But tech was still a niche hobby back then. Even in college in the late 1990s and early 2000s, many of my friends got by just fine without computers. For people in college now—namely, my students—things are decidedly different. Gadgets are everywhere, and are increasingly designed to insert themselves into every aspect of our consciousness, colonizing every spare moment of our time and attention. Gen Z and Gen Alpha have never known a world without mini-computers within arm’s reach. They learned to relate to the world through gadgets, to turn to them for everything from entertainment to education to escape. And when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their lives, it took away even more of their access to the offline world, making tech feel paradoxically both like a lifeline and a prison.It's easy to call young people “screenagers” and blame them for being glued to their devices. But I know better. My students feel conflicted; they know they’re hooked, and they worry for their younger siblings who seem even more in the grip of all-consuming tech. It was an experiment both for them and for me: What happens when we remove the barrier tech has put between us and other people, between us and our own thoughts? What does that teach us about how to handle the explosion of hype around generative AI?How I went from gadget geek to tech skepticMy own journey with tech predates our always-on devices, way back to that old Atari. I had always been a little obsessed with gadgets, and when I bought my first iPhone in 2008, it was almost a religious experience.My wife and I were living in New York City, and my entire family drove down from Boston to witness my initiation. Like pilgrims, we journeyed together to the flagship Apple Store on Fifth Avenue. We all stood in reverence at the foot of the spiral staircase, beneath the illuminated glass cube, as I was welcomed into the cult of Apple.From then on, almost without fail, I’ve upgraded my phone annually, a September ritual as cyclical for me as going back to school. And it wasn't just the iPhone; I had the first or second iteration of the iPad, AirPods, and the Apple Watch, too. Back then it felt like Steve Jobs might announce something that would reshape the world every time he stepped on stage.But in the 2010s, something started to change. Underwhelming new tech releases grew increasingly common, and the constant hype around them began to feel empty and manipulative. As both a college professor and a parent, I began to see the benefits of our always-connected devices becoming overshadowed by the negatives. The young people in my life are obsessed with their gadgets, legitimately afraid they’ll be disconnected from society if they aren’t extremely online, and they hate it. So, even before the hype that greeted the AI revolution of the last few years, I’d begun to look a lot more skeptically at claims that tech was changing our lives, and that more apps, devices, or wearables were automatically better.What happens when we turn off the tech?One day, near the end of the spring semester in 2019, I looked out at my class to see rows of students focused intently… on their laptop screens. They presumably had their devices out to take notes, but I wasn’t lecturing. I was trying to lead them into a discussion. This moment for me is trapped in time: It was the moment I decided I had to take drastic measures to recapture my students’ attention.The following fall, my syllabus included a new section, which has remained in place since. I call it my in-class technology use policy and it begins, “This class is a laptop/mobile phone/tablet/headphone/AirPods-free zone. Bring a notebook and pens to each class.” I explain my reasoning and, like a good academic, cite my sources. I provide exceptions for emergencies, explaining that if a student has to take an urgent call, they can quietly slip out of the classroom to do so without judgment or penalty. That first fall, I was nervous. Would they go along with it? Would my classes, previously well-loved, suddenly struggle to fill? To my great relief there was no significant pushback, no mass exodus. Going tech-free is still a shock, to be sure.I begin most classes by distributing an article to read—often a recently-published opinion piece—printed on paper. I encourage students to read it with pen in hand, marking it up as they go. As they read quietly, I look around the room at a group of so-called screenagers concentrating, without a device in sight. When they finish reading, they open their notebooks and write a response, by hand. In those first few weeks, I often see students massaging their palms, sore from lack of practice. After they write for five minutes or so, I open a discussion on what we just read and, distraction-free, the students engage. In those discussions, I love that my students are actually paying attention to one another when they speak. Not everyone of course; some look sleepy and bored, but even that is better than distracted. I call this productive boredom: Without a phone or laptop to divert them, there is little left to do other than sit with their thoughts. What a gift. I ask them, “When was the last time your only task was to think?”Lessons for the AI invasionThis experiment with a device-free classroom has also shaped my response to the AI revolution (I sometimes think of it more as an AI invasion)I’m not a luddite: I continue to be as curious about new technologies as ever. As soon as it came out, I peppered ChatGPT with questions to see if it could imitate my writing style. (It kind of can!) And I know there’s no going back; whether we like it or not, AI will be a significant presence in our lives, and I see it as my job to teach students how to use it responsibly. In my long journey with tech, I’ve learned that we can incorporate devices into our work without surrendering to marketing hype and manufactured FOMO. As a writing professor, my job is to convince students that, as William Zinsser wrote, “writing is thinking on paper.” The process of writing — not the final product — is what sharpens our logical reasoning and self-expression. For students who don’t use AI in smart ways, the result is essays that are all product, no process — and no process means no real learning. In my classes, students glimpse a time before they were born, when fewer distractions inhibited learning, when sitting with one’s thoughts—and, yes, being bored—could be productive and creative. I’m reminded, too, of why I love teaching, for the magic that happens when 20 people sit together in a room attending to one another and talking about ideas. When we leave the classroom, we’ll go back to our devices, and even to our new AI tools. But hopefully the time away from them reminds us we have the power to keep tech in its place—and gives us a taste of what only human minds can do. Jonathan D. Last Thursday, my co-instructor and I showed up to the Data Visualization course we teach at the University of Washington with a bag of rocks. The bag consisted of a fairly diverse collection that I myself put together across a set of treks in various regions of California. Our students are fairly used to the quirky, hands-on activities we ask them to participate in most classes, but this seemed a bit out there, even for us. In this article, I’ll focus on the following two points, which collectively speak to the importance of domain-specific integration into data science Education: A description of the actual task we had students do with these rocks. A deep dive into the discussion that followed—which largely focused on the point of making them do this and its deeper connections to data science. What to Do with a Bunch of Rocks? Once the students were seated in their respective groups, we asked them to do the following: Choose two rocks per group. Attempt to formally identify the rocks without the aid of any internet or mobile apps. At this point, most students made it as far as determining if a rock appeared to be igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic. Refine their initial guesses by now taking advantage of their electronic resources. Students now got much more specific, identifying scoria, slate, red jasper, gneiss, and a host of other rocks in the collection. Design and implement a chart (using software or on paper) that either compared the qualities of their rocks or displayed engaging information about one of them. They were encouraged to search online for supporting data, such as hardness, mineral makeup, potential uses, and so on. Once finished, they submitted their visualizations to us, and we proceeded with a class discussion. What Do Rocks Have to Do With Data Science? Quite a bit, as it happens. As we went around the room, students shared a host of insights about their various rocks. In many cases, the discussion focused on the utility of a particular visual approach students had taken. For example, one group chose to compare their two rocks via a data table that included various points of relevant information. This led to a discussion on how data tables are in fact a type of data visualization, especially useful in two situations: When you have a limited amount of data When it is important that the user be able to pick out precise pieces of data for their purposes Other conversations revolved around the effectiveness of area as an encoding, the particularities of color scales, and so on. All standard discussions for a data visualization course. Once we finished this initial conversation, I posed a more involved question for the class: “So far, we’ve talked about standard visual elements of a chart. We could have discussed these with any kind of data. So why go to the trouble of bringing a giant bag of rocks to the class and asking you to identify them? What’s the point?” The class stared blankly. The moment dragged. Then, one student hesitantly raised his hand. “Um … so we can get comfortable working with unfamiliar domains, or something like that?” Precisely! We’d mentioned this point sparingly to the students before, but this activity really drives the point home. As eventual designers and engineers working in data visualization—and, more broadly, in data science, it is essential for these students to know how to work with domains they may be unfamiliar with. The same goes for you if you are reading this article. As the data expert on a team, you will rarely also be the domain expert, and you must adjust to the data given to you. Sometimes quite quickly. In a previous article, “The Three Building Blocks of Data Science,” I dove into this point in greater detail. The first two building blocks—statistics and computer science—are incredibly important. That said, the actual data comes from the domain. Without the domain, there would be no need for data science. As a data scientist, while you will have the support of a domain expert, you will still need to design solutions and write code corresponding to data you may be deeply unfamiliar with. As such, it is incredibly important to gain exposure to this reality as part of one’s data science education. My co-instructor and I teach in a design and engineering department, with students largely interested in pursuing fields such as UI/UX research and data engineering. We chose to make them work with rocks precisely because we knew they were unlikely to know too much about them (at least at the level of detail needed) beforehand. And that lack of prior knowledge made all the difference. Final Thoughts If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’re training to be a data scientist, or interested in doing so. Perhaps you already are one and are just rounding out your knowledge. Whatever your position may be, my point remains the same: Every chance you get, expose yourself to new data. By its very nature, literally every field, every discipline, every topic known to man has some kind of data, and an associated group of people interested in gaining insights about it. My name is Kaylynn, and I joined Unity as a member of the Diversity Recruiting team in 2022 as a project coordinator. My first priority was to head our conference engagements for the year. While I was initially nervous to lead such an important project, I am very happy to have done so alongside an amazing team, and am excited to share a behind-the-scenes recap of our recruiting travels.To kick off our first in-person conference of the year, members of the University Recruiting team and I headed to Washington, D.C., in September for the Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in Information Technology’s Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference. The Tapia Conference was a great experience and held true to its 2022 theme, “A Time to Celebrate!” Attendees included undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and professionals in computing from all backgrounds and ethnicities. This was my first in-person recruiting event coming out of the pandemic and my first with Unity overall. I can still remember experiencing jitters before we opened our booth on the first day, but the University team brought me up to speed fast, which boosted my confidence in speaking to students about our internship programs.Looking back at my time at Tapia, my favorite memories come from the engagement opportunities – connecting with others over common backgrounds, ethnicities, disabilities, and genders. Our team really did a great job in fostering the opportunity to develop relationships with candidates that extended beyond the conference itself.At the end of September, I joined several other Unity representatives in Orlando, Florida, for the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC). While I have been to many recruiting events before, I had never been to a conference as big as this one. In 2021, GHC virtually hosted 29,000 people, and holds the record for the world’s largest gathering of women in computing.During our time at the conference, our recruiters had a lot of early mornings and late nights but, nonetheless, it was always fun. We usually started our day at 8:00 am sharp, when we could be spotted running to the shuttle stop to make it to the convention center on time.During the day, attendees could find the smiling and welcoming faces of our team at the booth, talking to potential candidates about the business and open opportunities. The career fair closed each evening at 5:00 pm; however, because we had so many candidates who wanted to speak with us, we would usually stay for an extra 30–45 minutes. Other conference events included participating in onsite internship interviews led by our University team or volunteers from across Unity. Having volunteers available allowed us to carry out all interviews and, later, make some internship offers.Although GHC was full of long days and nights, it was one of my favorite conference engagements because of the talent and drive evident in the room. It was rewarding to connect with so many candidates who were really excited to talk about Unity and eager to show us the projects they have built or are working on with our software.A second reason I enjoyed GHC was due to it being my first chance to meet all my wonderful teammates in person. These days, since we primarily meet and chat virtually, it was nice to see each other in person. The conference gave us the chance to spend five days working together and getting to know one another.In November, my team, our inclusion partners, and ComUnidad – the Latinx Employee Resource Group (ERG) – members packed our bags and headed to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the annual get-together of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). At the SHPE 2022 National Convention, we met hundreds of candidates from the Latinx community and created relationships with these prospective candidates for upcoming programs.With more than 13,000 students and professionals attending the event, we spoke to many aspiring engineers from different specialties. At the time, I was unaware that there were so many different types of engineering. Other than meeting so many talented engineers, networking, and giving out cool swag at the booth, our team also participated in onsite interviews, which – much like the other events – allowed us to speak to many candidates and, ultimately, make some internship offers.During my time at the booth, candidates shared their interests, projects, and career goals, and it was exciting to hear stories about how their persistence and hard work got them to where they are today. Seeing undergraduate and graduate students juggling finding internships at conferences on top of their busy school and home lives made me feel very proud of all those attending.A week after we wrapped up at SHPE, we headed to Austin, Texas, for Blavity Inc.’s AFROTECH Conference. AFROTECH is known for being the place for all things Black in tech and Web3, and was quite different from our other in-person engagements in 2022. This was because we were not only there to recruit, but we also participated in two additional conference activations: hosting a learning lab and an event in our Austin office.On the Monday, we started with a career fair, which included several team members from Recruiting and B-United – the Black ERG – helping out at the booth. We spent three days speaking to both internship candidates and advanced professionals and tech entrepreneurs.On the second day, Unity hosted a learning lab that showcased our real-time 3D capabilities. As part of the lab, an expert panel featured Unity’s Raymond Graham, Krystal Cooper, and Nick Straughn. Over 300 attendees packed the workshop to engage with our experts and learn more about the panelists’ respective career journeys.On the final day, we wrapped up our AFROTECH activations with an in-office Unity @ AFROTECH event. Unity for Humanity grantee Black Terminus AR joined us, and its founder Damien McDuffie wowed the crowd with an interactive VR exhibit. The in-office event was one of my favorite parts of this conference because it gave such a personal touch to the week. As a company, we were able to connect with candidates and creators on a more intimate level in our cool workspace.Throughout 2022, our team attended and represented Unity at seven virtual or in-person diversity recruiting engagements. In addition to the conferences I shared above, we participated in the National Society of Black Engineers’ annual convention, Latinx in Gaming’s CONEXION, and three QueerTech activations.During my time as a coordinator on some of these projects, I traveled to places I’d never been before, worked with amazing team members, and met candidates with great passion for technology and Unity.While our diversity recruiting approach at Unity includes many additional strategies to build relationships with candidates traditionally underrepresented in tech, I really enjoyed being able to create sustainable relationships with candidates face-to-face during my first year on the team.As we know, it is hard to be what you can’t see. At Unity, this means that showing up to events like these, with representation as a focus, helps us connect with candidates we might never have had the chance to get to know. Ever since Google teased the Android XR in December, users have been intrigued by more details about the extended reality devices. At I/0 2025, Google gave a clearer picture of the Android XR glasses and the capabilities they would be packed with. The tech giant elaborated that the mixed reality glasses running Android will feature microphones, cameras, and speakers to carry out the intended functionality. Google finally demoed the Android-powered XR glasses, and it is letting users control how immersive the experience would be Google talked majorly about the AI advancements and features it has packed up for this year at the I/O event today and also let on about the future direction it has set for itself in advancing further in the technology, but that was not all the tech community was looking forward to as the Android XR glasses also had everyone hooked. Google offered a deep look into the Android XR glasses and how they can be used in our everyday lives to make daily tasks and functions more seamless. The glasses are designed in a way that they can be used alongside your smartphone, allowing you to engage in a hands-free experience without taking your phone out of your pocket. With the help of these XR glasses, you can have more natural and integrated integrations and even make use of the in-lens display, although that is optional. To bring these Android XR glasses to life, Google is getting on board with brands such as Warby Parker and Gentle Monster that can help not only present the glasses as tech products but also something you can use as everyday wear and look trendy. The tech giant is pushing for a design that helps blend seamlessly and can help the device become more desirable. The XR glasses are not just highly interactive but contextually aware, allowing for voice commands, real-time navigation, and even recalling things seen. Google is also further going ahead in its collaboration with Samsung as it is now stepping beyond headsets and including XR glasses as well. This would help boost the XR ecosystem and the developers would be able to access the platform later this year. The company took its chance to highlight how it is yet testing and collecting feedback and is increasingly committed to refining experiences. Additionally, the tech giant is teaming up with XREAL to develop the second Android XR device. While Project Moohan is still on track and coming out later this year, these collaboration efforts do highlight its commitment to expanding the XR devices further. Deal of the Day

What defined the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 experience for you? Was it being immersed in a reactive world where every action, from committing crimes to doing laundry, felt significant? Encountering well-realized characters with complex motivations and goals? Getting down in the mud with Henry but eventually going on to larger-than-life scenarios? Maybe even roaming the gorgeous landscape, taking in the sights, engaging in desperate combat against bandits and soldiers alike, and building out your version of Henry. With other aspects doubtless contributing, the answer could very well determine how much you enjoy Brushes With Death, the developer’s first story DLC for the title. We’ve seen the addition of Barber Mode, Hardcore Mode, and even Horse Racing via free updates, but what does the developer bring to the table in terms of new stories and quests? The answer: A significant amount, that too at a fairly low price, even if the stakes are non-existent and don’t really matter in the long run. "When you’ve crafted such an epic narrative spanning multiple cities and battles, culminating in incredible fashion, where could a DLC story slot in?" The story sees Henry running into a mysterious person tied to a tree in the woods, seemingly conversing with a painted skull. After intervening and keeping him from becoming wolf chow, the latter introduces himself as Voyta, a painter. He had his brushes stolen thanks to two shifty individuals and subsequently requests Henry to retrieve them in a non-violent fashion. And Henry, being the do-gooder that he is, obliges. However, the individuals in question have a different story about their encounter with Voyta, and it quickly becomes clear that there’s more going on than meets the eye. Why does he talk to the painted skull? Who does the skull belong to? Why does he want Henry to investigate some locations, and why does he become progressively more disturbed? How does he know about the Skalitz-born hero? Is this another deception or a play at something bigger? Over time, Voyta’s nature shifts from playfully coy to enigmatically conflicted, as if he’s fighting against something and doubtful about dragging you along for the ride. Naturally, you have to find out why, and maybe help him resolve some personal demons in the process. However, as intriguing as the mystery surrounding the painter may be, the emotional pay-off just doesn’t quite hit, especially when measured against the rest of Henry’s journey and the conflicts he’s embroiled in. This is a deeper issue with video games in general. There isn’t a single right answer, but some developers work well at creating new tales with varying degrees of scale and drama to complement the main narrative. See The Witcher 3’s Hearts of Stone or Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty. "There’s plenty of gravitas – it’s just that the overall plot lacks weight. Credit where it’s due to the development team, though, for delivering some top-notch dialogue." Brushes With Death opts to tell a smaller, self-contained and personal story hinging on one man’s moral dilemmas. However, it would probably help if some of the “revelations” had any meaningful impact on your journey or if Henry’s involvement amounted to “more or less along for the ride.” When it comes to the actual steps in the questline, they’re pretty much what you’ve always done while wandering the gorgeous Bohemian landscape. Go from one location to the next, either delivering items, fighting bandits, collecting materials or talking to people. There is some nuance to these steps. One of the two aforementioned individuals can be challenged to a game. But if you get frustrated, and rightfully so, you can slaughter him and his buddy and take the items off their corpses. Whether you tell Voyta the truth later or lie about it is up to you, and your reputation is affected accordingly. Another quest step involves meeting an old lady. Her memory isn’t what it used to be, and you can either harangue her to focus or do everything that her deceased spouse would do to jog her memory. Even if the individual steps of picking Valerian flowers, repairing her dress, and reciting poetry (sometimes badly, depending on your stats) are nothing unique, it does make for a cute side quest and an additional wrinkle to the mystery. Of course, the follow-up steps of investigating three separate spots on the map are more in line with your average open-world exploration without anything special. There’s plenty of gravitas – it’s just that the overall plot lacks weight. Credit where it’s due to the development team, though, for delivering some top-notch dialogue. Henry’s exasperation and growing uncertainty with each step offer genuine moments of levity and intrigue, backed by the ever-incredible voice-acting. Voyta is also a compelling character, and the slow dropping of his walls to reveal more of what’s paining him is interesting to behold. Leveraging your skills to draw out responses is also notable if only to unravel his various layers. Brushes With Death also doesn’t rush its conclusion, offering a long enough questline and character arc to fully realize Voyta’s story. It doesn’t measure up to the base game’s very best by a long shot, but it’s not a terrible complement to everything else going on, even if I wasn’t completely sold on his burgeoning friendship with Henry. "Brushes With Death can take anywhere between seven to ten hours. While that means significant back and forth between locations, even while fast-traveling, and completing seemingly menial tasks, it also translates into plenty of interesting conversations and well-voiced characters." Also, on the plus side, the DLC offers a new cosmetic system – the ability to paint your shield. This may seem initially trivial, but the customization is fairly in-depth, as you select a pattern, two colors, a symbol category, and finally, a design. If you’ve ever wanted the image of Mutt carrying a fish with legs or the signature battle hare to be the last thing your enemies ever see, then there’s plenty of fun to be had. Best of all, it’s free, and you can change your shield’s design anytime. Brushes With Death can take anywhere between seven to ten hours. While that means significant back and forth between locations, even while fast-traveling, and completing seemingly menial tasks, it also translates into plenty of interesting conversations and well-voiced characters. It’s definitely worth picking up alongside Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, especially if you’re diving into the open-world action RPG for the first time. However, you might want to wait for the developers to issue some fixes since the latest patch introduced a few texture glitches. Though I didn’t find it particularly rampant during my time with the DLC, it was noticeable enough during some scenes. With how successful Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has been, and how the story effectively ends Henry’s journey, I’m interested to see what the other two DLCs – Legacy of the Forge and Mysteria Ecclesia – have to offer. If they can deliver some new mechanics that enrich the overall experience and maybe some notable, if ultimately inconsequential, stories, then it would only make for a better overall game, even if it’s the core that should demand your time and attention above all else. One of Jupiter’s most recognizable attributes is its sheer size. With a diameter over 88,800 miles, our solar system’s largest planet is 11 times as wide as Earth and twice as massive as all its sibling planets combined. But according to recent calculations based on some of the gas giant’s tiniest moons, astronomers now believe Jupiter was once more than double its current size, with a magnetic field 50 times as strong. These gargantuan dimensions aren’t only impressive—they played a major role in shaping our solar system as it exists today. The new findings are detailed in a study published on May 20 in the journal Nature Astronomy.  To better understand Jupiter’s primordial stages, researchers turned to the tiniest of the planet’s 92 known moons. Almathea and Thebe respectively circle Jupiter at slightly tilted orbits roughly 112,400 and 138,000 miles above the planet’s cloudtops.  By analyzing the dynamics of these orbital discrepancies along with the planet’s conservation of angular momentum, the team could estimate its radius and interior state at about 3.8 million years after the solar system formed its first solids. At that time, the sun was surrounded by a disk of material known as a protoplanetary nebula that was gradually dissipating as it coalesced into the planets we know and love. Based on their calculations, researchers believe early Jupiter was 2 to 2.5 times larger than it is today with a much more powerful magnetic field. “It’s astonishing that even after 4.5 billion years, enough clues remain to let us reconstruct Jupiter’s physical state at the dawn of its existence,” said Fred Adams, one of the study’s co-authors and a University of Michigan professor of physics and astronomy. By focusing on the directly measurable information from Jupiter’s moons and the conservation of its angular momentum, the team was  able to sidestep many of the common uncertainties that plague planetary formation models. These often require astronomers to make assumptions about variables like gas opacity, accretion rate, and heavy element core mass. According to the team, their new calculations enhance more than experts’ understanding of Jupiter. These factors can be applied to the evolution of other giant planets as they circle stars. They also suggest that gas giants generally form through core accretion–or when a gas rapidly gathers around a core of ice and rock. “Our ultimate goal is to understand where we come from, and pinning down the early phases of planet formation is essential to solving the puzzle,” said Konstantin Batygin, a Caltech planetary science professor and study co-author. “This brings us closer to understanding how not only Jupiter but the entire solar system took shape.” The post Jupiter was once twice as large as it is today appeared first on Popular Science.
