  • The body horror romance Spring is the perfect way to ring in the season
    www.polygon.com
March 20 marks the official beginning of spring. Separately, there have been a lot of new and exciting series premiering in the last few weeks, including Daredevil: Born Again. Born Again boasts the talents of directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead,MCU regulars who worked on Moon Knight and the second season of Loki. But outside of their Marvel TV work, Benson and Moorhead are known for their experimental sci-fi films like The Endless, Synchronic, and Something in the Dirt. With Born Again out and spring in the air, nows a perfect time to revisit one of the pairs more underrated movies: the 2014 body horror romance Spring. The film centers on Evan Russell (Lou Taylor Pucci), a man grieving the loss of his mother to cancer. After getting into a violent confrontation after his moms funeral and subsequently losing his job, Evan figures its as good a time as any to get the hell out of dodge and clear his head. After booking a one-way ticket to Italy on a whim, Evan hitches a ride to the coast with a pair of backpackers on holiday and meets Louise (Nadia Hilker). The two strike up a whirlwind romance, but theres more to Louise than meets the eye.Spring plays out like a strange hybrid of Before Sunrise, The Animal Kingdom, and Species: a symbiotic genre mashup whose elements of horror and romantic drama cohere far better than you might expect at first glance. The film has a wry sense of humor, with believable banter and charming characters casually shooting the shit and communicating with one another in a way that feels naturalistic and inviting. This is especially true with Evan and Louise, whose free-flowing conversations and emotional chemistry feel reminiscent of the effervescent meet-cute energy of Jesse and Celine from Richard Linklaters aforementioned classic.Moorheads cinematography matches and emphasizes the naturalism of the films tonal aesthetic, with a grainy, sun-bleached, and handheld quality that makes the audience feel almost as though theyre riding shotgun with Evan, or walking just a few feet apart from him and Louise as they slowly but surely pour their hearts out and into one another. Levity and romance sit comfortably between tension and horror, as Louises attempts to hide her sudden transformations from Evan result in some particularly jarring and macabre sequences. When Evan eventually does learn Louises secret, its as horrifying as it is a cause for relief, knowing that the two can finally see one another on equal footing.Spring is a very, very different experience than watching a blind vigilante exhaustingly grunting and shouting hiyaa while whaling the shit out of evildoers with a pair of billy clubs. But its a wholly satisfying and surprising film that could easily charm both horror-averse audiences and travel lovers, if given the chance.Spring is available to stream for free on Tubi and rent on Amazon and Apple.

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons made friend codes cool
    www.polygon.com
Things were not normal in March 2020, to say the least. As the world started to spin apart due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other terrible things happening simultaneously in the U.S., solace took an unexpected form for many gamers: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which was released five years ago Thursday.Nintendos cutesy life simulator carried significantly more weight on its shoulders than ever before. People have always used games particularly cozy games, like Stardew Valley as an escape from the stressors of life, but the thirst for relaxation in 2020 was dire, and the masses converged on New Horizons, a veritable geyser of joy. And with a robust multiplayer system, the game proved that not even the Switchs dreadful friend code system would keep people from inviting online friends and strangers to their New Horizons islands. As of Dec. 31, 2024 (just two weeks before the Switch 2 was officially unveiled), it sits comfortably as the Nintendo Switchs second-best selling title behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling 15 million more units than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild proving Animal Crossing to be of Nintendos major franchises. While most popular online multiplayer games make it incredibly easy to link up with others, Nintendos friend code method (as well as New Horizons one-time-use Dodo Code option) are tantamount to telegrams. And yet, trading friend codes felt, dare I say it, cool for a while. It felt like everyone was playing New Horizons, so exchanging friend codes gave you round trip tickets to hang out with someone during an otherwise isolating time. It felt strangely intimate and vulnerable to show your virtual home to visitors, hoping that theyd admire your interior design chops (and ignore the pesky roaches running around). Not only that, you got to do a lot of other things during visitation, including scoping out their islands layout, snagging some native fruit, and buying unique items on offer by Timmy and Tommy. And, of course, taking advantage of the local turnip prices.During a period of historic financial instability, players enjoyed flocking to New Horizons to buy and sell stalks. This capitalism simulation introduced many to buying and dumping investments, sometimes selling at tremendous profits or at losses thatd have you swear off stocks, I mean stalks, for good. Each players island has a different buy and sell rate for turnips, and having a low buy/high sell combination meant that your island instantly became the hottest travel destination of the moment. At the games peak, you could have probably gotten away with charging actual money in exchange for a Dodo Code that granted access to your island. Maybe some of you did!Animal Crossing: New Horizons likely could have kept finding ways to please players for years to come. That said, I respect Nintendos decision to stop the flow of new, major updates in late 2021 with the introduction of update version 2.0 and Happy Home Paradise, the games only paid DLC. It gave players more content to experience, yet it allowed the game that took the gaming world and Nintendo by storm to end on a high note. And I havent used friend codes since.

  • Nothings (3a) Phones Continue Its Legacy of Futuristic Design
    design-milk.com
Nothing has been experimenting more with phone design than perhaps any other company, at least when it comes to traditional slide phones. The London-based tech brand just unveiled its latest and greatest devices in the form of the new Nothing Phone (3a) and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro. Thankfully, the new phones are as unique as ever though the Pro model is perhaps the most interesting.Like previous generation Nothing devices, the phones have their signature transparent look, which gives them a futuristic vibe. The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro is the first in Nothings lineup to offer a large circular camera module on the back, which is surrounded by Nothings Glyph Interface made up of three LED lights that can indicate notifications, phone status, and more.Nothing isnt radically changing design for this generation, but it doesnt necessarily have to, considering how well its built up its brand over the past few years. Theres definitely room for more experimentation when it comes to smartphone design, and its nice to see someone being a little more bold.Theres another unique feature on the two devices. Both have Nothings new Essential Key on the side, which is an AI button that lets users quickly capture a screenshot or a voice note. This information is then sent to the essential space on the device, where its organized and processed. AI can then pull useful information out from that data, including things like dates, locations, and so on. You can then easily search through it without having to endlessly scroll. The phones arent all about design, though. Theyre actually very impressive phones in their price range. Thats largely due to the triple-camera array on the back of both of them, which is very uncommon for phones in the $350-$500 price bracket. Both devices have a telephoto camera, which can zoom at 2x on the standard Nothing Phone (3a) and 3x on the Phone (3a) Pro. That zoom is doubled through sensor cropping technology that allows the devices to capture 2x or 4x photos, respectively, without any loss in detail. Both devices have a crisp display with a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth animations and a high level of brightness to make them easy to see outside. They have solid processing power, and they have Nothings well-regarded Android skin, which gives everything a kind of retro-minimalistic pixel design. Both the Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro are now up for order, with the Nothing Phone (3a) priced at $379 and the (3a) Pro at $459. They can be purchased from us.nothing.tech.Photography courtesy of Nothing.

  • Westminster Residence Transforms Attic Space Into Dramatic Volumes
    design-milk.com
Westminster Residence reinvents the traditional gabled form that populates Torontos High Park neighborhood by transforming it into something both respectful of context and boldly contemporary. Designed by Batay-Csorba Architects, the architects made a conscious decision to celebrate rather than conceal the underside of the roof. The steeply pitched terracotta roof hovers above a dark brick volume, creating a presence both familiar and unsettling. As described by the architects: The simple project form is a composition of three dark monolithic figures, a low dark brick-clad volume, a heavy triangular stone-clad roof, and tall rectilinear dormers. The heavy roof hovers asymmetrically on top of the first floor, cantilevering the covered carport and side patio and producing an unsettling dynamic between the simple volumes. Similar in size and materiality, the dormers take on diametrically opposite stances in the project, with one grounding the west faade as it meets the ground, and the east dormer inexplicably cantilevered and hovering above the carport.Dark stained walnut and heavy unfilled travertine reinforce the weight of the space, while white oak floors and soft lime-washed walls offer counterbalancing lightness. This material tension mirrors the formal tension between the asymmetrically balanced volumes a heavy triangular stone roof that appears to float above the brick base, and dormers that simultaneously ground and hover. The architects also carefully considered how these materials would age. The natural patina that will develop on the rough terracotta shingles, hand-pressed brick, and raw galvanized steel will gradually harmonize with the spreading landscape. The side yards acid-etched concrete patio is detailed to appear as if hovering above the sloping landscape. The acid-etching process gives the concrete a subtle texture that catches light differently throughout the day. A thin metal line creates a precise boundary that manages water runoff while visually separating the patio from the buildings foundation. For more information on Batay-Csorba Architects, visit batay-csorba.com.Photography by Doublespace Photography.

  • This Highly Rated 65-Inch 4K QLED TV Is Less Than $500 Right Now
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.Hisense 65U6N, a PCMag Editor's Choice winner (that also made it into Lifehacker's "Best 65-inch TVs to Buy in 2025" roundup in the budget category) is currently on sale for $498, down from its regular $734 price tag. This 65-inch 4K QLED TV uses a mini-LED backlight system to deliver solid contrast and color accuracysomething youd expect from pricier models. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLGmeaning whatever you stream will look sharp and vibrant. That said, its a 60Hz panel, so motion wont be as smooth as on higher-end 120Hz or 144Hz models. Gamers might also want to think twicewhile it does support VRR (variable refresh rate), it lacks AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync, which could be a dealbreaker for serious competitive gaming. But at an input lag of just 3.6 milliseconds, casual gaming is still solid, according to this PCMag review. Hisense 65-Inch U6 Series Mini-LED ULED 4K Smart TV (2024 Model) $498.00 at Amazon $734.04 Save $236.04 Get Deal Get Deal $498.00 at Amazon $734.04 Save $236.04 Hisense went with Google TV for the software, which is a win if you like a clean interface and easy access to all major streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and Apple TV. Plus, hands-free Google Assistant support means you can control your 65U6N and compatible smart home devices just by talking. Apple users will appreciate its AirPlay 2 support, making it easy to stream directly from an iPhone or Mac. Android users, of course, get Google Cast. One notable omission is that this TV only has an ATSC 1.0 tuner, meaning it wont support over-the-air 4K broadcasts with ATSC 3.0. However, if thats not a dealbreaker, its smart features still make it a strong pick. The remote feels surprisingly premium, with a brushed-metallic plastic design and a shiny navigation pad. Dedicated buttons for Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube make it easy to jump into your favorite apps, and the built-in mic means you dont have to shout across the room to give voice commands. Connectivity-wise, you get four HDMI ports (one with eARC), two USB ports, an Ethernet port, an optical audio output, and multiple 3.5mm jacks. It also comes with sturdy metal legs for tabletop placement or VESA compatibility if you want to mount it. If youre after a step up, the Hisense 65U7N ($698, down from $998) offers a brighter display, 144Hz refresh rate, and ATSC 3.0 tuner; but at this price, the 65U6N is hard to beat for everyday streaming and casual gaming.

  • Nine Ways to Build Financial Intimacy in Your Relationship
    lifehacker.com
On a good first date, you want chat about hobbies, and siblings, and dream jobs. Nobody wants to kill the vibe by inquiring how much student debt the other person has. But as a relationship progresses, you'll find yourself assessing a lot about your partner: Their values, emotional management, political leanings, and so much more. The subject of money, however, often gets pushed to the sidesometimes, until it's too late. We all have different relationships with money. Some of us are cautious-minded savers, others are profligate spenders. Some are always padding their rainy day fund; others cant resist purchasing new stuff every paycheck. When youre in a relationship, its paramount to find out how your partner operates when it comes to moneybecause if the relationship continues for the long haul, it will come up. A lot. Heres how to lay the foundation for ongoing financial intimacy.Do it early on (and ramp up gradually)Its easy to let the subject of money slide due to discomfort. But if you want to avoid a large, emotional misunderstanding down the line, cut to the chase early on. Within your first few weeks or months of dating, start asking questions to uncover their financial situation. It can begin casually with questions like, Are you more of a saver or a spender? or Do you pay attention to the stock market? or Whats your favorite thing to splurge on? to get a glimpse into their general money perceptions, and ramp up to more specific questions about their credit score, salary, and debt as time passes.Keep in mind, disclosure isnt a one-way street. Be prepared to share your own behaviors, habits, debts, and financial history in due time.Give advance noticeWhile some conversations will arise organically, if they dont, make it known you want to have a conversation involving money. Rather than ambushing them over sushi with, So, how much do you contribute to your 401(k) every month? try something like, When we have some free time next week, Id love to touch base on this money goal Im working towards and get your thoughts.Ask about their childhoodWe all come with a money story or particular set of beliefs and fears around money that we absorbed from our families while growing up. Asking how they were raised is one of the easiest ways to gain insight into their attitudes about money. Some grew up in households where discount shopping reigned, every receipt was saved, and Ziploc bags were washed and re-used. Others were allowed to spend hundreds on trendy clothes for the first day of school and went to a different island every winter break. To find out more about the money attitudes they absorbed, ask questions like: How was money handled when you were growing up? Were you encouraged to save from a young age? Did your parents give you money when you went to the mall, or did you have to use your own? Did your parents fight about money often? Where did your family take vacations?Use a personal financial goal to start the conversationTo make it more subtle and less awkward, use one of your own money goals to get the conversation going. Share your desire to get better at budgeting, save enough that you can quit your job to freelance, pay down debt, or buy a new car. Saying something like, Im working towards saving enough to make this down payment. Do you have any suggestions? can open up a candid conversation and lend insight into their money behaviors without putting them on the spot. This can (and should) eventually segue into questions about their short-term and long-term financial goals.Ask hypothetical what if questionsIf its early on in a new relationship, or youre not sure where to start, try framing questions as what if scenarios to get an idea of where their financial opinions stand. Things like: What if you won the lotterywhat would you do with the money? Would you rather spend your life at a job you dont love but pays really well, or one youre passionate about, but will never make you rich? If you had to save 50% of your salary in one year, how would you do it?But also ask real-world questions...Some conversations will revolve around general opinions and attitudes about money, but others should be designed to reveal answers to specific questions you have. Whether you want to know if they save for retirement, ever gamble, have an emergency fund, how often they invest in the stock market, or simply their daily spending habits, devise those questions beforehand. These specifics will round out the more general picture youre getting of their overall relationship with money.Mention an article or statisticsIf you want to understand where your partner stands financially but you're scared to broach the topic, you can take some of the heat off yourself by foisting the attention on a third party. Try something like, "I read this online article about having a money talk with your partner. Why dont we just play along and try it out?Seeing as how money disagreements and financial incompatibility are one of the leading causes of divorce, its a topic that shouldnt be ignored.Discuss future real-life scenariosWhile you wont want to do this in the first month of dating, as you get more serious and begin to broach subjects like marriage and children, dont leave money talks out. This is the time to get specific on how the two of you would handle money as a long-term team, with questions like:When youre married, do you want to keep a joint family account, separate personal accounts, or both?If you wanted to make a large purchase, would you consult your spouse beforehand? How do you feel about setting joint financial goals? If your kids wanted to do an extracurricular or take a trip you couldnt afford, what would you do?What age would you ideally like to retire?Have regular money talksA couples discussion about finances should never be a one-off. Once youve laid the foundation for open and honest communication about money, make it a habit. If youre living together, engaged, or married, set up monthly money dates to review bills, budgeting, spending and savings, or large purchases. You can use the time to review current expenditures, air any worries, discuss goals, and create long-term financial plans. Here's how you can take a good, hard look at exactly where your money is going.

  • The Discord app is getting video ads in June
    www.engadget.com
Discord is officially launching Quest ads on mobile and will start showing users videos in exchange for rewards starting in June 2025. The messaging service has been testing its advertising experience called "Quests" on mobile for a while now after they were officially launched on desktop a year ago. But next month, video Quests will become widely available on its mobile application. Discord frames the experience as as "a way for players to discover games and new content while earning rewards for playing, streaming, or watching videos."For advertisers, though, it's a way to get people to watch their trailers for new games, as well as video announcements for things like DLC drops. Some Quests even ask users to stream games to unlock rewards, potentially gaining advertisers new players for their titles. Discord says companies have used the format for advertising campaigns for some of the most recognizable video game franchises out there, including Diablo, Street Fighter, World of Warcraft and Genshin Impact. Other non-video game companies have also used the format, so you can expect movie trailers and other kinds of video announcements, as well. Max, for instance, made users watch a trailer of Dune: Prophecy before it premiered. Like on desktop, users will get a notification when a Quest is available, and they can choose to accept it to perform the task that it requires. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/apps/the-discord-app-is-getting-video-ads-in-june-130054000.html?src=rss
