  • One streaming app to (almost) rule them all
    www.theverge.com
Hi, friends! Welcome to Installer No. 78, your guide to the best and Verge-iest stuff in the world. (If youre new here, welcome, sorry everythings about to get so expensive, and also you can read all the old editions at the Installer homepage.)This week, Ive been reading about baseball bats and work-life balance and BYD and Scarlett Johansson, watching Paradise, rekindling my love of pear-flavored jelly beans, sharing Robin Sloans AI take with anyone who will listen, grooving to the greatest unexpected Doechii remix of all time, and finally finding the monitor mount that makes my webcam upgrade work.I also have for you a couple of great new apps for streaming and gaming, a look back into Microsofts history, the latest on the Switch 2, a screed against screen time, and much more.Oh, and a programming note: Installer is off next week. Taking a little break before we ramp up for Developer Conference season. But we have lots to do today! Lets get into it.(As always, the best part of Installer is your ideas and tips. What are you into right now? What should everyone else be reading / listening to / watching / downloading / sipping on this week? Tell me everything: installer@theverge.com. And if you know someone else who might enjoy Installer, tell them to subscribe here.)The DropPlex. Plex has spent a lot of time and energy trying to become a proper, legit streaming platform, and the new mobile app is by far the most mainstream-useful thing it has ever made. Mixing streaming media with my library, and lots of discovery tools, feels really nice. Fair warning, though: youll need a $4.99 monthly sub to get a lot of Plexs best features.Delta 1.7. The iPhones best game emulator, now with online multiplayer! (At least for DS games.) It also has nice screenshot support and some new N64-specific updates, which gives me great hope for the Mario Golf ROM Ive already put too many hours into.Skylight. It looks exactly like TikTok, but it runs on the same AT Protocol that powers Bluesky. That is a very enticing combination and its a really nice app for something so brand new. Bluesky is really starting to look like the fediverse.Celebrate 50 years of Microsoft with the companys original source code. This week was the 50th anniversary of Microsoft, and Bill Gates marked the occasion by releasing all its original Altair BASIC source code via one of the cooler retro-style websites youll ever use.The Nintendo Switch 2. I know, weve talked about this before, and I know, its not launching until June. But the new Switch a console I am outrageously, maybe unprecedentedly, excited about, especially now that weve learned more about its specs and its game lineup is officially launching in June, and I just needed you to know so you dont miss it. I will be there. You cant preorder it yet, because of chaos, but Ill keep you posted.I hate my phone so I got rid of it. Been a while since a 46-minute YouTube rant had me nodding this hard but Eddy Burback does a great job of explaining both why our phones are a problem, and why life without a phone feels increasingly impossible. Using a landline? Can you imagine?A Minecraft Movie. The reviews are meh, because of course they are. But Ill watch Jack Black in anything, and Im genuinely curious to see both what the blocky movie world looks like and how this very clearly Lego Movie-inspired flick pulls off the whole just keep building bit.DEVONthink 4.0. DEVONthink is, like, the ultimate Mac app for just storing all your junk. The designs a little 90s for my taste, but the new beta has some nice updates and a huge set of AI tools for finding, summarizing, and organizing content. Im tempted to throw my whole life back in the app.Koira. Another delightful entrant (for Steam and PS5) in one of my favorite game genres the quiet, simple puzzler that never tries to do too much but somehow seems to keep your attention forever. Plus, you get a puppy friend!Weve talked about the app Sofa a few times here in Installer. Its a really good-looking, powerful app for Apple devices that lets you manage all the stuff you want to watch, read, listen to, and everything else. Ive come to appreciate having it as the app I go to when I deliberately want to relax. Rather than just aimlessly scroll on Reddit or whatever, Sofa is just a giant list of stuff I actually want to consume.Sofas big new feature this week is a podcast player, which is full-featured enough that you can use Sofa as your one and only podcast app. Like everything else in Sofa, its really nicely made and is already as good at queue management as any app Ive tried. On the occasion of the new update, I asked Shawn Hickman, Sofas developer, to share his homescreen with us. I figured he might have some widget ideas, you know? Here it is, plus some info on the apps he uses and why:The phone: iPhone 16 Pro Max. I love the big phones and have embraced the PopSocket life. The wallpaper: My homescreen rotates images from my photo library (one of my favorite iOS features), and I use the blurred version of it as my wallpaper. The apps: Camera, Phone, Apple Maps, Clock, Wallet, Settings, Photos, Reminders, App Store, Music, Safari, 1Password, YouTube, Bear, YouTube Studio, Lightroom, Things, Blackmagic Camera, Reeder, Discord, RevenueCat, ChatGPT, Apple Sports, Mail, Messages, Sofa, Apple Notes.I keep very few apps on my homescreen and tend to rely on search more. Also, Im not a big widgets person. I have a few on my first page (Photos, Weather, and Calendar), but I prefer scanning app icons rather than widgets .Things, Bear, and Reeder are a few of my favorite apps of all time. Ive used Reeder (now Reeder Classic) for a long time and have always been impressed with the apps craftsmanship. The new Reeder is even better. I actually like the news feed approach more than the traditional RSS feed / inbox approach. I find it to be a low-stress way to keep up with different news sources.Bear is where I write and store a lot of my work notes. I love writing in markdown, the flexibility of the apps tagging system, and its visual design. Things is my favorite app ever. Ive been using it for so long and couldnt imagine managing my work without it. Simply the best.I have a YouTube channel. Ive been experimenting with shooting Apple Log, and the Blackmagic Camera app is by far the most flexible. You need to do a bit of learning, but its pretty sweet once youve gotten a handle on it. I love photography, and really love editing photos, so I tend to spend a lot of time in Lightroom. I find it relaxing, and tend to edit photos when Im stuck on a problem. It weirdly helps me think.RevenueCat is a great service that makes implementing and managing Sofas app subscriptions much easier.I also asked Shawn to share a few things hes into right now. Heres what he sent:Severance. Its probably my favorite TV show since the first season of Stranger Things and I really want to buy one of the keyboards the MDR team uses! Now we must all endure the long wait for season 3.Ive been on a history kick, and there are a few documentaries Ive really liked: The War.Framelines: Im a photography enthusiast, and one of my favorite YouTube channels, and now magazines, is Framelines. They focus a lot on street photography but expand beyond that quite a bit. Their channel is great, and I love getting their physical magazines, too.CrowdsourcedHeres what the Installer community is into this week. I want to know what youre into right now as well! Email installer@theverge.com or message me on Signal @davidpierce.11 with your recommendations for anything and everything, and well feature some of our favorites here every week. For even more great recommendations, check out the replies to this post on Threads and this post on Bluesky.I played Dungeon Pages for the first time on my iPad last night and REALLY enjoyed it! Would be even more enjoyable on paper to get away from doomscrolling for a while. DylanI initially had my heart set on the Fujifilm X100VI, but a friend suggested the X-T50. Its been a great learning experience, and Im pleased with the photos Ive taken. Im still discovering all the nuances of the Fujifilm ecosystem. PaulIf youre liking your SodaStream, you should check out Simpli Soda theyre a family business out of SE Wisconsin that does mail-in cylinder swaps for all brands (including quick-connects like your SodaStream Art uses) for less $$. CoriLate to the party, but Baldurs Gate 3. I was blown away by how quickly I got immersed, and Im only on my first playthrough. I didnt realize that it ran natively on macOS until last month. DrakeWanted to recommend a great app I have been happily using (+ paying for) for five years that no one else seems to talk about: Mealime. Its the perfect app if, like me, you struggle not only at planning recipes for the week but also the act of shopping itself. Normally, when I make a grocery list, I crisscross the grocery store looking for what I need. Mealime gives you tons of recipes, lets you filter by dietary preferences, make a meal plan, and then it makes a grocery list grouped by section of the grocery store. Its a total game-changer for me. DrewI absolutely love Li Hing pineapple rings. Im told theyre common in Hawaii, but on the East Coast, theyre new to me. Sour and delicious. I order mine from Wholesale Unlimited Hawaii, and theyre fun and delicious and unique. The store has tons of snacks Ive never seen around where I live, and everything Ive bought is really good. SteveI finished watching Reacher season 3 on Prime Video. I liked the season as an action flick, but it doesnt feel like a Reacher-level story. The investigation element was missing from this season. Season 1 was the strongest offering in this series. AnkurI just found out about the Johnny.Decimal system last night. Diving in to reorganizing my work files as I descend further down the PKM rabbit hole. DirkOtherwise Objectionable is an excellent history of Section 230. Hosted by Mike Masnick and featuring recollections from the folks who were there at the inception of the 26 words that created the Internet. Section 230 is under threat (yet again), so its a good time to learn why its so important we dont screw it up with badly written and misguided legislation. ZipSigning offIf you were extremely online during a very specific time period, the names Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld might mean a lot to you. They were two of my first favorite online comedians, part of a brilliant CollegeHumor gang that was way ahead of its time making funny stuff on the internet. If youve never watched a Jake and Amir, head to their YouTube channel, sort by oldest, and give it a whirl. But if you can quote as many of their bits as I can, you really should check out the Greatest Jake and Amir Episode Ever tournament the two guys are doing on the channel, rewatching and commenting on some of their best work. (If youre on their Patreon, you can already see who won the tournament, but as I write this, the YouTube channel is only up to the Final Four.) I was shocked at how many of these videos I can still recite, pretty much word for word, all these years later. No keeding.See you in two weeks!See More:

  • Jaguar Land Rover pauses US shipments over Trump tariffs
    www.theverge.com
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) says its delaying shipments to the US this month while it works out how it will deal with the wide-ranging tariffs President Donald Trump announced this week, according to The Guardian. As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions, including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans, JLR told The Guardian. The automaker is responding to a 25 percent Trump-ordered tariff on imported vehicles that went into effect Thursday and could add $5,000 to $10,000 or more to the price of a new car in the US. JLR said this week that its business remains resilient, but those living in the town where its cars are made werent optimistic, with one telling The Guardian that the tariffs could lead to job losses. About a quarter of the 400,000 vehicles JLR sells every year go to US buyers, as The Sunday Times notes in its own story about the pause this morning. Its thought that the automaker has enough existing US stock to last about two months, and it would take about 21 days for more to come once shipments resume, the Times writes. JLR isnt alone in its concerns. Earlier this week, Nintendo blamed Trumps new tariffs as it delayed US preorders of the Switch 2, originally scheduled to start on April 9th. In the wake of the tariffs announcement, the US Stock market lost $6.6 trillion in two days a record, according to The Wall Street Journal and industries are bracing for negative impacts to the cost and availability of just about everything, including the high-powered GPUs used by AI companies, gadgets of all types, and even board games

  • Meta AI gets two new models as Meta releases Llama 4
    www.theverge.com
Meta has announced the release of Llama 4, its newest collection of AI models that now power Meta AI on the web and in WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram Direct. The two models, also available to download from Meta or Hugging Face now, are Llama 4 Scout, a small model capable of fitting in a single Nvidia H100 GPU, and Llama 4 Maverick, which is more akin to GPT-4o and Gemini 2.0 Flash. And the company says its in the process of training Llama 4 Behemoth, which Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says on Instagram is already the highest performing base model in the world.According to Meta, Scout has a 10-million-token context window the working memory of an AI model and beats Googles Gemma 3 and Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite models, as well as the open-source Mistral 3.1, across a broad range of widely reported benchmarks, while still fitting in a single Nvidia H100 GPU. It makes similar claims about its larger Maverick models performance versus OpenAIs GPT-4o and Googles Gemini 2.0 Flash, and says its results are comparable to DeepSeek-V3 in coding and reasoning tasks using less than half the active parameters, or the variables that guide AI models behavior.Meanwhile, Llama 4 Behemoth has 288 billion active parameters with 2 trillion parameters in total. The company again says Behemoth can outperform its competitors, in this case GPT-4.5 and Claude Sonnet 3.7, on several STEM benchmarks. For Llama 4, Meta says it switched to a mixture of experts (MoE) architecture, an approach that conserves resources by using only the parts of a model that are needed for a given task. The company plans to discuss future plans for AI models and products at LlamaCon, which is taking place on April 29th.As with its past models, Meta calls the Llama 4 collection open-source, although it has been criticized for its licenses less-than-open requirements. For instance, the Llama 4 license requires commercial entities with more than 700 million monthly active users to request a license from Meta before using its models, which the Open Source Initiative wrote in 2023 takes it out of the category of Open Source.

  • Tron: Ares blends the real world with the digital in its first trailer
    www.theverge.com
Get ready for slick light strips and futuristic lightcycles.Disney just released the first trailer for Tron: Ares, the long-planned Tron: Legacy sequel. The minute-and-a-half trailer doesnt say much about the story but shows plenty of the movies visuals, which look dark, moody, and filled with the series signature light trails. The trailer opens in the physical world at night, as Jared Letos Ares, a Program made physical, flees from police on a light cycle, slicing one in half using his light trail as a weapon. The shots that follow show a massive airship hovering over the real-world city, visible only by the red light strips on its outside. The rest has people looking on in horror at the airship, dogfights between human aircraft and fighters from the Tron digital world, and what looks like a clip of Ares being given his physical body. All of that is set to the music of Nine Inch Nails, which is handling the soundtrack this time around. It ends with a voiceover from Jeff Bridges, reprising his role as Kevin Flynn and saying, Ready? Theres no going back. The movie hits theaters on October 10th.Disney included the poster above in an email to The Verge announcing the trailers release. In a YouTube video from Thursdays CinemaCon presentation about Ares, Leto said his character is a highly advanced program who has entered the real world on a do-or-die mission to fulfill his directive, and promised that the movie will hit you right in the grid wherever that is. In addition to Leto and Bridges, Tron: Ares is directed by Joachim Rnning and its stars include Gillian Anderson, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, and Cameron Monaghan.

  • More than 1,200 rallies rally worldwide protest Trump and Musk
    www.theverge.com
People are gathering in cities all over the United States and globally to protest an illegal, billionaire power grab by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Theyre being put on by over 150 different organizations, including civil rights groups, labor unions, and LGBTQ+ advocates, and span more than 1,200 locations.Last weekend, Tesla Takedown protests targeted Tesla showrooms around the country to show disapproval for Musk, its CEO, who has spearheaded an effort to carry out mass federal workforce layoffs and hollow out government agencies. As Teslas sales have plummeted this quarter, Musk has threatened to go after the companys critics, while the FBI has created a task force to investigate individual acts of vandalism and other actions aimed at the company. The scope of these protests is much broader, targeting both Trump and Musk, who the Hands Off website accuses (accurately) of shuttering Social Security offices, firing essential workers, eliminating consumer protections, and gutting Medicaid. The Verges Mia Sato is in Manhattans Bryant Park in New York City, where she took the above video. She told me it wasnt clear how many people are there, but that its wall to wall everywhere despite the fact that its raining here and really nasty. My colleague Lauren Feiner, who attended the protest in Washington, DC, said the protest there is very big, thousands here around the Washington monument. She described it as very peaceful and orderly, with attendees listening quietly to the speakers, occasionally chanting in response.People gather to protest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Photo: Jessica TomanJessica Toman, who went to the protest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, texted the above image to me. A person posting images of the same protest on Bluesky guessed that protesters numbered in the thousands. It looks like a similar story in Boston, where thousands are seen in this video from today:Fox 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul posted aerial footage of a massive crowd gathered at the State Capitol building in St. Paul, Minnesota:Demonstrators gathered in massive numbers in Daley Plaza in Chicago, Illinois, too, where a CBS Chicago livestream showed what looked like many thousands of people streaming from one side of the street to another for many blocks while this story was being written. Protests are also taking place overseas, in cities like Berlin, Germany and London, England. Its not just major cities. Hundreds appear to have shown up to protest in cities like St. Augustine, Florida, which the US Census Bureau estimates has less than 16,000 people, and Riverhead, New York, where only about 36,000 people live. Cars honked in apparent support of a protest in Manhattan, Kansas (under 54,000 residents), according to the Bluesky user who posted this video:A similar scene plays out in this video, apparently taken in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, a town of fewer than 4,000 people, today:Heres a gallery with some more images taken by Sato, Toman, and The Verges Chris Welch:1/13Protesters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. • Microsoft has created an AI-generated version of Quake
    www.theverge.com
Microsoft unveiled its Xbox AI era earlier this year with a new Muse AI model that can generate gameplay. While it looked like Muse was still an early Microsoft Research project, the Xbox maker is now allowing Copilot users to try out Muse through an AI-generated version of Quake II.The tech demo is part of Microsofts Copilot for Gaming push, and features an AI-generated replica of Quake II that is playable in a browser. The Quake II level is very basic and includes blurry enemies and interactions, and Microsoft is limiting the amount of time you can even play this tech demo. While Microsoft originally demonstrated its Muse AI model at 10fps and a 300 x 180 resolution, this latest demo runs at a playable frame rate and at a slightly higher resolution of 640 x 360. Its still a very limited experience though, and more of hint at what might be possible in the future.Microsoft is still positioning Muse as an AI model that can help game developers prototype games. When Muse was unveiled in February, Microsoft also mentioned it was exploring how this AI model could help improve classic games, just like Quake II, and bring them to modern hardware. You could imagine a world where from gameplay data and video that a model could learn old games and really make them portable to any platform where these models could run, said Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer in February. Weve talked about game preservation as an activity for us, and these models and their ability to learn completely how a game plays without the necessity of the original engine running on the original hardware opens up a ton of opportunity. Its clear that Microsoft is now training Muse on more games than just Bleeding Edge, and its likely well see more short interactive AI game experiences in Copilot Labs soon. Microsoft is also working on turning Copilot into a coach for games, allowing the AI assistant to see what youre playing and help with tips and guides. Part of that experience will be available to Windows Insiders through Copilot Vision soon.See More:

  • The 7 writing apps I used to start and finish my book
    www.theverge.com
Theres a famous two-decade-old Paris Review interview with Haruki Murakami in which he, one of the worlds most celebrated novelists, details his daily routine. He wakes up at 4AM, works for five hours, goes for a run, reads, goes to bed, and then repeats it all over again. The rigor and repetition are the point.I am not Haruki Murakami. In addition to my work at The Verge, I write novels my second one is out today and while I admire Murakamis commitment to an immovable schedule, Ive found that I produce my best work when Im constantly rethinking routines, processes, and, mostly, how Im writing. In the modern age, that means what software Im using. What I am about to describe will be a nightmare to anyone who likes all of their tools to work harmoniously. All of these apps are disconnected and do not interoperate with each other in any way. Many of the things they do are redundant and overlap. I suppose this process is quite the opposite of frictionless but thats precisely the point. Im not sure I believe that ambitious creative work is borne from a perfectly efficient workflow. This is, instead, a journey of moving the work through different pieces of software, depending on what it needed or how I needed to interface with it. Just as being in different locations can inspire or challenge new ideas, moving work through different writing environments can be that shift for your text. What Im about to detail is less about the specific pieces of software, and more how one might change their approach depending on what the work needs. At least, thats how it is for me. Maybe it might be for you, too.Idea collectionWhen I start writing a book, I need to quite literally collect my thoughts. Its the fun part when the project is all potential, before the realities of how painful it will be to actually make it have set in. Ill find inspiration in things Im reading, watching, and listening to; ideas will come to me while Im riding the subway, when I cant sleep at night, and even sometimes in the middle of meetings.Everyone has specific uses for their notes apps, and there are so many available. The slightly counterintuitive / deranged thing is that I use two different ones. Each serves a different purpose.I use Bear for structured ideas like character sketches or thematic concepts, and I make use of the apps lightweight tagging system to stay organized. For entirely loose thoughts, I usually paste things into Notes and dont worry about formatting, context, whatever I just know it is saved somewhere. (Actually, I have a very adverse reaction to how Notes looks, but its the one where my partner prefers to share grocery lists and streaming passwords, so Im stuck with it.)The important thing here isnt that these apps are especially good or tailored to any purpose. I just have a different environment to open on my phone, depending on the type of idea I need to save. One I use when Im being thoughtful, and another when I need to get something down quickly. And in the moments when I need to save something super fast, I wont even use a notes app at all Ill just text myself. Nothing about Bear or Notes interact with each other, and, eventually, I will have to move any useful text out of them. Both of them sync quite nicely to desktop apps, so copying and pasting stuff to a new place is a fairly painless, if not tedious, process. This is, for me, the value of notes apps: combining scraps of ideas, so that you can turn them into something useful later.DraftingI dont stop taking notes when Im writing in fact, that only increases as the book starts to take shape and really live in my brain. But the place I spent the most time focused on deliberate, actual writing was in iA Writer, my minimal, zero-frills word processor of choice. This was the software I opened when I sat down to do the exhausting work of novel writing.Ive tried a handful of other apps, but this is the one I keep returning to, even though it costs $50 for mobile and another $50 if you want the desktop version. Looking back, this is a pretty ludicrous amount of money to spend just because I like the apps default typeface. (Though, when youre going to spend over 100 hours looking at something, $100 seems less egregious.) Theres a sea of free apps that accomplish the very basic task of letting you type, so find the one that makes you feel the most comfortable. The first draft is the hardest part, so anything you can do to ease that process is worth it.I drafted almost entirely on an iPad not any of the high-end models, but Apples entry-level one with the crummy keyboard attachment. I just wanted a device dedicated to being a writing tool. (I wrote my first book on a Chromebook that was too slow to meaningfully browse the internet; eventually, I had to send it to the e-waste pickup when it was too sluggish to open Google Docs.) On the iPad, I removed most of the default apps, and the only other things I installed were the Kindle app and some PDF readers. No games, no streaming services. I know some writers that work from start to finish. Im a little more chaotic in that I write in absolutely no order. This becomes a problem later, since the most important part of a narrative is structure. So at a certain point, when I had enough words written (usually around 60,000 words), I moved things into several different Google Docs so I could start to separate out scenes and chapters. If iA Writer is for getting words on the page, Docs is where I finish and begin to revise a book. This is where it becomes a legible story.I dont have too much to say about Google Docs that you dont already know. Its the word processor that Ive used the most throughout my life, so its also the most familiar and most convenient. We use Google Docs all day long at The Verge, so writing a book in it also makes it feel like work, which is an admission in a way: that now, we have to do work. The use of AI, especially when it comes to writing, is controversial for a myriad of good reasons. I know a lot of authors that wholesale reject the use of them. I dont personally feel that they are immoral; I mostly find them quite unhelpful. For my work at The Verge, I find myself testing them somewhat regularly just to know whats out there. (I do think AI is quite useful for rough language translation.) Just as Microsoft Word was designed for business memos, the incentive of AI-generated writing is to produce copious amounts of banal web copy or cheery emails. Im not interested in using AI to generate any of my work because, frankly, I like doing the work. Making art, as Ted Chiang has argued, is a series of decisions. The convenience of AI is that it makes decisions for you. But then, really, what is the point of writing if you let something else do it for you?RevisingThis was when things got a little weird. Google Docs has a hard time with writing that goes over a certain length that threshold, Ive found, is around 15,000 words. So my book was separated into large sections, and I created an index linked to all the chapters, also as a Google Doc. By this point, Im off the iPad and back on a laptop; my browser has tabs open to each of the seven separate Docs that comprise my draft. For me, revising isnt as hard as finishing a first draft, but it is an organizational challenge. On one hand, you have to keep balancing things on a sentence, paragraph, and chapter level; on the other, you cant lose sight of the books entire structure. Having the manuscript spread across so many different documents was proving cumbersome. So I installed Scrivener, one of the few apps I know that is actually built with book writing in mind. (What does it say that the majority of the creative writing we do is done in software designed for the workplace?) If the ideal of software in the past decade has been ease, Scrivener leans the other direction by designing something for power users. Its software that you get more out of the more effort you put into setting it up, making it your own, and wrangling its eccentricities until the quirks feel like second nature. Even the way Scrivener looks the use of multiple panes, rigid organization structures, and high information density feels like Windows software from the late 90s / early aughts. I confess, I only did light customization (the first thing I did was switch all the UI elements to a better typeface). Even then, it was quite worthwhile to use the app to organize and reorganize chapters. With the customizable metadata fields, I was able to create labels to easily sort chapters by characters points of view and track which sections needed revisions. Scrivener also lets you visualize your projects, and seeing everything laid out visually like index cards on a corkboard is extremely helpful when youre trying to weave together five plot lines. It really helped me nail down the books sequence and structure. The thing is: I actually hate writing in Scrivener, so then I moved everything back to Google Docs to finish (again, scattered across several different Docs). I did another round of revisions with my agent, and then sent it off to my editor, exported as a Word document. As much as I find Microsoft Word quite clumsy, especially on a Mac, it became necessary to eventually move a full manuscript there. Word is the industry standard for the publishing industry, and I wasnt about to ask my editor to accommodate my desire for a less ugly word processor. (It also seems like no matter how long Google tries to solve its interoperability with Words track changes, crucial things always end up getting lost in translation.)After a couple rounds with my editor, we finally felt like the manuscript was good to go to production. First, it went to the copy editor. This started in Word, but then the books interior was laid out and I had to look at proofs in Adobe Acrobat, which has its own gangly commenting system that I endured because all authors are brave.Pre-publicationA lot of time passes while a book is in production, and then you start to have meetings about actually selling the book. This is my least favorite part of the publishing process, since Im forced to think about publicity and marketing, and Im not sure anyone chooses writing fiction because their desire is to please a market.Anyway, one last app that Ive been using at David Pierces recommendation is Craft 3. The previous versions of Craft, which Id never used, were full-featured productivity apps. This third iteration pivots it to a writing environment first, with lots of productivity bells and whistles second. This has been the ideal to manage all of my pre-publication commitments, which involve writing marketing copy, planning events, and scheduling interviews. With Craft, Ive had a pretty easy time staying on top of deadlines, and Ive found it less fidgety than similar tools like Notion. So, if youve been keeping track, the journey looks like this:Bear / Apple Notes iA Writer Google Docs Scrivener Google Docs Microsoft Word Adobe AcrobatThere are a few things all these apps have in common. First, they all have reliable phone and desktop versions. I dont use each one equally, but its nice to have access to the text no matter where Im working. Second, each piece of software is built around a core strength, rather than trying to be good at everything. Scrivener is the only outlier here, since it suffers from feature bloat, but you can also really make it work for you if you put in the elbow grease. (Theres a whole subculture of Scrivener users and tinkerers multiple friends have recommended Jaime Greenes online courses.)I have a third book under contract, which means Im committed to doing this whole process all over again. Well, not this process, exactly if Ive learned anything, its that Ill have to reinvent the whole thing for myself as I write, and that means trying a lot of new software. Even if it was possible to create the perfect app, one that could capture the journey of writing a book from conception to publication, Im still not sure I would use it. The limitations of each tool forced me to be thoughtful. The friction made me ask, at every turn: what does the book need now?A workflow is for getting things done efficiently. Embracing mess is how you write a book.See More:

  • Views are lies
    www.theverge.com
Views are the most visible metric on the internet. You can see, in more or less real time, how many views something got on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and most other video platforms. X tracks views for every single thing you post, as does Threads. A view is the universal currency of success more views, more fun.But its all nonsense. Views are nothing. Views are lies. You may not need me to remind you of this Weve known for years that view counts are meaningless, to the point that Facebook wound up getting sued for aggressively inflating view counts in an effort to convince people to make Facebook videos. Others have written thoughtfully about how stupid view counts are. But we still talk about view counts, view counts are still everywhere, so lets talk once again about view counts.A view, in reality, is not a universal metric. Its not really anything. It is whatever a platform wants it to be, which usually has no actual correlation to whether someone actually encountered and experienced a piece of content. You can just make the views whatever you want! And if you dont like the way the numbers look, make views something else!Lets just run through a few of these, shall we? The simplest ones to understand are the social platforms: Instagram, TikTok, and (as of last week) YouTube Shorts all count a view the second a video starts playing. This is objectively absurd. Every time you scroll, even if you immediately jump to the next video, the platform logs that you watched the video the same as if youd seen the whole thing. Thats like saying, if youre in a Best Buy and you walk past a TV playing Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, youve now technically seen Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. Congratulations, youre a pirate. There are a lot of ways to game the social media ecosystem. One of them is to keep redefining your terms. In a way, though, that ridiculously easy bar to clear is actually a more accurate measure than some others. On Facebook, for instance, a view is defined as the number of times a reel or video was played, plus the number of times photos or text were on screen. Since videos autoplay all over the platform, those two metrics are effectively the same thing. The metric is so unhelpful that Facebook actually offers creators two other numbers: three-second video views, also known as people who pressed play, and one-minute video views, which is at least slightly closer to people who actually watched this thing. Those numbers arent public, though, because theyd be much lower. The view has been the universal Meta metric since last fall, when Facebook combined all its other performance and engagement metrics into just one. For photos, text posts, and Stories, the company wrote in a blog post, Views are calculated as the number of times they appear on a persons screen, including repeat views. That used to be a different metric your content being presented to someone was known as an impression, but they had to interact with it in some way before it became a view. Now its just views. The idea that everything in your feed counts as a view is pernicious, and its everywhereThe idea that everything in your feed counts as a view is pernicious, and its everywhere. As you scroll on X, every single post on your feed gets a view as it flows up and off your screen. Posts that appear in search results, on someones profile page anything that shows up on the page appears to be considered viewed. Xs documentation on post views is sketchy and vague, but its video rules are pretty straightforward: if the video was playing for at least two seconds, and half of the player was in view on your screen, then that counts as a view. All these videos play automatically, so were back to the same thing: if it loaded, you viewed it.The reason so many companies have embraced such stupid metrics is both simple and self-reinforcing. If youre the platform that counts views in a way that actually reflects reality, your numbers will be lower. Creators might see that, decide your platform doesnt have the juice, and start posting somewhere theyll ostensibly get more eyeballs. Advertisers might worry that theyll be broadcasting to dead air. On the social web, momentum is everything, and sometimes you have to lie about the size of your party to get the first people in the door.If you believe the metrics, this tweet was a global phenomenon. You heard about it on the news, I bet.In this way of defining views, the platforms also have all the control. Think about it: you dont press play to get the video going, and you dont have to stick around for it to count. Whatever the platform wants to get views, gets views. There is no step two, no intermediary, no actual matching of content and audience. There are just views.Even the Hollywood types are being pulled into the vortex of made-up view counts. Netflix once clocked a view only after youd completed 70 percent of something which, I should point out, is the closest thing to actually tracking whether youve watched something of any metric weve discussed so far. Now, it only takes two minutes for Netflix to decide youve watched something. Netflix actually picked two minutes because its long enough to indicate the choice was intentional. First of all, no its not. Second, Netflix knows how much you actually watched! It just wants the numbers to be higher around 35 percent higher than under the previous metric, Netflix admitted.Ironically, Netflix is one of the few streamers that explains how it calculates views at all; most keep their metrics quiet, so they can say things like it was a huge hit! without having to provide any actual information. Even YouTube is cagey about its calculations: its generally accepted wisdom that you have to watch 30 seconds of a standard YouTube video for it to count as a view, but if thats official policy I sure cant find it anywhere. It is incredibly obvious, by the way, that all the companies peddling these fake numbers know what theyre doing. If they thought public-facing view counts were legit, theyd offer those same numbers to creators and advertisers. Creators typically get to see non-public data like watch time and actual interactions, but even they are consistently being given less and less to work with. Advertisers, though, have the run of the place: YouTube and other platforms still track impressions separately from views, but only for ads. (YouTube may count every Shorts scroll as a view publicly, but it only pays creators for what it calls Engaged views.) Many platforms even tell advertisers how many people watched a quarter, half, three-quarters, or all of a video. The platforms themselves are collecting all this data and more, of course, in an effort to better tune the algorithm. They know the answers! But theyll never show them to you.Weve been doing this whole internet thing for a while now, and its pretty clear that just about all the metrics are bad. Theyve turned the internet into a game to be won, a system to be gamed, a race to the biggest numbers even when the numbers dont mean anything. Maybe wed all be better off without the numbers, but theyre not going anywhere. So all we can do is remember: views are not views. Views are lies.See More:

  • Trumps TikTok delay is against the law top Senate Intelligence Democrat says
    www.theverge.com
President Donald Trumps additional 75 day delay to TikToks sale-or-ban deadline leaves service providers like Apple, Google, and Oracle on shaky ground, and, according to one influential Democrat, is straight-up against the law. After Trump announced the extension on Friday, 12 Republican members of the House Select Committee on China, including Chair John Moolenaar (R-MI), released a joint statement in response. The statement did not address legal concerns with the second extension, but it said that any resolution must ensure that U.S. law is followed, and that the Chinese Communist Party does not have access to American user data or the ability to manipulate the content consumed by Americans. The letter says signatories look forward to more details on a proposed deal.In a separate statement, three Republican members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, including Chair Brett Guthrie (R-KY) struck a similar note, saying that, any deal must finally end Chinas ability to surveil and potentially manipulate the American people through this app.The whole thing is a sham if the algorithm doesnt move from out of Beijings handsSenate Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Mark Warner (D-VA) was more critical in a phone interview with The Verge. The whole thing is a sham if the algorithm doesnt move from out of Beijings hands, Warner said. And close to 80 percent of Republicans knew this was a national security threat will they find their voice now?Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office delaying enforcement of the TikTok divestiture law, a move legal experts already found questionable. Then, he failed to announce a deal before the new April 5th deadline amid chaos over new global tariffs. Letting the delay expire would have put US companies that serviced TikTok after the deadline at even greater risk of hefty penalties. The original Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support to address what lawmakers insisted was a pressing national security threat, then upheld by the Supreme Court in January. TikTok has long denied that the Chinese government could access US user data or put its thumb on the scales of the recommendation feed through ByteDance, but many lawmakers have consistently doubted that defense. As the Trump administration has opted to effectively ignore the law, however, Congress has been relatively quiet.Trumps unilateral extension is illegal and forces tech companies to once again decide between risking ruinous legal liability or taking TikTok offlineA few Senate Democrats, including Ed Markey (D-MA), recently warned Trump that another extension would only introduce more legal uncertainty, and some expressed doubt that some of the reported deal scenarios could even resolve the apps legal concerns. In a statement after Trumps second extension, Markey says while hed like to see the deadline pushed, Trumps unilateral extension is illegal and forces tech companies to once again decide between risking ruinous legal liability or taking TikTok offline. He called the move unfair to those companies and unfair to TikToks users and creators. Instead, Trump should go through Congress to pass Markeys bill to the extend the deadline, he says. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), a member of the China Committee whos criticized the law and warned it will harm free expression and creators livelihoods, also wants to see a solution go through Congress, but is seeking a full repeal of the law. Still, he called Trumps delay a good step. The new statements from China Committee and E&C Republicans appear to be the first coordinated moves to put a firm line in the sand on the topic. Some Republicans who support the divest-or-ban law have previously urged Trumps compliance in one-off statements or writings. Moolenaar previously warned in an op-ed that an adequate deal must fully break ties with ByteDance after reports that Trump was considering a deal with Oracle that would potentially leave some ties intact. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) told reporters earlier this week that if a deal doesnt comply with the statute, he would advise the President against it. If he cant get a deal to sell the company in a way that fully complies, Hawley thinks Trump ought to enforce the statute and ban TikTok. This middle way, I dont think is viable.Warner maintains that lawmakers want a TikTok sale that keeps the app in the US, and he says the Biden administration should have been more aggressive in getting negotiations started. He remains concerned that TikToks ownership structure could allow a foreign adversary government to influence young Americans. During the negotiations, we saw the enormous bias in TikTok on things like the Uyghurs, the Hong Kong protests, the conflict in Gaza, says Warner. That was how we got 80 percent of the vote. Warner says he remains concerned about the security of US user data, but sees the potential for TikTok to be used to shape public opinion as the more serious threat. Still, lawmakers seem unlikely to do much beyond (maybe) trying to pass a new law should Trump continue to flout the existing one. Congress, says Hawley, we dont have an enforcement arm of our own.See More:

  • We just declared a trade war with the world
    www.theverge.com
Nice economy you have there, said President Donald Trumps administration. It would be a shame if something happened to it.The something, announced earlier this week, is a set of globally applied tariffs that make no sense on their face. No sane economist would endorse this. Through a combination of stupidity, incompetence and sheer gangsterism, the Trump administration has decided to levy a series of taxes that encourage blatant corruption, entirely fail to encourage American manufacturing growth, and leave people and companies poorer. That is, assuming that the taxes come into play at all. This is the craziest of the crazy things weve seen thus far.The central, persistent thing Trump seems to misunderstand about tariffs is that they are paid in the US by people in the US. A reasonable person might also remember that he tried them a few years ago in a trade war, to negative effect. We have, as a nation, shot ourselves in the dick. But dont take my word for it! Here are some actual experts:This is the craziest of the crazy things weve seen thus far, says Chris Barrett, professor of economics at Cornell Universitys SC Johnson School of Business. This is probably the biggest single-day tax rise and for sure the largest tariff since World War I, if not ever in the history of the country, says Christopher Meissner, a professor of economics at the University of California Davis. This is a bad idea and its going to hurt Americans, says Justin Wolfers, a professor of economics at the University of Michigans Ford School of Public Policy.Theres so much wrong with this approach that its hard to know where to start, writes Paul Krugman. There will be blood, writes JP Morgans chief global economist. He has raised the risk of a recession this year to 60 percent. Also, the stock market shit the bed, an estimated $3.1 trillion loss of value in just one day. It fell more than $3 trillion the next day, as China declared retaliatory tariffs, for a record $6.6 trillion drop in just two days. There are hints that these tariffs are the buffoonish products of actual clowns. Take the tariffs on uninhabited islands, perhaps part of a trade war on penguins. Or the tariffs on an island occupied primarily by a US military base. Then theres the math behind the tariffs, which uses a puzzling formula that is remarkably similar to what several chatbots spit back if asked. The official formulation uses fancy Greek letters that effectively cancel each other out. The Financial Times a funnier European version of The Wall Street Journal translated it into the stupidest chart youll see today. The US has shaken the worlds confidence, and there are consequences for thatScott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, doesnt seem to know the answers to some basic tariff questions when he was asked about them, such as why Canada and Mexico were missing from Trumps big nonsense tariff chart. Bessent also said he wasnt part of the tariff negotiations with countries such as China, which is, frankly, weird. If the secretary of the treasury isnt in the loop on tariff negotiations, uh, who is?The best-case scenario for all this, which still sucks, is that these tariffs set to roll out in stages on April 5th and April 9th will be abandoned. Trump has been threatening devastating tariffs on Mexico, Canada, or Colombia for months, only to back down at the first sign of resistance. Even the generally docile members of Congress are exhibiting signs of noticing this is a bad idea, and are at least paying lip service to restraining Trumps power. But this frankly bizarre US vs. Everyone trade war could still be devastating to the US economy for years to come, even if the nonsense tariffs arent enacted. The US has shaken the worlds confidence, and there are consequences for that.Tariffs of any kind are disruptive. Since companies know they will be paying extra on items they import, they will pass the increase on to consumers, especially the poorest ones. They are likely to look for ways to cut costs and are unlikely to splash out on investments, says Meissner. Consumers are likely to do the same thing cutting back on spending and holding onto necessities for longer than they would have otherwise, at least in part because they know theres higher likelihood theyll be fired if companies trim costs.Wages will likely remain the same, even as everything costs moreThe design of these new tariffs amplifies all of this. Theyre global with a minimum tax of at least 10 percent, so companies cant easily avoid them by moving supply chains around, like many did during Trumps first trade war. And already we are seeing disruptions. The Nintendo Switch 2 has delayed preorders. Advertising businesses like Meta, Google, and Amazon are bracing for pullbacks on spending, especially from Chinese companies. Expect the price of groceries, clothes, and cars in particular to rise steeply. China has announced its retaliatory tariff, which will doubtless make those estimated price rises worse, and it may be the first of many countries to do so.These increases differ from the inflation that happened in the wake of COVID, Wolfers says. During that time, increased prices meant more money for companies, which could then be used to pay their employees more. But because again, tariffs are a tax this money will go straight to the Trump Administration. So wages will likely remain the same, even as everything costs more.Lets talk for a hot minute about how the economy was doing pre-tariff. That dip in consumer confidence predated the latest tariff announcement. The actions of DOGE firing and unfiring people, slashing social services, freezing previously-agreed-on grants, and generally running amok in the government already shook consumers. In March, consumers expectations for the future were the lowest theyd been in more than a decade. In particular, people were nervous about their employment, which is the kind of thing that leads people to cut spending.A great deal of economics is basically just feelings. People are feeling bad, and the tariffs have them feeling worse. Thats the kind of thing that can spiral into a recession. JP Morgans macro economist had previously put the risk of a recession at about 40 percent. Thats not the only bank to do so S&P Global, Goldman, Barclays, Bank of America and Deutsche Bank all agree that the risk is now considerably higher, though they disagree about how much higher. Those deals are a way of making people beholden to you.The economy will perform worse with tariffs, says Wolfers. That doesnt necessarily mean a recession it could simply mean slower growth but nonetheless some economists, including Meissner, are expecting one.The ostensible reason behind these tariffs is to drive trade deficits to zero, but that makes no sense. A trade deficit essentially means that the US is receiving many goods and services from a country in exchange for pieces of paper, and they are receiving fewer goods and services (and thus giving us less paper), Wolfers says. Who cares? Economics isnt a zero sum game. Many of our beautiful and brilliant Verge subscribers are in a trade deficit with The Verge, as they pay us $7 a month for our fine text products, and we buy zero dollars worth of things from them. Trumps supposed ultimate goal is to bring manufacturing back to the US, but this isnt going to happen either. That requires a less uncertain environment so companies will invest in building here, for one thing. It also requires a workforce and its unclear why Americans would choose to work in manufacturing jobs as long as they have other options.Pragmatically, there are two things that explain these idiotic taxes. The first is that the Trump Administration is run by fucking bozos whose main qualification for their job is that they are Donald Trumps spineless yes-men. The second is that Trump himself is by temperament a gangster, and hes looking for leverage over every country and business that deals with the US. For instance, domestic farmers have been trying, unsuccessfully thus far, to get exemptions to tariffs so they dont get economically drawn and quartered buying more expensive equipment while selling less food abroad, as one farmer put it. Trump has indicated hes open to making deals to lower tariffs on individual countries. Uncertainty around bribery and exemptions actually make this clown show worseThose deals are a way of making people beholden to you, says Barrett. Im torn on whether this is just not well-thought out, or whether the uncertainty is part of the design. What might one have to do in order to get such an exemption? Well, Colombia, Canada and Mexico provide examples: make a silly concession that lets Trump declare victory while changing nothing of note. After all, Trump is addled by television to a degree that as long as something sounds good on Fox News, its a win for him.As for individual industries, we already have indications in the form of tech moguls generous donations, generous production deals for Trump family hagiographies, killing DEI programs to make conservative ideologues happy, and massive pro bono law firm deals. But that uncertainty around bribery and exemptions actually makes this clown show worse. The idea behind tariffs is that in the long term, it lets American companies more effectively compete by raising prices on foreign goods. That gives American-made goods a chance to raise their own prices as well, juicing profits. But for that to happen, companies have to invest in building things in America and as previously mentioned, the uncertainty about how long any given tariffs may last is likely to lead to more of a wait-and-see approach. Which kinda defeats the purpose. We have undercut the good faith and standing of the government in the worlds eyes.Markets dont like uncertainty. Neither do trade partners. America is likely to be hit with reciprocal tariffs, including from our allies, increasing the countrys pain. The Smoot-Hawley tariffs, famous to anyone whos read Dave Barry Slept Here, introduced in 1930, are widely credited with worsening the Great Depression. The Trump tariffs are even bigger than those disastrous ones, based on nonsensical math that, for instance, hits an average EU tariff rate of about 2.7 percent with a reciprocal rate of 20 percent. The uncertainty also hurts the US politically. We have undercut the good faith and standing of the government in the worlds eyes, Barrett says. This undermines the dollar as a reserve currency for the world one of its important functions for American political power, allowing us to borrow money more cheaply than most other countries. And indeed, the value of the dollar plummeted after the tariffs were announced to a six-month low against the euro. The USs bad behavior here is an incentive for people to move their money elsewhere. This is like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. Previously, the Trump administration weakened the dollar by announcing its crypto reserve. Musk unilaterally decided to tank our ability to work as the worlds R&D hub, attracting global talent and boosting our economy and, additionally, taking an ax to American soft power in the process. Congress, which has chosen to abdicate control over spending, is effectively sidelined. Now the tariffs further endanger American wealth and safety. The only real questions are when were going to get the explosion, and how big itll be.See More:

  • DOGE staffers are listed in the FCC directory
    www.theverge.com
Elon Musks Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has infiltrated the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an agency that has a say over resources Musk needs or could benefit from for some of his private sector business, The Verge has learned.Three people who have been identified as DOGE staffers are listed in a public directory called Finding People at the FCC. Tarak Makecha, Jordan Wick, and Jacob Altik are all listed in the FCC directory, with email addresses associated with the agency. Each is listed under the office OCH, which in other agency documents refers to the Office of the Chairman.Makecha is a finance executive who, according to LinkedIn, has most recently worked in a drone detection software company and previously worked at Tesla. Makecha has reportedly been involved through DOGE at OPM and the State Department. Wick is a former Waymo engineer whos reportedly been given access to systems at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Altik is a lawyer whos reportedly been involved at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).Are you a current or former US federal government worker? Reach out securely and anonymously with tips from a non-work device to Lauren Feiner via Signal at laurenfeiner.64.DOGE has recently expanded into other enforcement agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission, as The Verge reported earlier on Friday. The FCCs authority over radio, TV, broadband, and satellite intersects with Musks businesses, like granting certain permissions for SpaceXs Starlink operations. Its role as a regulator and enforcer also means it stores information on SpaceX and its competitors in order to make decisions. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has previously said that Musk would recuse himself from potential conflicts. The FCC did not immediately respond to a request for comment about what the DOGE staffers role will be at the agency or what restrictions there will be on their data access.

  • Trumps tariffs killed his TikTok deal
    www.theverge.com
Earlier this week, when it seemed as though TikToks fate in the US would actually be decided by April 5th, everyone from Amazon to the founder of OnlyFans was coming out of the woodwork to buy it.As it turns out, none of them had a chance. And now, thanks to President Donald Trumps tariff war, no one may get to buy TikTok. People familiar with the matter tell me that, despite all of the bids for the app, the White House was only seriously considering an Oracle-led consortium, which included many of ByteDances biggest investors who were set to roll their stakes into a new, US entity. The proposal, which would have licensed the apps algorithm from China and shuffled some shareholder money around to make TikTok look more independent from ByteDance, was set to be announced before President Trump went nuclear on tariffs. As others have reported and Ive independently confirmed, his tariff announcement on Wednesday torched any immediate chance of the TikTok proposal being blessed by the Chinese government. On Friday, less than an hour after Trump said he was pushing back the clock on banning TikTok by another 75 days to finish working out a deal, ByteDance issued its first statement on the situation, saying that any agreement will be subject to approval under Chinese law. After suggesting on Thursday that China would approve a TikTok deal in exchange for tariff relief, the president seemed less confident on Friday: We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!).Anyone who has been closely following this tortured saga that is the TikTok ban is exhausted. Now, five years after he first tried to ban it, Trump has seemingly torpedoed the plan that was finally going to keep TikTok running. His friend Larry Ellison was going to secure more business for Oracle by reviving the broad strokes of the Project Texas security proposal that was made to the previous administration (albeit this time with fewer security guarantees, since this administration doesnt really care about national security threats the app may or may not pose). TikToks investors and employees were finally going to get certainty about the apps fate. ByteDance was going to effectively stay in the drivers seat while maintaining control of its algorithm. And Trump was going to get to say that he saved TikTok. TikTok gets to continue operating in the US for a while longer, thanks to Trumps Department of Justice not enforcing a ban that was passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court. TikToks US hosting providers, including Apple, Google, and Oracle, are seemingly still okay with this situation despite the fact that they are very much breaking the law. And unless Trump ultimately eases on tariffs against China, TikTok may end up banned after all. What a giant farce. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff returned to Amazon this week, coming back to the company just about two years after he left, Bloomberg reports. Hes now a vice president at the company, and he will be heading up the Ring, Blink, Amazon Key, and Sidewalk teams.Siminoff is replacing Liz Hamren, who had taken over following Siminoffs initial departure. Hamren and the team have done an awesome job driving the business, delivering strong results, and bringing a lot of delightful experiences to neighbors, Siminoff says in an Amazon Q&A. He adds that the AI transformation happening right now is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. In the Q&A, Siminoff also says that he and Panos Panay, Amazons SVP of devices and services, have talked a lot about experiences we can create with devices that are awesome on their own, but even better together. I think youll continue to see a lot of that from us moving forward helping customers stay safe, connected, and informed as part of a magical connected experience. The day after Siminoff originally left Amazon, Siminoff sold a new company, Honest Days Work, to Latch, which he helped rebrand to Door.com. The company announced late last year that he would be moving into an advisory role in 2025.

  • Price hikes, idled factories, layoffs: how car companies are responding to Trumps tariffs
    www.theverge.com
President Donald Trumps 25 percent tariffs on all auto-related imports have been called a debacle of epic proportions and a sure-fire way to tank the auto market by crushing demand. Analysts have been predicting everything from $12,000 per vehicle price hikes to the possible Cubanization of the US car fleet. Now that theyve had a few days to process the news, the automakers are starting to get their ducks in a row and make some moves.Heres how each company is responding:AudiNow that the tariffs are in effect, the German automaker is holding all vehicles assembled in Mexico and overseas at US ports until further notice, according to Automotive News. Audi currently has 37,000 units in dealer stock and at port which remain unaffected by the new import fees and are ready to sell. Audi reportedly said it would be marking unaffected units with a $0 No Added Import Fee option code for easy tracking. We are evaluating how to best proceed for our customers and our dealers, Audi spokesperson Mark Dahncke said.BMWBMW hasnt announced any specific response yet, but the company said last month that it expected a 1 billion hit to its 2025 earnings as a result of tariffs.BMW spokesperson Phil DiIanni declined to comment, aside from sending a statement highlighting the automakers commitment to making cars in the US.FordFord was first out of the gate with a response geared toward people panic shopping, hoping to capitalize on pre-tariff sticker prices. The automaker launched a new program called From America, For America that offers employee pricing to everyone. The promo runs April 3rd through June 2nd and offers significant savings on a number of 2024 and 2025 gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and diesel Ford and Lincoln vehicles, according to the company. EV customers will get the discount on top of the Ford Power Promise deal, which extends through June 30th and includes a complimentary home charger. Excluded from the limited-time offer are Ford Raptor models, 2025 Expedition and Navigator SUVs, and Super Duty trucks. We understand that these are uncertain times for many Americans, Ford says on its website. Whether its navigating the complexities of a changing economy or simply needing a reliable vehicle for your family, we want to help. The discount may help Ford clear out some of its ample inventory, which stood at a 74-day supply of vehicles on its dealers lots at the end of March, compared to 50 days for GM, according to JP Morgan Global Research.Image: Getty ImagesGMGeneral Motors responded by telling employees at its assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that it would increase production of light-duty trucks and add some temporary hourly workers to backfill for employees during summer vacation. The company is also considering shifting some of its truck production from Mexico to the US. GM is not making any physical upgrades to the plant, just adding additional temporary people to support it.The Fort Wayne plant makes the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, which GM also manufactures at plants in Mexico and Canada. About half of GMs large pickup truck production is done in Mexico and Canada, according to a recent Barclays report.HondaThe Japanese automaker may not be merging with Nissan, but its already making moves to adjust to the tariffs. The company is planning on producing its next-generation Civic hybrid in Indiana instead of Mexico to avoid import duties, Reuters reported last month.Meanwhile, Honda dealers are reassuring their customers that most of their most popular vehicles are made in the US. And spokesperson Chris Martin referred to the Autos Drive America trade group, which asserts that it is impossible to rebuild those supply chains in a matter of weeks, especially with the added financial burden of tariffs.Hyundai / KiaHyundai gets the award for most Trump-appeasing announcement, with a commitment to spend $21 billion in the US (despite most of that investment already being underway). But while Trump was happy to brandish the announcement as proof his tariffs were working, the Korean automaker was also reportedly warning its dealers that prices could go up as a result of the new import duties.Hyundai Motor, including Kia, Hyundai and Genesis, remains committed to the long-term growth of the U.S. automotive industry through localized production and innovation, spokesperson James Bell said in an email.Jaguar Land RoverJLR is holding off on any immediate decisions, telling UK-based media that its local business remains resilient. But residents of the town where Jaguar operates its factory were dour about the news.Im appalled. It will kill Jaguar Land Rover here in the town, one resident told The Guardian. There could potentially be job losses because JLR export enormously to America. The knock-on effect is going to be enormous.Mercedes-BenzThe luxury automaker is reportedly considering pulling its least expensive models, like its entry-level GLA, from the US market, Bloomberg said. But no decisions have been made yet, as spokesperson Amanda Painter said that Mercedes-Benz was still currently assessing the impact of the US-tariff lines.Image: Bloomberg via Getty ImagesNissanNissan initially said that it would cut a shift at the Smyrna, Tennessee, assembly plant where it makes its popular Rogue SUV once Trumps tariffs went into effect. But now that the tariffs are here, the company reversed itself, committing to keeping two shifts at the factory.Nissan is making some other hard decisions, though. The automaker said it would pause orders of the Infiniti QX55, which is built at its COMPAS plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Nissan said production is expected to continue for those models sold in other markets. We are reviewing our production and supply chain operations to identify optimal solutions for efficiency and sustainability, spokesperson Lloryn Love-Carter said in a statement. Our objective is to implement the most effective industrial strategy to offer Nissan and Infiniti customers great product and strong value.PorschePorsche has never been the cheapest sports car on the block, but tariffs are likely to put renewed pressure on its prices. Last month, the companys executives told reporters that it was likely to pass the cost of tariffs along to its customers, according to The Wall Street Journal.StellantisThe parent company of Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Maserati, and others has good news and bad news to share in response to the tariffs. The good news is that its copying Fords idea of employee price discounts to the public. The bad news is that its temporarily laying off 900 workers while pausing production at several factories.Stellantis said it would be pausing production at its Windsor, Ontario, plant for two weeks, from April 7th to April 14th, with operations resuming on April 21st. Its also pausing production at its Toluca, Mexico, plant for the month of April. The layoffs will affect workers at the Warren Stamping and Sterling Stamping plants in Michigan, as well as the Indiana Transmission Plant and Kokomo Transmission Plant and Kokomo Casting Plant in Indiana. We understand that the current environment creates uncertainty, Antonio Filosa, chief operating officer for the Americas at Stellantis, said in an email to employees. Be assured that we are very engaged with all of our key stakeholders, including top government leaders, unions, suppliers and dealers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, as we work to manage and adapt to these changes.Stellantis employee pricing program will run through April 30th. That said, CEO Elon Musk has made several comments in response to commentary on X that Tesla is better insulated from the new fees as a result of selling only vehicles made in the US to American customers.Important to note that Tesla is NOT unscathed here, Musk said. The tariff impact on Tesla is still significant.Image: Getty ImagesToyotaThe biggest automaker in the world is keeping its cards close to its vest for now. • Microsoft brings Copilot Vision to Windows and mobile for AI help in the real world
    www.theverge.com
Microsoft is bringing its Copilot Vision feature to Windows and mobile, moving it beyond the web. Copilot Vision was a big part of Microsofts Copilot redesign last year, but so far, it has been limited to Edge webpages to help guide you through what youre seeing.Copilot Vision will now be able to analyze real-time video from a mobile camera, allowing the AI assistant to offer tips for keeping plants healthy or decorating advice for your home. Microsoft is launching Copilot Vision inside the Copilot app for iOS and Android today, and a similar feature is also coming to Windows soon. The Copilot app on Windows is being updated to support Copilot Vision across your entire PC. This lets Microsofts AI assistant do things like coach you through using Adobe Photoshop features, or analyzing the photos and webpages youre looking at.This is different than Microsofts Recall feature on Copilot Plus PCs. Recall automatically takes snapshots if you enable the feature, whereas Copilot Vision is more like screen sharing an app or your entire desktop in a Microsoft Teams call.Copilot Vision on Windows will be available to Windows Insiders next week, and Microsoft says it will roll it out more broadly once testing is complete. The company is also updating Copilot with a host of new features today. The AI assistant now supports memory, personalization, web-based actions, podcast creation, deep research, and more. You can read about all of Copilots new features here. Related:

  • Trump delays TikTok ban again
    www.theverge.com
Donald Trumps initial 75-day delay against enforcement of the TikTok ban law wouldve expired this weekend, but on Friday, he announced on Truth Social that I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days. This week, Trump announced new taxes on products coming into the US, including a 34 percent tariff rate against China. He has said that he would consider lowering that rate in exchange for China agreeing to a TikTok deal, but with the deadline closing in, its Trump who decided to extend the delay instead of having TikToks app shut down again. Despite several publicly announced bids to buy TikTok, its Chinese owner, ByteDance, has shown no inclination to sell or reduce its stake in the company as required by the law passed last year. When the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act took effect just ahead of Trumps inauguration, TikTok voluntarily turned its service off for a day. At the same time, Google, Apple, and others removed it and other ByteDance-owned apps from their stores as required. After his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order telling the Attorney General and Department of Justice to take no action to enforce the Act or impose any penalties against any entity for any noncompliance with the Act. But with the law still on the books after the Supreme Court declined to delay it and with the risk of billions of dollars in penalties, the app took nearly a month to return to US app stores.Trump:My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days. We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!). This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security! We do not want TikTok to go dark. We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter!Developing

  • Here’s the original source code for Microsoft’s very first product
    www.theverge.com
Bill Gates celebrated Microsofts 50th Anniversary by sharing the source code that created the companys foundation. The 157-page PDF available to download on Gates blog contains the origins of Altair Basic a programming language interpreter for the MITS Altair 8800 microcomputer and remains the coolest code Ive ever written to this day, according to the Microsoft co-founder.Altair Basic was developed by Gates, fellow Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and programmer Monte Davidoff. The trio reportedly coded day and night for two months in 1975. Personal computers were extremely rare, but after seeing the Altair 8800 on the cover of a magazine, Gates and Allen believed that enabling its chip to run a version of the Basic programming language would revolutionize the industry. We considered creating a similar tool called a compiler that translates the entire program and then runs it all at once, Gates said on his blog. But we figured the line-by-line approach of an interpreter would be helpful to novice programmers since it would give instant feedback on their code, allowing them to fix any mistakes that crop up.MITS decided to license the software from Gates and Allen, and Altair Basic became the first product under their new company Micro-soft. You can check out the full code document below or on Gates blog. Not only does it have some other details about the early history of Microsoft, but the web page UI has been designed with some funky animations and graphics that pay homage to the retro coding project.See More:

  • China retaliates with tariff that matches Trump’s
    www.theverge.com
China has responded to Donald Trumps new trade tariffs with its own charges on US goods. After Trump announced the imposition of an additional 34 percent charge on Chinese imports into the US, China has announced a levy at the same rate for US goods shipped to China. It has also barred 11 US companies from trading in the country, added 16 more to an export controls list, applied new restrictions to rare earth mineral exports, filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), and started investigations into imports of American medical equipment. In a statement announcing the new tariff, Chinas finance ministry declared that the US tariff on Chinese goods seriously undermines Chinas legitimate rights and interests, and called it a typical unilateral bullying practice.Trump announced his latest levy on Chinese imports as part of new tariff rates that affect every country the US trades with, including a few uninhabited islands. It followed two separate 10 percent tariffs on China from earlier in the year, bringing the USs total tariff on Chinese goods to 54 percent. He also signed an executive order ending the de minimis exemption for packages valued below $800, which could be a death blow for Chinese retailers like Shein and Temu.China urges the United States to immediately cancel its unilateral tariff measures and resolve trade differences through consultation in an equal, respectful and mutually beneficial manner, the statement concludes. The Chinese levy will go into effect on April 10th, one day after the USs new tariff starts to apply. China has also imposed strict limits on the exports of some rare earth elements that are mined almost exclusively in China and used in electric vehicles, weapons, and other tech. Its also launching investigations into exports of X-ray tubes from America and India, amid allegations of dumping when exported goods are sold for less than their domestic price, damaging the local industry. If that sounds oddly specific, bear in mind that the US dominates the international medical device trade. The country has also barred 11 American businesses accused of military and technological cooperation with Taiwan from importing to, exporting from, or investing in China, adding them to its Unreliable Entity List. The new additions, mostly made up of drone and defense companies, include drone manufacturer Skydio, which started out making consumer drones but pivoted entirely to enterprise in 2023.A further 16 US companies have been placed under export controls, banning the export of dual-use items anything that can be used for both civilian and military purposes to those companies. The BBC reports that a further six companies have been prohibited from shipping their goods to China because of food safety concerns.Chinas Commerce Ministry also says that it has filed a new charge within the WTOs dispute settlement system, claiming that Trumps reciprocal tariffs violate WTO rules. China initially lodged a complaint with the WTO in early February after Trumps first 10 percent tariff, and updated it following the second round in March, but the WTO only describes the complaint as In consultations.

  • Honda is sending its hydrogen tech to space
    www.theverge.com
Honda is looking to the stars for its next hydrogen breakthrough. The automaker is teaming up with space tech companies Sierra Space and Tec-Masters to test its high-differential pressure water electrolysis system on the International Space Station. The test is part of Hondas vision to support life on the Moon and elsewhere in space using regenerative fuel cell technology that continuously produces hydrogen, oxygen, and electricity. Its another risky move from Honda, which is more bullish on hydrogen than most other automakers. Hydrogen-powered cars have historically faced a lot of hurdles, including fueling challenges and pricing pressures. But Honda is counting on hydrogen to help it decarbonize its vehicle fleet by 2040. And now it wants to tap into the most abundant element in the universe to power its push into space.Honda says it envisions its hydrogen-powered regenerative system as part of a human settlement on the lunar surface. But it also hopes that by stress testing the technology on the Moon, it can prove its utility on Earth. Its another risky move from Honda, which is more bullish on hydrogen than most other automakersHeres how Hondas system works: during the lunar day, the system will use electricity generated by solar panels capturing sunlight. The companys high-differential pressure water electrolysis system will then produce hydrogen and oxygen from water. When the Moon rotates away from the Sun, some of the oxygen will be used for astronauts, with the rest put toward generating electricity. The only byproduct of the electrolysis process is water, which is recycled back into the regenerative system, creating a closed-loop energy cycle.Honda plans on testing the process in the microgravity environment on the ISS. The company says it will work with NASA to transport the equipment on Sierra Spaces Dream Chaser spaceplane, with Tec-Masters as the ISS technology expert.Creating a reliable source of oxygen and electricity in space would help humans establish livable habitats off-Earth in an era when space travel seems more achievable than ever. While the science community has explored the use of electrolysis as a means to sustain life in the vacuum of space, it has found that low gravity environments will have some effect on the gas-evolving process. A study published in 2022 concluded that around 11 percent less oxygen was created through electrolysis in a lunar environment as compared to the gravity of Earth.See More:

  • Supermans latest trailer introduces his team of robot assistants
    www.theverge.com
Though Superman is clearly going to get the living daylights beat out of him at some point in James Gunns upcoming DC Studios feature, the movies latest trailer puts a spotlight on how the Man of Steel gets put back together again.During its presentation at this years CinemaCon, Warner Bros. shared an extended sneak peek from the new Superman, and the studio has just posted the footage online. For the most part, the video focuses on a very badly-wounded Superman (David Corenswet) begging for his dog, Krypto, to drag him home because hes unable to walk or fly. While its played for comedy, its a little morbid to see Supermans body flopping around like most of his bones are broken. But the scene becomes much weirder (in a good way) as Krypto drags Superman to a very inspired take on the Fortress of Solitude, where a team of cape-wearing medical robots are ready to run triage. Along with a very wild shot of the robots concentrating the suns light to heal Superman, the trailer also features longer shots of Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion).Gunn is obviously banking on audiences digging a wilder, more whimsical world of superheroes, and it might pay off when Superman hits theaters on July 11th.

  • Trump’s tariffs mean you’ll pay more for all gadgets
    www.theverge.com
If you were wondering how President Trumps tariffs may impact gadgets like smartphones, laptops, and smartwatches, theres some bad, and perhaps slightly less-bad news. Unless something changes, Trumps sweeping tariffs will lead to increased prices for consumers. But it will likely take some time before that actually happens.Modern gadgets generally arent made or assembled solely in the U.S. anymore. Device makers big and small source components from all over the world, and often have them assembled overseas before importing the final product into the country. Given that Trump has levied tariffs on every single country, it means that the cost to make all our devices will inevitably go up.The biggest thing right now is going to be the inflationary impact, says Jason Miller, professor of supply chain management at Michigan State University. If they stay in place for several months, well start to see those effects by mid-summer and certainly back-to-school season.RelatedMiller notes goods shipped from China to the U.S. will face a whopping 54 percent tariffs, including most gadgets. Vietnam, where Apple has shifted some of its manufacturing, also has a high tariff rate at 46 percent. If [companies] absorb the extra cost and dont pass it on, their profits are going to plunge and their capital investment will drop, says Miller. Or, theyll pass a good share of it onto the downstream buyer, which in many instances is the consumer.Barring any new exemptions or changes, you can expect every single device category to be negatively impacted, says Ryan Reith, group vice president of worldwide device trackers at IDC. But devices will be impacted differently. Smartphones, says Reith, have more wiggle room than TVs or PCs as they have a well-established monthly hardware payment dependence.Miller agrees, noting that its not likely that a smartphone will suddenly be 50 percent more expensive. A more reasonable expectation would be a roughly 20 percent bump. Its reasonable to expect the price of phones to go up by about 20 percent, says Jason Miller, professor of supply chain management at Michigan State University. Photo by Chris Welch / The VergeOther devices, like over-the-counter hearing aids, have even thinner margins and are therefore, much more vulnerable. Most hearing aids are manufactured in Europe or Asia, and many are assembled in countries like China, says Blake Cadwell, CEO of Soundly, an online retailer that sells over-the-counter hearing aids. Cadwell says manufacturers and brands hes spoken to are anticipating as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase in costs. Those kinds of increases, Cadwell says, could have a lasting impact on consumers. The slightly less-bad news is that consumers likely wont see any price increases right away. Thats because some device makers have increased inventory in anticipation of tariffs hitting. Miller says in the past few months, computer imports were over 70 percent higher than 2023, while cell phone imports in February 2025 were the highest since 2022. Cadwell also says Soundly is working to build reserves and that based on current inventory levels, its likely price increases wont hit the market until fall. However, thats not a guarantee that this is true for every single device maker and every gadget category. If youre looking at a laptop thats assembled in China, and youre wondering whether to buy now or wait until the fall, I would buy now.Vendors/channels have been stretching existing inventory as much as they can to avoid price increases, but close deadlines announced yesterday for tariff increases significantly ramp up the pressure. Id be surprised if even the best positioned brands in terms of inventory are able to stretch two to three weeks beyond the new tariff deadlines, says Reith. In other words, if you currently have an aging piece of tech that needs replacing, it may be a good idea to do it before inventory runs out.If youre looking at a laptop thats assembled in China, and youre wondering whether to buy now or wait until the fall, I would buy now, says Miller. As for whether these tariffs could potentially encourage Big Tech to restart domestic manufacturing, its highly unlikely. Even with these tariffs in place, its still cheaper for these companies to manufacture devices like smartphones, laptops, and wearables overseas. And even if they did want to move some industry back home, that wouldnt be possible overnight. The U.S. has lost a lot of its manufacturing capacity, particularly for consumer electronics, in the last few decades.Simon Ellis, group vice president at IDC, notes that the firm hasnt seen reshoring as a high priority in recent supply chain surveys. Its also important to remember that made in America has almost always meant assembled in America with parts coming from all over the world, he says, while acknowledging its possible that a growing number of companies may assess a return even though the cost, uncertainty, and time required are huge hurdles.Miller is a bit more blunt. These tariffs in no way would encourage domestic production of the types of devices that were talking about.See More:

  • Steve Jackson Games says tariffs are a seismic shift for board games
    www.theverge.com
The CEO of Steve Jackson Games, which makes board games and card games, says that the 54 percent tariff on goods imported from China that will go into effect on April 5th is a seismic shift for the board game industry and that prices are going up.At Steve Jackson Games, we are actively assessing what this means for our products, our pricing, and our future plans, CEO Meredith Placko says in a post. We do know that we cant absorb this kind of cost increase without raising prices. Weve done our best over the past few years to shield players and retailers from the full brunt of rising freight costs and other increases, but this new tax changes the equation entirely. In the post, Placko spells out an example of how the tariff could affect costs. A product we might have manufactured in China for $3.00 last year could now cost $4.62 before we even ship it across the ocean, she says. Add freight, warehousing, fulfillment, and distribution margins, and that once-$25 game quickly becomes a $40 product. Thats not a luxury upcharge; its survival math.RelatedPlacko adds that the company doesnt manufacture in the US because the infrastructure doesnt meaningfully exist here yet. She acknowledges that tariffs can be an effective tool when they are part of a long-term strategy to bolster domestic manufacturing. But she says that there is no national plan in place to support manufacturing for the types of products we make.If youre frustrated with the tariffs, Placko suggests writing to your elected officials. Ask them how these new policies help American creators and small businesses, she says. Because right now, it feels like they dont. The Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has also issued a grim warning. The latest imposition of a 54% tariff on products from China by the administration is dire news for the tabletop industry and the broader US economy, GAMA said, according to Polygon. Card-grading company PSA has released a statement about the new tariffs, too, saying that the company has paused direct card grading submissions from outside the US.In March, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks told Yahoo Finance that when youre talking about tariffs in the neighborhood of 20 percent plus, thats a cost that we cant fully accommodate. It will have to be passed on.See More:

  • PSA pauses card grading submissions from outside the US
    www.theverge.com
The card grading service PSA will no longer take direct submissions from outside the US in response to the Trump administrations new far-reaching tariffs. In an update on Wednesday, PSA says its reluctantly taking these measures to protect our international customers from significant tariff expenses. As noted by PSA, the tariffs are against the value of the items in the order rather than on the PSA service fee. That means sending high-value Pokmon or sports cards to PSA would result in hefty fees. Under a 10 percent tariff, for example, a card valued at $5,000 would incur a $500 fee.Though PSA is pausing international submissions now, that doesnt mean cards currently at or in transit to its facilities will escape additional charges. PSA notes that orders entering the US after 12:01AM on April 5th may be affected by tariffs, and may also face not-yet-announced retaliatory tariffs upon return. PSA will leverage available means to limit tariff exposure for customers outside of the US, the company says.PSA has already stopped accepting direct submissions from Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Mexico due to the first round of tariffs imposed earlier this year. However, PSA notes that customers in Canada and Japan can still get their cards graded by sending or bringing them to its physical locations in both countries.

  • How the Nintendo Switch 2 stacks up to the Steam Deck
    www.theverge.com
The biggest threat to the Steam Deck in 2025 wont be the arrival of other Windows-based handheld gaming PCs. Instead, itll likely be the Nintendo Switch 2, which arrives on June 5 for $449.99 smack dab between the cost of the $399 Steam Deck LCD and the $549 Steam Deck OLED. Ironically, the Steam Deck is also the Switch 2s biggest threat. While Nintendos new console may have Valves beat on screen resolution, refresh rate, and a custom Nvidia processor capable of DLSS and ray tracing, Steam trumps it in value, particularly with game prices.RelatedI get it, I get it. Theyre totally different devices. So even though comparing Nintendo and Valves hardware and software philosophies is an apples versus oranges exercise, the two devices and companies are more aligned than you might think. And thats especially true when consumers, whether because of tariffs or other economic reasons, need to choose between one or the other.Youve come to the right place, as well break down all of the specs worth caring about to show how they stack up.Pricing and availabilityAs mentioned, the Switch 2 and the Steam Deck have somewhat similar prices. The Switch 2 will launch on June 5 for $449.99 to start, though there will be a $499.99 bundle available for a limited time that includes Mario Kart World. Preorders go live on Wednesday, April 9th for the console, its accessories, and launch titles.Valves Steam Deck doesnt come with various game bundles, although there are two models to choose from: the $399 Steam Deck LCD (also known simply as Steam Deck) and the Steam Deck OLED, which starts at $549. Several specs, as well as storage amounts, differentiate the two. The Verges Sean Hollister has a review of the Steam Deck OLED that neatly sums up their differences. In the US, the Steam Deck is only available through Steam, Valves online game storefront. Internationally, its available through various stores.Display technologyThis is where things get really interesting. The Switch 2 took many by surprise by featuring a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Not only that, it supports VRR and HDR10. Compared to the launch Switch and Switch Lite, both of which had 720p LCDs of varying sizes (6.2 inches in the Switch, 5.5 inches in the Switch Lite), its a big difference in terms of added size, features, more clarity, and smoothness in how games appear onscreen. The same could be said for the Switch 2s screen improvements over the Steam Deck LCD, which has a 7-inch 60Hz LCD touchscreen (with chunky bezels) without VRR or HDR support.Image: NintendoThe Switch OLEDs 7-inch 720p OLED screen may be better than the Switch 2s screen in terms of contrast and viewing angles, but the Switch 2s is faster and better in every other metric. The Switch 2 meets its match in the Steam Deck OLED. Many hoped that Nintendo would come out of the gates with an OLED display, but that still makes Valves $549 handheld special. The Steam Deck OLED has a smaller 800p touchscreen than the Switch 2 at 7.4 inches (but without the chunky bezels of the Deck LCD), but adds 90Hz refresh rate and HDR into the mix. Its a gorgeous screen, with stellar viewing angles and brilliant color reproduction, making 800p games somehow look higher resolution. Some may prefer the higher refresh rate and VRR in the Switch 2, which will allow the screen to quickly adapt to a fluctuating frame rate without tearing. The VRR difference is something you have to experience yourself, and its great to have in the Switch 2 as not many handhelds support it, save for the Lenovo Legion Go S and select others.Performance and battery lifeThere is sure to be more to come in terms of comparing performance between the Switch 2 and the Steam Deck. Hands-on time with the Switch 2 has been limited to a few games coming at launch, so you should expect more on how games available for both compare in terms of visuals and frame rate.We can make some comparisons based on specs. Both the Steam Deck models use a custom AMD APU (bundling the Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU) that plays a swath of PC games relatively smoothly at good-to-great visual quality with surprisingly good battery life. Not every game can take full advantage of the Steam Deck OLEDs 90Hz refresh rate, but thats not a claim Valve makes. Some AMDs FSR graphical upscaling technology is available in select games to reduce the render resolution of the image and upscale it using AI. In many cases, it makes supported games run better on Steam Deck, but with a major hit to visual quality.Photo by The VergeOn the other hand, I think Nintendos Switch 2 is more of a spec powerhouse than anyone expected. It uses a custom Nvidia processor, though almost no details about its power have been unveiled at the time of publishing. Nintendo is publicly targeting up to 120 frames per second in some games in handheld mode, with a 60 frames per second cap at 4K when docked, indicating that theres quite a bit of potential in the Switch 2. Nintendo Switch 2 hardware engineers claim the console utilizes DLSS and ray tracing key features offered by Nvidia graphics cards. Its unclear how these features will be used in titles across the board, and if there are any downsides to its implementation.Switching over to battery life, the Steam Deck has the Switch 2 beat, though for both handhelds its important to note that battery longevity varies wildly depending on the games you play. Balatro, for instance, is less taxing on hardware than Cyberpunk 2077. The Switch 2 has an expected battery life between 2 and 6.5 hours. Valves Steam Deck LCD (which has a 40Wh battery) can last between 2 and 8 hours, while the Steam Deck OLED, thanks to its more efficient display and jump from 40Wh to 50Wh, lasts between 3 and 12 hours.Storage, dock, and moreBy default, the Switch 2 contains 256GB of speedy UFS storage that presumably cannot be upgraded by the end user. However, it can be expanded upon with microSD cards but not just any will do. Its one of the first devices to support microSD Express, which are classified as PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSDs, but are just as tiny as other microSD cards. The console supports up to 2TB capacities, though weve only seen up to 1TB models hit shelves so far (more will certainly show up in time for the Switch 2s June 5th launch). The Steam Deck offers more versatility. For one, all models come with M.2 2230-sized SSDs that can be upgraded by opening the system. Doing so doesnt void the warranty, but youll want to be careful. Once inside, you can replace the SSD with something bigger. Its unclear currently whether the Steam Decks built-in SSD is faster or on a par with the Switch 2s internal storage. If you want to supplement the SSD with more user-friendly expandable storage, each Deck also supports UHS-1 microSD cards. Those are slower than the Switch 2s microSD Express cards, but they do the trick.Photo by Owen Grove / The VergeBoth handhelds can be used as hybrids, either in handheld mode or docked to a TV. Speaking of their handheld use case first, the Switch 2 includes a versatile kickstand, while the Steam Deck doesnt. Placing either on a dock grants you more ports to connect to the console. The Switch 2 dock, which comes with each console, includes an HDMI port, USB-C for power, plus an Ethernet port for wired internet. The Steam Deck docking station is a separate $79 accessory that includes more ports, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, three USB-A ports, Ethernet, and a USB-C port for power. The Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 have USB-C ports that send video out to your display. However, only the Switch 2 features a second USB-C port, located on its top, which can be used to plug in peripherals, such as a camera for GameChat, or numerous other accessories to be released in the future. This Switch 2s secondary USB-C port doesnt support video out. In the case of the Switch 2, its dock unlocks more power capabilities, whereas the Steam Decks dock doesnt increase its power. Games and softwareThe Steam Deck puts your Steam library at your fingertips. Youll be able to play most of them on the Steam Deck, but how each game performs including whether you can launch it at all, due to anti-cheat or other incompatibility reasons varies depending on the game. Valve attempts to make it easy to know whether a game will work well on Steam Deck. If its Verified, that means youll probably have a good experience. If its Playable, there might be some controller-based difficulties that might negatively impact and otherwise good experience. Unsupported games are simply that they either wont work if you boot them, or Valve hasnt tested them and doesnt know what kind of time youre in for. One defining feature of Steam is that the store hosts many sales, and Steam games can be legally acquired through third-party sites at big discounts. Games are often significantly more affordable by comparison to the Switch and other gaming consoles. The Switch 2 supports almost all original Switch games, though there are some titles that have issues. It supports them through a method somewhere in between a software emulator and hardware compatibility, according to Switch 2 developer Takuhiro Dohta. This sounds somewhat similar to Valves Proton, a compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on the Steam Decks fork of Linux.Image: NintendoContinuing on the Switch 2, there are Switch 2 Edition upgrades to select Switch titles that add flourishes allowed by the more powerful hardware, ranging from faster frames per second and higher resolution (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom), as well as other Switch 2-only features, like GameChat functionality (Super Mario Party: Jamboree - Switch 2 Edition), or mouse controls (Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Switch 2 Edition). Then, there will be Switch 2-exclusive games, like Mario Kart World, that can only be played on new hardware.Games aside, lets speak about the underlying software. The Switch 2, much like its predecessor, is focused almost exclusively on gaming. We dont yet know whether video streaming services will be available. However, on the Steam Deck, you have the option to switch from gaming to desktop mode, essentially turning it into a Linux desktop. From there, you can install apps of your choosing, run a browser, connect Google accounts to it to type documents anything that comes to mind.By the numbersSpecificationNintendo Switch 2Steam Deck OLEDSteam Deck LCDProcessorCustom Nvidia chipset (details TBD)Custom AMD APUCustom AMD APUScreen type7.9-inch LCD7.4-inch OLED7-inch LCDResolution (handheld)1,920 x 1080, up to 120Hz, VRR, HDR1,280 x 800, up to 90Hz, HDR1,280 x 800, up to 60HzResolution (docked)3,840 x 2,160 at 60Hz, or 1440p/1080p at up to 120Hz7680 x 4320 at 60Hz, or 3840 x 2160 at 120Hz7680 x 4320 at 60Hz, or 3840 x 2160 at 120HzHDR10 support?YesNoNoInternal storage256GB512GB256GBExpandable storagemicroSD Express (up to 2TB)microSD (up to 2TB)microSD (up to 2TB)SensorsAccelerometer / gyroscope, mouse / brightness (in console)Accelerometer / gyroscope / ambient light sensorAccelerometer / gyroscope / ambient light sensorPorts (handheld)2x USB-C / 3.5mmUSB-C / 3.5mmUSB-C / 3.5mmPorts (dock)2x USB-C / HDMI / ethernet3x USB 2.0 / 2x USB-A / USB-C (power adapter) / HDMI / DisplayPort / Ethernet (dock not included)3x USB 2.0 / 2x USB-A / USB-C (power adapter) / HDMI / DisplayPort / Ethernet (dock not included)Wireless connectivityWi-Fi 6 / Bluetooth / NFCWi-Fi 6E / Bluetooth 5.3Dual-band Wi-Fi / Bluetooth 5Wired connectivityEthernet (docked mode)Ethernet via optional dockEthernet via optional dockBuilt-in mic?YesYesYesSpeakersStereo speakersStereo speakersStereo speakersBattery capacity5,220mAh lithium-ion50Wh battery40Wh batteryBattery life (est.)2 to 6.5 hours3 to 12 hours2 to 8 hoursCharging timeAbout 3 hours 30 minutesNot advertisedNot advertisedGame card slotSwitch 2 and Switch cartridgesN/A, uses microSD card (plus internal SSD)N/A, uses microSD card (plus internal SSD)Weight (grams)399.16g (or 535.24g with Joy-Con 2 controllers attached)640 grams669 gramsDimensions4.5 x 10.7 x .55 inches4.6 x 11.7 x 1.92 inches4.6 x 11.7 x 1.92 inchesStarting price$449.99$549.99$399.99AvailableJune 5th, 2025NowNowSee More:

  • Nintendos Switch 2 era comes at a price
    www.theverge.com
Just about everything with the Nintendo Switch 2 is more expensive than the original Switch. Its perhaps not unexpected that the console itself costs more money than the first Switch. That device launched more than eight years ago, after all. But following yesterdays big Switch 2 Direct, there has been a lot of sticker shock as people have seen just how much Nintendo is charging for the console and its games, including multiple titles with a price tag of just under $80. (And some of those games are just improved versions of years-old Switch titles.)Based on hands-on reports from my colleagues, the Switch 2 seems like another excellent device, with upgrades like an improved Nvidia processor and a bigger screen with support for HDR and 120fps framerates. Nintendo games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza seem like theyre shaping up well, too.But if youre looking to buy a Switch 2 for yourself pre-orders in the US start on April 9th youre going to have to pay up. (And, depending on the impact of President Trumps newly-announced tariffs, the Switch 2 could cost even more.)Here are some comparisons of console, accessory, and game costs betwee …Read the full story at The Verge.

  • Genki has a magnetic battery for the Switch 2 and a better Joy-Con charging dock
    www.theverge.com
With every new portable console comes a mountain of new third-party accessories. Weve already seen Horis Piranha Plant alternative to the Switch 2s USB-C camera, but Genki has announced a larger lineup of accessories designed to help protect the portable console while youre playing away from home, plus some clever ways to keep it and its Joy-Con controllers charged. The Joy-Station can charge four Joy-Cons simultaneously and turn them into two standalone controllers. Image: GenkiThe $49.99 Genki Joy-Station looks like a sleek way to avoid the annoying juggling act of keeping more than two Joy-Cons charged, with some additional, well thought-out functionality. The Joy-Cons attach to two delta-shaped grips turning each pair into standalone controllers. Two Joy-Cons can be simultaneously charged using a USB-C cable while attached to the grips useful for those times when you want to play and the Joy-Cons are nearly dead but they also charge when the grips are reattached to the charging base. The Energy Pack includes a small screen displaying temperature, charging speeds, and the remaining charge level. Image: GenkiThanks in part to a larger screen, the Switch 2s battery life is estimated to be between two and 6.5 hours per charge. You can extend that using Genkis $69.99 Energy Pack which is designed to conveniently magnetically attach to the back of the console and charge it at up to 30W speeds. The 10,000mAh Energy Pack is Qi2 compatible so you can also use it to wirelessly charge your phone, but the Switch 2 isnt, so the battery instead connects to the consoles top USB-C port using a short included cable. You can enhance your Grip on the Switch 2 using Genkis Attack Vector shell. Image: GenkiFor gamers wanting added protection while theyre playing the Switch 2, Genkis Attack Vector is a $49.99 three-piece dock-compatible protective shell that can be upgraded with a screen cover for an extra $10. Its most compelling feature is that it comes with three different sizes of sweat-resistant grips including a slim option designed for travel and a chunky option for maximum grip. The Joy-Cons remain easily removable while using the Force Field 2 shell. Image: GenkiThe $29.99 (or $39.99 with an optional screen cover) Force Field 2 shell is a cheaper alternative to the Attack Vector featuring a swing open design so you can detach and reattach the Switch 2s Joy-Cons without having to fully remove it. Its also dock-compatible, and allows for full use of the Switch 2s folding stand. If youre simply looking for a way to keep the Switch 2 safe from dirt and scratches while its stuffed in a bag, Genkis $42.99 Sleeper Case features a hidden zipper and a soft wool finish inside and out wrapped around a sturdy shell the company describes as both crushproof and virtually indestructible.Genki has also introduced a $19.99 Switch 2 screen protector called the Aegis Shield, and the Mimic Chest: a $19.99 plastic case sold in three-packs that each hold 12 game cartridges. All of the accessories are available for preorder now and expected to ship sometime in May or June 2025. If you want them all, Genki also sells the collection as a bundle with either the Force Field 2 shell for $184.99 or the Attack Vector for $199.99.See More:

  • Trumps tariffs are a debacle of epic proportions for the auto industry
    www.theverge.com
Liberation Day has arrived. Get ready to be liberated from affordable vehicle prices. As promised, President Donald Trumps 25 percent tariffs for imported vehicles went into effect Thursday, sending the auto industry into full panic mode. Some analysts are predicting a $5,000 to $10,000 price hike on new cars out of the gate, while others are still struggling to wrap their heads around the logic of Trumps auto tariffs. It was a nuclear-level threat for the already unsettled auto industry, with little relief in sight. Trumps argument is relatively straightforward, if nonsensical: Dont like the tariffs? Just buy an American-made car. The only problem is that there is no such thing. Even vehicles made in the US rely on a complex supply chain that runs across borders and through multiple nations. The average car contains roughly 30,000 individual parts. Even cars produced domestically obtain 4050 percent of their parts from abroad, according to Dan Ives, the global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, a financial services firm. The tariffs are a debacle of epic proportions for the auto industry and US consumers as the concept of a US made car with all US parts is a fairy tale fictional narrative, Ives wrote in a note to clients on Thursday. The more people we speak with from the auto industry around the world it is becoming crystal clear this tariff/US policy will cause pure chaos to the global auto industry and will raise the prices of a typical car to a US consumer by $5k to $10k out of the gates. It is becoming crystal clear this tariff/US policy will cause pure chaos to the global auto industryOther firms were predicting an even higher price increase as the new tariffs started to go into effect. Anderson Economic Group concluded that the tariffs could boost manufacturing costs by $4,000 to more than $10,000 per car, depending on the vehicle model. Battery-electric crossover SUVs could see the biggest spike of $12,000.The effect could be even more pronounced at the lower end of the market, with many of the most affordable vehicles from GM, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai produced outside the US. Affordability is already a huge problem for car buyers, with average transactions for new cars clocking in at $48,118 in January, according to market researcher Edmunds. There are only 27 vehicles available under $30,000 four of which have already been discontinued, including the Chevy Malibu and Nissan Versa. Many of these models are sourced from Mexico, Japan, and South Korea. Last year, these models made up 13 percent of all vehicles sold in the US. Slapping tariffs on these vehicles as they arrive in the US would drastically change the dynamics, pushing sticker prices up by an average of $5,300, according to Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive. This is difficult news for an industry already staring down an affordability problem, Keating added in a statement. For decades, car ownership has been a hallmark of the American dream. We built our communities around car ownership, squeezing out transit, and shrinking pedestrian spaces to make way for bigger and bigger vehicles. For most people in the US, owning a car isnt an option; its a necessity to participate in daily life. This is difficult news for an industry already staring down an affordability problem.Consumers were already facing elevated costs when financing new vehicles before the tariffs hit. One in 5 new car buyers are taking on seven-year loans to finance a new car purchase, in a sign of increasing financial stress, Edmunds says. And an increasing number of people with car loans owe more than their vehicle is worth. Even with rates holding relatively flat, the continued reliance on extended terms and high monthly payments reveals how challenging car buying remains, says Jessica Caldwell, head of insights at Edmunds. And now, with auto tariffs officially taking effect today, theres a risk that they will add fuel to the fire triggering a disruption that could push vehicles even further out of reach for many shoppers. The Trump administration is considering other methods of relief for car buyers. The White House said it is calling for tax breaks to incentivize purchases of US-made vehicles and pursuing deregulation to lower industrywide costs. But the outcome is uncertain. With prices expected to surge, many people who had been considering a car purchase are crowding into dealerships, trying to take advantage of pre-tariff prices. Consumer experts advise against panic shopping, but of course, most people arent thinking rationally as they watch the news with growing anxiety. It never pays to rush out and make a rash decision that you might regret, says Jake Fisher, senior director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center. Even if the tariffs are here to stay, in a short time, the value of your trade-in will increase too.It never pays to rush out and make a rash decision that you might regret. Some automakers are taking advantage of elevated inventories the total number of new and used vehicles that dealers have for sale to offer short-term incentives to panicked shoppers. Ford is offering employee discounts on most models, including the Mustang Mach-E and Maverick, both of which are built in Mexico, to all shoppers through June 2nd, Reuters reports. Ford had more than four months of inventory in February, above the industry average of nearly three months, according to Cox.Hyundais response was to announce a $21 billion investment in the US to stave off the effect of the tariffs. And others are taking a more drastic approach. Stellantis said today it was temporarily laying off 900 workers at five of its US factories and pausing production at assembly plants in Canada and Mexico. Even Tesla, which is run by billionaire best buddy Elon Musk, is exposed to these new tariffs. The company assembles its vehicles in the US, but 2025 percent of its parts are sourced from Mexico, according to a list of car part origins published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The tariffs will likely lead to more automakers trying to negotiate deals or exemptions with the administration. And ultimately, this is probably what Trump wants: to be the most important person in the room, at the center of the chaos he helped create. See More:
