Third VolumeThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return for season 3 at Prime Video, and a big time jump is happeningDark days ahead for both Middle-earth and the anti-woke crowd.Image credit: Prime Video News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power did well enough after convincing most critics last year with its second season, but the lack of post-finale updates on Amazon's big fantasy bet for TV, which has been reported to be ridiculously expensive when compared to other shows, had cast a shadow of doubt over its survival. Now, fans can rest easy. The five-season story arc that's been discussed in the past by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay is said to end with Sauron's defeat at the slopes of Mount Doom. You know, before he became a big spooky flaming eye. Of course, there's still a ways to go, with war in Middle-earth only beginning to heat up by the time season 2 fades to black. Needless to say, cancelling the show at this point and after viewership ratings that, while below season 1's, remain among Prime Video's best would've caused a ruckus online. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It's now been confirmed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that The Rings of Power will return for a third season which will begin shooting this spring at Shepperton Studios in the UK. This signals a slightly quicker pace after season 2 finished airing when compared to season 1, with Payne, McKay, and their writers' room likely putting the finishing touches on the scripts now. A release during the second half of 2026 seems almost assured. Moreover, THR has revealed the show is jumping forward in time, likely to cut out some fluff and get quicker to the big story and character beats at a time when war has spread wider and the situation in Middle-earth is dire. Here's what the press release says: "Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last."International Emmy award nominee Charlotte Brndstrm (Shōgun) is returning to direct season 3 episodes alongside Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time). They're joined by Stefan Schwartz (The Boys). Renowned composer Bear McCreary is expected to continue on board after delivering two standout and hefty original soundtracks for the show so far.

Virtual Void ScreamsIs your life missing an endless stream of GTA 6 waffle? Rockstar's set up an official Discord that already has an entire channel for wondering "Will GTA 6 introduce Sex 2"Finally, a place where an honest person can ask important questions like "do yall think we'll have to manually breathe on gta6?"Image credit: Rockstar Games News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 13, 2025 If there's one thing we've all loved about the wait for GTA 6 to arrive with all the fanfare of an intergalactic invasion signaled by the blowing of a glow-in-the-dark trumpet the size of the Milky Way, it's been the endless speculation and chatter that's filled the gaps between little snippets of info.To be fair, we've had a bit of fun with it ourselves, but we've got nothing on a new place you can go to have the words 'GTA 6!?!' blasted into your eyeballs like a hose connected to a bottle of freshly-shaken coke. It's the GTA 6 channel on the official Discord server Rockstar Games has just set up and announced midway through its latest Newswire post, and it's - to put it simply - a trip.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "Whether youre coordinating with a Heist crew, organizing a car meet, or putting a team together to take advantage of this weeks Casino Story Mission bonuses, theres no better place to connect with like-minded players than on the newly launched official Rockstar Games Discord," Rockstar wrote of the server's purpose, "Join to keep up with the latest in Rockstar Games news, and use the LFG forums to fill out the ranks of your Association on the platform of your choice."Naturally, in addition to that, the server - which already has just over 140,000 members - is home to an entire channel dedicated to GTA 6 discussion. It currently contains a malestrom of verbal diarrhea that's basically a concentrated form of the likes of the GTA 6 subreddit, and the fifty million Twitter and Facebook comments about GTA 6 that are posted every day. Frankly, it's glorious to behold."Will GTA 6 introduce Sex 2" read one of the first posts I spotted in it, which has since been whisked off into oblivion, as the channel gets a new post literally every 20 seconds or so. So you can get the flavour, here's a 'conversation' that just happened over the past minute:One user: GTA 7 before GTA 6Someone else: ValentinesAnother user: Ne zna ni onSomeone different: Nah this community crazy aslYet another user: BraindeadSomeone that's not the previous five: RICK GRIMESAnother user yet again: gta 6 2026 plzSomeone entirely new: 6Yep, not just a washing machine of words at all.Hey, at least some fans are using the waiting time til fall constructively, doing stuff like having a crack at building GTA 6's map in GTA 5.

  • Armie Hammer is becoming The Dark Knight for Uwe Boll, and no, that doesn't mean the Batman IP is going down the toilet again

Vigilante JusticeArmie Hammer is becoming The Dark Knight for Uwe Boll, and no, that doesn't mean the Batman IP is going down the toilet againI mean, it's already bad out there for the fallen actor.Image credit: Warner Bros. Pictures News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 You might still remember the whole thing that went down with once-acclaimed actor Armie Hammer a few years ago, but that didn't go anywhere in the end. Regardless, the actor's public image and reputation in the Hollywood circles was damaged, and after some time away from the cameras, he's returning to the screen under Uwe Boll's lens with The Dark Knight. No, James Gunn's DC Studios hasn't gone chaotic (yet) and hired one of the modern masters of poopy filmmaking to make his own take on the Caped Crusader, but his new movie is about a vigilante regardless. The story follows Sanders (Hammer), "a man who takes justice into his own hands as he sets out to hunt down criminals." After some time, an Interpol officer (Costas Mandylor) sets his sights on him, and you already know where things go next.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Variety exclusively revealed the details for The Dark Knight on February 12, indicating the movie is currently shooting in Zagreb, Croatia. For Mandylor, this is a second run with Uwe Boll, who's currently also deep into post-production of his previous feature, Run. That one is currently looking for a distributor in the United States.Despite a crushing number of video game-related misfires (on the big and small screens, to be fair), Boll is also reportedly working with relatively unknown developer Polygon Art "to develop a video game based on the movie." If anything, he's confident about what he's cooking and open to have fun with it.Mind you, Boll's career isn't wall-to-wall garbage, and I've stated in the past his completely bonkers Postal adaptation had a few things going for it. Furthermore, he's found relative success away from video game adaptations, with his Rampage movie series and Assault on Wall Street even landing somewhat 'positive' reviews. He ain't slowing down anytime soon, that's for sure, and it'll be interesting to see whether some of that momentum also applies to Hammer's currently deceased acting career. Funnily enough, the actor was at some point suggested as a pretty good option for the role of Bruce Wayne aka Batman, so this outcome feels like a joke that's arriving with delay.

  • Blade and Soul NEO will not be launching on Steam, will be sticking to NCSoft's own platform Purple

PurpleBlade and Soul NEO will not be launching on Steam, will be sticking to NCSoft's own platform PurpleHow big of an impact will this decision have on new player engagement? Time will tell!Image credit: NCSoft Article by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Blade & Soul Neo is a re-release of NCSoft's action MMO, bringing the world back to its original state with a healthy number of quality of life changes and significant gameplay additions to make the whole experience a bit smoother. It's a cool idea, perhaps inspired somewhat by Blizzard's World of Warcraft: Classic, and has certainly convinced me to jump back on board and give the game a try later this month. However, despite what appears to be a grand opportunity to get as many new folks into Blade & Soul as possible, the game will not be launching on Steam. Instead, the game will solely be available on NCSoft's own platform: Purple. This was revealed during a press preview and Q&A held last week, in which NC America's Andrew Long (senior producer) and Andrew Gant (community manager) provided some insight into the game and its goals. The following answers were provided in an interview shortly after that preview. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. VG247: Who is your target audience here?Long: "We want to grab people who maybe played Blade & Soul at launch, who maybe left over the past nine years. So we want to target those users, we have a large user pool too! We also want to target new audiences! We want to get people who've heard about Blade & Soul, but maybve don't know what it is, and want to explore it now. So we want to make sure both Blade & Soul live and Neo are supported, but with Neo tap into lapsed users, new users, anyone who wants to enjoy our product."VG247: Are you concerned at all that this game launching solely on Purple to begin with will hamper the game's ability to reach new or lapsed players?Long: "I think there are unique challenges to having your own launcher. Steam is a juggernaught in the industry, and when we do, we'll reach out over platforms for expansion, areas to grow. So, it's something we're aware of, but we're confident in our launch and plan on Purple."VG247: Would you say that outreach to new audiences is one of the primary challenges with having your own launcher?Long: "Yeah I would say, the product is going to be what's going to draw those users in. They're going to want to play Blade & Soul, they check where it is, they find out it's on Purple. So what is Purple? There is going to have to be an education space there, on how do I make an account, things like that. So there's that one step they're going to have to do, and that can be challenging. But we're ready, we're ready to make as manner introductions into what Purple is, how to use it, and all the cool features on Purple! There are a lot of cool features on Purple that may not be on Steam." Neo is a stunner to be fair, with old zones visually refreshed. | Image credit: NCSoftVG247: I have one final question on Purple. NCSoft launched Throne and Liberty on Steam, but isn't doing it here. I'm curious why there's a difference in strategy between the two games. Obviously, both games would want as many players as possible to jump on board, you guys will have worked hard on Blade & Soul Neo. So why choose just Purple for this?At this point, Douglass Perry (senior director of public relations at NC America) spoke up to provide some additional context to the decision.Perry: "Easy answer. Throne and Liberty is published by Amazon, it's not an NC America game, so it's a different publisher. This publishing team is only a year and a half old, we have a staff of 30-35 people. We're really establishing ourselves as a new publisher. Our mandate from NCSoft is to use the Purple launcher, and as we progress through this year and the next, we'll be looking at all the different platforms we can."VG247: Other Andrew! How do you anticipate the audience will split in Neo between totally new players, and players of Blade & Soul live? Do you think it'll be its own distinct audience, or will it be a mix of players jumping into both games at once? New features, like infinite wind walking, may tempt long time fans over. | Image credit: NCSoftGant: "That's a really good question. I've been blown away by our own community in our Discord and our live player base - they're really passionate. They're excited about Neo, they're still eager to play Live, but will try out Neo for sure. I can't predict whether they'll leave Live behind as they're still so passionate, but of course they're going to try Neo and make their own decision on what version is right for them. The two versions are wildly different, so that's a question that'll be answered shortly.""If we look at the community, a lot of the hype has been from returning users joining our Discord, who maybe tried Blade & Soul back when it launched, have all of these great memories, and they're back to see what this new game is all about. But also, it's been interesting to see a lot of new players who have no idea what Blade & Soul is. So we have a lot of potential with people who missed it [...] There are new generations that have missed it, they weren't here for the beginning of the MMO rise, so it's been important for us to realize there's a massive market for new players as well.""Also, if I may add to the Purple thing, we've been using Purple for a year plus, all three of our games and a mobile game we have all exist on Purple. So it's kind of an old hat for us, but it's getting new features that we're excited to show to a new audience".It's an interesting debate, whether or not to keep your own games on a dedicated launcher to create a hub for fans of NCSoft, while taking into account the potential loss of players that decision may bring. It's especially interesting that Throne and Liberty's PC release and it's initial peak of 333,000 players doesn't appear to have shifted NCSoft's own philosophy when it comes to other MMO releases. That's an audience that Amazon clearly wanted to tap into with its involvement in the release, but given that figure has dropped siginificantly since then to a steady 30-ish thousand concurrent, perhaps there's merit to building your own platform. Would those dedicated Throne and Liberty fans be any less eager if they had to boot up Purple? Something to think about.Nevertheless, Blade & Soul Neo is launching on Purple on February 25. It's not touched on in this interview too much, but the game does really seem like a great jumping on point for those unfamiliar. We'll have another interview feature on Blade & Soul Neo out tomorrow, so keep an eye out if you want to read more about the release.

  • HBO's The Last of Us is "likely" getting four seasons to properly adapt all the happy events from Part II, but plans aren't finished yet

Extended DramaHBO's The Last of Us is "likely" getting four seasons to properly adapt all the happy events from Part II, but plans aren't finished yetNo gut punch left behind.Image credit: HBO News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 HBO's The Last of Us is rapidly approaching its second season, set to arrive in April, and it sure as hell ain't looking like a happy time. Those who have played The Last of Us: Part II know it's a long video game full of twists and gut punches, so it comes as no surprise to hear that the current plan is to make at least two more seasons after this one.The post-apocalyptic saga became much bigger and deeper with the release of the second game in 2020, and season 2 of the show is set to follow the same path after its commitment to fidelity, all while expanding on certain fronts and making a few intelligent tweaks, paid off big time with casual viewers and longtime fans alike. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "We don't have a complete or final plan, but I think it's looking like four seasons. I wouldn't want to confirm that, but it's looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we're done," current HBO drama chief Francesca Orci said (via Deadline).Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, who jointly created and have been shepherding the HBO series, teased the same last year. "We don't think that we're going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we're taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too," Mazin explained.Fans of the games will also be well aware of how the harsh world of The Last of Us is quickly expanded as new factions and several new characters are introduced. While we may not properly meet all of them this season, Orci made sure to highlight how that's a large part of what makes season 2 so interesting: "There's certain elements in terms of the various factions that are competing for survival that reveal themselves as a really intriguing survivalist group, and I think they just have a quality to them that feels distinct in how they present it."We're still waiting for a definitive release date for The Last of Us season 2, but that could change any day now with a proper full trailer that elaborates a bit on the plot and the new relationship dynamics while teasing a bunch of the new threats for the viewers that are going in blind. For TLOU as a franchise, more seasons of HBO's hit series may be the only new addition for what's left of the decade, as Naughty Dog's expansive multiplayer take on the IP was canned in late 2023 and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will keep the studio busy for the foreseeable.

  • Avowed review: the next great cult classic
    www.vg247.com
PILLAR OF FIREAvowed review: the next great cult classicAvowed is unlikely to be marked as a trailblazer, but everything it sets out to do it accomplishes with style and confidence. I expect to many it'll be regarded as a cult classic in years to come. Review by Alex Donaldson Assistant Editor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Role-playing games come in all shapes and sizes, but something I really rather appreciate is when a game in the genre doesnt sweat the gritty stuff. I do respect and enjoy when a game really goes for crafting a world experience, I admit - but sometimes, I just want my RPG fix to come in the form of a truly video gamey video game. Avowed is that - still immersive, but gleefully unashamed of doing whatever it can to shine a light on mechanics first to deliver a fun and memorable world to noodle around in.In a sense, this months release of Avowed thereby pitches it as an interesting antithesis to the recently released and also-excellent Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. These two games represent the two extremes of the western-made RPG lineage - the grit of a real feeling world and this. More joyful, more approachable. Theres serious themes to be found, but at the same time, its just a bloody good romp. I expect this will inspire no small degree of critic and audience division. Some will doubtless find Avowed to be a little bit unserious. But if you embrace what it is presenting, its a total joy. Pretty early on in my playthrough I began to sense a future cult classic, the sort of game that becomes certain players muse, the sort of game that a small subset of people will never shut up about. In a sense, that shouldnt surprise. This is an Obsidian game, and this studio has made rather a lot of games like that. I would kill a man for Alpha Protocol. But lets be clear on something else: this is a tightly-wound, smartly-scoped, polished, balanced game. Theres little in the way of jank here.Alright then, you say. Its good. But what is it? A first glance at a character meandering around a town in first-person will give impressions of an Elder Scrolls style open world RPG. Its a little bit of that, sure, though its also quite deliberately scoped as something a little different - and smaller - than that. Theres not the crazy world persistence of every object being movable or the like, and rather than one huge open world the setting of The Living Lands is carefully segmented into several modestly-specced open zones you freely travel between via a world map, vaguely bringing to mind the world structure of Dragon Age Inquisition. In role-playing terms, its a generous full-fat experience. Avowed is a spin-off of Pillars of Eternity, which is a capital C CRPG - that is to say, a full-on dungeons and dragons-like experience. Youve got the familiar six stats to pump points into on level up, plus three different categories of abilities divided into traditional character classes (Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard). Despite the class system on show with skills, theres no hard class divisions - you choose your starting skills, but you can equip everything and buy any skill you like as you progress. This all leads to a delightfully squishy and flexible approach to character development that I feel engenders exciting role-playing and build construction. I fell in love with the guns of Avowed - great big blunderbuss-style guns that take an age to reload. Theres a primary hand/off hand system, so I settled on a heaving pistol in my right hand and a grimoire in my left. Grimoires allow the casting of magic spells without investing ability points into them, but exactly what spells you have access to are of course limited by the book.Over the course of the game my character began to trend towards a hybrid battlefield control build. I became deeply attached to a specific gun which had some perks I loved, plus a book that gave me spells that could freeze a group of enemies in place with ice and then bounce devastating chained lightning between them. Id do this, then strafe away, firing powered-up shots with my gun. What started out as me picking Ranger at the onset of the game became something very different indeed. If things got dicey, I had backup plans. Your companions, of which two can join you at any given time, have a handful of abilities you can trigger - so I made sure they had skills which helped to draw aggro off me. And if things got really bad, Id drop back to my secondary weapon set - a trusty spear and shield combo. Avowed has a one-click switch between primary and secondary weapon sets in combat, and even has stats and skills that are built to make the switching faster. Obsidians designers knew that some people would make switching weapon multiple times per encounter the centerpiece of their playstyle - and so the flexibility to lean into that system is there. You'll battle against bandits, soldiers, wildlife, lora, fauna, and a variety of species of bear. | Image credit: Obsidian EntertainmentAdd in a low barrier to entry for refunding skill points and respecing your character, and youve got all the makings of a role-playing experience with a wonderful degree of experimentation at its heart. Combine that with the fact that this is generally good-feeling, crunchy-enough action combat for a game that is ultimately driven by numbers, and the point is this: I never got tired of fighting. Theres a whippet-fast energy to combat in this game at its best, where managing the enemies, cooldowns, and your own attributes becomes frenetic and fun. The best sort of combat encounter in Avowed could be summed up as organized chaos, which I love.My approach quickly morphed into aiming to fully explore each new area and attempt to exhaust side quests before even attempting to advance the main narrative. Hunts, which I usually initially enjoy but usually eventually tire of, became and remained an absolute priority. My love of the combat, systems, and RPG mechanics arguably drove the rest of my enjoyment of the game - and I dare say ones opinion of these systems will likely truly define your experience with Avowed.Theres plenty to love here if youre less interested in blasting and casting, though. All I can really say is this - its an Obsidian game, and a good one. This is a studio that knows its way around a story with consequences - and real ones. These guys made Fallout New Vegas, lest we forget. I genuinely agonized over a few choices - which is how it should be.At the start of the game youll pick a character role which will help to frame your place in the world and add new dialogue options. Theres also plenty of speech checks based on your character stat choices. Should you wish, there is plenty of opportunity to through intimidation, compassion, or completionism deescalate tense encounters and solve issues without firing a shot, uttering a spell, or drawing a blade. In a game that trades so heavily on the strength of its combat, this is in fact a little bit brave! The world features more typically medieval locales and some heavy fantasy swings for the fecnes. | Image credit: Microsoft/Obsidian EntertainmentWell-written characters verbally spar and charming companions have fierce and often conflicting opinions on matters. Your character often faces preconceptions and judgement over their status as a Godlike - a fact visible to all. Some will regard you as a savior; others an abomination. Its an interesting story beat, and you have some decent latitude in terms of how you navigate peoples various responses to you.The world itself can feel a touch static when youre meandering through it compared to some rivals. You cant slaughter a town of innocents or get in trouble with the guards. Tossing a grenade in town will just result in it harmlessly going off. NPCs dont have much reaction to you that isnt part of a specific dialogue or quest. This feels cheap, but it also is absolutely in keeping with the stall the game sets out early on: this isnt that sort of RPG. I didnt feel short-changed by this, because narratively theres a hell of a lot going on and some great choice-and-reaction stuff. When youre in a conversation Avoweds Pillars lineage stands tall - it feels more like a slower-paced tactical, story-driven RPG than it does a console-first action combat extravaganza. In fact, probably my only scope-related complaints rest on the companions. Theyre good, charming folk - but I wish there were a little more to do with them beyond conversations at camp - and I wish their ambient dialogue werent so reactive. Crouch for a second, even mid-combat, and someone might go, be quiet as a mouse! because, yep, crouching is often used for stealth. But when my finger brushes C while trying to jump in the middle of an explosive combat encounter were not stealthing, are we, mate? While Im nitpicking, food is key for buffs and health restoration - but the cooking system related to food feels fairly half-baked, if youll excuse the pun, and is far too divorced from RPG systems for my liking - a cooking-related skill wouldve been neat to see.But I digress. Back to what I like: I also think its all rather striking looking. This is a gorgeous world, and though a joined-up approach is sacrificed in favor of the smattering of open zones, the advantage here is that each biome can feel unique. Dawnshore is, I think, one of the strongest first zone, dip-your-toe-in zones Ive experienced in a game of this type. It teaches you the rhythms of picking up quests, of solving cute environmental puzzles with elemental magic, of combat, and of both directed treasure hunt quests and unguided listening for the subtle twinkling noise in the background that indicates that theres a chest of valuable loot nearby. The instincts trained here stick with you for the rest of the game. Charming companions make for not just buddies, but vital combat crutches as well. | Image credit: Obsidian EntertainmentUltimately, Dawnshore will suck you in, but its also gloriously a little bit run-of-the-mill - which means surprises can be saved for more hair-raising areas later. This comes both in story terms, where you travel from more prosperous areas to places shattered by the forces of nature herself - but also in striking visual design and an incredible level of visual polish, especially on a higher-end PC (though the spec requirements are mercifully modest, as this is a game that still needs to run well on Xbox Series S).If I can level a criticism at Avowed, its arguably that it simply is very classic. Theres no reinvention of the wheel here. It brings to mind and was evocative of a similar warmth of some of my favorite role-playing games of eras gone by. Noodling around the open world sort of gave me that fuzzy feeling I most keenly associate with Oblivion - but in a streamlined package. The most revolutionary thing on offer, in a sense, is how the lore and world view of Pillars of Eternity is reinterpreted for this new type of game. These are wildly different products, but they feel utterly cohesive at their heart. In that sense, Avowed is perfect proof of a great proof in all game design and in the execution of all art: you sometimes dont need to pitch a revolution. Instead, you just need to have something to say, and then use the established tools and concepts to say it well. Thats what Avowed is: strong storytelling, great combat, lovely visuals, and utterly charming. Its not going to light everyones hair on fire, but thats fine - because I know for a certain subset of people - refined people of taste, if you ask me - Avowed will enjoy cult classic status. It doesnt necessarily push the envelope, but nor does it need to. Its exactly what it needs to be.

Good question, and one of Dale's viewers asked it during his most recent playing session, specifically broaching the topic of romance options. "Who am I planning on romancing? After a relatively silent 2024, writer-director Takashi Yamazaki has now confirmed he's hard at work on pre-production for the movie and has also shared his thoughts on the matter of AI.Toho's refreshed big-screen efforts around the Godzilla franchise seem to be ramping up, all while its collaboration with Legendary Pictures leads into Monarch season 2 plus the third Godzilla x Kong event movie, set to be released in March 2027. Elsewhere, the most famous kaiju of all time has shown up even in off-beat video games like Dave the Diver. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Via Variety, we've learned about Yamazaki's new comments at the Visual Effects Society Awards. There, he confirmed he's currently working on the screenplay as well as the first storyboards for the next Godzilla movie. Moreover, he explained the budget he and his team are anticipating getting from Toho is expected to be higher than $15 million after Godzilla Minus One earned over $113 million globally just with its theatrical run and before making a splash on streaming services like Netflix. Of course, taking home an Oscar for Best VFX also helps Yamazaki's case.On the matter of AI being integrated into the VFX pipeline, he acknowledged its potential (in fact, it's already been crucial to help figure out and deliver simulations for years), but is also worried about losing "what humans can" generate. With generative AI poisoning the entire AI well, this is a discussion that's been hard to keep track of and navigate, which is why Yamazaki plans to keep things traditional while the new uses of AI are figured out and regulated: "Right now, its not in any of our pipelines because of that reason, but the speed at which AI evolves is just so immense that where it goes from here remains to be seen."He also added, quite diplomatically, that he's a bit of an old-school filmmaker who's "still shooting on film" and likes "to use miniatures," so don't expect him to embrace AI, good or not, anytime soon (if at all): "I'm probably going to be one of the later ones, because I do like working with older technology and techniques."

Under FireThe first Captain America: Brave New World reviews are here, and it's one of the lowest-rated MCU entries so farExtensive reshoots and rewrites seem to be the least of its problems.Image credit: Marvel Studios News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 As Captain America: Brave New World prepares to land this weekend to quite solid box office projections, critics and influencers aren't too happy with Marvel Studios' latest. The first batch of reviews is plenty divisive, and so far, Anthony Mackie's big-screen debut as the new Captain America is among the MCU's lowest-rated entries with 52% right now.To put things into perspective: 2023's dreadful Secret Invasion limited series ranks above it on Rotten Tomatoes with 53% (just 1% more at the time of writing), and below it we find only Eternals (47%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (46%). Not looking too good there, folks. As always: RT's percentages represent the amount of critics that gave a movie a pass/thumbs-up and aren't an actual average score. Metacritic takes care of that, and, uh, it's sitting at 43 so far based on 41 reviews. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. This disappointing (but somewhat predictable) outcome won't be deterring MCU loyalists from watching the penultimate Phase 5 movie in cinemas, mind you, but it could have an effect on its legs past the opening weekend. In late 2023, The Marvels had the franchise's lowest-ever box office debut, but some diehards were hoping for a prolonged presence at the box office. Instead, the middling-to-negative reception translated into the sequel being blipped out of existence quite soon.So far, critics are underlining a lack of narrative focus and the fact this entry largely feels like a straight sequel to 2008's The Incredible Hulk (really) that happens to feature Sam Wilson as the leading man, all while shoehorning loose plot threads such as the massive Celestial sticking out of Earth after the events of 2021's already-forgotten Eternals adaptation. Of course, rushed CGI and jumpy editing are said to be present too, but it appears the movie's problems run deeper than that. Needless to say, it sounds like it doesn't have a whole lot to actually say about the politics it toys with nor the world we live in.Last year, Deadpool & Wolverine seemingly proved not only that there was plenty of juice left in the Marvel brand, but also that Marvel Studios could push forward with R-rated movies without fearing a box office slump. In fact, the threequel was the best-performing MCU release since 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, many theorised the over-one-billion uptick could be tied to the 'solo' power of the two leading characters versus a sudden surge of interest in the universe after a handful of misfires. Image credit: Marvel StudiosCaptain America: Brave New World's numbers partially support this theory (Captain America and Harrison Ford as Red Hulk are more interesting to the casual viewer than Ant-Man or The Marvels), as the blockbuster could 'make it out alive' with a decent hold into its second and third weekends, especially with the current international projections looking solid too. However, it's hard to see it even nearing the $800 million mark, let alone a hefty $1 billion haul. With Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps' previews sparking more hype than any recent movies (besides the third Deadpool) from the studio, things could be looking up for the franchise ahead of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, but Captain America 4 surely isn't a star-spangled win. What about you? Will you be watching Captain America: Brave New World in theaters this weekend, or are you waiting for the Disney+ release?

  • The Nameless King and older Souls bosses will show up in Elden Ring Nightreign for exactly the reasons you think
    www.vg247.com
Rogue Nameless KingThe Nameless King and older Souls bosses will show up in Elden Ring Nightreign for exactly the reasons you thinkYour first guess about the reason why you're going to be fighting classic Souls games bosses in Elden Ring Nightreign is probably the correct one.Image credit: FromSoftware News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Elden Ring Nightreign is quickly becoming one of the years most anticipated games, and with good reason. But it also represents an entirely new type of game for developer FromSoftware, one that freed it up to try things some would consider sacrilege.Case in point, all the classic Souls bosses fans have spotted in various Nightreign trailers. These are just some of the bosses youll be going up against in the game, of course, but why not just limit the pool to bosses from Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree? To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The answer, somewhat disappointingly, has nothing to do with lore and story. Elden Ring Nightreign game director, Junya Ishizaki, told Gamespot in a new interview that FromSoftware knew fans have favourite bosses from past games, and simply wanted to bring them back, and update them so that players could take them on them again. The primary reason for these existing bosses in Nightreign is from a gameplay perspective, Ishizaki confirmed.Ishizaki also pointed out, as you might have already guessed, that the roguelike format of Nightreign requires a lot of novel content, as players are expected to go through the game multiple times across different in-game days. Thats precisely why FromSoft decided to dig through the archives to see which bosses could work in the new format. We obviously understand that our players have a lot of affection for these characters and they have a lot of fond memories of battling them in these games, so we didn't want to encroach too much on that lore aspect, he added, immediately shooting down all your lore theories. Which reappearance from a past game will be the most surprising? | Image credit: Bandai NamcoOf course, these wont be identical to their counterparts in the original game. Ishizaki explained that some tweaks have been made so they better fit the gameplay of Nightreign. The character freedom and speed in Elden Ring would trivialise many of the classic bosses that struck fear in the hearts of players then, so these new versions will likely be faster and more aggressive to match. But it was more so from a numbers perspective, he added. And just to add to that quickly, also from a personal standpoint, I thought it'd be kind of fun.Elden Ring Nightreign just had its release date confirmed. The game arrives May 30 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. We played it, and Alex had a lot of praise for how well it makes use of its unusual structure and what you can expect when you actually get your hands on it.

Doom And GloomAs Marvel sets shooting dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, you can't help but wonder if it's too little, too lateLittle reason to be excited about either of them right now.Image credit: Marvel Studios News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 12, 2025 It sounds like all the shooting dates for the next couple of Avengers films have been decided, though at this point, I'm wondering why anyone still cares. As part of promoting the latest upcoming addition to the MCU, Captain America: Brave New World, Anthony Mackie spoke with Deadline about the experience of making the film alongside an actor like Harrison Ford, but also of the upcoming pair of Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars. Doomsday is obviously up first, currently set to be released May 1, 2026, with a shooting date kicking off in either March or April. "We shoot in London through the summer and then the following summer we shoot the next one [Avengers: Secret Wars]," Mackie explained. "Its going to be a full slate."To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Mackie didn't have much to share by way of casting news, as he claimed to not know apart from Robert Downey Jr. being a part of the movie as Doctor Doom. "I dont know how many are coming back. RDJ made the big announcement that hes coming back. Other than him I dont know who of the original crew will be coming back, but I know he will be. Im excited to be able to go to work with him, go toe to toe with him."The only problem is, will people care as much as they used to? Following Endgame, Marvel has struggled to find the same successes it once had aside from last year's Deadpool & Wolverine, not to mention the reset the MCU had due to the studio dropping the Kang storyline. While I don't personally think the earlier Marvel movies did a perfect job at building towards Infinity War and Endgame (we all remember how ham fisted the Infinity Stones stuff was in Age of Ultron), it was at least building towards something over the years. Right now, though, the MCU doesn't even have a big bad.We can assume that Doctor Doom will be making an appearance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is due out this June 25, but between that, Captain America, and Thunderbolts, there isn't much reason to get excited about a new Avengers film. Guess we'll have to wait and see if these three incoming entries can change that feeling.

Second TrilogyTomb Raider 4-6 Remastered happened because "it just didn't feel right" to do 4 and push the other entries aside, Aspyr saysIt was a chance to make things right.Image credit: VG247 Article by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 12, 2025 Core Design's Tomb Raider games were (and still are) an odd bunch. After the critical success of the original trilogy, which Aspyr brought back with a strong remastered re-release last year, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation did well enough, and then Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness crashed the IP (and the studio) until Crystal Dynamics came along. However, Aspyr says the plan always was to refresh all of them with Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered. We talked to Jordon Reese, Product Manager at Aspyr, to learn a bit more about the company's approach to a bumpier second set of games and what the vision behind the entire effort was. So far, we're fairly confident this second remastered collection will be every bit as carefully crafted as the first one.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The following Q&A has been editorialized, trimmed, and rearranged for clarity and cohesion."From the start, we always envisioned giving fans the complete classic Tomb Raider experience, encompassing all six of the original Core Design games. However, the overwhelmingly positive response to Tomb Raider I-III Remastered truly solidified our commitment to this vision," Reese explained. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered exceeded expectations last year according to Embracer, which definitely explains this second collection being fast-tracked... as well as the excitement surrounding the Soul Reaver 1+2 remaster that arrived back in December.Reese added the reception was "a powerful reminder of how much these games really mean to this passionate community," which pushed the dev team "to tell a complete narrative." While Aspyr acknowledges that the fifth and sixth entries aren't nearly as beloved, the company also decided this was the perfect the opportunity to improve them as much as possible while keeping the original vision alive. "It just didn't feel right coming from Tomb Raider I-III Remastered to only do IV," the product manager added. Image credit: AspyrWhile we wait for the next Tomb Raider to be unveiled, all eyes are set on the upcoming TV show from Amazon and this new remastered collection. Needless to say, the OG Tomb Raider fans are extremely protective of Lara Croft and the IP as a whole. In fact, many of them would argue returning to Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness is a waste of time for everyone involved. How does Aspyr plan to win them over while inviting fresh newcomers into Lara Croft's "darkest adventures"?"The pressure that we feel is self-imposed as we're trying to bring these games back into the market for both veteran gamers and gamers today," Reese confirmed to us. If you're familiar with Aspyr's remasters, they're known for being quite traditional. Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles is only the latest example, and it sounds like the company will be sticking to that approach for the foreseeable: "Our primary focus with these titles is to both preserve the original look and feel while giving gamers something additional to be excited about with updated graphics and functionality." Image credit: AspyrCore Design is, of course, no more, but what about Crystal Dynamics? Have they lent a hand to ensure consistency across all Tomb Raider games, old and new? Aspyr admits they're "a collaborative effort throughout," suggesting communication has been fluid from start to finish, and that also includes the Tomb Raider I-III remasters."We work closely with Crystal Dynamics to make sure we're keeping true to the original vision of the game while also adding enhancements where we can. It's of the utmost importance to maintain the visual tone and style of these original classics so working with the IP holder helps make sure we're hitting that mark." This also includes the Embracer Group, the current rights holder, while Crystal Dynamics is the studio actively developing Lara Croft's upcoming all-new adventure.Veterans fans might also remember, even if they haven't replayed these installments as many times as the first three, that things get very weird very fast, presenting a number of challenges during the transformation into retro games with a more modern sensibility. This affects level and character design across the board, and I asked Reese about such difficulties. The secret to getting it right? Going back and forth on many elements and tweaking things until it all comes together: "We spend many hours fine-tuning color, lighting, ambiance, and fidelity so the experience were providing is the experience people remember from all those years ago." But, you know, less blocky and pixelated. Image credit: AspyrOn the matter of how these three revisited entries will actually play in 2025, we've yet to experience the results for ourselves, but considering how Aspyr has improved middling releases with a cult following in the past (and we're talking about other IPs here), we're optimistic about a positive reevaluation of Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness thanks to this second trip down memory lane with Ms. Croft.Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is coming to PC (Steam, Epic Games, and GOG), PS4/5, Xbox Series X/S plus One, and Nintendo Switch on February 14.

SighEx-Activision boss suggests buying Project Gotham Racing developer was a bad acquisition, and it's seemingly scarred him so badly he can't remember Bizarre Creations' nameIn the same chat, Bobby Kotick did manage to recall the name of Neversoft, because it can be interpreted as a gag about erections.Image credit: Kleiner Perkins News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 12, 2025 Former Activision Blizzard CEO has said that buying a UK-based studio known for making driving games on Xbox was "a bad acquisition", but wasn't able to remember the name of said studio. It seems likely he was talking about Project Gotham Racing and Blur developer Bizarre Creations.Speaking on the Grit Podcast of American venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, Kotick told an interviwer and former EA COO Bing Gordon that during his time at Activision, the company "actually had a bad acquisition".To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "The company that was, um in Manchester, that did the driving game for Xbox, and it was called, um" the former exec continued, seemingly struggling to recall the name of the studio in question. Assuming he meant Liverpool rather than Manchester, it'd appear Bizarre fits the bill here, given it's best known for developing Xbox exclusive series Project Gotham Racing."They had a good guy, who was running the day-to-day," Kotick recalled. "It was $80 million, and we wrote it off two years later," he added in respone to Gordon asking if this was a "bet the company acquisition", "Everything about it violated all our principles. That guy was an expensive lesson."Bizarre was acquired by Activision in September 2007, and closed in 2011, after efforts to find a buyer for it fell through. While under the Acti banner, it released the likes of Blur and James Bond 007: Blood Stone. The next bit of the podcast sees Kotick outline how Activision's strategy of acquiring studio's differed from EA's, with the latter choosing to "Electronic Arts-ify" new buys by ding things like changing their names to the likes of 'EA City Name', whereas Activision preferred to let them retain their original identities. He then did recall the name of another Activision studio - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater developer Neversoft - quipping "there was probably a decade where you couldn't have a company called Neversoft". He and Gordon then had a nice chuckle.Do you wish Bizarre Creations was still around, probably making good racing games? Let us know below.

Fog's Setting In"I was willing to lose a job over this one" Daredevil: Born Again's showrunner on bringing back two beloved Netflix characters as part of its creative rework"Theyre the heart of his world."Image credit: Marvel News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 12, 2025 The upcoming Daredevil series almost didn't feature beloved Netflix characters Karen and Foggy, but Born Again's showrunner was dead set on including them.Daredevil was obviously quite infamously creatively overhauled back in 2023, in part because of some wider changes in how Marvel was handling TV shows, but also because it sounds like it just wasn't working. A little while later, Dario Scardapane joined the show, having previously served as a writer and executive producer on Netflix's Punisher series, and as it turns out, a big part of getting Born Again back on track was by bringing Matt Murdock's closest friends Karen and Foggy back into the fold. "That was actually one of the first things I said to the bosses," Scardapane said in an interview with Empire. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "You cant do this show without Karen and Foggy. Theyre Matts family. Theyre the heart of his world. You cant take them out without explaining why, and if that explanation doesnt ring true, dont take them out." Part of their addition was to almost make it more of a continuation of the Netflix series, as opposed to technically featuring a new Daredevil entirely. "It was much less the world we knew, and more trying to blaze a new trail, but in doing so, theyd forgotten some things that really were necessary to the engine of the story."In fact, Scardapane wouldn't have joined the series at all if the pair of characters weren't allowed to be in it, especially considering that the Netflix series ended with the three of them wanting to turn their form from Nelson & Murdock to Nelson, Murdock & Page. "I was willing to lose a job over this one. Because Season 3 of the Netflix show ended with a dream, with the names on that napkin. If you dont pay that off, youre not giving your characters context. You cant ignore that dream."Whether Scardapane will be able to capture the same magic that hit for a lot of people all those years ago, we won't know until the show is out (though you can probably be confident in it being pretty violent). Luckily, you don't have to wait all that long, as it premieres on Disney Plus March 5.

Taking The ReignsFromSoft promises Elden Ring Nightreign wont be a live-service game, and will arrive on May 30Music to my ears!Image credit: FromSoftware News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 12, 2025 Start getting your team together, FromSoftware lovers, because Elden Ring Nightreign finally has a release date.Later this week a select few will be able to get their hands on Elden Ring Nightreign for the first time through its upcoming network test. An exciting prospect to be sure, but you know what's more exciting? A release date, which just so happens to be this coming May 30, meaning if you aren't a part of the cohort of Soulslike lovers trying out Nightreign this weekend, you've only got a little under three months to wait to actually try it out. Of course, you might still have some questions about the game, especially if you aren't able to try it out this week - lucky for you, our own Alex went hands-on with the game recently, Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki reiterated one important thing about the game as part of it: it won't be live service. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "Ishizaki wouldnt really be drawn, saying that FromSoftware will be monitoring feedback," Alex wrote in his preview, going on to say, "but he was keen to impress that the update cadence will not be that of a live service game, but something more akin to the update schedule for other FromSoftware games." Honestly, as a bona fide live service hater, this is great news to me. I can't think of anything worse than having to force myself to play something like a Soulslike just to get the latest cool skin or whatever, I want to take my own time to go through it.This isn't the first time Ishizaki made it clear that Nightreign will not be a live service game, as he told PC Gamer last December that with the game, FromSoft wanted to "have a game that felt like a complete package out of the box on the day of purchase, so everything is unlockable, everything is contained with that purchase."When Elden Ring Nightreign launches on May 30, you'll be able to pick it up on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

It Burns, BurnsElden Ring Nightreign is blisteringly, stress-inducingly fast-paced, and more thrilling than I could have imagined - hands-on previewElden Ring Nightreign diverges from Souls far more than I expected - but also translates the genres trademark masochism to fast-paced co-op PVE perfectly.Image credit: VG247 Article by Alex Donaldson Assistant Editor Published on Feb. 12, 2025 Every now and then, a video game preview just has it. Theres an atmosphere. A buzz. Sometimes thats when a game is hotly anticipated, obviously. Others its a random game you dont necessarily expect. Those are the best ones, by the way. Anyway, my point is that every now and then a special game begets a special event. And the latest pleasant surprise to evoke such emotion is Elden Ring Nightreign.Listen. I know what youre probably thinking. This is a pseudo-sequel to one of the greatest games of all time, so of course it has it, whatever it is. But, honestly - I went into a seven-hour play session entirely unconvinced by the games concept. As someone who plays Souls games more or less entirely as a single-player endeavor, I just didnt think this was for me. I left the hands-on completely convinced. Moreover, I left it obsessed. This is a game I cant quite stop thinking about playing more of.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. I know I wasnt the only one. Sitting down to play in groups of three, which is the intended way Nightreign is to be experienced, there was clear curiosity in the air. Within an hour or so I could hear cheers from across the room. Crowds gathered around groups that were doing well and nearing the final, most challenging battles of a run. When people succeeded, relative strangers were springing to their feet and hugging as others erupted into cheers. This is a game that fosters that sense of connection with ease.Clearly then, this is not your typical Souls game. In fact, broadly speaking, Im astonished at how little it resembles those games in all but the most superficial of ways. The core similarities are in the basics of combat and in assets, with the enemies and world a mish-mash collection of things that are familiar from Elden Ring and a few of the other Souls titles rearranged, remixed, and rebalanced for a co-op multiplayer experience. Aside from the visual, though, the tempo of the game immediately sets it apart. Where traditional Souls is plodding and methodical by design, this is a game where the pressure is always on. Each player is like a hammerhead shark, forward momentum vital to your very survival. The sense of speed in Nightreign is definitely a focus, and its definitely a big change from Elden Ring and our other previous titles, Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki tells me. This is his first game direction gig, but Ishizaki is a FromSoftware stalwart of over a decade, and was the battle director on the base Elden Ring. A fan of co-op experiences, hes taken the series in this new - and much faster - direction. We found that as we created the game that the speed is something you quite quickly get used to, Ishizaki continues. We wanted it to be approachable. We wanted to tie it into the multiplayer aspect of being able to quickly jump into a game either by yourself or with other people. We wanted it to feel a little bit loose and flexible. Which witch is which? | Image credit: FromSoftwareIshizakis descriptor is a good one. The movement has a sort of casual loosey-goosey nature to it that feels vaguely like youre Spider-Man, or in Assassins Creed, rather than a suffering Souls hero. Jumping at ledges sees you mantling, clambering. You can climb anything in a few seconds, almost. A mages tower thatd inevitably have an elevator in Elden Ring proper can now be clambered in no time at all. The pace you can set is quite universal across all of the various character classes you can choose from, regardless of the weight of their weapons or armor. The only thing that slows this pace, ultimately, is when it comes to time to fight. The speed is entirely necessary, and is a great part of the thrill. The structure of a run of Nightreign sounds initially complicated, but its actually quite simple. Theres a battle royale structure in that at the start of a run you drop in to a circular map which gradually becomes subsumed behind a ring of fire. The space you have to explore narrows over the course of a day. By the time you reach nightfall, you and your companions are limited to only a small area of the map - essentially, a boss arena. If you can beat the boss and survive the night, full exploration is returned to you for a second day, followed by a second challenging night of terror. Survive that and youll face the Night Lord, the final boss of the run.In the base shipping game therell be eight Night Lords, and youll select which you want to face in the pre-run menus. Each Night Lord also comes with a varied selection of bosses that can appear as their deputies on Day One or Day Two, and map placements will shift in certain ways on different runs. Experienced players will be able to figure out which bosses theyre set to face by examining which boss arena the ring of fire is pushing you towards, giving you more time to plan your character build.Character builds are why speed is of the essence - and its all about gear. Elden Ring Nightreign is a role-playing game at 200mph; during those daytime exploration phases, youre running around the map like a total nutcase. Youre seeking out weaker mini-bosses who, when bopped, drop loot orbs that give you a choice between one of three pieces of equipment. Theyll also drop runes when defeated, helping to contribute to a much-expedited level up process - you just run to a site of grace and interact with it to buy instant level-ups. Theres no carefully selecting stats - theres no time. Your chosen character will level up along their natural attributes - so if you pick a mage, theyll grow the stats that make sense for a mage with each level-up. The process is way faster; over the course of an hour youll go from level 1 to something like level 15 if youre playing well. Get a bird's eye view. | Image credit: FromSoftwareSpeed matters because drops are so random. This is where Nightreigns roguelike elements come into play. I cant quite describe how much I enjoyed the sense of terror each time I realized the ring was closing in and nightfall was coming, bringing with it a hard-as-nails boss, while I wasnt quite ready. You truly panic: Bollocks. We need another two levels minimum. We need to beat another boss and pray for a better weapon drop. Oh god. Oh, s**t.This is a fascinating feeling for the game to inspire - the constant sense of a ticking clock that fosters a knot in your stomach. Its also a wonderful inversion of the Souls formula. In regular Souls, you prepare and prepare, then often throw yourself against the brick wall that is a boss until something clicks. Here theres no quick respawn, bonfire from which you can back to the boss at speed - if you wipe, its game over and time to start a new run, resetting all progress. But the masochistic terror that Nightreign manages to instill in its best is totally reminiscent of the best stomach-turning moments from Souls; its just evoked in a different way. While drops are random, Nightreign is also deftly successful at making players feel in control. As the video game social media clap back goes, you control the buttons you press. From the second you drop where you go, what mini-bosses you target, and where you loot in the limited time available all contribute to your situation when the sun sets. These decisions have enormous weight in each run - but also have to happen at great speed. In terms of how this evolves in the late game, we want players to feel like the decisions in each session throughout the map really change how you approach these boss encounters, explains Ishizaki. And vice versa - which boss encounters you choose in the late game, these later bosses that are going to unlock are going to have some well, theyre going to be quite unique in their own ways. So we want players to figure out their build and route through the map according to which boss theyve chosen. We hope that this aspect, the decisions they make, is quite important to players. Know your Grace. | Image credit: FromSoftwareEach decision should probably be considered as a group, too. You can play Elden Ring Nightreign one of two ways: solo, or with three players. There are no AI companions - so its either solo, or with two other real humans, either through buddying up with friends or through matchmaking. To underline, theres no two-player option - though Ishizaki says if theres demand, a two-player balance is something they might consider. The game is meant to be played with three, though. If youre in a group, maybe you split up, maybe you stay together, but so long as you band together at the end for the boss encounter, thats all that matters, says Ishizaki. Theres no real restrictions surrounding the multiplayer; you dont need to babysit each other. You can go off and do your own thing, and then come back for the boss at the end. While thats true, I sort of struggle to imagine wandering the world on my own. I wouldve been truly screwed without allies to revive me a couple of times per run. In fact, we only had solid success when really working as a team, shouting out what loot we were finding (drops are unique for each player, but you can drop something to pass it to an ally if you feel its better in their hands). Again, the ring of fire pressures you constantly. These discussions need to be had at speed. I love the urgency. I love the stress of it all.Part of the stress, I admit, came from my choice of class. I picked a mage, the Recluse. Shes a fragile thing that can turn into a truly devastating glass cannon with the right gear found along the way. I felt mages were sort of easy mode in Elden Ring, but not bloody so here. However, the Recluse is also the perfect class through which to explain the new skill system and weapons - so I devoted most of my play session to her.In terms of gear, only weapons matter in Nightreign. Theres no armor slots, and only a pair of accessory slots. Otherwise, its all weapons. Weapons have their base attack stats, but also often carry a buff - and this buff is in play regardless of if youre using the weapon or not, so long as youre carrying it in one of your characters eight weapon slots. For instance, as the Recluse I only really wanted staffs for casting magic - but I also found a dagger that, when in my possession, reduced my chances of getting targeted by enemies. This was perfect - I held on to that dagger for dear life, let my tankier allies draw aggro, and then shredded enemies by spell-slinging from a distance. But for a mage, management of FP - mana - is vital. And in Nightreign theres no flask to restore FP, only health. The Recluse can restore FP two ways - by visiting a site of grace or by ripping mana from injured enemies (or, indeed, allies). This is the Recluses special skill, which results in a fascinating tempo to combat - casting basic glintstone sorceries - or something better if you find a staff with a better spell attached - then performing the skill to suck in some FP restoration. Then back on the attack. Dancing back and forth, the dodges needed to do so require careful management of your limited stamina bar. Phwoar, the legs on that one. | Image credit: Bandai NamcoOnce youve reaved FP off three consecutive beings, their essence gets compiled into a magic cocktail. My touchstone for this is to say its sort of like the Mix command in some Final Fantasy games. Elden Ring has four types of elemental damage - Magic, Fire, Lightning, and Holy. I assume Nightreign is the same. Enemies will have an elemental affiliation based on their nature and whatever action theyre currently doing; so drawing FP from a dragon as it breathes fire will add a fire charge to your magic cocktail. Once your magic cocktail has three charges, the next time you perform your ability youll perform a powerful spell instead, with the effects of the spell determined by the combination of elements in your cocktail. Its neat. Each class - and though there were only four in the demo I understand theres quite a lot more of them - has a unique ability like this. One class has a grappling hook that can be used to pull smaller enemies to you or drag yourself to larger enemies to kick off airborne combos, for instance. Each character also has an appropriate ult which charges as you fight and then can be triggered in a pinch.Like I say, the tempo and timbre of it all just feels right. I wasnt sure FromSoftware would know how to make a game like this, but its utterly nailed it. Part of that, I sense, comes from a probable laser focus on getting the design right - something which has doubtless been assisted by how familiar much of the world and the beasts that inhabit it are. Take the world of Limveld, for instance - this Fortnite-esque circular island features great similarities to Limgrave from the main game in a visual sense, but its layout is all-original. Every now and then, youll notice little chunks that are identical to something you might recognize from Elden Ring, like pieces of modular world design have been pulled apart and glued back together in new formations. But by the end of my seven hours of hands-on, I found it difficult to care. Theres a habit among gamers to think of asset reuse as a bad thing - but can it really be so bad if it allows fascinating iteration such as this?We simply felt this was a good opportunity to create a fresh experience by adding in these elements from previous games, and from Elden Ring as well. It felt like a good way to freshen things up in terms of this new gameplay approach, this new sense of speed in Nightreign, Ishizaki admits. Mob rule. | Image credit: Bandai NamcoThis means not just familiar looking locale assets and trash mobs, but also returning bosses alongside new baddies - including some ripped from other Souls games. One of our day one bosses was the Centipede Demon, last seen in 2011s Dark Souls and now given new moves to help it fight three heroes at once.We wanted them to feel familiar, but still have this essence of being a new experience in Nightreign. This was part of the selection process - how they led to that feeling of a new experience in a new game - and also how we differentiated them from the new bosses created for Nightreign.Thinking about the reused assets really brings us to the most curious question about Nightreign, and the largest unknown for me still - a matter of content. Limveld is the sole area in the game, essentially, but for the hub zone that is another version of Roundtable Hold. It also uses the visual style of just one zone of Elden Ring. The path seems pretty obvious: an update down the line that adds a new zone themed after Caelid, complete with new returning bosses and all-new Night Lords? Then Liurnia, I assume? And so on? Or not?Ishizaki wouldnt really be drawn, saying that FromSoftware will be monitoring feedback - but he was keen to impress that the update cadence will not be that of a live service game, but something more akin to the update schedule for other FromSoftware games. Alrighty then. What I can say is that one map, even one that adjusts significantly from one run to the next, gives concerns about the amount of content in this release - even if it isnt full price. Lore nerds will find that theres Souls-y lore to uncover here, too, despite this being a game with no luscious item descriptions or the like. Instead, downtime in the Roundtable Hold hub between runs will see a narrative unfurl as the Night Lords are toppled. While you might not expect quite the same volume or extent of lore content as in Elden Ring, we have included some of these aspects, Ishizaki notes. Its a little bit less about uncovering the lore of the world and more about uncovering the lore of each of these individual characters. Why theyve come to the Lands Between how and why theyve banded together to battle the Night Lords there will definitely be a time and place to uncover those aspects of these characters. So Im hoping the lore buffs look forward to that. FromSoft really is on fire at the moment (sorry). | Image credit: Bandai NamcoBut a dollop of lore between successful runs is unlikely to hold attention truly long-term - and so I cant help but wonder what FromSoftware has planned for the longer-term future. The path of expanding the game with more maps based on the other biomes of Elden Ring seems obvious - but its fair to say that FromSoftware doesnt airways take the obvious path. So who knows? Well, they know. They just wont tell us yet.It speaks to how impressed I was with the game, though, that is my first thought. Based on the fact it took the better part of seven hours to get a comfortable victory under our belt, and given the fact that theres at least eight permutations, each more challenging, each with a great degree of randomness clearly theres enough game here to be worth the money. But I could easily see this being a staple that I play long-term, if the content plan is there. The fact that I think that is probably one of the best endorsements I could give, in fact.Anyway, I suppose this all amounts to me saying: I think those psychos have done it again. Final judgement will have to be reserved for launch (which is May 30, by the way) - but I cant believe how this game rocketed from something of a curiosity to something that I absolutely must have. I cant wait for the final thing.

  • Dexter: Resurrection continues to build an impressive cast with a Game of Thrones alum, and it sounds like he's almost guaranteed to be killed off

Born AgainDexter: Resurrection continues to build an impressive cast with a Game of Thrones alum, and it sounds like he's almost guaranteed to be killed offThe character is a billionaire, it's a shoo-in, no?Image credit: Showtime/ Warner Bros News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 12, 2025 The cast of Dexter: Resurrection is looking more and more impressive, as now Game of Thrones' own Peter Dinklage joins the cast.It was just reported last month that the iconic Uma Thurman, best known for her role in Kill Bill, had joined the cast of Dexter sequel series Resurrection, and now, as reported by Deadline, another big name has joined the cast: Peter Dinklage. You'll obviously best know Dinklage for his time on Game of Thrones as Tyrion Lannister, but he's also appeared in films like X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Avengers: Infinity War, as well as, if impermanently, the original Destiny. An official synopsis for Dexter: Resurrection hasn't been revealed yet, but Deadline was able to share some details about Dinklage's character. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Dinklage will apparently be playing Leon Prater, who Deadline describes as "a billionaire venture capitalist. To the world, Leon is a generous philanthropist, but behind his polished exterior lies dark intrigue." It's also believed that Dinklage will be the main antagonist for the season, and if you ask me, all of that sounds like a recipe for Dexter ending up killing the guy. Whether he's successful or not, well, we'll see. This isn't the first we've heard about the character either, as Thurman's character Charley is the head of security of Leon Prater, previously described as a "former Special Ops officer, Charley worked various high-level private security jobs before taking on her position as the resourceful and meticulous right-hand woman for Prater." Thurman and Dinklage seem like a really great pairing when it comes to casting, so I'll be curious to see how the overall plot shakes out.Michael C. Hall is also set to reprise his role as the titular Dexter, last seen in the 2021 series New Blood, though last heard in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin where he serves as the narrator for his younger self's escapades.

  • Jean Reno would be "pleased" to reprise his role in an Onimusha 3 Remaster, if it ever happens

Back At It AgainJean Reno would be "pleased" to reprise his role in an Onimusha 3 Remaster, if it ever happensThe ball's in your court, Capcom.Image credit: Capcom News by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Feb. 12, 2025 With a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny having been announced last week, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword on the horizon, the future is full of excitement for fans of the classic Capcom series. There is still a gap in the fanbase's heart, however. The people want an Onimusha 3: Demon Siege remaster too, as well as Jean Reno's return to the world of video games.Well it turns out, Mr Reno is game as well! I reached out to Jean Reno via his agent following the Onimusha 2 remaster announcement to ask whether or not he'd be keen to return to reprise his role if an Onimusha 3 remaster were in the cards. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Said agent replied, telling me: "Of course, Jean would be pleased to reprise his role in Onimusha 3." For those unaware, Jean Reno (known for his roles in films such as Leon the Professional, The Big Blue, and of course Flushed Away) played the pivotal role of Jacques Blanc, who swaps places in time with the series protagonist Samanosuke Akechi. This, in short, sends Jean Reno back to Feudal Japan for all manner of action game goodness. It's brilliant.Reno's willingness to reprise his role is wonderful news, and would continue the brief history of Onimusha voice actors returning for remastered versions. When the Onimusha: Warlords remaster was released back in 2018, the original model and voice for Samanosuke, Takeshi Kaneshiro, came back to re-record his lines. Onimusha has a lovely legacy of using actors to voice and model main characters, which is why Reno was brought in to record lines for Onimusha 3 all the way back in the early 2000s.It's also a surefire way to keep fans of the original happy. Take the Dead Rising Remake, which while great, put off a portion of the fan base due to its recasting of every character. There are some good performances in there, sure, but fans of the original are always going to have a soft spot for the OG voices. As for Onimusha 3, Reno lent his voice and his face, so it would be a bit odd to not bring him back all things considered. Now, the world (including Jean Reno) may have to wait a while for this to actually happen. There'll be around about a seven year gap between the release date of the Onimusha 1 remaster and the still pending 2025 release date for Onimusha 2's new look. Here's hoping that with Way of the Sword coming and a lot of noise being made about the series right now, it won't take long to get Onimusha 3 back in our hands. The people want it. Jean Reno wants it. The ball's in your court, Capcom!

  • Meet the crew documenting the bars, pizza parlors, and back rooms that make up the American fighting game scene
    www.vg247.com
On the RoadMeet the crew documenting the bars, pizza parlors, and back rooms that make up the American fighting game sceneLocals Unknown is a new series covering the small gatherings that form the foundational scenes for Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and beyond.Image credit: VG247 Article by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Feb. 11, 2025 For decades, video games have been a social venture for many. This has its roots in the arcade era, before home consoles and LED-laden gaming PCs led the gaming enthusiasts away from the outside world and into the comfort of their own homes. These social spaces are still around in LANs, gaming cafes, and tournaments, but have shrunk far from their relevance in the hearts of the many. You used to meet Greg face to face playing Counter Strike Source or Street Fighter 2 out on the town. Now, Greg's face has been replaced with a Clannad profile picture on Discord. Times have changed. But there are still those who venture out for a taste of some real socialization. A select few for whom gaming isn't as sweet unless shared with likeminded folks within walking or driving distance. While these digital churches are slowly dropping off, a passionate few have decided to document such places through the lens of grassroots fighting game tournaments in a new video series: Locals Unknown. Their first stop, the basement of a college town pizza parlor. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. I love this idea, and as such sat down with two of the people involved in the project. Victeemo, a professional fighting game player, and Siam who owns the esports team Kanme Esports. Together, with additional help from Tekken player and King main Sol Naciente, the small crew has taken it upon themselves to document local scenes and spaces they come across in their travels. It's very classic YouTube, a ragtag blend of old internet vlogging with T.V travel documentaries. The project started at the start of Victeemo's time as a player represented by Kanme, as both he and Siam decided some sort of creative content would make for a good addition to the usual output of just showing up to events while repping the brand.Siam: "When talking with Victeemo, we were both very passionate about where we started in the fighting game community, which was our local scene. Local scenes are very important places! They're starting points for people who are interested in the games, and some of them are in very different locations."Victeemo: "At the end of the Tekken World Tour season 1 I was looking around for sponsors, and I came across Kanme. It was funny, we both discovered Locals Unknown together [...] We brainstormed a little bit, and then Sian went 'what if we send you around to locals, and you document locals?' I thought that was a great idea, and something I wanted to touch on.""I'm primarily first a competitor, and have been that since the beginning of Tekken 7, but my second priority is community. It's really exciting and I'm happy to be doing this, and that it caught so many eyes." One thing I love about the series so far is the build up to the event, which shows everything getting set up, the drive to the local, and more. | Image credit: Kanme EsportsVicteemo, who had never used a video camera prior to Locals Unknown, is now going around and recording locals at their best. He's backed up by Siam and Sol_Naciente, who take the time to edit it back home. No big-corporate finance, just a bit of passion for the community and a can-do attitude. The pair shared a lot in common, as you'd expect. But they also shared a loss familiar with many competitors in the fighting game space. Their locals, the ones they grew up in, improved within, and found friendships at, had closed. Xanadu Games, a Maryland institution for fighting game players, held its final event in December 2024. Both Siam and Victeemo were there to see it off.Victeemo: "We had a local called Xanadu, it was inside this very small building in a business centre right outside Baltimore city. When the game came out, we stuffed it with 50 people for monthly locals where you could barely breath (laugh). That I think gave me the drive to compete at a higher level, but also gave me that love for the community aspect."Siam: "A lot of places have started to shut down. Even recently, one of the venues we used to go to has gone out of business - Xanadu Games. Me and Victeemo went to that place, and we were at the closing of the final event there. Seeing that, we wanted to put a microscope on the venues that still do exist." The crowd energetic at Xanadu's final event. | Image credit: @cheautomataThis was the kindling for the series itself, but it's not only due to Xanadu. Local scenes where games like Street Fighter, Tekken, and more have been played for years have been steadily shutting down over the past few years, replaced with larger but scarcer annual events or nothing at all. It is, in the minds of both Siam and Victeemo, a rough time for the fighting game local.Siam: I would say it's a very tough time (for local scenes). The convenience of online is there, especially post-2020. Before 2020 there were still readily available places. But after 2020 online tournaments became the go-to [activity]. Places that we could go to started going out of business, as they weren't getting the same number of people as they were prior. So right now, it's on the decline."Victeemo: "There are a lot of locals right now closing their doors, so to be able to shine a light on these locals that try to get people out there to experience the community, make new friends and relationships, is really important in comparison to the online scene right now."So why do all this? What's so important about these spaces that warrant a video series, and an article highlighting it. Well, in the mind of the duo, it's about paying back to the locals they came up in, and shining a spotlight on the environment that meant so much to them. You just don't get this sort of thing sat at home. It's what it's all about. | Image credit: KanmeVicteemo: "My partner and I, we've been together going on seven years now, and it's because we met through the fighting game community at Xanadu. I've built life-long friendships because of the fighting game community, and it's something I wouldn't trade the world for."Siam: "I think in a way it's about giving back. I think those playing these games should tell the story of where they began. I think it's a very down to the level type of story. A lot of these players, especially as their star rises, people start to focus on and idolize them. It's good it down to 'hey I'm a player too, I started somewhere like you did' and it all goes back to starting at their local scene.""I'm hoping to tell more of the human side, outside of the building and what everyone plays. There are people there, people who help build the community together."The first episode of Locals Unknown can be found on the Kanme channel here, and the next is currently in production. If you like what these guys are doing, send them some love. It's important to champion parts of the wider video game culture, especially portions that may have an end date.

Here We Go AgainIf you ask Walton Goggins, Fallout season 1 was "extraordinary", but season 2 "blows it out of the water", so you better cross your irradiated fingers and toes we don't have to wait too long for it"I cant wait for people to see it."Image credit: Prime Video News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 11, 2025 Filming for Fallout season 2 is still currently underway, and if The Ghoul himself is to be believed, we're in for a doozy of a season. The problem with the passage of time is that we have to let it happen in order to get to the things we want. That means as much as many of us might want Fallout season 2 right this second, we're going to have to wait until it's done. Unfortunately, it's not done, but it is seemingly filming again after production was paused due to the LA fires, as in a brief interview with Deadline lead actor Walton Goggins (who plays The Ghoul in the show) shared a small update about the upcoming second season, as well as his excitement for it.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "Were in the middle of filming it right now, weve been at it since November, and I can tell you that I thought Season 1 was extraordinary, personally, I was very pleased with it," Goggins said. "This blows it out of the water, what these writers have done and the artisans that have come together to tell this story. Its really gonna be something. I cant wait for people to see it. Were working really hard to make that happen." To see this content please enable targeting cookies. That obviously hypes up season 2 quite a bit, which is once again going to make that whole passage of time thing all the more annoying for those of you that enjoyed the first season, but alas, unless time travel is invented tomorrow (or yesterday? I don't know how it works, sue me), you're stuck waiting like everybody else.Season 2 will also see the arrival of some fresh but familiar failures in its cast, including Home Alone's very own Macaulay Culkin, and more recently it was reported that Kumail Nanjiani (Adventure Time, Eternals) is part of the show now too. What these additions mean for our protagonists, who knows! But for now, let's just trust in Goggins.
