  • We planned to use our long layover to explore a new city. It completely backfired, but we'd try it again.

I didn't realize I'd need a visa to leave the airport in Istanbul during my layover. prmustafa/Getty Images 2025-03-30T14:58:01Z SaveSaved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? As an American, I didn't realize I needed a visa to leave Istanbul's airport during my long layover. The oversight cost me more time, money, and stress than anticipated. Now I know that researching country-specific entry and visa rules can prevent costly mistakes. My fianc and I have a knack for piecing together budget-friendly flights, and last August, we put our skills to the test to attend a wedding in Crete. To save a few hundred bucks on our trip out of New York, we booked a flight that included a 13-hour layover in Istanbul and a brief stop in Athens. Many people in our lives thought stopping for over half a day in one place sounded miserable, but we had a plan: We'd maximize our layover and use it as a chance to explore a new city and visit an old friend. However, shortly after we arrived in Istanbul, things took an unexpected turn.Unfortunately, our layover didn't go as plannedMy friend wasn't feeling well, so we scratched our plans to meet her in the city center. We weren't worried because we could still explore Istanbul on our own and we decided to take advantage of Turkish Airlines' free city tour for layovers. When we arrived at the tour desk, though, we learned that Americans need a transit visa if they want to exit the airport in Turkey. We had no idea and hadn't made any arrangements in advance. We're usually very careful about checking travel guidelines and regulations and I couldn't believe such a seemingly small oversight would change our plans entirely.Although we could've tried applying for emergency visas, doing so would've cost us a lot more than we'd budgeted for our brief layover. So, we now had 13 hours to kill without leaving the airport. We made the most of being stuck, and I learned a valuable travel lesson We weren't able to leave the Istanbul Airport during our trip. Mina Lisanin We tried to make the most of spending hours upon hours walking around the Istanbul Airport, which is actually quite beautiful. As an interior designer, I genuinely enjoyed taking in the architecture and design details of the modern and elegant space. We also ended up shopping and buying overpriced airport food.Between meals, drinks, souvenirs, and my fianc's spontaneous purchase of a drone, our layover costs quickly added up. Unfortunately, in a few hours, we'd basically spent the amount of money we'd saved by booking a flight with layovers instead of a nonstop one.The next leg of the journey wasn't without its own set of hurdles either. When we finally reached Athens, my luggage broke as we stepped off the plane. After 24 hours of no sleep, multiple layovers, and unexpected expenses, we were exhausted when we got to Crete. However, even with these mishaps, our Istanbul layover was a unique experience that I wouldn't write off completely though we'd definitely be better prepared next time. The biggest lesson we learned is that it's crucial to double-check each country's entry requirements before assuming we can explore a new place during a layover. And, if you need a visa to exit an airport, apply for it online before the trip to save both time and money.Recommended video

  • Trump says he 'couldn't care less' about higher foreign car prices and suggests he won't fire anyone over the Signal leak

"If you make your car in the United States, you're going to make a lot of money," Trump said. President Donald Trump spoke with NBC News on Saturday about impending auto tariffs and the Signal leak.Trump said he "couldn't care less" if foreign carmakers raise prices after his tariffs hit.He also suggested that he would not be firing anyone over the Signal group chat scandal.President Donald Trump has said that he "couldn't care less" if foreign carmakers raise prices after his impending tariffs take effect and suggested that he has no plans to fire any officials linked to the Signal group chat scandal.Speaking to NBC News on Saturday, Trump denied that he had warned foreign automaker CEOs not to raise prices after levies on imported automobiles come into effect early next month."No, I never said that. I couldn't care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars," Trump said."If you make your car in the United States, you're going to make a lot of money. If you don't, you're going to have to probably come to the United States, because if you make your car in the United States, there is no tariff," he added.Trump has imposed sweeping tariffs since returning to the White House, largely targeting Canada, Mexico, and China, as well as the steel and aluminum industries. But on Wednesday, the president turned his attention to the auto sector, announcing a new 25% tariff on all imported vehicles and certain automobile parts set to come into effect on April 3."This will continue to spur growth like you haven't seen before," Trump said in the Oval Office before signing the executive order, which said that cars and car parts were being imported into the US "in such quantities and under such circumstances as to threaten to impair the national security of the United States."The announcement has fueled warnings of retaliation from some US trading partners."We must consider steps to respond appropriately. We have all possible options on the table," Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told the country's parliament this week.Elsewhere in the interview, Trump addressed the Signal texting scandal that dominated headlines after The Atlantic's editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg revealed that he had been mistakenly added to a group chat where senior US officials including Defense secretary Pete Hegseth discussed plans to carry out military strikes on Yemen's Houthi rebels. The incident sparked concern among both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, with some calling for Michael Waltz, the national security adviser who added Goldberg to the group, to be fired. But Trump appears to have come down on Waltz's side, telling NBC: "I don't fire people because of fake news and because of witch hunts."Trump added that he still had confidence in Waltz and Hegseth and said the strikes were "tremendously successful."Recommended video

  • NASA Wipes Graphic Novels About Women Astronauts From Its Websites
    gizmodo.com
NASA has scrubbed two graphic novels featuring female astronauts from its website, in a move that is in apparent alignment with the Trump administrations anti-DEI stance. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies are those that generally promote fair treatment of people of all backgrounds. The Trump administration is not a fan of DEIon the first day of Trumps second term, the White House called DEI programs illegal and immoral and declared that the government is committed to serving every person with equal dignity and respect. To that end, it seems that NASA removed graphic novels about a fictional female astronaut named Callie Rodriguez from its website. As reported by Keith Cowing of NASA Watch, the graphic novels had been online for years. (Apparently NASA DEI Sanitation Squad is using my postings to help them delete things, Cowing wrote.) The series titles were First Woman: NASAs Promise for Humanity and First Woman: Expanding Our Universe. The space agency left up releases announcing editions of the graphic novels and updates to the series, but the main landing pagededicated to Rodriguezs story as the (fictional) first woman to walk on the Moonnow yields a 404 error. NASAs Press Secretary Bethany Stevens did not respond to a request for comment. In January, NASA moved to terminate diversity programs, and last month the agency informed its employees that they could no longer display pronouns in their online profiles, from email signatures to their Microsoft Outlook accounts. This week alone has been a turbulent one for NASA under the Trump administrationseveral days ago, the agency terminated $420 million in contracts, according to the the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has slashing headcount at the federal government since its creation by executive order on Trumps first day in office. It remains to be seen how drastically DOGE, under the leadership of Elon Musk, will alter operations at the nations space agency.

  • YouTube Pauses Monetization for 2 Huge Fake Movie Trailer Accounts
    gizmodo.com
A few days ago, it was reported major Hollywood studios were monetizing fake movie trailers that use generative AI. Seeing this, YouTubes now decided to cut that off and paused a pair of channels best known for those trailers. Per Deadline, which initially reported on this, YouTubes turned off the ad revenue for Screen Culture and KH Films. The former is the most famous of the two, and founder Nikhil Chaudhari was quoted throughout Deadlines report. Some of its most famous videos have been trailers for Fantastic Four: First StepsandSuperman.Meanwhile, KH Studio has made trailers for aSquid Gameseason starring Leonardo DiCaprio and a James Bond movie headlined by Henry Cavill and Margot Robbie. YouTube is hitting Screen Culture and KH Studio with claims of violating its monetization policies. As Deadline notes, creators have to make significant changes if theyre using materials made from others, and videos cant be duplicative or repetitive, or made for the sole purpose of getting views. Misinformation also plays a hand here, since the site forbids content made in a way that could mislead viewers. For example, Screen Cultures Fantastic Fourvideos have teased Julia Garners Silver Surfer and Ralph Inesons Galactus, two characters who havent been revealed in Marvels trailer. KH Studio founder told Deadline his videos are just meant to provide fun what if scenarios, and called it tough to see it grouped under misleading content in the demonetization decision. My goal has always been to explore creative possibilities not to misrepresent real releases. During the initial reporting, Chaudhari took a similar stance, saying most YouTube users know its videos are fake, so theres no real harm done. However, he hasnt responded to Deadline at time of writing. Want more io9 news? House of Olives is a building intended for the Association of Olive Growers of Montenegro as an administrative and educational center. It is also conceived as a meeting place for tourists and devotees of olive fruit products. The available location, the project program, the specific configuration of the terrain, the historical core of the fortified city and the vernacular architecture from the surroundings were noticed as the material from which the original spatial assembly could be composed. The architectural expression is realized according to the principle of group form creating a space rich in visual sequences. All this is related to the existing urban fabric and the traditional setting of the old town courtyards, composed of several buildings that build a mutual functional and aesthetic whole. The design solution is a composition of roofs combined with flat parts. The yard is covered except for a circular opening that allows growth of the olive.Save this picture!Olive oil manufacturing process - The manufacturing process begins with the delivery of olives and their processing into oil which is stored in special stainless-steel tanks located in the storage next to the production. As a by-product of squeezing olives, a pomace appears, which is stored in a special room in the basement. Wardrobes for workers are located on the ground floor of the building. The process of oil packaging takes place in the basement of the building where is a storage for bottles, packaging and forwarding of the finished product. Retrieval of the finished product is done from this floor. Space for tasting and selling products - This space is located on the ground floor and is an important segment in terms of tourist offer because it is planned to sell exclusive products of the highest quality. It is visually connected with the process of oil extraction and the yard, which is one of the essential contents of the building, because there is an olive tree as a central and symbolic motif.Save this picture!Space for education and administration - On the first floor of the building, in accordance with the project task, there is a multifunctional hall intended for permanent education and seminars for all olive growers of Montenegro. The capacity of the hall is 80 visitors. It is related to the administrative part, which consists of three offices for permanent employees. Next to this block there is a kitchenette and a bathroom. Given the educational function of the facility and the openness of the facility to visitors, there is no strict division of zones for work, education and visits. The inspiration for the interior design of the House of Olives was found in the immediate surroundings of Old Town Bar, but with the aim of offering a modern interpretation of traditional elements, such as stone, arch and olive trees. They become the main motifs in the interior of the building. The main experience upon entering are the views that extend towards Old Town Bar, the cultural and architectural heritage of the city of Bar.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Bar, MontenegroLocation to be used only as a reference.
