OpinionMarch 27, 20254 min readRising Acceptance of Political Violence Promises Nothing Good for the U.S.Left-leaning Americans at peaceful demonstrations are becoming more likely to believe that political violence will be necessary to save AmericaBy Dana R. Fisher A participant holds a "We are not ok" sign during the "Shut Down the Coup" protest on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on March 10, 2025 in Washington, DC. Kayla Bartkowski/Getty ImagesSince Donald Trump took office on January 20, his second administration has declared war on science and scientists. The Trump administrations first few weeks included a federal funding freeze, firing of top scientists across government agencies, removing scientific data, canceling scientific advisory panels, and much more.In response, Stand Up for Science rallies took place in 32 locations across the U.S. on March 7. The organizers coordinated the day of action to defend science as a public good and pillar of social, political, and economic progress. While the events showed solidarity with federal workers and support for science, the data my team collected from participants provide alarming evidence about how public sentiment is changing and what left-leaning Americans believe will be necessary to protect American democracy.Violence is increasingly on the table. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. Following the same methodology I used to study the Resistance that pushed back against the first Trump Administration and its policies, as well as the beginnings of Resistance 2.0, we collected survey data as people assembled in front of the Lincoln Memorial and listened to speeches. In total, 342 people completed the survey (representing an 81 percent response rate). In many ways, the people who turned out for this event were very similar to those who participated in the 2017 March for Science: they were predominantly female, white, highly educated, and had supported the Democratic candidateClinton in 2016 and Harris in 2024in the recent presidential election.Amanda Montaez; Source: Dana R. Fisher (data)In other ways, the participants were different: they were less civically engaged than participants in the March for Science, which took place at the beginning of the first Trump administration. Fewer reported contacting elected officials, attending town hall meetings, or contacting the media to express a view than in 2017.The current moment is also quite different as the Trump administration works to reduce the federal workforce, which has involved mass firings of scientists at various agencies in the U.S. government. As a result, the top motivation of participants at the demonstration was the federal workforce reduction and the federal funding freeze, at 81 percent. The second most popular motivation for joining the event was climate change (73 percent, versus 93 percent reported by participants at the 2017 March for Science). In addition to the usual battery of questions I have been asking participants of demonstrations for years, we recently began asking protest participants an adapted version of a question from the American Values Survey to gauge their perspectives on political violence. The results from this recent demonstration are chilling and show a clear trend: more than one third of participants at the Stand Up for Science Rally in Washington, D.C. (35 percent) reported that they believed that because things have gotten so far off track, Americans may have to resort to violence in order to save our country. This percentage is slightly higher than the 33 percent reporting support for political violence when we surveyed at the Peoples March two days before Trumps second inauguration in January. Also notable: in the roughly seven weeks since the Peoples March, the percentage of left-leaning Americans who are participating in peaceful protest and who report they will not support political violence has dropped significantly.A chart, below, includes our findings from the recent demonstrations along with data we collected from a nationally representative sample of 1,000 Americans via YouGov on the week before the election, along with the most recent wave of the American Values Survey.Amanda Montaez; Sources: Dana R. Fisher; Challenges to Democracy: The 2024 Election in Focus: Findings from the 2024 American Values Survey. Public Religion Research Institute, October 11, 2024 (data)To be clear, protest participants are not representative of all Democrats or even left-leaning Americans. Nevertheless, these data clearly document that support for political violence is not found only among Republicans and Trump supporters. Left-leaning Americans participating in peaceful, legally permitted demonstrations are starting to believe that political violence will be necessary to save America.More rallies are coming, with a huge march called for April 5 that is being coordinated by a coalition of left-leaning groups, including Indivisible, the Womens March, and the new group 50501. The theme of the protest, as described by Indivisible, is to stop Trump and Musks illegal billionaire power grab. So far the organizers from Stand Up for Science have not joined the coalition, but theres no question that people who care about science will be in the crowd. In fact, Indivisibles call to action includes declaring that Trump and Musk keep their hands off personal data, cancer research, clean energy, libraries and more. We will see there if the views of those resisting Trumps policies have hardened. As we witness Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, be treated like a folk hero, and social media sites flood with references to assassination, its important to stress the dangers to a country teetering on the verge of political violence. Research documents how political violence leads to political repression and demobilizes social movements. In other words, not only is political violence dangerous, but it can also backfire. These unintended consequences are frightening to contemplate. While the Trump administration appears to have declared war on science and scientists, the data we collected should make us all wonder if scientists and those who support science may be getting ready to declare war right back. This is an opinion and analysis article, and the views expressed by the author or authors are not necessarily those of Scientific American.

The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann "curious" about how people will react to season 2, as elephant in the room is dodgedJackson of a gun.Image credit: Naughty Dog/HBO/Eurogamer News by Victoria Kennedy News Reporter Published on March 27, 2025 Neil Druckmann is "really curious" about how viewers will react when The Last of Us season two debuts next month. The Last of Us' second season is set to air in just over two weeks time, and will pick up the lives of Joel and Ellie several years after the events of season one. Along with awards and praise, in 2023 the first season was reported to be the most-watched HBO Max show in Europe, and as such, there are some pretty high hopes for The Last of Us' second season, mine included. However, as those who have played Part 2 will know, there are some plot points that may surprise and shock viewers unfamiliar with the source material. So, is Naughty Dog exec and showrunner Neil Druckmann nervous or scared about the reception, especially given some of the volatile abuse following The Last of Us Part 2? Well, no, he isn't.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Does Anyone Really Want Long Games Anymore? Watch on YouTube"When we're making it, we're just so focused on making it that I try not to think about what the reaction will be, but I'm very excited and curious to see what the reaction will be from people who are not familiar with the story and people who are familiar with the story, going over similarities and differences," Druckmann told GameInformer."I loved that conversation over season one, and I'm very much looking forward to it across season two."During the same interview, Druckmann said he "used to be more concerned with fan reaction", adding he had "experienced the worst of it when [Naughty Dog] had the leaks and Covid hit with the second game", but has now "stopped caring" about all that."I've always operated under that, 'I'm not going to be worried about what the fan reaction is going to be. I don't have any control over that so I'm not going to be worried about it'."What I do have control over is the crafting of the thing that's in front of me and leading a team to do that. So I want to make sure that we make something we're extremely proud of, that we're very thoughtful in making. And then we put it out into the world and the reaction is not up to us. That's up to our fans and how they react."As to that particular moment that may provoke reactions (won't spoil it here), well Druckmann refrained from commenting on whether or not it will feature in the second season. He dodged the Ellie-phant in the room, if you will. "I'm not confirming or denying anything," Druckmann said. Image credit: HBO/Naughty DogThe second season of The Last of Us will kick off next month, on 13th April, and will comprise seven episodes, with one of those episodes being "quite big" in length. Spores have also been confirmed for The Last of Us' second season, with the showrunners promising viewers "a different evolution" of infection.Earlier this week, the showrunners discussed the introduction of new character Abby (played in the show by Kaitlyn Dever), and why it will be different from The Last of Us Part 2.

Credit: Ashley Pon/Bloomberg Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Companys pledge to spend an extra $100 billion on advanced manufacturing plants in the US will do little to help the country restore its global lead in chipmaking, according to Pat Gelsinger, who was forced out as chief executive of Intel late last year. His comments come less than a month after the White House hailed the investment from TSMC, the worlds largest chip manufacturer, as an important milestone in efforts to bring production of the most advanced semiconductors back on to US soil.If you dont have R&D in the US, you will not have semiconductor leadership in the US, Gelsinger said. All of the R&D work of TSMC is in Taiwan, and they havent made any announcements to move that. The former Intel chief added, however, that President Donald Trumps tariff threats had at least been incrementally beneficial for the US by giving chip manufacturers like TSMC more incentive to locate their facilities in the country. The Trump administration has leaned heavily on TSMC amid doubts about Intels ability to regain the global manufacturing lead it lost to the Taiwanese company a decade ago.Gelsingers departure late last year was widely seen as a repudiation by the company of his complex turnaround plan, which included trying to rebuild Intels manufacturing base. His successor, Lip-Bu Tan, appointed earlier this month, has yet to set out his strategy. The former Intel chief executive would not comment on whether he had fallen out with Intels directors over strategy, but indicated he had lost their confidence less than four years into his five-year plan.I wasnt done with the five-plus years when the board made a directional change, he said.TSMC has said that the only development work it plans to carry out it in the US will be on the process technology it already has in production, and that its core research and development will remain in Taiwan.Unless youre designing the next-generation transistor technology in the US, you do not have leadership in the US, said Gelsinger. He was speaking in an interview this week after becoming a partner at Playground Global, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm that specializes in deep tech investments, including in fields like quantum computing and new chip making technologies.Despite losing out in the cutting-edge process technology used in chip manufacturing, Gelsinger said the US still had a global edge in many advanced technologies that are likely to determine future leadership in artificial intelligence. He also brushed off suggestions that Chinese AI company DeepSeek, which shocked US technology experts and investors with its low-cost technology earlier this year, had posed a serious challenge to American companies.DeepSeek was good engineering, it wasnt core innovations. It wasnt major breakthroughs, he said.Start-ups backed by Playground include xLight, whose advanced lasers could play a part in future generations of lithography needed to make chips. Other investments include PsiQuantum, the first quantum computing company that has embarked on building a large-scale quantum machine, and d-Matrix, one of a number of start-ups trying to leapfrog Nvidia in making the chips needed to run AI systems, a task known as inference. While at Intel, Gelsinger failed to make up ground against Nvidia in AI chips, though he said this week that new technologies were needed to bring AI into the mainstream.AI, as exciting as it is, is much too expensive, he said. We have to have dramatic reductions in the cost of inference for it to be truly deployed in every aspect of humanity. 2025 The Financial Times Ltd. All rights reserved. • Pete Hegseth, Mike Waltz, Tulsi Gabbard: Private Data and Passwords of Senior U.S. Security Officials Found Online
    www.spiegel.de
Private contact details of the most important security advisers to U.S. President Donald Trump can be found on the internet. DER SPIEGEL reporters were able to find mobile phone numbers, email addresses and even some passwords belonging to the top officials. To do so, the reporters used commercial people search engines along with hacked customer data that has been published on the web. Those affected by the leaks include National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Most of these numbers and email addresses are apparently still in use, with some of them linked to profiles on social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn. They were used to create Dropbox accounts and profiles in apps that track running data. There are also WhatsApp profiles for the respective phone numbers and even Signal accounts in some cases. As such, the reporting has revealed an additional grave, previously unknown security breach at the highest levels in Washington. Hostile intelligence services could use this publicly available data to hack the communications of those affected by installing spyware on their devices. It is thus conceivable that foreign agents were privy to the Signal chat group in which Gabbard, Waltz and Hegseth discussed a military strike.Numbers Linked to Signal AccountsIt remains unclear, however, whether this extremely problematic chat was conducted using Signal accounts linked to the private telephone numbers of the officials involved. Tulsi Gabbard has declined to comment. DER SPIEGEL reporting has demonstrated, though, that privately used and publicly accessible telephone numbers belonging to her and Waltz are, in fact, linked to Signal accounts. The U.S. newsmagazine The Atlantic revealed on Monday that Gabbard, Waltz and Hegseth, along with CIA Director John Ratcliffe and additional officials, discussed an imminent military strike against the Houthi militia in Yemen in a Signal chat. The information shared among the participants included intelligence information and precise attack plans. According to the Atlantic, Waltz added the editor-in-chief of the magazine, Jeffrey Goldberg, to the chat group. Precisely why he did so remains unclear. The White House confirmed the scandal after the fact. Trump insisted that it did not include classified content, a question that is of particular relevance since members of the U.S. government are not permitted to share such information over Signal. The U.S. special envoy for Ukraine and the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, was even in Russia while participating in the chat group.Pete Hegseth's WhatsApp profile photoFoto: Screenshot/ DER SPIEGELDER SPIEGEL was able to find some of the contact information for Gabbard, Hegseth and Waltz in commercial databases, while other information was in so-called password leaks, which are hardly a rarity on the internet. One example is the 2019 discovery by Troy Hunt, who found 773 million email addresses and more than 21 million passwords in a hacker forum.Since then, there have been numerous additional leaks. Criminals are constantly compiling new collections from hacks, usually to sell them on forums. It was particularly easy for DER SPIEGEL reporters to discover Hegseths mobile number and email address. They turned to a commercial provider of contact information that is primarily used by companies for sales, marketing and recruitment.DER SPIEGEL sent the provider a link to Hegseths LinkedIn profile and received a Gmail address and a mobile phone number in return, in addition to other information. A search of leaked user data revealed that the email address and, in some cases, even the password associated with it, could be found in over 20 publicly accessible leaks. Using publicly available information, it was possible to verify that the email address was used just a few days ago.The mobile number provided, meanwhile, led to a WhatsApp account that Hegseth apparently only recently deleted. The profile photo showed a shirtless Hegseth in a baseball cap and necklace. Comparisons with other photos of the U.S. secretary of defense using facial recognition software were able to confirm that the photo on the WhatsApp profile was indeed Hegseth.Several Passwords in Leaked DatabaseU.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz: Mobile number and email address found using a commercial people finder.Foto: Mandel Ngan/ AFPWaltzs mobile number and email address could be found using the same service provider. The mobile phone number could even be found using a people search engine popular in the U.S. DER SPIEGEL reporters were also able to find several passwords for Waltzs email address in leaked databases. The information also led to Waltzs profiles for Microsoft Teams, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Signal.National Intelligence Director Gabbard was seemingly more careful with her data than her two male colleagues. She apparently had her own data blocked in the commercial contact search engines that contained the data of Hegseth and Waltz. But her email address was to be found on WikiLeaks and Reddit.Gabbards email address is available in more than 10 leaks. One of those also contains a partial telephone number, which, when completed, leads to an active WhatsApp account and a Signal profile."Exposed data from top politicians can be used by hackers to launch convincing phishing attacks and gain access to devices and various services such as email, chat tools and PayPal, says Donald Ortmann, a specialist in information security, information procurement and social engineering. He supports companies and authorities following cyberattacks."In addition, deepfake attacks using images and sound available online can be launched to participate in virtual meetings, says Ortmann. Compromised accounts also enable hackers to "install malware, monitor communications and attempt political blackmail. Two Check MarksTo protect the private contact information of the U.S. politicians, DER SPIEGEL is not publishing the telephone numbers, email addresses and passwords it found. Furthermore, no tests were performed to determine if the passwords for the email addresses are still active. DER SPIEGEL informed Gabbard, Hegseth and Waltz of its findings. The U.S. Defense Department did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for the National Security Council indicated that the passwords and accounts of Michael Waltz, the national security adviser, had been changed before he joined Congress in 2019.Personal inquiries sent by DER SPIEGEL to the leaked WhatsApp and Signal accounts belonging to Waltz were delivered, according to the confirmation function. His WhatsApp profile photo showed Waltz with two other people in front of a U.S. flag. Shortly after the inquiries were sent, Waltzs accounts were apparently deactivated; the WhatsApp chat with DER SPIEGEL disappeared. The office of the national intelligence director stated that Tulsi Gabbards private data was leaked almost 10 years ago, that she hadnt used the relevant platforms for several years and that she had changed her passwords several times.DER SPIEGEL reporting, however, found that the private Google account belonging to Gabbard was used as recently as around two weeks ago. Messages sent by DER SPIEGEL to her leaked WhatsApp and Signal accounts were also apparently delivered. Two check marks appeared after they were sent. This story has been updated to include statements received from the offices of the officials involved after initial publication.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has popped up at today's Nintendo Direct showcase, with a fresh trailer but no proper release date. The game is still set to arrive at some point in 2025, though. In today's fresh look at the game, we got some gameplay Samus walking around the jungle planet Viewros, scanning stone figures and relics, before blasting away a surprise alien attack. We were then introduced to her psychic abilities, which let her open doors and control her beam with her mind - those abilities sound like they'll be pretty central to the plot, but aside from that, Ninty's keeping its cards close to its chest. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It's not that long since were were pretty starved for Metroid Prime 4 updates, but then it showed up as the final game of last June's Direct with a cool gameplay trailer and that release window of 2025 - that's the year we're now in. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It was also confirmed back then to be releasing on the original Nintendo Switch, so you wouldn't have to worry about picking up a new console just to play it, with the Switch 2 backwards compatibility we've learned about since then having fully evaporated those fears into nothingness. So, there you go, a look at Metroid prime 4, which drops some time this year. Tell your Nintendo-loving mates, even though they definitely already know. Screw it, tell your dad - he probably played the first few entries in the series back in the day, when games were good and you could smoke in pubs and I'm just saying all of this to prepare you for what he might reply with. Also, make sure to tune in to next week's Switch 2 Direct on April 2. You know you want to.
