• Why Intentional Clutter Is the New Maximalism
    www.elledecor.com
The year 2020 feels like centuries ago. We were inhabiting stark, whitewashed kitchens and minimalist bedrooms filled with beige furnishings, gray-scale wallpaper, and, yes, the whitest of white linens (good luck, toddler moms). Cluttered shelves, of course, were unthinkable. Ditto errant decor objects, unconcealed storage, and really any signs of life. And then a pandemic hit and we had to inhabit our homes all day: Thats when we ditched perfectionism.According to this years Pinterest Predicts Trend Report, the more is more aesthetic is poised to be one of 2025s biggest trends, with the search term eclectic maximalism experiencing a 215-percent increase on Pinterest year over year, and vintage maximalism spiking by 260% during the same time period. For some, leaning into maximalism means bringing in a few more well-placed objets dart; for others, it looks like an all-out color-wash. But for almost everyone, it means leaning more fully into a lived-in look that has, this year, only gained steamand its own hashtag. First, TikTokers leaned hard into what they called clustering (we all blew our budget at shops that celebrate the abundance model, like Girls Who Cluster). Then, a recluttering movement took over, threatening to give the Home Edit ladies a seizure. But the intentional clutter trend was the TikTok firestorm that has really gained headwayand one we can really get behind.First, dont think this trend gives your partner leeway to leave his dirty socks on the floor. Its not the end-of-day just-cooked-dinner, didnt-finish-my-laundry, still-unpacking-deliveries untidiness. Rather, its the curation of beloved objects to create a lived-in aesthetic that shows off who you are. It requires a sharp eye and keen design. Below, we break down how to achieve the look without getting featured on the next season of Hoarders. Simon UptonArt dealers Patricia Ortiz Monasterio and Jaime Riestra have crafted a family home in Mexico City that encompasses the regions rich folk art traditions.Make it PersonalIts the whole point of the intentional clutter trend, really. This curation of items can reflect your personality, interests, and memories. Bring in souvenirs from your travels, thrifted pieces, or items that speak to your hobbies. Layer these sentimental items with trinkets, books, and art for a look that feels lived-in and specific to you. That said, not everything has to be sentimental. A tray filled with your favorite perfume bottles, jewelry, and lotions can be a functional (yet chic) way to reflect how you live your life, even if every item on it came from Amazon. Create CollectionsYou probably already have a collection of some sort, and this trend is an opportunity to show it off. Mount your vintage plate collection on the wall, give your coffee table books the moment they deserve, or bring in a tiny bowl for your matchbox obsession. These items will feel more intentional when given a vignette that provides a little peek into what makes you unique.Noe DeWittIn the living room of this sumptuous home by Redd Kaihoi, busy never looked so good. Make it LayeredWhen working with a variety of items, layering is crucial to creating visual interest that doesnt feel like an eye sore. To accomplish this, start by varying the heights and depths of objects. Place taller items like vases or plants at the back and shorter ones in front, and layer smaller items on top of books or trays for a multi-level effect. You can also mix textureswood, metal, glassfor added dimensional interest. Layering artwork by overlapping frames or leaning pieces against the wall adds depth, making the arrangement feel dynamic and effortlessly thought out. Retain Some Empty Surface SpaceLeaving areas free of objects allows the eye to rest and provides contrast to the busy, layered sections, giving the overall design a sense of intentionality and thoughtfulness. Empty space is essential to maintaining balance. To achieve it, start by focusing on smaller, curated groupings of items rather than covering every inch of a surface. Create clusters of objects, leaving gaps between them to give each grouping room to breathe. Shore up some space on larger surfaces, like tables or shelves, to use as anchors for a few key pieces, leaving some areas open. This balance helps highlight the objects you've chosen while preventing the space from feeling overcrowded. • New Apple TV+ hit found a clever way to reject feedback from Apple execs
    9to5mac.com
This weeks big Apple TV+ debut, The Studio, has impressed critics and already climbed to the #2 spot on Apples top charts, trailing only Severance. In a new interview, co-creator and star Seth Rogen reveals how the shows unique format was the perfect shield against unwanted notes from Apple execs. The Studio was shot entirely in oners, which helped fend off unwanted exec notesThe Studio centers around Rogens lead character, who was just appointed head of a film studio. One way the show heightens the stress and absurdity of its comedy is by being shot entirely in oners. Meaning, scenes are shot in continuous takes without cuts. Its a powerful artistic tool, but apparently it also helped Rogen and his creative team fend off unwanted notes from Apple TV+ studio execs.Ethan Shanfeld writes at Variety:In a sweet twist of irony, the series third episode harps on the loathsome concept of the studio note and the oners allowed Rogen to dodge Apples feedback almost entirely. Because of the way we shot it, essentially nothing could be done after the episode, Rogen says. Apple would give us notes, but the answer was always We cant do that. Can you take out this line? Nope. Could you go from this line to this line? Nope, we cant do any of that.No doubt shooting The Studio in oners was a monumental task for the creative team. Episode 2 gives us a fascinating peek into what that may have been like. But its kind of hilarious how the technique was also a clever way to fend off suggested changes from execs.Apple doubted The Studios ability to land celebrity cameosVarietys extensive interview with Rogen also includes this fun tidbit:With scripts including roles for Charlize Theron, Paul Dano and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos and dozens more Apples main concern was that Rogen and Goldberg wouldnt be able to secure all the cameos written into their first drafts.Apple was very skeptical and worried, Rogen says. They said early on, You will never be able to get all the cameos you need to make this show. They could not have said it more definitively than that.Clearly, Rogen succeeded where Apple thought he would fail. And I imagine that when a potential season 2 rolls around, even more Hollywood talent may be eager to jump in and join the fun.Have you watched The Studio yet on Apple TV+? What are your thoughts? • Apple legally responsible for age verification of App Store users in Utah
    9to5mac.com
Apple and Google will become legally responsible for age verification of app store users in Utah, after the App Store Accountability Act was signed into law. It takes effect on May 7, giving the tech giants a little time to implement it.Both companies have opposed the legislation, but similar laws look set to follow in at least eight more US states The age verification problemThe issue has been an ongoing battle between Apple and Google on the one side, and social media companies on the other. Most social media apps have a minimum age requirement of 13, but companies have been accused of making little to no effort to verify someones age when they open an account.Meta began arguing in 2023that app stores are in a better position to do this, withZuckerberg doubling down on this last year. A growing number of state legislatures seem to have been persuaded of this argument, with at least nine of them working on passing bills to pass the responsibility to app stores.First law passed in UtahAs Engadget reports, Utah has now signed the App Store Accountability Act into law.Under this law, people in Utah will need to be over age 18 to make a new account with an app store; underage users will need to link their account to a parents so that the adult can give permission for the child to use certain apps []Meta, Snap and X have supported the measure. We applaud Governor Cox and the State of Utah for being the first in the nation to empower parents and users with greater control over teen app downloads, and urge other states to consider this groundbreaking approach, the three companies said in ajoint statementWednesday. This approach spares users from repeatedly submitting personal information to countless individual apps and online services. Its likely that both Apple and Google will mount legal challenges in an attempt to have the law overturned.9to5Macs TakeThere are two solid arguments for passing this responsibility to Apple and Google.First, its more practical for a handful of app store providers to carry out the check once per account, rather than each individual app developer having to do it. Additionally, both companies often have credit card details on file for adult account holders, simplifying the task. Second, date of birth documentation is sensitive personal data. Id be way happier trusting Apple with that information than I would disclosing it to the likes of Meta and X.iOS 18.4 sees Apple ask your age when you set up a new iPhone, though the company doesnt currently verify this.Photo:AppleAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • One of Elon Musk's DOGE Kids Reportedly Helped a Cybercrime Ring
    futurism.com
The teenage Department of Government Efficiency employee who goes by the online moniker of no, we are not kidding "Big Balls" once helped out a serious cybercrime ring, .In 2022, when he was still in high school, the now 19-year-old Edward Coristine ran a company called DiamondCDN that provided a type of web service known as a content delivery network. One of its users was a website belonging to a group of cybercriminals known as "EGodly," which openly bragged about trafficking stolen data and cyberstalking an FBI agent. (DiamondCDN probably attracted the hacking outfit because its website promised it had "no business inspecting user content.")Ruthless hackers they may be, the "EGodly" blackhats were courteous enough to let Coristine know just how much they appreciated his company's help."We extend our gratitude to our valued partners DiamondCDN for generously providing us with their amazing DDoS protection and caching systems, which allow us to securely host and safeguard our website," the cybercriminal ring wrote in a Telegram message, as quoted by Reuters.Coristine, and his irreverent nickname, have become emblematic of Elon Musk's DOGE effort to blitzkrieg the federal government with next to no oversight. Plenty of scrutiny has been cast on the qualifications of its extraordinarily young staff, who are nonetheless being granted alarming access to sensitive federal systems, with high positions in government to boot. Coristine, for instance, is listed as a "senior adviser" at the State Department and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Reuters found.Seemingly, little has been done to vet these arch-auditors. One resigned and then was rehired after his incredibly racist tweets surfaced. Another, it was discovered, professionally sold ketamine. Coristine himself was once fired by a cybersecurity firm for leaking its company secrets. Now you can add another skeleton to Coristine's formidable closet. The cybercriminal group that his firm provided services to, EGodly, has claimed that it's stolen crypto, hijacked phone numbers, and broken into law enforcement email accounts in Latin America and Eastern Europe. These claims couldn't be independently verified by Reuters. What is verifiable, however, was that the group targeted a former FBI agent who it believed was investigating them. It began by digging up and sharig personal information on the agent, like where he lived, according to Reuters. Eventually, one member filmed themselves driving past his house, screaming "EGodly says you're a bitch!"According to the former agent, the FBI was investigating Egodly because of its connection to swatting, or calling in a fake emergency so that law enforcement send a heavily armed team to a location."These are bad folks," the former FBI agent said. "They're not a pleasant group."While it doesn't appear that Coristine was deeply involved with the group, that this suspect part of his history seemingly didn't preclude him from tampering with federal systems should be alarming."This stuff was not in the distant past," Nitin Natarajan, who served as the deputy director of CISA under president Joe Biden, told Reuters. "The recency of the activity and the types of groups he was associated would definitely be concerning."Share This Article

  • APT36 Spoofs India Post Website to Infect Windows and Android Users with Malware
    thehackernews.com
Mar 27, 2025Ravie LakshmananMobile Security / MalwareAn advanced persistent threat (APT) group with ties to Pakistan has been attributed to the creation of a fake website masquerading as India's public sector postal system as part of a campaign designed to infect both Windows and Android users in the country.Cybersecurity company CYFIRMA has attributed the campaign with medium confidence to a threat actor called APT36, which is also known as Transparent Tribe. The fraudulent website mimicking India Post is named "postindia[.]site." Users who land on the site from Windows systems are prompted to download a PDF document, whereas those visiting from an Android device are served a malicious application package ("indiapost.apk") file."When accessed from a desktop, the site delivers a malicious PDF file containing 'ClickFix' tactics," CYFIRMA said. "The document instructs users to press the Win + R keys, paste a provided PowerShell command into the Run dialog, and execute it potentially compromising the system."An analysis of the EXIF data associated with the dropped PDF shows that it was created on October 23, 2024, by an author named "PMYLS," a likely reference to Pakistan's Prime Minister Youth Laptop Scheme. The domain impersonating India Post was registered about a month later on November 20, 2024.The PowerShell code is designed to download a next-stage payload from a remote server ("88.222.245[.]211") that's currently inactive. On the other hand, when the same site is visited from an Android device, it urges users to install their mobile app for a "better experience." The app, once installed, requests extensive permissions that allow it to harvest and exfiltrate sensitive data, including contact lists, current location, and files from external storage."The Android app changes its icon to mimic a non-suspicious Google Accounts icon to conceal its activity, making it difficult for the user to locate and uninstall the app when they want to remove it," the company said. "The app also has a feature to force users to accept permissions if they are denied in the first instance."The malicious app is also designed to run in the background continuously even after a device restart, while explicitly seeking permissions to ignore battery optimization. "ClickFix is increasingly being exploited by cybercriminals, scammers, and APT groups, as reported by other researchers observing its use in the wild," CYFIRMA said. "This emerging tactic poses a significant threat as it can target both unsuspecting and tech-savvy users who may not be familiar with such methods."Found this article interesting? • Happy Death Day Director Says Theres Been Weird Sequel Talks
    screencrush.com
Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon has played down the idea of a third film. The 50-year-old filmmaker, who was at the helm of the original 2017 black comedy slasher and its 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, explained that despite being ready to go and start writing, he has had weird talks with Universal and Blumhouse. He told SFX: I didnt write the script because I never want to count my chickens and get ahead of myself. But I was ready to go and start writing this, but then it was sort of like, it was weird. We had a lot of fits and spurts in terms of maybe well do it. At one point they talked about it becoming a three-part event thing for [streaming service] Peacock, which was kind of weird.I was like, Alriiiiiight! Whatever it takes. screencrush.com
Marvels slow burn reveal of theAvengers: Doomsday cast was a very clever feat of marketing. 100,000fans were glued to a live feed of some directors chairs on YouTube for an entire afternoon. The names on those directors chairs ranged from the obvious to the genuinely surprising. Some of the biggest surprises of the day, though, were the names thatdidntshow up on those chairs before Robert Downey Jr. walked into the shot to bring the live feed to a close. While more Marvel heroes and villains will surely appear inDoomsday than were confirmed today, the first 27 (!) namesin theDoomsday cast focused primarily on a few former Avengers, plus the casts ofThunderbolts,The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the old Fox X-Men movies. That meant itdid notmention some of Marvels biggest stars, including some men and women who have appeared in a dozen or more MCU films and series, and talents who have headlined the studios biggest box-office hits. Now, this is Marvel were talking about; the only thing they like more than surprising people is by engineering an elaboratedeception to surprise people. • The Download: how people fall for pig butchering schemes, and saving glaciers
    www.technologyreview.com
This is today's edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology. Inside a romance scam compoundand how people get tricked into being there Gaveshs journey had started, seemingly innocently, with a job ad on Facebook promising work he desperately needed. Instead, he found himself trafficked into a business commonly known as pig butcheringa form of fraud in which scammers form romantic or other close relationships with targets online and extract money from them. The Chinese crime syndicates behind the scams have netted billions of dollars, and they have used violence and coercion to force their workers, many of them people trafficked like Gavesh, to carry out the frauds from large compounds, several of which operate openly in the quasi-lawless borderlands of Myanmar. We spoke to Gavesh and five other workers from inside the scam industry, as well as anti-trafficking experts and technology specialists. Their testimony reveals how global companies, including American social media and dating apps and international cryptocurrency and messaging platforms, have given the fraud business the means to become industrialized. By the same token, it is Big Tech that may hold the key to breaking up the scam syndicatesif only these companies can be persuaded or compelled to act. Read the full story. Peter Guest & Emily Fishbein How to save a glacier Theres a lot we dont understand about how glaciers move and how soon some of the most significant ones could collapse into the sea. That could be a problem, since melting glaciers could lead to multiple feet of sea-level rise this century, potentially displacing millions of people who live and work along the coasts. A new group is aiming not only to further our understanding of glaciers but also to look into options to save them if things move toward a worst-case scenario, as my colleague James Temple outlined in his latest story. One idea: refreezing glaciers in place. The whole thing can sound like science fiction. But once you consider how huge the stakes are, I think it gets easier to understand why some scientists say we should at least be exploring these radical interventions. Read the full story. Source: ODonnellBrownGlasgow city council has approved ODonnellBrowns plans for more than 300 homes on a derelict riverside site which has been vacant for nearly four decades. The councils planning committee has unanimously approved developerNew City Visions scheme at the southern boundary ofGovan Graving Docks. The development is set to be delivered in phases and will include 74 one-bedroom flats, 208 two-bedroom flats, and 22 three-bedroom flats. The scheme forms part of a long-term regeneration plan for the former dry docks, which were historically used for ship maintenance and repair.According to the developer, around 20% of the site will be occupied by housing, with the remaining 80% intended to be transferred to community ownership on completion of the regeneration project. Future plans for the site include the reopening of Dock No.1 for historic ship repair, a proposed heritage park, and a visitor attraction located in the sites only remaining structure, the original pumphouse. The first phase of housing will begin with 60 apartments on Clydebrae Street. A second phase will see a 12-storey block constructed to the west of Dock No.2, while a final stage will involve buildings of between four and ten storeys fronting Govan Road.Jennifer ODonnell, director at ODonnellBrown and lead architect on the project, said: This approval marks a significant result for Glasgow and a major step forward in the regeneration of the Govan Graving Docks, a site of national importance. The project has benefitted from years of consultation with the local community and Glasgow City Council to ensure that it meets the needs of the area while respecting the sites rich history.Source: ODonnellBrownSource: ODonnellBrownSource: ODonnellBrown1/3show captionNew City Visions chair, Harry ODonnell, said: There is a clear need for new homes across Glasgow, and this development will help meet that demand while complementing Govans wider regeneration.Over the past three years, weve listened to local voices and worked closely with planning officers to develop a proposal that respects the docks heritage while delivering much-needed regeneration. The Scottish Government previously allocated 2.4 million in funding to support the sites transformation into green space.
