While there were a lot of exciting upcoming Switch 2 games shown off for later in the year, usGame Pass players dont have to wait long at all for some great upcoming Xbox Series X games.South of Midnight is right around the corner, andClair Obscur is not far behind. This weekend, we got creative and fun to give you a nice trio of options on Game Pass you probably didnt get to when they came out. These are the best Game Pass games you should be playing this weekend. The last game Compulsion Games made before South of Midnightwas the misunderstoodWe Happy Few.The initial trailers gave off the impression of a linear, BioShock-like experience which ended up not being the case. That said, if you take We Happy Few for what it is then you can start to appreciate it. Set in an alternate history 1960s England with various sci-fi elements tossed in. What players werent expecting was a first-person survival game with some roguelike elements, but still has a distinct structure. You go through three acts as three different characters who are all trying to escape the city for various reasons. Its not perfect, but certainly worth a revisit before the teams next game to see how it stacks up.Recommended VideosWe Happy Fewis available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.RelatedWho doesnt love a great tactics game to cozy up with over a quiet weekend? Wargroove 2is a beautifully animated game that will easily suck you in thanks to the addictive gameplay. You will need to balance resource gathering, unit recruitment, and battles all at once on the map. While the combat is done with the usual rock-paper-scissors format, Wargroove 2 has its unique groove system where commander units gain buffs each time they take an action that can be cashed out for a special move. Besides the campaign you can also dive into the Conquest mode which offers an endless amount of procedurally generated maps to challenge yourself with.Wargroove 2is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.If the Nintendo news has put you in the mood for something bright, colorful, and full of pure joy then all you need is All You Need is Help. The trailer alone should be enough to sell anyone on how adorable this game is, and going in knowing nothing else is the best way to go. Theres no massive plot twist or anything to spoil, but the puzzles and quirky interactions you and your co-op partners will have is where the game shines. Be aware, howerver, that All You Need is Help is a game that cant be played alone so you will either need someone nearby or be willing to go online to team up to play. All You Need is Helpis available now on PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.Editors Recommendations0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 101 Views

Credit: SpinLaunch Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreOutside of several mentions in the Rocket Report newsletter dating back to 2018, Ars Technica has not devoted too much attention to covering a novel California space company named SpinLaunch. That's because the premise is so outlandish as to almost not feel real. The company aims to build a kinetic launch system that spins a rocket around at speeds up to 4,700 mph (7,500 km/h) before sending it upward toward space. Then, at an altitude of 40 miles (60 km) or so, the rocket would ignite its engines to achieve orbital velocity. Essentially, SpinLaunch wants to yeet things into space. But the company was no joke. After being founded in 2014, it raised more than $150 million over the next decade. It built a prototype accelerator in New Mexico and performed a series of flight tests. The flights reached altitudes of "tens of thousands" of feet, according to the company, and were often accompanied by slickly produced videos.SpinLaunch goes quietFollowing this series of tests, by the end of 2022, the company went mostly quiet. It was not clear whether it ran out of funding, had hit some technical problems in trying to build a larger accelerator, or what. Somewhat ominously, SpinLaunchs founder and chief executive, Jonathan Yaney, was replaced without explanation last May. The new leader would be David Wrenn, then serving as chief operating officer."I am confident in our ability to execute on the companys mission and bring our integrated tech stack of low-cost space solutions to market," Wrenn said at the time. "I look forward to sharing more details about our near- and long-term strategy in the coming months."Words like "tech stack" and "low-cost space solutions" sounded like nebulous corporate speak, and it was not clear what they meant. Nor did Wrenn immediately deliver on that promise, nearly a year ago, to share more details about the company's near- and long-term strategy.Breaking their silenceWrenn and SpinLaunch finally broke their silence this week, and it definitely left some heads spinning. The company made several announcements on Thursday:It plans to build a low-Earth orbit telecommunications constellation, Meridian, with 280 satellitesIt signed a $135 million contract with Europe-based NanoAvionics as a key supplier for this constellationKongsberg Defence & Aerospace will invest $12 million in the Meridian constellationMeridian will be launched on one or two "traditional" rocketsThe company remains committed to kinetic launch, announcing a study of Adak Island, Alaska as a site of a "cutting-edge" launch facilityKinetic launch will, over time, be used to replenish and maintain this constellationIt was a lot to take in at once. But the key point here is that for a decade, the company appeared to be focused on a (potentially) revolutionary method of accelerating rockets into space using a centrifuge but was now pivoting to building a mega-constellation. And initially, at least, this constellation would be launched using plain old chemical rockets. That's a hard pivot. Ars spoke with Wrenn on Thursday afternoon to better understand what is happening here."The launch market is relatively small compared to the economic potential of satellite communication," Wrenn said. "Launch has generally been more of a cost center than a profit center. Satcom will be a much larger piece of the overall industry."He said SpinLaunch began thinking about satellites about five years ago as it developed its launch system, which puts far higher gravitational loads on payloadsliterally thousands of G'sas they spin in the centrifuge."It was quite natural for us," Wrenn said. "We were thinking about how you build satellites for SpinLaunchand how you could deploy and maintain satellites with SpinLaunch. How do you build very high-performing satellites and small form factors?"Can this actually work? The launch market has changed substantially over the last decade. Whereas launch was rare and expensive at the time, thanks largely to the Falcon 9 rocket and SpaceX, it is increasingly ubiquitous. The number of orbital launches, globally, has roughly tripled. A generation of new medium-lift launch vehicles with elements of reuse is coming online. And the small launch business has proven to be economically challenging. It likely would cost SpinLaunch hundreds of millions of dollars, if not more, to develop a full-scale accelerator for orbital launches, and then you need specially built rockets. From the outside, that seems like a difficult business case to close. So the company is diversifying. But can a constellation like Meridian work? Wrenn said the initial plan is to deploy about 250 satellites, each with a mass of 150 pounds (70 kg). The goal is to limit power usage and use modern, miniaturized technology such as "ultra-efficient reflectarray antennas" to pack a lot of capability into a small satellite. More details can be found here.Basically, the company is seeking to launch a constellation with roughly the same data capacity, about 2 "sellable" terabits, as the OneWeb constellation now operated by Eutelsat. But instead of doing this with larger satellites and 20 launches as OneWeb did, Wrenn said the company's constellation of smaller satellites could be lofted by a single large rocket or perhaps two medium-lift rockets. The goal is to fly a demonstration mission in 2026, launch its first commercial satellites no earlier than late 2027, and then begin selling communications services after that, primarily to enterprise (businesses and possibly governments). It seems like a big ask to deliver the same global communications constellation as OneWeb with an order of magnitude fewer launches. But at the same time, the technology in the OneWeb satellites is more than a decade old. There have been a lot of advances made since then.Time will tell whether the new announcement is spin or not.Eric BergerSenior Space EditorEric BergerSenior Space Editor Eric Berger is the senior space editor at Ars Technica, covering everything from astronomy to private space to NASA policy, and author of two books: Liftoff, about the rise of SpaceX; and Reentry, on the development of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon. WWW.BUSINESSINSIDER.COMWarren Buffett's been waiting years for a crash like this — but he might not be buying just yetWarren Buffett famously says to "be greedy when others are fearful" and "when it rains gold, put out the bucket, not the thimble." The legendary bargain hunter has been waiting years for stocks to crash like they did on Thursday but he might not be buying yet.President Donald Trump's declaration of a near-universal 10% tariff on foreign goods, and even steeper import taxes for the "worst offenders" such as China, vaporized $2.4 trillion or nearly a Nvidia's worth of market value from the S&P 500 on Thursday. The benchmark stock index tumbled further on Friday. Some of Buffett's favorite stocks got spanked with Apple, American Express, Bank of America, and Occidental Petroleum all tumbling more than 9%. Buffett didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The downturn is likely to hearten the Berkshire Hathaway CEO, given he's a value investor who seeks to buy businesses at a discount to their worth. He's also known to capitalize on crises, for example when he deployed a full $26 billion across five deals between 2008 and 2009.Buffett wrote in his 2017 shareholder letter that sharp sell-offs can create "extraordinary opportunities" for investors who heed poet Rudyard Kipling's words to "keep your head when all about you are losing theirs."However, surging valuations have priced him out of buying stocks, acquiring businesses, and even repurchasing his own company's stock in recent years.Buffett, 94, has also offloaded a net $158 billion of stocks over the past two calendar years. Berkshire's cash pile has roughly tripled from under $110 billion in September 2022 to $321 billion at the end of 2024 that's bigger than Coca-Cola's market value.Armed with an overflowing war chest, Buffett appears well-placed to wade into the market rout and scoop up stocks on the cheap. The internet certainly agrees social media is rife with comments and memes about Buffett sitting pretty while markets are in chaos.Wall Street has also rewarded Buffett's cash hoarding: Berkshire's stock price is up about 15% this year, trouncing the S&P's near-11% decline. The share surge has added $23 billion to Buffett's personal fortune and vaulted him past the likes of LVMH's Bernard Arnault and Oracle's Larry Ellison into fourth place on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.Yet the famously patient and disciplined investor might wait longer before pouncing."When prices fall, it certainly encourages Buffett to buy unless he views new permanent damage greater than the price discount," Steven Check told Business Insider. He oversees $2 billion of assets as the CEO of Check Capital Management and has attended every in-person Berkshire annual meeting since 1996.Stocks may be cheaper than before, but Check said Buffett will likely "require a much larger drop to do significant buying."Waiting gameBuffett's followers will likely have to wait until Berkshire's meeting in May or its second-quarter portfolio update in August to learn whether the investor topped up his holdings this week.Steve Hanke, a professor of applied economics at Johns Hopkins University who's been teaching Buffett-style valuation to students for decades, told BI he's "watching his next move with the most careful and anxious attention" as it will "tell us a great deal about where he thinks the economy is going.""If he plunges into the market and starts buying, it will signal that he believes the Trump tariffs were nothing more than a minor economic annoyance that created wonderful buying opportunities," he said. Hanke is a former economic advisor to President Ronald Reagan and was the president of Toronto Trust Argentina when it was the world's best-performing mutual fund in 1995.If Buffett holds off, Hanke said it would suggest he's keeping in mind the Smoot-Hawley tariffs of March 1930, which "broke the back of the stock market, and helped to plunge the world into the Great Depression."Hanke's "tentative guess" is that Buffett's knowledge of economic history will lead him to "remain on the sidelines, at least for a while" until the scope of what he's dealing with grows clearer. If the frantic selling in markets continues, Buffett's moment might come sooner rather than later.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 107 Views

WWW.VOX.COMWhy are so many people into astrology?A Vox reader asks: Why do so many people believe in astrology?Astrology has been around as long as people have had problems. Frustrated with their terrestrial existence, humans have looked to the stars for answers. A constellation shaped like a goat, an archer, or a virgin could have just as much insight into life as anyone on Earth maybe even more. Today, pop stars devote entire albums and songs to their Saturn returns, sports fans use the zodiac to predict the Knicks success, and astrology apps are all over millennials and Gen Zs phones, helping to make astrology a reportedly $12 billion industry and growing. But could the way the stars were aligned on the day you come into the world really dictate the rest of your life? Are the millions of people who were born in the same 29-day span as you experiencing life in just the way you are? Does having a birthday in early June really damn you to having the toxic personality of a Gemini? Is Mercury in retrograde really to blame for everything that goes wrong? (That is, aside from the things Geminis are responsible for.) Those larger questions might be unanswerable, but astrologys longevity and popularity arent up for debate. So the better question is: What is it about astrology that makes it so compelling to so many different people? The simple answer might be that people around the world find validation and self-reflection in astrology. The idea that the stars and planets can affect our personal lives and shape who we are as people may never convince its harshest skeptics, but for many it makes as much sense as anything else our confusing, frustrating, thrilling, comedic existence has to offer. I like to use astrology as a map, says Jake Register, an author and astrologer. For Register, the map isnt about the specifics On [this day] youre going to run into your evil ex at [this time] at [this location] its a metaphorical way of reading ones personal journey and opportunities. It shows you different routes to your destination, and it can tell you which routes will be easier or more difficult, Register says. But it cant tell you what kind of traffic to expect. Or whether or not youll get into a fender bender, or if someone else nearby has a car crash moment that will result in you getting delayed. As Register points out, astrology is also not the only map thats available to us its just one at our disposal. This also squares with evolutions within the practice that have turned more toward self-knowledge. While ancient astrology focused heavily on prediction, modern astrology serves primarily as a tool for self-understanding, says Psychic Solas, an Irish psychic intuitive and astrologer who has been working with clients for over 24 years. Echoing Register, Solas said theres an innate human desire to figure out the patterns in our lives and make sense of them, and astrology is one framework zodiac signs, planetary phases, birth charts, etc. that people can use to give events and personality quirks shape and meaning. All of these things ideally help us tell a bigger story about the person we think we are, the person we were, and the person we aspire to be.More often than not, what people get from astrology resembles personal reflection more than a kind of cosmic fortune cookie.Reading horoscopes and taking a look at apps like Co-Star and Sanctuary, you get see assessment and advice that address the positive and negative traits we all possess, the positive and negative behavior that we take part in, and the positive and negative changes we undergo as people.Certain sun signs that is, where the sun was at the time of your birth, which determines the main 12 astrological signs you might recognize have certain qualities. Tauruses are loyal but stubborn. Scorpios are determined but obsessive. Leos are confident but arrogant. Libras are charming but indecisive. These signs belong to groups of elements fire, air, earth, and water that have certain shared traits; for instance, air signs, i.e., Gemini, Libras, and Aquariuses, are sociable and forgiving. Meanwhile, birth charts, which dig deeper into the placement of the planets and stars at the specific time and place of someones first breath, purport to tell us even more. Ascendant and moon signs that is, the sign that was rising and the placement of the moon the moment you were born also have certain characteristics (Scorpio risings, magnetic!), adding further texture to our personalities. And so on and so forth. The gist: All of these things ideally help us tell a bigger story about the person we think we are, the person we were, and the person we aspire to be. Someone might struggle to admit theyre feeling vulnerable, but can more easily acknowledge my Cancer moon is really sensitive today, Solas says. She said that people can use astrology as an avenue to freely address the negative aspects of themselves and the areas of their lives they want to improve. It also allows people to talk about the parts of their personalities that they enjoy, and may allow them to offer themselves grace about the parts they dont. Its not-not a type of therapy, albeit a self-directed, celestial one. As long as astrology exists, though, there will always be skeptics. Im not out here trying to convert anybody, Register says. He simply notes that astrology has been around for millennia and maintained its cultural significance for a reason. Register does not have the desire or the millennia to try and convince someone whos deadset on shooting astrology down. That isnt on his map. A skeptic saying, I dont believe in astrology, is like someone saying, I dont believe in maps, or, I dont believe in instruction manuals. Whether or not you choose to engage with it means nothing, Register says. You can go through life just fine without maps or instruction manuals and figure it all out yourself, but those tools can make things way easier on you.As the zodiac tells us, people are different, and need different things. Registers argument might be convincing enough for some, and it wont be enough for others. Especially if youre a Capricorn. This story was featured in the Explain It to Me newsletter. Sign up here. WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COMSouth of Midnight review beautiful surfaces cant hide thin gameplaySoaring development costs; protracted production cycles; cautious C-suites looking to deliver reliable returns for shareholders: for many reasons, there is a dearth of original programming in big-budget video games. Already this year we have seen the arrival of the seventh mainline Civilization game, the 14th entry in the Assassins Creed franchise, and, most brain-melting of all, the 27th Monster Hunter title. But look: heres a magical-realist tale set in a moody, hurricane-ravaged imagining of the American deep south, whose title, crucially, bears no numerical suffix.South of Midnight makes a brilliantly atmospheric first impression. Winds bludgeon flimsy abodes; rain lashes down on tin roofs; the world is rendered with the macabre and crooked details of a Tim Burton film. Within minutes, a house that of high-school athlete Hazel and her mother, a social worker is carried away along a roiling flooded river. Playing as Hazel, you give chase, bounding with a lanky teenage gait across various platforms until the storm abates. In its wake lie miles of stagnant, fetid swamps. At one grisly point, you explore a farm stacked with the carcasses of pigs who did not survive the typhoon. As a protagonist, Hazel more than holds her own against this vivid and unusual (for video games, at least) world. With mere flicks of her wrists, connected to which are metaphysical scythe-like blades, Hazel rips through reality itself. For this spunky, determined young woman is a Weaver, adept at magically dispelling unsavoury spirits lurking amid the weeping willows and glinting glass bottle trees of her southern home. As a Weaver, she is able to see an enormous cosmic grand tapestry where myth, reality, time and space collide; peering into the past, she learns of ancestors who helped free slaves and of tragic child deaths.Vivid and unusual South of Midnight. Photograph: Xbox Game StudiosSprinting with energy, South of Midnight lays out its imaginative stall: action-packed chapters whisk the player from sweltering bayous to chilly mountains that feel as if they are edging towards Appalachia. The atmosphere is thick at times, laying it on a little too thick: your friendly guide to this folkloric romp is a gigantic catfish who speaks with a distinct Creole drawl about, among other things, the classic southern dish grits. But in the actual playing, South of Midnight is simply thin. With its mostly linear mix of 3D platforming and melee combat, the game evokes PlayStation 2-era titles. Yet neither element has much personality. The brawling looks stylish, ending with brutal finishing moves in which Hazel unravels her wraith-like enemies very fabric of being. Really, it lacks the depth and expressive possibilities of titles such as God of War. Platforming feels floaty until you are vaulting from one conspicuously painted white ledge to another: then it just feels prescriptive and clunky. What great lengths the team of visual artists, sound designers, and scriptwriters at Microsoft-owned studio, Compulsion Games, went to in creating this rugged, earthy place, only to have it undone by gameplay of often mind-numbing smoothness. At various points, you must flee from a nebulous, mist-like entity. But these sequences are so straightforward as to lack any dramatic tension. They repeat many times throughout the games approximately 12-hour duration, only increasing a little in difficulty each time.Other loops grate as the hours stack up: clear this area of oozing corrupted matter (a visual manifestation of the lands pain and trauma); watch another lightly animated flashback. This lovingly illustrated depiction of the south is rich and arresting yet the game is rote. What youre left with is a game whose best ideas are all optics. The fairytale southern style plays out like a modern, YA take on Toni Morrisons fiction while summoning some of the whimsical, damaged beauty of 2012s Beasts of the Southern Wild. The soundtrack is a rambunctious collage of howling blues, twanging folk and lilting jazz. Compulsion Games bottled much southern magic during the making of this seemingly risky gambit for Microsoft, yet failed to take risks where it really mattered: this unique setting deserved more.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 127 Views

WWW.ARCHDAILY.COMBeyond the Prize: Set in Venice, a New Discussion Forum Explores the Meaningful Impact of Architecture AwardsBeyond the Prize: Set in Venice, a New Discussion Forum Explores the Meaningful Impact of Architecture AwardsSave this picture!Ocean Space, Chiesa di San Lorenzo. Image Enrico FioreseA moderated discussion hosted by the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the Holcim Foundation Awards, the EUmies Awards, the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize, the OBEL Award, and the Ammodo Architecture Award will take place in Venice during the opening week of the 19th Architecture Biennale. This consortium of six architecture awards, alongside international architects associated with the prizes, will gather on Friday, May 9, 2025, at TBA21Academy's Ocean Space to discuss the overarching impact of architecture awards and their potential to promote meaningful change. Titled "Beyond the Prize," the event aims to critically reflect on these awards' purpose, trajectory, and potential in the face of contemporary social and environmental challenges.Architecture prizes have grown steadily since the early 20th century, increasing from fewer than twenty before 1960 to an exponential surge from the 1980s onward. This proliferation invites a moment of critical reflection, an opportunity to question what awards embody and symbolize in today's architectural discourse. According to the organizers of Beyond the Prize, it is essential to uphold ethics and principles such as rigor, critical evaluation, and long-term impact to ensure that architecture prizes remain instruments of meaningful recognition and progress. As no single award can fully capture the complexity and diversity of contemporary architecture, the panel emphasizes that collaboration among awards is key to amplifying their impact and fostering knowledge exchange.Save this picture! An award is not merely a recognition, but more importantly, the social cultural circulation to encourage dialogue and debate, which is even more pressing during the difficult times. - Xu Tiantian, Founding Principal Architect, DnA_Design and Architecture Related Article The 15 Winners of the ArchDaily 2025 Building of the Year Awards The discussion will highlight the responsibility of architecture awards to go beyond mere recognition and serve as catalysts for change. The organizers stress that architecture continues to play a crucial role in addressing pressing global challenges, including conflict, climate change, and societal transformations. In this context, awards not only recognize excellence but also help define new standards and shed light on visionary leadership capable of shaping a more sustainable and resilient built environment. The conversation also aligns with this year's Venice Biennale theme, proposed by Carlo Ratti, which focuses on collective intelligence and the need for a fundamental shift in rethinking architectural practice and production.Save this picture! While awards are essential for highlighting architectural excellence, it is crucial to discuss their role in shaping discourse, setting standards, and driving innovation in the field. The current global context demands a reassessment of what we value and reward in architectural practice. - Ivan Blasi, Director, EUmies Awards The "Beyond the Prize" discussion will take place on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at Ocean Space in Venice. Organized in collaboration with Ocean Space, a center dedicated to advancing ocean literacy, research, and advocacy through the arts, the event is supported by TBA21Academy. Moderated by writer, cultural critic, and curator James Taylor-Foster, the forum will feature a 12-person panel, including Farrokh Derakhshani (Aga Khan Award for Architecture), Ivan Blasi (EUmies Awards), Dirk Denison (Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize), Laura Viscovich (Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction), Jesper Eis Eriksen (OBEL Award), Marleen van Driel (Ammodo Architecture Award), Xu Tiantian (DnA_Design and Architecture), Mohsen Mostafavi (Harvard University), Kjetil Thorsen (Snhetta), Marina Tabassum (Marina Tabassum Architects), Rozana Montiel (Rozana Montiel Estudio de Arquitectura), and Andrs Jaque (Office for Political Innovation, Columbia University GSAPP).Save this picture! As Venice prepares to host a diverse array of architectural events starting in May, the "Beyond the Prize" forum proposes an inaugural gathering of representatives from several leading architecture awards to discuss the current role and future potential of architectural accolades.
