Nintendo Switch 2 third party support may be limited because of lack of devkitsMichael BeckwithPublished April 1, 2025 11:13amUpdated April 1, 2025 11:13am Its hard to believe Nintendo will have no third party games ready for launch (Nintendo)Many smaller developers still dont have Nintendo Switch 2 devkits, which could mean less games at launch than previously thought. There will undoubtedly be at least one major first party game from Nintendo, available alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 when it launches this year. The rest of its launch line-up, though, will probably consist mostly of third party titles from other publishers. This makes sense when you look at previous Nintendo console launches. The original Switch, for example, only had two first party launch titles: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and 1-2-Switch.Thats only a guess though and its currently unknown how many developers have Switch 2 devkits modified consoles needed to make a game but it may be less than first assumed. For context, these rumours originated with an Insider Gaming report from last week, which alleged that Nintendo has a three phase launch plan for the Switch 2.Phase one is said to focus on first party games, while phase two will see games from third parties arrive during the October/November period. The report went so far as to say third party studios arent expecting dev kits to arrive until June, which is also the widely assumed release month for the Switch 2.In a recent video, Digital Foundrys John Linneman corroborated this. While attending this years Game Developers Conference (GDC), he said he had heard many, many, many, many developers are still without kit and Nintendo was very slow at rolling this out to a lot of developers.Does this mean no other studios are able to make Switch 2 games until June? That is extremely unlikely. If this were the case, then those studios would only have a few months to familiarise themselves with the hardware and turn out new games and/or updated ports.Whats more likely is that Nintendo has only granted dev kits to its most trusted partners. Linneman believes this to be the case, adding, It just seems like a lot of medium to small developers still do not have access to development hardware. So Nintendo has been very selective with who they allow to do it [sic].To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a webbrowser thatsupports HTML5videoUp NextFormer GamesBeat writer Imran Khan followed this up over on ResetEra, claiming to have heard that at least one major third party, who he later revealed was Embracer Group, hadnt been sent Switch 2 dev kits because Nintendo deemed them too chaotic at the moment and was fearful of studios receiving dev kits, shutting down, and then losing the kits.Insider Gaming has also clarified its report, saying that its the smaller studios that are lacking dev kits and most of the major third party developers already have them.In addition, Insider Gaming says some, if not all, the dev kits lack 4K output. However, this doesnt necessarily mean the Switch 2 wont support 4K visuals since dev kits often dont match the consoles final specs. What third party games are coming to Nintendo Switch 2?As it stands, very few third party games have been formally announced for Switch 2. Ahead of the consoles reveal, My Time At Portia studio Pathea Games and Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic Games said their next projects will launch for future Nintendo platforms, which may mean some indie studios already have access to Switch 2 devkits.PowerWash Simulator 2 is also reportedly coming to Switch 2, though developer FuturLab has insisted that it has no concrete plans for Nintendos new console at the moment.More TrendingBeyond that, there are plenty of rumours and theories going around. Retail listings suggest that the likes of Tekken 8 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are inbound for Switch 2.Microsoft is said to be one of the consoles biggest supporters, with Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator (presumably the newest one) named as two big Xbox games rumoured to see Switch 2 ports. At the very least, the Switch 2 being more powerful than its predecessor means a lot more games from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One days should finally be ported to Nintendos platform. Its even suggested that the Switch 2s use of upscaling tech will mean it can run the kind of games you see on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, albeit with some compromises. Most third party devs are probably holding off Switch 2 announcements until they get the all clear from Nintendo (Playtonic)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. Image FormafantasmaThe 63rd edition of the Salone del Mobile will take place in Milan from April 8 to 13, 2025. Dating back to 1961, Salone del Mobile is a trade fair that covers a wide range of interior design products. The theme of this edition focuses on exploring the deep connections between humanity and design, aiming to establish the event as a creative platform beyond its commercial functions. The fair also serves as a laboratory for experimentation and the exchange of ideas, where new prototypes for furniture and domestic spaces are presented in settings that bring different narratives about ways of living to life. In addition to the furniture exhibition, the event will feature installations, conferences, and workshops, all taking place over the five days at Milan's Rho Fiera fairgrounds.Bedrooms, living and dining areas, entrance corridors, and service spaces, as well as outdoor areas with their furniture, cupboards, upholstery, tables, and chairs, will set the stage for what will be showcased in most of the exhibition pavilions, as indicated on the Salone Milano Exhibition Map). This year, the exhibition routes within the Fiera Milano pavilions have been optimized to improve accessibility to all brands' products. Four pavilions (13-15 and 22-24) have been redesigned in a loop configuration, with themed pathways to enhance the visitor experience. Among these, a new themed section titled "A Luxury Way" (Pavilions 13-15) will highlight Italy's expertise in crafting timeless objects. Additionally, the biennial lighting exhibition, Euroluce, returns this year, occupying pavilions 4+2 and 10+6.Save this picture!Below, we present a guide to the 2025 Salone del Mobile's special sections, talks, roundtables, and installations alongside the annual furniture fair. x.com
Phantom Blade Zero Director's Path From A Gifted Yale Graduate To Video Game DeveloperS-Game is the development studio behind Phantom Blade Zero, an upcoming samurai Soulslike with Chinese cultural elements. As an AAA project that attracted attention and anticipation following the success of Black Myth: Wukong, this Chinese studio's backstory is a point of interest for many.Recently, CEO and Game Director Liang Qiwei (Soulframe Liang) sat down with PC Gamer to talk about how he refused an offer from a company in New York after graduating from Yale with a master's degree in architecture and returning to China to set up his own indie studio to create video games.Their conversation started with how the online nickname Soulframe was created. Thanks to his hard-to-pronounce Chinese name in English, he got some random idea back in high school. "I just figured out something cool and not-so-usual, something fantasy and something solid coming together."This nickname has been used for so long, actually around 15 years, so he trademarked it in China. If you happen to be a fan of sci-fi shooter Warframe, developed by Digital Extremes, you might already know that its melee-oriented MMORPG sequel,Soulframe, was announced back in 2022. Whoopsie, same name here. The developers tried to reach out to Liang via Tencent to purchase the trademark but with no luck. "No, I'm not selling," he said with laughter.Back to the topic of how Liang chose a career path of creating games, it seems to be rooted in his passion for video games. He grew up as a gamer and started making games during his last couple of years of undergrad at Tsinghua University, a top-two university in China. And spending time to create games was a way to kill time during the first years after studying at Yale. It helped him make friends, some of whom are "from drama school doing set designs." Meanwhile, he was also a "teaching assistant for interactive architecture, which is very close to games."It sounds like being a game developer is a perfect path for Liang to take. In 2011, S-Game was registered. Over the years, the studio has expanded from a four-people team to more than a hundred developers working on Phantom Blade Zero. It was revealed at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase and received a new stunning trailer in February last year, showcasing the battle between the two main characters. Upon its launch, the game will be available on PlayStation 5 and PC, although the release window has not yet been announced.Last October, Soulframe Liang and Art Director Michael Chang talked abouttheir thoughts on the Chinese console market, how it evolved, and where it will head.
