• Jon Bernthal Isnt Just Starring in a Punisher Special, Hes Writing It
    gizmodo.com
After Jon Bernthals Daredevil: Born Againappearance reprising his role as the MCUs Punisher, Frank Castle, fans will be excited to find out theres more in the works with the character. Thanks to Daredevil: Born Again getting re-worked by The Punishers executive producer and writer Dario Scardapane, Bernthal found fresh interest in returning to the character, particularly in regards to Marvels choices to go full ultra-violence with the heroes most known for it. The head to head discussion between Frank and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) on Born Again really brought that to light. As Bernthal shared with Entertainment Weekly, They really brought me into the conversation. We really got specific about where Frank is psychologically, where Franks at physically. And it shows when Castle really gets under Murdocks skin. Bernthal described how the arc for his Punisher is finally getting to where the character is supposed to be. Lets see if theres a real openness and a hunger to let Frank be what Frank is, which is dark enough to have the courage and the boldness to turn your back on the audience and to make it difficult, to make it enormously psychologically complex and to steer away from any cuteness or humor and to really go full bore, he said. His one-scene appearance on Daredevil: Born Again opened the door to getting closer to the Frank Castle that I really, really want to portray, he said, especially in the wake of Frank finding out someone took the Punisher emblem and used it against his code for things he does not stand for. Theres a little bit of Frank in all of us; I genuinely believe that, Bernthal remarked of that scene. Like that line, Were all one bad day away from being me. I think that Frank is seeing himself in Matt, and Matt knows that hes seeing Frank in himself, and theres a glee in that. But also, Frank really has no time for the gray. The actor has grown to be a favorite steward of the militaristic anti-hero; as such, hell not only be starring in the Punishers upcoming Marvel Television special on Disney+, hell also be writing it.I went through the process, he said of the project which now has his frequent collaborator director Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard) attached. I went in, I pitched, I gave an outline before I even put pen to page, and I felt like I did not want them to just hand it to me and theyve held me accountable to every step along the way. I really want to earn this and I really want this to be good. The story that weve laid out is, I think, really special. Its the visceral, psychologically complex, unforgiving, no-holds-barred version of Frank where hes going to turn his back to the audience. And nothing is easy and all violence has a cost, and were going to see that cost. Im grateful that theyre letting me go to the places that I really want to go. As for the future of the character, Bernthal is focused first and foremost on the special. What I really appreciate with these guys is that they have their vision, he said of joining the ranks of creatives at Marvel hes worked with and trusts. They have an idea of where they want him to go and the world in which they want him to exist. But theyre really giving me agency on how we get him there and making sure that its honest and authentic and truthful.Daredevil: Born Again is now streaming on Disney+; you can also watch both seasons of Bernthals Punisher Netflix series on Disney+. The Nine X Nine house is located in Gandhinagar, India.Fluid volumes traverse between 9 existing trees on the southern side of a 3311 sqm plot, with 2 of the trees punctuating the open deck areas & the others in close proximity of the house. The entry to the plot is located between a large cluster of trees on the northwestern corner revealing the house slowly as one moves inside, from the gate.Save this picture!Save this picture! The location of the built spaces towards the southern side generates a large garden on the northern side with all the rooms oriented towards the garden. This is planned in response to the hot climate prevalent in this location with temperatures in excess of 35C for most of the year & the sun in the southern hemisphere. The House forms a 'T' shape in plan & section simultaneously. Entered from the northern side a central spine branches towards the east and west with a focal spiral stairway at the center. Sectionally, the house is entered at the ground level with one level above & one level below.Save this picture!A generous sunken courtyard space on the western side allows natural light & air to the subterranean level linked to the ground level garden by an open stairway along an undulating wall with a waterfall. This waterfall on the western side and a shallow reflecting the pool on the northeastern side provides passive cooling to the spaces. 6 of the existing trees onsite were retained within the sunken courtyard & another 3 on the southeastern side.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The entrance level of the house has the common areas including the living, dining, kitchen & a guest bedroom. The upper-level houses 3 bedrooms for the family, each one opening up on 2 sides towards trees and the garden. • Watch as This Rare Red Sprite Lightning Strikes Above the Himalayas
    www.discovermagazine.com
Researchers are starting to reveal the science of red sprites. No, not the supernatural spirits that flit through fairytales, but the bursts of rare red lightning that flicker and flash through the middle-upper atmosphere. Teasing out the timing of over 90 red sprites and tying over 60 of them to specific strokes of parent lightning, the research reveals that one of South Asias largest shows of sprite fireworks arose within a cluster of thunderstorms above the Himalayas in 2022. Its appearance there indicates that South Asia sees some of the most stunning shows of lightning in the world, akin to those seen in the Great Plains in the U.S. and along the coasts of Europe. Studying Red SpritesReported for the first time in 1886, red sprites are a rare atmospheric phenomenon that occurs in the middle-upper atmosphere above a thunderstorm. Flashing through the sky, these red sprites, or red lightning streaks, arise when a sudden flow of electricity shoots through the mesosphere, around 30 miles to 50 miles above Earth. On May 19, 2022, a pair of photographers, Angel An and Shuchang Dong, captured footage of a series of over 100 red sprites above the Himalayas on the southern Tibetan Plateau in South Asia.Representing the largest show of red lightning ever seen above South Asia, the sprites attracted attention around the world. They even caught the eye of researchers, inspiring a recent study in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.Illuminating the origins of these Himalayan fireworks, the study indicates that the flashes captured in the 2022 footage came from a massive system of thunderstorms called a mesoscale convective complex, which stretched some 77,220 square miles across South Asia, from the Ganges Plain on one side to the foothills of the Tibetan Plateau on the other. Similar systems are seen in the U.S. Great Plains and along the European coasts, where equally stunning shows of lightning can be found. Shedding Light on Red LightningTurning to satellite motion trajectories and star fields, the study authors set out to find the source of the red sprite flashes without scientific timestamps. Pinpointing the exact timing of over 90 sprites and identifying the specific source, or parent flashes, of over 60 sprites, they analyzed the May 22 footage without the scientific timing information thats typically required for formal atmospheric analysis. Their results revealed that the red sprites arose within the stratiform region of the mesoscale convective complex, a wide region of rain. It also revealed that the red sprites werent the only rare form of lightning that appeared within this wide region, as ghosts, or strange green glows, and other atmospheric phenomena were also seen among the red fireworks. This event was truly remarkable, said Gaopeng Lu, the senior author of the study and a professor at the School of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Science and Technology of China, according to a press release. This suggests that thunderstorms in the Himalayan region have the potential to produce some of the most complex and intense upper-atmospheric electrical discharges on Earth.According to the study authors, their technique could make footage from citizen scientists a much more reliable resource for further atmospheric research, allowing researchers to study similar red sprite videos in the future. And the applications arent even exclusive to red sprites, with footage of all sorts of atmospheric phenomena posing a possibility for future analysis. • Euclid Telescope Discerns 26 Million Galaxies in New Update of Sky Map
    www.discovermagazine.com
The European Space Agencys Euclid telescope has just magnified our view of the universe with the release of its first wave of survey data, capturing hundreds of thousands of galaxies in remarkable detail. The latest update shares a preview of three deep fields, areas chock-full of galaxies that Euclid will inspect as part of its mission to map one-third of the entire sky. With one scan of each deep field, Euclid has been able to spot 26 million galaxies, the farthest of which lie 10.5 billion light-years away. To classify this deluge of cosmic data, the ESA has called upon citizen scientists to help classify the galaxies with some assistance from AI algorithms. More than 380,000 galaxies have been classified so far, but this amount is just one drop of a colossal data pool that will bring images of 1.5 billion galaxies to light over the next few years.Euclid Telescope Explores Deep FieldsThe Euclid telescope, launched in 2023, is equipped to create the largest 3D map of the universe to date by observing optical and near-infrared light. Over the course of its six-year mission, it will explore the sky in two ways: a wide survey, which will span 14,000 square degrees of the sky, and a deep survey, which will take a closer look at three smaller patches that altogether make up 63 square degrees of the sky. These deep fields that Euclid will concentrate on called Deep Field South, Deep Field Fornax, and Deep Field North could help scientists unravel mysteries of the universe hidden in the complex organization of galaxies. The images are expected to deliver new perspectives on dark matter and dark energy, concepts that are thought to facilitate the evolution of galaxies and account for 95 percent of the universe.A Team EffortThe sheer amount of data collected by Euclid including the 380,000 classified galaxies required input from volunteers through the Galaxy Zoo program. This endeavor encouraged the public to participate by determining the shape of the galaxies observed by Euclid, distinguished by telltale features like spiral arms and tidal tails. The recently released catalog, however, only represents a mere 0.4 percent of the total number of galaxies that Euclid will observe during its mission. And the stream of data continues to flow without slowing down, with 100 GB of data from Euclid being sent back to Earth every day.The Invisible Impact of Dark MatterIn addition to spotting galaxies, Euclid will be able to perceive how dark matter interacts with them. The telescope can measure an effect called gravitational lensing, which occurs when both normal matter and dark matter warp the space around galaxies and cause light to bend as it travels. By measuring this effect, scientists can begin to infer how invisible dark matter is affecting galaxies through its gravitational influence. With the latest survey data, Euclid has provided 500 gravitational lens candidates, depicted as distortions of light that take on varying shapes. By the end of the mission, it will have identified 100,000 instances of this effect. In February 2025, Euclid came across an Einstein Ring, a rare phenomenon caused by gravitational lensing. In a surprise siting around 590 million light-years from Earth, light from a background galaxy curved around a foreground galaxy (NGC 6505) and created a brilliant ring. Euclid's mission will carry on until 2030, but it has already made significant strides in revealing the scope of the sky. With maps of the three deep fields starting to expand, answers to dark matter and dark energy may soon be in reach. • A map of 14 million galaxies and quasars deepens a dark energy mystery
    www.sciencenews.org
ANAHEIM, Calif. Change is in the air. New data strengthen a hint that dark energy, long thought to be constant force in the universe, might change over time.Dark energy explains the observation that the universes expansion rate is accelerating. But its origins are unknown. Its typically expected to have constant density across the billions of years of the universes history. So when researchers from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, or DESI, reported in 2024 that dark energy might vary over time based on their first year of data, it shook cosmology to its core. Many scientists expected that the standard picture would prevail with additional data from DESI. But that hasnt happened. Instead, with three years of DESI data, the preference for a changing, or dynamical dark energy has grown.
