  • Lenovos upcoming SteamOS handheld will cost $50 more than expected
    www.theverge.com
The SteamOS-powered version of Lenovos Legion Go S handheld gaming PC debuted at CES 2025 with a somewhat attractive $499.99 price tag. At that price, The Verges Sean Hollister considered it a true Steam Deck rival, wedged neatly between the cost of Valves $399 LCD and $549 OLED models. The handheld recently went up for preorder at Best Buy with a higher $549.99 price (and a May 25th release date), and Lenovo communications director Jeff Witt confirmed to The Verge that this is the new cost for the base model.Whats done is done, I suppose, but the $499.99 price seemed right for the Legion Go S. Despite its perks over both the Steam Deck LCD and OLED models (Hall effect joysticks, a larger 8-inch screen with variable refresh rate, a cozy design, adjustable triggers), its Ryzen Z2 Go chip didnt blow us away. In fact, the Windows-based Go S models that Sean and I tested were outperformed by the Steam Deck. Simply swapping the OS will cure some headaches (mainly, that Windows on handhelds is an atrocious experience), but its unclear whether it will somehow let the Z2 Go do more.A $50 price jump probably wont spell failure for this device, but it makes the arri …Read the full story at The Verge.

  • Side Quests creators wanted to tell stories about why people love games
    www.theverge.com
Halfway through its first season, Apples Mythic Quest threw a wild curveball with A Dark Quiet Death an unexpectedly dramatic episode that chronicled the rise and fall of another video game development team. A Dark Quiet Death was the first instance of Mythic Quest switching up its comedic formula to tell an earnest story about what makes people fall in love with games. And since then, every season of Mythic Quest has featured a backstory episode that felt emblematic of the series narrative strengths.Side Quest, Apple TV Plus new Mythic Quest spinoff miniseries, feels a lot like a collection of A Dark Quiet Death-style episodes as it introduces a slew of new characters (and brings back a couple of veterans) whose lives have all been touched by one of the worlds most popular games. When I recently spoke with Side Quests co-creators, Ashly Burch, John Howell Harris, and Katie McElhenney, they told me that the new shows stylistic similarities to Mythic Quests forays into the past were entirely intentional. But after years of focusing on characters who see themselves as larger-than-life gods, the Side Quest team was much more interested in telling stories about the players who made Mythic Quest a hit. When we first started writing Mythic Quest, we talked about how these characters are sort of like gods who are creating this virtual world, Burch said. So if the people within Mythic Quest HQ are the gods, then Side Quest is about the mortals that are being affected by the choices of the gods.Side Quest wanders further and further away from Ian Grimm (Rob McElhenney) and everyone else working at Mythic Quest Studios over the course of its four-episode-long season. But the series actually kicks off with an episode revolving around the games art director, Phil Birch (Derek Waters), as he tries to make some time for a vacation with his girlfriend Maude (Anna Konkle). Even though working directly on Mythic Quest (the game) might make its fans see Phil as one of the games gods, Burch felt that his history of being exploited by his colleagues made him the perfect mortal to open the show.We wanted to lead with a transitional landing pad between Mythic Quest prime and Side Quest, and we thought that Phil, bless him, is a very good encapsulation of the choices Mythic Quests main characters have been making, Burch explained. From seasons 23, Phil is probably treated like the office toilet more than any other character, and hes just at the whims of these deranged creatives. All of Side Quests characters have some sort of relationship with Mythic Quest, but the co-creators saw the show as an opportunity to explore different kinds of audiences that can gravitate toward popular pieces of IP as they expand into different mediums. At this point in the games existence, Mythic Quest has been adapted into a hit comic series that stores like the one featured in Pull List can barely manage to keep in stock. And while Mythic Quest employees like Phil might be desperate to get away from the franchise, Harris noted that there are countless people who are desperate to become part of it, like the professional musicians featured in Side Quests Tr-like episode, Fugue. At one point, it was news to me that the music from games like Zelda and Final Fantasy goes on tour all around the world to be played by full orchestras in concert halls and theaters packed full of people, Harris said. I was fascinated by how popular these concerts are, but also the level of musicianship required to play at that level in such a competitive environment.Image: AppleThe season comes full circle in The Last Raid, an episode set almost entirely within Mythic Quest (the game), as a group of teens log on together hoping to take on some powerful bosses only to realize that their real-world friendships are running low on HP. Burch said The Last Raid was born, in part, out of the teams love for classic machinima series like Red vs. Blue. But the idea of taking viewers inside of Mythic Quest also struck them as the perfect way to illustrate how both the game and the larger brand have transformed in response to whats been going on behind the scenes.Part of whats interesting about The Last Raid is the way you kind of see that Mythic Quest, the game, is changing because the brand is also expanding, McElhenney said. It almost feels like this group of kids is playing a throwback version of Mythic Quest. World of Warcraft is a good analogue because its a similar situation where you have a game that has a rabid fan base of people who are loyal to it even though its not necessarily being updated and maintained.Though Side Quest drops a couple of hints about how Mythic Quest might change after its season 4 finale, the teams biggest goal with the spinoff was to leave viewers guessing about which kinds of new perspectives theyd be seeing this world from next. And that meant leaning into the tonal flexibility the original series has become known for by veering off the beaten path.I feel like thats how it was with Mythic Quests departure episodes especially in season 1 when no one was expecting them, McElhenney said. Shows just dont do that kind of thing usually, but because Mythic Quest prime was able to take that leap, we had more creative freedom with Side Quest to embrace the anthology model and make every episode feel completely different. All four episodes of Side Quest are now streaming on Apple TV Plus.See More:

This is one of the best prices you can get right now for an RTX 5080 equipped prebuilt, especially since most other brands seem to be jacking up prices steadily since the RTX 50 series launch in January. The only other prebuilt you can get at Dell with an RTX 5080 GPU costs over $4,000. Good luck trying to find a standalone GPU to build out your own DIY PC; you'll probably spend as much for the GPU as you would this entire system.Alienware Aurora R16 RTX 5080 Gaming PC for $2,400Alienware Aurora R16 Intel Core Ultra 7 265F RTX 5080 Gaming PC$2,399.99 at AlienwareThis Alienware Aurora R16 gaming PC is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265F CPU, GeForce RTX 5080 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. In our Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 FE review, Jackie writes that "If you already have a high-end graphics card from the last couple of years, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 doesnt make a lot of sense it just doesnt have much of a performance lead over the RTX 4080, though the extra frames from DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation do make things look better in games that support it. However, for gamers with an older graphics card who want a significant performance boost, the RTX 5080 absolutely provides doubly so if youre comfortable with Nvidias AI goodies."New Release: Alienware Area-51 RTX 5080 PCNew for 2025Alienware Area-51 Intel Core Ultra 9 285K RTX 5080 Gaming PC (64GB/4TB)Alienware has also released its new-for-2025 Area-51 system and you can order it right now at Dell. The chassis looks similar to the 2024 R16 system with some minor aesthetic and cooling redesigns and updated components. The I/O panel is positioned at the top of the case instead of the front, and the tempered glass window now spans the entire side panel instead of just a smaller cutout. As a result, the side panel vents are gone, and instead air intakes are located at the bottom as well as the front of the case. Alienware is now pushing a positive airflow design (more intake than exhaust airflow), which usually means a less dusty interior. The internal components have also all been refreshed, with a new motherboard, faster RAM, and more powerful power supply to accommodate the new generation of CPUs and the RTX 50 series GPUs.RTX 5080 and 5090 GPUs Are Sold Out EverywhereThe first wave of Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards went up for preorder and sold out within the first hour. • Inside the Transformation of an Ethereal Los Angeles Video Studio
    www.housebeautiful.com
It makes sense that Adam Hunter was called upon to design the new Hearst video studio in West Hollywood, California. The interior designer and former Broadway stars approach to design is rooted in the idea that creativity needs to live out in the open. You wont see any cubicles in his commercial work. Instead, he balances refinement with drama. Theres a distinctly Californian spirit in my workelevated yet relaxed, like a warm breeze through palm trees, says Hunter, who is also a member of the House Beautiful Next Wave Class of 2014. For the Hearst studio, we brought that feeling to life with soft, muted tonessunset hues, warm neutrals, and airy bluesand even incorporated faux palm trees to ground the space with a sense of place. The result is a layered space that is equally dynamic and inspiring, a place where creativity lives in every corner but nothing feels overly styled, as he puts it. Hunters acumen for this type of work comes from years of working on residential design as well as creative workspace projects for Kate Somerville, FanDuel, and his own office on Melrose. What I love about commercial design is that it gives me the opportunity to shape the energy of a businesshow people feel when they walk in, how teams function within the space. We asked Hunter how he came to visualize the dreamy office space and make it a reality. Related Story Hearst MagazinesThe entry to the Hearst West Coast video studio in Los Angeles.House Beautiful: What were your first thoughts when you entered our empty studio? Adam Hunter: The space had great bonesoriginal hardwood floors and an industrial edge that gave it characterbut it initially felt stark and expansive, more like a warehouse than a workspace. I saw an opportunity to embrace that rawness while layering in warmth and personality. By creating defined zones and introducing texture, softness, and contrast, we transformed it into a space that feels inviting, grounded, and full of intention. The energy at Hearst is calm, creative, and elevateda space thats serene and stylish, which was really the goal. Because its a publisher, we knew the visual language needed to be strong, but not loud. Theres a quiet confidence to the space, where texture and light do most of the talking. HB: The first thing you see when you walk in is this ethereal cloud wallpaper. Tell us about that choice and how it sets the tone for the space. AH: First impressions are everything. They set the emotional tone. I wanted that first moment to feel groundinglike stepping into a creative sanctuary. The entry is open, quiet, and flooded with natural light. We designed it to feel like a breathopen and uncluttered but layered with thoughtful details that reveal themselves the longer youre in it. In this studio, we used materials that are textural but understatedlike a boucl sofa that invites you to sink in, pale-colored finishes that reflect natural light, and cloud wallpaper that adds depth without weight. Theres a softness that I find grounding. In a workspace, you dont want anything too visually noisy. The textures, the tonesthey all needed to speak quietly but with intention. HB: You mentioned in the studio tour that lighting is important in a space like this. Can you tell me more about that? What is the key lighting element here? Lighting is everything. Its the unsung hero of any good design. Here, we used a mix of architectural lighting for function and sculptural fixtures for atmosphere. The pendant in the main sitting areait anchors the room and casts this soft, ambient glow that warms the whole space.Hearst MagazinesThe video studios glam room.HB: How did you make such a large space feel more intimate? I carved the space into momentseach one with a distinct purpose and mood. By floating furniture, using rugs to anchor zones, and adjusting lighting levels, we created intimate pockets within the larger volume. The chill nook adds an essential softnessit signals that this is a place where ideas are meant to flow, not just perform. HB: The airy shelving does so much more than divide the space. Why are furnishings like these so important to include? Shelving is a backdrop and a personality piece. Its functional, surebut also a place to tell a story. We used it to display art, books, objects that speak to Hearsts heritage and modern creative pulse. Hearst MagazinesHearst MagazinesHB: You had the entire Hearst photography archives to pull art from. How did you choose these pieces? Art should feel inevitable, like it was always meant to be there. I tend to avoid obvious or overly literal pieces. Instead, I look for art that has soula sense of quiet tension or a visual rhythm that plays well with the rest of the space.HB: Lets talk about the finishes and textures of your decor choices. They create such a nice sense of equilibrium. AH: The decor was all about contrast and balance. Nubby boucl, smooth oak, brushed metals, vintage ceramicseach texture adds a layer without demanding attention. The space feels tactile but not fussy. You can feel that balance the moment you walk in.HB: How did you build the color palette? Every element was chosen to speak quietly but with intention. The palette of soft blues, sand tones, and warm whites creates cohesion without feeling flat. Start with one anchormaybe its the rug, maybe its the artworkand build from there. Keep your palette tight, but not flat. Layer tones of the same hue, vary your textures, and mix shapes. A round coffee table with a rectangular rug, a rough linen with a polished marbleits the contrast that makes it work.Hearst MagazinesHB: The nook with the pool table and couch looks so comfortable. Do you think everyone should have a couch in their office? Absolutely. Creative work is not linearit needs a place to pause and reset. That soft nook is an invitation to unplug, brainstorm, or just take a beat. A couch in a home office? Yes, if space allows. It changes the energy instantly.HB: Speaking of couches, how do you decide on the right shape, color, and material for a space? Its all about the context. The chill-out space needed something grounded and sculptural, hence the deeper color and low-slung shape of the Wayfair Professional sofa . The dove gray boucl sofa [in the glam room] is all about softness and silhouetteits an exhale in the middle of the space. You want your furniture to reflect how you want the room to feel. • Ted Lasso season 4 is coming: Heres everything we know so far
    9to5mac.com
Apple TV+ is currently airing one of its best reviewed comedies ever: Seth Rogens The Studio. But the TV+ comedy that will always live on in our hearts and mindsTed Lassois currently preparing a new season. Heres everything we know about Ted Lasso season 4.Season 4 is finally officialQuestions about Ted Lassos fourth season have abounded since all the way back when season 3 was airing.Especially over the past six months, though, theres been abundant evidence that the show would make a season 4 return. From teases by execs, series stars, and the co-creator Bill Lawrence, to cast contract renewals, production being officially scheduled, and more. Finally though, on March 14, 2025 Apple made it official.Matt Cherniss, the Apple TV+ head of programming said:Ted Lasso has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fanbase all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unwavering belief. Everyone at Apple is thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Jason and the brilliant creative minds behind this show.Cast members and creative team for new seasonPer early reports, the vast majority of the Ted Lasso cast is expected to return for season 4. Which is great news since the shows ensemble is a core strength.Several actors have already had their contract options picked up, while negotiations are ongoing with others. One possible missing player for the new season is Phil Dunster, also known as Jamie Tartt. Dunster reportedly has run into scheduling issues trying to join the new season, though guest appearances arent out of the question.Theres a particularly noteworthy addition to the creative team for Ted Lassos new season. As highlighted in Apples announcement press release, Jack Burditt (Nobody Wants This, Modern Family, 30 Rock) has signed on as executive producer. Hes apparently helping Sudeikis lead the writers room, which is exciting considering Burditts strong track record.Jason Sudeikis is back, but maybe with reduced roleThe man behind the mustache, Jason Sudeikis, might not have quite as big a presence in Ted Lassos new season.Matt Belloni on his podcast The Town said that, based on what hes heard, Sudeikis wont be present for the entirety of the new season. There will be many, many returning cast members. But Sudeikis will be minimized on the show.Whether this turns out to be true or not, I still expect well see plenty of Ted in season 4. Just perhaps not as much as before. This wouldnt altogether be surprising, since Lasso already stepped back a little in season 3 to give the strong ensemble more time to shine. Season 4 could follow the same approach.Season 4 will feature AFC Richmonds first womens teamAs first reported by Sigmund Judge, one major narrative thread of the new season will be the formation of AFC Richmonds womens team.Jason Sudeikis confirmed this on a recent podcast appearance:Were writing season four now; thats the official word. Teds coaching a womens team. Its very likely that the mens team will still be a huge part of the show, but Richmond will also seek to expand its offerings by adding a womens team for the first time. When to expect season 4 on Apple TV+Originally, production on Ted Lasso season 4 was expected to kick off early this year. That didnt end up happening, and now the latest reporting pegs a production start in the spring. That said, there are still a lot of unknowns that make it difficult to pin down a tentative Apple TV+ debut date. Its looking unlikely that new Lasso episodes will arrive in 2025. However, assuming they do slip out of this year, season 4 should at least arrive some time in 2026.Apple TV+ isavailable for $9.99 per monthand features hit TV shows and movies likeTed Lasso,Severance,The Morning Show,Silo, andShrinking.Best Ted Lasso and Apple TV buysAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • HomeKit Weekly: Smartwings expands HomeKit blinds with PoE-powered Matter-over-Ethernet
    9to5mac.com
Smart home automation is all about convenience or security. For me, automation with motorized shades is one upgrade that makes a real difference day-to-day. Instead of manually raising and lowering them at the beginning and end of the day, automation ensures the perfect amount of lightwithout thinking about it. Recently, SmartWings announced a new set of Matter-enabled shades that introduce Power over Ethernet (PoE) support, eliminating the need for charging. While PoE is an option, its not required, making these some of the most best smart home motorized shades on the market. HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apples smart home framework. How I use themIve tried multiple variations of SmartWings shades over the past few years, and to be frankly honest, of all the smart home products we have, theyre the ones my wife loves the most. The designs pass the designer test in terms of not looking like theyre smart shades, and the automation of them is great. We recently upgraded some shades in our bedroom to SmartWings after having them be manual for the last 2 years, and while it is a first-world problem, its such a nicer experience. Every morning, wed manually pull up the shades and wed have to lower them every night. It only took a few minutes, but it was just another thing to do. Now, we automate them within HomeKit during the week since we get up consistently at the same time. On the weekend, we raise and lower them using a remote control. PoE and Matter-over-Ethernet supportOne of the biggest downsides of battery-powered shades is the battery. Theyll need to be recharged at some point, which usually happens at the least convenient time. If you have a PoE networking environment, this eliminates that issue entirely, delivering both power and data over a single Ethernet cable. There are no wall adapters and no battery rechargingjust a wired connection that works day in and day out. You can also use a PoE injector if you dont have PoE switches. This product would give you the benefits of an always-charged motor. The placement of the ethernet switch makes it fairly easy to hide behind curtains as well. Like other SmartWings shades, these new models are fully Matter-compatible, meaning they work great with HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant. In a HomeKit environment, you can add them to scenes and automations, control them with Siri, and check their position from the Home app. With ethernet support, these shades can communicate directly over a hardwired connection. That means faster response times, more reliable automation, and no dependency on a strong Wi-Fi signal. Reducing reliance on Wi-Fi is a major benefit if you live in a crowded Wi-Fi environment (apartments, etc.). PoE allows these shades to stay connected to our network without competing for RF airtime, ensuring consistent performance, even in environments with congested RF.InstallationI am not the most handy guy, and installing the shades is doable for me. Youll use a tape measure to measure the slots on top of the shades so you know where to mark on the top of your windows. Youll then pre-drill holes and then screw in the brackets. I started with one hole for each bracket to make sure I measured right and went back and put the second one in once verified. Thankfully, the shades give a bit of wiggle room, so it doesnt have to be perfect.Once theyre installed and mounted, you can plug up the ethernet cable and scan the Matter code to add to HomeKit. There is one on top of it and one hanging on the motor. It then shows up in the Home as shades. You can lower and raise them based on the slider and add them to scenes. Because the shades can be lowered to various percentage points, you can set them to lower 50% at dusk and then 100% at bedtime. Wrap upAs I mentioned earlier, I love this brand of shades. Theyre also whisper quiet. I love that it supports HomeKit and includes a remote that can be used. One remote controls all the shades in my bedroom. If I could only have one smart home product in my house, it would be the Smartwings shades. You can buy the new PoE shades directly from Smartwings.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Rogue Scientist Who Gene-Hacked Human Babies Gear Up for More Human Experiments
    futurism.com
Image by Greg Baker / AFP via Getty / FuturismGeneticsThat rogue scientist who created HIV-resistant designer babies is apparently gearing up for more human gene-editing research. In an interview with theWall Street Journal, He Jiankui said he wants to conduct human trials on his next big project: encoding genetics to prevent Alzheimer's disease, a heritable illness, in future generations. He identified South Africa, where the government declared in 2024 that it's open to the "significant potential" of genetic editing, as a good place for those trials to take place. Before that, He wants to send two Chinese colleagues to the US to conduct trials on mice and monkeys. As the controversial researcher told the WSJ, he can't go himself because his home country, which imprisoned him in 2019 for scientific misconduct and fraud over his gene-hacking experiments on human fetuses that were subsequently born, won't renew his passport.Aside from the broad strokes of a comeback, which seem to be more logistical in nature than anything else, we don't know almost anything else about how He plans to start up again. The self-styled "Chinese Darwin" has declined to identify his financial backers and doesn't, as the WSJ notes, have any affiliations with any academic institution. When the newspaper tried to figure out who he may be working with in the US, it was unable to do so, and South Africa's health department didn't respond to requests for comment from WSJ reporters.Lofty promises and opaque funding are, of course, nothing new to science. But He is no normal scientist, and as the newspaper notes, his reputation as "China's Frankenstein" has followed the 41-year-old gene-hacking pioneer even after his release from prison last year. It's no wonder he doesn't want to reveal who's funding him: they could, conceivably, be ostracized for doing so.It also probably doesn't help that He regularly posts photos of himself in his mysterious lab which the Chinese government would not, the scientist insisted to the WSJ, allow foreign visitors to enter without permission alongside cryptic declarations, including his claim that ethics are "holding back" science. For all that creepiness, however, He clearly has heart. Peppered between self-aggrandizing posts are a number of shockingly egalitarian claims, including an insistence that "health is the universal human right" and that "'Survival of the fittest' is unfair for the people born with genetic disadvantages.""No one," He wrote in the latter post, "should be left behind."That ethos in particular seems to be related to the seemingly personal inspiration behind the scientist's latest avenue of research: his mother, who is in her late 60s, has Alzheimer's that has progressed far enough that she no longer recognizes her infamous son.If he can get human trials up and running, He wants to see if he can mimic a genetic mutation found in Icelanders who appear to have a protein that protects them against the debilitating cognitive disease. That's a far cry from the admittedly reckless experiments he conducted on embryos and it seems far less ethically dubious, too.And what of the children born of those experiments?
