Posted By Ravi Sinha | On 16th, May. 2025 FromSoftware’s latest trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign introduced us to the Guardian, a Pinionfolk Nightfarer skilled in tanking damage. A follow-up is available outlining his passive, Active Skill and Ultimate Art. Check it out below. If it wasn’t obvious already, the Guardian’s Passive is “Steel Guard,” a powerful stance that’s difficult to break, making him extremely good at defense. Whirlwind is his Active Skill, and not only does it take smaller enemies off their feet, but it can also repel light projectiles. Maybe don’t try it against breath attacks and beams. Finally, there’s his Ultimate Art, Wings of Salvation. The Guardian flies into the air, crashes down and deals damage in a large area. This can “protect allies,” though based on the trailer, it can seemingly revive them if they’re down. Six Nightfarers have been confirmed with the Wylder due next for a trailer. We’ve yet to learn anything about the remaining two, rumored to be the Executor and Revenant, so stay tuned for updates. Steam is shaking things up with a refreshed look for its monthly top-releases chart, now spotlighting the platform’s highest-earning games each month. Users can also browse the top 50 titles going all the way back to November 2004, when Half-Life 2 launched. The new layout features a trailer section that highlights top games one at a time, and a side menu, offering a more dynamic browsing experience. Each chart showcases at least 50 releases, divided into gold (the top 12 highest earning), silver (the following 12), and bronze tiers (the other games), though the total number may vary depending on regional availability. It’s worth noting that new DLC deemed popular enough may also appear in the top 50 of a given month, outside of the new “DLC For You” section, which highlights DLC released in the month for games users play, and new content relevant to their catalog. Previously, users could browse each month’s best-selling titles, but the latest update makes these lists much more detailed and informative. The new side menu offers quick access to live charts, including Top Sellers, Most Played, Top Played on Steam Deck, Weekly Charts, and Monthly Top Releases. The revamped monthly charts focus on the first two weeks of revenue for each new release, organizing them into gold, silver, and bronze tiers. Steam’s charts remain one of the most reliable sources in the gaming industry for insights on sales, player activity, and more. The long-standing Top Sellers chart highlights the platform’s highest-grossing games and tracks their daily shifts in ranking. The Steam team has been manually updating the monthly charts since they first launched in April 2019. Now, the process is automated, ensuring that charts will be released consistently, exactly 14 days after the end of each month, unlike the irregular schedule in the past. News Marathon Uses Decals and Visual Style Stolen From Independent Artist, Confirms Bungie Bungie said that it will be implementing stricter checks to ensure that all artwork used in its assets are attributed correctly. Posted By Joelle Daniels | On 16th, May. 2025 As Bungie gets ready for the September 23 release of its PvPvE extraction shooter Marathon, the studio has found itself embroiled in a new controversy. A visual artist, going by Antireal, has taken to social media platform X accusing Bungie of stealing the artistic style and design elements from projects she had worked on back in 2017. In her post, Antireal said, “the Marathon alpha released recently and its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017.” She went on to say that, while Bungie wasn’t obligated to offer her a job for her design work, the company outright stealing her ideas without appropriate attribution or compensation wasn’t a good thing. “Bungie is of course not obligated to hire me when making a game that draws overwhelmingly from the same design language I have refined for the last decade, but clearly my work was good enough to pillage for ideas and plaster all over their game without pay or attribution,” wrote Antireal. “I don’t have the resources nor the energy to spare to pursue this legally but I have lost count of the number of times a major company has deemed it easier to pay a designer to imitate or steal my work than to write me an email.” “In 10 years I have never made a consistent income from this work and I am tired of designers from huge companies moodboarding and parasitising my designs while I struggle to make a living.” Antireal’s posts are accompanied by a host of images showcasing some of her work, which does bear a striking resemblance to the overall design language we’ve seen from the various trailers and artwork released for Marathon over the last couple of years. Some elements from Antireal’s art seem to be outright lifted and pasted into Marathon, including words like “Aleph” which feature prominently in the artist’s work. In response, Bungie took to X to confirm that Antireal’s work was indeed seemingly used during the development of Marathon. However, the studio notes that this issue was unknown for its art team, and that it is taking investigating how this kind of slip up could happen. Bungie has referred to the use of Antireal’s work in Marathon’s textures an “unauthorised use of artist decals.” “This issue was unknown by our existing art team, and we are still reviewing how this oversight occurred,” wrote the studio. “We take matters like this very seriously. We have reached out to [Antireal] to discuss this issue and are committed to do right by the artist.” “As a matter of policy, we do not use the work of artists without their permission.” Bungie has also said that, moving forward, it will be conducting a thorough review of its in-game assets to ensure that there are stricter checks to document artist contributions. “We value the creativity and dedication of all artists who contribute to our games, and we are committed to doing right by them,” it wrote. “Thank you for bringing this to our attention.” Marathon is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and is currently undergoing playtests. The XR Interaction Toolkit (XRI) is a high-level, component-based interaction system for creating VR and AR experiences. It provides a common framework for interactions and streamlines cross-platform creation. This update adds three key features: eye gaze and hand tracking for more natural interactions, audiovisual affordances to bring interactions to life, and an improved device simulator to test in-Editor. To help you get started, let’s explore each addition in more detail.For a more in-depth breakdown of the update, check out what’s new in XRI 2.3, or explore the sample project.XR developer and founder of LearnXR.io, Dilmer Valecillos, has put together an awesome video tutorial on XRI 2.3:Along with XRI 2.3, we’re shipping the Unity XR Hands package in prerelease. XR Hands is a new XR subsystem which adds APIs to enable hand tracking in Unity. It includes built-in support at release for OpenXR, with support for Meta platforms soon to follow. In addition, external hardware providers can pipe in hand-tracking data from their existing XR SDK by following the provided API documentation.This release of XRI includes the Hands Interaction Demo, a sample package showcasing a hand interaction setup where you can switch between hands and controllers without changing anything in your scene on-device. Using this functionality, your content may start with a standard controller setup, but transition seamlessly to hands for specific tasks or natural interactions in gameplay.XRI 2.3 also supports natural poking interactions through the XR Poke Interactor. This allows you to poke using hands or controllers on 3D UI or XRI-enabled UGUI Canvas elements.New headsets like the HoloLens 2, Meta Quest Pro, and PlayStation® VR2 include sensors to track where users are looking. Gaze-based interactions can help you build XR apps that feel more natural and provide an additional way to engage with content. To support this type of interaction, we have introduced the XR Gaze Interactor, driven by eye-gaze or head-gaze poses. You can use this interactor for direct manipulation, like hovering or selecting by dwelling on interactables.Since we generally don’t recommend that apps be controlled entirely with eyes, we have introduced an additional form of controller and hand-based interaction assistance to help users select specific objects: the XR Interactable Snap Volume. This component complements the gaze interactor, as it allows for snapping interactions to a nearby interactable when aiming at a defined area around an object. Snap volumes can also be used without the gaze interactor to enable easier object selection for users.Tobii, a global leader in eye-tracking technology, assisted with the concepts and research. If you’re interested in learning more, you can browse their knowledge base of eye-tracking concepts.Using hands for interaction is different from using controllers in that there’s no haptic or tactile feedback to confirm when an interaction takes place. The affordance system, a set of performant components that animates objects or triggers sound effects in reaction to an object’s interaction state, helps mitigate this feedback gap. This system is built to work with any combination of interactor and interactable in both new and existing projects.The new XR General Grab Transformer reduces the complexity of the hierarchy and allows one general-purpose transformer to support both single and two-handed interactions on an interactable, rather than multiple grab transformers. It also enables two-handed scaling, letting you scale objects up and down by moving your hands apart or together, similar to zooming in and out on a mobile phone.We’ve also added an Interaction Group component. This behavior allows a developer to group interactors together and sort them by priority, which allows only a single interactor per group to interact at a given time. For example, when a Poke, Direct, and Ray Interactor are grouped together, poking a button will temporarily block the other interactors from interacting with the scene. This can keep you from accidentally grabbing something nearby when you’re working in the distance, and prevents rays from shooting into the scene while you’re grabbing or poking an object up close.Testing XR apps on a headset is important, but testing in-Editor helps reduce iteration time. In this release, the XR Device Simulator received a major usability update with a new onscreen UI widget that makes it easier to see what inputs drive the simulator, and which ones are currently active.New simulation modes have also been added so you can toggle between commonly used control modes. At startup, the device simulator activates the new first-person shooter (FPS) mode, which manipulates the headset and controllers as if the whole player was turning their torso. You can then cycle through the other modes to manipulate individual devices: the headset, the left controller, and the right controller. To use the XR Device Simulator, import the sample from the Package Manager.It’s been a long time coming, and our updated sample project is finally here. It showcases the array of XR experience building blocks you can use in XRI 2.3. The project is divided into stations that help you understand how each major feature of XRI works, and includes both simple and advanced examples for each. Nintendo Switch 2 Might Not Have Reviews on Launch Day – Rumour Publications have gotten word from Nintendo that they will not be sent Switch 2 review units until close to launch due to a day-one update. According to The Game Business, editors for several publications were told by Nintendo that, because of a big day-one firmware update for the console, the company will not be sending out review units of the Switch 2 until just a little bit before launch day. This has prompted quite a few editors to talk about their frustrations about the situation, with one pointing out that getting a Switch 2 so close to launch will also cause extra pressure on the publication because it will also be covering Summer Game Fest. “It’s really frustrating,” said the editor. “We will need to cover Switch 2 while also working across Summer Game Fest. How are we supposed to do that?” Another editor brought up the fact that the few lucky people out there who can get their hands on a Switch 2 early thanks to some retailers breaking street dates will end up with an advantage in this regard. This problem will also be further amplified by the fact that there will likely be stock shortages for the Switch 2 on launch, preventing many from legitimately getting their hands on the console. “Anyone who can get hold of a console early from a dodgy retailer will have a head start in terms of coverage,” they said. “I know the console will be sold out at launch, but what about all the other games?” Gaming development and publishing companies are also not happy about industry critics not getting the console early, since it will prevent them from benefiting from releasing “something special” in time for the console’s launch. Described as being something for Switch 2 players that might “want something else in addition to Mario Kart [World]”, the head of a PR department mentioned that “the lack of a independent critical validation is going to make it very hard for us. Maybe we would have been better off waiting a few weeks.” During Nintendo’s earnings report earlier this month, president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the company is predicting that it will sell 15 million Switch 2s over the year. Along with this, Furukawa also said that the company forecasts 45 million sales of software units. He also spoke about the relatively modest sales forecasts for the console, saying that the company’s focus is to “quickly popularise” the Switch 2 first. At this time, the top priority is to quickly popularize the Switch 2 hardware,” said Furukawa. “If the assumptions regarding tariffs change significantly, we would like to consider what price adjustments we should make and implement them after considering various factors.” In a Q&A part of the earnings report, Furukawa also revealed that the modest sales forecasts come down to the fact that the Switch 2 and its games will be more expensive when compared to the console’s predecessor. “Since the Switch 2 is priced higher than the original Switch, we recognize that there will be considerable hurdles in achieving the console’s widespread adoption in the early stages,” he said.
