Shortening the time to useful quantum computing rests heavily on the ability to simulate extremely complex quantum systems.Simulations allow researchers to develop new algorithms today that will run at scales suitable for tomorrows quantum computers. They also play a key role in improving quantum processors, running complex simulations of performance and noise characteristics of new qubit designs.So-called state vector simulations of quantum algorithms require matrix operations to be performed on exponentially large vector objects that must be stored in memory. Tensor network simulations, on the other hand, simulate quantum algorithms through tensor contractions and can enable hundreds or thousands of qubits to be simulated for certain important classes of applications.The NVIDIA cuQuantum library accelerates these workloads. cuQuantum is integrated with every leading quantum computing framework, so all quantum researchers can tap into simulation performance with no code changes.Simulations of quantum algorithms are generally limited in scale by memory requirements. The GB200 and GH200 architectures provide an ideal platform for scaling up quantum simulations, as they enable large CPU memory to be used without bottlenecking performance. Ambition is a great thing. It drives us to seek out bigger and bigger things, or even just something new. No one knows that better than Opus protagonist Ariel (Ayo Edebiri), a music writer who cant get a single pitch through her editor (at least, without him stealing it). That changes when aging pop star Moretti (John Malkovich) plucks her out of obscurity. The music legend is putting out his first album in almost 30 years, and inviting a select few,including Ariel, to be the first to hear it.Since Opus is social satire, it doesnt take long for things to get hinky. And yet Ariel is the only one of the invited journalists who seems clear-eyed enough to see through the haze of Morettis stardom. Her drive to tell the real story behind the strangeness of Morettis followers pushes her to look past the glitz, glamour, and indigo of Morettis compound and see something much more foreboding underneath it all. Unfortunately for her, Opus is social-satire horror so being a driven, underestimated young woman trapped at a cult-y compound is exactly where writer-director Mark Anthony Green wanted her to be.[Ed. note: This rest of this post contains spoilers for the end of Opus.]Ambition has always been celebrated where Im from, and I have a tremendous amount; Im sure too much ambition. The thing about ambition that you have to be careful with is, [highly ambitious people] are designed to ignore red flags, Green told Polygon in an interview ahead of Opus release.This philosophy leads to Opus final twist, and the true twist of the knife for Ariel: Two years after her fateful weekend at Morettis, shes written a bestselling book detailing her time on the compound, the deaths of her fellow journalists, and the underpinnings of his cult philosophy. And as she finds out in a final interview with Moretti, now incarcerated, thats exactly what he hoped for. Moretti took the fall for a bombastic crime and sent his followers out in the world to spread his ideology, with Ariels book as the fuel that helps rocket his ideas to household-name status.Green pulled much of Opus from his time as a music journalist, though he pointedly notes that none of it is directly based on any specific event or person.He worked with Malkovich to make sure Moretti didnt feel too much like a fictionalized version of any particular pop star. Still, the films anxieties are much more global. To Green, tribalism is the poison pill of our times, infecting everyone and everything. That makes Opus delightfully bleak: The film suggests that it doesnt matter how much you resist joining a tribe. In the end, youre going to be part of something.In all of the research and the study that I did with cults, so many of them target ambitious people, because youre highly susceptible and vulnerable as an ambitious person, Green says. Though, he notes, this is not a problem isolated to ambitious people or cults. I think its probably harder now than it ever has been in human history to not get swept up in someones agenda.To really drive home his point, Green structured the whole movie with his final rug-pull in mind. The movie rests on Ariels shoulders, focusing on what she wants and how she carries herself. The violence done by Moretti and his followers has a logic to it, but it serves to balance out the heady ideas Green wanted to imbue the film with. Ultimately, he always wanted to leave the scenes between Edebiri and Malkovich one beat away from feeling totally clear even if it felt like you could make a whole movie of just the two of them in a room.What I felt was most interesting and fresh is the cat-and-mouse of it, to always be one step shy of feeling like, [Thats] completed, or, This person for sure bested that person. And for them to feel like a true sparring match, Green says. I think a great end for a film like this is: It should feel satisfying and incomplete.Opus is in theaters now.

Typing cozy into the Fallout 4 section of Nexus Mods doesnt bring you as many actually cozy mods as you might think. According to modders, a custom bedroom with an American flag, something called visible rain, and a busty sweater are all cozy. I realize that the nuclear post-apocalypse isnt exactly chill, but mods are supposed to break the chains of a designers intent and let us enjoy a game how we want to enjoy it. I should be able to turn the entire game into a Stardew Valley dream.Im sure those mods are out there, but it would take a Ph.D. to understand all the different dependencies and versions you need to install to get them to work. So, I had to think outside of the box to make Fallout 4 cozy and find the mods that make living in an irradiated Boston as pleasant as possible.This week on Polygon, were looking at games that feel like vacations for your brain in a package were calling Retreat Week.First on my list was finding a way to fix all that shooting you have to do. Theres nothing cozy about combat, so that had to go. The best mod I could find for this is called Violent Enemies Removed, which mostly does what its name implies. Every enemy in the game gets instantly killed when you get near them, and becomes invisible so you dont have to look at all the corpses. Except robots, because the modder thinks robots are really cool, according to the mods description. Theyre wrong: The robots in Fallout 4 are not cool; they shoot at you on sight and I dont feel guilty for killing them. The mod does 90% of the job, though, so I cant be too upset about it.With combat out of the way, Fallout 4 feels slightly less hostile, but not enough to really be called cozy. The dead trees and desaturated everything arent particularly inviting. Thats where graphics mods come in. In order to mess with the whole aesthetic of the game, you need the ENBSeries mod and preferably a preset by someone on Nexus Mods. I used the Vivid ENB preset to crank up the saturation and add some life to the world. And by life I just mean prettier dead trees that arent so gray and have a lot of impossibly orange leaves. Nobody said a cozy Fallout 4 had to obey the laws of biology.That mod alone gets Fallout 4 pretty close to something approaching cozy. Brightening up the world does a lot to help you forget how bleak it is, even if all the wrecked buildings and cars havent gone away. I couldnt stop thinking about Dear Esther while walking through the empty fields and highways. Its kind of peaceful when youre just out there alone with Dogmeat, appreciating life where you dont have to live in fear of being mauled by a feral ghoul and its even better with the radio on.Settlements are what Fallout 4 brought to the series, and theyre perfect for our cozy transformation. Or they would be if all the building blocks werent so ugly. I shouldve known that building a base out of concrete slabs and moldy beds wouldnt make for a particularly inviting atmosphere. Most of the settlement preset mods use the games default models to give you impenetrable fortresses or, alternatively, beachside fortresses. Its all fortresses with high walls, no windows, and turrets on the roof.Modder Elianora saved the day. Their Chestnut Lodge Player Home mod drops a little cabin near Diamond City. Its right next to a pond and mostly looks untouched by the whole nuclear explosion thing, and it nails the vibe I wanted. Inside there is warm lighting, music, and a little table with a bowl of ramen on it. The kitchen needs some cleaning well call it rustic and there are shelves full of books. Ill even put up with the All you need is love and a good cup of coffee sign. Its charmingly corny, and I think in an absurd world like Fallout, it works.Combine the Chestnut Lodge with the Place Everywhere mod and you have a recipe for a cozy Fallout 4 where you can take long walks to different landmarks and come home to a working settlement that doesnt look like a brutalist hellscape. I didnt have the time to dig into them, but there are plenty of mods that let you add custom settlement objects in too, which means theres room for dialing up the cozy even more.You could spend weeks massaging Fallout 4 into the ultimate cozy game, and you kind of have to if your goal is to erase everything in it that makes it Fallout. Thats not me, but I still installed a handful of smaller mods to round out the cozy experience. I grabbed a mod that stops all the Radstorms, a mod that makes the water unnaturally clear, a mod that lets you craft cats, a mod for clean beds, and a mod to paint your guns pink. I tried a few mods that rework and expand some of the towns, like Goodneighbor, but for whatever reason they kept crashing the game with my setup. Ideally, Id want to be able to visit NPCs and maybe even recruit some custom companions.Your definition of cozy may vary, but I like where my version of Fallout 4 ended up. It became a game all about touring the open world with good music on, almost like I was playing Euro Truck Simulator you know, without the trucks. The Fallout series is already largely about roaming the countryside and seeing what you find, so this felt like a fitting way to convert it into something far less violent.Without all the bandits and radscorpions everywhere, Fallout 4 is a surprisingly pretty walking simulator. With my changes, Ive actually had time to appreciate Bethesdas open-world design. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring get a lot of praise for how they subtly lead you to points of interest and surprise you with tucked-away secrets to find, but Fallout 4 has a lot of that too. I found a diner with a skeleton lying on the table as if they died in a pancake coma and several camps of people trying to start their lives again. If anything, playing a cozy Fallout 4 made me realize how unbelievably empty Starfield is. No cozy mods could fix a thousand planets full of absolutely nothing.Thankfully, Fallout 4 is still alive and well through the power of mods. My time with the original game was short-lived once I finished the main story. Ive never been the kind of player who needs to wipe the game clean of every potential side quest and crafting material, so I eventually lost the drive to explore. With Fallout 4 as a cozy game, however, I enjoyed being able to return without the burden of all the RPG systems. No stolen children to worry about, no freaky androids, no ghouls; just miles and miles of a world on the precipice of life after a disaster. And in a world as bleak as Fallout 4s, I think thats about as cozy as you can get.

Playdate, the little yellow gaming machine with a crank, is getting a price increase in a few days. In a newsletter that Panic has sent out, the developer said that Playdates will cost $229 starting on March 25 but that you can still get the device for $199 until then. Apparently, Panic moved to a new factory, and it would "cost quite a bit more" to manufacture the devices there than at the company's old facility. Panic cited manufacturing costs, as well, when it raised the handheld's price from $179 to $199 last year.On the day the Playdate is getting a price hike, Panic is also dropping "an (extremely) limited stock" of systems that are either fully refurbished at its factory or have "very minor cosmetic issues." The refurbished units will sell for $179, and Panic says that they "work great," can "play games perfectly" and come with a six-month warranty. "If price has kept you from buying a Playdate, we're hopeful these great systems might help," the company has written in its announcement.The handheld gaming console came out in 2022. It has a black-and-white screen with over 150 games that you can download from its Catalog. While the device has the traditional arrow and gaming buttons, it also has a crank that developers incorporate into their games in Chopter Copter, for instance, you'll have to turn the Playdate on its side to use the crank as a helicopter-style rotor. If you already have a Playdate, the company is having a Catalog Anniversary Sale right now until March 20, where you can stock up on more titles for the handheld. Roku has begun running video ads that automatically play before loading the home screen, as reported by Ars Technica. This is impacting owners of Roku-branded smart TVs and streaming sticks, so long as the device runs the companys proprietary OS. Its worth noting that Roku users already see commercials on the home screen itself, so folks have to suffer through an ad to get to the ads.Multiple users have reported seeing commercials for the movie Moana 2, though there does seem to be an option to close the video. A Roku spokesperson shared a company statement that confirmed the new ad placement but said it's just a test. The company declined to comment on whether or not this would become a permanent fixture within the OS.Our business has and will always require continuous testing and innovation across design, navigation, content, and our first-rate advertising products, the statement read.
