March 27, 20255 min readWhen Was the First Exoplanet Discovered?Evidence of alien worlds goes back farther than you thinkBy Phil Plait edited by Lee BillingsThis artists concept shows an exoplanet and debris disk orbiting a polluted white dwarf. NASA/JPL-CaltechFor centuries, humans have wondered if planets exist around other stars and dreamed of what these alien worlds might be like.Eventually technology began catching up with our imagination. Despite many false starts and dead ends over all that time, astronomers announced the first discovery of exoplanets in 1992. These planets were not like Earth, nor were they orbiting a star like the sun, but they were confirmed to exist. It was the first evidence ever found of worlds beyond those of our solar system. But there is an argument that the first evidence was actually obtained years before, in 1988, when astronomers announced the detection of a planet around the nearby star Gamma Cephei A, 45 light-years from Earth. That claim was later retracted because of uncertainty in the data. In 2003, however, further observations showed that the planet did indeed exist. Surely this was the first evidence of alien worldsor so many textbooks and articles would have you believe. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. In a paper published in the proceedings of an astronomical conference, American astronomer Ben Zuckerman showed that the first evidence was arguably found much earlier than that.In 1917 Dutch-American astronomer Adriaan van Maanen was looking for stars that happened to be near the sun in space. To do this, he searched for stars that had high proper motion, meaning they moved more rapidly across the sky than the stars around them. The idea is that stars closer to Earth will appear to move faster than ones farther away, just as trees alongside a road appear to zip past you faster then distant hills when youre in a car.He found one, and it turned out to be weird. Observations at the time indicated it was decently close to us, about 13 light-years away. (Modern measurements put it at 14.1.) But that didnt make sense: these observations also indicated it was a hot star, hotter than the sun, and those kinds of stars are very luminous. Yet this one, later named van Maanen 2, was much too dim. Based on temperature alone, it shouldve been among the brightest stars visible in the sky, but instead it was so faint that it couldnt be seen without a telescope!Over the next couple of decades, this mystery was solved. Van Maanen 2 is an example of a white dwarf, the remnant of a relatively low-mass star like the sun after it exhausts all the nuclear fuel in its core, then expands into a swollen red giant and blows away its outer layers. Whats left is the hot stellar core exposed to space. From a distance it looks like an ordinary star, and its temperature mimics that of one with much higher mass. Such a white dwarf is small but extraordinarily dense, squeezing about as much mass as our sun into an orb only about the size of Earth! A cubic centimeter of white dwarf material roughly the size of a six-sided die can weigh as much as a metric tonthats about 100,000 times as dense as lead.Van Maanen 2 is the closest solitary white dwarf to the sun, so its studied quite intensely. (Two others are closer but orbit other stars.) White dwarfs are so faint that they become difficult to study at greater distances, and having one so nearby is a boon to astrophysics. But such studies revealed another mystery about this star. Astronomers can examine many characteristics of a cosmic object by creating a spectrumbreaking its incoming light into many individual wavelengths (or colors). Different elements and molecules absorb light at very specific wavelengths, so its possible to measure the presence of such material in stars by looking for areas of the spectrum where there is less light. (These features are called absorption lines.) At the time Van Maanen 2 was found, such spectra were recorded in a similar fashion as images; the light from the telescope was projected onto a glass plate and sprayed with photographically sensitive chemicals. When astronomers examined the spectrum of Van Maanen 2 on one of these plates, they were astonished to see spectral features usually associated with much more massive starsnamely, a strong calcium absorption line in the stars atmosphere. To a modern astronomers eye, thats very odd indeed.Calcium simply shouldnt be present in a white dwarfs atmosphere; the stellar corpse has monstrously strong surface gravity. Standing on the surface, a typical human would weigh about 7,000 metric tonsmore than 20 times the weight of the Statue of Liberty! Despite that intense gravity, a white dwarf can have an atmosphere almost entirely composed of extremely hot hydrogen and helium above its surface. Any heavier, less buoyant elements, such as iron or calcium, should fall to the surface rapidly on astronomical timescales, scrubbing the atmosphere clean. Indeed, most white dwarfs are seen to have extremely pure atmospheres of just those two lighter elements. But not allsome are polluted with heavier elements, with van Maanen 2 being the first example known to science. The next piece of this exoplanetary puzzle fell into place in the early 2000s, when astronomers found an infrared excess for some white dwarfs; that is, these white dwarfs give off more infrared light than expected. Such things have been seen in normal stars and indicate the presence of a starlight-warmed debris disk emitting an infrared glow. For white dwarfs, this result was unexpected but was quickly attributed to the remains of asteroids torn apart by the dead stars fierce gravity. The asteroids themselves were likely part of the planet-forming process that occurred billions of years earlier, when the white dwarf was still a young, vigorous star like the sun. After the star died, asteroids could have been gravitationally deflected by any lingering gas giant planets into close-in orbits and torn apart. Over time, that heavy elementenriched debris rained down on the white dwarf, polluting the atmosphere. Many of these white dwarfs are old but still show this signature of debris in their spectra. This means the rain of asteroidal debris is an ongoing process! Otherwise that heavier material would long ago have been cleaned from the atmosphere. And this is why the calcium-spiked spectrum of van Maanen 2 was so bizarre: besides mimicking a hotter star, it was also contaminated with debris from an ancient planetary system. While World War I raged on Earth, a very different war of the worlds was occurring 14 light-years away. A tiny spark of light collected by a telescope and recorded on a small glass plate showed that planets existed around other stars. So in some sense, alien worlds were not first discovered in the 1990s or even the 1980s. It took nearly a century to fully understand it, but the first evidence for exoplanets was found in 1917.

Its early access has debuted with a very impressive player count, and the developer has shared their intentions for the near future through a roadmap promising hefty updates. Naturally, a lot of people are wondering when InZOI is coming to PS5 and Xbox, and here we have an explanation of the possible release window for consoles. Is InZOI coming to PS5 and Xbox?Yes, InZOI is coming to PS5 and Xbox. As confirmed on the games official Discord, it is only available on PC Steam right now, but it is later expected to be released on consoles like PS5 and Xbox.Image credit: InZoi DiscordThis is fantastic news for players. A lot of hype started surrounding the game when its magnificent character creator demo came out in 2024, and the fact it will become more broadly available in the future is great to hear.Right now, the games director is very honest about the fact the game needs quite a bit of polishing and is nowhere near the standards of The Sims 4 yet. However, despite this, there are many similarities and differences between InZOI and The Sims, and the game is a lot of fun even in early access. With The Sims 5 nowhere near in sight, InZOI is definitely worth checking out, especially if you want an life simulator experience with heftier character customization plus ultra-realistic visuals. When will it come to consoles?InZOI is expected to come to PS5 and Xbox once early access for PC has ended. This means the possible release window for consoles is 2026.Per the games overview on Steam, Early Access is planned to last for at least a year. While a year would mean early access ending around late-March 2026, the developer says the roadmap may change depending on feedback and the games direction.Hopefully it does come to consoles as early as possible as the game looks amazing. Again, the visuals are super impressive, the customization is hella extensive, and its only going to get better as the developer delivers more updates. In other PlayStation news, Sony has confirmed a massive day-one PS Plus release for Summer.Related TopicsinZoi Subscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share

  • Killer InZoi bug accidentally lets players run over children, sending them flying across the playground

You can trust VideoGamer. Our team of gaming experts spend hours testing and reviewing the latest games, to ensure you're reading the most comprehensive guide possible. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereKRAFTONs Sims competitor InZoi has launched in early access with a massive player count, but players have been shocked by the game after finding an unintentional feature that allows them to kill children. In most video games, the murder of children is pretty much a no-go, at least outside of mods. (Every Bethesda game has a mod for this.) However, it turns out that InZoi allows players to kill children, but only if they run them over in a high-speed vehicle.InZoi lets players drive over childrenIn InZoi, players can get in a car and drive across the game world in an awesome mechanic that separates the game from The Sims. When driving, players can accidentally, or purposefully, hit other civilians which causes them to ragdoll and die.In a Reddit thread, players enjoying the early access game found that they can run into a child and ping them across the map. Just like any other character, this results in the child dying, which seems unintentional.Part of early access is trying to break the game, the player said. This is how you report bugs, issues, etc. One of the issues I found is that you can drive into the elementary school and run over.. Unalive the children.. They might want to change this as the game is launching with a T rating. It does appear that being able to hit children with a car is a bug, or an unintended feature. With the game hoping to keep the same T for Teen badge as The Sims, this feature would need to be removed to keep that age rating.Nevertheless, some players (not naming names) can definitely see the humour in this. Even if the game is patched out, someone will definitely (hopefully) mod the feature back in as players express a desire to hit one through the goal post in the playground. For more coverage of InZoi, read about the differences between this game and The Sims. • Axel Einar Hjorths 1930s Ut Chair Has Become a Cult Collectible
    www.architecturaldigest.com
When Swedish Social Democrats began drafting plans for a welfare state at the end of the 1920s, it included an idea that still feels quite radical: Every Swede would have five weeks of vacation a year, and they could even apply for a government-supplied allotment, a.k.a., a vacation cottage. For the department store Nordiska Kompaniet, where Axel Einar Hjorth served as chief architect, this signaled opportunity. People would be needing new furniture.Rose Uniackes London home.Photo: Franois Halard.Swedes were encouraged to live a healthy, athletic lifestyle, and, as a result, Sportstugembler, or sports furniturepieces designed specifically for small vacation houses, cottages, or cabinswas born, explains Kim Hostler, of the New York gallery Hostler Burrows, which specializes in Scandinavian design. Shes referring to the 1929 collection of rustic pine chairs, tables, and more that soon shipped out to fill residences on the Stockholm Archipelago. In the early 1930s, the Ut dining chair, named after one of its most popular islands, joined the series.Axel Einar Hjorths Ut Dining chairs in AD100 designer Giancarlo Valles Connecticut home.Photo: Stephen Kent JohnsonEver since, the seats, likely only produced until 1938, when Hjorth left his post at Nordiska Kompaniet, have been a bit of an enigma. Little is known about Hjorth, who died in 1959, and what information does exist has been stewarded by a handful of galleries, like Jackson Design, in Stockholm, who have worked to keep his legacy alive. Still, despite all odds, these usually hand-hewn country house staples have risen to cult status among todays tastemakers who love them for what AD100 talent Giancarlo Valle calls their simple nonchalance. A pair pulls up to a farm table in his own Connecticut breakfast nook. Other designer fans include Rose Uniacke, Olivier Garc, and Pierre Yovanovitch, who lives with a set at his chateau in Provence. They blend strength and simplicity so well, the AD100 maestro says. I often use it to strike a balance between opulence and sobriety. This story appears in ADs April issue. • 2XKO will have "a smaller number than you would expect" when it comes to champions at launch, but there's a good reason why

Double Digits2XKO will have "a smaller number than you would expect" when it comes to champions at launch, but there's a good reason whyAs part of a dev Q&A in the official Discord, game director Shaun Rivera has dropped the long-speculated launch roster figure.Image credit: Riot Games News by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on March 28, 2025 After years of speculation and fanatical guess work from the community, we finally know how many champions will be in 2XKO at launch. Ten playable characters will be present when the game finally comes out some time this year.In a dev Q&A hosted in the official 2XKO discord following yesterday's dev diary, several staff from the 2XKO team responded to community questions left unanswered. In response to a query regarding the launch roster, game director Shaun Rivera spilled the beans on the final figure. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "We will have 10 playable champions at launch. We know it is a smaller number than you would expect, but when faced with a trade-off of including even more champions resulting in delaying the release date vs getting it into your hands sooner, we are excited about the latter."We also believe that experiencing these champions through solo/duo play via a number of different fuses provide a lot for folks to dig into early on. The fact that we are a live service game means that it will only get better from there via new champion releases and gameplay updates."It is certainly a small number, especially when compared to the game's peers in the genre. However, as Shaun states, it's entirely possible that the Fuse system will help keep the game fresh despite this lesser scope, given that each drastically alters the way the game is played. Plus, we've little information at all on the post-launch release schedule. If 2XKO can match the pace that other developers like Capcom, Bandai Namco, etc have when it comes to releasing new champions, maybe this is a flaw that'll fade away in good time. For those not keeping track, now that we know 10 champions are coming on launch, that means we've got three reveals left before the game is released proper. Now, one can be expected at Evo this August. That's a safe bet, given Riot has revealed Yasuo and Braum around this event over the past two years. As for the other two reveals and when they'll come, it's harder to predict. And who will they be? We know Katarina exists in this weird amalgamated form right now, used as a testing dummy for mechanics and special moves that have warped her far from what you'd expect from her. But, given that info was released by the team at Evo last year, maybe she's been fixed up to a degree where she's ready for the launch roster. The others are total question marks, but I'm hoping for at least one weirdo. We've seen a lot of "poster" champions hit the 2XKO roster and I'd like at least one Fiddlesticks, Reksai, Skarner, etc. What do you think of this roster number? Is it enough, or are you left wanting more? Let us know below!

  • I'm not saying Hollow Knight: Silksong fans aren't fine after that Nintendo Direct, but one has slammed out a 779 word all-caps text wall that's just the Switch 2 Direct date

April 2I'm not saying Hollow Knight: Silksong fans aren't fine after that Nintendo Direct, but one has slammed out a 779 word all-caps text wall that's just the Switch 2 Direct dateAPRIL 2, APRIL 2, APRIL 2, APRIL 2, APRIL 2, APRIL 2, APRIL 2, (inhale), APRIL 2, APRIL 2, APRIL 2...Image credit: Team Cherry News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 28, 2025 Sorry, Hollow Knight: Silksong fans. My heart goes out to you. Your game didn't show up at yesterday's Nintendo Direct, so now I guess you'll just have to shift your hopes to next week's Switch 2 Direct. Actually, let's just see how you're copin-.....oh.One of you has written out the Switch 2 Direct's date in all caps more times than I can count. Ok, then. I'm sure they just used a lot of copy and paste, there's not way they've written all 779 words of this out, and oh wait there are some instances when they've accidentally stopped short in a way that makes it seem like they might have done just that.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Alright, I'll cut the bollocks. What I'm talking about is a post on the Silksong subreddit by a user with the handle Spiritual-Hippo7393, whose bio reads: "Life is a soup, and I am a fork." Immediately after yesterday's Nintendo Direct concluded without a Silksong appearance, they authored a post. Its title? "APRIL 2ND APRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2ND APRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2ND APRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL APRIL 2ND APRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAPRIL 2NDAP". Snappy. To the point. Mysterious, if you don't know that's that date of next week's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. The body? it's that same thing repeated so many times I tried counting and had to stop because it was going to take me all morning. However, I can confirm that without the cheeky "new Tomodachi Life though" that Spiritual-Hippo7393 added at the very end, the parts of the post that solely consist of "APRIL 2ND" or incomplete versions of it like "AP" or just "APRIL" add up to 850 words in total. To put that in context, the 'About this game' section of Silksong's steam page currently adds up to 267 words, meaning that this post is nearly three times its length. If you're truly unhinged and try to copy every single word on that Steam page as it's displayed on browser - including all of the usual Steam store accoutrements like the search bar, system requirements and links at the bottom - you'll get something like 742 words, which is still less than 779. Damn, Spiritual-Hippo7393.Safe to say the Skong (it's a nonsense meme word they've taken to saying) nation is now looking forward to and pinning their hopes on that April 2 Switch 2 Direct, then. It may be foolish, but they've heard about stuff like those recent Silksong Steam updates and the thing Jeff Grubb said the other day which now looks like it probably wasn't about Silksong unless Ninty's plans changed. There's no going back. APRIL 2ND.APRIL 2ND? Do you think Silksong will show up at that Switch 2 Direct? Or are the Silksongers doomed to more dissappointment? Let us know below!

  • Has Metroid Prime 4 Taken Inspiration From Dread For Its New Suit?
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: NintendoAt the end of the latest trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, we were bestowed with a brief but tantalising glimpse at a brand-new suit for long-time protagonist Samus Aran.At first glance, the suit looks completely new; something we've not yet seen from the Metroid Series. Or is it..? Well, officially yes, it is, but taking a quick look through some of the concept art for Metroid Dread, we've spotted a few similarities with one of the scrapped suit designs from MercurySteam's 2021 entry.Observe in the below image: you can see distinct similarities with the helmet, the rounded shape of the shoulder pads (albeit not the size), and the three lights in the centre of Samus' chest. The helmet design specifically is a particularly interesting one, as the additional 'eye' above the main visor seems to be the source of Samus' new psychic abilities in Beyond. In other words, it's not just some random cosmetic choice that Retro Studios decided to throw in for fun.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWatch on YouTube If we disregard the fact that the Dread concept art wasn't used in the final game, could it be that the similarities point to some loose connection between Dread and Beyond? Could the latter actually be taking place much later in the timeline than we had previously thought?Chances are it's merely a coincidence. In fact, we're almost certain it's a coincidence, but it definitely raises a few questions and makes us even more excited to find out what happens when Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launches later this year.Image: Nintendo LifeMetroid Prime 4: Beyond was showcased in the latest Direct presentation, which also detailed the new Virtual Game Card scheme for Switch and Switch 2. We'll be finding out much more about the Switch 2 next week during the big Direct showcase on 2nd April. Ahhhh we want itMaybe we'll get one next week..?What do you think, dear readers? Image: Nintendo LifeUpdate [Fri 28th Mar 2025, 11:10am]: Well folks, we're blushing quite profusely now. As pointed out, the My Nintendo app is indeed real, albeit only available in Japan at the time of writing. We sincerely apologise if we caused any confusion here! The app's icon being present in the screenshots from Nintendo Today does still raise a few questions, however. Is it possible Nintendo might bring it over to the West, or is it, as covered below, merely a placeholder to facilitate a fancy screenshot?Anyway, it's business as usual for the time being - we're juggling quite a few balls at the moment, so again, we apologise for the slip up!Original Story: Nintendo dropped a load of new surprises as part of its latest Direct presentation, including a brand-new mobile app called 'Nintendo Today!'.In it, the app describes how to set up one of its two widgets on your phone homescreen, and it's here that we can see something quite interesting. In the accompanying screenshots, an app icon for 'My Nintendo' can be seen in the bottom left corner of the screen. Now, it's possible that this could just be something that Nintendo cooked up for the sole purpose of creating a realistic looking phone screen, utilising a 'fake' icon to go alongside the real icons for Nintendo Today, Nintendo Switch Online, and Nintendo Music. If it's not fake, though, then we could be looking at yet another app from Nintendo in the near future; one that allows you to access My Nintendo directly through your phone.Image: NintendoHopefully Nintendo will be able to shed some light on this particular mystery soon; perhaps during its upcoming Switch 2 Direct..?
