  • Intel Arc B570 review: a budget GPU that's too good to be true?

Intel Arc B570 review: a budget GPU that's too good to be true?Excellent hardware, but performance issues in combination with less powerful CPUs. Review by Richard Leadbetter Technology Editor, Digital Foundry Additional contributions byWill JuddPublished on March 14, 2025 Page 1 of 9 Next page Intel's Arc B580 graphics card impressed us a few months back, thanks to genuinely decent performance with plenty of VRAM at a mainstream price, but we never got around to reviewing the even cheaper B570 model - until now. That might not be such a bad thing though, as it's meant that we could spend some real time using this GPU as it's meant to be used, get an idea of availability and run some extra tests on the driver overhead issues identified by the tech press post-launch. We'll get into that stuff in a moment, but for now let's answer a simple question: what separates this nominally $220 B570 card from the nominally $250 B580? The answer is not much - and that makes the B570 perhaps the more compelling of the two options. Specifically, we're looking at a drop from 20 Xe cores and RT units to 18, XMX AI engines go from 160 to 144 and core clocks drop by around six percent. The biggest change is to the memory subsystem, which moves from 12GB of GDDR6 on a 192-bit bus to 10GB on a 160-bit bus, so the B570 only has 83 percent of the bandwidth afforded to the full-fat B580. Power also drops significantly, from a rated 190W to just 150W on the B570. Here's the video review of the Intel Arc B570. Watch on YouTubeThose power reductions feel nicely proportional to the cutbacks elsewhere, and testing supports that idea. Without spoiling the results on the following pages too much, the B570 achieves around 89 percent of the B580's performance while drawing 88 percent of its power in games like Alan Wake 2, with a similar 87 percent of the performance for 88 percent of the power in Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2. Of course, these results don't exist in a vacuum, and it's instructive to look at how the Arc cards compare to their nearest AMD and Nvidia equivalents when it comes to power efficiency. The Nvidia RTX 4060 beats the B580 in performance terms in Alan Wake 2, for example, while drawing 80 percent of the power. The AMD RX 7600, meanwhile, is the fastest option at 107 percent of the B580's average frame-rate while consuming six percent more power to do so. If we look at those Alan Wake 2 results in pure effiency terms, measured in joules per frame, the RTX 4060 is the outright leader at 3.19, followed by the other three cards grouped tightly together: AMD at 3.98, B580 at 4.03 and B570 at 4.06. That changes if we look at RT performance in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, where Nvidia is again in front at 2.2 joules per frame versus 2.94 and 3.00 joules for the B580 and B570; AMD trails at 4.29 and is therefore the least efficient by some margin. Before we begin, it's worth underlining exactly the sort of system we're using for the majority of our performance testing - which is our standard high-end GPU benchmarking rig. This is based around what is still the fastest gaming CPU, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, to shift the burden to the graphics card as much as possible. We also have 32GB of Corsair DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, a high-end Asus ROG Crosshair X870E Hero motherboard and a 1000W Corsair PSU. We will also be looking at performance on more realistically matched components - specifically lower-end CPUs that take a greater performance hit from Intel's notably higher driver overhead - which follows on page eight. With all that said, let's get into the pure performance benchmarks to start off. Intel Arc B570 AnalysisTo see this content please enable targeting cookies. Page 1 of 9 Next page

Final Fantasy 14's next patch gets a release date and a flamboyant raid bossIntriguing new modes coming later.Image credit: Square Enix News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on March 14, 2025 Final Fantasy 14's next patch, 7.2, will release on Tuesday 25th March. As always, the new patch - titled Seekers of Eternity - will extend the story with new quests and dungeons, a new raid in The Arcadion, a new trial, and more. You can see what's to come in the trailer below - who's the boy with the blue hair? However, the anticipated Cosmic Exploration and Occult Crescent field operations modes will follow in slightly later patches: the former in patch 7.21 on 22nd April, and the latter in patch 7.25 on 27th May.Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.2 - Seekers of EternityWatch on YouTubeThe news was shared by director and producer Naoki Yoshida during the latest Letter From The Producer stream.Highlights from the stream include this look at the flamboyant raid boss coming to The Arcadion a week after patch launch:To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Also, this adorable looking robot friend:To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Finally, here's Yoshida and global community producer Toshio Murouchi trying on some cute new merch: Image credit: Square EnixAs mentioned in the previous Letter From The Producer, the 7.X series will continue with references to Final Fantasy 9. However, it's the Occult Crescent field operation that's perhaps most intriguing. On a separate island, players can explore the field together to fight monsters and bosses, with a different levelling system based around knowledge collecting. The difference between your level and that of enemies will influence damage dealt and taken, and if incapacitated, players will lose experience points when not revived, which could ultimately result in a loss of knowledge level.Players will also have a secondary support job to boost their abilities, with classes similar to those in Final Fantasy 5. This field operation looks to provide a fresh twist on the MMO's co-operative gameplay.Cosmic Exploration, meanwhile, is a new activity for crafters and gatherers, with new moons arriving with each new patch to explore. Players will explore moons, gather resources, and build bases in a communal experience - its story is all about building a spaceship launching base.Ahead of the livestream, Yoshida was interviewed by Japanese outlet Famitsu, where he stated this patch would be the largest to date. That will please fans who have burned out on the game since the release of Dawntrail.Other smaller changes Yoshida mentioned include being able to use a mount while running and a new jog mechanic once your sprint runs out in cities and safe areas, both of which will aid with the speed of exploration.Further, Yoshida told Game Watch he was initially skeptical of including so many Final Fantasy 9 references in Dawntrail and these following patches (thanks Automaton)."Regarding FF9 elements, I was rather torn... At first, I thought it might be best to distance ourselves a little from homages to FF9 and was going to go with that approach," he said."FF9 is a masterpiece, and everyone has a strong emotional attachment to it, so I wanted to avoid consciously pulling the story too much in that direction. However, I now think that the current flow of the story is appropriate in light of future developments."Of course, series fans will be aware of rumours of a Final Fantasy 9 remake, but Square Enix is yet to officially reveal any such project.Earlier today, Square Enix revealed the Final Fantasy series has now sold over 200m copies worldwide.

Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereFortnite will have another April Fools event this year! Players who played the game in 2018 still remember Epic Games making several gameplay changes to troll players. This year, we are getting another event, and according to a recent leak, it will have quests and rewards. On top of that, the event will bring several gameplay adjustments that will be active for a day.Considering that Epic loves playing tricks on Fortnite players, we cant wait to see whats in store this time. However, its safe to say that many players will be sent back to the lobby because of the event! When will Fortnite have the April Fools event?According to Hypex, the most reputable Fortnite leaker, Epic Games will release a limited-time event on April 1. At the moment, we dont know when exactly it will start. However, judging from the past, we expect it to start at 9 AM Eastern Time. This is usually when new quests come out, and the event should run for 24 hours. The Fortnite leaker reveals that Epic will add new quests and rewards, likely XP and cosmetic items. Furthermore, the game developer will release a small update on this day. Considering its size, the update may not require a long server downtime.Epic loves trolling Fortnite players from time to time. • Tesla Owners Are Desperately Trying to Disguise Their Cars
    www.rollingstone.com
Incognito Mode Tesla Owners Are Desperately Trying to Disguise Their CarsThe political backlash for CEO Elon Musk has led to not only protests, but also vandalism March 12, 2025A Tesla Model X car HECTOR RETAMAL/AFP/Getty ImagesAs oligarch Elon Musk continues to bulldoze entire sectors of the federal government via his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the backlash has taken a toll on automaker Tesla, which counts him as both CEO and de facto head of marketing. Protesters have targeted the business while denouncing Musks far-right ideology, and there are signs of weakness in the once-soaring stock. Its gotten bad enough that on Tuesday, Donald Trump had his top advisor and megadonor show off Tesla models for a tacky photo-op in the White House driveway, where the president told Americans to support the company and pledged to buy a Model S himself. But even some current Tesla owners appear to be unhappy with Musk at this moment, and may eventually take their business elsewhere. Theyre expressing displeasure, or at least trying to protect their cars from the vandalism that a handful of drivers have reported, by rebadging the electric vehicles, replacing the Tesla emblem and other identifying text with the ornaments and names of other auto manufacturers. The models are still recognizable if you know what to look for, though at a passing glance, you might just assume youre looking at, say, an Audi instead of a Tesla. These badge modifications arent new per se Tesla fans have long made modifications to the factory-imposed aesthetics of their cars. One might wish to replace the T symbol on the trunk with stylized letters spelling Tesla, or switching a chrome detail to a black one. The difference is, these changes tended to be customizations that still showed off the brand as a point of pride, whereas what drivers across the U.S. have noticed for the better part of a year now are Teslas traveling incognito, under a different corporate banner.Keep your eyes peeled, and you might spot a white Model Y posing as a Subaru in Manhattan. Other Tesla drivers want you to think theyre in a Honda or a Mazda, two Japanese brands that have none of Musks toxic associations. Chevrolet is yet another option. Here and there youll notice a Tesla owner who has merely opted to remove the badges without installing anything in their place. YouTube offers no shortage of tutorials on the fairly simple process. In the comments on a how-to guide posted a month ago, one viewer wrote, This is great for those of us who cant stand Musk and what he has done to the brand. Amazingly, even owners of the Tesla Cybertruck, a huge, angular, and unmistakable vehicle, have attempted to rebrand their steel-paneled tanks though in their case it seems like more of a self-deprecating joke than effective camouflage. Photos of a Cybertruck with TOYOTA printed on its tailgate have circulated online, as have images of a Cybertruck in Washington state that says RIVIAN on the back, professing an allegiance to an electric vehicle company that directly competes with Tesla and makes a popular pickup truck. When the Rivian-branded Cybertruck showed up on a subreddit for the city where it was spotted, a couple claiming to be the owners chimed in to explain themselves. This is my husbands truck and he saved for five years for it, the first redditor explained. We bought it before shit started getting weird. We had another Tesla we sold but no one will buy the Cybertruck. We literally cant get rid of it and we dont have the money to eat it. We dont agree with Elon. My husband voted proudly for Kamala. We did everything we could to at least get rid of the Tesla we could sell.Further down the thread, the husband wrote: This is me glad I could make some Folks chuckle. FYI I ordered this in 2019 and picked it up in May 2024. Shortly after Elon went weird on us. In another comment, he added, No one was vandalizing teslas before the inauguration. Cybertrucks, whose late 2023 release coincided with a time when Musk was growing increasingly extremist and conspiracy-minded, have indeed been hit hard in this respect. Pranksters this week put up fake street signs in New York instructing dog owners to deposit their pets waste in the nearest Cybertruck. The owner further insisted that he was unlike other, obnoxious Tesla fans who went all in on the truck. Theres a lot of Cybertruck people that drive me insane acting like its their whole identity, he wrote. Do I think Elon is cool? Na. Hes jumped the shark and has embarrassed me since last summer. Im just a regular guy that likes cars that are a little different. When I first bought it I knew it was polarizing based on the looks but man Elon really fucked me on this thing. His effort to put an amusing spin on the buyers remorse is certainly a cut above the anti-Musk bumper stickers that have become internet bestsellers and now adorn many a Tesla including Cybertrucks. But boycotts and figurative forms of resistance are hardly the companys only problem. Tesla chargers, dealerships, and unsold cars parked on lots have been damaged in suspected arsons and vandalism campaigns. Over the weekend, several Cybertrucks at a Tesla center outside Seattle were spray-painted with swastikas, and one with the message Fuck Elon. Trump has signaled as part of his fealty to Musk that he would take action against individuals alleged to have taken part in attacks on Tesla properties. As he play-acted at shopping for a Tesla at the White House on Tuesday, he said he would go as far as labeling them domestic terrorists, because theyre harming a great American company. While such a threat could deter a few though rabble-rousers, it also comes off as a little desperate almost as desperate as trying to disguise your luxury car. In this article:

  • Pirate Bay financier and far-right activist Carl Lundstrm dies in plane crash
    www.theregister.com
One of the initial backers of infamous torrenting site The Pirate Bay, Carl Lundstrm, has died after crashing his aircraft in bad weather. He took off in his Mooney M20 propeller plane from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, en route to Zrich in Switzerland, but local media reports that he crashed into a cabin on Slovenia's Velika Planina mountain, splitting the hut in two.Although rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather, the authorities have now confirmed that a body has been found. Alternative for Sweden, the political party Lundstrm helped to organize, confirmed his death on Wednesday."Carl Lundstrm, a legend and veteran of Swedish nationalism, died in a plane crash on Monday," the party said in a statement."Already in the 1980s he saw where the country was heading. Unlike most others, Carl chose to get involved with full force and in every way he could. He supported emerging nationalist organizations and also played an important role in the nationally noted referendum on immigration."Lundstrm, who inherited a fortune in 1973 from his family's crispbread corporation, Wasabrd, set up Rix Telecom and between 2003 and 2005 provided the servers, networking, and financial backing for famed torrenting site The Pirate Bay. For this, he was rumored to have received 40 percent of the business. He was eventually sentenced to four months in a Swedish prison after being found guilty of being an "accessory to breaching copyright law" and fined 32 million SEK ($3.1 million). Lundstrm then transferred many of his assets to his wife's name, declared bankruptcy, and moved to Switzerland, where he became immune to civil lawsuits. While one might expect the internet's piracy community to be mourning such a pivotal figure, few have seemingly expressed much in the way of regret. Lundstrm's political leanings have destroyed his reputation, although at the time of the trial, he garnered a lot of support from some but not The Register, which covered Lundstrm's political views in a 2009 report with the memorable headline "Pirate Bay's neo-Nazi sugar daddy."In 1985, Lundstrm was linked to a skinhead gang attacking immigrants in Sweden and was a member of the far-right Bevara Sverige Svenskt party, which campaigned against immigration with slogans like "Lt inte din dotter bli en negerleksak" (Don't let your daughter become a negro toy). He then bankrolled the Progress Party, which campaigned in 1991 under the slogan, "A minority in their own country around the year 2055."The party merged with the anti-immigration but more mainstream Sweden Democrats, and Lundstrm then joined its anti-European offshoot, the National Democrats, before being ejected for allegedly being too right wing. He continued to fund anti-immigration groups, including the Swedish Taxpayers' Association, which also campaigned for the abolition of the property tax and the wealth tax.In 2018, Alternative for Sweden was formed and he joined up, running for office with the party in 2021 under policies advocating the forced repatriation of immigrants, the reintroduction of the death penalty, banning same-sex marriage and adoption, and leaving the EU. He garnered 1.26 percent of the vote. While he is revered by some as a founder of The Pirate Bay (which he never was merely a financier), the actual creative members of the site were never that keen on him, only his resources. In an interview (NSFW language) on Swedish television, The Pirate Bay's spokesperson appeared to express some discomfort with Lundstrm's support, but said it was better that the money went to them rather than being given to far-right parties.

  • DeepSeek: Everything you need to know about the AI chatbot app
    techcrunch.com
DeepSeek has gone viral.Chinese AI lab DeepSeek broke into the mainstream consciousness this week afterits chatbot app rose to the top of the Apple App Store charts (and Google Play, as well). DeepSeeks AI models, which were trained using compute-efficient techniques, have led Wall Street analystsand technologists to question whether the U.S. can maintain its lead in the AI race and whether the demand for AI chips will sustain. But where did DeepSeek come from, and how did it rise to international fame so quickly?DeepSeeks trader originsDeepSeek is backed by High-Flyer Capital Management, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund that uses AI to inform its trading decisions.AI enthusiast Liang Wenfeng co-founded High-Flyer in 2015. Wenfeng, who reportedly began dabbling in trading while a student at Zhejiang University, launched High-Flyer Capital Management as a hedge fund in 2019 focused on developing and deploying AI algorithms. In 2023, High-Flyer started DeepSeek as a lab dedicated to researching AI tools separate from its financial business. With High-Flyer as one of its investors, the lab spun off into its own company, also called DeepSeek. From day one, DeepSeek built its own data center clusters for model training. But like other AI companies in China, DeepSeek has been affected by U.S. export bans on hardware. To train one of its more recent models, the company was forced to use Nvidia H800 chips, a less-powerful version of a chip, the H100, available to U.S. companies.DeepSeeks technical team is said to skew young. The company reportedly aggressively recruits doctorate AI researchers from top Chinese universities. DeepSeek also hires people without any computer science background to help its tech better understand a wide range of subjects, per The New York Times.DeepSeeks strong modelsDeepSeek unveiled its first set of models DeepSeek Coder, DeepSeek LLM, and DeepSeek Chat in November 2023. But it wasnt until last spring, when the startup released its next-gen DeepSeek-V2 family of models, that the AI industry started to take notice.DeepSeek-V2, a general-purpose text- and image-analyzing system, performed well in various AI benchmarks and was far cheaper to run than comparable models at the time. It forced DeepSeeks domestic competition, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to cut the usage prices for some of their models, and make others completely free.DeepSeek-V3, launched in December 2024, only added to DeepSeeks notoriety.According to DeepSeeks internal benchmark testing, DeepSeek V3 outperforms both downloadable, openly available models like MetasLlama and closed models that can only be accessed through an API, like OpenAIs GPT-4o. Equally impressive is DeepSeeks R1 reasoning model. Released in January, DeepSeek claims R1 performs as well as OpenAIso1model on key benchmarks.Being a reasoning model, R1 effectively fact-checks itself, whichhelps it to avoid some of thepitfallsthat normally trip up models. Reasoning models take a little longer usually seconds to minutes longer to arrive at solutions compared to a typical non-reasoning model. The upside is that they tend to be more reliable in domains such as physics, science, and math. There is a downside to R1, DeepSeek V3, and DeepSeeks other models, however. Being Chinese-developed AI, theyre subject tobenchmarkingby Chinas internet regulator to ensure that its responses embody core socialist values. In DeepSeeks chatbot app, for example, R1 wont answer questions about Tiananmen Square or Taiwans autonomy.A disruptive approachIf DeepSeek has a business model, its not clear what that model is, exactly. The company prices its products and services well below market value and gives others away for free. Its also not taking investor money, despite a ton of VC interest. The way DeepSeek tells it, efficiency breakthroughs have enabled it to maintain extreme cost competitiveness. Some experts dispute the figures the company has supplied, however.Whatever the case may be, developers have taken to DeepSeeks models, which arent open source as the phrase is commonly understood but are available under permissive licenses that allow for commercial use. According to Clem Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, one of the platforms hosting DeepSeeks models, developers on Hugging Face have created over 500 derivative models of R1 that have racked up 2.5 million downloads combined.DeepSeeks success against larger and more established rivals has been described as upending AI and over-hyped. The companys success was at least in part responsible for causing Nvidias stock price to drop by 18% in January, and for eliciting a public response from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.Microsoft announced that DeepSeek is available on its Azure AI Foundry service, Microsofts platform that brings together AI services for enterprises under a single banner. When asked about DeepSeeks impact on Metas AI spending during its first-quarter earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said spending on AI infrastructure will continue to be a strategic advantage for Meta. In March, OpenAI called DeepSeek state-subsidized and state-controlled, and recommends that the U.S. government consider banning models from DeepSeek.During Nvidias fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Jensen Huang emphasized DeepSeeks excellent innovation, saying that it and other reasoning models are great for Nvidia because they need so much more compute. At the same time, some companies are banning DeepSeek, and so are entire countries and governments, including South Korea. New York state also banned DeepSeek from being used on government devices. As for what DeepSeeks future might hold, its not clear. Improved models are a given. But the U.S. government appears to be growing wary of what it perceives as harmful foreign influence. In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. will likely ban DeepSeek on government devices. This story was originally published January 28, 2025, and will be updated regularly.
