PS6 is Sony’s chance to wipe the slate clean and forget the PS5 ever happened – Reader’s Feature GameCentral Published May 18, 2025 1:00am Will the PlayStation 6 be a continuation or a change of direction? (Sony/Metro) A reader tries to be optimistic that the PS6 will be a chance for Sony to change direction and put the mistakes of the PS5 behind it. I remember when the future of video games was just a question of how good the graphics were going to be. Nowadays, it’s worrying that developers die of old age before finishing their games (literally with Kojima) and hoping there’s still a market for the games you like and not just endless live service cash grabs. PlayStation 5 has beaten the Xbox Series X/S so easily this generation that Microsoft has all but given up making consoles, but it doesn’t feel like a victory. Sony has spent the majority of the PlayStation 5’s life trying and failing to make live service games. The only hit they’ve had is the only one they didn’t make themselves and everything else has either been a flop, has been cancelled, or still isn’t out (and is probably about to get cancelled). Now we hear the first rumours about the PlayStation 6 and a portable device, and I just hope that they’re going to use that as a way to draw a line under the PlayStation 5 and promise to never do anything like that again. The latest rumour for the PlayStation 6 also suggested that a third Horizon Zero Dawn game might be a launch title for it. I’ve no strong feelings about that either way but I am at least relieved that they seem to be starting off with a proper game and not the multiplayer spin-off or Concord 2 or something. But the problem is the PlayStation 5 started off fine, it had a good launch line-up and the first two years were exactly what you’d expect. It’s only after that, when game budgets rose and Sony realised it made more money from microtransactions than games, that that the problems came. If you get a hit live service game then it’s a licence to print money, if people are also buying skins and cosmetics at the same time. But it’s like winning the lottery; you’ve got a very low chance of getting a hit and if you don’t win you lose the money you paid to play in the first place. I find it interesting that Microsoft, who are super rich, have relatively little interest in live service games but Sony, who are a normal company, are obsessed with it. And are still obsessed with it, despite knowing their core fans hate it and that it’s not working, in the most public and embarrassing way possible. But as has been pointed out recently they’re not doing it because of us, they’re doing it to impress investors, who care nothing about games, just the infinite profit dream that is a successful live service game (never mind that nothing lasts forever, as Apex Legends is proving at the moment). What I hope, and perhaps I’m being naïve, but what I hope is that the PlayStation 6 will be the point at which everything changes again. Sony can switch tracks, back to how they used to be, and forget all the current mistakes. More Trending I don’t know how likely that is but strangely the idea of a portable gives me hope. You can’t release that and hope for it to be a success just by playing live service games on it, it’s got to have proper games. That’s the way I see it anyway, and I hope Sony does too. NetherRealm Studios’ brand is bloody fighting games, though in 2013, it toned down the violence a tad for Injustice: Gods Among Us. Based on the title, it may not have been even totally clear to Mortal Kombat fans that it was a fighting game starring DC Comics heroes and villains, like Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Joker. But Injustice was a hit for the studio, and spawned a sequel in 2017 that expanded the weird and wild world while offering the same knuckle-busting gameplay.Unfortunately, outside of a tie-in comic and an animated film adaptation, the series has been dormant ever since. Despite the series’ strong sales and high review scores, NetherRealm hasn’t delivered a sequel, instead focusing on its Mortal Kombat franchise. While we can certainly hope the studio’s next game is Injustice 3, and there are murmurs that it might be, NetherRealm hasn’t given any indication as to what it’s developing next.If an Injustice 3 were to be announced, there are some key changes and additions, in my humble opinion, that NetherRealm could make to elevate the franchise.​​​​​​​ For your (and NetherRealm’s) consideration:Make sure Injustice 3’s DLC characters aren’t one-offsNetherRealm Studios/Warner Bros. Interactive EntertainmentThe first two Injustice games had expansive rosters, but there are plenty more heroes and villains from the DC universe NetherRealm could bring in for a potential threequel. First, however, some of the DLC fighters need to be brought back — and be used for storytelling purposes. Characters like Batgirl, Martian Manhunter, and Zatanna were great additions in the first game, but were nowhere to be found in the second. Similarly, Black Manta, Starfire, and Enchantress offered great character variety in the second game, and we can only hope they return if the series continues.Injustice: Gods Among Us had two dozen characters for its base roster while Injustice 2 had 28, and the DLC additions pushed its roster to almost 40. NetherRealm has demonstrated time and again it can deliver plenty of unique heroes for each of its games, so I have no doubt that if Injustice 3’s base roster were to include 30-plus heroes, they’d all feel unique and justified. Personally, I’m hoping for more Teen Titans.“Add these characters to Injustice 3” lightning roundBatman Beyond Batman: Because a little nostalgia for ’00s cartoons never hurts.Batwoman: Just about everyone else in the Batfamily has made it. Why not Kate Kane?Beast Boy: Fans have long wanted Beast Boy in the series, and for good reason — his shape-shifting powers have the potential for the most unique move set of any fighter.John Constantine: Plays a huge role in the original Injustice comics, but has yet to be playable in the games.Kilowog: The more Green Lanterns, the better.King Shark: Scene stealer in everything he appears in, whether we’re talking The Suicide Squad or Harley Quinn.Mister Miracle: Everyone’s favorite depressed hero before Bob from Thunderbolts came along.Naomi: Probably Brian Michael Bendis’ best addition to the DC universe, it’s time Naomi got to kick some butt in a game.Ra’s al Ghul: Batman’s father-in-law deserves to duel his son-in-law shirtless, just like in the animated show.Peacemaker: He’s already in Mortal Kombat 1, so just bring his peace-loving ass over.Static: How did Static join the mobile game before the real game???Terra: One of the most influential Teen Titans can be Injustice’s version of Mortal Kombat’s Tremor.Go back to comic-accurate suitsInjustice 2 swapped out alternate costumes for gear. Instead of adorning Batman in his Red Son costume or Nightwing in his New 52 digs, you’d instead equip various pieces of gear to each character. You could also add different shaders, giving each character wildly different color schemes than they were traditionally known for, like a purple Superman or gold Green Lantern. Each character ultimately ended up with a similar, armored-up aesthetic. Gone were the unique, comic-accurate skins.Personally, I wasn’t a fan of Injustice 2’s gear system. Even aside from the aesthetics, it introduced a tedious item-management system to the game, full of stats, transmog options, and, of course, microtransactions. Instead, I’d prefer Injustice 3 to go back to a focus on alternate costumes inspired by comics, movies, and everything else. There have been plenty of new costumes for each hero introduced since the games dropped, meaning the possibilities for alternate skins in a new game would be quite substantial.Add premium skins for more character varietyImage: NetherRealm Studios/Warner Bros. Interactive EntertainmentPremium skins from both games need to return, and I’d love for even more to be included. Premium skins would change the appearance and voice of a character while retaining its move set. For example, equipping the Reverse-Flash costume for Flash would turn the character into his archnemesis but play the same as the hero you know and love. Characters like the Flash and Green Lantern are ripe for premium skins so players could fight as Wally West or Simon Baz without entirely new characters needing to be made. And could you imagine playing as 2022’s The Batman’s version of the character with voice work by Robert Pattinson or as David Corenswet’s Superman? Let’s speak it into existence.Take advantage of DC Comics’ multiversal characters and storiesThe first Injustice game was a light multiverse story. It had heroes from only two worlds interacting, but most of the plot concerned heroes from the main DC universe fighting evil, alternate versions in a parallel universe where Superman broke bad. Injustice 2 stuck to the parallel world and explored how it developed in the years after the first game, telling a story of how its heroes and villains had to unite to stop Brainiac.In the years since, multiverse stories, especially with superheroes, have exploded in popularity — and characters. I’m not asking NetherRealm to create hundreds of versions of its characters, but it would be fun to see the studio create even more new takes on the existing heroes.Image: DC ComicsThe story could take inspiration from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Dark Knights: Metal event, where DC’s heroes contend with twisted versions of Batman. Or it could go with a classic trope of villains meeting variants of each other; perhaps Darkseid could team up with his multiversal counterparts in an attempt to rule the multiverse.I know this one’s a longshot, but maybe there’s crossover potential with bringing Watchmen characters into the multiverse shenanigans. DC has been open to doing new things with the characters in recent years, like in the Doomsday Clock miniseries and HBO show. I’d love to see how NetherRealm interprets Rorschach, Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan, both from a gameplay and a storytelling perspective.DC’s newest comic initiative would work well in a game, tooImage: DC ComicsOne particular universe that Injustice 3 could draw inspiration from is DC’s Absolute comics line. One of the core tenants of the Absolute Universe is stripping DC’s heroes of key characteristics while keeping the core idea of who they are intact. For example, Absolute Superman grew up on Krypton and arrived on Earth as an adult, removing his Kansas family ties. Absolute Wonder Woman was raised in Hell, giving her a new outlook on the world — and new powers.Absolute Batman is perhaps the most altered of DC’s heroes. Gone is the rich playboy and in comes a bulked-up engineer. Batman’s appearance is dramatically different; he’s taller and his muscled frame rivals that of Bane’s. The Bat symbol on his chest can be detached and used as an axehead, meaning an Absolute version would play extremely differently in Injustice 3 than the Batman we’re used to.Or maybe just Mortal Kombat vs. Injustice?Back in 2008, Midway Games released an ambitious crossover fighting game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. It found the heroes and enemies of both franchises at odds with one another before coming together to fight Dark Khan, a fusion of Shao Kahn and Darkseid, and save their universes. It was a fun crossover that would influence storytelling in fighting games, but unfortunately it was one of Midway’s last titles. The studio eventually shuttered and from it was born NetherRealm, which hit the ground running with a Mortal Kombat reboot and then the first Injustice game.If an Injustice 3 isn’t going to happen, maybe DC fans could be appeased in a different way — a followup to Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. The title is sitting right there: Mortal Kombat vs. Injustice. It could pick up threads from the ending of Injustice 2 and pit its evil Superman and Wonder Woman against Mortal Kombat stalwarts Liu Kang, Scorpion, and Raiden. A crossover could serve fans of both franchises while exploring the characters in new ways, both in terms of story and gameplay.Is there hope for an Injustice 3 release?Between 2011 and 2019, NetherRealm released a game every two years, alternating between Mortal Kombat games and the Injustice series. Since then it’s only released Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023 and hasn’t yet divulged what its next game will be. It could be a new Mortal Kombat, something new entirely, or, ideally for DC fans, a third Injustice game. Injustice director Ed Boon gave fans some hope in 2024, telling The Direct, “[W]e love the Injustice games. You know, I would be surprised if we never did one again.”James Gunn and Peter Safran became the architects of their DC Universe in 2022, looking to usher in new films and build a cohesive storytelling universe across films, TV series, and games. Earlier in 2025, they met with the heads of NetherRealm and Rocksteady, the makers of the Batman: Arkham games. “It’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Bros.,” Safran said (via EuroGamer). “We sit with [the studio heads] and we talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”Gunn detailed how the film plan may influence the games, saying, “We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages. We talk about those, we talk about what the story might be and we’ll say ‘Well, maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character.’” Gunn and Safran meeting with NetherRealm Studios can be looked at positively. To assume it means NetherRealm has something DC cooking would be too much of a stretch, but it at least gives Injustice fans hope that a third entry isn’t dead in the water.See More:

Shortly after Epic Games dropped Darth Vader, in the form of a holographic conversational AI, into Fortnite, players started figuring out how to get the Sith lord to say the worst things possible. That includes tricking Darth into saying the F-word, “edging and gooning,” and, chillingly, “Skibidi Toilets.” In response, Epic says it pushed out a hotfix for Fortnite “immediately” and said “this shouldn’t happen again.” But now that Epic has set up new boundaries for VAIder, players are seeing what else they can get the former Jedi Knight to say. One of the most prominent and widespread examples of exploiting AI’s unintelligence comes from popular Fortnite streamer LoserFruit, who is also part of Epic’s Fortnite Icon Series of skins based on real-world people. “What freaking fucking food is that Darth Vader?” LoserFruit asked in a widely circulated clip. After a brief pause, AI Darth responds, “Freaking. These players will see an in-game prompt to get parental permission,” the company said in an FAQ on the new addition to Fortnite. The company also said in a statement that players who repeatedly attempt to get Darth Vader in Fortnite to “violate our settings and instructions, he will eventually leave the squad, and the player will be unable to recruit him again in that gameplay session.” For now, enjoy — with the exception of the slurs, that is — the cat and mouse game that Epic is now forced to play with its AI-powered Darth Vader in the wild, as players toy with creative ways to get the Sith lord to say extremely dumb stuff. Update: Epic Games provided the following statement on safety measures it’s taking on Darth Vader’s addition to Fortnite: There are three layers of safety filters built-into this feature. The first layer is Gemini’s configurable safety settings, and on top of that our team built system instructions to prevent the conversational AI model from generating responses that violate our Community Rules or could be potentially harmful to our players – including hateful language or references to dangerous or illegal activities. The third layer is a final check to block responses that violate our rules.  If a player is under 13 or their country’s age of digital consent, whichever is higher, this feature is off by default and will require a parent or guardian to affirmatively turn it on. If a player is repeatedly attempting to get Darth Vader to violate our settings and instructions, he will eventually leave the squad, and the player will be unable to recruit him again in that gameplay session.  If a player believes Darth Vader in Fortnite responded in a way he shouldn’t, they can submit a bug report to Epic’s team for review.  If we become aware or receive a bug report that Darth Vader in Fortnite responded in a way he shouldn’t, we investigate it and if needed, make adjustments to avoid similar responses in the future We’ve also added a new parental control so parents can choose whether to ‘allow voice and written communication with AI Features’ across Epic’s products. 

In Doom: The Dark Ages’ chapter 5, “The Holy City of Aratum,” you must find two secret landing spots to land your flying cyber…demon…dragon… thing to complete the chapter’s “Layover” challenge. This challenge aren’t mandatory for you to finish the chapter and progress the story, but it’s always worth checking what they are asking you to do. These are secondary missions that can give you great prizes from gold to skins for your weapons, and rubies to upgrade them. In this Doom: The Dark Ages guide, we’ll show you where to find all secret landing spots for the “Layover” challenge, and explain how you can reach them. Doom: Dark Ages ‘Layover’ secret landing spot #1 As you start Chapter 5 “The Holy City of Aratum,” you need to complete a brief tutorial that teaches you how to fly your dragon. When you’re done with it and facing the city, you can already go straight to the secret landing spots. The first one you find in a small tower to the left defended by a Titan. (This is the same demon you faced in the tutorial at the beginning of the chapter.) Dodge their shots to empower your gun and kill it. The green arrow indicating the landing spot appears only after the Titan is dead. Be prepared, because as soon as you step into the area after landing, demons appear — and among them, there is a leader. You definitely want to win this fight because this leader gives you a health upgrade. After clearing the area, go back to your mount. It’s time to find the second spot. Doom: Dark Ages ‘Layover’ secret landing spot #2 To find the last secret landing spot in Chapter 5, you need to go to the center of the city and descend to the lowest part. At the bottom, you will find a central circular area surrounded by three pillars.  Two of the pillars have Titans who will start shooting as soon as they see you. Try your best to engage with one but keep a safe distance from the other. Doing so prevents you from having to dodge multiple shots at the same time. When you defeat the two of them, the green arrow indicating that you can land in the center will appear. You want to explore this area thoroughly since it has one ruby and a Nightmare skin for you to get. 

Nightmare skins are a type of weapon skin in Doom: The Dark Ages. By equipping them, you can customize your guns to look as cool as the killing sprees you perform with them — but you do have to find these skins first. Skins can be easily equipped in Doom: The Dark Ages by accessing the dossier and selecting the gun in your arsenal. Just press the command to open the skin selection screen and get one you enjoy the most. Nightmare skins are located on the map and indicated by the symbol of a brush. While it’s not tough to pinpoint their locations, reaching those locations is the true challenge. In this in-progress Doom: The Dark Ages guide, we’ll go over all Nightmare skins we’ve found so far. How to get all the Nightmare skins in Doom: The Dark Age Nightmare skins encompasses the weapon skins obtainable during the levels of the game as collectibles. Every weapon in the game has a corresponding Nightmare skin. While skins don’t add effect to your guns, making them stronger or better, they make them look cool. That’s all you probably need. Below, we’ll show you where to find all Nightmare skins we’ve found so far. Combat Shotgun (Village of Khalim) The first skin you get in the game is the Nightmare Combat Shotgun and it is located in the Village of Khalim, in the segment of the level after you have opened the gate using the blue key. You will need to clear the area by killing the enemies and closing the hell gates. After killing the initial group of enemies, go left while facing the giant statue and enter the first entrance.  There will be more enemies for you to face here. Clear the area and follow the only path accessible now. When you get into the corridor, the entrances will become blocked by a red wall. The only way to open them is to kill all the demons inside — as expected. When you get out of the corridor, you will be facing a portal. Turn right here and approach the edge. From there, you can see an entrance to the room where the skin is located. To reach it, you need to take some distance, run and press the jump button right as you approach the edge of the cliff. Shredder (Hebeth) The Shredder’s Nightmare skin is in the second level in the game, Hebeth. Make sure to progress in the main mission until you’re in the segment named “Defend Hebeth.” You eventually get inside a facility where you can see the brush symbol in a short corridor on a higher level on the map. By following the initial corridor, you reach a point where you must use the Shield Recall Jump to cross to the other side. On the other side, you will find a Sentinel Shrine. Climb the wall beside it and reach the next section. Look to your left to find a few boxes and an opened hatch above them. Since it has the yellow marks, it means you can climb it. Use the boxes to reach the hatch and enter a pathway in the upper level. Follow the trail of gold and it will lead you to an opening. Use it to access the room where the Shredder Nightmare skin is located! Accelerator (Sentinel Barracks) Finding the Accelerator’s Nightmare skin is pretty simple. Once you have unlocked Chapter 4 “Sentinel Barracks,” you should progress in the “Get to the Aratum” mission. Eventually, you will reach a square surrounded by some buildings with a tree in the center. From the path you came, look to the right side of the square and you will see the tallest building in the area. It has two large towers and an opening between them. The skin icon is already appearing on your map by the time you get near the building. Now, facing the building, go left and climb the stairs. They take ill to a group of survivors who are hiding. Behind them, the Nightmare skin is waiting for you. Pulverizer (The Holy City of Aratum) Pulverizer already has an interesting look, but if you want to pump it up, be sure to get its Nightmare Skin. You can find it in Chapter 5 “The Holy City of Aratum” right at the beginning of the mission. Get your dragon and fly to the center of the city. Then, descend to reach the lowest part of it where you will see a large circular structure surrounded by three pillars. There are two Titans protecting the place, so be sure to kill them. Otherwise, the landing spot won’t appear for you. Once you set foot in the central area, start by going to where there is a single enemy and a button on the ground. Now, jump from the edge next to the button to access the lower segment of the map. Turn left, enter a long corridor and keep following it to find the Pulverizer’s Nightmare skin. Impaler (Siege – Part 1) The Nightmare skin for the Impaler is found in Chapter 6 “Siege – Part 1”, which has a massive map and you can get lost pretty quickly. But before you can start thinking about heading to where the skin is located, you need to grab the Purple Key. Start your way from the initial gate and head forward. Be careful since there are lots of enemies. It won’t take long for you to see the large flying Purple Key indicating where they actual key is located. Just clear the area and grab it. Now, go back to the main gate and, while facing the battlefield, go to the left side of the map, following the arrows indicated on our map. You will reach an area with a small segment of the wall with yellow marks. Climb it and follow the small corridor. You will find an immense box in the center of the next room. Turn left to find a Purple Door. Since you already have the key, it will automatically unlock and you can go grab the Impaler’s Nightmare skin. Shortly after Epic Games dropped Darth Vader, in the form of a holographic conversational AI, into Fortnite, players started figuring out how to get the Sith lord to say the worst things possible. That includes tricking Darth into saying the F-word, “edging and gooning,” and, chillingly, “Skibidi Toilets.”In response, Epic says it pushed out a hotfix for Fortnite “immediately” and said “this shouldn’t happen again.” But now that Epic has set up new boundaries for VAIder, players are seeing what else they can get the former Jedi Knight to say.One of the most prominent and widespread examples of exploiting AI’s unintelligence comes from popular Fortnite streamer LoserFruit, who is also part of Epic’s Fortnite Icon Series of skins based on real-world people.“What freaking fucking food is that Darth Vader?” LoserFruit asked in a widely circulated clip. After a brief pause, AI Darth responds, “Freaking. Fucking. such vulgarity does not become you,” adding that LoserFruit “speak[s] like a common thug.”Epic also responded to an instance of AI Darth saying a homophobic slur, clarifying that “Darth Vader was replying to the player’s prompt around ‘carcinogens’ in this context, and we have hotfixed so he should not respond that way.”Less offensive — to Epic, Disney, and the James Earl Jones estate — is Darth Vader saying “Skibidi Toilets.”Other Fortnite players are trying the Bart Simpson prank call approach, tricking Vader into saying things like “this Dixie Normus, you say,” which… well, you know what that sounds like.Epic Games says that the AI-powered Darth Vader has some guardrails in place; “Players under 13 or their country’s age of digital consent, whichever is higher, will need permission to talk with Darth Vader. At long last, you can play as General Grievous in Fortnite, so long as you have the Chapter 6 Galactic Battle Pass. Grievous and his second outfit, Warlord Grievous, are locked to it, but unlike previous special pass skins there aren’t any specific quests you have to complete to unlock him. How to get the General Grievous and Warlord Grievous skins in Fortnite All you have to do to grab both Grievous skins is own the battle pass and level up. Analysts at investment bank UBS recently found that while older generations still spend about two more hours per week on social platforms than on games, Gen Alpha splits their time evenly between the two. Their engagement with digital platforms goes far beyond passive scrolling. For them, gaming is a medium for creativity and self-expression. If Gen Z and millennials were the social generations—raised on MySpace, Facebook, and Instagram—Gen Alpha is the gaming generation. Now, brands are stepping further into these virtual spaces. Just today, Roblox announced it’s opening its Commerce APIs to eligible creators and brands, with Shopify as the first integrated partner. That means Shopify merchants can now sell physical goods directly within their Roblox experiences. It also works the other way. Through Roblox’s new Approved Merchandiser Program, users can buy physical items in the real world that unlock digital content in-game. Among popular gaming platforms, Roblox reaches one of the youngest audiences, with 60% of its users under the age of 16. “These digital worlds have replaced group chats and casual hangouts with avatars serving as extensions of personality and style,” Liv Burke, associate director of social at social media agency Superdigital, recently wrote in an op-ed for Variety. In these spaces, Gen Alpha is building and personalizing virtual worlds with limited-edition skins and viral emotes—and inviting their friends to join. For a generation that grew up with iPads in hand, their entertainment ecosystems exist largely beyond the reach of traditional advertising. As a result, advertisers’ investment in gaming is projected to nearly double over the next five years, according to Futurescape. After all, this generation already accounts for an estimated $50 billion in annual spending—a figure expected to reach $5.5 trillion by 2029. Others also note that this might give trolls a way to sabotage players by throwing matches without any repercussions. Initially, there was a fear that this would be a purchasable item that would incentivize players to spend real money to maintain a ranking, but right now, they’re only available as part of a free rewards track called Galacta’s Gift that gives you items for completing matches. That doesn’t necessarily mean NetEase won’t implement a means of purchasing them outright in the future, however.Notably, Chrono Shield Cards only work for ranks Gold and below, meaning the big-name streamers and content creators probably won’t be affected, but for the average player who ranks between bronze and gold, this could have major ramifications. For all we know, this is just an experiment to gauge player interest, and if the pushback is as loud as it seems right now, Chrono Shield Cards might disappear after only showing up in one season. Or this could be an example of the most hardcore players feeling some type of way about a change that the larger playerbase doesn’t even notice. Me? I’m waiting for more slutty skins for Mr. Fantastic, Namor, Captain America, and Star-Lord. That will get me back in the game and paying money faster than any ranked exploit..
