  • The comic book story behind Daredevils mystery killer
    www.polygon.com
The funny thing about Daredevil: Born Again is that, despite sharing a name with one of the most iconic Daredevil stories ever told, its not based on that story at all. (In part because 2018s third season of Netflixs Daredevil already adapted it.)No, Daredevil: Born Again owes much more to Charles Soules 2015-2018 run on the character, in which Wilson Fisk suddenly and unexpectedly became mayor of New York City. And it continues that focus in this weeks fourth episode, by introducing just a glimpse of a dead ringer for one of that runs early villains.Daredevil: Born Again clearly has plans for the character, so if youd like to follow along with the mystery, stop reading now. But if you simply cant wait to find out that guys deal read on![Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again through episode 3, and for some comics from the 2010s.]We only catch a glimpse of a man dragging a body through the bowels of the New York City subway, but his mask is the giveaway. This is Muse, a graffiti-painting serial killer who menaced Daredevil in the late 00s.Who is Muse?Muse, created by writer Charles Soule and artist Ron Garney, is a serial killer and graffiti artist who battled Daredevil and his allies in a couple story arcs in 2016 and 2018. A twisted kind of artist, he felt his work (made with an indelible paint hed invented that required oodles of human blood as an ingredient) had a grand role to play in New York City.He didnt have much of a uniform or outfit, but he did wear a distinct white full-face mask decorated with two smears of blood that dripped from where his eyes would otherwise be, just like the man in episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again. Muses origin was left mysterious, but he did show off a bevy of odd and unnerving superpowers speed, strength, and a silencing effect that messed with Daredevils ability to perceive him and while Soule never confirmed it, his comics heavily implied that Muse was an Inhuman. When Wilson Fisk became mayor on a platform of superhero registration, Muse started tagging the city up with huge murals in support of folks like Spider-Man, Power Man, the Punisher, etc. As Mayor, Fisk declined to muster city forces to track Muse down, because a pro-superhero serial killer preying on innocent people, the marginalized, and police officers was great optics for him. Eventually Muse was defeated in a confrontation with Daredevils ally, Blindspot, and Muse walked into a fire, taking his own life because he felt it was the stronger artistic choice.Wait, Muse is an Inhuman?Yes, but in this writers opinion, thats probably not something Daredevil: Born Again is going to bring up.Marvels Inhumans silo of characters were having a manufactured moment in the mid-10s, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe attempting to spin them up into a replacement for the X-Men, who were still under an exclusive film license to 20th Century Fox. On an edict from on high, the Inhumans became a major pillar of Marvel Comics Continuity, with the Inhuman royal family parking their palace of New Attilan in the Hudson River next to the Statue of Liberty, and Terrigen Mist weather patterns awakening Inhuman powers in unsuspecting human beings.Much in the same way that mutant x-gene has served Marvel Comics as an easy explanation for how a character got their strange superpowers, Inhuman abilities served to explain Muse, because the Inhumans were really hot at the time (or, at least, were being made to act like it).Being the grounded show that it is, Daredevil: Born Again doesnt seem likely to want to rehash the MCUs infamously failed TV series. Whether or not Muse turns out to have superpowers in Born Again, the show already has a lot on its plate between Mayor Fisk and new characters like White Tiger, the Punisher, and Matt Murdock to give air to it seems unlikely itll add on reintroducing the Inhumans to that case docket.

  • Check out Assassins Creed Shadows reimagined as a tokusatsu fever dream
    www.polygon.com
In the lead-up to the Assassins Creed Shadows launch on March 20, the fine folks at Ubisoft Brasil took it upon themselves to put together a special promotional video in the style of old-school tokusatsu shows like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai. The video depicts Assassins Creed Shadows protagonists Yasuke and Naoe, played by Brazilian social media personalities Ruan jogazulu Silva and Thais Matsufugi, respectively, as the stars of a fake television program titled Guerreiros das Sombras (or Shadow Warriors in English). As with any good tokusatsu, the samurai-kunoichi duo transforms from mild-mannered civilians into superpowered heroes to fight hordes of faceless baddies with practical explosions punctuating every blow, all set to a rocking theme song by Brazilian power metal icon Edu Falaschi.Youve come back from school, called your friends from the street, grabbed your snack and turned on the TV, the videos description reads, according to rough translations from Brazilian Portuguese to English. Its time for your favorite show but this time, the adventure is in Feudal Japan!Ubisoft Brasils tribute is so true to old-school tokusatsu that it even ends on a cliff-hanger, teasing an even tougher battle ahead for Yasuke and Naoe in the form of a giant, perhaps robotic enemy. The team also uploaded a version of the video playing on a chunky, sticker-covered CRT television to really drive home its aesthetics. A 6-year-old Ian in some alternate universe somewhere is absolutely pumped to watch Guerreiros das Sombras every weekday afternoon.

  • This Free App Shows How Long You've Been Using Your Mac
    lifehacker.com
I've tried all kinds of time-tracking apps over the years and they can be helpful, but it's easy to get bogged down in the numbers. Sometimes all you need is a little self-awareness about how long you've been on the computer, either all day or during the current session, without the burden of long-term metrics.Pandan is a totally free Mac app from indie app developer Sindre Sorhus that that does exactly that. The application mostly lives in the menu bar, telling you how long your current computing session has been. You can click the menu bar icon to see how long the previous session was and how long you've been on your computer today. Credit: Justin Pot You can also dig into the history, if you wantthe applications goes back 180 days. But history isn't the point of this application, which is very much not a time-tracking appSorhus recommends looking into Screen Time if you want to track longterm trends. Pandan is instead about gently reminding you how long you've been on the computer so you can be aware of that. The settings let you set up an optional reminder when you've been on your computer for a particular amount of time. These can take the form of a macOS notification, a pop-up near the menu bar icon, or a HUD in the middle of the screen as seen at the top of this article. The idea is to remind yourself to get up or do some stretches. You can even trigger an Apple Shortcut if you want, which means you can set up your computer to do all sorts of things when it's time for a break. I can't exactly explain everything Apple Shortcuts can doit's a powerful toolbut know that this means you could do things like load particular applications or play a custom sound when you've been on your computer for a certain amount of time. And Pandan can also be triggered using Apple Shortcuts, meaning you could use it as part of productivity automations you've already set up.That's all power user stuff, though. For most people this application doesn't need to do anything other than the basics, and that's telling youat a glancehow long you've been at your computer. It's very good at that, and completely free, all from a developer with a great reputation. Check it out if you're interested.

  • Disney+ adds a 24/7 stream of The Simpsons
    www.engadget.com
Starting Tuesday, Disney+ has a 24/7 streaming channel for The Simpsons that broadcasts seasons one through 35 (all but the currently airing one) chronologically. To be clear, this announcement isn't about any new content, as you can already watch each of those 767 episodes on-demand on Disney+. All that's different here is a single stream that runs through each of them in order around the clock. If episodes average 22 minutes long, that would have the stream taking nearly 12 days to refresh. The advantage for those who like this format (I can only guess) is you don't have to think about where to pick up; just turn on the stream and imagine you're popping in on The Cartoon Network's longest marathon ever. "The Simpsons Stream will deliver a Simpsons marathon all day, every day no matter when you tune in, this ultimate Simpsons binge will be there," current show-runner Matt Selman wrote in a press release.
