that is what was most striking to me, the warmth, the ease, and the coziness they infused within it. Modernist architecture is almost always viewed, but not felt. It lacks emotion and approachability. But with their home, I immediately related to this juxtaposition. I love the logic and order of modernism and brutalism. It speaks to the structured methods of slab building and our aesthetic, but also to the softer, natural qualities of clay and glaze that soften the edges and celebrate the organic imperfections.Tall Tunnel Table Lamp glazed in ChalkModern Bohemia feels like Dumais love letter to this unique blend of natural beauty and modernist architecture. Every piece pays homage to Breuers architectural works in the area, from the funnel-shaped fireplaces of Gagarin House I (which inspired the Funnel Table Lamps, Stack Floor Lamp, and Stack Side Table) to the angled rooflines of Gagarin House II, reimagined in the Pitch Sconce and Pitch Trays. The Torin Mirrors and Torin Sculpture are directly inspired by Breuers 1953 Torin Factory facade in Torington. The use of color, texture, and relief also takes cues from Breuers Bauhaus-inspired furniture. For instance, the B32 Vessels and Stack Nesting Trays feature hand-applied reliefs that are a nod to Breuers revolutionary cane and tubular steel chair.Tall Tunnel Table Lamp glazed in Ochre and Pitch Tray glazed in Verdigris at Gagarin II, whose pitched roofline inspired its designJuicebox Lamp glazed in Ultramarine, a color exclusive to this collection inspired by Calders signature use of primary colorsWhile Breuer plays a significant role in the collection, fellow artist Alexander Calder also makes an impact. The rich blue, ultramarine glaze that makes a bold appearance in the Juice Box Lamp and Perforated Wall Sconce was a thoughtful choice, a tribute to the murals painted by Calder for the Stillman House, another modernist treasure in Litchfield County.Funnel Table Lamp glazed in OchreTo bring the vision of Modern Bohemia full circle, Dumais chose to shoot the collection on location at Gagarin II, an idea Dumais had long explored and made possible through his collaboration with Design Within Reach. He shares with us further:Like any relationship, it starts with a first date. Lucky for us, Design Within Reach is also Connecticut based, and we invited them over to our studio to meet us and take a class. Its really a treat to experience the transformation in students from the moment they roll up their sleeves, to getting their hands dirty and then accomplishing something few believe they can do. Its disarming and fun and you do feel like friends after. I think Debbie Probst actually punched me in the arm at the end (playfully of course). They built vases, and trays in various scales, and some even made more than one piece. I had prepared maquettes and illustrations and research on modernism in Litchfield and thats when I pitched the idea of the collection. We discussed forms, finishes, direction, and concept. Their feedback was thoughtful, and enthusiastic, and from there, the process was organic and effortless.Pitch Sconce glazed in OchreFunnel Floor Lamp glazed in OchreFunnel Floor Lamp glazed in OchreWhen the day came to finally shoot the Modern Bohemia collection in homes designed by Breuer, Dumais was excited, to say the least. It was certainly cathartic. I knew that first night at their house we would become fast friends with the Hartnetts, but never imagined this moment. That morning while the team set up, I stood in Kyras bathroom chatting with her while she got ready, shares Dumais. Meanwhile, Robertson was very determined to get us access to the Sonos before they left with Marcel, their Wheaton Terrier puppy, for work. Their daughters were floating in and out running errands, getting to their lessons, making their lunch, a salad for Ella and an ice cream Sunday for Hollis. All this happening while I got to pretend to live there. And just like my mother, I followed everyone around with a coaster.Funnel Floor Lamp glazed in WalnutWith this partnership with Design Within Reach, Modern Bohemia is available for those who want to bring a touch of Litchfields hidden architectural history into their own homes and appreciate thoughtful design, modernist influence, and a story behind the craft. After all, the collection is as much about heritage as it is about the future.Marcel Breuer and his peers ushered in a different way of living and a new culture of creativity in Litchfield. I wouldnt say I am immersed in this heritage. Im just a fan and this is a tribute to the architecture, and its relationship to the landscape within the greater context of our quintessentially New England town, says Dumais about continuing Litchfields modernist heritage. Litchfield has an incredibly rich creative community, but like modernism, it remains an undercurrent. We built our studio within the Bantam Arts Factory where we work alongside a growing number of talented artists and makers. I hope this collection, our team, and our continued work celebrates modernism and Litchfield through a new lens, with a greater reach.Torin Sculpture glazed in VerdigrisFunnel Table glazed in ChalkFunnel Table glazed in ChalkFunnel Side Table glazed in Chalk, Walnut, and OchreTo shop the Modern Bohemia collection by Dumais Made, visit dwr.com and dumaismade.com.Photography by Allegra Anderson. This post contains affiliate links, so if you make a purchase from an affiliate link, we earn a commission. Bluesound NODE Series Blends Hi-Fi Audio With Wireless Tech
You no longer have to choose between upscale Hi-Fi audio and modern wireless technology. Companies like Bluesound have been slowly but surely building higher-end tech into their new products, and the latest and greatest Bluesound NODE series is a perfect embodiment of that. The series featuring the NODE, NODE NANO, and NODE ICON carries on the legacy of the original NODE, launched a decade ago. The devices are built to integrate seamlessly with wireless home audio systems while connecting to top-grade speakers. Each model supports Apple AirPlay 2, aptX Adaptive Bluetooth, and offers direct streaming from services like Amazon Music, Tidal, and Spotify. With the inclusion of ESS Sabre DACs, the NODE series delivers high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Additionally, the devices offer both wireless and wired connectivity, with more options available on the larger, more expensive NODE models.Bluesound NODEBluesound NODE NANOBluesound NODE ICONBluesounds commitment to design and audio quality is evident in the NODE series sleek appearance and premium build. For a deeper understanding of the design process behind the NODE series, we spoke with Bluesound Product Manager Morten Nielsen. What are the challenges associated with designing audio tech thats built to bring together a customers audio needs like the NODE series does? With the NODE, our sole mission is to connect listeners with all their favorite music at the highest possible sound quality and without network interference, no matter where it lives. This is the challenge since home networks are very complicated, with lots of technologies and wireless activity working side by side. We also want the user experience to be as seamless as possible, so lots of energy goes into our product designs to limit circuit interference and ensure uncompromised music performance on any network. How do modern technologies shape design as it relates to a system like NODE?Advancing modern technologies make it much easier to go from ideas to design that we can touch and feel. Our design and engineering team is inspired by bringing Hi-Fi quality streaming to everyday life since our products live in the homes of many different people and lifestyles. Our team relies on 3D printing and foam models in the very early stage of product design to help bring our vision to life. With expert engineering and a deep pedigree in audio design, we continue to pursue new ways to innovate our products, from board layouts to technologies that improve performance or simplify production. Is it difficult to design something thats appealing to old-school audiophiles and newer customers that might be more willing to embrace wireless tech? Why or why not?It is always a challenge to design lifestyle-orientated products that appeal to a wide consumer base that includes both audio enthusiasts and music lovers. As a brand with a rich Hi-Fi pedigree and decades of audio research and development, our design team has a deep understanding of the needs and wants that is carefully balanced with our philosophy for home audio. We also pride ourselves on our listening commitment and working closely with partners to better understand customers and how we could improve our products. In a world of cheap wireless speakers like the Amazon Echo, how does design play into convincing potential customers to switch to a higher-end and better-sounding system?A lot of hours and thought goes into the design of our products. We dont want to blend too much in, and we dont want to overdesign our stuff. Many times our design is a reflection of what is needed for a product to perform its best. First, we determine what is exactly needed for a product to work and then create a design around that. Instead of designing a product and then trying to make it work afterwards. We are well recognized for our audio and build quality, but we strive to push beyond these expectations and design speakers and stereo components that deliver more, like presets for app-free playback and control of your favorite music and sources. How important is software design as opposed to hardware design for a system like those in the NODE series? They are both are equally important. We need good hardware for the software to run smooth, and in order for our developers to continue to improve our products over time with updates. The original NODE broke through more than 10 years ago, backed by a powerful processor that we are still able to update with the latest features and technologies today. We try to design products for today and tomorrow, and that goes for hardware and software. The NODE NANO comes at $299, the standard NODE costs $549, and the NODE ICON is $999. The new Bluesound NODE series is available now and for more information, visit bluesound.com.
