• Elon Musk says his $1 million giveaways are mainly about grabbing your attention

"It's really just to get attention," Musk said of his $1 million checks at a Sunday event in Wisconsin. Elon Musk handed out $1 million checks to voters again, this time in Wisconsin. It's a controversial tactic that's drawn lawsuits multiple times. For Musk, that's the point, ensuring lots of free media coverage. The world's richest man has plenty of money to spend, and he's using some of it explicitly to court controversy. At a town hall-style event in Wisconsin on Sunday night, Elon Musk said as much as he handed out $1 million checks to two voters who had signed his super PAC's petition opposing "activist judges.""I should say that the reason for the checks, is that it's really just to get attention," the de-facto DOGE leader told the crowd in Green Bay. "It's like, we need to get attention."Ahead of a high-stakes Supreme Court race in Wisconsin, Musk has been reprising a tactic he used in the 2024 presidential election, where he spent hundreds of millions of dollars to support President Donald Trump and other GOP candidates.Wisconsin voters receive $100 for signing Musk's petition, and a lucky few of them win $1 million checks, all paid for by Musk himself. It's one of the most audacious uses of money in politics in recent political memory, one that's drawn lawsuits and controversy along the way. It's illegal to pay people to register to vote, and prosecutors have argued that Musk's scheme breaks that law.As Musk puts it, the checks are essentially an investment in free media coverage, even if that coverage is often negative."Somewhat inevitably, when I do these things, it causes the legacy media to, like, kind of lose their minds, and then they'll run it on every news channel," Musk told the crowd. "And I'm, like, I couldn't pay them to it would cost, like, 10 times more to get the kind of coverage that we get."Later on in the event, a woman in attendance specifically thanked Musk for "bringing attention to what's going on with our Supreme Court here.""It's very important, and I think it would have gotten no attention, not even half of what it's getting now, if you hadn't stepped in. For good or bad, negative press and good press," the attendee said.Recommended video

  • The Supreme Court seems likely to expand religious employers’ right to ignore the law
    www.vox.com
There wasnt a lot of suspense going into Mondays Supreme Court argument in Catholic Charities v. Wisconsin Labor & Industry Review Commission. This Court is typically very sympathetic to Christian organizations that seek religious exemptions from the law, even as it shows less sympathy for other religious groups such as Muslims. As the name of the Catholic Charities case suggests, this case involves a Catholic organization that seeks a religious exemption from a state law in this case, Wisconsins law requiring most employers to pay taxes that fund unemployment benefits for their workers. After Mondays argument, it appears that a lopsided majority of the Court will vote to give Catholic Charities that exemption. All six of the Courts Republicans, plus Democratic Justice Elena Kaga,n seemed to favor that outcome, and the Courts decision could potentially be unanimous. That said, several of the justices, including Republicans Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, did express concerns that there must be some limit on a businesss ability to exempt itself from the law if it claims that its operations are motivated by religion. Roberts, for example, asked whether a group of people who think it is a sin to eat meat could exempt themselves from taxes if they opened a vegetarian restaurant.Similarly, Barrett noted at one point that there is a difference between a nonprofit charity and a for-profit business, suggesting that she may limit the scope of some religious exemptions to nonprofits. The question of whether this Court will set some limit on when religiously motivated organizations can claim an exemption from the law is probably more important than the specific dispute before the justices in Catholic Charities. The Catholic Church claims that it maintains its own internal unemployment benefits system that provides the same maximum weekly benefit rate as the States system. So it appears that, regardless of who prevails before the Supreme Court, Catholic Charities workers will still receive similar benefits. But the Courts decision is unlikely to be limited to the Catholic Church, meaning that workers at religious organizations that do not offer unemployment insurance could lose that benefit altogether. And, if the Courts decision is too broad, it could potentially allow for-profit businesses to thumb their nose at workplace regulations of all kinds, simply by claiming that they object to those regulations on religious grounds. It remains to be seen whether Roberts, Barrett, or some other justice will slip language into the Courts decision that will prevent for-profit companies from dodging unemployment laws, minimum wage laws, workplace safety laws, and similar regulations. If they do not, the Courts decision in Catholic Charities could have dire consequences for many American workers.Whats the specific legal dispute in Catholic Charities?Wisconsin, like every other state, taxes employers to fund benefits for workers who lose their jobs. Like most states, Wisconsins law includes an exemption for church-run nonprofits that are operated primarily for religious purposes. According to the states highest court, this exemption only applies to nonprofits that primarily engage in religious activities such as holding worship services, and not to charities that provide secular services like feeding poor people or caring for people with disabilities even if these secular services are motivated by the charitys faith.Catholic Charities, meanwhile, provides these kinds of secular services and does not proselytize its faith to the people it serves. Significantly, the Catholic Church chooses to operate Catholic Charities as a separate corporation that is distinct from the greater church itself, even though the charitable arm is controlled by church officials. This decision to separately incorporate Catholic Charities provides considerable benefits to the greater church. Most notably, it means that, if Catholic Charities is successfully sued, that lawsuit cannot touch the broader churchs assets. But the churchs decision to make Catholic Charities a separate corporate entity means that this entity is not exempt from the states unemployment law because Catholic Charities itself only provides secular services.Catholic Charities claims that this arrangement is unconstitutional, and that it should be allowed to benefit both from separate incorporation and from the states exemption for organizations operated primarily for religious purposes.Though its lawyers offered three different reasons to rule in their favor, several of the justices suggested that the simplest and most straightforward way to rule in the churchs favor would be to conclude that Wisconsin unconstitutionally discriminates against religious sects that engage in charitable work without proselytizing or otherwise engaging in the kind of religious activity that triggers Wisconsins exemption.Indeed, many of the justices pounced on a disastrous concession by Colin Roth, the lawyer defending Wisconsins regime before the Court. Justice Samuel Alito asked Roth what is the bare minimum Catholic Charities would need to do in order to secure an exemption, and Roth said that a charity which runs a soup kitchen would be exempt if it requires hungry people to say the Lords Prayer before they receive soup, but not if it runs an identical soup kitchen without this requirement. But such a distinction, Kagan warned, discriminates against the Catholic Church specifically because its religious beliefs require it to do charitable works without demanding that the beneficiaries of those works participate in Catholicism. I thought it was pretty fundamental that we dont treat some religions better than other religions, Kagan said.Without the Obama-appointed Kagans vote, its hard to imagine how Wisconsin can win this case. And all six of the Courts Republicans appeared to share Kagans concern. What will happen when the next case involves a more exploitative employer? The Courts 40-year-old decision in Tony and Susan Alamo Foundation v. Secretary of Labor (1985) looms large over Catholic Charities. In that case, a religious organization that was widely described as a cult owned numerous for-profit businesses, including service stations, retail clothing and grocery outlets, hog farms, roofing and electrical construction companies, a recordkeeping company, a motel, and companies engaged in the production and distribution of candy. Workers in these businesses were given no wages or cash salaries, only food, clothing, and shelter. After the federal government sued, claiming violations of minimum wage and overtime laws, the Court rejected the organizations request for a religious exemption from these laws. Among other things, the Court warned that if a religious cult is allowed to pay substandard (or nonexistent) wages, that would undoubtedly give [it] and similar organizations an advantage over their competitors and push employers who must comply with federal law out of the market.Again, the immediate consequences of a decision ruling in favor of Catholic Charities is likely to be minimal, because the Catholic Church has its own unemployment benefits program. But if Catholic Charities is entitled to a religious exemption for the reason offered by Kagan, then it is unclear why some other religious organizations cannot claim an exemption even if it does not provide unemployment benefits.Similarly, if it is unconstitutional for a state to treat religions that do not proselytize differently than religions that do, why can the state discriminate against religions that operate for-profit businesses? As Justice Barrett noted at one point, a church may very well believe that raising money to fund its operations is as essential to its religious mission as the Catholic Church believes that charitable work is to its mission. One possibility is that the Court could create a carve-out specifically for for-profit entities ruling that they cannot seek religious exemptions from the law. This is the rule the Court laid out in United States v. Lee (1982), which held that when followers of a particular sect enter into commercial activity as a matter of choice, the limits they accept on their own conduct as a matter of conscience and faith are not to be superimposed on the statutory schemes which are binding on others in that activity. But the Court also seemed to walk away from Lee in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby (2014), which held that for-profit corporations may seek religious exemptions from federal (although not necessarily state) law. After Mondays oral argument, it seems inevitable that the Court will rule that the Catholic Church can enjoy all the benefits of separately incorporating Catholic Charities, without the costs that normally come along with that decision. If thats all the Court rules, then it is hardly the end of the world for American workers. But it will be very difficult for the Court to write a decision in favor of Catholic Charities that does not open the door to much more exploitative employers receiving exemptions from very basic laws intended to protect workers.See More:

Possible Final Fantasy 9 remake announcement linked to Switch 2 revealGameCentralPublished March 31, 2025 6:02pmUpdated March 31, 2025 6:02pm Final Fantasy 9 will 25 years old in July (Square Enix)Square Enix is putting a lot of effort into promoting the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9, as hopes of a remake reveal this week increase. If youre a third party publisher with a new game to announce then there arent going to be many better opportunities this year, than at the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct on Wednesday. The eyes of the gaming world will all be fixed on that one point and its very likely that it will see a number of new game reveals that are actually multiformat (assuming the Direct covers anything other than first party Nintendo games, which isnt a given). There is already some new circumstantial evidence to suggest that one publisher is getting ready for a big annoucement and that it may be the long-rumoured Final Fantasy 9 remake. The original Final Fantasy 9 was released in 2000 and was the last of the mainline entries on the PS1. Rumours of a remake go back to 2021, but despite constant talk of its existence its never properly leaked.Despite the constant rumours, theres never been any real detail about the remake but hopes have risen again this week, with the launch of a 25th anniversary website and a bunch of new merchandise.Considering some games can see important anniversaries pass by without even a mention, thats quite a big effort for what is not generally regarded as one of the most popular entries in the series. The merch, which includes various action figures, plushies, and the like will be released this summer, but theres no mention on the website of a remake just the anniversary date of July 7.The rumours are not just random 4chan chatter but come from respected insiders, including Jason Schreier and NateTheHate. Also, the original leak mentioned a number of other Square Enix games, all of which have later been officially announced, including difficult to predict titles like a Chrono Cross remaster.More TrendingNone of that means a Final Fantasy 9 remake is definitely happening but if it was announced at the Nintendo Direct on Wednesday it wouldnt be a complete surprise. In terms of the scope of the game, the subject has already been broached by Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P, director of Final Fantasy 14, although still without confirming that a remake is going ahead. He raised doubts as to whether Final Fantasy 9 could be remade with modern visuals in a single release, implying it would need multiple.Considering that, despite critical acclaim, Final Fantasy 7 has not done quite as well as Square Enix hoped its difficult to imagine them expending similar resources on Final Fantasy 9 but, well maybe well find out for sure on Wednesday. To be honest, we wouldve preferred Final Fantasy 6 (Square Enix)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • Taylor Swift and Elon Can Finally Fly Private Without Being Tracked Thanks to New FAA Rule
    gizmodo.com
By AJ Dellinger Published March 31, 2025 | Comments (2) | Elon Musk (in white) boards his private jet JADE GAO/AFP via Getty Images If there is one thing rich people love, its doing things that allow them to take advantage of their inordinate wealth. And if theres one thing they hate, its being held to account for those things. So this new rule from the Federal Aviation Administration is right in their wheelhouse: a recent change to the agencys rules will make it easier for private jet owners to hide their registration information, potentially making it harder to identify and track their movement. Under the FAAs updated policy, aircraft owners will be able to request that ownership information, including the name and address of the person in possession of the jet, be made private and no longer publicly accessible via FAA services. Jet owners will be able to submit a request through the Civil Aviation Registry Electronic Services (CARES) to withhold registration information. And just in case the ask-out system isnt enough, the agency is also evaluating potentially making personally identifiable information of private aircraft owners and operators private by defaultno request necessary. The change comes as part of a mandate under theFAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which gave the agency two years to develop a system that would allow private jet owners and operators to hide their personal information. The bill, which had bipartisan support and primarily focused on expanding the agencys function and improving infrastructure, was signed into law by President Joe Biden in May 2024. The update adds privacy for folks who like to gas up the jet and take off for a long weekend in the Galapagos Islands or wherever the wealthy like to vacation, but it will likely put a dent in the attempts to track the activity of celebrities and CEOs as they burn through fuel with disregard for its consequences. Flight trackers enter the public eye every now and then, perhaps never with more fervent attention than when Elon Musk suspended the Twitter account @ElonJet shortly after purchasing the platform. The account simply published the flight activity of Musks jet, which severely irked the billionaire. At one point, Musk offered the account operator $5,000 to shut it down, which was rejected. The whole incident also gave us a very funny quote from Musk in which he claimed people sharing his flight details were posting his assassination coordinates.Musk is far from the only celebrity who is likely happy to see the new privacy rules in place. Taylor Swift has taken significant heat over her PJ usage, going so far as to file a cease-and-desist against the operator of a flight tracker that logged her travels. Celebs and CEOs have increasingly leaned on private flights in recent years, according to a 2024 study published in Nature, which found that folks with high net worth were increasingly using their jets for short flights. About half of all private flights were under 500km (about 300 miles), and emissions from private trips rose 46% between 2019 and 2023, according to the study. Similarly, a report from The Guardian found that private jets belonging to 200 wealthy folks made 44,739 trips in 2022, generating more carbon emissions than 40,000 average British citizens do over the course of a year. Its surprising that theyd rather not have that information made public.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published March 31, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published March 31, 2025 AJ Dellinger and Matt Novak Published March 29, 2025 By Matt Novak Published March 28, 2025 By Matt Novak Published March 28, 2025 By Kyle Barr Published March 28, 2025

  • Scented Candles and Products Could Create Indoor Air Pollution
    www.discovermagazine.com
Sweetened vanilla, calming lavender, or fragrant jasmine and lotus may fill your home with enticing aromas. But new research shows that the supposed stress-reducing and mood-enhancing effects of scented products may come with unwanted indoor pollution. While these products are widely used to create a cozy atmosphere, their emissions can impact indoor air quality, especially in spaces with limited ventilation, says Nusrat Jung, a civil engineer at Purdue University.Jung became interested in the quality of our indoor atmosphere after walking through grocery store aisles that had scented candles, wax melts, and other fragrance-releasing items. These products are marketed as safe and clean, but we wanted to investigate what else they might be releasing into the air besides pleasant scents, she says.Scented Wax Melts and PollutionIn research published recently in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, Jung and her colleagues examined the effects of scented wax melts that are often advertised as pollution-free. They used a laboratory recreation of a typical home at Purdue filled with sensors that could monitor the kinds of chemicals inside.Scented products have released volatile organic compounds and terpenes chemicals responsible for everything from aromatic essential oils to the skunk-like smell of marijuana. But previous research by Jung and her colleagues revealed that flame-free candles, or wax melts, release more terpenes than candles with flames. Once released, terpenes react with ozone in the air and form nanoparticles. These particles, despite being formed in a non-combustion process, reached levels that pose potential respiratory risks, challenging the perception of scented wax melts as a benign household product, Jung says.Do All Scented Products Cause Indoor Pollution? While the teams recent study looked at flame-free scented candles, previous work from Jung examined the impact that other fragrant products have on indoor air quality. Her team found in an earlier study that hair products like sprays persisted for a while indoors, especially after being exposed to devices like hair curlers or straighteners. In fact, Jungs work shows that scented products in general are significant contributors to indoor pollution. In one study they found that scented products can create more breathable nanoparticles than gas stoves or diesel engines. It may not be limited to homes. Scented products like air fresheners often used in cars release many of the same volatile organic compounds to mask lingering stench all in a relatively smaller area than your average home. But Jung hasnt specifically studied these potential impacts, and said further research would be needed to get a clearer idea of any problems they might be causing.Health Problems from Scented Products The types of health problems these chemicals can cause isnt entirely clear, but they may pose issues for our breathing systems some of them long-term.Some [volatile organic compounds] are classified as hazardous air pollutants, while airborne nanoparticles have been linked to lung inflammation, cardiovascular effects, and other adverse health outcomes, Jung says. She noted that actual exposure from these potentially harmful chemicals might vary based on a number of factors, though.Read More: 5 Eco-Friendly Decorations for the Holiday SeasonWhat to AvoidOther recent research has found homes vary greatly in their amount of indoor air pollution. Ventilation, occupancy patterns, and household location can all effect how polluted homes are. The authors of that paper say that monitoring indoor pollution in your home is becoming increasingly important, as a result. With more time spent working from home, understanding the factors that affect air quality within households is increasingly important, said Owain Rose, a coauthor of the paper, in a press release.Jung has recommended always keeping on exhaust fans such as those above stoves or in bathrooms when using these products. But the best thing would be to avoid hair care products, or scented candles, and waxes altogether.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
