ARSTECHNICA.COMAdults told her to move on. Instead, teen won fight to criminalize deepfakes."Victory" Adults told her to move on. Instead, teen won fight to criminalize deepfakes. Here's how one teen plans to fix schools failing kids affected by nudify apps. Ashley Belanger Apr 4, 2025 2:19 pm | 3 Credit: Akiko Aoki | Moment Credit: Akiko Aoki | Moment Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreWhen Francesca Mani was 14 years old, boys at her New Jersey high school used nudify apps to target her and other girls. At the time, adults did not seem to take the harassment seriously, telling her to move on after she demanded more severe consequences than just a single boy's one or two-day suspension.Mani refused to take adults' advice, going over their heads to lawmakers who were more sensitive to her demands. And now, she's won her fight to criminalize deepfakes. On Wednesday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a law that he said would help victims "take a stand against deceptive and dangerous deepfakes" by making it a crime to create or share fake AI nudes of minors or non-consenting adultsas well as deepfakes seeking to meddle with elections or damage any individuals' or corporations' reputations.Under the law, victims targeted by nudify apps like Mani can sue bad actors, collecting up to $1,000 per harmful image created either knowingly or recklessly. New Jersey hopes these "more severe consequences" will deter kids and adults from creating harmful images, as well as emphasize to schoolswhose lax response to fake nudes has been heavily criticizedthat AI-generated nude images depicting minors are illegal and must be taken seriously and reported to police. It imposes a maximum fine of $30,000 on anyone creating or sharing deepfakes for malicious purposes, as well as possible punitive damages if a victim can prove that images were created in willful defiance of the law.Ars could not reach Mani for comment, but she celebrated the win in the governor's press release, saying, "This victory belongs to every woman and teenager told nothing could be done, that it was impossible, and to just move on. Its proof that with the right support, we can create change together."On LinkedIn, her mother, Dorota Maniwho has been working with the governor's office on a commission to protect kids from online harmsthanked lawmakers like Murphy and former New Jersey Assemblyman Herb Conaway, who sponsored the law, for "standing with us."When used maliciously, deepfake technology can dismantle lives, distort reality, and exploit the most vulnerable among us," Conaway said. "Im proud to have sponsored this legislation when I was still in the Assembly, as it will help us keep pace with advancing technology. This is about drawing a clear line between innovation and harm. Its time we take a firm stand to protect individuals from digital deception, ensuring that AI serves to empower our communities.Doing nothing is no longer an option for schools, teen saysAround the country, as cases like Mani's continue to pop up, experts expect that shame prevents most victims from coming forward to flag abuses, suspecting that the problem is much more widespread than media reports suggest.Encode Justice has a tracker monitoring reported cases involving minors, including allowing victims to anonymously report harms around the US. But the true extent of the harm currently remains unknown, as cops warn of a flood of AI child sex images obscuring investigations into real-world child abuse.Confronting this shadowy threat to kids everywhere, Mani was named as one of TIME's most influential people in AI last year due to her advocacy fighting deepfakes. She's not only pressured lawmakers to take strong action to protect vulnerable people, but she's also pushed for change at tech companies and in schools nationwide."When that happened to me and my classmates, we had zero protection whatsoever," Mani told TIME, and neither did other girls around the world who had been targeted and reached out to thank her for fighting for them. "There were so many girls from different states, different countries. And we all had three things in common: the lack of AI school policies, the lack of laws, and the disregard of consent."Yiota Souras, chief legal officer at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, told CBS News last year that protecting teens started with laws that criminalize sharing fake nudes and provide civil remedies, just as New Jersey's law does. That way, "schools would have protocols," she said, and "investigators and law enforcement would have roadmaps on how to investigate" and "what charges to bring."Clarity is urgently needed in schools, advocates say. At Mani's school, the boys who shared the photos had their names shielded and were pulled out of class individually to be interrogated, but victims like Mani had no privacy whatsoever. Their names were blared over the school's loud system, as boys mocked their tears in the hallway. To this day, it's unclear who exactly shared and possibly still has copies of the images, which experts say could haunt Mani throughout her life. And the school's inadequate response was a major reason why Mani decided to take a stand, seemingly viewing the school as a vehicle furthering her harassment."I realized I should stop crying and be mad, because this is unacceptable," Mani told CBS News.Mani pushed for NJ's new law and claimed the win, but she thinks that change must start at schools, where the harassment starts. In her school district, the "harassment, intimidation and bullying" policy was updated to incorporate AI harms, but she thinks schools should go even further. Working with Encode Justice, she is helping to push a plan to fix schools failing kids targeted by nudify apps."My goal is to protect women and childrenand we first need to start with AI school policies, because this is where most of the targeting is happening," Mani told TIME.Encode Justice did not respond to Ars' request to comment. But their plan noted a common pattern in schools throughout the US. Students learn about nudify apps through ads on social mediasuch as Instagram reportedly driving 90 percent of traffic to one such nudify appwhere they can also usually find innocuous photos of classmates to screenshot. Within seconds, the apps can nudify the screenshotted images, which Mani told CBS News then spread "rapid fire" by text message and DMs, and often shared over school networks. To end the abuse, schools need to be prepared, Encode Justice said, especially since "their initial response can sometimes exacerbate the situation."At Mani's school, for example, leadership was criticized for announcing the victims' names over the loudspeaker, which Encode Justice said never should have happened. Another misstep was at a California middle school, which delayed action for four months until parents went to police, Encode Justice said. In Texas, a school failed to stop images from spreading for eight months while a victim pleaded for help from administrators and police who failed to intervene. The longer the delays, the more victims will likely be targeted. In Pennsylvania, a single ninth grader targeted 46 girls before anyone stepped in.Students deserve better, Mani feels, and Encode Justice's plan recommends that all schools create action plans to stop failing students and respond promptly to stop image sharing. That starts with updating policies to ban deepfake sexual imagery, then clearly communicating to students "the seriousness of the issue and the severity of the consequences." Consequences should include identifying all perpetrators and issuing suspensions or expulsions on top of any legal consequences students face, Encode Justice suggested. They also recommend establishing "written procedures to discreetly inform relevant authorities about incidents and to support victims at the start of an investigation on deepfake sexual abuse." And, critically, all teachers must be trained on these new policies."Doing nothing is no longer an option," Mani said.Ashley BelangerSenior Policy ReporterAshley BelangerSenior Policy Reporter Ashley is a senior policy reporter for Ars Technica, dedicated to tracking social impacts of emerging policies and new technologies. WWW.BUSINESSINSIDER.COMI took a $10 flight from Miami to New York, and for that price I'd do it again everydayI might've hit the budget airline jackpot.I have taken plenty of budget flights before, with my previous record being a $50 flight from Miami to Los Angeles in 2021. But while looking for a flight to New York, I found a fare I originally thought to be a scam. The Spirit Airlines flight from Miami International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, a short drive from Manhattan, cost me under $10, although it was limited in some ways. The basic economy ticket meant I couldn't bring or purchase carry-on bags, and there were no refreshments on the flight. It was late, too, which made for a tiring trip, but for $9.97 total, I'd do it again without a doubt.I found the flight while looking through available routes from Miami to New York.I sorted flights from lowest to highest price and was surprised when this popped up on my screen. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider While planning to travel up to the city during the first half of April, I compared dozens of different flight options.I didn't have a defined budget, but I knew I wanted to opt for lower-priced options. Of the budget-friendly airlines, I had traveled with both Spirit and Frontier before and had good experiences, so I was open to both.My priority filter was departure and arrival time. I wanted something that wouldn't interfere with my work schedule. That meant that the earliest flight I could take on a weekday would depart by 7 p.m. and the latest would arrive by 7 a.m.With those filters, and while playing with Google Flights' different filters, sorting, and price comparison tools for the first week of April, a surprising price appeared at the top of my screen. The one-wayThe flight was scheduled to depart Miami at 9:51 p.m. and arrive in New Jersey at 12:59 a.m.I wanted to be flexible in my schedule and get the best deal on my return flight as well, so I waited until later to book my return, which I would also buy as a one-way ticket. At first I wasn't too trusting of the third-party website, but I booked it anyway.I booked the flight after reading reviews of the third-party website online. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider The third-party website offering the $10 fare was called eDreams. I had never heard of it.I knew there were risks associated with booking through third-party retailers. For example, if the airline cancels or delays the flight, it might not be possible to get a refund or reach a customer service representative. After looking up reviews on forum websites like Reddit and Quora, I figured it was safe enough to book the flight through them. After all, if it turned out to be phony, it would only be a $10 gamble.Accepting the risk of booking through a third-party website, which I had never done for flights before, I bought my ticket.Once confirmed, the flight seemed legit. The email from the airline was exactly like the ones I had received before when booking through them directly. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider After receiving the airline's confirmation email, my initial doubts faded. The email looked like others I had received before. Plus,I found it curious that on Spirit's confirmation email, the total for the flight was different than what I actually paid. While only $9.97 left my bank account, in the email, Spirit listed the total as $19.30, which is close to what it would've cost to book through their website.I could only bring a personal item. With my basic economy flight, I could opt to check a bag or select a seat for an extra fee. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider Once the flight was confirmed, I reviewed the conditions of the ultra-cheap fare.Under the airline's basic economy option, I wasn't allowed to bring a carry-on bag, although checked bags were available for purchase for $75.Committed to traveling on as low a budget as possible, I opted to only bring with me a personal item bag, which I was allowed. The bag, defined a backpack or a laptop bag, needed to fit under the seat on the airplane, measuring 18 x 14 x 8 inches at a maximum.I packed a capsule wardrobe with work and casual outfits.I packed all the essentials I needed for a 10-day trip inside the personal-item-sized bag. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider With my trip schedule revolving around going to the office and meeting up with friends in the city after work, I packed a capsule wardrobe of outfits I could dress up or down during the day.I brought a limited color palette that could be worn in different ways, using green as the signature color and light and dark neutrals as the bulk of what I packed. For the 10 days, I packed four white tops and blouses, four darker tops and blouses, three work pants (black, cream, and khaki), two skirts (grey and green), one workout set, two pairs of comfortable, office-friendly shoes, one pair of sneakers, a big work bag, and a smaller purse for going out.I kept toiletries and electronics to a minimum, only bringing products in small pouches and limiting myself to one small bag for the rest of my makeup and toiletries.I also packed strategically, putting all the shoes at the bottom and fitting socks in between them, then arranging clothes in space-saving ways and using the purse for extra storage space within the bag.I wore the other half of my luggage to the airport.I was able to bring seven extra items I couldn't fit in the small bag by wearing them to the airport. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider Wearing my bulkiest items and layering for maximized stuff-bringing, I layered my workout set under a pair of wide-leg jeans and a thick knit sweater, which I topped with a leather blazer (with books and other essentials in every pocket). I also wore a pair of boots and a scarf to the airport. The outfit was efficient and beyond well equipped for the 45-degree weather waiting for me in New Jersey, but it was certainly too hot for the 79-degree Miami that I was departing. I ended up taking off the scarf and jacket in the Miami airport and carrying them along with me during the flight as well.Despite carrying 10 days worth of clothes, my bag fit in the personal item bin.The overstuffed bag might've needed a push to fit, but nevertheless, it met the requirements. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider After much anticipation and preparation including arriving at the airport extra early, identifying items I'd be OK leaving behind and asking my ride to wait until I could confirm my bag fit I dropped my slightly overstuffed bag carrying 10 days worth of clothes into the measuring bin. It fit!I might've had to push it down into the compartment quite a bit in order for it to fit, but after getting a thumbs-up from an airline agent, I was on my way to check in with no luggage fees.Check-in was easy at a surprisingly quiet Miami International Airport. The usually hectic airport was pleasantly calm. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider Having traveled out of Miami International, my home base airport, dozens of times, I was very surprised by how quiet and empty the airport was.It may have been the departure time my flight had been pushed back by about an hour to 10:50 p.m. It was also a middle-of-the-week night, which tends to be quieter, SimpleFlying.com reported.Being able to go through a line-less TSA check-in in under 10 minutes made my travel experience all the better.Once on the plane, the staff was friendly, and the aircraft was clean. The boarding process was seamless, and some of the delays were pushed up, allowing for an earlier departure. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider Once at the gate, the airline personnel were organized, friendly, and eager to start a conversation. One flight attendant asked about the book I was reading. The friendly service was made even better by the seamless boarding process, which took under 30 minutes for all groups.Being in basic economy, I was in the second-to-last group to board. Not many of the people at the gate seemed to board during the first four groups, usually reserved for first- and business-class seats. While seating, the crew made an announcement about the flight not being too crowded and asked passengers not to seat themselves in the empty seats for weight distribution purposes.I didn't select my seat, leaving me with an aisle seat near the back of the plane.I was satisfied with my seat, which I had not paid extra to select. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider I opted out of the airline's seat selection option, as it came with an extra fee, and I was too committed to traveling for under $10.The seat I was assigned was near the back of the plane in an aisle seat, which gave me some extra space. The seats themselves weren't the most comfortable, but they were bearable enough for a three-hour midnight flight. The legroom wasn't too bad, and my bag comfortably fit under the seat.My feet were perhaps a little crammed, being unable to fit under the seat with my bag there. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider Once in my seat, I put my personal item bag under the seat in front of me and made myself comfortable. While the legroom itself wasn't too bad, I didn't have much space for my feet with my luggage under the seat. Thankfully, having the aisle seat meant I could extend my legs a bit to the side during the flight, making it more comfortable. The flight didn't have complimentary snacks or drinks, but they were available for purchase.I eyed the snacks for a while but stuck to my extreme budget for the sake of traveling for $10. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider While the basic economy ticket did not include refreshments, a snack and menu drink were available, including sweet and savory bites, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages, as well as packages offering a combination of all.Unlike what I had expected, the prices of the items were good and not too inflated, although I wish they had been included with the flight.Snacks and soft drinks cost between $3.35 and $5.49, and alcohol ranged from $9.49 for a can of beer to $12.49 for a small bottle of brut sparkling wine.WiFi was also available for purchase on the flight for $8.I thought of getting some tea to help me fall asleep during the flight, but I fell asleep before the crew started offering refreshments. The flight was peaceful, and I slept the entire time. Most passengers around me were also sleeping during the flight. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider Even with the slightly uncomfortable seats, I was able to find a way to make myself comfortable and nap during the flight, as were the people around me. Some rested their heads against the seat in front of them or reclined against the windows.I woke up once we were close to landing as the lights came on and the crew promoted the airline's credit card offers. The most expensive part of the trip was the ride from the airport. The ride was six times the price of the flight, but I didn't expect anything less. Kristine Villarroel/Business Insider Arriving at a quiet Newark Liberty International Airport at around 1:30 a.m., a few minutes earlier than programmed, I found my way to the rideshare lot.The ride cost $66.91 plus tip, but based on other airport rides I've had, I thought the price wasn't too bad.Overall, the experience was great and totally worth its value price. The friendly crew, efficient boarding and arrival, quiet airports, and schedule-friendly timing made the trip everything I needed it to be for a quick trip. If the same route had that price every day, I'd be super-super-commuting0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 84 Visualizações

WWW.VOX.COMWhat this disastrous week taught us about the Trump presidencyDonald Trumps tariffs were at once predictable and shocking.Predictable, in the sense that Trump had been crystal-clear about wanting across-the-board tariffs during the campaign. Shocking, because they have been implemented in a manner that appears extreme and incompetent even by previous Trump standards. As a result, the world is historically unsettled: One metric of global economic uncertainty shows higher levels of concern than at any point in the 21st century, worse than the 2008 financial crisis and even the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.It turns out that this combination, both predictable and shocking, has become a bit of a theme for the Trump team lately. Consider two other news stories, both of which would be headline-grabbing scandals if it werent for the tariffs.First, Trump has empowered Laura Loomer, a 9/11 conspiracy theorist and self-described proud Islamophobe, to purge top government officials. The head of the National Security Agency, his top deputy, and six staffers on the National Security Council have all been fired this week seemingly at Loomers behest.Second, the Department of Health and Human Services started layoffs on Tuesday that are expected to hit about 10,000 workers. By the end of it, about a quarter of the departments staff will have been cut amid a worrying measles outbreak and the real risk of a bird flu pandemic.Trump telegraphed these moves during the campaign promising to root out the the deep state and vowing to let Robert F. Kennedy Jr. go wild at HHS. But they are shocking, nonetheless. Putting Laura Loomer, of all people, in charge of sensitive national security decisions is nothing short of astonishing. And the sheer scope of the HHS cuts, given the current public health challenges, led my colleague Dylan Scott to describe the situation as an unfolding catastrophe. This, it seems, is the week where we saw the Trump administrations true and unvarnished face. Its not that what happened this week was necessarily worse than what came before it, though the tariffs might well prove to be. Rather, its that the week revealed the true scope and nature of our Trump problem with even some of his supporters starting to openly worry that things have gone badly wrong.Put differently, the last week has shown, in no uncertain terms, that Trump is acting like a mad king. What we just learnedTrump had done shocking and surprising things pretty much since he entered office on January 20. His blatantly political assault on universities, his decision to send innocent Venezuelans to a Salvadoran gulag, his bizarre crusade to make Canada the 51st state, his unlawful efforts to shut down entire federal agencies like USAID all of this made clear that we were in for an unhinged approach to governance. But even after all that, some people thought there still might be constraints. Previous rounds of tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada did not lead Wall Street to panic partly because they were moderated or walked back after implementation. Many conservatives alarmed by Trumps policies reassured themselves that his national security team, like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz, hailed from the GOPs more traditional internationalist wing. Now, there is panic even in these quarters.Wall Street is horrified; the S&P 500 lost more value this week in absolute terms than it did during the entire 2008 financial crisis. Republican stalwarts like Ben Shapiro and Erick Erickson are warning of dire economic and political consequences if Trump stays the course on tariffs. And the notion that the GOP national security professionals might check any of this is no longer credible: This week, Waltz was made to sit in an Oval Office meeting during which Loomer listed off staff members of his to be fired. Even Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said that the tariffs could well be terrible for America. The point is not merely to mock these people or say, I told you so. Rather, its to illustrate that even those who wore blinders about Trump are starting to see whats happening. And whats happening is this: government by mad king. The phrase mad king has been tossed around a lot in the past few weeks, but I think its worth offering a more precise definition. A mad king, in my sense, is not merely a leader who makes bad decisions. Nor is it a literal king who assumed office through heredity rather than, say, free and fair elections.Instead, its one who makes them based on reasons that are out of touch with reality, making sense only in their own mind. And its one who is able to do so with little-to-no constraint thanks, in our case, to the dangerous concentration of power in the executive branch. The events of this week show conclusively that the president fits the definition.Trump decided to detonate the global economy because of his decades-old belief, in defiance of a consensus of economists, that tariffs are the key to American prosperity. No one, not even his previously demonstrated concern for the stock market, could stop him from acting on it. A mad king economic policy.Trump has given partial control over the national security bureaucracy of the worlds greatest military power to a demonstrably unstable conspiracy theorist who once chained herself outside of Twitters headquarters. The people who were supposed to keep Trump in bounds were proven powerless, and (in Waltzs case) outright humiliated. A mad king national security policy.Trump has outsourced public health decisions to an unqualified nepo baby who has embraced nearly every unfounded health theory out there. He then allowed that man to decimate the ranks of our public health bureaucracy in the midst of at least two serious public health crises. The traditionally credentialed individuals in Trumps health team, like NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, have proven no constraint at all. A mad king public health policy. When I say this is the week that Trump became unglued, I thus do not mean that this is the first week where we could see that things are bad or even that we had a mad king problem.Rather, I mean that this is the week where the full scope of the mad king problem so undeniable that even some of Trumps allies on the right began to see it. The only question now is how the country and particularly key members of the Trump coalition will react.See More:0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 63 Visualizações

METRO.CO.UKNintendo Switch 2 fans fear price increase as pre-orders delayed in USNintendo Switch 2 fans fear price increase as pre-orders delayed in USGameCentralPublished April 4, 2025 6:38pmUpdated April 4, 2025 6:38pm Why didnt Nintendo just wait a couple of days? (Getty/Nintendo)The conversation around the price of the Switch 2 has taken a sour turn, as Nintendo delays pre-orders in the US due to Donald Trumps tariffs.Although theres considerable upset about the price of Nintendo Switch 2 games and peripherals the cost of the console has been generally accepted as reasonable. It costs 395.99 in the UK and $449.99 in the US, although there is now a serious danger that the latter could be increased.Theres been concern for some time that Donald Trumps constant threats of tariffs, against seemingly every country in the world, would cause disruption in the games industry and now that has been proven true.By coincidence, Trumps so-called Liberation Day, when he planned to announced a raft of new tariffs, was scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 the same day as the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct. It was announced several weeks ago, so Nintendo had plenty of time to postpone, but by not doing so theyve made things much more difficult for themselves. In a statement, Nintendo has said: Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged. This delay is specific to the US, so pre-orders in the UK, Europe, and the rest of the world are unaffected and will go ahead on the My Nintendo Store from April 8.Nintendo hasnt explicitly said a price increase is happening in the US, but thats certainly the implication something which wont go down well considering the anger already surrounding Switch 2 pricing. Most have accepted that the current price of the console is reasonable, but many have been upset at the high price of the game, especially Mario Kart World, whose physical edition costs 75.Although its not how Trump explains it, tariffs are a tax on imports, which companies usually seek to compensate for by raising the price to consumers.Trump has imposed tariffs of 54% on anything coming from China and 24% on Japanese imports. Nintendo was obviously aware of the danger, as they moved much of their console production to Vietnam and Cambodia, but they have been hit with 46% and 49% tariffs, respectively.Diversifying the number of countries that produce their hardware was clearly a long-sighted attempt to avoid problems with US tariffs, with Nintendo having already shipped millions of consoles to North America, in an attempt to get in quick before the tariffs come into play. That makes it all the more baffling that they didnt just delay the Nintendo Direct by a few days, so they could adjust their plans accordingly. Now they are forced to stop pre-orders and potentially raise the price of the console, just two days after announcing it.More TrendingIts a peculiarly silly mistake, that you would have thought a company of Nintendos experience would have easily avoided. But now, not only is the pre-order situation in the US in disarray but any changes to their plans have to be done against the background of fans already complaining about high prices. In theory, none of this should affect any country other than US, by that may not necessarily be the case. The worry for any goods hit by US tariffs is that companies will seek to raise the price worldwide to ensure that the increase is the US is less than it otherwise would be.In that sense, non-US fans should be glad that Nintendo held the Direct when they did as it would now be extremely awkward to increase the price in the rest of the world, especially as pre-orders have already started at some retailers. There is no doubt though, that this is a disastrous start to the Switch 2s life and a rare example of an entirely unforced error from Nintendo. GIZMODO.COMTrump Saves TikTok With Yet Another Extension for Potential SaleBy Matt Novak Published April 4, 2025 | Comments (0) | Donald Trump on the South Lawn of the White House before boarding Marine One in Washington, DC, US, on Thursday, April 3, 2025. Photographer: Francis Chung/Politico/Bloomberg via Getty Images President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will sign another executive order to allow TikTok to continue to operate in the U.S. for 75 days while a deal to sell the social media platform is negotiated. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, the platform he continues to own in defiance of the U.S. Constitutions emoluments clause, which prohibits the president from profiting through his position as the most powerful person in the country. My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress, Trump wrote Friday. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days. Trump, who shared a video on Truth Social Friday that said he was purposely crashing the stock market, wrote that hes trying to work with officials in China, where TikToks parent company Bytedance is based. We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!). This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security! Trump continued. Trumps announcement on Wednesday of shockingly broad tariffs imposed on virtually every country around the world has roiled markets, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down over 1,600 points Friday at the time of this writing. Every country was hit with at least 10% tariffs, but China received an even higher tariff of 34%, on top of the 20% Trump had already imposed. China announced it was retaliating on Friday with its own 24% tariff on U.S. goods, according to the New York Times.Tweet from President Donald Trump about a 75-day extension for the sale of TikTok on April 4, 2025. Screenshot: Truth Social Congress passed a law in 2024, signed by President Joe Biden, that was supposed to force Bytedance to sell TikTok to American interests or it would be banned from operating in the U.S. The platform briefly went dark in the U.S. for a couple of days when the deadline of Jan. 19 passed without a sale, but Trump revived the companys operations by simply declaring he was giving TikTok an extension. That extension was due to expire on April 5, but Trumps new 75-day extension appears to give the company until June 19 to be sold or face a ban. We do not want TikTok to go dark. We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter! Trump wrote on Truth Social in his characteristically weird manner.Several potential buyers have reportedly put in bids for the company, including Amazon, Oracle, CNBC personality Kevin OLeary, and online media brand Mr. Beast, among others. But Bytedance has reportedly said its not interested in selling. The main sticking point appears to be TikToks algorithm, which the Chinese government considers proprietary technology that cant be exported to foreign adversaries like the U.S. Hypothetically, a U.S. entity could buy the TikTok brand without the algorithm, but its not clear whether theres any interest in that. The algorithm is really the whole reason people use TikTok.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published April 4, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published April 4, 2025 By Matt Novak Published April 3, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published April 3, 2025 By Matt Novak Published April 3, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published April 3, 20250 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 89 Visualizações

Architects Corstorphine & Wright announce the completion of a new headquarters in Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire for Unusual Rigging. This innovative two-storey building, set on a 4-acre site, is a showcase for cutting-edge circular economy principles and low-carbon design. It also stands out as one of the first new build circular buildings in the UK. With a glulam timber frame and natural biogenic materials, the HQ achieves an impressive EPC A+ rating, producing more energy than it consumes. The building design prioritises functionality and user experience, featuring two rectangular wings connected by a central double-height atrium with a striking staircase, framing a landscaped courtyard. This inviting space serves as the heart of the building, enhancing employee and visitor experience.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Internally, the layout offers a blend of open-plan offices, private meeting rooms, breakout areas, and a canteen, balancing collaboration and privacy while allowing for flexibility as the company evolves. The design follows a fabric-first approach based on Passive House standards to ensure high levels of energy efficiency, whilst also minimising embodied carbon throughout. Biophilic design principles, such as natural planting and organic forms, are seamlessly integrated, promoting a healthier and more productive workplace. Circular economy principles guided the interior fit-out, focusing on low embodied carbon and high reuse potential. Cradle to Cradle certified materials and reversible fixing methods were used to minimise waste, ensuring the building's longevity and sustainability.Save this picture!Following early-stage collaboration with local architect, Walker Associates, Corstorphine & Wright has developed and delivered a variety of sustainable design elements. The building uses renewable energy sources, including rooftop photovoltaics and an air-source heat pump. Materials including cork flooring, recyclable carpet tiles, and Accoya timber cladding reflect a commitment to long-term sustainability. Breathable, natural paints and Cradle to Cradle certified furniture were selected to ensure indoor air quality and ease of disassembly at the end of the building's life. By focusing on reusable materials and low-carbon solutions, Corstorphine & Wright has created a new building that is as functional as it is environmentally responsible.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Hard landscaping is designed as a patchwork grid of reclaimed and reused landscaping materials, including cobblestones saved from the demolition site of the local 150-year-old Northampton Market Square. Soft landscaping is biodiverse and low maintenance, including a new pond to provide additional animal habitats and natural rainwater attenuation. Unusual HQ serves as a test bed for innovative materials and construction methods, including the first-ever use of Breathaboard, a sustainable natural alternative to traditional plasterboard. While circular economy principles often emphasise re-use and retrofitting, Unusual HQ focuses on future material reuse. Rather than relying heavily on reclaimed materials, the building is designed for its components to be disassembled and reused in the future. The building offers an unparalleled example of how modern businesses can adopt sustainable practices while creating a functional and inspiring workspace. It also highlights the complexities of balancing embodied and operational carbon, the limited supply of reused materials, and the need for committed clients to champion this rigorous, forward-thinking approach to architecture.Save this picture!Tom Harper, Managing Director of Unusual Rigging, said: "What a pleasure it has been to have Corstorphine & Wright undertake the design of Unusual's new HQ and research building. From the start, they embraced our vision of building a new office in accordance with the key principles of the circular economy, in many instances challenging conventional assumptions about the structural materials used. At a time of global ecological crises, there are few organisations out there that seem to be demonstrating 'active hope', who are showing that an economy that is truly regenerative and restorative by design is a possibility. It has been an inspiring journey." Jonny Plant, Director at Corstorphine & Wright, said: "Unusual Rigging's new HQ is a pioneering example of circular economy principles and low-energy design. Built with sustainable, biogenic materials, it has been carefully designed for durability and disassembly, ensuring the building can be reused at the end of its life. The project challenges traditional approaches by addressing the 'true cost' of materials, including their social and environmental impact, and serves as a test bed for the future of sustainable, circular architecture. It has been a privilege to deliver this building for Unusual Rigging, and I am deeply proud of what we have collectively achieved."Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire, United KingdomLocation to be used only as a reference.
