• Orks overtake the Warhammer 40K competitive scene and Im so happy for them
    www.polygon.com
The Orks are one of the best factions in Warhammer 40,000, and everybody has a soft spot for these big green boys. Everyone in the setting is a bad guy of one stripe or another, and the Orks are no exceptions they kill, maim, and loot with reckless abandon. But theyre also really funny while they do these terrible acts. Most 40K cultures are built off fear and misery, but the Orks are having a great time in the grim dark future of only war. Their fortunes brightened even more with a recent change to their rules, and now competitive 40K fans are quaking before a green tide of Ork victories. In Warhammer 40,000, players each build an army using a rulebook called a codex and a bunch of models. Each faction has their own flavor, of course. Space Marines have drop pods that let them deep strike into opposing players backfields, for instance, and the Tau are known for their long range sniping. Meanwhile, the Imperial Guard focus on masses of troops backed up by reliable tanks, and the Necron just blink back into existence right after you kill them. The Orks, on the other hand, have detachment rules based around how much they love being in battle and causing problems for everyone else. A WAAAAAAAGH, for instance, is an Orc battlecry and the name for a massive gathering of Orks storming a given section of the galaxy. One Detachment rule in particular has led to an Ork ascendancy: More Dakka. Dakka, for the uninitiated, is how an Ork would cheerfully imitate the sound of gunfire. The Orks are balanced around the spray-and-pray philosophy; theyre not patient enough to be master marksmen. More Dakka gives them a huge jump in damage, and the results are immediately apparent. If you check the recorded result of competitive matches, the Orks have come out in force, picking up tons of wins in separate circuits. There are still strong factions competing for the top spot; the Aeldari and World Eaters both enjoyed good showings. The Tau, Necrons, and Custodes, on the other hand, all suffered some serious losses. Based off the competitive circuit, it looks like its an Ork galaxy, and were all just living in it. Games Workshop will likely step in and adjust the rules to match, but not before this weekends big AdeptiCon, an annual wargaming convention that plays host to some of the years biggest competitive matches. The Warhammer 40,000 tournament will play out from March 27 through to March 30, and unless players can figure out a counter to all that Dakka, well see the Orks WAAAAAAAGH continue unchecked.

  • How to Unlock Your Pixel Without Turning On the Screen
    lifehacker.com
As Google prepares Android 16 for launch, users are discovering interesting new features in its various betas. The latest one, discovered by Android Authority, allows you to unlock your Google Pixel phone even when its screen is turned off. This is possible on Pixel phones that have an in-display fingerprint sensor and are running Android 16 beta 3.How to unlock your Pixel phone with the screen offHere's how the new feature works. First, get an eligible Pixel phone and then update it to Android 16 beta 3 (I'll go over how in a little bit). Next, go toSettings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock, and enable Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock. Now lock your phone and place your finger where the in-display fingerprint sensor is located. This should unlock your smartphone. The devices that support Android 16's screen off fingerprint unlocksMany Android phones actually already support unlocking via the in-display fingerprint sensor even while the screen is off, but Google Pixel phones have not supported this feature until now. You can use this feature with every Google Pixel phone that has an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is to say that if you have a Pixel 6 or newer, you'll have access to it. You will need Google's newest OS, but because Android 16 can be installed on Pixel 6 and newer devices, that's not a problem.Installing Android 16 on your Pixel phoneBefore downloading and installing the Android 16 beta, you should make a full back up of your device. Beta software is unstable and can cause critical apps such as the Phone app to stop working. If this happens to you, you may be out of luck, as Google warns that reverting to a stable version of Android requires you to erase all data on your phone and that restoring from a backup may not be successful at times.Once you've prepped, and if you're okay with the risks, visit Google's Android beta website and select View your eligible devices. After that, follow the on-screen prompts to enroll in the Android beta program. With that, just go through the steps above to start unlocking your phone without turning on the screen first.

  • Apple Finally Made the New AirPods Max Worth Buying
    lifehacker.com
Last year, I advised readers that the "second-generation" AirPods Max were actually a worse deal than the original pair. Apple was charging $549 for headphones that were virtually identical to the pair that launched in 2020, only with USB-C instead of Lightning. What's more, Apple actually took away a feature with the USB-C pair: Unlike the Lightning AirPods Max, the USB-C model was not compatible with 3.5mm adapter, meaning you couldn't use them for wired playback. Seeing as the Lightning AirPods Max are frequently on sale by around $150, it seemed silly to recommend the newer, more expensive AirPods Maxunless you really couldn't live without USB-C. That is, until today, when Apple made an excellent AirPods Max announcement. When Apple releases iOS 18.4 next month (as well as macOS Sequoia 15.4), the company will issue a rare AirPods Max update: These headphones will support both lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio, as Apple will now allow for a wired connection over USB-C. AirPods Max (USB-C) $479.99 at Amazon $549.00 Save $69.01 Shop Now Shop Now $479.99 at Amazon $549.00 Save $69.01 Lossless audio vs. BluetoothLet's start with lossless audio. While AirPods' wireless quality is excellent, it isn't perfect. In order to beam music from a device like your iPhone or Mac to your AirPods over Bluetooth, those files need to be compressed. While compression has come a long way since the days of MP3 files, you do lose information in the process. You might not notice, especially with a good pair of wireless headphones, but if you're directly comparing a lossy codec like AAC (what Apple uses for Bluetooth streaming) and ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) over high quality headphones, you may hear a difference.AirPods Max will support ALAC streaming and downloads via a USB-C connection. You can plug your AirPods into your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, and listen to music without data loss. That said, be warned: These files will be much larger than the compressed music you might be used to, so keep that in mind before downloading or streaming large amounts of lossless music. Apple wants professionals making music with AirPods MaxThe other big update here is ultra-low latency audio. Traditionally, wireless headphones have been impossible to use for anything that requires real-time audio feedback. That's because Bluetooth audio comes with "latency," or a delay between the audio source and the target output. This isn't an issue when streaming music or audiobooks, or even when watching shows and movies, because the delay is minute enough to be inconsequential. However, if you're a professional musician, this delay is unworkable. Try recording a track when listening to real-time feedback on a pair of wireless headphones, and you'll have a bad time. Now that AirPods Max with USB-C can be used with a wired connection, that's changing. With iOS 18.4, you can plug your AirPods Max directly into a source, like your Mac, via USB-C, and take advantage of ultra-low latency audio. Apple even says that this AirPods Max model is the only headphone to offer musicians the ability to create and mix music with Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking in mind. I've never been a big fan of this feature, but perhaps once artists can design tracks with head tracking while using AirPods Max, it may improve. The company also touts the benefits of this reduced latency for gaming and livestreaming. Apple says there is zero response delay here, and the experience is "on par" with the built-in speakers on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.OG AirPods Max are left behindIf you're an original AirPods Max owner (like me), none of this news applies to you. Unfortunately, both lossless wired playback and ultra-low latency audio are exclusive to the USB-C AirPods Maxeven though the original AirPods Max supports wired playback over a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter.Apple didn't specify why this was the caseperhaps there's a technical limitation between Lightning and USB-Cbut I imagine it also helps that the company now has two new perks to highlight with its "new" AirPods Max. Remember, these headphones were basically the same, minus the port and some new colors, so now Apple can point to these features as exclusives, and reasons to buy the AirPods Max over the, well, older AirPods Max. If you're an audiophile entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, then, yeah: It's a reason to buy the new model. Lossless audio support is awesome, especially if you have the lossless audio files to play. And if you have interest or need for a pair of headphones for music creation, all the better. However, barring these needs, I'd still recommend comparing prices between the Lightning and USB-C AirPods Max. Stores are cutting the price of the new model more than they used to, but if you find a significantly good deal on the Lightning headphones, consider them. If you don't care about USB-C, lossless audio, or ultra-low latency, and you just want a pair of high-quality wireless headphones that work well with your Apple devices, you'll be well-served by the original pairespecially if you can shred some digits off the price tag.

  • Disney+ adds option to edit 'Continue Watching' list
    www.engadget.com
Disney is giving Disney+ subscribers the ability to edit their "Continue Watching" lists, a quality-of-life feature that's been oddly missing from the streaming service up until now.Continue Watching collects all of the TV shows, movies and live events you've started watching, saving your place so you can pick up right where you left off. If you dip in and out of watching things, it's very easy for the list to get unwieldy quickly, so being able to edit it is helpful. You can remove something from Continue Watching in two different ways: directly from the list itself or the Details page of a given show or movie. If you're on your TV and want to edit your list, you just highlight a movie or show with your remote, press and hold the remote's button (on the Apple TV remote, for example, its the center button) and then select "Remove" when the menu slides over. From the Details page of the show or movie you want to remove, just highlight and select the "Remove" icon (it's a minus symbol) to get it out of your list. The process is similar on the web or in Disney+ mobile app. If you're watching Disney+ on your phone, you can just tap on the three dots in the corner of a show or movie in Continue Watching and then tap on Remove. On the web, just hover your mouse over anything in Continue Watching and click on the Remove icon in the corner of the movie or show. The only thing you can't remove from Continue Watching are live events, which will stay until they officially end.Disney says the ability to edit Continue Watching is available today on the web, iOS devices and Apple TV, and will be coming to the other platforms Disney+ is on in the coming weeks. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/streaming/disney-adds-option-to-edit-continue-watching-list-182856588.html?src=rss

  • Nothings Essential Spaces is an AI-powered app done right
    www.engadget.com
The most notable feature of Nothings latest phones may be its combo of distinct hardware design and Android software tweaks. However, after using the Nothing Phone 3a for a few weeks, the Essential Space app has kept me hooked on what is ostensibly a lower-mid-range smartphone. Its also a hard app to explain in a single sentence. Its a little bit of a screenshot gallery, a little bit of a notes app, a little bit of a to-do list app, a little bit of country, a little bit of rock-and-roll. Its all sewn together with similar AI features to what we've seen on most new smartphones. However, compared to the disjointed apps and features of Google AI, Galaxy AI, or Apple Intelligence, Essential Space keeps everything in one place. The utility is helped by having a dedicated launcher button (the Essential Key): A single press will screenshot your phone (and file it in Space), while a long press starts recording your voice and files it away in Space, too, initiating AI-powered transcription. A double press of the Essential Key launches the app, which seems odd. The screenshot should also be a double press, but maybe thats just me.Its not an entirely new premise. We raved about Googles Pixel Screenshot app, which also does a good job of organizing your screenshots to make things easier to find. However, Googles Screenshots app is limited to only that screenshots. Nothing, on the other hand, already announced itll bring a similar-seeming Smart Collections feature to the Space app in the future.Inside Nothings Space app, the phone extracts dates, attempts to create to-do lists, analyzes screenshots and associates them with time, date, and location data. In short, it makes it easier to remember why I took a screenshot when I did, and it even attempts to create actionable items and reminders. Ive started taking voice notes and mulling over everything I must do on a workday morning. It'll summarize it into a to-do list with goals I can check off when completed. With Essential Space, Nothing doesnt seem to be meddling with AI for the sake of it. While image generation, rewriting emails, and writing guidance on my smartphone are occasionally fun, Essential Space removes many roadblocks to using these functions. I dont have to ask the Phone 3a to transcribe your voice recordings; it just gets to work. There are limitations, perhaps predictably, given the middleweight processor of a mid-range phone, and AI processing happens on the cloud. Nothing says it deletes processing requests from its servers after theyre completed. However, phones that cost over twice as much as the Phone 3a can handle AI processing on-device for most things that Essential Space can do.There is also no way to share something with Space, whether a photo or a recording unless you initiate the recording through that pesky Essential Key. Of course, you can take screenshots of old screenshots, photos, and websites, but then youre back to the same disjointed process as other Android devices and iPhones.Nothings Essential Space manages to streamline AI into many of the features I use most, like transcription and reminders. The company has teased further functionality, like a focused search for use inside the Space app, and cutesy gimmicks like flip-to-record for your voice notes, which should only bolster what I thought would be weird software curio. It isnt earth-shattering, but put all together, it's one of the best integrations of AI aimed at making your life easier. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/mobile/smartphones/nothing-phone-3a-essential-spaces-ai-powered-app-done-right-163042976.html?src=rss

  • Its official: Chinas BYD is outselling Tesla
    www.fastcompany.com
BYD, Chinas largest maker of electronic vehicles, surpassed $100 billion in sales last year, beating out its beleaguered American competitor Tesla.Per an earnings release on Monday, BYD notched $107 billion in sales last year. Thats decisively above the $97.7 billion that Tesla made in 2024. And in terms of vehicles delivered, BYD shipped 4.27 million hybrid and battery electric vehicles, while Tesla shipped 1.79 million EVs.Last year marked Teslas first sales decline in over a dozen years. As of this writing, shares in BYD Company ADR have risen around 5% today, bringing its stock up more than 55% since the start of the year.News of BYDs big year dominating Chinas EV marketboth in sales numbers and new innovationscomes as Teslas brand is being increasingly battered because of a plummeting stock price in 2025, massive recalls, and protests against company billionaire CEO Elon Musks over-involvement in the U.S. government.BYD is a BFDAside from its record-breaking sales numbers, BYD has most recently made headlines for designing a new ultrafast charging system, an innovation that could be a game changer for the greater EV market.Earlier this month, the company announced that its flash chargers will be able to provide power for 400 kilometers (nearly 250 miles) in five minutes, or about the same amount of time it takes to fill the gas tank of an SUV. BYD plans to roll out 4,000 of the new chargers in China, where building EV infrastructure tends to be a much faster process than it is in the United States.Meanwhile, as climate reporter Dan Gearino writes for Inside Climate News, Tesla is in the midst of a corporate self-destruction unlike any Ive seen. The brands problems range from increasingly wide-scale backlash against CEO Muskwhose fund-slashing in the federal government has cut tens of thousands of jobsto a recall last week of nearly every Cybertruck ever made.Teslas woes have caused its stock to plummet 32% since the start of the year, and Tesla trade-ins recently hit an all-time high.Despite a rough few months, Teslas market valuation remains impressive, landing at around $800 billion compared to BYDs $157 billion, according to Bloomberg. And President Trump continues to implement new tariffs on Chinese imports and roll back EV subsidies. While Tesla stock had been falling since the beginning of 2025, it has been enjoying a rebound more recently, with shares up more than 15% over the past five days, according to data from Yahoo Finance.

  • Social Security Fairness Act: These 3 million Americans are eligible for increased benefits as Biden-era law kicks in
    www.fastcompany.com
Finally, some good news from The Social Security Administration (SSA): Over three million retirees and their spouses, including some teachers, firefighters, police officers, and federal employees, will see bump in their Social Security benefits by the end of the month, thanks to a law President Joe Biden signed before leaving office in January, called the Social Security Fairness Act.Heres what to know about the update to Social Security benefits. What is the Social Security Fairness Act?The Social Security Fairness Act increases monthly Social Security benefits to 3.2 million Americans workers because it repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset, which will trigger retroactive payments and monthly increases to a select group of retirees.According to Yahoo Finance, this benefit is mostly for retirees who receive a government or state pension based on work not covered by Social Security, like a second part-time job or side hustle. For example, this would apply to a teacher who got summers off and worked at a camp each summer. Previously, if that teacher had a pension, it meant they werent getting Social Security benefits from that second job. This new rule changes that. However, as Forbes noted, the bad news is: By reversing the policy, the SSA will nowresume withholding 100%of benefits to recover overpayments starting at the end of March.Who is eligible for the updated Social Security benefits?Who exactly is eligible? As noted above, this law applies to Americans who receive a pension based on work that was not covered by Social Security because they did not pay Social Security taxes. Those Americans could include some but not all of these types of workers:Teachers, firefighters, and police officers in many statesFederal employees covered by the Civil Service Retirement SystemPeople whose work had been covered by a foreign social security systemHow much will Social Security payments increase?Beneficiaries will start receiving their new monthly benefit amount, which could range from a few hundred to over $1,000 larger, based on an average Social Security check of $1,900, in April 2025, for March 2025 benefits. (Social Security benefits are paid one month behind.)Additionally, the SSA increased payments are retroactive back to January 2024, and those who are eligible will get a one-time payment for a lump sum, via direct deposit, by the end of March. (For those who dont have their Social Security direct deposit set up yet, now is the time to do it.)How has Social Security changed in the Trump era?President Donald Trump and his adviser Elon Musk have attacked the Social Security program, claiming that the Social Security Administration is plagued by immense waste andfraud. Those claims have been repeatedly debunked, and a report from the agencys Inspector General found less than 1% of payments in recent years were determined to be improper. The new benefit from the Biden administration also comes as the Trump administrations SSA is about to require millions of Americans to potentially verify their identity in person, even as the federal government plans onclosing offices nationwideand has cutthousands of jobsat the agency as part of the Department of Government Efficiencys (DOGE) slashing of the federal workforce. Many older Americans rely on Social Security as their monthly income, for housing, food, and healthcare.

  • Compals New Framework-Style Laptop Lets You Swap Parts Like LEGO Bricks
    www.yankodesign.com
When you buy a laptop, the end-game is to use it for at least 4-5 years till it becomes old tech, and then you ditch the old laptop and upgrade to something new. However, theres a major flaw with this concept. The only thing that ages in a laptop is a motherboard and its components. The screen doesnt age, nor does the keyboard, nor do the I/O ports. However, we discard a laptop in its entirety when the CPU becomes laggy. Thats like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, resulting in us ditching some extremely capable components just because one part of the laptop is outdated. Sounds ridiculous, doesnt it?Laptops, sadly, arent designed to be upgraded. Theyre made to be slim, and fairly set in their ways. Components arent designed for modularity in most laptops, although companies like Framework and now Compal are changing this narrative. Meet the Adapt X, a laptop concept from Compal that garnered the iF Design Award this year. With an entirely modular architecture, the Adapt X does two clever things firstly, it separates the screen, keyboard, and ports into its individual parts for easy upgrading, but secondly, it also separates them in a way that turns a laptop into a makeshift desktop. Undock the keyboard and the screen itself has a kickstand, allowing you to really make the most of your laptop while working in a flexible setup. Sounds incredibly clever, and I cant help but wonder why nobody ever thought of this before.Designer: CompalThis approach gives the Adapt X a kind of laptop shell with desktop behavior. Want to replace your display? Pop off the screen. Battery acting up? Slide it out. Need more USB-C ports today and an HDMI tomorrow? Hot-swap the entire side panel. Theres a brutal honesty to iteach piece is responsible for its own job, no hidden dependencies, no soldered-on surprises. And somehow, despite all the moving parts, the final product doesnt look like a Frankenstein experiment. It looks intentional. Clean. Almost minimal. While Compal hasnt published full technical specs, whats known so far leans heavily on sustainability and upgradability. The chassis is built from recycled materialsan increasingly common move among OEMs, but one that feels more genuine here because of the design philosophy backing it. Youre not being handed a recycled plastic laptop thatll die in four years. Youre being handed a laptop that wants to live longer than your next phone contract. And if it doesnt, you can surgically remove the weak link and keep going.Of course, its still a concept. Compal is an ODM, not a consumer brand, which means the Adapt X probably wont hit store shelves with its name on it. Instead, this is a proof-of-concept to tempt the Dells and Lenovos of the world into licensing the design. Its a soft nudge to the industry: stop building disposable rectangles. Start thinking like builders again. What sets Adapt X apart from Frameworks platformbeyond the magnetic designis how it compartmentalizes the laptop experience. Framework offers modularity within a conventional shell. Compals take goes a step further by treating the laptop as a desktop in disguise. Every part is a first-class citizen. Youre not upgrading in the laptop. Youre upgrading the laptop.Theres still friction, of course. ODMs like Compal rarely bring products directly to market. That job falls to the Dells, the HPs, the Lenovosbrands that could easily water this down or ignore it entirely. But if even one of them sees the potential here, we might finally break out of the annual laptop refresh cycle thats been clogging landfills and wallets alike. Those are real concerns, given that nobody really jumped on past culture-shifting trends like folding displays or expanding displays (something that Compal even demonstrated at MWC this year). But Adapt X isnt pretending to solve the whole puzzleits just putting the pieces on the table in a different arrangement. If were lucky, someone will pick them up. Maybe even build something lasting. Because for all our talk of sustainability and user rights, most laptops still die too young and too sealed shut. The Adapt X doesnt solve that with a marketing slogan. It solves it with magnets, modules, and a quiet confidence that computers should be made to evolve, not expire. The post Compals New Framework-Style Laptop Lets You Swap Parts Like LEGO Bricks first appeared on Yanko Design.
