  • The Gleeful Cruelty of the White House X Account
    www.theatlantic.com
TechnologyThe Gleeful Cruelty of the White House X AccountWelcome to the 4chan administration.By Charlie WarzelIllustration by The Atlantic. Source: Getty.March 28, 2025, 6:03 PM ET On March 18, the official White House account on X posted two photographs of Virginia Basora-Gonzalez, a woman who was arrested earlier this month by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The post described her as a previously deported alien felon convicted of fentanyl trafficking, and celebrated her capture as a win for the administration. In one photograph, Basora-Gonzalez is shown handcuffed and weeping in a public parking lot.The White House account posted about Basora-Gonzalez again yesterdaythis time, rendering her capture in the animated style of the beloved Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, who co-founded the animation company Studio Ghibli. Presumably, whoever runs the account had used ChatGPT, which has been going viral this week for an update to its advanced 4o model that enables it to transform photographs in the style of popular art, among other things. The White House did not respond directly to a request for comment, instead referring me to a post by Deputy Communications Director Kaelan Dorr that says, in part, The arrests will continue. The memes will continue. Its worth pausing here: The internet has been flooded with AI-generated images in this exact Studio Ghibli style. Some people have used it for images of pets or family members. Others opted for a trollish register, leading ChatGPT to spit out cutesy renderings of JFKs assassination, planes hitting the World Trade Center, and the torture at Abu Ghraib. On X, the prevalence of these images became an event unto itself, one in which the White House decided to participate by sharing a cartoon of a woman crying in handcuffs. This is how the White House account operates now. In previous administrations (including much of Donald Trumps first term), the account was used to post anodyne updates, highlight press releases, and share information about the administration. It was, to be fair, often painfully dull or written in the stilted language of a brand. Now the account exists to troll its political enemies and delight the MAGA faithful.Read: The internet is worse than a brainwashing machineOn Wednesday, the account posted a picture of Vice President J. D. Vance shooting a tactical rifle, referring to the bullets he fired as freedom seeds, a term popular among gun YouTubers. When Google Maps adopted the Gulf of America language pushed by the administration, the White House account celebrated by sharing a video in which the words Gulf of Mexico are wiped off the globe. In February, it posted an AI-generated picture of Trump as an American monarch, wearing a crown. The images caption reads, Long live the king. After the disastrous Oval Office ambush of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the account posted a photo of Vance staring at Zelensky with the caption Have you said thank you once? Although the account sometimes shares actual news, its frequently preoccupied by rapid-response engagement bait for MAGA diehards. Less information, more content. The intent is not to inform but to go viral.Beyond the fact that this kind of shitposting is so obviously beneath the office, the posts are genuinely sinister. By adding a photo of an ICE arrest to a light-hearted viral trend, for instance, the White House account manages to perfectly capture the sociopathic, fascistic tone of ironic detachment and glee of the internets darkest corners and most malignant trolls. The official X account of the White House isnt just full of low-rent 4chan musings, its an alarming signal of an administration thats fluent in internet extremism and seemingly dedicated to pursuing its casual cruelty as a chief political export. To be clear, the actions of the second Trump administrationthe dismantling of the federal government via DOGE, the apprehension and detainment of immigrants and green-card holders with seemingly no due processare of far more consequence than what it posts on social media. But White House posts are not random missives either: Theyre official government communications from the executive branch, sent out to 1.4 million followers, to say nothing of whatever additional reach these posts receive via algorithmic recommendation and ad hoc sharing. The accounts true obsession is immigration: @WhiteHouse has posted dozens of mugshots of immigrants arrested by ICE. Each one lists an offense theyve been arrested for in big block letters, and usually the catchphrase MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN is appended. Earlier this month, after the Department of Homeland Security commented on the deportation of a Lebanese professor at Brown Universitya violation of a court order temporarily protecting her from expulsionthe White House account responded by posting a photo of Trump waving goodbye from a McDonalds drive-through window. (The picture was taken during a 2024 campaign stunt.) On Valentines Day, the account wrote, Roses are red / Violets are blue / Come here illegally / And well deport you.And in an infamous example, on February 18, the White House account posted a 41-second video of faceless men being shackled and marched onto planes. The posts caption read, ASMR: Illegal Alien Deportation Flight. (ASMR is short for autonomous sensory meridian response, or the titillating sensation caused by certain noises, such as whispering, tapping, or crinkling; videos of people making such noises are enormously popular across social media.) The subtext of the White House post is far from subtle and is reminiscent of something out of 4chans notoriously bigoted politics message board: Watching allegedly undocumented immigrants bound in chains is a pleasurable, even sensual experience. Like any trolling post, its meant to be simultaneously taken seriously and played off as a dumb online joke. Even those inside the Trump administration seemed taken aback by the audacity of the post. Even some MAGA supporters appeared uncomfortable by @WhiteHouses brazenness. If you guys could stick with the grim shock and awe, and leave the edgy gloating to those of us who dont work in the White House I think that would probably be better for optics, one user wrote on X. The ASMR deportation video, as of this writing, has been viewed almost 104 million times on X.Exactly who is running the White House X account is an object of fascination for close observers. Some accounts fantasize that Trumps college-age son, Barron, is running it. Those outside of Trump fandom have insisted that it is being run by edgelordsone post referred to the operator as an incel reddit user. One Bluesky user described the account as lowkey goebbelsmaxxing, a reference to the Nazi propagandist. (The White House did not respond to a request to identify who writes the accounts posts.) What all the speculation suggests is that at least someone with access to the account is intimately familiar with far-right internet spaces and culture, specifically Groypers, a term for the loose online movement that has succeeded the alt-right. Earlier this year, the writer John Ganz argued that Groyperism totally suffuses the cultural environment of the right. He and others have suggested that the culture is present in the offices of Republican representatives in Washington, D.C., including in the White House. (A Trump staffer was fired in the first administration for associating with white nationalists; hes now back, in a role at the State Department.) Although the identities of whoever is running the account are, at present, unknown, whats clear is that their output appears to delight prominent extremists online. The message coming from the account, to borrow language from one far-right X user, is clear: The posters are in control.Read: X is a white-supremacist siteAnd the posters have goals. The first is to engage and supply their loyal audiences with constant memes and content. The second is perhaps more strategic. The accounts blatant humiliation of immigrants who it alleges have heinous criminal records is intentional. The goal is to goad their opponents into defending people accused of indefensible crimes. The primary accusation from the MAGA faithful toward people who are outraged about the White Houses Studio Ghibli post or the ASMR video is that the left is more concerned with defending fentanyl dealers and immigrants accused of rape and robbery than they are about the safety of the country. Disappointing that folks are more upset about this meme than they are about the fentanyl crisis, Dorr said in the same post that the White House pointed me to. But this is a false binary; in all cases, the chief objections are to the dehumanization and glee on display and the worrying lack of due process. The White House is after something more than just shock value. Its propaganda, and Trumps allies are learning the playbook. This week, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a video on X from a prison in El Salvador where deported immigrants are being held. Behind Noem are dozens of men in one jail cell, many shirtless with tattoos; their heads have all been shaved during intake. The prisoners are props, a backdrop for Noems message of intimidation to undocumented immigrants: If you do not leave, we will hunt you down, arrest you, and you could end up in this El Salvadorian prison. Like the ASMR post or the Ghibli cartoon, the implication is that these deportees are utterly undeserving of any shred of human dignity. There are many other examples, such as FBI Director Kash Patels recent posts, one of which features him walking around in camouflage, set to rock music, as FBI agents blow open doors with explosives. Taken together, the posts offer a bracing but useful insight into how the administration sees itself, and the message of casual cruelty and overwhelming force it wants to project to the rest of the world. That this administration should fully embrace the tactics and aesthetics of online far-right extremists and technological tools like generative AI to further its message makes perfect sense. These are reliable ways to increase engagement, gain attention, and illustrate a precise vision of the future they want to usher in. Even so, the account is chilling. Those whove spent enough time in the online spaces that have clearly influenced this administrationor at least whoever runs its social accountsknow how this goes. This is a game of accelerationism and nihilism, using tools and platforms that excel at depersonalizing, thus rendering empathy for others ever more difficult. That this sociopathic posting style is coming out of this administrationthat it has been so thoroughly mainstreamed by the rightsuggests that the cultural architecture of the internet has changed. There is still a fever swamp, but now the White House sits on top of it.Explore More Topics

  • Nathan S. Horton House // c.1860
    buildingsofnewengland.com
This modest, Italianate style house was built around 1860 by a carpenter and builder as his own residence. Nathan S. Horton (1819-1916) was a busy builder in Central Falls, Rhode Island in the mid-late 19th century as the population boomed along with the industrial growth and wealth that the city saw. For his own residence, Horton built this two-story wood-frame house with side entrances and porches, paired brackets in the eaves, and arched top windows, all commonly found in the Italianate style, popular around the time of the Civil War. Mr. Horton lived to his late 90s and likely remained in this home until his death.

StrandsNew York TimesLooking for Fridays Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:A very specific type of Strands today, and if you participated in a particular activity, this may be easier to solve than most. Though I did get a perfect score even without that, no hints needed. How To Play StrandsThe New York Times Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. Its in beta for now, which means itll only stick around if enough people play it every day.Theres a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and youll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.Youll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.Play Puzzles & Games on ForbesEvery letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and its possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If youre playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess. If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, youll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.Be warned: Youll need to be on your toes. Sometimes youll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes. What Is Todays Strands Hint? The NYT hint will be first and then I will make one of my own too.Join the ChorusAnd my hint is:Types of VoiceWhat Are Todays Strands Answers? The spangram will be first, and then the answer list is below that. Lenovo ThinkPad X9-14 review: an iconic laptop continues to evolveMSRP$1,659.00 Score Details The Lenovo ThinkPad X9-14 is a well-made ThinkPad that doesn't really look like one.ProsSolid build qualityThin and lightGood productivity performanceGreat OLED displayExcellent keyboard and touchpadRange of consumer and business featuresConsBattery life isn't greatExpensiveThinness a bit of a gimmickTable of ContentsTable of ContentsSpecs and configurationDesignKeyboard and touchpadWebcam and connectivityPerformanceBattery lifeDisplay and audioA business laptop with more than just business appealFor years, the ThinkPad lineup was easy to spot. Every ThinkPad featured the same iconic design, from the red-on-black color scheme to the keyboard design to the TrackPoint nubbin. Then, Lenovo introduced the ThinkPad Z series that altered the design a bit, and now theres a new model that takes the lineup even further away from tradition.Recommended VideosThe ThinkPad X9-14 is a brand-new design that looks and feels even less like the ThinkPad of yesterday. Thats not a bad thing, because the new laptop has a lot going for it although it doesnt quite make it onto our list of the best business laptops. But its a sure sign that Lenovo isnt holding onto the past.RelatedLenovo ThinkPad X9-14Dimensions12.28 x 8.36 x 0.26-0.68 inchesWeight2.8 poundsDisplay14.0-inch 16:10 FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS, 120Hz14.0-inch 16:10 2.8K (2880 x 1800) AMOLED, 60HzCPUIntel Core Ultra 5 226VIntel Core Ultra 5 228VIntel Core Ultra 5 238V vProIntel Core Ultra 7 258VIntel Core Ultra 7 268V vProGPUIntel Arc 130VIntel Arc 140VMemory16GB32GBStorage256GB SSD512GB SSD1TB SSD2TB SSDPorts2 x USB-C with Thunderbolt 41 x HDMI 2.11 x 3.5mm headphone jackCamera8MP with infrared camera for Windows 11 HelloWi-FiWi-Fi 7 and Bluetoth 5.4Battery55 watt-hourOperating systemWindows 11Price$1,239+The ThinkPad X9-14 is a business laptop that most likely will be purchased by companies on contract that will have customized pricing. But, if you were to go to the Lenovo Web store and purchase the laptop yourself, youll pay $1,239 for the bast configuration with an Intel Core Ultra 5 226V chipset, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and 14.0-inch FHD+ IPS display. I reviewed the laptop with a 14.0-inch 2.8K OLED panel ($100) and a 512GB SSD ($100). You can upgrade up to a Core Ultra 7 268V chipset with vPro for $360, which also ups the RAM to 32GB. Upgrading to a 2TB SSD costs $240. The most expensive configuration runs $2,289.Those are all expensive prices, but not unusually so for business-focused laptops. Some premium laptops with similar configurations cost around the same or more, such as those from HP and Dell. Even some consumer premium laptops cost the same. So, the bottom line is youre not paying a huge premium for those business-centric features.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe first thing youll notice when you handle the ThinkPad X9-14 is that its incredibly thin at least outside of what Lenovo calls the Engine Hub that houses the critical components and the thermal system to keep them cool. The laptop is the thinnest ever at 0.26 inches in that front portion, even thinner than the Apple MacBook Air 13 at 0.44 inches. But, it bloats up to 0.68 inches at the hub. So, its both extremely thin and just very thin at the same time. Its reasonably light at 2.8 pounds, but not the lightest 14-inch laptop youll find. Ultimately, Id rate the design as just a little bit of a gimmick. The laptop feels very robust, as do all ThinkPads. Its subjected to a host of MIL-STD 810H tests, meaning its guaranteed to last. Thats thanks to an all-aluminum construction that feels quite solid. Its as good as any other similar laptop in this regard, and better than most. Thats important for a laptop thats aimed at business users, who are as likely as any users to be traveling extensively with a laptop in tow.Aesthetically, the ThinkPad X9-14 doesnt look much like a ThinkPad of old. Its all-black and features the iconic red dots over the i on the lid and the palm rest logos, but the similarity ends there. ThinkPads have historically sported more red throughout the design, even the ThinkPad Z13 that eschewed the all-black aesthetic. The ThinkPad X9-14 cuts a slim figure thanks to the thin front portion of the chassis, but the Engine Hub kind of sticks out a little more than I like. Its a good looking laptop, but nothing that really stands out to me.As a laptop aimed at business users, the ThinkPad X9-14 has several features aimed at better security and manageability. You can get Intel vPro capabilities that support enterprise management solutions, along with enhanced security and access to a higher level of support. Its also a member of Lenovos Aura Edition laptops, with a variety of extra functionality. They include additional privacy guard and alerts, timers for extra distraction-free work, collaboration features, wellness, and power modes to optimize performance. Those arent unique to the Thinkpad X9-14, but theyre available to any users who want them.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThinkPad keyboards were once indistinguishable. They had highly sculpted keycaps, tight spacing with seven levels of keys, and deep switches that required a bit of force to depress. Really, they werent my favorite, because I prefer more key spacing and lighter, more precise switches. Thats exactly why Apples Magic Keyboard is my favorite, and the ThinkPad X9-14s version is very similar. The switches are a little deeper, but theyre still snappy with a bounce in the bottoming action. And there the layout is more traditional (i.e., non-ThinkPad) and spacious, with Ctrl and Alt keys that arent annoyingly reversed from the usual. Id rate it very high on my list in terms of comfortable long-term typing, and an improvement over the old-school ThinkPad keyboard.Similarly, the touchpad is larger than usual for ThinkPads. First, theres no red TrackPoint nubbin in the middle of the keyboard and therefore some of the touchpad space isnt taken for an extra set of buttons. Thats huge departure, dropping on of the most iconic ThinkPad features. I suspect, though, that not too many users will be upset at the omission. The touchpad itself is an excellent haptic version thats almost as good as Apples Force Touch version. Apples has the advantage of a Force Click feature where clicking a little harder invokes extra functionality. But, the ThinkPad touchpad arguably has more customization options. The display is also touch-enabled, which I like. Overall, this is probably my favorite ThinkPad Ive reviewed in terms of controlling things and entering information.Connectivity is light for a 14-inch machine. There are two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 and an HDMI 2.1 connection, along with a 3.5mm audio jack. Thats one of the prices you pay for that ultra thin section. Each port is located at the Engine Hub. Wireless connectivity is fully up-to-date with Wi-Fi 7.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe ThinkPad X9-14 has an optional 8MP webcam, which was on my review unit, and it provided a clear image in my testing. It supports the Aura Edition collaboration features mentioned above, including low light enhancement, better background blur, virtual presenter, and more. In addition, the Intel Lunar Lake chipset has a fast Neural Processing Unit (NPU) supporting Microsofts Copilot+ PC initiative for more efficient on-device AI processing.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThere are several 8-core/8-thread Intel Lunar Lake (Core Ultra Series 2) chipsets available with the ThinkPad X9-14, from the Core Ultra 5 226V up to the Core Ultra 7 268V chipsets. All run at a base of 17 watts, with various clock speeds. Lunar Lake is primarily focused on efficiency, and its performance falls somewhere between the older 15-watt U-series and 28-watt H-series Meteor Lake chipsets. You can also get versions with Intels vPro functionality. As you can see in our benchmarks, theres not a huge difference between Lunar Lake versions in performance in CPU-intensive tasks. Its considerably slower than the other Windows efficiency option, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X chipsets, and the AMD Ryzen AI 9 and Apple M4 chipsets are a lot faster.. The Core Ultra 5 226V also uses the slower Intel Arc 130V integrated graphics, and that shows up in the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme benchmark. The ThinkPad X9-14 is fast enough for productivity work, but gamers and creators wont be too excited.Cinebench R24(single/multi)Geekbench 6(single/multi)Handbrake(seconds)3DMarkWild Life ExtremeSamsung Galaxy Book5 Pro 360(Core Ultra 5 226V / Intel Arc 130V)114 / 5732587 / 10260924740HP EliteBook X G1a(Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 / Radeon 890M)109 / 10952769 / 14786607236HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14(Core Ultra 7 258V / Intel Arc 140V)116 / 5982483 / 10725997573HP Spectre x360 14(Core Ultra 7 155H / Intel Arc)102 / 4852176 / 1198093N/ALenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition(Core Ultra 7 258V / Intel Arc 140V)109 / 6302485 / 10569885217Asus Zenbook S 14(Core Ultra 7 258V / Intel Arc 140V)112 / 4522738 / 107341137514HP OmniBook X(Snapdragon X Elite / Adreno)101 / 7492377 / 13490N/A6165MacBook Air(M4 10/8)172 / 8543751 / 14801877827Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsTheres just a 55 watt-hour battery in the ThinkPad X9-14, likely a result of the incredibly thin chassis in all but the engine hub. Frankly, thats not a lot of battery capacity for a 14-inch laptop with a power-hungry high-res OLED display. The Lunar Lake chipsets are efficient, but I wasnt expecting great battery life. And, I didnt get it. Compared to the other laptops in the comparison group using todays more efficient chipsets for Windows, including also Qualcomms Snapdragon X, the ThinkPad X9-14 wasnt even close. Some of those also have OLED displays, although they also have larger batteries. Interestingly, the HP EliteBook X G1a with the AMD Ryzen AI 9 chipset also didnt get the same kind of battery life as Intels and Qualcomms latest chipsets. As has been the case for several years, Apple Silicon is overall the most efficient. The bottom line is that battery life is not a strength here.Web browsingVideoCinebench R24Lenovo Thinkpad X9-14(Core Ultra 226V)7 hours, 39 minutes6 hours, 27 minutes1 hour, 33 minutesHP EliteBook X G1a(Ryzen AI 9 HX 375)N/A7 hours, 27 minutes1 hour, 27 minutesSamsung Galaxy Book5 Pro 360(Core Ultra 5 226V)12 hours, 50 minutes19 hours, 30 minutes2 hours, 18 minutesHP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14(Core Ultra 7 258V)11 hours, 5 minutes15 hours, 46 minutes2 hours, 14 minutesLenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition(Core Ultra 7 258V)14 hours, 16 minutes17 hours, 31 minutes2 hours, 15 minutesAsus Zenbook S 14(Core Ultra 7 258V)16 hours, 47 minutes18 hours, 35 minutes3 hours, 33 minutesMicrosoft Surface Laptop(Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100)14 hours, 21 minutes22 hours, 39 minutesN/AHP Omnibook X(Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100)13 hours, 37 minutes22 hours, 4 minutes1 hour, 52 minutesApple MacBook Air(Apple M4 10/8)16 hours, 30 minutes20 hours, 31 minutes3 hours, 47 minutesMark Coppock / Digital TrendsThere are two display options with the ThinkPad X9-14, both 14-inch panels at a 16:10 aspect ratio. One is a 2.8K (2880 x 1800) OLED panel running at 60Hz, the other is an FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS panel with a variable 120Hz refresh rate. Thats a mixed bag, with the sharper display offering up brighter colors and OLEDs usual inky blacks and the IPS panel offering a smoother user interface and better battery life.I tested the OLED display, and my colorimeter found it a little different than most other OLED panels Ive tested. It was very at 511 nits, brighter than most OLED displays and well above our older 300-nit threshold. My colorimeter couldnt measure the contrast ratio, something I havent seen from an OLED display for a while, but blacks were perfect. Coloers werent quite as wide at 100% sRGB, 93% AdobeRGB (most are 97% or higher), and 100% DCI-P3, and accuracy wasnt nearly as good as usual at a DeltaE of 1.62. Almost every OLED panel is below the cutoff for excellent displays of 1.0.The display is still great for every user, and its support for Dolby Vision bodes well for media consumption. The IPS panel is for anyone who doesnt care as much about colors and blacks and wants better battery life than I saw in my testing.Theres a lot to like about the ThinkPad X9-14, and not just for ThinkPad fans. In fact, anyone who came here looking for a traditional ThinkPad design will be disappointed. The ThinkPad X9-14 is much more like other thin-and-light laptops today than that iconic brand, and thats not actually a bad thing. While the thin design is a bit of a gimmick, because you still need to contend with an Engine Hub that makes it a more typical thickness, its still light enough and well-built enough to be comfortably portable. Its fast enough for productivity users and has a very good OLED display option although that has an outsized impact on battery life. Business users will like it a lot, but consumers should consider it as well.Editors Recommendations

President Donald Trump has issued a wave of executive orders targeting high-profile law firms.Trump has restricted clearances ultimately limiting the way they do business for firms that have clashed with his administration. While some firms have agreed to Trump's demands, others have sued the administration.President Donald Trump has taken a swing at major law firms over the past month, ordering reviews of government contracts and canceling security clearances for some firm employees. Some have made deals with the president, while others are refusing to throw in the towel.Trump has accused the Big Law firms including Paul Weiss, Perkins Coie, and Covington & Burling, among others of weaponizing the judicial system. His orders have, in turn, made it harder for the firms to continue conducting business as usual. Several have alleged in lawsuits that the executive orders intended to chill free speech and deter clients from doing business with the firms. He has called out a string of law firms that he believes have wronged him in some capacity, have worked with his political opponents, or have had diversity initiatives that are counter to his anti-DEI efforts. What's more, Trump instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to identify firms with "frivolous" cases against the administration so that they could be targeted for further executive action.Whether they're on the ropes or down for the count, here's the top firms Trump is taking on, as well as a look at where the legal process stands.Paul WeissEarlier in March, Trump issued an executive order directed at the prominent New York City-based law firm Paul Weiss, where he railed against the attorney Mark Pomerantz and decried what he said was "unlawful discrimination" from diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at the firm.Pomerantz previously left Paul Weiss to aid the Manhattan District Attorney's office as it probed Trump's finances. When Pomerantz resigned as special district attorney in February 2022, he wrote in a departing letter that he believed Trump was "guilty of numerous felony violations."In the order, Trump sought to revoke security clearances and bar access to government buildings for attorneys of the firm. Such a sweeping directive could also include federal courthouses, a scenario that would be detrimental to the firm's work. However, Trump just days later rescinded the executive order and announced an agreement with Paul Weiss chairman Brad Karp. Trump said the firm would provide $40 million in pro bono work for causes that the administration supports and end its DEI policies.Karp received a heap of criticism, with many questioning why Paul Weiss didn't challenge Trump's order. In an email to the firm's attorneys, he said there was a desire from the outset to challenge the directive. In the same email, though, Karp argued that even if Paul Weiss won in court, it would become "persona non grata" with the Trump White House, which could prompt a wave of clients to switch to other firms and subsequently threaten the viability of the firm."It was very likely that our firm would not be able to survive a protracted dispute with the administration," Karp wrote in the email.Perkins CoieIn early March, Trump targeted the law firm Perkins Coie, issuing an executive order to suspend the security clearances of the firm's attorneys and criticizing its diversity and inclusion policies. In the order, Trump called out what he said was the firm's "dishonest and dangerous activity."The president, in his order, noted the firm's representation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton his rival in the 2016 presidential election during that year's tumultuous campaign. However, Perkins Coie struck back, filing a lawsuit against the administration for actions that it said "violates core constitutional rights, including the rights to free speech and due process.""At the heart of the order is an unlawful attack on the freedom of all Americans to select counsel of their choice without fear of retribution or punishment from the government," Perkins Coie managing director Bill Malley said in a statement in March. "We were compelled to take this action to protect our firm and our clients."The day after Perkins Coie filed its suit, a federal judge agreed to temporarily block part of the president's executive order.Perkins Coie, in a statement, said the ruling was "an important first step in ensuring this unconstitutional Executive Order is never enforced."Covington & Burling LLPTrump in late February signed a memorandum to evaluate federal contracts and direct the suspension of security clearances for some employees at Covington & Burling, a DC-based law firm known for its antitrust work. The president in the memo said he was suspending the clearances of individuals who advised former special counsel Jack Smith.Smith brought two federal cases against Trump one for election interference in the 2020 presidential election and the other for retaining classified documents but both were dropped after the president won reelection to a second term in November 2024.In the memo, Trump went after individuals whom he said were "involved in the weaponization of government" and named Peter Koski, a lawyer at Covington representing Smith.A Covington spokesperson earlier in March said it was representing Smith in an "individual" capacity."We recently agreed to represent Jack Smith when it became apparent that he would become a subject of a government investigation," the spokesperson said in a statement. "We look forward to defending Mr. Smith's interests and appreciate the trust he has placed in us to do so."Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLPSkadden made a deal with Trump, acting before it was singled out in any executive orders. The firm promised to provide $100 million in pro bono legal services "to causes that the President and Skadden both support," Trump announced on Friday.Skadden also affirmed its commitment to merit-based hiring and employee retention, Trump said. The firm also agreed that it would refrain from engaging in "illegal DEI discrimination," according to a copy of the agreement that Trump shared on Truth Social. In a statement, Jeremy London, Skadden's executive partner, said the firm "engaged proactively" with the administration to reach the agreement."We firmly believe that this outcome is in the best interests of our clients, our people, and our Firm," London said.Speaking from the White House, Trump referred to the deal as "essentially a settlement."Within the firm, some associates and employees expressed frustration about the deal, calling it the beginning of the end for Skadden. In the weeks leading up to the agreement, Skadden associate Rachel Cohen publicly resigned and circulated an open letter among associates at top firms calling out their employers for what she has described as inaction in the face of the administration's attacks. After the deal was announced, another employee, Brenna Frey, also resigned publiclyElias Law GroupThe chair of Elias Law Group took a different approach after it was targeted by the administration.Trump named the Elias Law Group in his "frivolous" lawsuits memo, formally titled "Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Court."It claimed that the law firm was "deeply involved in the creation of a false 'dossier' by a foreign national designed to provide a fraudulent basis for Federal law enforcement to investigate a Presidential candidate in order to alter the outcome of the Presidential election."The memo went on to say that the firm "intentionally sought to conceal the role of his client failed Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the dossier."Marc Elias, the Democratic election lawyer who founded and chairs the group, released a statement swinging back at Trump, whose actions target "every attorney and law firm who dares to challenge his assault on the rule of law," he said."President Trump's goal is clear," Elias said in the statement. "He wants lawyers and law firms to capitulate and cower until there is no one left to oppose his Administration in court."Adding that American democracy is in a state of "peril," Elias said his law firm would not cower."Elias Law Group will not be deterred from fighting for democracy in court," he said. "There will be no negotiation with this White House about the clients we represent or the lawsuits we bring on their behalf."Jenner & BlockTrump signed an order naming Jenner & Block onTrump's order singled out Andrew Weissmann, a former Jenner attorney who Trump accused of building his career around "weaponized government and abuse of power." Weissmann was a lead prosecutor in Robert Mueller's Special Counsel's Office, which investigated Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and its ties to Russia.Jenner issued a statement calling the order an "unconstitutional executive order that has already been declared unlawful by a federal court.""We remain focused on serving and safeguarding our clients' interests with the dedication, integrity, and expertise that has defined our firm for more than one hundred years and will pursue all appropriate remedies," the statement from Jenner said.Jenner also fought back with a lawsuit filed on Friday. The firm is represented by Cooley LLP, a liberal-leaning firm that has hired lawyers from Democratic administrations. On Friday, Judge John D. Bates of the US District Court for the District of Columbia issued a temporary restraining order that keeps the Trump administration from taking action against Jenner.Following the ruling, Jenner said in a statement that the order holds "no legal weight.""We will continue to do what we have always done, our job as lawyers and fearless advocates for our clients," the firm said.WilmerHaleThe Trump administration has also targeted WilmerHale, which employed Mueller and other lawyers who worked with the Justice Department to investigate ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign. On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order that suspended security clearances for WilmerHale employees and limited their access to federal buildings. The order also revoked WilmerHale's government contracts for engaging in "partisan representations to achieve political ends" and "efforts to discriminate on the basis of race."In contrast with other firms that have inked deals with the president, WilmerHale filed a lawsuit. The firm hired Paul Clement, the conservative legal superstar of the firm Clement & Murphy, to fight back against the Trump administration."This lawsuit is absolutely critical to vindicating the First Amendment, our adversarial system of justice, and the rule of law," Clement told Business Insider in a statement. On Friday afternoon, Judge Richard J. Leon of the US District Court for the District of Columbia approved a motion for a temporary restraining order to halt executive actions against WilmerHale."There is no doubt this retaliatory action chills speech and legal advocacy, or that it qualifies as a constitutional harm," Leon wrote.A spokesperson for WilmerHale called the executive order unconstitutional and praised the court's "swift action."Recommended video

  • Crowds Turn Out Across the U.S. for Tesla Takedown Protests
    gizmodo.com
Hundreds of Tesla dealerships across the United States, Canada, and Europe saw protesters descend upon their lots on Saturday as part of a global day of action organized by the Tesla Takedown protest movement. Demonstrators turned out in significant numbers in large cities, including New York City and Chicago, with many holding signs featuring anti-Elon Musk and anti-Trump administration messaging.Accounts from across the country continue to pour in, but despite the presence of counter-protesters in some locations, the demonstrations seem to have largely gone without incidents of violence or arrests. An account from the Boston Herald says that two people were injured at a Tesla Takedown demonstration in the Boston suburb of Watertown when a black pickup truck allegedly clipped the protesters with the vehicles side mirror. More than 100 protesters were reportedly on the scene during the incident, and both people hit by the vehicle refused medical treatment and did not suffer serious injuries. Police in Columbus, Ohio were also seen escorting two anti-Tesla demonstrators in dinosaur costumes from a Tesla dealership during a Tesla Takedown event. In Florida, Attorney General James Uthmeier ordered law enforcement to monitor the events and respond with a zero-tolerance policy for crimes against property, but local reporting indicated that dozens of protests occurred across the state without incident.Local reports suggest that at least 150 people turned out to a Tesla Takedown event in the outskirts of Chicago, more than 300 people showed up to a protest outside of Syracuse, New York, more than 600 in a suburb of Baltimore. Similar numbers were reported in St. Louis, Missouri, Buffalo, New York, Salt Lake City, Utah, and other cities. Social media posts show large demonstrations in Seattle and Ann Arbor, Michigan, while some counter-protesters were documented in Meridian, Idaho and Paramus, New Jerseythough the pro-Musk demonstrations appear to have been significantly smaller than the Tesla Takedown events. While most of the protests took place in the United States, there were international demonstrations as part of the day of action. NBC News reported protesters turned out at Tesla dealerships in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Berlin, Germany. London also saw a large turnout of Tesla Takedown demonstrators. The organizers of the Tesla Takedown protests have chosen Tesla as their target as a means to inflict damage onto CEO Elon Musks bottom line, a response to his involvement in the Trump administration, including his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency, which has led to dramatic reductions in the federal workforce. A common theme among the signage was kicking Musk out of the government (or the country) and demanding an end to the slashing of government services and social safety nets. Matt Novak/Gizmodo Matt Novak/Gizmodo Matt Novak/Gizmodo Matt Novak/Gizmodo Matt Novak/Gizmodo Matt Novak/GizmodoAbout 300 protesters showed up to a protest in San Diego, where theres a retail storefront at the mall near the University of California, San Diego. Despite being so close to a college campus, the protest crowd skewed older, a common theme at demonstrations over the past two months. An 83-year-old retired geologist named Dorrie told Gizmodo she had two sisters protesting as well, one in Boston and one in Orange County, California, both concerned about what Elon Musk was doing to the country. Hes putting seniors on the street. Turning senior citizens into homeless people, she told Gizmodo.I dont know how were gonna get out of it, either, Dorrie continued. Have you heard any creative ways of how, you know, you screw up the system for four years and then you change it? Everybody gets their jobs back, you know?
