  • Roblox Announced Cube 3D GenAI System
    gamefromscratch.com
At GDC 2025, Roblox have just announced the upcoming release of Roblox Cube, a genAI model for generating 3D meshes. In addition to be integrated into Roblox Studio, it is also available as Cube 3D Foundational Model, an open source implementation.Details of Roblox Cube 3D:We are releasing our Cube 3D foundational model for generative AI.We are also open-sourcing a version of the Cube 3D foundational model. The beta version of Cube 3D mesh generationin Roblox Studio and as an in-experience Lua APIwill be available this week.Last fall, weannouncedan ambitious project to build an open-source 3D foundational model to create 3D objects and scenes on Roblox. This week, we are open-sourcing the first release for this model to make it available for use by anyone on or off the Roblox platform. Weve named this model Cube 3D. We are also launching the first of its capabilities, with the beta launch of our mesh generation API. Cube will underpin many of the AI tools well develop in the years to come, including highly complex scene-generation tools. It will ultimately be a multimodal model, trained on text, images, video, and other types of inputand will integrate with our existing AI creation tools.Cube 3D generates 3D models and environments directly from text and, in the future, image inputs. Today, state-of-the-art 3D generation uses images and a reconstruction approach to build 3D objects. This is a good option when there isnt sufficient 3D training data. However, thanks to the nature of our platform, we train on native 3D data. The generated object is fully compatible with game engines today and can be extended to make objects functional. The difference here is similar to a racetrack movie set. On TV, you might see what looks like a fully functional racetrack, with stands, garages, and a victory lane. But if you were to walk around on that set, youd quickly realize that the structures were actually flat. Building a truly immersive 3D world requires complete, functional structures, with garages you can drive into, stands you can sit in, and a victory lane with a functional podium. To achieve this, weve taken inspiration from state-of-the-art models trained on text tokens (or sets of characters) so they can predict the next token to form a sentence. Our innovation builds on the same core idea. Weve built the ability to tokenize 3D objects and understand shapes as tokens and trained Cube 3D to predict the next shape token to build a complete 3D object. When we extend this to full scene generation, Cube 3D then predicts the layout and recursively predicts the shape to complete that layout.Anyone can fine-tune, develop plug-ins for, or train Cube 3D on their own data to suit their needs. We believe that AI tools should be built on openness and transparency, which is why we are a committed partner in the open-source AI community. We released one of ourAI safety modelsbecause we feel strongly that sharing advancements in AI safety helps the entire industry accelerate innovation and technical advancements. For this reason, we also helped foundROOST, a new nonprofit dedicated to tackling important areas in digital safety with open-source safety tools. In open-sourcing Cube 3D, our goal is to enable researchers, developers, and the broader AI community to learn, augment, and advance 3D generation industry-wide.Key LinksRoblox Cube AnnouncementWhile not available yet, it should become available in the coming days as the release is described as available later this week. • Groundlight Research Team Released an Open-Source AI Framework that Makes It Easy to Build Visual Reasoning Agents (with GRPO)
    www.marktechpost.com
Modern VLMs struggle with tasks requiring complex visual reasoning, where understanding an image alone is insufficient, and deeper interpretation is needed. While recent advancements in LLMs have significantly improved text-based reasoning, similar progress in the visual domain remains limited. Existing VLMs often fail when required to combine visual and textual cues for logical deductions, highlighting a critical gap in their capabilities. This limitation is particularly evident in tasks that demand stepwise reasoning, where merely recognizing objects in an image is inadequate without an underlying understanding of relationships and contextual information.Prior research on multimodal AI has primarily focused on object detection, captioning, and question answering, with limited exploration of higher-order reasoning. Some studies have attempted to enhance VLMs with chain-of-thought prompting or explicit reasoning structures. Still, these approaches are either restricted to textual data or fail to generalize across diverse visual tasks. Moreover, most open-source efforts in this area remain underdeveloped, making it difficult to advance visual reasoning beyond simple recognition tasks. Addressing these gaps is crucial for developing VLMs to perform sophisticated reasoning on real-world images.Groundlight researchers explored training VLMs for visual reasoning using reinforcement learning, leveraging GRPO to enhance efficiency. While prior work, such as Deepseeks research and advanced reasoning in language models, had little been done to extend these techniques to VLMs, they designed a cryptogram-solving task requiring both visual and textual processing to demonstrate their approach. The model deciphers encoded messages using a randomly generated decoder image, achieving 96% accuracy with a 3B parameter model. Attention analysis confirms the model actively engages with visual input, highlighting its ability to focus on relevant decoder regions while solving the task.Training VLMs with GRPO presents multiple challenges, particularly in tokenization and reward design. Since models process text as tokens rather than individual characters, tasks requiring precise character-level reasoning can be problematic. To mitigate this, researchers formatted messages with spaces between letters to simplify decoding. Reward design was another crucial aspect, as reinforcement learning models require well-structured feedback to learn effectively. Three reward types were used: a format reward ensuring consistency in output, a decoding reward encouraging meaningful transformations of scrambled text, and a correctness reward refining accuracy. By carefully balancing these rewards, the researchers prevented unintended learning shortcuts, ensuring the model genuinely improved at cryptogram solving.GRPO, which optimizes learning by comparing multiple outputs rather than relying on direct gradient computation, provided advantages in stabilizing training. By generating various responses per query and evaluating them relative to each other, the approach allowed for smoother learning curves. The research also highlighted the potential of VLMs in reasoning-based tasks but acknowledged the high computational costs associated with complex vision models. Techniques like selective model escalation were proposed to address efficiency concerns, where expensive models are used only for ambiguous cases. Additionally, integrating pre-trained models for object detection, segmentation, and depth estimation was suggested to enhance reasoning without significantly increasing computational overhead. This tool-based approach offers a scalable alternative to training massive end-to-end models, emphasizing efficiency without compromising accuracy. In conclusion, The Groundlight team has made significant strides in enhancing VLMs by integrating reinforcement learning techniques, specifically GRPO. Their approach was tested on a cryptogram-solving task, where the model demonstrated impressive accuracy. This advancement underscores the potential of combining visual and textual data to improve VLM performance. By open-sourcing their methodology and tools, Groundlight aims to empower the broader community to further develop visual reasoning capabilities in AI systems.Check outthe Technical details, GitHub Page and Demo. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • Historic Looney Tunes Shorts Removed From HBO Max on Looney Tunes Movie Opening Weekend
    www.ign.com
A thats all, folks joke would hurt too much right now. Warner Brothers has officially removed its entire catalog of original Looney Tunes shorts from its streaming service, HBO Max. The legendary shorts spanned nearly 40 years, from 1930 to 1969, during what is considered to be a golden age for animation and it should go without saying that they made Warner Brothers what it is today.Deadline confirmed that the removal is part of a company initiative to prioritize adult and family programming, as childrens programming specifically does not garner major numbers for the streamer, so its no longer being considered a priority with zero regard for how culturally significant the material is, clearly. At the end of 2024, for example, HBO canceled its deal with Sesame Street for new episodes, despite the series being a literal bedrock for childhood education since 1969. Some more recent Looney Tunes spinoffs remain on HBO Max, but the heart and soul of the Looney Tunes franchise is officially gone.PlayThis blow to Looney Tunes legacy comes at a weird time, as the new film The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Story debuted in theaters on March 14. Max originally ordered the project, but ultimately the company sold it to Ketchup Entertainment via the American Film Market after the WB and Discovery merger. The smalltime distribution company seemingly had a modest marketing budget for the new film, as the movie has only done a little over $3 million at the box office for opening weekend on over 2,800 theaters nationwide. It seems as though with the outrage produced by the treatment of last years Coyote Vs. Acme, folks would definitely be filling the seats for The Day the Earth Blew Up if they simply knew it was in theaters to be seen. A year ago, Warner Brothers Discovery decided against releasing the Looney Tunes film Coyote Vs. Acme despite it being completed, over concerns that it was too expensive to distribute. The decision has been the subject of much disdain from artists and animation lovers. In February, star Will Forte called the decision fking bullst, and remarked that the choice to not release the film was both inexplicable and made [his] blood boil.Lex Briscuso is a film and television critic and a freelance entertainment writer for IGN. • Dutch unicorn Mews mulls IPO in US amid concerns over support for startups
    thenextweb.com
Dutch unicorn Mews will most likely list in the US instead of in Europe if the hospitality management company goes public, its CEO and co-founder Matthijs Welle told TNW.An IPO is one of the options that we would consider for the future, and if we were to go down that route, a listing in the US is the most likely option, although it is too early to specify further details regarding a potential listing, Welle said. Most other vertical SaaS companies, who are comparable to us, are listed in the US, where there are deeper capital markets and a strong presence of SaaS-focused investors and analysts. However, Welle stressed that his current priority is growth. The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now! While we have thought about a potential exit, we are currently very focused on and committed to building one of the most exciting hospitality technology brands in the world, he said. Mews, based at TNW City in Amsterdam, has built a cloud-based system that helps hotels and other hospitality businesses handle tasks like booking rooms, checking guests in and out, processing payments, and managing housekeeping. It also provides tools for reporting and analytics.Earlier this month, Mews raised $75mn, bringing its total funding to date to $411mn, according to PitchBook data. To date, the company has acquired 12 competitors as it looks to increase its market share. The scaleup is riding sustained growth in global travel to fuel its expansion. Mews reported 50% year-on-year growth in 2024, processing more than $10bn in payments volume and surpassing $200mn in revenue. Last year, the scaleup also earned unicorn status after raising $110mn at a valuation of $1.2bn.While things are going well at Mews, Welle feels that the Dutch government isnt doing enough to support entrepreneurs. Theres no plan for tech startups, Welle said in a recent interview. That is the biggest problem.Growing concerns over Dutch plans for startupsWelle is not the only Dutch tech leader frustrated with the lack of support for up-and-coming businesses.Robert Vis, co-founder and CEO of Bird, announced last month the companys plans to move most of its operations out of the Netherlands. He didnt mince his words, either. Both The Hague and Brussels enjoy being in meetings and talking more than they get shit done, Vis told TNW, adding that EU policymakers are killing innovation.Job van der Voort, CEO and founder of Remote, an HR platform valued at over $3bn, believes Europe as a whole is not doing enough to nurture the next big tech success stories.Van der Voort also warns that burdensome tech regulation is encouraging moves beyond the continent. Its becoming unattractive to start and maintain a business here, he told TNW last month. Thats why I tell startups to leave Europe if they want to succeed.Van der Voort has followed his own advice. After he and Marcelo Lebre founded Remote in 2019, the partners decided to base the company in San Francisco. It was simply easier to start it there, he said. • Irish startup Equal1 unveils worlds first silicon-based quantum computer
    thenextweb.com
Irish startup Equal1 has unveiled the worlds first quantum computer that runs on a hybrid quantum-classical silicon chip.Dubbed Bell-1 after quantum physicist John Stewart Bell the computer weighs around 200kg and plugs into a regular electrical socket. The rack-mountable machine is designed to simply slot into high-performance computing (HPC) data centres alongside standard servers.Equal1s CEO Jason Lynch told TNW that combining quantum technology with todays most advanced classical processors offers the fastest route to a quantum computer capable of potentially world-changing calculations. The potential applications are endless. Quantum computers have the potential to solve complex problems that classical computers cannot, which could lead to breakthroughs in drug discovery, cryptography, modelling, and AI.The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. This is the best way to scale quantum computing at the pace required. The Bell-1 quantum computer inside its shield. Credit: Equal1Equal1 marries classical transistors (for normal computing tasks) and quantum transistors (for qubits) in a single silicon-based chip. Qubits, akin to bits in a regular PC, are the basic units of information in a quantum computer. The more you have, the faster the machine. Most quantum computing technologies are based on either trapped-ion or superconducting qubits. However, Equal1s design uses silicon-spin qubits.Bell-1 is noticeably smaller than most quantum computers out there. The company credits this to its closed cycle cryo-cooler that allows the machine to operate at 0.3 Kelvin (-272.85C) without requiring massive external dilution refrigerators. Most quantum computers need to be kept super cool because heat causes errors by disrupting the delicate quantum states of qubits (there are exceptions, however). The machines cooling system. Credit: Equal1For now, Bell-1 is limited to just 6 qubits, which means its not yet capable of solving real-world problems. For comparison, Googles recently unveiled Willow chip has 105 qubits. However, Googles machine isnt available to buy Bell-1 is.Tech companies are recruiting more and more quantum experts now as they explore the future possibilities of this technology, said Lynch. Bell-1 will help them, and others, run experiments like quantum phase estimation and error correction that will form the foundation for more powerful processors in the future. The chip for Bell-1. Credit: Equal1Equal1s quantum journeyEqual1 was founded in 2018 as a spin-off from University College Dublin. The startup currently employs about 45 people and, while still based in the Irish capital, has an expanding presence in the Netherlands one of the world leaders in quantum technology. The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) recently backed Equal1 with an undisclosed investment. Last year, the Irish company opened a research facility close to TU/Delft, an emerging hub for quantum tech startups such as QuantWare.By leveraging standard semiconductor manufacturing, Equal1 aims to bring quantum computing closer to real-world applications faster than its competitors. That competition pool is growing, though, and fast. In the past few months alone, Google launched quantum chip Willow, Microsoft unveiled Majorana, and Amazon revealed Ocelot.Quantum computing is on the new agenda for TNW Conference, which takes place on June 19-20 in Amsterdam. • MagSafe Monday: For content creators, the benefits of MagSafe are clear
    9to5mac.com
MagSafe is often connected only with wireless charging, but its potential goes far beyond charging your iPhone. For content creators and photographers, MagSafe offers a great way to mount and position their iPhone without the hassle of clamps or brackets. The only time Ive cracked my iPhone screen is with a clamp. This week on MagSafe Monday, I am looking at a product that takes full advantage of MagSafe to give you a content creation tool or a way to use your iPhone as a Zoom camera for the Mac. Lets look at the KraftGeek MagSafe Tripod.MagSafe Monday:Every Monday, Bradley Chambers looks at the latest and greatest in the MagSafe and wireless charging industry to help you get the most out of your Apple devices that support wireless charging.Whats included with the KraftGeek MagSafe Tripod? The KraftGeek MagSafe Tripod looks like a normal tripod, but the biggest difference is that it uses MagSafe to connect to your iPhone vs the normal clamp that many tripods use. You get a charging cable (more on that later) and the actual tripod in the box. It weighs only 13 oz and folds to 12 inches; this tripod easily fits into a bag or backpack. This is a great option for mobile content creators who need gear that go anywhereThe KraftGeek MagSafe Tripod is handy for handheld filming, but it can also stretch to over 5 feet to function as a tripod. While filming at the gym isnt my thing, this would be a great product if it is. Just dont act out and end up being scolded by Joey Swoll. While it works great as only a tripod, a detachable bluetooth remote clicker is built into the product. This makes it easy to take photos and start recordings where youre not near your iPhone. This is especially useful for solo content creators who need to trigger their camera without setting a timer or relying on another person to snap the shot. This also makes it useful for taking family photos without using the iPhones timer functionality. If youre a content creator, you know that flexibility is key when filming video, and the KraftGeek MagSafe Tripod gives it a 210 vertical tilt and full 360 rotation. Whether framing a wide-angle landscape shot, setting up for a video call, or recording a top-down tutorial on your desk, you can adjust the mount to find the perfect angle without worrying about your iPhone falling off. Unlike fixed-position tripods, the KraftGeek MagSafe Tripod can easily adapt to different shooting scenarios.Wrap upAt this price point, I am a big fan of the KraftGeek MagSafe Tripod. I love MagSafe, and this is a perfect use case outside of charging. While I dont film much content, I will keep it around for taking family photos. If youre a content creator who uses your iPhone, its a must-have product. You can buy it from Amazon or directly from KraftGeek. KraftGeek also sells a MagSafe selfie light as well. Bush initiative, children like Donde were able to survive and even thrive despite their parents dying from the deadly virus. After Musk and Trump cruelly and possibly illegally froze USAID, however, those children were on their own and are now suffering tragic and preventable deaths. In late February, the newspaper notes, Donde died of a pneumonia infection that he got after his immune system took a hit without the medications keeping his viral load low from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Moses Okeny Labani, an outreach worker who helped the 10-year-old and nearly 150 others stay alive, told the NYT the boy "would not have died" if USAID was still supplying funds for his medicine.Prior to speaking to the newspaper, Labani had never heard of Musk. OnceNYT writer Nicholas Kristof gave him a quick rundown of the billionaire's bona fides and his claim that "no one has died as [a] result of a brief pause to do a sanity check on foreign aid funding" the care worker insisted the South African-born magnate was "wrong."Donde, unfortunately, isn't the only exception to Musk's erroneousassertion that nobody has died from the cuts.TheNYT learned of others in South Sudan alone including 8-year-old Achol Deng, five-year-old Evan Anzoo, and his mother, 35-year-old Jennifer Inyaa who have all gotten sick and died in recent weeks after losing access to USAID-managed care.Margret Amjuma, a healthcare employee who confirmed Deng and Donde's deaths, had a dire warning that has been repeatedly echoed in other publications: "Many more children will die in the coming weeks."Perhaps most heartbreaking, however, is the pre-epitaph from Angelina Doki, a volunteer whose charges have already started to die following USAID shutting off supply chains for life-saving antiretrovirals.HIV positive herself, Doki told the newspaper that her own supply of antiretrovirals had run out and suggested that she, too, will die soon."I am going to develop the virus," the healthcare volunteer said. "My viral load will go high. I will develop [tuberculosis]. I will have pneumonia.""We are," Doki concluded, "going to die."More on healthcare in Trump's America: The FDA, Which is Run By A Homophobic Conspiracy Theorist, Has Raided a Poppers CompanyShare This Article
