  • Indiana Jones And The Great Circle is coming to PS5 next month with physical editions
    metro.co.uk
The best Indy game ever (Bethesda)Bethesda has announced a release date for the PS5 version of Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, including a collectors bundle worth over 170.Microsoft already announced that Indiana Jones And The Great Circle would be released on PlayStation 5 this year, but now we finally have an actual release date. The acclaimed action adventure launched on Xbox Series X/S and PC in December, and is one of the latest examples of a former Xbox exclusive going multi-platform, following the likes of Hi-Fi Rush, Sea Of Thieves, Grounded, and Pentiment. While it previously had a vague spring window, Microsoft has confirmed Indiana Jones And The Great Circle will arrive on PlayStation 5 on Thursday April 17, 2025.The announcement was made in a trailer starring Indiana Jones voice actor Troy Baker and Nolan North, who voices Nathan Drake in the Indy-esque PlayStation exclusive Uncharted (that really seems to be the only reason hes in the trailer, because hes not in the game). The PlayStation 5 version will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro, while anyone who pre-orders the game will receive The Last Crusade DLC pack featuring a travelling solo outfit and a lion tamer whip. The standard edition will set you back 69.99 digitally, through the PlayStation Store. A premium edition, which includes two-day early access, the upcoming Order Of Giants story DLC, a digital artbook, and a Temple Of Doom outfit is priced at 99.99.There is also a collectors bundle featuring a steelbook case, a globe, an adventure journey, and an allmaker relic replica on Bethesdas store, priced at a whopping 171.More TrendingCrucially, unlike the upcoming PlayStation 5 port of Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones And The Great Circle will be sold physically across its standard and premium editions. There is a catch though, as physical versions still require an internet connection to download game and content, so it isnt exactly a plus for preservation. This release date means Indiana Jones And The Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5 will both arrive on PlayStation 5 within the same month, with the latter set to appear on April 29.More Xbox games are expected to be announced for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 in the coming months, with Starfield looking like the next contender. • Linda Cardellini Will Be Jasons Murderous Mom in the Friday the 13th TV Show
    gizmodo.com
As every slasher fan knows, the killer in Friday the 13th isnt Jason Voorheesthat unkillable hockey-masked maniac would come later. In the 1980 original film, the camp-counselor body count is all due to his mother, Pamela, seeking vengeance against those she blames for her sons drowning death. Weve long suspected shell be the central figure in Peacock and A24s prequel series Crystal Lake, and now its confirmed who will play her: Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me, No Good Deed, Freaks and Geeks). This news was widely confirmed in the trades today, though reporter Jeff Sneider said Cardellini was in talks for the role over a month ago. In Deadlines announcement it noted the premise of Crystal Lake is being kept under wraps, but that Cardellinis Pamela is believed to be a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child and takes a dark turn when she loses her son. The future of Crystal Lake was in turmoil after its original shepherd Bryan Fuller was fired last yearbut the ship seemingly righted itself when Brad Caleb Kane (Black Sails, Tokyo Vice, the upcoming It: Welcome to Derry) came aboard as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer. As a side note, Kane has his own background in music (he was the singing voice for Aladdin in the 1992 Disney film, among other credits), so while that singing career premise is only rumored, it seems like a thematic fit. Casting the versatile Cardellini, who seems more than capable of doing Betsy Palmer, the original Pamela Voorhees, proud feels like an energetic burst in the right direction for Crystal Lake. What do you make of this casting, and does it make you even more excited to spend some time at a cursed summer camp? Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

  • Webb Spots Cosmic Tornado in Stunning Detail
    gizmodo.com
Webb has imaged phantasmal billows of bright orange space gas, captured in vibrant detail 630 light-years from Earth. This is the dazzling power of the Webb Space Telescope on full display, revealing the protostellar outflow Herbig Haro 49/50 (or HH 49/50) from the telescopes perch in space, about one million miles from Earth. Herbig-Haro objects are outflows of material produced by a stars jets. The large outflows move through material, creating shock waves in space that heat the material; as the material cools, it produces lightrevealing objects like the glowing orange outflow above. HH 49/50 was dubbed the Cosmic Tornado in 2006, when it was discovered by scientists using NASAs Spitzer Space Telescope. Webb has better resolution than Spitzer, giving scientists a more precise view of the outflows features. Furthermore, the object at the tip of the outflowseen by Spitzer as a blue splotchis now clearly visible, allowing scientists to identify it as a spiral galaxy. Webbs image of HH 49/50 made use of the telescopes Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCAM) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) to reveal the distribution of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and energized dust grains in the outflow. The data will eventually help scientists model the jets properties, as well as how it affects surrounding material.Scientists believe that a protostar named Cederblad 110 IRS4, located about 1.5 light-years from HH 49/50, may drive the jets that are energizing the material in the object. The galaxy seen at the tip of HH 49/50 is much more distant; eventually, HH 49/50 will appear to cover up the galaxy, though according to an ESA release that overlap will take thousands of years.Other Herbig-Haro objects are worth noting. Consider HH 46/47, which looks just like a question mark floating in space. HH 49/50 isnt even the Webb Space Telescopes first foray into the objects; in 2023, the telescope captured the very elongated jets of HH 211, about 1,000 light-years from Earth.

Floating above a meadow, Whidbey Uparati minimizes visual and physical impact on the natural landscape by blending into the site rather than asserting itself upon it. Upon approach, the meadow vegetation surrounds a winding path up a steady slope to the house. The house is a family retreat for meditation, bonding, and uparati "stillness" in sanskrit.Save this picture!Save this picture! The 1,880-square-foot house is perched above the natural surroundings. Meadow grasses and surround a muted cedar-clad building with generous windows, connecting the house audibly and visually to the surrounding nature. A courtyard plan layout surrounds a crushed granite patio with a reflecting pool, fire pit, and a single Stewartia tree. The owners often travel back home to India to partake in meditative retreats. They asked architect Matt Wittman to design a retreat that could serve as an escape from urban living and as site and house for meditative contemplation.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The house consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a multi-purpose room, and a living room and kitchen for communal activities. The transparency of the house invites residents to spend time together and enjoy the rural background, while the house's location on the highest part of the lot allows for panoramic views of surrounding Useless Bay and the Olympic Mountains. During the warmer seasons, the owners can also enjoy a generous west facing deck.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The experience of the house starts with the journey from Bellevue. The owners cross the Puget Sound on the Mukilteo Clinton ferry and head into the outlands of rural Whidbey Island. The driveway draws them closer, winding up a steady slope, through meadow vegetation Blue Oat Grasses, Mexican Feather Grasses, Adagio Maiden Grasses - and summer blooming flowers Cone Flowers and Flowering Sage. "We wanted to 'rewild' the site through landscaping," says Jody Estes, the lead landscape designer. "It was important to remove invasive species and to create a plan for forest restoration." In a future phase, the walking path will lead into the forest to a meditation pavilion.Save this picture!Save this picture! At the end of the path, entry stairs elevate the owners up into the house at its highest point. The low ceiling creates a moment of compression before stepping down into the more spacious living room and kitchen. Further in, the house becomes more transparent and floor-to-ceiling windows frame the views of water and mountains. The interior spaces are a study in simple wood details plywood walls, cedar tongue and groove ceiling, and white oak floor. Facing a limited budget, Wittman Estes designed the house to be simple to construct, reducing the construction timeframe and cost. "The simple wood structure follows a 4' grid," says Wittman. The floors and roof are framed with off-the-shelf TJIs spanning a rational order of columns and walls on 12' and 16' intervals.Save this picture!Save this picture! The house is supported by a Ground Frame foundation system that eliminates concrete for the foundation of the house. This reduces the carbon footprint by 77% relative to the equivalent concrete foundation. The micropile technology acts like roots for the house, anchoring it to the ground both structurally and visually. With an interest in film, the clients wanted the house to provide a cinematic visual composition both for the interior and the exterior. The sequence of the interior spaces allows for light and shadow to shift the perspective and mood of each room, like scenes in a Roger Deakins film. The interior palette draws on neutral tones as its base to allow for the residents' objects to create punctuation of color and visual focus.Save this picture! The house is a contemporary retreat that offers a meditative connection with the natural surroundings. • Famed German robbers skeleton identified after 220-year-long mix-up
    www.popsci.com
An 1803 portrait of Schinderhannes (left). Recent Genetic analyses have now also made it possible to determine the color of his skin, eyes, and hair, as well as positively identifying his skeleton (right). CREDIT: Left: Mainz City Archives BPSP/3894 C. Right: MFHD.A mixture of history, archeology, and several other scientific disciplines, has led scientists to positively identify the remains of Schinderhannes, a legendary German criminal, after a 220-year-old skeletal mix-up. However, the bones of his partner in crime, Schwarzer Jonas remain on the lam. The findings are detailed in a study published March 22 in the journal Forensic Science International: Genetics. The crimes of Schinderhannes and Schwarzer JonasSchinderhannes is a nickname for Johannes Bckler, a criminal who was born sometime in 1779 in Germany, to a family of executioners and slaughterers. He was linked to at least 211 crimes, mostly theft, extortion, and robbery, but potentially murder as well. The portrait depicts Schinderhannes. It was painted in 1803 by the Electorate of the Palatinate painter and graphic artist Karl Matthias Ernst. CREDIT: Mainz City Archives BPSP/3894 C. In 1799, Schinderhannes met Christian ReinhardAKA Schwarzer Jonas or Black Jonas. Schwarzer Jonas was another famous professional criminal who was born around 1774. Schinderhannes and Schwarzer Jonas eventually joined forces to commit crimes together, including burglaries, extortions, and robberies along with some other accomplices in loose alliances.A painting by Karl Matthias Ernst of the robber Christian Reinhard, known as Schwarzer Jonas or Black Jonas and in 1803. CREDIT:Mainz City Archives BPSP/3900. In 1802, the pair was arrested in Mainznow in Germany, then part of Francealongside several other criminals. During the initial investigation, Schinderhannes named more than 100 individuals allegedly connected to his criminal activities. After a nearly month-long trial, Schinderhannes, Schwarzer Jonas, and 18 others were convicted. They were executed by guillotine on November 21, 1803, in front of 30,000 curious onlookers and their remains were collected. In 1805, Jacob Fidelis Ackermann, the first chairholder of anatomy at the University of Heidelberg, bought the two skeletons that he believed belonged to Schinderhannes and Schwarzer Jonas. However, the collection numbers were subsequently mixed-up at the beginning of the 19th century and the skeletons were misattributed.Broken arms and legsIn this new study, an international team of researchers combined several analytical methods toshow that the supposed skeleton of Schwarzer Jonas clearly belonged to Schinderhannes and that the alleged skeleton of Schinderhannes is not that of Schwarzer Jonas.First, they used a few historical documents pertaining to injuries as reference. During a heated argument, Jonas is believed to have broken Schinderhannes arm. Additionally, Schinderhannes injured one of his legs when jumping from the second floor of a tower in Simmern, Germany after he was arrested. Some historical sources even report the leg fracture. Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. They then turned to the more hard science and used isotope analysis to analyze the different types of atoms of the same chemical element. The analysis allowed them to get an idea where both individuals spent their childhood and later years and the Hunsrck area in Germany is a possibility. The chemical analyses of the bones and radiological imaging techniques also induced the presumed age, sex, and possible illnesses of the individuals. All these results, coupled with a careful analysis of historical documents, pointed to a possible mix-up of the two skeletons, Sara Doll, a study co-author, an anatomy dissection specialist at Heidelberg University, and curator of the anatomical collection, said in a translated statement. An analysis of the mitochondrial DNA confirmed this suspicion of a two centuries long mix-up. This important genetic information is only passed on to descendants via the mothers line and helps determine parentage. Comparison with a fifth generation living descendant of Schinderhannes also indicated that the skeleton attributed to Schwarzer Jonas was likely Schinderhannes.Additionally, the team used genetic data to reconstruct Schinderhannes hair, skin, and eye color. There are only a few, sometimes contradictory, contemporary descriptions of his appearance and the surviving paintings or engravings made after his death are based on artistic license. The data suggests that Schinderhannes had brown eyes, dark hair and rather pale skin, Walther Parson, a study co-author and geneticist from the Medical University of Innsbruck in Austria explained.A skeleton lost to timeThe skeleton of Schwarzer Jonas has yet to be identified, and the mystery of who is behind it remains exciting, according to Doll. It could be sitting in a museum somewhere or be completely lost to time.It is possible that it was stolen or borrowed in the belief that it was the skeleton of Schinderhannes and was never returned? Ironically, this mix-up could ultimately have led to our still being in possession of the real skeleton of Schinderhannes today, said Doll. The real skeleton of Schinderhannes has been removed from the Anatomical Collection.for conservation reasons. Visitors can see an artists replica of the skeleton and a model of Schinderhannes himself.

  • Buying carbon credits to fight climate change? Heres what to know

ClimateBuying carbon credits to fight climate change? Heres what to knowProblems of additionality and leakage mean you might not be making the contribution you think More than 2 billion carbon credits have been sold on the voluntary carbon market. Critics question whether all of those credits have conferred true emissions savings.Illustration by Alex WilliamsonBy Alka Tripathy-Lang1 hour agoTaylor Swift may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think about climate change. But more than once, the singer has found herself in the middle of a media storm over her carbon dioxide emissions. Swift regularly hops aboard her private jet, as she did in 2024 to get from a concert in Tokyo to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas the next day. A spokesperson said that Swift purchases more than enough carbon credits to offset her jet-setting. But fans and haters alike want to know: Is it enough? If you travel by plane, even in less-glamorous economy, youve probably faced a similar question. Airlines often offer passengers the option to pay a few extra dollars to offset their share of the flights emissions. Its considered the climate-friendly thing to do. By purchasing carbon credits, youre paying someone somewhere to take some actionprobably saving an existing forest or perhaps planting treesthat reduces total global emissions enough to cover your contribution. You can take off without a guilty conscience. Supposedly.
