  • Hang On, Are People More Excited For Tomodachi Life Than Switch 2?
    www.nintendolife.com
The Japanese reveal tweet suggests so...Last week's surprise Nintendo Direct might not have been the showcase of wall-to-wall bangers that we had hoped for, but it still held its fair share of surprises perhaps the biggest of which was Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.Sure, it had been rumoured for years, but we never really thought the Tomodachi Life series would be making a comeback on Switch. But it's real, it's coming next year and, according to the Japanese announcement tweet, people are rather hyped for it (thanks, VGC).Read the full article on nintendolife.com

  • UK Charts: Old Favourites Keep Nintendo In The Race As Xenoblade Plummets From Top 10
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeWell, that was somewhat short-lived. After briefly witnessing a new Nintendo release on the podium, the Big N's latest has seen quite the fall in its second week.Yes, last week's silver medal wasn't enough to keep Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition in the race this time, with the latest RPG dropping all the way down to 13th. Assassin's Creed Shadows continues to kill off the rest of the competition from the top spot, and Fireshine's British apocalyptic survivor, Atomfall, debuts at number two.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube801kWatch on YouTube This leaves Nintendo's old faithful to pick up the slack, once again. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Minecraft keep chugging along in seventh and eighth, while Hello Kitty Island Adventure starts strong on Switch and debuts in 10th.But that's quite enough chit-chat. • Nier Automata's Dev Was "Ordered" To Ignore What The West Thinks Of His Game
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Square EnixNier Automata is widely regarded as one of the finest action games in recent years thanks to its remarkably compelling gameplay and deceptively deep storytelling. In a new interview with AV Watch (thanks, Automaton), PlayStation vet Shuhei Yoshida went so far as to credit Automata as the "game that changed everything". He said that it effectively reversed the Japanese game industry's fortunes after years of struggle during the late 2000s and early 2010s when it tried too hard to appeal to Western tastes.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube801kWatch on YouTube Yoshida said "I think Yoko Taro (director) created it without paying any mind at all to making it sell overseas, but it was a tremendous success". Indeed, these words echo the sentiments of Masahiro Sakurai, who recently stated the importance of Japanese developers making games with domestic appeal rather than overseas appeal.Yoko Taro went one step further, however, and claimed on social media that he was actually ordered by producer Yosuke Saito to ignore what the West would ultimately think of his game."I'm honored that Automata is being praised, but it was Saito-P who ordered me to 'make it for the Japanese market without worrying about overseas reviews'.To be more precise, I remember him saying something like, 'You can't make a game for overseas, so (at least) do your best to make it for Japan'."Saito responded to this statement to soften the message somewhat, saying:What I said at the time went more like this:"Since were Japanese people, theres no need for us to go out of our way to cater to people overseas. Surely, well be able to attract at least a million players among all the people out there who genuinely want to play a Japanese game made by a Japanese person (the one and only Yoko Taro).Whatever the task was at the time, we think it's safe to say that the resulting game was an absolute banger, and well-deserving of its enduring praise. When we reviewed it for the Nintendo Switch, we called it a "modern classic" and awarded it a score of 9/10. • Octopath Traveler I + II Physical Switch Bundle Announced
    www.nintendolife.com
I had initially placed an order with Play-Asia, but they cancelled my order due to stock shortages, though the second listing recently appeared so you have a shot with that.I ended up securing a copy through Videogamesplus, but sadly it looks like they've already sold through their stock.@Wool_SheepSquare Enix have put out a few full on-cart releases like this in the "Asia" region, which aren't Japanese releases but apparently intended for markets like Singapore where internet access to download updates or full games isn't a guarantee.Their release of Final Fantasy X & X-2 for example, most territories has X-2 as a download code, but the Asia region release (and apparently also the Japanese release) actually has both on-cart. It's one of the rare 32GB Switch cartridges, which are expensive to manufacture so publishers often avoid going for it unless there's a good reason. These Asia region imports that end up having all content on-cart with multi-language support are understandably quite popular.

  • Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition?
    www.nintendolife.com
X/10.Recently, we crossed one of the last remaining Wii U winners off our Switch port list thanks to the arrival of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. We'd waited a long time to extol the virtues of this excellent entry to people who never picked up a Wii U, and the wait, thankfully, was worth it. PJ awarded the Switch edition an 'Outstanding' 10/10 in his review, calling it "an absolute must-play" that ranks "up there with the all-time great sci-fi RPGs".Read the full article on nintendolife.com

  • Poll: Box Art Brawl: Tomodachi Life
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeWell, that's been quite the week, huh? Let's chill out with another edition of Box Art Brawl.Last time, we saw two covers for NSO newbie Nobunaga's Ambition go head-to-head, and it's got to be said, it wasn't even close. The epic Japanese art comfortably walked away with the win, taking 74% of the vote and leaving North America with the remaining 26%.This week, hot off the announcement of Living the Dream, we're taking a look at Tomodachi Life on the 3DS. Some were a little surprised to see this series make a comeback in the Switch's final years, but let's not forget that it was a pretty big hit back in the day. Originally released in 2014, Nintendo's Mii-based slice-of-life sim still sits in the top 10 best-selling 3DS games, with a tasty 6.72 million copies sold. Heck, it was only a matter of time before we got a comeback. There are three different covers to dive into this time, so let's check 'em out. The meaning of lifeEuropeImage: Nintendo / LaunchboxThe European design for Tomodachi Life shows, well, life. A bunch of Miis stand against a spotty blue background, going about daily tasks like playing with the dog, sports, eating dinner... uhh, dressing up as a panda? Maybe not the most applicable example, but it certainly gives a good idea of what the game's all about and even if it didn't there's a whopping great summary at the bottom.North AmericaImage: NintendoThe North American design takes the same principle as the EU one, but dials it up to 11. There are more Miis, more activities, more space dedicated to the logo. While we're not convinced that we like the new icon more than the one used in Europe it gives the vibes of an early social media messaging service we are fans of the increased Mii numbers.JapanImage: Nintendo / Launch BoxAt an initial glance, the Japanese cover appears much the same as Europe, but some noteworthy differences convinced us it deserves an entry of its own. A handful of the Mii activities have changed, with painting, applying makeup and having a baby now included. The previous blue background has been subbed out for more of a teal, and the logo now includes some tiny house and character icons. Subtle changes, but pretty sweet.Which region got the best Tomodachi Life box art? (131 votes)Europe26%North America54%Japan20%Thanks for voting! • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate 'Balance Of Power' Update Now Live
    www.nintendolife.com
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kSuper Evil Megacorp has this week released its 'Balance of Power' update for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate. This is a massive update adding boss updates, control improvements, bug fixes and much more. The team also has much more planned for 2025. Here's the full rundown via the official Steam page:Balance of Power Update:"This Community Update brings boss and power balancing tweaks to make fights more fun and fair, along with key bug fixes and progression improvements to keep your runs feeling rewarding. Our goal is to make TMNT: Splintered Fate the best version it can be."Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWatch on YouTube Boss UpdatesWe have rebalanced the various bosses to better reflect the position they appear in the campaign. Karai was a bit more ruthless than her grandfather Shredder, so both have been adjusted to be easier and more challenging, respectively. Leatherhead also received adjustments to his Amphibian Ambush encounter whilst Gigi from our Junkyard Jam DLC has received a slight adjustment to make her a little more fair.KaraiImproved warning on the first Dash, adding 0.3s to itPreviously it was 0.4s, now 0.7sReduced her period of invulnerability after performing her Rage attackThis is the one she uses after her rage bar is full (round kunai explosion where she yells)Previously, she was invulnerable for the full duration of the animationNow she becomes vulnerable right after the kunai come out, providing a great opportunity to counter attackSuper Shadow (Hard Mode)Shadow Flames should be slightly easier to dodge;Reduced Movement Speed by 20%Reduced Rotation SpeedFire Bomb radius decreased to be slightly lower than Mystic Karais version rather than of slightly biggerAdds now spawn separately, first at 75% and then 50% of Karai's HPMystic Karai (Flame variant)Decreased size of Mystic Karai's Flames by ~30%Leatherhead (Punk Frog version)Reviewed all Punk Frog spawns in order to:Avoid exaggerated overlappingReduce their total numbers (you should expect to see 50% less Punk Frogs overall)GigiGigis chop and 360 spin attack now has a bigger windupThis is to make it more reactable to players, right now it's too fastIncrease was +0.55s (from 0.45s to 1.0s)ShredderReviewed all adds, which now follow the following logicAt the start of battle, Shredder gets help from basic Footclan enemies for the first ~20 secondsNo elites, just Sword, Shuriken and Spear Foot SoldiersOnce he transitions to the second phase, different Foot Soldiers will spawn depending on which Elemental variant Shredder transitions toAstral summons a mix of Flame and Shadow NinjasFire summons all Flame NinjasNinja summons a mix of Shuriken NinjasWater summons Spear NinjasUtrom summons SwordbrakersOoze summons all Shadow NinjasShredder's Leap during Phase 3 has also been modifiedNow instead of always leaping twice, he'll do a first leap and then 1 out of 4 possible follow up optionsAnother Leap (as it was previously)Shadow Fracture (shadow flames on the ground)Shadow Pursuit (gets on the ground and moves while intangible)Shadow Kick (flying kick)Dragon and Dreamer Coin Economy ImprovementsAcross the board, we have significantly reduced the cost of Dragon and Dreamer coin upgrades. We want to encourage more build experimentation by making upgrading additional Artifacts a more achievable goal. In addition, some of the meta currency requirements (Shredders Claw, Gauntlet Coin, etc) have been adjusted in the costs.Artifacts with 5 additional levels have had costs reduced as followsLevel 2: Was 250 reduced to 150Level 3: Was 400 reduced to 200Level 4: Was 700 reduced to 300Level 5: Was 1000 reduced to 400Level 6: Was 1500 reduced to 600Artifacts with 2 additional levels have had costs reduced as followsLevel 2: Was 500 reduced to 300Level 3: Was 1000 reduced to 600*Note, Artifacts are unlocked at level 1 via gameplayPowers and ToolsWe are aware of the power of builds such as Critical Strike, Shurikens and Ooze, and instead of focusing on nerfs, we have decided to adjust all the other power trees to perform better! We want players to feel like they have more freedom in pursuing build options that are totally radical, rather than feel like they need to play the same few builds to tackle the hardest content. In turn, this will also make the experience of the many runs you make much smoother, as there is a much better chance of putting a winning build together. We hope players can discover new and exciting build combinations to try out!ToolsWe want some of the weaker tool options to feel more viable, so were making a number of improvements here.Utrom ShurikensNow releases 4 shuriken, up from 2.Fixed a problem with a delay issue between the releases of Shuriken.Lightning RodLightning Rod will now behave more consistently, and strike more targets, making it more powerful.Resolved an issue that was causing Lightning Rod to repeatedly strike targets, even if they are dead.Improved charged strikes to 6/8/10, up from 3/4/5Ooze ShurikenNow releases 4 shuriken, up from 2.Fixed a problem with a delay issue between the releases of Shuriken.Smoke BombWe have adjusted Smoke Bomb to improve the feeling of control when you teleport, improved its damage, and instead of a Dodge trigger, we have granted it a Dodge Chance buff. Ninja Vanish!Teleport distance reduced by 40%Damage increased to 50/60/70 from 30/50/70.Removed Dodge Effects trigger.Added a 15/25/35% chance to Dodge for 5 seconds upon using Smoke Bomb.Meteor StormMeteor is an undeniably powerful tool, and while we want it to remain that way, we're adjusting its damage and its rate of releasing meteors. Meteors will drop slowly enough to no longer overlap each other, and should feel a big weightier. We also fixed an issue with timing that caused one less meteor to drop each time you used the tool.Meteor's damage has been adjusted to 20/40/60 from 40/60/80.Meteor Storm now releases meteors less frequently, up to 1.0s from every 0.5s.Number of meteors adjusted to 6/8/10 from 9/12/15FireballWe've improved Fireball to release four fireballs, up from three, and its damage has been adjusted. In addition, it now impacts a larger area, making it both more consistent and more powerfull.Fireball now releases 4 projectiles at all ranks, up from 3.Fireball impact has been doubled.Damage of each fireball adjusted to 30/50/70 from 40/70/100 to reflect having an additional fireballl.Water SweepWater Sweep should now feel more consistent with a fixed range at all ranks. It now deals more damage, and stuns enemies instead of knocking them back. All of these changes make Water Sweep more powerful.Damage has been increased to 80/100/120 from 60/80/120.Radius set to 4m at all ranks. Now stuns for 1.0s instead of knocks back.UtromThe Utrom tree has a unique mechanic, the charge bar, that we felt was not quite living up to its potential. So, weve made major improvements to it! In addition, weve made lightning strike abilities more consistent and frequent across the board. We think youll be in for a shocking good time.Lighting StrikeLightning strike now deals more damage at early ranks.Damage increased to 20/25/30 from 10/20/30.Lightning DashWe want Dash builds to be slightly more viable, so we've increased the number of targets hit while also increasing its damage at lower ranks. Lightning Dash now also targets a larger area.Number of targets hit is now 3/4/5.Damage increased to 20/25/30.Targets a larger area.Quick StudyWe have adjusted Quick Study's charge rate, to account for the power changes we have provided to Utrom across the board.Charge rate adjusted to 50/100/150% from 75/125/200%ShockingWe have increased the base charge of the Utrom charge bar. Unlimited Power!Increased charge rate by 20%ElectrifyingWe have adjusted the scaling on Electrify to be more powerful at lower ranks.Damage adjusted to 10/15/20 from 7/15/22Chain LightningChain Lightning can now target a much larger area, making it more consistent and more powerful. We have adjusted the scaling to be slightly better at lower ranks.Radius set increased by 60%.Damage scaling set to 10/15/20 from 7/15/21Stormy WeatherWe have improved Stormy Weather's consistency by increasing its range and adjusting the scaling of damage.Radius increased by 20%Damage scaling set to 10/15/20 from 7/14/21.Techno-Organic InterfaceWe are lightly adjusting movement speed to be a bit more in control. Crafty turtles will still go fast!Movement speed granted is set to 15% at all ranks.Biomechanical SpeedWe wanted to grant a higher window of opportunity to use the benefit of Biomechanical SpeedDuration increased to 3/4/5sAftershockWe are also making Aftershock more consistent with a higher range.Radius increased by 60%OozeOur goopiest power tree is also one of our most powerful. We have left it largely unchanged. Slime on!Shelf LifeWe want Shelf Life to feel like it leaves a lasting impression when you choose it, so we're increasing how long the bonuses last.Improved number of rooms Shelf Life is active to 4/5/6FlameFlame tree is in a really good place, but we wanted to see if we could make an Inferno build a bit more viable.Flame StrikeFlame Strike will deal slightly more damage.Damage increased to 25/35/45 from 20/30/40.InfernoWe want to make Inferno more threatening, so we are making it deal more damage by letting it deal damage more frequently.Inferno deals its damage more frequently, up from every 0.5s to every 0.3sBlazing InfernoAn increase to Blazing Inferno's duration along with the improvement to Inferno will make this fire DoT more threatening.Blazing Inferno now increases the duration of Inferno to 3/4/5 seconds from 2/3/4 seconds.WaterIn a previous update, we added an entirely new build alternative with Still Waters (and friends). We still think Water can have more potential to create new builds, so were improving many of the powers across the board. Dive into these changes!Torrential StrikeWe are pushing up Multi-Strike in a few ways, including how much is provided by Torrential Strike.Torrential Strike now increases Multi-Hit chance by 8/10/12% up from 5/7/10%.Water DashWater Dash will feel more consistent with a higher range, and we have also increased its damage. Let's go, Dash builds!Water Dash range increased by 60% at all ranks.Damage has been increased to 45/60/75 from 35/45/60.Water AbilitiesWater Abilities could be a little more powerful, so we're improving its damage.Water Abilities now deals 55/70/85 damage, from 45/60/75.Splash DamageCleave damage builds can be really fun, so we want Splash Damage to feel more viable.Damage to nearby enemies increased to 40/55/70% of water damage, from 30/45/60%.When it RainsWe have improved the damage provided by When It Rains, which will further be improved by other changes to Multi-Hit.Damage increased to 30/45/60, from 24/38/52FrostFrost should feel more like you are overwhelming your enemies with relentless cold. We have significantly increased its slow, and now the slow also lasts longer.Frost now slows enemies further by 50/60/70 from 20/35/50.Duration increased to 2.5s.NinjaNinja is one of our better performing power trees, so it remains mostly unchanged.Extended AssaultExtended Assault felt too powerful with no investment in the Ninja power tree. We've added three requirements before it will be unlocked. (Any Shuriken ability/tool, Either Ricochet or Chakram, Either Quick Feet or First Strike to unlock it.)First StrikeWe wanted to make First Strike part of more Ninja builds. There are now no requirements to unlock First Strike, and First Strike will help with unlocking numerous Ninja Powers.Art of DarknessWe're making Art of Darkness provide a little bit more elemental power.Damage scaling increased to 15/20/25 from 10/15/20.Astral LightIn a future patch, were thrilled to say that were going to be providing massive overhauls to the Astral Light power tree. Until then, were making a number of changes to improve this power tree to hold you over; theres light at the end of THIS tunnel.DaybreakWe have improved Daybreak's scaling Damage Reduction on Blinding Light, to be a more powerful defensive tool if you invest in it.Damage reduction per rank now set to 4/6/8%, changed from flat 5% per rank.Shimmering ShieldWe want Light Shell to feel more consistent and provide more defense, so we're improving the duration of Light Shell granted by Shimmering Shield.Light shell duration increased to 1.5/2.5/3.5s from 1.2/1.8/2.3sRadiant WarriorSame as Shimmering Shield above, we want Light Shell to feel more consistent and provide more defense, so we're improving the duration of Light Shell granted by Radiant Warrior as well.Light shell duration increased to 1.5/2.5/3.5s from 1.2/1.8/2.3sAncestral GuardianWe've changed Ancestral Guardian to instead provide a significant boost to Elemental Damage. We hope the changes provided to Light Shell's duration elsewhere make this a consistent power for using in elemental builds.Removed Light Shell at the start of combat. Now grants 20/30/40% increased Elemental damage while Light Shell is active, instead of providing Light Shell for a duration at the start of a room.IlluminationIllumination could use a little more shine, so we've increased the Light Damage from reflected projectiles.Damage increased to 45/60/75% of your Max Health, from 30/45/60%.Revved UpWe've improved Revved Up's dodge chance provided on targets affected by Blinding Light. Combined with the changes to Daybreak, this will make Blinding Light a powerful defensive option.Dodge chance increased to 20/25/30%, from 10/15/20%Astral DarkGift of the DragonWe wanted to give this power a bit more value. • Mini Review: Rendering Ranger: R2 [Rewind] (Switch) - A Novel Run 'N' Gun/Shooter Hybrid That's Finally Affordable
    www.nintendolife.com
Rendering Ranger R2's original release is a layered story of mystique and intrigue. Developed by Manfred Trenz of Turrican fame, it was only ever released in Japan after its American and European incarnation, Targa, was cancelled. With only 10,000 copies produced, its one of the rarest Super Famicom games and by far the most valuable. An unusual run-and-gun/shoot-em-up hybrid, its graphics were switched in beta from traditional spritework to a pre-rendered flavour in an attempt to capitalise on the Donkey Kong Country wave. Its platform stages play much like Contra, dropping Turricans sprawling layouts for more linear fare, while its shoot-'em-up sections play similarly to Thunder Force. Action-packed throughout, there are plenty of weapons to swap between, and you can power up your shot types through several levels. Should you take too much damage, your weapon power takes a hit in turn. You have three bombs available that function differently depending on the weapon youre using, and interestingly they operate on a reheat basis, meaning the game allows you to be quite liberal in their usage. In platform mode, the 'L' and 'R' buttons let you shoot diagonally up or down from a fixed position, and youre graced with a gravity-defying jump. Graphically, its all very nice, showboating with giant Mode 7 sprite swoops and spinny spaceship takeoffs. One wonders what the original sprite work might have looked like, although hints remain in stage sixs rather splendid mothership assault and various backgrounds. The game switches regularly between platform action and shoot-'em-up blasting, your weapon switching and power-upping working well in either format. The shoot-'em-up stages are exciting and well composed, although visually confusing at times. The real issue with Rendering Ranger R2 is that it suffers from a little of that old Amiga irritation. Hit boxes and movements are a tad loose, knockbacks and recovery just shy of sufficient, and certain enemy placements and obstacles can grind ones gears. The stages are inordinately long in places, occasionally in danger of overstaying their welcome, and it takes approximately two hours to put the whole thing to bed. It defaults to Hard, too, so watch out, as it can be tricky even on Normal. With this [Rewind] edition, Limited Run has kindly included the unreleased Targa localisation, which is just a bearded sprite swap, as well as options for screen adjustments, rewind features, and CRT filters. For some inexplicable reason they didnt include a continue option, instead requiring you to excruciatingly type in passwords to return to previous levels; and, the limited rewind function continues recording while the game is paused, which is really boneheaded, and completely defeats the purpose of the feature if youre unlucky with your timing.Theres plenty to like in Rendering Ranger R2, and if you learn it thoroughly it's twice as rewarding. Turrican fans will love it, and the shoot-'em-up stages look great, even if theyre a tad Euroshmuppy in places. The hybrid is a novel idea, and the weapons system and perpetual bomb recharges bring variety to the table. Its not as good as Contra nor Thunder Force, but its certainly an enjoyable action game in its own right, despite the odd niggling annoyance. And you can now own it for less than a thousand quid, which is nice.

  • Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (29th March)
    www.nintendolife.com
Nearly 30 late arrivalsOllie Reynolds, Staff WriterI'm still working my way through Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, though my progress has admittedly slowed to a crawl. There's just so much I want to play at the moment, and given just how monumentally large Xenoblade X is, I'm not sure I'm in the right state of mind to devote so much time to it.Elsewhere, I'm playing through I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream from Nightdive. It's pretty delightful so far, and I reckon you'll be seeing a little review of it pretty soon.Kate Gray, ContributorThis weekend, I'll be playing everybody's favourite game: assembling three separate IKEA cabinets!!!! And Monster Hunter Wilds. I'm not sure which one is more fiddly.I also just started Atomfall, which came out this week and is on Game Pass, and you know what? It's actually really, really good. Reminiscent of Skyrims and Fallouts of old, that absolutely solid B-game vibe where the jank is utterly charming (I had a bug where throwing a Molotov cocktail crashed the game three times in a row and it was hilarious). The range of British and Irish accents on display is impressive, too, and I've never seen so many lovingly detailed dry stone walls in a game! Also, drinking tea and eating Cornish Pasties restores your health! Big recommend so far for me.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kGonalo Lopes, ContributorWith over 90% of Primordia and 50% of Noctilum secured and properly data probed with extremely efficient and profitable Miranium mining quotas, this weekend will be spend mostly amassing said minerals and vast sums of cash that will one day service my personal squad of doll/skells (which for now are but a distant dream). I will do some odd missions as I stumble upon then in New L.A. and might actually set Chapter 5 in motion and begin charting Oblivia is that an Arraken sandworm!? IP copyright lawyers from Monolith Soft say No!, but we know better... *wink, wink*.If you managed to make any sense of any of that above, game of the week is (and most certainly will continue to be) Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. I didnt even get to the new content stuff yet and Im already dreaming up all sort of class efficient squad combinations.Jim Norman, Staff WriterI didnt pick up Xenoblade Chronicles X last week, but hearing my pals chat about how wonderful it is for the past seven days has really got me itching to dive in. Maybe Ill finally break and pick up a copy if I find the time.Annoyingly, Star Wars Outlaws, another huge open-world game all about exploring and taking your time, has finally sunk its claws into me. I doubt Ill be able to play both properly, but Id like to spend a liiitle more time in a galaxy far, far away before I head to Mira.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kOliver Revolta, ContributorI thought I was too old for the first Mario + Rabbids game, but loved it. Years later Im now playing through Sparks of Hope with a more intense version of the same hesitation (of course, because Im even older). Im hesitant about the changes the sequel seems to have lost some of the magic of the original and it was way too easy for the first 10 or so hours, but the more I get through it, the more its growing on me. Some of the music is also kind of wonderful. Nearing the end now, Im starting to really enjoy it.Roland Ingram, ContributorThis weekend Im mixing dystopian future and idyllic past as I play Death Stranding on Xbox and Atari 50 on Switch. In the evenings, Ill be straight-facedly lugging improbably large backpacks of supplies across beautiful crags; in the daytime, educating the kids and prying them from their Kirby addiction. I expected Atari 50 to be full of back in my day moments, but we havent even reached my day yet theyre obsessed with Pong. If you ever doubted Nintendos philosophy that power isnt everything, just watch children fall in love with two lines and a dot.Gavin Lane, EditorI'm about 8 hours into XCX and it's just starting to click. I've got to say that the intro chapters and the general way the game lays out its myriad systems are terrible - if it weren't for years of wanting to play it and now having paid full price for the game twice, I may well have chucked in the towel by now. I was getting 'Perfect' timed button presses for several hours before I understood what they actually did, the whole combat system and zoning and Arts icons and cooldown meters which I'm sure are second nature to Xenoblade vets made for a miserable time early on.BUT! It's starting to fall into place, the characters are working their charms, and the rhythm of the world makes more sense now. I didn't think there could be a better game with a worse opening than Pikmin 4, but I've got my fingers crossed for this one.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWatch on YouTube That's what we have planned for the weekend, but what about you? • Digital Foundry Analyses The Tech In Xenoblade Chronicles X For Switch
    www.nintendolife.com
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kFollowing the recent release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on the Switch, tech experts Digital Foundry have now provided an analysis of how the new version improves upon the original. In a video that narrator John Linneman calls the "end of an era" for Wii U > Switch conversions, he describes Xenoblade Chronicles X as a "moderately straightforward affair" on the surface, noting that the game on Switch is more or less in line with the original. However, with the resolution, the Wii U version maxes out at 720p, whereas the Switch utilises dynamic resolution that reaches native 1080p. Meanwhile, features such as motion blurring, distant detail, and shadow effects are all at least on par with the original game, if not improved. Linneman notes that the New Los Angeles locations display significantly more detail on the Switch when compared to Wii U.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWatch on YouTube Elsewhere, changes to character models are highlighted, with Linneman stating that the old Wii U characters were "off-putting" thanks to their facial features. With the Switch port, you may have already noticed significant improvements here, with changes to eye shape, facial structure, and even hairstyles. Finally, the last major improvement comes with the UI, which is much easier to understand with the new Switch port. It's not all good news, however. It's noted that there's still a lot of pop-in while exploring, particularly in the city, and texture filtering is still "poor". Cutscenes also boost black levels in the new port, making scenes appear slightly washed out when compared to the original. Hardly a dealbreaker, mind.Looking at the frame rate, both games perform at 30fps with a few minor dips here and there. As we've highlighted previously, there is a hidden 60fps mode hidden in game files, which might hint towards boosted performance on the upcoming Switch 2.Overall then, this is a pretty huge success for developer Monolith Soft. The improvements here could be compared to that of Metroid Prime Remastered, with character models receiving massive improvements and environments delivering more detail. If you didn't play Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U, then you have to give it a punt on the Switch. Definitively DefinitiveRobot JoxHave you been playing Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Switch? • Huh, The Pokmon Company's Statement On TCG Shortages Sure Looks Familiar
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeAfter a series of pretty disastrous launches for Trading Card Game expansions, The Pokmon Company has today issued a statement outlining its approach to releasing sets moving forward. The problem is, we've heard it all before. Like, almost word for word (thanks, Kotaku). The upcoming Destined Rivals expansion has been the latest set in the firing line, after a woeful launch left hopeful buyers sitting in queues for hours while scalpers listed their pre-orders online with beefed-up prices. TPC broke its silence on this release a few days back, stating it "will continue to explore measures that help create the best possible experience for Pokmon Center customers," and now it has released another statement on the official Pokmon website (shared to BlueSky by Serebii's Joe Merrick), acknowledging the difficult launches.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWatch on YouTube "We are actively working to print more of the impacted Pokmon TCG products as quickly as possible and at maximum capacity," the statement reads, confirming that "reprinted products are expected to be available at participating retailers as soon as possible".The Pokmon Company International have put out a statement about the Pokmon TCG situation Joe Merrick (@joemerrick.bsky.social) 2025-03-27T15:34:15.063ZIt would all sound pretty promising if it wasn't a near-exact replica of what TPC said back in January when it faced stock issues with its Prismatic Evolutions launch. In a statement released to Kotaku two months ago, TPC said it was "actively working to print more of the impacted Pokmon TCG products as quickly as possible," claiming that "reprinted products are expected to be available at participating retailers as soon as possible to help ensure more fans receive opportunities to access Scarlet & VioletPrismatic Evolutions". Does that ring any bells? There's even more crossover between the two statements besides, with both opening to a near-identical introduction and each containing the line, "We understand this inconvenience can be disappointing for fans". Yeah, tell us about it.Now, we know that not every statement can be unique, and it's promising to know that TPC's stance on the issue hasn't changed, but the copy-and-paste job here feels a little sly particularly when the issue still clearly persists. Here's hoping that The Pokmon Company follows through on its promise this time and that we actually see some stock increases to combat the booming demand. If not, expect to see this statement wheeled out again in a couple of months. What's the ETA on those ETBs?Gentlemen, please...Pokntial earningsWhat do you make of this 'new' statement from TPC? • Talking Point: Which Switch Game Needs A 'Nintendo Switch 2 Edition' The Most?
    www.nintendolife.com
As opposed to "Switch 2 exclusive"Jim Norman, Staff WriterImage: Nintendo LifeSwitch 2 Edition we need: Pokmon Scarlet & VioletSwitch 2 Edition I want: Super Mario OdysseyI'll get the low-hanging fruit out the way to start. Pokmon Scarlet and Violet is the Switch game that is most in need of a 'Switch 2 Edition'. I was so very excited for Gen IX, but ended up skipping it upon the realisation of what it actually was. According to everyone who has played it, there's a very fun game under there, and a bit of Switch 2 polish would have me coughing up full retail price instantly. In terms of the Switch 2 Edition I want, let's go crazy and say Mario Odyssey. It's never going to happen (particularly if a new 3D Mario is in the launch lineup like we're all expecting), but I'd really love to go back to this one with boosted performance and a couple of extras thrown in for good measure we never got any meaningful DLC and that still brings a tear to my eye.Ollie Reynolds, Staff WriterImage: Nintendo LifeSwitch 2 Edition we need: Bayonetta 3Switch 2 Edition I want: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildMy issues with Bayonetta 3 extend beyond its technical limitations, but I'm confident that I would happily give it another shot if Nintendo and PlatinumGames gave it a much-needed performance boost on Switch 2. In terms of frame rate, it already runs quite well, but it looks absolutely terrible in places as a result, especially in handheld mode. Characters look blurry, and there's a horrible dithering effect applied during heated battles. Get it enhanced on Switch 2, though, and I might be tempted back. There are other games that almost certainly need a bit of TLC, but I couldn't say no to an enhanced Breath of the Wild. Nintendo's pretty ambitious when it comes to its flagship franchises, and I reckon it would go well beyond a simple boost in frame rate for what is one of the finest games of all time. Imagine exiting that introductory cave again to a completely revamped lighting system, improved weather effects, even more blades of grass... It could look absolutely stunning, worthy of a relaunch. Give it to me.Gavin Lane, EditorImage: Nintendo LifeSwitch 2 Edition we need: Super Mario Maker 2Switch 2 Edition I want: Smash Bros. UltimateBeyond a new Wonder game style to slot in next to the 3D World option, it's hard to see how Nintendo could justify a Mario Maker 3. However, a new version a 'Deluxe' upgrade in all but name which adds that theme plus 'Mouse Mode' input that brings back the control precision and convenience of the Wii U original? I could get into it. The sequel added so much, but from a control POV, it always felt worse to me. This could be its shot at redemption. And I'd like to give Smash another shot. Cards on the table: it's never clicked for me. When Banjo arrived, I bought the game and the DLC, but I never got too far with it, and then I got distracted by something else. It seems Masahiro Sakurai has taken the series to its logical conclusion with Ultimate, so short of a total reimagining of what a platform fighter can be (which, actually, sounds interesting to someone who bounced off Ultimate), an updated edition of the old game with a wave of new fighters would be a great excuse to get up, brush myself down, and try again. There are our picks, but what do you think? • 'My Nintendo' App Icon Spotted, But Will It Come To The West?
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeUpdate [Fri 28th Mar 2025, 11:10am]: Well folks, we're blushing quite profusely now. As pointed out, the My Nintendo app is indeed real, albeit only available in Japan at the time of writing. We sincerely apologise if we caused any confusion here! The app's icon being present in the screenshots from Nintendo Today does still raise a few questions, however. Is it possible Nintendo might bring it over to the West, or is it, as covered below, merely a placeholder to facilitate a fancy screenshot?Anyway, it's business as usual for the time being - we're juggling quite a few balls at the moment, so again, we apologise for the slip up!Original Story: Nintendo dropped a load of new surprises as part of its latest Direct presentation, including a brand-new mobile app called 'Nintendo Today!'.In it, the app describes how to set up one of its two widgets on your phone homescreen, and it's here that we can see something quite interesting. In the accompanying screenshots, an app icon for 'My Nintendo' can be seen in the bottom left corner of the screen. Now, it's possible that this could just be something that Nintendo cooked up for the sole purpose of creating a realistic looking phone screen, utilising a 'fake' icon to go alongside the real icons for Nintendo Today, Nintendo Switch Online, and Nintendo Music. If it's not fake, though, then we could be looking at yet another app from Nintendo in the near future; one that allows you to access My Nintendo directly through your phone.Image: NintendoHopefully Nintendo will be able to shed some light on this particular mystery soon; perhaps during its upcoming Switch 2 Direct..? Nah, just focus on the new console please, Nintendo. Bite-sized Directs!Nearly 30 late arrivalsDo you think this is real, or is it something Nintendo just put together for the sake of a good image? • Has Metroid Prime 4 Taken Inspiration From Dread For Its New Suit?
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: NintendoAt the end of the latest trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, we were bestowed with a brief but tantalising glimpse at a brand-new suit for long-time protagonist Samus Aran.At first glance, the suit looks completely new; something we've not yet seen from the Metroid Series. Or is it..? Well, officially yes, it is, but taking a quick look through some of the concept art for Metroid Dread, we've spotted a few similarities with one of the scrapped suit designs from MercurySteam's 2021 entry.Observe in the below image: you can see distinct similarities with the helmet, the rounded shape of the shoulder pads (albeit not the size), and the three lights in the centre of Samus' chest. The helmet design specifically is a particularly interesting one, as the additional 'eye' above the main visor seems to be the source of Samus' new psychic abilities in Beyond. In other words, it's not just some random cosmetic choice that Retro Studios decided to throw in for fun.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWatch on YouTube If we disregard the fact that the Dread concept art wasn't used in the final game, could it be that the similarities point to some loose connection between Dread and Beyond? Could the latter actually be taking place much later in the timeline than we had previously thought?Chances are it's merely a coincidence. In fact, we're almost certain it's a coincidence, but it definitely raises a few questions and makes us even more excited to find out what happens when Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launches later this year.Image: Nintendo LifeMetroid Prime 4: Beyond was showcased in the latest Direct presentation, which also detailed the new Virtual Game Card scheme for Switch and Switch 2. We'll be finding out much more about the Switch 2 next week during the big Direct showcase on 2nd April. Ahhhh we want itMaybe we'll get one next week..?What do you think, dear readers? Do the similarities here point to some connection between Prime 4 and Dread, or is this merely a happy coincidence? • Ubisoft Opens New Subsidiary Backed By Tencent For Assassin's Creed And Other IP
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Zion, Grassl / Nintendo LifeNintendo has shared all sorts of new and exciting reveals for the Switch this week, but it's not the only company that's been busy. Third-party developer and publisher Ubisoft has announced it will be "accelerating its transformation" with a new dedicated subsidiary for Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series, and it's backed by Tencent. The Chinese video game company will be investing 1.16 billion (approximately 25%) for a "minority stake in the new subsidiary" valued at around 4 billion. The focus will apparently be to build and create gaming ecosystems that are "truly evergreen and multiplatform".Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWatch on YouTube With this investment, the team will supposedly be able to "drive further increases in quality of narrative solo experiences, expand multiplayer offerings with increased frequency of content release, introduce free-to-play touch points, and integrate more social features".The binding agreement with Tencent follows the formal and competitive process in exploring and assessing different strategic options announced earlier this year. Based on the careful consideration of several expressions of interest received from diverse parties, and its duty to act in the best interests of all Ubisoft stakeholders, the Board of Directors, upon recommendation from the ad hoc Committee, determined that this transaction crystalized the best value for Ubisofts assets and unanimously approved the proposed transaction on March 27, 2025.Outside of this, Ubisoft notes how it will continue to "focus on nurturing the development of iconic franchises" listing Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon and The Division as a few examples. Ubisoft's co-founder and chief executive officer Yves Guillemot called it a "foundational step in changing Ubisoft's operating model" making it both "agile and ambitious" going forward.Today Ubisoft is opening a new chapter in its history. As we accelerate the companys transformation, this is a foundational step in changing Ubisofts operating model that will enable us to be both agile and ambitious. We are focused on building strong game ecosystems designed to become evergreen, growing high-performing brands and creating new IPs powered by cutting-edge and emerging technologies. With the creation of a dedicated subsidiary that will spearhead development for three of our largest franchises and the onboarding of Tencent as a minority investor, we are crystalizing the value of our assets, strengthening our balance sheet, and creating the best conditions for these franchises long-term growth and success. With its dedicated and autonomous leadership team, it will focus on transforming these three brands into unique ecosystems. We are committed to building a sharper, more focused organization-one where talented teams will take our brands to the next level, accelerate the growth of emerging franchises, and lead innovation in next-generation technologies and services, all with the goal of delivering enriching, memorable games that exceed players' expectations, and create superior value for our shareholders and other stakeholdersAccording to recent rumours, Ubisoft has multiple titles lined up for the Switch 2. And last week it launched its new game Assassin's Creed Shadows. Update: Ubisoft says it's in "love" with the Switch 2"Finally, I can play the new Assassin's Creed"Pain in the MechWhat do you make of this latest development? • Switch 2's Pre-Order Date Might Have Been Accidentally Leaked By Best Buy
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: NintendoAs we get closer to the Switch 2 Direct, it seems more retailers are preparing for the arrival of the new Nintendo system. As highlighted by IGN, Best Buy Canada recently published a "comprehensive guide on how to pre-order the Switch 2", but this blog post has now been taken offline. What's most interesting about this is the date attached - suggesting Switch 2 pre-orders will open on 2nd April 2025 in Canada."Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will open on April 2nd at Best Buy Canada."If this is accurate, it means pre-orders will go live in this region on the same date as the Switch 2 Direct. Best Buy in the US hasn't said anything about this just yet, so we'll just have to wait and see. Nintendo will also be hosting its 'Switch 2 experience' globally. This begins in New York in early April and locations like Toronto will host this event later on in the same month.Apart from the official pre-order date confirmation, we're still waiting for a price and release date for the new hardware. As opposed to "Switch 2 exclusive".Today, Nintendo introduced Virtual Game Cards, a digital game-sharing feature coming to Switches 1 and 2 that lets you move your digital purchases between your consoles and lend them to people in your family Nintendo Account group.A note on Nintendo's webpage detailing the upcoming feature mentions that "Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games" can only be moved between Switch 2 systems, naturally, but it also mentions something else: "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games".Read the full article on nintendolife.com
