What this disastrous week taught us about the Trump presidency
Donald Trumps tariffs were at once predictable and shocking.Predictable, in the sense that Trump had been crystal-clear about wanting across-the-board tariffs during the campaign. Shocking, because they have been implemented in a manner that appears extreme and incompetent even by previous Trump standards. As a result, the world is historically unsettled: One metric of global economic uncertainty shows higher levels of concern than at any point in the 21st century, worse than the 2008 financial crisis and even the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.It turns out that this combination, both predictable and shocking, has become a bit of a theme for the Trump team lately. Consider two other news stories, both of which would be headline-grabbing scandals if it werent for the tariffs.First, Trump has empowered Laura Loomer, a 9/11 conspiracy theorist and self-described proud Islamophobe, to purge top government officials. The head of the National Security Agency, his top deputy, and six staffers on the National Security Council have all been fired this week seemingly at Loomers behest.Second, the Department of Health and Human Services started layoffs on Tuesday that are expected to hit about 10,000 workers. By the end of it, about a quarter of the departments staff will have been cut amid a worrying measles outbreak and the real risk of a bird flu pandemic.Trump telegraphed these moves during the campaign promising to root out the the deep state and vowing to let Robert F. Kennedy Jr. go wild at HHS. But they are shocking, nonetheless. Putting Laura Loomer, of all people, in charge of sensitive national security decisions is nothing short of astonishing. And the sheer scope of the HHS cuts, given the current public health challenges, led my colleague Dylan Scott to describe the situation as an unfolding catastrophe. This, it seems, is the week where we saw the Trump administrations true and unvarnished face. Its not that what happened this week was necessarily worse than what came before it, though the tariffs might well prove to be. Rather, its that the week revealed the true scope and nature of our Trump problem with even some of his supporters starting to openly worry that things have gone badly wrong.Put differently, the last week has shown, in no uncertain terms, that Trump is acting like a mad king. What we just learnedTrump had done shocking and surprising things pretty much since he entered office on January 20. His blatantly political assault on universities, his decision to send innocent Venezuelans to a Salvadoran gulag, his bizarre crusade to make Canada the 51st state, his unlawful efforts to shut down entire federal agencies like USAID all of this made clear that we were in for an unhinged approach to governance. But even after all that, some people thought there still might be constraints. Previous rounds of tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada did not lead Wall Street to panic partly because they were moderated or walked back after implementation. Many conservatives alarmed by Trumps policies reassured themselves that his national security team, like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz, hailed from the GOPs more traditional internationalist wing. Now, there is panic even in these quarters.Wall Street is horrified; the S&P 500 lost more value this week in absolute terms than it did during the entire 2008 financial crisis. Republican stalwarts like Ben Shapiro and Erick Erickson are warning of dire economic and political consequences if Trump stays the course on tariffs. And the notion that the GOP national security professionals might check any of this is no longer credible: This week, Waltz was made to sit in an Oval Office meeting during which Loomer listed off staff members of his to be fired. Even Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said that the tariffs could well be terrible for America. The point is not merely to mock these people or say, I told you so. Rather, its to illustrate that even those who wore blinders about Trump are starting to see whats happening. And whats happening is this: government by mad king. The phrase mad king has been tossed around a lot in the past few weeks, but I think its worth offering a more precise definition. A mad king, in my sense, is not merely a leader who makes bad decisions. Nor is it a literal king who assumed office through heredity rather than, say, free and fair elections.Instead, its one who makes them based on reasons that are out of touch with reality, making sense only in their own mind. And its one who is able to do so with little-to-no constraint thanks, in our case, to the dangerous concentration of power in the executive branch. The events of this week show conclusively that the president fits the definition.Trump decided to detonate the global economy because of his decades-old belief, in defiance of a consensus of economists, that tariffs are the key to American prosperity. No one, not even his previously demonstrated concern for the stock market, could stop him from acting on it. A mad king economic policy.Trump has given partial control over the national security bureaucracy of the worlds greatest military power to a demonstrably unstable conspiracy theorist who once chained herself outside of Twitters headquarters. The people who were supposed to keep Trump in bounds were proven powerless, and (in Waltzs case) outright humiliated. A mad king national security policy.Trump has outsourced public health decisions to an unqualified nepo baby who has embraced nearly every unfounded health theory out there. He then allowed that man to decimate the ranks of our public health bureaucracy in the midst of at least two serious public health crises. The traditionally credentialed individuals in Trumps health team, like NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, have proven no constraint at all. A mad king public health policy. When I say this is the week that Trump became unglued, I thus do not mean that this is the first week where we could see that things are bad or even that we had a mad king problem.Rather, I mean that this is the week where the full scope of the mad king problem so undeniable that even some of Trumps allies on the right began to see it. The only question now is how the country and particularly key members of the Trump coalition will react.See More:

Nintendo Switch 2 fans fear price increase as pre-orders delayed in US
Nintendo Switch 2 fans fear price increase as pre-orders delayed in USGameCentralPublished April 4, 2025 6:38pmUpdated April 4, 2025 6:38pm Why didnt Nintendo just wait a couple of days? (Getty/Nintendo)The conversation around the price of the Switch 2 has taken a sour turn, as Nintendo delays pre-orders in the US due to Donald Trumps tariffs.Although theres considerable upset about the price of Nintendo Switch 2 games and peripherals the cost of the console has been generally accepted as reasonable. It costs 395.99 in the UK and $449.99 in the US, although there is now a serious danger that the latter could be increased.Theres been concern for some time that Donald Trumps constant threats of tariffs, against seemingly every country in the world, would cause disruption in the games industry and now that has been proven true.By coincidence, Trumps so-called Liberation Day, when he planned to announced a raft of new tariffs, was scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 the same day as the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct. It was announced several weeks ago, so Nintendo had plenty of time to postpone, but by not doing so theyve made things much more difficult for themselves. In a statement, Nintendo has said: Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged. This delay is specific to the US, so pre-orders in the UK, Europe, and the rest of the world are unaffected and will go ahead on the My Nintendo Store from April 8.Nintendo hasnt explicitly said a price increase is happening in the US, but thats certainly the implication something which wont go down well considering the anger already surrounding Switch 2 pricing. Most have accepted that the current price of the console is reasonable, but many have been upset at the high price of the game, especially Mario Kart World, whose physical edition costs 75.Although its not how Trump explains it, tariffs are a tax on imports, which companies usually seek to compensate for by raising the price to consumers.Trump has imposed tariffs of 54% on anything coming from China and 24% on Japanese imports. Nintendo was obviously aware of the danger, as they moved much of their console production to Vietnam and Cambodia, but they have been hit with 46% and 49% tariffs, respectively.Diversifying the number of countries that produce their hardware was clearly a long-sighted attempt to avoid problems with US tariffs, with Nintendo having already shipped millions of consoles to North America, in an attempt to get in quick before the tariffs come into play. That makes it all the more baffling that they didnt just delay the Nintendo Direct by a few days, so they could adjust their plans accordingly. Now they are forced to stop pre-orders and potentially raise the price of the console, just two days after announcing it.More TrendingIts a peculiarly silly mistake, that you would have thought a company of Nintendos experience would have easily avoided. But now, not only is the pre-order situation in the US in disarray but any changes to their plans have to be done against the background of fans already complaining about high prices. In theory, none of this should affect any country other than US, by that may not necessarily be the case. The worry for any goods hit by US tariffs is that companies will seek to raise the price worldwide to ensure that the increase is the US is less than it otherwise would be.In that sense, non-US fans should be glad that Nintendo held the Direct when they did as it would now be extremely awkward to increase the price in the rest of the world, especially as pre-orders have already started at some retailers. There is no doubt though, that this is a disastrous start to the Switch 2s life and a rare example of an entirely unforced error from Nintendo. Trump Saves TikTok With Yet Another Extension for Potential Sale
By Matt Novak Published April 4, 2025 | Comments (0) | Donald Trump on the South Lawn of the White House before boarding Marine One in Washington, DC, US, on Thursday, April 3, 2025. Photographer: Francis Chung/Politico/Bloomberg via Getty Images President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will sign another executive order to allow TikTok to continue to operate in the U.S. for 75 days while a deal to sell the social media platform is negotiated. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, the platform he continues to own in defiance of the U.S. Constitutions emoluments clause, which prohibits the president from profiting through his position as the most powerful person in the country. My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress, Trump wrote Friday. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days. Trump, who shared a video on Truth Social Friday that said he was purposely crashing the stock market, wrote that hes trying to work with officials in China, where TikToks parent company Bytedance is based. We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!). This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security! Trump continued. Trumps announcement on Wednesday of shockingly broad tariffs imposed on virtually every country around the world has roiled markets, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down over 1,600 points Friday at the time of this writing. Every country was hit with at least 10% tariffs, but China received an even higher tariff of 34%, on top of the 20% Trump had already imposed. China announced it was retaliating on Friday with its own 24% tariff on U.S. goods, according to the New York Times.Tweet from President Donald Trump about a 75-day extension for the sale of TikTok on April 4, 2025. Screenshot: Truth Social Congress passed a law in 2024, signed by President Joe Biden, that was supposed to force Bytedance to sell TikTok to American interests or it would be banned from operating in the U.S. The platform briefly went dark in the U.S. for a couple of days when the deadline of Jan. 19 passed without a sale, but Trump revived the companys operations by simply declaring he was giving TikTok an extension. That extension was due to expire on April 5, but Trumps new 75-day extension appears to give the company until June 19 to be sold or face a ban. We do not want TikTok to go dark. We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter! Trump wrote on Truth Social in his characteristically weird manner.Several potential buyers have reportedly put in bids for the company, including Amazon, Oracle, CNBC personality Kevin OLeary, and online media brand Mr. Beast, among others. But Bytedance has reportedly said its not interested in selling. The main sticking point appears to be TikToks algorithm, which the Chinese government considers proprietary technology that cant be exported to foreign adversaries like the U.S. Hypothetically, a U.S. entity could buy the TikTok brand without the algorithm, but its not clear whether theres any interest in that. The algorithm is really the whole reason people use TikTok.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published April 4, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published April 4, 2025 By Matt Novak Published April 3, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published April 3, 2025 By Matt Novak Published April 3, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published April 3, 2025

Rachel FerrimanOffice BuildingsBugbrooke, United KingdomArchitects: Corstorphine & WrightYearCompletion year of this architecture project Year: 2025 PhotographsPhotographs:Rachel Ferriman More SpecsLess SpecsSave this picture!Text description provided by the architects. Architects Corstorphine & Wright announce the completion of a new headquarters in Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire for Unusual Rigging. This innovative two-storey building, set on a 4-acre site, is a showcase for cutting-edge circular economy principles and low-carbon design. It also stands out as one of the first new build circular buildings in the UK. With a glulam timber frame and natural biogenic materials, the HQ achieves an impressive EPC A+ rating, producing more energy than it consumes. The building design prioritises functionality and user experience, featuring two rectangular wings connected by a central double-height atrium with a striking staircase, framing a landscaped courtyard. This inviting space serves as the heart of the building, enhancing employee and visitor experience.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Internally, the layout offers a blend of open-plan offices, private meeting rooms, breakout areas, and a canteen, balancing collaboration and privacy while allowing for flexibility as the company evolves. The design follows a fabric-first approach based on Passive House standards to ensure high levels of energy efficiency, whilst also minimising embodied carbon throughout. Biophilic design principles, such as natural planting and organic forms, are seamlessly integrated, promoting a healthier and more productive workplace. Circular economy principles guided the interior fit-out, focusing on low embodied carbon and high reuse potential. Cradle to Cradle certified materials and reversible fixing methods were used to minimise waste, ensuring the building's longevity and sustainability.Save this picture!Following early-stage collaboration with local architect, Walker Associates, Corstorphine & Wright has developed and delivered a variety of sustainable design elements. The building uses renewable energy sources, including rooftop photovoltaics and an air-source heat pump. Materials including cork flooring, recyclable carpet tiles, and Accoya timber cladding reflect a commitment to long-term sustainability. Breathable, natural paints and Cradle to Cradle certified furniture were selected to ensure indoor air quality and ease of disassembly at the end of the building's life. By focusing on reusable materials and low-carbon solutions, Corstorphine & Wright has created a new building that is as functional as it is environmentally responsible.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Hard landscaping is designed as a patchwork grid of reclaimed and reused landscaping materials, including cobblestones saved from the demolition site of the local 150-year-old Northampton Market Square. Soft landscaping is biodiverse and low maintenance, including a new pond to provide additional animal habitats and natural rainwater attenuation. Unusual HQ serves as a test bed for innovative materials and construction methods, including the first-ever use of Breathaboard, a sustainable natural alternative to traditional plasterboard. While circular economy principles often emphasise re-use and retrofitting, Unusual HQ focuses on future material reuse. Rather than relying heavily on reclaimed materials, the building is designed for its components to be disassembled and reused in the future. The building offers an unparalleled example of how modern businesses can adopt sustainable practices while creating a functional and inspiring workspace. It also highlights the complexities of balancing embodied and operational carbon, the limited supply of reused materials, and the need for committed clients to champion this rigorous, forward-thinking approach to architecture.Save this picture!Tom Harper, Managing Director of Unusual Rigging, said: "What a pleasure it has been to have Corstorphine & Wright undertake the design of Unusual's new HQ and research building. From the start, they embraced our vision of building a new office in accordance with the key principles of the circular economy, in many instances challenging conventional assumptions about the structural materials used. At a time of global ecological crises, there are few organisations out there that seem to be demonstrating 'active hope', who are showing that an economy that is truly regenerative and restorative by design is a possibility. It has been an inspiring journey." Jonny Plant, Director at Corstorphine & Wright, said: "Unusual Rigging's new HQ is a pioneering example of circular economy principles and low-energy design. Built with sustainable, biogenic materials, it has been carefully designed for durability and disassembly, ensuring the building can be reused at the end of its life. The project challenges traditional approaches by addressing the 'true cost' of materials, including their social and environmental impact, and serves as a test bed for the future of sustainable, circular architecture. It has been a privilege to deliver this building for Unusual Rigging, and I am deeply proud of what we have collectively achieved."Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire, United KingdomLocation to be used only as a reference. Tipsy Fruit Flies Are More Successful in Mating Than Their Sober Counterparts
Alcohol makes male fruit flies of the species Drosophila melanogaster sexier by stimulating the production of sex pheromones. As a result, male flies are more successful at mating after consuming certain amounts of alcohol. (Image Credit: Anna Schroll)NewsletterSign up for our email newsletter for the latest science newsOur relationship with alcohol is quite complex. While it can serve as a social lubricant or help some individuals relax, excessive intake can lead to addiction and cause various health problems. Alcohol occurs naturally as a byproduct of fermenting sugary fruits and nectars, which is why several animals including insects, monkeys, bats, and even elephants are known to intentionally seek out fermented fruits for their alcohol content. Researchers are fascinated by why some animals can't resist the pull of alcohol and how it might aid them in other ways.Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are especially attracted to the smell of fermenting fruit, often swarming our kitchens during warmer months. D. melanogaster is a commonly used model organism in many fields of research due to its small size, rapid reproduction, and the overlap with the human genome, making them easy to handle while providing meaningful results.A research team from the Departments of Evolutionary Neuroethology and Insect Symbiosis, along with the Olfactory Coding Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, suggests that alcohol significantly impacts mating processes, broadening our understanding of alcohol use across the animal kingdom. The recent study was published in Science Advances. Coping with Alcohol ConsumptionPrevious research has explored why adult fruit flies and larvae are so drawn to alcohol in fermenting fruits. They discovered that virgin males are more attracted to alcohol than males who have recently mated. Researchers also found a neural connection between alcohol consumption and reward pathways in the brain, leading them to propose that virgin D. melanogaster males might use alcohol to cope with sexual rejection by females. This hypothesis has led to a fascinating insight: there are similar genetic pathways in the human brain related to alcohol consumption. This discovery could inform new strategies for addressing drug abuse, addiction, and other neurological conditions.Alcohol Risk and RewardThe new study tests a theory that fruit flies seek alcohol not to deal with rejection, but to increase their chances of mating."In our experiments, we show a direct and positive effect of alcohol consumption on the mating success of male flies. The effect is caused by the fact that alcohol, especially methanol, increases the production of sex pheromones. This in turn makes alcoholic males more attractive to females and ensures a higher mating success rate, whereas the success of drunken male humans with females is likely to be questionable," said first author of the study Ian Keesey, in a press release.Additionally, they found that methanol the alcohol that most boosts mating success is also deadly in high concentrations. As a result, male flies must decide how much exposure to methanol is necessary to enhance their mating chances without causing harm. Neurophysiological studies revealed three neural circuits that maintain a balance between attraction and aversion, providing D. melanogaster with an impressive control mechanism."That different neural pathways with opposite responses to the same odor are combined to balance attraction and aversion based on physiological state is a rarity," Keesey said in the release.Evolving With Their Alcoholic EnvironmentIn the evolutionary battle for mates, outcompeting rival males is a key factor in reproduction. For a species that has evolved over millions of years to coexist with its preferred, microbe-rich, alcoholic environments, it's only natural that females would select males based on how well they interact with this environment."The study provides one of the first comprehensive explanations of alcohol attraction in a model organism, from chemistry to ecology, and from brain to behavior and vice versa. It also emphasizes the importance of considering the natural behavior and ecology of animal models when using them to study physiological and behavioral processes," said Bill Hansson, head of the Department of Evolutionary Neuroethology at the Max Planck Institute, in the news release.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
