  • Marvels Avengers: Doomsday reveal proves the MCU is just a machine for resurrecting Loki
    www.polygon.com
Superhero universes are famed for their revolving-door approach to character death: You can hardly name a major comics character whos never had some sort of death-and-resurrection arc. But even compared to the genre-standard number rate of deaths and returns, Tom Hiddlestons Loki whos apparently set to appear in 2026s Avengers: Doomsday, according to Marvels stunty casting livestream has pushed the envelope. In the space of about half a dozen MCU stories, spanning from 2011s Thor to Loki season 2, Hiddlestons god of mischief has died, seemed to die, or otherwise been removed from the board four times already, and yet hell be back for Doomsday once again.Lest we forget, Loki had his first dramatic death scene at the end of 2011s Thor, when he responded to the latest rejection from his adoptive father Odin by allowing himself to fall into the abyss of space, like a classic Disney villain dropping to their death. He returned in Thor: The Dark World, where he had a much clearer and even more dramatic on-screen death, but it turned out he faked that to bamboozle his big brother Thor and take Odins place in Valhalla via trickery. Then, after an apparent turn toward heroism, he was absolutely obliterated by Thanos in the opening scenes of Avengers: Infinity War. But the MCU simply spun off a new Loki: an alternate-timeline version who escaped during the Avengers time heist in Avengers: Endgame, and started working for the Time Variance Authority. Finally, the Loki TV series appeared to end with Loki sacrificing his freedom and his future to save a potentially infinite multiverse of parallel timelines, transforming his godly form into a cosmic structure that holds time together. And now, Marvels announcement suggests, hell be back in some capacity for Avengers: Doomsday. We should take a moment to say that its likely that the massive set of actors nearly 30 names! that Marvel revealed today isnt the movies complete hero/villain cast list. The odds of there being no surprise cameos from other MCU characters seems low. Given the obvious multiverse-jumping plans needed to bring the Fox X-Men characters into the MCU, that could even include characters who dont seem like theyre in a position to show up, like Chris Evans Captain America, who currently has the body of an 80-year-old man, or Scarlett Johanssons Black Widow, who, Johansson has repeatedly pointed out, is dead. But obviously, Marvel would want to keep some surprises under wraps for the movie itself. So Hiddleston is a particularly notable part of todays announcement, given where we last saw his character. (Same goes for James Marsdens Cyclops, who died back in 2006s X-Men: The Last Stand, and Channing Tatums Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine, who was largely an inside-joke character, and was left behind in a cosmic junk heap in an alternate reality.) The wrinkle here is that Loki isnt dead or in the wrong universe: Hes supposedly holding the multiverse together through sheer force of will. He had a very complete character arc that culminated in making a huge sacrifice for the cosmos. And hes also in Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel doesnt care to keep that a secret. This isnt a complaint about Marvels plans for the movie. Its more a statement of awe and appreciation. Awe and appreciation for the clearly enduring appeal to MCU producers, not just MCU fans of Tom Hiddlestons charm, and his willingness to work. Is the most indelible Marvel movie character Tony Stark as Iron Man? Chris Evans as Captain America? Or is it, in fact, Tom Hiddleston as Loki ? The question lies before us, and answering it leaves us burdened with glorious purpose.

  • Each of Marvels Avengers: Doomsday reveals made me a little less excited for Avengers: Doomsday
    www.polygon.com
On Wednesday morning, Marvel Studios kicked off an agonizingly slow, exceedingly fun casting announcement for Avengers: Doomsday. Marvels five-and-a-half-hour livestream panned across chairs with actors names on their backs to let us know which heroes would be appearing in the next Avengers movie, showing off a new reveal roughly every 12 minutes.Unfortunately, as annoying as a five-plus-hour PR stunt livestream sounds on paper, I had a good time watching it. Each new reveal felt exciting, and it became a fun little habit to check on the stream every 15 minutes, then dash over to social media and group chats to see how everyone was reacting to the latest name revealed, whether it was someone expected (like Anthony Mackie) or a surprise (like Kelsey Grammer). But by the time the camera hit Patrick Stewarts chair, nearly four hours into the stream, I was getting awfully weary not of the livestream announcement gimmick, but of Avengers: Doomsday itself.Dont get me wrong: Im excited for the next set of Avengers movies, and Ive been a proponent of Doctor Doom joining the cast since before Disney announced, then scrapped, Kang as the Multiverse Sagas villain. But seeing that infinite row of chairs, each subtly offset from the last by just a few inches, I could really feel all the ways in which Doomsday writer-directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo might be biting off a little more than they can chew.#AvengersDoomsday. Now in production. pic.twitter.com/G84UVU8HOc Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) March 26, 2025Doom might be Marvels greatest overall character, and hes certainly its best villain. Dooms stories across the years have had tragedy and pathos. He has a multiverse-dominating ego, and the power to carry out that ambition. In any given story, hes equally likely to try to kill the Avengers or help them take out a rival supervillain, just to open up space for his own world-conquering schemes in the future. In other words, Doctor Doom deserves plenty of time during his own set of movies to bask in the glow of the spotlight and be the malevolent star of the show especially considering the dump truck full of money that Disney must have backed up to Robert Downey Jr.s house to get him to put on the mask. But its hard to imagine Doom getting the time he needs when Doomsday is also tasked with bringing all these goddamned X-Men into the MCU.During Wednesdays show, Marvel played things cool at first. The streams producers let the camera pan over Kelsey Grammers chair, seemingly confirming that The Marvels end-credits scene would have a role to play in the action. Then, eventually, the camera let us in on a few more secrets: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, and Channing Tatum are all joining the cast, too.Suddenly, were staring down the barrel of half a dozen or more X-Men characters getting introduced to the MCU in this very movie, along with Doom. For any shortcomings Avengers: Infinity War might have had, it was mostly working with a cast of characters that had each been established by one or more of their own movies by that point. Doomsdays cast, by comparison, mostly consists of members of the Thunderbolts and the Fantastic Four, two teams whose movies havent been released yet, along with members of the X-Men who havent even been teased in the MCU yet and who, in some cases, havent been in an X-Men movie since 2006s X-Men: The Last Stand. That just seems like too much for one movie to handle.Im worried that at some point, in throwing together so many characters, multiverses, and cinematic franchises, Avengers: Doomsday is going to feel more like a puzzle designed to fit all these things into place than like a film in its own right. After all, if youre going to make a movie about bringing this many different characters into contact, it certainly seems like the introductions will take so long that theres hardly going to be room for team-ups or fights. But maybe none of this will matter much in the end, anyway. Co-director and co-writer Joe Russo told Omelete that while Avengers: Endgame was a definitive ending for a certain MCU era, Doomsday and its follow-up, 2027s Avengers: Secret Wars, are intended to be the starting point of something new. So maybe Wednesdays parade of casting announcements was mostly just a list of characters who are going to get killed off in Doomsdays first 10 minutes to make room for the new MCU. If thats not what happens, I hope Downey Jr.s Doctor Doom at least demands the spotlight he deserves.
