Image: The Pokémon CompanyThe Pokémon Company has revealed that the Pokémon Fossil Museum, a travelling exhibit of Pokémon skeletons and fossils for pudding paleontologists, will be leaving Japan for the first time in 2026. The first exhibit to debut outside of Japan will be at Chicago's Field Museum in Illinois, and is due to open on 22nd May 2026. That gives you a full year to start saving up to visit. The exhibit is a mix of real, "life-size" replicas of Pokémon skeletons and comparisons to real fossils. It'll be up to aspiring researchers to spot similarities and differences between the likes of SUE the T.rex and Tyrantrum or the Archaeopteryx and Archeops. In other words, it's a great way to see how real animals, alive and extinct, serve as inspirations for our favourite Pokémon.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube812kWatch on YouTube The exhibit has been going since 2021 and has been travelling all across Japan since its debut, so it's fantastic to see it finally heading abroad. No end date has been announced yet, but in Japan, the exhibit typically stays around between 1-4 months. While the console’s handheld display supports VRR (variable refresh rate) technology to smooth out inconsistent framerates, the console’s Docked Mode output does not. Just weeks ago, Nintendo removed mentions of VRR support in Docked Mode from its official website for the upcoming console. However, Digital Foundry has now confirmed that developers have been informed of the feature’s absence when connecting the console to a TV. Nintendo Switch 2 loses VRR in Docked Mode In a recent video, Digital Foundry lead Richard Leadbetter confirmed the curious VRR decision in a deep breakdown of the Nintendo Switch 2 components. Backed by a source of developer documentation, it’s stated that the Dock simply doesn’t support VRR. “As far as Switch 2 developers are concerned, VRR, right now at least, is indeed a function of the internal display only and that there is no support at all right now for VRR over HDMI,” Leadbetter explained.” The respected journalist and video games analyst explained that the dock included with the Nintendo Switch 2 might not support the technology due to its older HDMI port. “The best theory that we have for this is that the dock’s Display Port to HDMI connector doesn’t support standard HDMI VRR, but whatever is the cause, we really hope to see Nintendo provide some sort of solution in due course.” With the constrained specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2, VRR support is a fantastic option. As 120Hz screens become more common, 40fps modes are offering great experiences for titles that can’t hit 60fps. For the Switch 2, this type of mode will be possible in Portable Mode, but not in Docked Mode. If this is indeed a hardware issue, the only way to actually bring VRR to Docked Mode would be with a revised dock sometime in the future which would split the user base. Macworld 2027 is the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, and it appears that Apple has some big plans in store. The Information and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple is going to dramatically redesign the iPhone with a mostly glass, curved iPhone (that will follow the release of Apple’s first folding phone). On Wednesday, a report by Electronic Times sheds a little bit of light on the display that will be used. Apple plans to use “four-sided bending display technologies” that would allow the display to wrap around the edges of the iPhone so that the phone would not have a bezel. Apple also plans to implement an OLED display driver chip that is based on a 16nm fin field-effect transistor (FinFET) process, a change from the 28nm planar process currently used. Implementing FinFET will improve power efficiency, but it is not clear if this results in longer battery life or if the power demands of a four-sided bending display and AI processing offset any gains. One way Apple may address the power demands of the new phone is by using new battery technology, according to the Electronic Times report. Current lithium-ion batteries have a graphite anode, but the 2027 iPhone could use a battery with a silicon anode instead. Silicon anodes store more lithium ions, resulting in higher energy density and longer battery power capacity. Previous reports have stated that Apple is making an effort to design this iPhone without any screen cutouts or minimize its use. The Information and analyst Ross Young have previously reported that Apple plans to most of the Face ID sensors underneath the display. The Information has also reported that the phone would have a small cutout for the front-facing camera, a cutout that would be smaller than the pill-shaped one in the current iPhone. It’s not clear whether Apple would still offer the Dynamic Island feature if the camera cutout shrinks.

Archaeopteryx lived about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period. Although the first Archaeopteryx fossil was discovered more than 160 years ago and the prehistoric bird has been well studied, an excellent specimen has yielded new information about the species, including why it could fly so well, according to a report in the journal Nature. Painstaking preparation made the “Chicago Archaeopteryx” (named because it resides in the city’s Field Museum) the best-preserved example of the species. That amount of care meant that CT scans and imaging via UV light have yielded the most vivid Archaeopteryx pictures yet. (Image Credit: Michael Rothman)Seeing Archaeopteryx in such detail revealed a long set of feathers called tertials on the its upper arm. Those feathers also place the species more accurately on the evolutionary tree among winged dinosaurs as well as a predecessor to contemporary birds, which also have tertials. “Archaeopteryx isn’t the first dinosaur to have feathers, or the first dinosaur to have ‘wings,’" Jingmai O’Connor a curator at the museum and an author of the paper, said in a press release. “But we think it’s the earliest known dinosaur that was able to use its feathers to fly.”Ancient FlightThe scientists now think they know why Archaeopteryx was such a good flier. Archaeopteryx’s upper arm bone is much longer than those of contemporary birds. That length creates a gap between the long primary feathers and others, as well as between the wings and the body. Air passing through that gap generates lift. Contemporary birds don’t need such long arms, because evolution solved their need to create lift another way: a set of tertial feathers between the bird’s body and the rest of its wing.“Our specimen is the first Archaeopteryx that was preserved and prepared in such a way that we can see its long tertial feathers,” O’Connor said in the release. “These feathers are missing in feathered dinosaurs that are closely related to birds but aren’t quite birds. Their wing feathers stop at the elbow. That tells us that these non-avian dinosaurs couldn’t fly, but Archaeopteryx could. This also adds to evidence that suggests dinosaurs evolved flight more than once — which I think is super exciting.”Other Bird Evolutionary FeaturesImaging also revealed some other key evolutionary features. For instance, seeing details of the tiny bones in the roof of its mouth are helping scientists understand how modern birds eventually developed the ability to move their beaks independent of the part of the skull that holds their brain.“That might not sound exciting, but to people who study bird evolution, it’s really important, because it’s been hypothesized that being able to evolve specialized skulls for different ecological niches might have helped birds evolve into more than 11,000 species today,” O’Connor said in the release.Also, because the scientists got a detailed look at some of the Archaeopteryx’s soft tissues they hypothesize that it may have spent a lot of time walking on the ground, and may even have climbed trees.The Chicago Archaeopteryx fossil went on display at the Field Museum in 2024. Its tiny hollow bones are embedded in a slab of limestone.
