  • Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered completes a trip down memory lane that remains unwelcoming despite its historical value

Old LessonsTomb Raider 4-6 Remastered completes a trip down memory lane that remains unwelcoming despite its historical valueWe must understand the past to prepare for the future.Image credit: Aspyr Article by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 16, 2025 Tomb Raider I-III Remastered was one of the biggest 'retro' releases of 2024, so we weren't entirely surprised to see Aspyr taking on IV-VI next (though we did have some burning questions). Now, the second volume of this collection has finally arrived, and I was lucky enough to spend some time revisiting The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and The Angel of Darkness ahead of the February 14 launch.Yes, these three games aren't nearly as good as the first trilogy, but they're still part of the long-running series' history and key to understanding why and how the transition into the 'Crystal Dynamics era' of the franchise happened. As you all know, three more mainline games (if you consider the Anniversary remake one of them) were released before a full reboot that was far gnarlier. Whether Aspyr will get to that trio following these entries remains a mystery for now.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It's understandable to read about some fans who are choosing to sit this one out. After all, The Last Revelation shows signs of fatigue, Chronicles is Lara Croft's strange Lost Levels moment, and The Angel of Darkness was a shoddy, largely unfinished transition to PS2. However, this second set of remastered games should at the very least be the best way to experience this chunk of Lara's history, and there's a lot of value in there for both completionists and people interested in learning about the action-adventure genre and how it became (years before Nathan Drake's arrival) what it is today.I'm happy to admit that I'm not as familiar with IV-VI as I was with the first three games. At some point during my childhood, Tomb Raider games on PS1 blurred together and I just began not to give a s**t until the 2013 reboot. Digging into The Last Revelation reminded me, however, that I'd actually played a decent amount of the game back in the day. My brain had totally suppressed the young Lara model for reasons unknown, and the race for fun against her mentor Werner Von Croy was another surprise after all these years even though it felt familiar. Image credit: Aspyr, VG247Things quickly get crazy in the fourth game, and I'd even say it has a better initial narrative hook than some of the previous entries. Moreover, the controls, even when using the original 'tank' ones (for science, as I don't want to put myself through that ever again) immediately feel snappier than I-III's. Mind you, Lara's notably elaborate animations for the time and more complex moves remain tough to fully adjust to; most of the difficulty in these old games comes from the controls, no matter how much Aspyr tinkers with them. The developers' commitment to fidelity and keeping the original games as intact as possible (also seen in recent Star Wars remasters such as Jedi Power Battles) continues to be a double-edged sword: These are polished iterations of the games as they were with some much-needed tweaks and even restored content, but if you found them brutal back then, chances are you won't feel differently nowadays. It's abundantly clear by now that Aspyr has committed to this vision for their remastering efforts (no matter the IP), and so far, it has an audience. Image credit: Aspyr, VG247Chronicles is an odd one. On the one hand, it was clearly a side project while a bigger team worked on The Angel of Darkness. On the other hand, the graphical and playable improvements are noticeable (as a reminder, you can switch with one button between the old and remastered presentations). Its biggest sin was not iterating enough on the formula, but looking back, it feels like an alright way to consume more old-school Lara Croft action and loopy exploration without worrying about the half-baked innovations seen later. That first Rome level alone (seen above) has some sweet layout design going on, so if anything, it's an interesting look at how Core Design continued to improve and try new things on that front. The elephant in the room, of course, is The Angel of Darkness, the game that killed Core Design's renewed plans for the series and made it end up with Crystal Dynamics. I'm not gonna lie: It's still pretty bad. Aspyr has clearly put a lot of effort into this one, making it somewhat bearable, but when even getting out of a room early on is troublesome, you know this one is only for the sickos. Image credit: AspyrThe premise (which I won't spoil here) is an enticing one though, and things get very weird plot-wise very fast, at least during the early hours, so it's not surprising to see diehards encouraging doubters to this day to give it a fair shake and power through the worst bits to find some gold. I don't think I'll do so, at least not right now, but I'm always into 'black sheep' getting a second chance, so perhaps we'll see some interesting writing and video essays done around this sixth entry in the near future.Overall, I've had a fun time with Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered so far because they sort of feel like odd, ancient artifacts that Lara would find in some godforsaken temple; they're hard to fully understand if you didn't play through them when they first released, but it's obvious from the get-go they're needed to complete the history behind one of gaming's most enduring legacies. Lots of patience are required not to bounce off almost instantly, but researchers and aspiring archaeologists shouldn't skip this one.Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is now available on PC (Steam, Epic Games, and GOG), PS4/5, Xbox Series X/S plus One, and Nintendo Switch.

  • As Promise Mascot Agency nears the end of its costumed run through the explosions of development, its devs are feeling good about handing their "band of freaks" over to you
    www.vg247.com
Promises KeptAs Promise Mascot Agency nears the end of its costumed run through the explosions of development, its devs are feeling good about handing their "band of freaks" over to youWe've made the game we want to make.Image credit: Kaizen Game Works Article by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 15, 2025 I think its difficult to convey what the game is, Oli Clarke Smith, director of Promise Mascot Agency, tells me.That's the thing that we've noticed and struggled with. We initially talked about the game - well, we still do - as an open-world mascot management crime drama, and to us that made perfect sense, but I don't think that has conveyed quite what the game is.Its a full open-world RPG with management aspects and creature collector aspects - and when people have got it, they've really clicked with it and understood it. The good thing that the team at Paradise Killer studio Kaizen Game Works have found as theyve grappled with gradually unveiling more and more about their 2025 release is this - early audience reviews of their band of freaks have been universally good.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. This gang of weirdos is the games mascots - the sentient burial mounds, cats whore really against adult video pixelation, and little guys like Mottsun, who just looks like the greatest thing of all-time - that youll be managing the mascotting of when you play Promise Mascot Agency. Most of them were designed in collaboration between Kaizens small British team - Clarke Smith, technical director Phil Crabtree, and art director Rachel Noy - and the Japanese duo of famed former Tango Gameworks artist Ikumi Nakamura and Mai Mattori. We went to her with absolutely nothing, Clarke Smith explains, "because wed just finished our previous game. Wed got the rough concept [for Promise Mascot Agency], and it was important for us to work with someone in Japan, being a Western team and setting a game in Japan. The mascots we got back were things that we would never have made ourselves and cultural references that we wouldn't have got to ourselves. While Kaizens devs are keen for their games to feel uniquely Kaizen, their approach to working with Nakamura and other collaborators has always been here's a rough idea of what we want, please put your own spin on it. It means that we get all of these lived experiences from other people coming into the game, the director says, citing the example of Nakamura telling them about visiting a bar on the real-life coast of Kyushu in southwestern Japan, where PMAs setting is based on.No one in said establishment wanted to speak to Nakamura due to her being an outsider to the area, and in telling stories like this, the artist gave Kaizen things they could draw on for the look and atmosphere of their town, Kaso-Machi. Naturally, there were also bits of their own lives in the UK that the team could bring to the story, with Noy relating that you can get at least a little bit of a similar feeling of being an outsider in a far-flung town if, for example, you walk into a pub in Cornwall while on holiday. Also, we watched a lot of Twin Peaks, she adds, that was a big, big reference and another reason we wanted to get Swery involved. It's not a bar, but you'll still probably get strange looks... | Image credit: Kaizen Game WorksThere were some tweaks made along the way and not everything translated - for example, Nakamura and Mattoris mascot designs had to be made to fit a relatively similar size and shape so that animations would work across mascots. But, Clarke Smith says, it was often a case of that doesnt quite fit the structure of the game, but 90% of it does, so we can put it in.In putting together the game thatd feature all of those designs and themes, Kaizen faced a different task than it had when making its first game. With Paradise Killer, Phil and I were the only employees at the time, so it was kind of us two just working out how to make a video game together, the director explains, It was a big conceptual change, going from mystery game to a management game, but in terms of our process and how we made the game, it felt much easier [this time]. He adds that its still been the hardest game hes ever worked on to make, but things like the way the team communicates have naturally evolved to become something that just clicks without as much conscious effort. It helps that some of the systems we've got are carried over from Paradise Killer, Crabtree adds, So, in terms of Okay, we need this sort of system, a lot of the coding's already done. Itll obviously need a bit of twisting and pulling, but it meant there was a bit more time for the design. He goes on to reveal that early on, the team went a lot more in-depth in terms of the management aspect of Promise Mascot Agency, creating a full calendar-style system in which youd be juggling assignments across days and weeks. This big, overly complex management stuff didnt really sit well with the chill world, bringing life back to the world and interacting with the characters, the technical director says, So, weve had to push and pull a little bit, but Im really happy with where weve got to on it, because the management sits there in the background and in some ways it's quite simple, but what's lying underneath is quite complex. You have to keep an eye on it, but it's not overwhelming. Just a little fire here, nothing too overwhelming. | Image credit: Kaizen Game WorksAs you manage your mascots by sending them on jobs, theyll run into issues that put them in danger of not being able to do the thing youve sent them off to do. These hazards, ranging from doors, to playful dogs, and normally-sized doors, came from what Crabtree wonderfully describes as a big old list of stupid things that could happen, which the team came up with after doing some YouTube research on mascot fails. Clarke Smith cites the iconic viral Japanese TV clip that is mascot Funassyi running away from a series of explosions as one, however, the team needed to make sure what they went with wouldnt be too tough to script and put together, as well as having an obvious bail resolution - the bit where you step in and try to help. All of this, and the rest of the game around it, evolved from art director Noys original idea of a mascot management sim in the style of games like Kairosofts Game Dev Story. We wanted to do something bigger and we were concerned from a business point of view about making a small-scale 2D simulation management game, Clarke Smith explains, Like, would that keep the company going?Along the way to what PMA is now, other features ended up being rejigged or ditched due to not meshing with what the vision evolved into. There were once loans you could take out and checkpoint races youd be able to do with Michi and Pinky in their cool little kei-truck. We never brought it up to a full feature, Clarke Smith says of the latter, because when you think about an open world, thats what every open world game does. We felt at a certain point we should put this in because we might need more gameplay, and then we realized that we didn't.Theyre still sitting there in the background, also existing because in Noys words, the team liked the idea of cool drift cars going down a mountain in Japan, likely to only be dusted off if Kaizen ends up being offered the chance to do something like an Initial D tie-in DLC. 'What would you know?' Shiori asked, calmly. | Image credit: Kaizen Game WorksBefore Kaizen can think about anything like that, though, theyll need to see how Promise Mascot Agencys release later this year goes, but theyre feeling pretty good about it. I think for a small team especially, what we've achieved is massive, Crabtree tells me, I don't know how many times Ive played the first two hours of the game now, having to go over, over, and over and over it again, either just to record footage or to fix bugs or whatever. I still find little things in there that I forgot about that make me smile, and I had that with Paradise Killer towards the end. I think for Paradise Killer, I didn't feel it until right before launch, whereas [this time] Ive felt it for a little bit longer.Ive fallen in love with our characters, I think, Noy adds, Im going to be so sad [when] were not working on it soon, but I think because I love them so much, I know that theres going to be other people like me out there who are going to love them too. Theres some nervousness, as the team knows its relying on people getting what its gone for with Promise Mascot Agency, but having already seen its style go down well once helps. We've made the game we want to make, Clarke Smith says, We know now that people like the writing of Paradise Killer. We know people like the characters of Paradise Killer, and we've taken those same qualities and put them into this. So, I feel more confident that if you're going to like the game, you're probably really going to like it.

  • UPDATE: Elden Ring Nightreign network test server issues make players late for their Valentine's Day plans to get absolutely wrecked by a whole load of big lads
    www.vg247.com
UPDATE (14/02/25, 2:50 PM GMT): FromSoftware has now tweeted the following update: "The first session of the Elden Ring Nightreign Network Test has ended. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the game server issues."Work is currently ongoing to improve the stability of the Network Test. An additional Network Test session is being considered. Thank you."Elden Ring Nightreign's network testing has kicked off today, with a session on February 14, which is Valentine's Day. There's been a problem for the maidenless hardcores who've told any sigificant others they might have to shove off for a few hours while they dive in - the start of the test has seen the game's servers fall over and die.Don't worry, though, a restrart that should fix things is currently being worked on.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "We are currently restarting the Elden Ring Nightreign game server," reads a machine-translated tweet from FromSoftware's Japanese player support account not too long after today's testing session was supposted to kick off, "We will provide an update once the restart is complete. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to our players. The official Elden Ring account has since followed up with its own message to the, er, "Nightfarers". "The #NIGHTREIGN PlayStation servers are currently under maintenance, it reads, "Work is ongoing to restore server functionality. Further updates will be provided. Thank you for your patience and understanding." To see this content please enable targeting cookies. So, as of writing, that's the situation. A load of would-be network testers sat on their sofas - probably in their pants given it's midday on a weekday and they're not at work - with no big bosses to batter their bottoms. Tragic, really.Hopefully it's sorted soon, and FromSoft maybe re-jigs its test plans to make up the lost time. If it's any consolation, not having this kind of thing happen when the game properly releases is the reason this testing is being done in the first place. Anyway, here's the list of other sessions FromSoft originally had planned for this test:Feb 15 04:00 - 07:00 CETFeb 16 20:00 - 23:00 CETFeb 16 12:00 - 15:00 CETFeb 17 04:00 - 07:00 CETWe here at VG247 are praying that you can get your Nightreign fix in once these issues are sorted. The good news is, this gives you the perfect chance to read our hands-on Nightreign preview, so you've got a better idea of what you'll be in for.

The Steam page for the free-to-play version of the title suddenly popped up in the early hours of this morning, though there's no release date for this new platform release as of yet. What there is however, is a pre-release event. Posted on official Infinity Nikki socials, players can net themselves some fancy rewards for adding the game to their Steam wishlist as a community. This includes some concept art, a mysterious milestone dubbed "More surprises", and a somewhat ominous "final surprise" at 200,000 wishlists. Personally, I'm hoping at 200,000 wishlists Infinity Nikki personally comes to my house and shoots me. It will probably be an in-game reward though. • The Finals finally gets Team Deathmatches as part of its fifth season, so go in there and cause some mayhem
    www.vg247.com
DeathmatchThe Finals finally gets Team Deathmatches as part of its fifth season, so go in there and cause some mayhemThe most beloved game mode for the average joe. News by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Feb. 14, 2025 The Finals will be getting Team Deathmatch as an alternate game mode to the usual fair of 3v3 objective based goodness as part of its fifth season. At last, those who don't like banking cash will have an opportunity to play with their brains turned all the way off.Revealed on official social media platforms for the game as well as its YouTube channel, the trailer for the mode fits into the current narrative theme of The Finals. CMS, a nefarious hacking group, has turned the gameshow on its head, and decided to flip the script with a kill-focused endeavor for contestants to try out. Thanks CMS.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Team Deathmatch will be a 5v5 game mode as opposed the the Cashout standard of 3v3v3, and works exactly as you'd expect. Two teams just straight busting it out with eachother until one of them comes out on top. You still get all that great environmental desctruction that you'd expect from The Finals. All in all, a crowd pleaser, and a good opportunity to jump back into the game.Because while we've all been living life and touching grass over the past year or so, The Finals has frankly evolved into one of the most fun FPS games out there at the moment. I recently redownloaded it just to touch base with the game and all its updates, and it's still just as fun as it was when it came out, albeit with way more weapons and maps to try out.Team Deathmatch has been something folks have been begging for every since The Finals released back in December 2023. To the developer's credit, they had a vision for the game and stayed true to their 3v3v3 format, something that set the game apart from its competitors. However, a year and change later, they've decided to let the people have what they've been longing for. Whether nor not Team Deathmatch sticks around forever, and if it'll have an additional impact on the game in the future, remains to be seen. For what it's worth, I do hope that Cashout remains the core game mode to the game. It's what the whole thing it built around, after all. Will this tempt you back to The Finals? Let us know below!

Keepin' OnAssassin's Creed Shadows pre-orders are doing okay, as you'd hope given Ubisoft just reaffirmed hopes for more Assassin's Creed-y things and live services in the futureDespite things looking a bit rocky for the publisher over the past little bit, it's sticking to its established hidden blades.Image credit: Ubisoft News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 14, 2025 Assassin's Creed Shadows pre-orders are performing solidly, according to Ubisoft. CEO Yves Guillemot has also said that, despite having not had the best last little bit, the publisher will be sticking to two very familiar types of games as its main focuses going forwards.Speaking at Ubisoft's presentation of its latest financial results, Guillemot asserted that the twice-delayed Shadows is performing in line with Assassin's Creed Odyssey in terms of pre-orders ahead of its currently scheduled release next month. That's pretty good assuming those numbers translate as Ubisoft hopes, with Odyssey being AC's second most successful entry when it comes to sales. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The CEO was also asked what Ubisoft's future would look like release-wise (thanks, VGC), and his response is something that'll probably not suprise you."We have been investing significantly for a big pipeline of products for the coming years along our two verticals, [these] being open-world action adventure as well as Game as a Service-native experiences," the exec said, "And thats what we want to deliver year after year."He went on to name Shadows, "big plans" for Rainbow Six Siege, Anno 117: Pax Romana, and mobile game The Division: Resurgence, as stuff the company has coming, adding that "all this is coming along well". While Ubisoft is under a fair amount of pressure to hit big with Shadows, as chatter about a potential sale and general money person discontent have followed Star Wars Outlaws underperforming Ubisoft's sales expectations. It's also worth noting that Guillemot was talking to shareholders here, who obviously tend to care mostly about how much money these plans might net them, hence Guillemot describing Assassin's Creedy things and The Crew: Motorfesty things using words like verticals. How do you feel about Ubisoft sticking to these two kinds of game as key focuses going forwards? Sticking Around?Wondering what GTA 6 releasing will mean for GTA Online? Take-Two's CEO has suggested it might depend on how many psychopathic trillionaires are left in Los SantosHey, Vice City's probably overrated anyway, call Lester and get on with breaking into Bolingbroke for the millionth time.Image credit: Rockstar Games News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 14, 2025 GTA 6 is coming. Don't snigger, you know I'm telling the truth. However, one of the many questions that's been on the lips of the millions of folks keenly awaiting its arrive has been what it could mean for GTA Online. Well, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has now said a thing that might hint at an answer.Speaking to IGN, Zelnick wouldn't directly address whether or not there are any plans to deploy a GTA Online replacement to go alongside GTA 6, as the original Online has with GTA 5, because no plans have been announced yet. Instead, he alluded to the company's track record when it comes to mainitaing support for titles that've since had sequels or evolutions arrive. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The specific example he pulled out was NBA 2K Online, the free-to-play and online-focused variant of NBA 2K which is aimed at the Asian market and countries like China."We launched NBA 2K Online in China, I think originally in 2012 if I'm not mistaken. And then we launched NBA 2K Online 2 in China in 2017, if I'm not mistaken. We did not sunset Online 1," the exec recalled, "They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience.""So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them," he added, providing what's almost certainly the key line here. From the sounds of it, the suggestion is that if Take-Two thinks it can see enough continued player demand and presence in the first GTA Online, it may well continue to support it, even if it does end up putting out some form of successor.Obviously, nothing's confirmed as of right now, so we'll just have to wait and see. It could be good news for those who own had of Los Santos and enough cars to fill every driveway in a small town, though, especially if the players who'd like to not have those fortunes vanish into oblivion are willing to put their attention where their mouths are.If you've got slightly more unhinged questions than this one you'd like to ask about GTA 6, you can check out the GTA 6 channel in Rockstar's new official Discord server. If you can get a word in edgeways amongst the constant stream of inane drivel.

  • PlayStation State of Play hit Tides of Annihilation shows off some fresh gameplay, and Baldur's Gate 3 fans are in for a special treat
    www.vg247.com
Whole Gang's HerePlayStation State of Play hit Tides of Annihilation shows off some fresh gameplay, and Baldur's Gate 3 fans are in for a special treatHere's an extended look at the kind of Arthurian bottom-kicking you'll be getting up to.Image credit: Eclipse Glow Games News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 14, 2025 One of the games that may well have caught your eye in this week's PlayStation State of Play was Tides of Annhilation, a freshly-announced action-adventure thing that'll see you slice through ruined London with a gang of knights King Arthur would've invited to his round table.Well, Chinese developer Eclipse Glow Games has now shown off an extended look at its gameplay. Plus, it's been revealed that the game's not just packing the obvious Baldur's Gate 3 star whose voice you heard the other day - there are at least two of them donning their chainmail for ToA.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. First of all, you can take a look at the new gameplay via IGN. It runs for about 11 minutes, and in that time you get to see protgonist Gwendolyn - played by Shadowheart voice actor Jennifer English - walk through some ruined streets that feature the likes of red post boxes so you know this is the capital of Sadness Island.Gwendolyn spends a time chatting with a companion character called Niniane, walking past bodies if people frozen in place by the "abrupt invasion from another realm" that's knocked London into this state, and battling knights in hack-and-slash combat that allows you to warp about and has some verticality to it.One cool section in a "fold realm" sees her run up the side of a magically-crumbling skyscraper, before she reaches a museum. Here, she battles a boss called Mordred - who says she's "Pendragon", so sounds pretty damn key to the Arthurian stuff going on - in a pretty cool multi-stage fight. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. That's about it for the gameplay, but there is one other interesting thing that's been revealed, as Baldur's Gate 3 voice actor and performance director Aliona Baranova has tweeted that she's playing Mordred."You all guessed Gwendolyn is voiced by Jen in 0.05 seconds, but not many recognised me as this blonde badass in the trailer, and thats on range," she wrote, Jen and I are finally playing opposite each other in Tides of Annihilation!!"So, a cool thing if you're big into BG3, and have enjoyed watching English and Baranova stream the game together. Tides of Annhilation's looking pretty interesting regardless, even if I'm only saying that because I've enjoyed some games in which London's a bit worse for wear over the past year.

Once it goes live, the events bonuses will be automatically active for all players across all Realms and World Tiers. They stack with any other XP or Gold-boosting you might have, too, such as from Elixirs, Incense and Seasonal Urns. Now, the reason this next one is interesting is that it adds gear to the offering for the first time. The standard version of Mothers Blessing offers a 35% increase in XP, and a 50% Gold increase (multiplicative). On top of that, this next one will also grant players a Gift of the Tree cache each time they return a Grim Favor.Caches contain random pieces of gear, weapons as well as gems and crafting materials, effectively making the grind easier. This is especially relevant this season because the entirety of the Seasonal Journey revolves around the Tree of Whispers and its caches, meaning youd be doing those anyway, and earning a bonus cache every time.It is worth noting, however, that the bonus cache will always be a Collection of Chaos, so you wont get to optimise the resulting gear. Still, its a pretty generous bonus that rewards you for what youre already doing.Season 7 has been well received by players so far. While the core changes, features, and new quest have garnered praise, veteran players are even happier about a few undocumented changes that really help improve the games quality of life.

Third VolumeThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return for season 3 at Prime Video, and a big time jump is happeningDark days ahead for both Middle-earth and the anti-woke crowd.Image credit: Prime Video News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power did well enough after convincing most critics last year with its second season, but the lack of post-finale updates on Amazon's big fantasy bet for TV, which has been reported to be ridiculously expensive when compared to other shows, had cast a shadow of doubt over its survival. Now, fans can rest easy. The five-season story arc that's been discussed in the past by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay is said to end with Sauron's defeat at the slopes of Mount Doom. You know, before he became a big spooky flaming eye. Of course, there's still a ways to go, with war in Middle-earth only beginning to heat up by the time season 2 fades to black. Needless to say, cancelling the show at this point and after viewership ratings that, while below season 1's, remain among Prime Video's best would've caused a ruckus online. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It's now been confirmed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that The Rings of Power will return for a third season which will begin shooting this spring at Shepperton Studios in the UK. This signals a slightly quicker pace after season 2 finished airing when compared to season 1, with Payne, McKay, and their writers' room likely putting the finishing touches on the scripts now. A release during the second half of 2026 seems almost assured. Moreover, THR has revealed the show is jumping forward in time, likely to cut out some fluff and get quicker to the big story and character beats at a time when war has spread wider and the situation in Middle-earth is dire. Here's what the press release says: "Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last."International Emmy award nominee Charlotte Brndstrm (Shōgun) is returning to direct season 3 episodes alongside Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time). They're joined by Stefan Schwartz (The Boys). Renowned composer Bear McCreary is expected to continue on board after delivering two standout and hefty original soundtracks for the show so far.

It's the GTA 6 channel on the official Discord server Rockstar Games has just set up and announced midway through its latest Newswire post, and it's - to put it simply - a trip.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "Whether youre coordinating with a Heist crew, organizing a car meet, or putting a team together to take advantage of this weeks Casino Story Mission bonuses, theres no better place to connect with like-minded players than on the newly launched official Rockstar Games Discord," Rockstar wrote of the server's purpose, "Join to keep up with the latest in Rockstar Games news, and use the LFG forums to fill out the ranks of your Association on the platform of your choice."Naturally, in addition to that, the server - which already has just over 140,000 members - is home to an entire channel dedicated to GTA 6 discussion. It currently contains a malestrom of verbal diarrhea that's basically a concentrated form of the likes of the GTA 6 subreddit, and the fifty million Twitter and Facebook comments about GTA 6 that are posted every day. Frankly, it's glorious to behold."Will GTA 6 introduce Sex 2" read one of the first posts I spotted in it, which has since been whisked off into oblivion, as the channel gets a new post literally every 20 seconds or so. So you can get the flavour, here's a 'conversation' that just happened over the past minute:One user: GTA 7 before GTA 6Someone else: ValentinesAnother user: Ne zna ni onSomeone different: Nah this community crazy aslYet another user: BraindeadSomeone that's not the previous five: RICK GRIMESAnother user yet again: gta 6 2026 plzSomeone entirely new: 6Yep, not just a washing machine of words at all.Hey, at least some fans are using the waiting time til fall constructively, doing stuff like having a crack at building GTA 6's map in GTA 5.

Vigilante JusticeArmie Hammer is becoming The Dark Knight for Uwe Boll, and no, that doesn't mean the Batman IP is going down the toilet againI mean, it's already bad out there for the fallen actor.Image credit: Warner Bros. Pictures News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 You might still remember the whole thing that went down with once-acclaimed actor Armie Hammer a few years ago, but that didn't go anywhere in the end. Regardless, the actor's public image and reputation in the Hollywood circles was damaged, and after some time away from the cameras, he's returning to the screen under Uwe Boll's lens with The Dark Knight. No, James Gunn's DC Studios hasn't gone chaotic (yet) and hired one of the modern masters of poopy filmmaking to make his own take on the Caped Crusader, but his new movie is about a vigilante regardless. The story follows Sanders (Hammer), "a man who takes justice into his own hands as he sets out to hunt down criminals." After some time, an Interpol officer (Costas Mandylor) sets his sights on him, and you already know where things go next.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Variety exclusively revealed the details for The Dark Knight on February 12, indicating the movie is currently shooting in Zagreb, Croatia. For Mandylor, this is a second run with Uwe Boll, who's currently also deep into post-production of his previous feature, Run. That one is currently looking for a distributor in the United States.Despite a crushing number of video game-related misfires (on the big and small screens, to be fair), Boll is also reportedly working with relatively unknown developer Polygon Art "to develop a video game based on the movie." If anything, he's confident about what he's cooking and open to have fun with it.Mind you, Boll's career isn't wall-to-wall garbage, and I've stated in the past his completely bonkers Postal adaptation had a few things going for it. Furthermore, he's found relative success away from video game adaptations, with his Rampage movie series and Assault on Wall Street even landing somewhat 'positive' reviews. He ain't slowing down anytime soon, that's for sure, and it'll be interesting to see whether some of that momentum also applies to Hammer's currently deceased acting career. Funnily enough, the actor was at some point suggested as a pretty good option for the role of Bruce Wayne aka Batman, so this outcome feels like a joke that's arriving with delay.

  • Blade and Soul NEO will not be launching on Steam, will be sticking to NCSoft's own platform Purple
    www.vg247.com
PurpleBlade and Soul NEO will not be launching on Steam, will be sticking to NCSoft's own platform PurpleHow big of an impact will this decision have on new player engagement? Time will tell!Image credit: NCSoft Article by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Blade & Soul Neo is a re-release of NCSoft's action MMO, bringing the world back to its original state with a healthy number of quality of life changes and significant gameplay additions to make the whole experience a bit smoother. It's a cool idea, perhaps inspired somewhat by Blizzard's World of Warcraft: Classic, and has certainly convinced me to jump back on board and give the game a try later this month. However, despite what appears to be a grand opportunity to get as many new folks into Blade & Soul as possible, the game will not be launching on Steam. Instead, the game will solely be available on NCSoft's own platform: Purple. This was revealed during a press preview and Q&A held last week, in which NC America's Andrew Long (senior producer) and Andrew Gant (community manager) provided some insight into the game and its goals. The following answers were provided in an interview shortly after that preview. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. VG247: Who is your target audience here?Long: "We want to grab people who maybe played Blade & Soul at launch, who maybe left over the past nine years. So we want to target those users, we have a large user pool too! We also want to target new audiences! We want to get people who've heard about Blade & Soul, but maybve don't know what it is, and want to explore it now. So we want to make sure both Blade & Soul live and Neo are supported, but with Neo tap into lapsed users, new users, anyone who wants to enjoy our product."VG247: Are you concerned at all that this game launching solely on Purple to begin with will hamper the game's ability to reach new or lapsed players?Long: "I think there are unique challenges to having your own launcher. Steam is a juggernaught in the industry, and when we do, we'll reach out over platforms for expansion, areas to grow. So, it's something we're aware of, but we're confident in our launch and plan on Purple."VG247: Would you say that outreach to new audiences is one of the primary challenges with having your own launcher?Long: "Yeah I would say, the product is going to be what's going to draw those users in. They're going to want to play Blade & Soul, they check where it is, they find out it's on Purple. So what is Purple? There is going to have to be an education space there, on how do I make an account, things like that. So there's that one step they're going to have to do, and that can be challenging. But we're ready, we're ready to make as manner introductions into what Purple is, how to use it, and all the cool features on Purple! There are a lot of cool features on Purple that may not be on Steam." Neo is a stunner to be fair, with old zones visually refreshed. | Image credit: NCSoftVG247: I have one final question on Purple. NCSoft launched Throne and Liberty on Steam, but isn't doing it here. I'm curious why there's a difference in strategy between the two games. Obviously, both games would want as many players as possible to jump on board, you guys will have worked hard on Blade & Soul Neo. So why choose just Purple for this?At this point, Douglass Perry (senior director of public relations at NC America) spoke up to provide some additional context to the decision.Perry: "Easy answer. Throne and Liberty is published by Amazon, it's not an NC America game, so it's a different publisher. This publishing team is only a year and a half old, we have a staff of 30-35 people. We're really establishing ourselves as a new publisher. Our mandate from NCSoft is to use the Purple launcher, and as we progress through this year and the next, we'll be looking at all the different platforms we can."VG247: Other Andrew! How do you anticipate the audience will split in Neo between totally new players, and players of Blade & Soul live? Do you think it'll be its own distinct audience, or will it be a mix of players jumping into both games at once? New features, like infinite wind walking, may tempt long time fans over. | Image credit: NCSoftGant: "That's a really good question. I've been blown away by our own community in our Discord and our live player base - they're really passionate. They're excited about Neo, they're still eager to play Live, but will try out Neo for sure. I can't predict whether they'll leave Live behind as they're still so passionate, but of course they're going to try Neo and make their own decision on what version is right for them. The two versions are wildly different, so that's a question that'll be answered shortly.""If we look at the community, a lot of the hype has been from returning users joining our Discord, who maybe tried Blade & Soul back when it launched, have all of these great memories, and they're back to see what this new game is all about. But also, it's been interesting to see a lot of new players who have no idea what Blade & Soul is. So we have a lot of potential with people who missed it [...] There are new generations that have missed it, they weren't here for the beginning of the MMO rise, so it's been important for us to realize there's a massive market for new players as well.""Also, if I may add to the Purple thing, we've been using Purple for a year plus, all three of our games and a mobile game we have all exist on Purple. So it's kind of an old hat for us, but it's getting new features that we're excited to show to a new audience".It's an interesting debate, whether or not to keep your own games on a dedicated launcher to create a hub for fans of NCSoft, while taking into account the potential loss of players that decision may bring. It's especially interesting that Throne and Liberty's PC release and it's initial peak of 333,000 players doesn't appear to have shifted NCSoft's own philosophy when it comes to other MMO releases. That's an audience that Amazon clearly wanted to tap into with its involvement in the release, but given that figure has dropped siginificantly since then to a steady 30-ish thousand concurrent, perhaps there's merit to building your own platform. Would those dedicated Throne and Liberty fans be any less eager if they had to boot up Purple? Something to think about.Nevertheless, Blade & Soul Neo is launching on Purple on February 25. It's not touched on in this interview too much, but the game does really seem like a great jumping on point for those unfamiliar. We'll have another interview feature on Blade & Soul Neo out tomorrow, so keep an eye out if you want to read more about the release.

  • HBO's The Last of Us is "likely" getting four seasons to properly adapt all the happy events from Part II, but plans aren't finished yet

Extended DramaHBO's The Last of Us is "likely" getting four seasons to properly adapt all the happy events from Part II, but plans aren't finished yetNo gut punch left behind.Image credit: HBO News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 HBO's The Last of Us is rapidly approaching its second season, set to arrive in April, and it sure as hell ain't looking like a happy time. Those who have played The Last of Us: Part II know it's a long video game full of twists and gut punches, so it comes as no surprise to hear that the current plan is to make at least two more seasons after this one.The post-apocalyptic saga became much bigger and deeper with the release of the second game in 2020, and season 2 of the show is set to follow the same path after its commitment to fidelity, all while expanding on certain fronts and making a few intelligent tweaks, paid off big time with casual viewers and longtime fans alike. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "We don't have a complete or final plan, but I think it's looking like four seasons. I wouldn't want to confirm that, but it's looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we're done," current HBO drama chief Francesca Orci said (via Deadline).Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, who jointly created and have been shepherding the HBO series, teased the same last year. "We don't think that we're going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we're taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too," Mazin explained.Fans of the games will also be well aware of how the harsh world of The Last of Us is quickly expanded as new factions and several new characters are introduced. While we may not properly meet all of them this season, Orci made sure to highlight how that's a large part of what makes season 2 so interesting: "There's certain elements in terms of the various factions that are competing for survival that reveal themselves as a really intriguing survivalist group, and I think they just have a quality to them that feels distinct in how they present it."We're still waiting for a definitive release date for The Last of Us season 2, but that could change any day now with a proper full trailer that elaborates a bit on the plot and the new relationship dynamics while teasing a bunch of the new threats for the viewers that are going in blind. For TLOU as a franchise, more seasons of HBO's hit series may be the only new addition for what's left of the decade, as Naughty Dog's expansive multiplayer take on the IP was canned in late 2023 and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will keep the studio busy for the foreseeable.

  • Avowed review: the next great cult classic
    www.vg247.com
PILLAR OF FIREAvowed review: the next great cult classicAvowed is unlikely to be marked as a trailblazer, but everything it sets out to do it accomplishes with style and confidence. I expect to many it'll be regarded as a cult classic in years to come. Review by Alex Donaldson Assistant Editor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Role-playing games come in all shapes and sizes, but something I really rather appreciate is when a game in the genre doesnt sweat the gritty stuff. I do respect and enjoy when a game really goes for crafting a world experience, I admit - but sometimes, I just want my RPG fix to come in the form of a truly video gamey video game. Avowed is that - still immersive, but gleefully unashamed of doing whatever it can to shine a light on mechanics first to deliver a fun and memorable world to noodle around in.In a sense, this months release of Avowed thereby pitches it as an interesting antithesis to the recently released and also-excellent Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. These two games represent the two extremes of the western-made RPG lineage - the grit of a real feeling world and this. More joyful, more approachable. Theres serious themes to be found, but at the same time, its just a bloody good romp. I expect this will inspire no small degree of critic and audience division. Some will doubtless find Avowed to be a little bit unserious. But if you embrace what it is presenting, its a total joy. Pretty early on in my playthrough I began to sense a future cult classic, the sort of game that becomes certain players muse, the sort of game that a small subset of people will never shut up about. In a sense, that shouldnt surprise. This is an Obsidian game, and this studio has made rather a lot of games like that. I would kill a man for Alpha Protocol. But lets be clear on something else: this is a tightly-wound, smartly-scoped, polished, balanced game. Theres little in the way of jank here.Alright then, you say. Its good. But what is it? A first glance at a character meandering around a town in first-person will give impressions of an Elder Scrolls style open world RPG. Its a little bit of that, sure, though its also quite deliberately scoped as something a little different - and smaller - than that. Theres not the crazy world persistence of every object being movable or the like, and rather than one huge open world the setting of The Living Lands is carefully segmented into several modestly-specced open zones you freely travel between via a world map, vaguely bringing to mind the world structure of Dragon Age Inquisition. In role-playing terms, its a generous full-fat experience. Avowed is a spin-off of Pillars of Eternity, which is a capital C CRPG - that is to say, a full-on dungeons and dragons-like experience. Youve got the familiar six stats to pump points into on level up, plus three different categories of abilities divided into traditional character classes (Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard). Despite the class system on show with skills, theres no hard class divisions - you choose your starting skills, but you can equip everything and buy any skill you like as you progress. This all leads to a delightfully squishy and flexible approach to character development that I feel engenders exciting role-playing and build construction. I fell in love with the guns of Avowed - great big blunderbuss-style guns that take an age to reload. Theres a primary hand/off hand system, so I settled on a heaving pistol in my right hand and a grimoire in my left. Grimoires allow the casting of magic spells without investing ability points into them, but exactly what spells you have access to are of course limited by the book.Over the course of the game my character began to trend towards a hybrid battlefield control build. I became deeply attached to a specific gun which had some perks I loved, plus a book that gave me spells that could freeze a group of enemies in place with ice and then bounce devastating chained lightning between them. Id do this, then strafe away, firing powered-up shots with my gun. What started out as me picking Ranger at the onset of the game became something very different indeed. If things got dicey, I had backup plans. Your companions, of which two can join you at any given time, have a handful of abilities you can trigger - so I made sure they had skills which helped to draw aggro off me. And if things got really bad, Id drop back to my secondary weapon set - a trusty spear and shield combo. Avowed has a one-click switch between primary and secondary weapon sets in combat, and even has stats and skills that are built to make the switching faster. Obsidians designers knew that some people would make switching weapon multiple times per encounter the centerpiece of their playstyle - and so the flexibility to lean into that system is there. You'll battle against bandits, soldiers, wildlife, lora, fauna, and a variety of species of bear. | Image credit: Obsidian EntertainmentAdd in a low barrier to entry for refunding skill points and respecing your character, and youve got all the makings of a role-playing experience with a wonderful degree of experimentation at its heart. Combine that with the fact that this is generally good-feeling, crunchy-enough action combat for a game that is ultimately driven by numbers, and the point is this: I never got tired of fighting. Theres a whippet-fast energy to combat in this game at its best, where managing the enemies, cooldowns, and your own attributes becomes frenetic and fun. The best sort of combat encounter in Avowed could be summed up as organized chaos, which I love.My approach quickly morphed into aiming to fully explore each new area and attempt to exhaust side quests before even attempting to advance the main narrative. Hunts, which I usually initially enjoy but usually eventually tire of, became and remained an absolute priority. My love of the combat, systems, and RPG mechanics arguably drove the rest of my enjoyment of the game - and I dare say ones opinion of these systems will likely truly define your experience with Avowed.Theres plenty to love here if youre less interested in blasting and casting, though. All I can really say is this - its an Obsidian game, and a good one. This is a studio that knows its way around a story with consequences - and real ones. These guys made Fallout New Vegas, lest we forget. I genuinely agonized over a few choices - which is how it should be.At the start of the game youll pick a character role which will help to frame your place in the world and add new dialogue options. Theres also plenty of speech checks based on your character stat choices. Should you wish, there is plenty of opportunity to through intimidation, compassion, or completionism deescalate tense encounters and solve issues without firing a shot, uttering a spell, or drawing a blade. In a game that trades so heavily on the strength of its combat, this is in fact a little bit brave! The world features more typically medieval locales and some heavy fantasy swings for the fecnes. | Image credit: Microsoft/Obsidian EntertainmentWell-written characters verbally spar and charming companions have fierce and often conflicting opinions on matters. Your character often faces preconceptions and judgement over their status as a Godlike - a fact visible to all. Some will regard you as a savior; others an abomination. Its an interesting story beat, and you have some decent latitude in terms of how you navigate peoples various responses to you.The world itself can feel a touch static when youre meandering through it compared to some rivals. You cant slaughter a town of innocents or get in trouble with the guards. Tossing a grenade in town will just result in it harmlessly going off. NPCs dont have much reaction to you that isnt part of a specific dialogue or quest. This feels cheap, but it also is absolutely in keeping with the stall the game sets out early on: this isnt that sort of RPG. I didnt feel short-changed by this, because narratively theres a hell of a lot going on and some great choice-and-reaction stuff. When youre in a conversation Avoweds Pillars lineage stands tall - it feels more like a slower-paced tactical, story-driven RPG than it does a console-first action combat extravaganza. In fact, probably my only scope-related complaints rest on the companions. Theyre good, charming folk - but I wish there were a little more to do with them beyond conversations at camp - and I wish their ambient dialogue werent so reactive. Crouch for a second, even mid-combat, and someone might go, be quiet as a mouse! because, yep, crouching is often used for stealth. But when my finger brushes C while trying to jump in the middle of an explosive combat encounter were not stealthing, are we, mate? While Im nitpicking, food is key for buffs and health restoration - but the cooking system related to food feels fairly half-baked, if youll excuse the pun, and is far too divorced from RPG systems for my liking - a cooking-related skill wouldve been neat to see.But I digress. Back to what I like: I also think its all rather striking looking. This is a gorgeous world, and though a joined-up approach is sacrificed in favor of the smattering of open zones, the advantage here is that each biome can feel unique. Dawnshore is, I think, one of the strongest first zone, dip-your-toe-in zones Ive experienced in a game of this type. It teaches you the rhythms of picking up quests, of solving cute environmental puzzles with elemental magic, of combat, and of both directed treasure hunt quests and unguided listening for the subtle twinkling noise in the background that indicates that theres a chest of valuable loot nearby. The instincts trained here stick with you for the rest of the game. Charming companions make for not just buddies, but vital combat crutches as well. | Image credit: Obsidian EntertainmentUltimately, Dawnshore will suck you in, but its also gloriously a little bit run-of-the-mill - which means surprises can be saved for more hair-raising areas later. This comes both in story terms, where you travel from more prosperous areas to places shattered by the forces of nature herself - but also in striking visual design and an incredible level of visual polish, especially on a higher-end PC (though the spec requirements are mercifully modest, as this is a game that still needs to run well on Xbox Series S).If I can level a criticism at Avowed, its arguably that it simply is very classic. Theres no reinvention of the wheel here. It brings to mind and was evocative of a similar warmth of some of my favorite role-playing games of eras gone by. Noodling around the open world sort of gave me that fuzzy feeling I most keenly associate with Oblivion - but in a streamlined package. The most revolutionary thing on offer, in a sense, is how the lore and world view of Pillars of Eternity is reinterpreted for this new type of game. These are wildly different products, but they feel utterly cohesive at their heart. In that sense, Avowed is perfect proof of a great proof in all game design and in the execution of all art: you sometimes dont need to pitch a revolution. Instead, you just need to have something to say, and then use the established tools and concepts to say it well. Thats what Avowed is: strong storytelling, great combat, lovely visuals, and utterly charming. Its not going to light everyones hair on fire, but thats fine - because I know for a certain subset of people - refined people of taste, if you ask me - Avowed will enjoy cult classic status. It doesnt necessarily push the envelope, but nor does it need to. Its exactly what it needs to be.

Good question, and one of Dale's viewers asked it during his most recent playing session, specifically broaching the topic of romance options. "Who am I planning on romancing? • Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki confirms that a follow-up is now in pre-production and says he's got no desire to adopt AI anytime soon

Future RoarGodzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki confirms that a follow-up is now in pre-production and says he's got no desire to adopt AI anytime soonOlder technology and techniques still serve him just fine.Image credit: Toho News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Godzilla Minus One, one of 2023's best movies, is getting a follow-up that may or may not be a direct sequel (though we're leaning towards 'yes' after that cliffhanger ending). After a relatively silent 2024, writer-director Takashi Yamazaki has now confirmed he's hard at work on pre-production for the movie and has also shared his thoughts on the matter of AI.Toho's refreshed big-screen efforts around the Godzilla franchise seem to be ramping up, all while its collaboration with Legendary Pictures leads into Monarch season 2 plus the third Godzilla x Kong event movie, set to be released in March 2027. Elsewhere, the most famous kaiju of all time has shown up even in off-beat video games like Dave the Diver. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Via Variety, we've learned about Yamazaki's new comments at the Visual Effects Society Awards. There, he confirmed he's currently working on the screenplay as well as the first storyboards for the next Godzilla movie. Moreover, he explained the budget he and his team are anticipating getting from Toho is expected to be higher than $15 million after Godzilla Minus One earned over $113 million globally just with its theatrical run and before making a splash on streaming services like Netflix. Of course, taking home an Oscar for Best VFX also helps Yamazaki's case.On the matter of AI being integrated into the VFX pipeline, he acknowledged its potential (in fact, it's already been crucial to help figure out and deliver simulations for years), but is also worried about losing "what humans can" generate. With generative AI poisoning the entire AI well, this is a discussion that's been hard to keep track of and navigate, which is why Yamazaki plans to keep things traditional while the new uses of AI are figured out and regulated: "Right now, its not in any of our pipelines because of that reason, but the speed at which AI evolves is just so immense that where it goes from here remains to be seen."He also added, quite diplomatically, that he's a bit of an old-school filmmaker who's "still shooting on film" and likes "to use miniatures," so don't expect him to embrace AI, good or not, anytime soon (if at all): "I'm probably going to be one of the later ones, because I do like working with older technology and techniques."

  • The first Captain America: Brave New World reviews are here, and it's one of the lowest-rated MCU entries so far
    www.vg247.com
Under FireThe first Captain America: Brave New World reviews are here, and it's one of the lowest-rated MCU entries so farExtensive reshoots and rewrites seem to be the least of its problems.Image credit: Marvel Studios News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 As Captain America: Brave New World prepares to land this weekend to quite solid box office projections, critics and influencers aren't too happy with Marvel Studios' latest. The first batch of reviews is plenty divisive, and so far, Anthony Mackie's big-screen debut as the new Captain America is among the MCU's lowest-rated entries with 52% right now.To put things into perspective: 2023's dreadful Secret Invasion limited series ranks above it on Rotten Tomatoes with 53% (just 1% more at the time of writing), and below it we find only Eternals (47%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (46%). Not looking too good there, folks. As always: RT's percentages represent the amount of critics that gave a movie a pass/thumbs-up and aren't an actual average score. Metacritic takes care of that, and, uh, it's sitting at 43 so far based on 41 reviews. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. This disappointing (but somewhat predictable) outcome won't be deterring MCU loyalists from watching the penultimate Phase 5 movie in cinemas, mind you, but it could have an effect on its legs past the opening weekend. In late 2023, The Marvels had the franchise's lowest-ever box office debut, but some diehards were hoping for a prolonged presence at the box office. Instead, the middling-to-negative reception translated into the sequel being blipped out of existence quite soon.So far, critics are underlining a lack of narrative focus and the fact this entry largely feels like a straight sequel to 2008's The Incredible Hulk (really) that happens to feature Sam Wilson as the leading man, all while shoehorning loose plot threads such as the massive Celestial sticking out of Earth after the events of 2021's already-forgotten Eternals adaptation. Of course, rushed CGI and jumpy editing are said to be present too, but it appears the movie's problems run deeper than that. Needless to say, it sounds like it doesn't have a whole lot to actually say about the politics it toys with nor the world we live in.Last year, Deadpool & Wolverine seemingly proved not only that there was plenty of juice left in the Marvel brand, but also that Marvel Studios could push forward with R-rated movies without fearing a box office slump. In fact, the threequel was the best-performing MCU release since 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, many theorised the over-one-billion uptick could be tied to the 'solo' power of the two leading characters versus a sudden surge of interest in the universe after a handful of misfires. Image credit: Marvel StudiosCaptain America: Brave New World's numbers partially support this theory (Captain America and Harrison Ford as Red Hulk are more interesting to the casual viewer than Ant-Man or The Marvels), as the blockbuster could 'make it out alive' with a decent hold into its second and third weekends, especially with the current international projections looking solid too. However, it's hard to see it even nearing the $800 million mark, let alone a hefty $1 billion haul. With Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps' previews sparking more hype than any recent movies (besides the third Deadpool) from the studio, things could be looking up for the franchise ahead of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, but Captain America 4 surely isn't a star-spangled win. What about you? Will you be watching Captain America: Brave New World in theaters this weekend, or are you waiting for the Disney+ release?

  • The Nameless King and older Souls bosses will show up in Elden Ring Nightreign for exactly the reasons you think
    www.vg247.com
Rogue Nameless KingThe Nameless King and older Souls bosses will show up in Elden Ring Nightreign for exactly the reasons you thinkYour first guess about the reason why you're going to be fighting classic Souls games bosses in Elden Ring Nightreign is probably the correct one.Image credit: FromSoftware News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Elden Ring Nightreign is quickly becoming one of the years most anticipated games, and with good reason. But it also represents an entirely new type of game for developer FromSoftware, one that freed it up to try things some would consider sacrilege.Case in point, all the classic Souls bosses fans have spotted in various Nightreign trailers. These are just some of the bosses youll be going up against in the game, of course, but why not just limit the pool to bosses from Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree? To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The answer, somewhat disappointingly, has nothing to do with lore and story. Elden Ring Nightreign game director, Junya Ishizaki, told Gamespot in a new interview that FromSoftware knew fans have favourite bosses from past games, and simply wanted to bring them back, and update them so that players could take them on them again. The primary reason for these existing bosses in Nightreign is from a gameplay perspective, Ishizaki confirmed.Ishizaki also pointed out, as you might have already guessed, that the roguelike format of Nightreign requires a lot of novel content, as players are expected to go through the game multiple times across different in-game days. Thats precisely why FromSoft decided to dig through the archives to see which bosses could work in the new format. We obviously understand that our players have a lot of affection for these characters and they have a lot of fond memories of battling them in these games, so we didn't want to encroach too much on that lore aspect, he added, immediately shooting down all your lore theories. Which reappearance from a past game will be the most surprising? | Image credit: Bandai NamcoOf course, these wont be identical to their counterparts in the original game. Ishizaki explained that some tweaks have been made so they better fit the gameplay of Nightreign. The character freedom and speed in Elden Ring would trivialise many of the classic bosses that struck fear in the hearts of players then, so these new versions will likely be faster and more aggressive to match. But it was more so from a numbers perspective, he added. And just to add to that quickly, also from a personal standpoint, I thought it'd be kind of fun.Elden Ring Nightreign just had its release date confirmed. The game arrives May 30 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. We played it, and Alex had a lot of praise for how well it makes use of its unusual structure and what you can expect when you actually get your hands on it.

  • As Marvel sets shooting dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, you can't help but wonder if it's too little, too late
    www.vg247.com
Doom And GloomAs Marvel sets shooting dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, you can't help but wonder if it's too little, too lateLittle reason to be excited about either of them right now.Image credit: Marvel Studios News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 12, 2025 It sounds like all the shooting dates for the next couple of Avengers films have been decided, though at this point, I'm wondering why anyone still cares. As part of promoting the latest upcoming addition to the MCU, Captain America: Brave New World, Anthony Mackie spoke with Deadline about the experience of making the film alongside an actor like Harrison Ford, but also of the upcoming pair of Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars. Doomsday is obviously up first, currently set to be released May 1, 2026, with a shooting date kicking off in either March or April. "We shoot in London through the summer and then the following summer we shoot the next one [Avengers: Secret Wars]," Mackie explained. "Its going to be a full slate."To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Mackie didn't have much to share by way of casting news, as he claimed to not know apart from Robert Downey Jr. being a part of the movie as Doctor Doom. "I dont know how many are coming back. RDJ made the big announcement that hes coming back. Other than him I dont know who of the original crew will be coming back, but I know he will be. Im excited to be able to go to work with him, go toe to toe with him."The only problem is, will people care as much as they used to? Following Endgame, Marvel has struggled to find the same successes it once had aside from last year's Deadpool & Wolverine, not to mention the reset the MCU had due to the studio dropping the Kang storyline. While I don't personally think the earlier Marvel movies did a perfect job at building towards Infinity War and Endgame (we all remember how ham fisted the Infinity Stones stuff was in Age of Ultron), it was at least building towards something over the years. Right now, though, the MCU doesn't even have a big bad.We can assume that Doctor Doom will be making an appearance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is due out this June 25, but between that, Captain America, and Thunderbolts, there isn't much reason to get excited about a new Avengers film. Guess we'll have to wait and see if these three incoming entries can change that feeling.
