• How Severance Employs the Uncanny Valley
    www.ign.com
Theres something uncanny about the office. It has furniture and lights and doors, but nothing you would ever put in your own house. You eat in a little room they tell you to, wear drab office clothes and make cordial office friends. Its you, but its not your life. It just kind of feels that way sometimes. A drop-shipped dupe of the designer handbag that is the human experience.Severance is a show that explores the outer limits of this artificiality. Its a paranoid Philip K. Dick mind-melter in a prestige TV package, exploring the unsettling otherness of an office setting thats just slightly outside the bounds of reality.Credit: Apple TV+Many of us have little choice but to spend much of our short time on earth existing in an office, which means were about as familiar with the look and feel of the space as we are with our own faces. When things are even just a little, tiny bit off, we notice. Thats the theory behind the uncanny valley, the idea that the closer humanoid robots look to real people, the more that subtle, slightly-askew differences will make them exponentially more freaky. If a robot is a cartoony abstraction like Bender Rodriguez, people are totally fine with it. But if you deck him out in some fake skin over a highly articulated endoskeleton, our monkey-brain flight responses cant help but kick in. Its how our brains evolved to perceive things, possibly to prevent us mingling with other early hominids.Lumon isnt the workplace we know, its the one we visit in our nightmares.Think Disneys Hall of Presidents, or all those android girlfriends on display at CES. The more something resembles the real thing, the more that small, almost imperceivable differences matter. Achieving perfection is essentially the only antidote to this phenomenon. The uncanny valley is what makes the CG animation of Bob Zemeckis movies so skin-crawling. Its why we cringed through Mass Effect: Andromeda. The reason AI generated babies raise instinctual alarm bells. When something is not quite right, it can feel very wrong. In Severance, Lumon Headquarters is located in a fake town called Kier in a fake state called PE situated deep within the uncanny valley. The facility features sprawling, identical hallways of impeccably sterile decor. Dozens of meticulously labelled doors that can lead anywhere from a cookie-cutter conference room to a deranged faction of goat-keepers. PlayLumon isnt the workplace we know, its the one we visit in our nightmares, the mundane ones where you completely forgot about a project you were supposed to be working on for months and its due right now. Its a dreamlike space of fuzzy details and a barely-audible buzzing of dread.Severance is heavily informed by the aesthetic of liminal spaces, impossibly vast, eerily familiar environments designed to instill a sense of dread and confusion. Imagine a dead mall that sprawls on for infinity, or a surreal fast food playplace with slides that dont end and ball pits that are deeper than the diameter of the planet. Liminal spaces came to prominence thanks to the spread of the Backrooms, a creepypasta that first appeared on 4chan back in 2019. In the Backrooms, wrote the surprisingly eloquent poster who will forever remain anon, theres nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in.The Backrooms is a true internet original,a memetic masterpiece that belongs to no one and every one. It spawned a series of short films, countless streamer-bait jump scare games on Steam, and, soon, a major motion picture from A24. Severance creator Dan Erickson cited The Backrooms, as well as its video game predecessor The Stanley Parable, as one of many inspirations for the shows dreamlike unreality.Credit: Apple TV+He also named The Matrix, The Truman Show, and Dark City, films featuring characters who realize they are trapped in an obscene simulacrum of life, manipulated by powerful forces beyond their control or understanding. Even before our naive heroes learn the truth, they begin their journey by seeing the slight cracks in the seemingly perfect facades around them enlightenment achieved by way of the uncanny valley effect. The notion of awakening from a constructed reality runs deep within Severance, not only thematically but aesthetically. The Truman Show, in particular, with its deliberately anachronistic clockwork world, seems to inform the show's interpretation of the timeless essence of the office.Lumons design language isn't a pastiche of any particular era, though the earth tone interiors and Brutalist tech evoke the ugly interiors of the 60s and 70s. The severed floor exists outside of any specific time or place the same way its employees exist outside of their real lives. Its a boiled-down, hyperreal, evocative impression of what a workplace is. Its not the office, its Officecore.Theres been copious discussion about how Season 2 of Severance doesnt quite live up to the high bar set by its predecessor. Some attribute that to unsatisfying follow-ups to the first seasons revelations. Others might point to a ramping up of the mystery box-ification that has plagued buzzworthy TV shows since Lost. For myself, Ive found the show slightly less interesting since it shifted its focus away from the workplace. Outdoor team-building exercises, diversions to hellish hometowns, and an increased emphasis on the outside world has diminished what made the show so special in the first place: the unsettling excursion into the uncanny valley of our artificial office lives.

  • Apple One is a great subscription bundle, but it neglects one key audience
    9to5mac.com
Apple introduced Apple One in 2020, providing an easy way for avid Apple users to subscribe to multiple services at once, and get a nice bundle discount for doing so. It offers three tiers, and its remained that way since it launched. However, I think Apple would benefit greatly from offering a fourth tier, capturing a key demographic.Apple One tiersCurrently, Apple One offers three tiers: Individual, Family, and Premier.Individual comes in at $19.95/month, offering Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, and 50GB of iCloud+ storage. Family comes in at $26.95/month, bumping up your iCloud+ storage to 200GB, and enabling family sharing for all of your services. Last but not least, Premier comes in at $37.95/month, giving users access to Apple Fitness+ and Apple News+, as well as a full 2TB of iCloud+ storage. This system is mostly fine, and I dont really have any complaints with the three tiers as they exist today. All that said, I think theres great opportunity to introduce a fourth tier: one for students. The precedentApple already sees the value in offering a student tier for services, given the fact that they do so with Apple Music. Apple Music normally comes in at $10.99/month, but verified college students can save around 50%, bringing the service down to just $5.99/month for them. That alone is compelling enough, but Apple Music Student actually has a secret perk: free access to Apple TV+, indefinitely. Its not a free trial. As long as you subscribe to Apple Music Student and Apple continues to offer the perk, youll have access to Apple TV+.Technically speaking, this is a limited time perk. Apples website states that the offer may end at any time. However, Apple has been offering it for many years, ever since the service launched in late 2019.Apple already has a low-scale student bundle going here, so why not expand it?The proposal: Apple One StudentApple One Student should remain simple. I think the most compelling package would likely be taking the individual plan and offering a discount for students. This way, students can access iCloud+ for backups and photo syncing, as well as Apple Arcade for casual gaming, on top of their already existing perks of Apple Music and Apple TV+.Given the fact that Apple Music Student is priced at a 45% discount compared to the normal plan, we could estimate that a student version of Apple One Individual would come in around $10.95. I dont know about you, but that sounds like a pretty compelling offering to help Apple to bolster its subscriber numbers with a younger audience, especially when it comes to Apple Arcade. It would be great to change all their tiers to mix and match tiers instead. So tier 1 would be any 2 services, tier 2 would be any 4 services, and tier 3 would be all 6 of them. View all commentsPlus, when these students eventually graduate (or after 5 years, whichever comes first), theyre likely to stay subscribed to Apple One Individual since theyve already gotten used to the perks. Its a win win for both Apple and verified college students. What do you think of this idea for students? Would you change anything about it? • Scientist Says That ChatGPT Has a "Staggering" Gender Problem
    futurism.com
As popular as ChatGPT has become, it apparently has a major gender problem. In an interview withPsyPost, University of Chicago economist Anders Humlum explained that in his research, he's encountered a "staggering gender gap in the adoption of ChatGPT."At the end of last year, Humlum and his colleague Emilie Vestergaard of the University of Copenhagen revealed in a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that women were 16 percentage points behind men in ChatGPT adoption. This trend was evident, the economist toldPsyPost, "even among workers in the same jobs handling similar job tasks." Among the eleven "exposed" occupations they assessed from software developers to teachers and legal professionals to customer service reps journalists and marketing professionals were the most likely to use OpenAI's flagship chatbot, with roughly 64 percent attesting that they use it for work.Curiously, financial advisors and accountants had the lowest share of ChatGPT use, weighing in at just 18 percent of workers in those fields who said they use it for work. That could be because, as the paper notes, they "handle sensitive information" as part of their daily duties.Across the occupations surveyed, however, women were always behind men on adoption rates. Only about 62 percent of female journalists and marketers reported that they use ChatGPT for work and the disparity was greater for women who work in financial advising, with fewer than 10 percent saying they had used it on the job.So what's behind the gender gap in ChatGPT adoption? To put it frankly, the researchers haven't quite figured that bit out.As Humlum and Vestergaard noted in their paper, women are "about as optimistic as men about the time savings from ChatGPT," and seem to even save a bit more time than their male counterparts in the workplace when they do use it. There's some evidence that women have more "adoption friction" aversion, basically to AI due to a lack of training with the tech, and women were more likely than men to say they "do not know how" to use ChatGPT.The researchers pointed to another 2024 survey that looked into student ChatGPT usage in Norway for potential answers. In the first half of that study, researchers at Norway's Institute of Economics found that of the more than 500 students they surveyed, men were between 10 and 25 percentage points more likely than women to use ChatGPT regularly.Overall, that Norwegian study found that "female students use ChatGPT much less, are less proficient at writing ChatGPT prompts, and are more sensitive to bans on using ChatGPT," Humlum and Vestergaard wrote. While their Nordic counterparts didn't have any hard-and-fast explanations for that gender gap, both studies documenting the trend make it seem pretty legit. As he toldPsyPost, Humlum is most interested in figuring out "how generative AI is reshaping labor markets" but this finding was, nevertheless, "a big surprise for us."More on AI and work: People With This Level of Education Use AI the Most at WorkShare This Article

  • MrBeast Brags About the Human Lives He Has Suspended in Bizarre "Simulations"
    futurism.com
To make great content requires great sacrifice. It just doesn't have to be yoursacrifice. At least, that's the essence of Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson's success as a YouTube creator. In just 13 short years, the now-26 year old content creator has amassed a virtual empire by filming brash "Squid Game"-style videos and poppy viral stunts, which he trades to platforms like YouTube and TikTok in exchange for huge sums of ad revenue, sponsorships, and merchandise sales.Donaldson's videos are an acquired taste. Primarily marketed toward children and young teens, the MrBeast brand thrives off costly productions that put everyday people through the Stanford Prison Experiment-esque challenges in exchange for huge gobs of cash. Examples include "Ages 1-100 Fights For $500,000," where 100 people of different ages compete in tiny cubes to be the last man standing, and "I Helped 2,000 People Walk Again," where Donaldson pays the prosthetic fittings of 2,000 people who couldn't otherwise afford them. It's these life-changing outcomes that make the content so popular and that allow Donaldson to play the benevolent millionaire philanthropist.Take Donaldson's recent post on X-formerly-Twitter as case-in-point: "I have a pilot living in a $2,500,000 private jet and if he doesnt leave for 100 days he keeps it, a cop/criminal in a jail and if they dont leave for 100 days they win $500,000, and someone living in a gym until he loses 100 pounds for $500,000.""Cant wait to upload these," he concludes.Like rats in a maze, these folks largely plucked from Donaldson's audience are the lifeblood of MrBeast. Though Donaldson and his defenders love to point out that MrBeast's Running Men "can leave whenever," that's sort of beside the point; anyone putting themselves in that desperate situation clearly needs the money, making them easy to manipulate. As critic Nathan J. Robinson wrote in Current Affairs, the problem with MrBeast is best understood by looking beyond Donaldson himself. "Its clear that part of the reason people are willing to undergo whatever challenges MrBeast sets is that money has the power to completely change peoples lives," Robinson pined."In a world where everybody was doing fine economically," the critic continues, "maybe there wouldnt be anything objectionable about offering people a reward to participate in some televised challenge, but in thisworld, where nearly half of Americans cant afford a $400 emergency expense, a lot of people are going to be grasping for MrBeasts largesse because theyneedit."If there's one thing Donaldson's learned in his years of content creation, it's that charity pays. Thanks to the industrial scale of his dopamine-pumping almsgiving, the YouTuber has amassed an estimated fortune of $500 million. That's money for more brand deals, more merchandizing, and more extreme stunts. As the saying goes: the road to hell is paved with good intentions.Share This Article

Katamari Damacy creator left Bandai Namco to "get ideas from different perspectives""I left the company because I didn't want to be limited to only working with the people there."Image credit: Uvula / Annapurna Interactive News by Vikki Blake Contributor Published on March 22, 2025 Keita Takahashi, the creator of Katamari Damacy, has revealed he left Bandai Namco so he wouldn't "be limited to only working with [...] Japanese people".Takahashi - who left Bandai Namco in 2010 after 11 years and recently announced his next project, To a T, which is set to be published by Annapurna - stressed the importance of sharing skills and experiences with developers from all over the world to "get ideas from different perspectives".Katamari Damacy REROLL - Launch Trailer - Nintendo Switch.Watch on YouTube"I left [Bandai Namco] because I didn't want to be limited to only working with the people there. I wondered why I was only making games with Japanese people," Takahashi told GameSpark (thanks, Automaton)."I thought if I could develop games with more people from other countries, I would be able to get ideas from different perspectives."I'm currently developing games with a range of people from all over the world."Takahashi added that knowing the different customs and cultural expectations of different countries is also valuable when making games."American schools don't have the custom of changing shoes like Japanese schools do," Takahashi explained. "I was once asked by a team member about what the school space full of shoe cupboards was like. I tried to convey to them that there are loads of shoes, and there's a kind of smell... but it really is something that's unique to Japan."I don't know what school culture is like in the US, so I had no choice but to use Japanese elements."Takahashi finished on saying he was committed to "mak[ing] games that I feel satisfied with, so I'd like people to play them if they want to"."I guess I probably should make games while thinking about the target audience, but I'll work on that in my next life," he added. To a T will release on 28th May on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, including Xbox Game Pass.A new Katamari Damacy game was also recently revealed, which will release exclusively on Apple Arcade.Katamari Damacy Rolling Live will be the first original game in the series in almost eight years and will arrive on Apple Arcade on 3rd April. Once again, players will need to roll the Katamari to "roll, stick, and grow" and please the King of All Cosmos.
