Switching jobs did not lead to higher wage growth than staying at a job in February, per federal data. 10'000 Hours/Getty Images 2025-03-29T10:41:01Z SaveSaved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Switching jobs led to higher pay raises after the pandemic. But federal data shows that the trend is in decline, with job switchers seeing falling pay growth.A cooling of the Great Resignation and fewer job offers are weakening workers' bargaining power.Switching jobs was once a surefire way to get a big raise, but federal data suggest that's no longer the case.According to the Atlanta Fed's Wage Growth Tracker, the median pay increase for job switchers fell to 4.2% in February, a sharp decline from 7.3% in early 2023.Job stayers also saw wage growth slow, though to a lesser extent, declining from 5.8% to 4.4% over the same period. This marks a stark shift from the labor market immediately post-pandemic, when job switchers consistently outpaced job stayers in pay gains. At their peak in July 2022, job switchers earned as much as 2.6% more than those who stayed put.The end of the Great ResignationLabor market analysts attribute the wage downturn to the cooling of the Great Resignation the post-pandemic wave of record job quits and a labor shortage that drove up wages. In 2021 alone, about 47 million Americans left their jobs, often securing higher pay elsewhere."Job switchers enjoyed a significant wage premium from late 2021 through early 2023 because employers were facing significant labor shortages after the pandemic and needed to offer significant wage increases to lure workers away from their prior positions," Nancy Vanden Houten,Now, however, slowing inflation, fewer job offers, and reduced competition for workers have weakened employees' bargaining power."Labor markets are still fairly strong, but nowhere near as tight as in 2022," Harry Holzer, a nonresident senior fellow in economic studies at Brookings and a public policy professor at Georgetown University, told BI."The really large gains in 2022 were occurring during the Great Resignation when the labor market was extremely tight, and workers demanded higher pay," he said. But now, "quits have gone way down."This shift is making many workers reluctant to leave their current jobs."Certainly, in DC, there's this feeling that you're better off staying put in a way right now with all the layoffs," Elise Gould, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, told BI."There's some economic insecurity that would be leading to this kind of phenomenon where people might be just staying still more," she said. The wage squeeze in techTech professionals, in particular, are feeling the effect of a cooling job market.Jim Harrington, a principal software engineer at Cart.com who earns over $200,000 a year, told BI that during his 12-month job search, he has seen wages on job listings top out at $180,000."It's not a bad wage, but it is not the levels that we were accustomed to seeing over the last few years," he said.According to Levels.fyi data, wages for software engineers, product designers, and technical program managers fell 1-2% in the second half of 2024.Some professionals have even left the industry altogether.Ryan Essenburg, who said he worked for 21 years as a Business Development DirectorAfter what he termed an "existential" job search and lower salary offers, "I decided to put my search on indefinite hold," he said, adding: "I am coaching tennis now and very happy."Others have had to take significant pay cuts.Raymond Traylor, who was laid off as PairTree's Chief Technology Officer in December 2023, went from a $180,000 salary to $36,000 as a computer systems analyst at VSorts, a SaaS platform, from December 2023 to March 2023, and has been earning between $3,000 and $5,000 a month as Negotiate Fairly's CTO and cofounder since March 2024."It's been a multi-year downturn, but hopefully it's not too much longer, and I hope that we don't go back to just a boom-and-bust bubble sort of economy," he told BI, adding he hopes it's just an "in-between weird time."What's next for wage growth? While job stayers saw slightly higher pay raises than job switchers in February, their long-term prospects aren't much better.Workplace advisory firm Willis Towers Watson projects that US employees who stay in their roles will see an average 3.7% salary increase in 2025, down from 3.8% in 2024 and4.6%in 2023, though still above the pre-pandemic norm of 3%.Some economists warn this isn't just a temporary dip."The amount of uncertainty facing businesses today is leading to further reluctance to hire," Thomas A. Kochanco, co-director of the MIT Institute for Work and Employment Research, told BI."If anything, the labor market will get weaker in the months ahead.""I hope we are not in for a recession," he added. "But if that does occur, expect the bargaining power of both job hoppers and incumbents to continue to decline."Recommended video

The 7 launch games that convinced me to buy a console Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished March 29, 2025 9:00am Halo: Combat Evolved worth buying an Xbox for (Xbox Game Studios)A reader reveals the killer app games that were so good he bought the console to play them on, from the Mega Drive and SNES to the original Xbox and Wii.As we get closer to more news on the Nintendo Switch 2, I thought Id take a look back at some of the consoles Ive had and the launch titles that helped convince me to get that consoleMega Drive Revenge Of ShinobiMy Mega Drive came packed with Altered Beast and, frankly, the less said about that the better. Yeah, it was a competent port of the arcade game, but it was a lacklustre and repetitive title to begin with.I wouldnt go as far to say Revenge Of Shinobi was a killer app but it did shine a light on the potential of the machine. Strong and fluid gameplay, varied stages, and fantastic music combined to make a solid launch title. Plus, Spider-Man and Godzilla, whats not to like?!Super Nintendo Super Mario WorldNow this is a killer app. Id not played a Mario game before, much of my platforming experience was from Spectrum games such as Jet Set Willy and Pyjamarama. Its safe to say this was on another level. Several levels in fact.A huge 96 areas, some of which were secret, extremely tight but predictable controls and movement, banging tunes, pop out graphics, and superior gameplay. Plus, F-Zero was also a launch title. Double bubble!PlayStation WipEoutWhen youre launching a new console, particularly if you as a company are new to the market, you need to show off what your machine can do straight out of the gate. Yeah, you can do it with a snazzy T-Rex demo, free with the system, but youd need full games to really get peoples attention.WipEout was fast, bombastic, smooth, playable, but no pushover. The marketing for the game gets the headlines now but the game beneath was still excellent. It wanted to attract the more mature gamer (oxymoron? joking!) and its difficult to argue against that. And if you were a fast-paced racing fan, a near arcade perfect Ridge Racer was also available at launch.Nintendo 64 Super Mario 64When youre promising a move to 3D, what better way to do it than with your mascot character and throwing everything at it. Id argue this is more of a killer app than Super Mario World, as it was doing something totally new, rather than polishing an already proven formula to near perfection. This was certainly a risk on Nintendos part, as introducing 3D needed a dynamic camera system and a new type of controller, so no doubt it went through countless iterations to get the feel just right. And get it right it certainly did.The sheer variety of levels, ways of getting stars, movement of Mario, and the genius of revisiting levels to achieve new objectives combined to make one of the greatest, and most influential, games ever. And if that wasnt enough, Pilotwings 64 was ready to give you a super chill experience too. Top banana.Xbox Halo: Combat EvolvedLike with Sonys machine, Microsoft knew they needed a title on day one to grab the attention of the masses. Id argue Halo was more important to them than WipEout or Ridge Racer was to PlayStation in isolation, given Sony already had a strong hold on the US market by the time the OG Xbox launched. And what a fantastic first person shooter Halo was. It was probably the biggest leap in what a first person shooter could be since Doom first became shareware nearly a decade earlier, and many of the tropes we see in the genre today borrow heavily from it.Wii Wii SportsWhen the USP on your new console is motion control, what better way to show it than a series of mini-games that every farmer and their mum could play. And in turn, basing those mini0games on actual pastimes that everyone is familiar with, such as tenpin bowling and tennis.Motion controls can be quite a difficult concept to articulate but showing gran swinging a piece of plastic in the exact same way youd swing a tennis racquet and then showing her avatar on screen doing the same thing, was all that was needed. Yes, it wasnt the deepest of games, but when youve got pick up and play gameplay like this, and youre trying to sell a new machine with a weird name, its all you need.Plus, Zelda: Twilight Princess, which wasnt bad either.Nintendo Switch Zelda: Breath Of The WildOK Im biased here, even after eight years of distance between its launch and now, so a considerable amount of reflection, I still consider Breath Of The WIld to be the best game Ive played. Tears Of The Kingdom is the better game, but its forebearer is the better experience, if that makes sense.Again, a risk for Nintendo as they took a much-loved formula, turned it open world, sidelined dungeons, and introduced a slew of changes such as degrading weapons; even the most ardent detractors cannot say it didnt work, at least from a commercial point of view, if they cant get behind the artistic vision. A masterpiece.More TrendingSo my takeaway? Nintendo certainly has got a very good track record of launching with strong titles, sometimes taking a risk or two, so lets hope the upcoming one is no exception.By reader TheTruthSoul (PSN ID) The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild the game that sold the Switch (Nintendo)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. A great variety of urban development projects aim at enlivening this part of the city centre. One being to create more attractive subsidised and privately let housing. This was the context of the competition launched by the Bremen housing company GEWOBA for the development of a former car park. The vision was to develop a multi-storey residential building to explore "the possibility of accentuating the urban space in a special way". The award-winning design by Hild und K implemented the underlying specifications in an unusual form an eight-storey staggered structure. The hexagonal floor area of the residential building makes use of the wedge-shaped building plot to create an urban accent. The residential tower is prominently located at the tip of the site like a polygonal 'prow', creating a distinguishing entrance to the quarter when viewed from the nearby 'Neustadtwallanlagen'. Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! This striking landmark, which is mainly used for residential purposes, relates in a wider urban context to the buildings of the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. Save this picture!Open spaces at the edge of the hexagonal building form squares and further establish a relationship with the neighbouring surroundings and the attractive park. The view of the greenery is a particular feature of the commercial space on the ground floor of the building. The residential floors are grouped around a staircase core. It is generously proportioned and was designed to a high standard, unusual for a building occupied mainly by subsidised housing. Upgrading these common areas was inspired by Alvar Aalto's high-rise residential building in Bremen's Vahr district and is fundamental to the approach of Andreas Hild, Dionys Ottl and Matthias Haber, which aims at promoting community and social intermingling. Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The building typology arranges privately financed and subsidised flats around a common staircase. Following the idea of equality, both types are of the same standard in terms of spatial organization and furnishings. The unusual floor plan and the internal structure prevent individual living spaces from being solely oriented towards the north, without exception. The architecture thus allows the differences between subsidised and privately financed flats to fade into the background. Save this picture! The faade is clad with glazed bricks of different sizes, colors and laying directions. Together with the staggered form of the building, they create a lively interplay of light and shadow. In a way, their green hue can also be read programmatically: Solar cells are arranged on the green roof of the building and, together with a combined heat and power unit, ensure a sustainable energy supply. In addition, ecologically and economically positive effects were achieved by genuine architectural means: The compactness of the building type results in a noticeable reduction in material required for construction and energy needed to operate the building.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Am Hohentorsplatz 2, 28199 Bremen, GermanyLocation to be used only as a reference. Science News has been covering nuclear physics since our earliest incarnation, starting with scientists effort to decode the secrets of the atom. In the 1930s, readers learned about the discovery of the positron and scientists first splitting of a uranium atom. The first sustained nuclear reaction followed soon after, in a repurposed squash court at the University of Chicago in 1942.By then, what had once been a pursuit of basic knowledge had become a desperate wartime race to develop a nuclear weapon. The United States won that race. In 1945, U.S. forces dropped two atomic bombs on Japan that destroyed the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, hastening the end of World War II.
