Cyberpunk 2077: The Case for Project Orion to Follow the Sun Ending
Approaching five years on from its infamously troubled launch, Cyberpunk 2077's future is looking bright. With a sequel having been announced by CD Projekt Red back in 2022, when it was still working to stabilize the numerous issues of the base game, it was clear that the developer already had big plans for the franchise. Through various patches and the well-received Phantom Liberty DLC, the studio successfully turned Cyberpunk 2077 around into its current status as one of the best and most immersive RPGs of the modern era.

Switch 2 price won’t increase in response to tariffs, analyst says
One research firms expects the price of Nintendo Switch 2 to hold steady in response to President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, arguing that Nintendo had already baked potential tariffs into the system’s cost. That’s despite Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser downplaying the impact of tariffs on Nintendo’s price decision-making process. Research firm DFC Intelligence said Monday that it was “modeling a 20% price increase over the next two years” for Switch 2. But in updated guidance sent to Polygon from the firm’s CEO David Cole, “the reference to a 20% hardware price increase over the next two years applied to the hardware side in general and not just the Switch.” “In the case of the Switch 2, we believe much of the 20% increase was already baked into the $450 price,” Cole said. “It is not likely Nintendo will raise the price, and if they do, we don’t expect it to be 20%. Also much of that increase is in the form of NOT discounting prices. So not necessarily a price increase but where we model a 20% price decrease in the next year or so we have the prices holding steady.” Nintendo announced the launch price of Switch 2 at $449.99 last Wednesday, but that was before Trump outlined “reciprocal tariffs” on dozens of countries, including territories where Nintendo manufactures its hardware. Trump hit China with an additional 34% duty on Wednesday, and Vietnam, where Nintendo has moved some of its production, with a 46% tariff. Trump also hit Japan, where Nintendo is headquartered, with a 24% tariff on Japanese goods. Trump’s move pushed Nintendo pause Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S., which were planned to open on April 9, while it “assess[ed] the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” DFC Intelligence’s report did not specifically say that the launch price of Switch 2 could creep beyond the previously announced $449.99 asking price, but that hardware prices could go up depending on costs associated with tariffs. While game consoles have traditionally gone down in price, the most recent console generation bucked that trend; Nintendo still sells the Switch at its original launch price of $299.99. Rivals Sony and Microsoft have both raised prices on their current-gen consoles in certain territories. “Additional clarity is expected when Nintendo releases its earnings in May,” analysts said in the report. According to DFC Intelligence’s report, tariffs and uncertain pricing may push Nintendo to scale back its manufacturing, and the research firm lowered its sales forecast for the Switch 2, from 17 million to 15 million units in 2025. But DFC Intelligence still expects Switch 2 to be “the fastest-selling console system ever.” Even with a possible price increase in the U.S., the firm is bullish on Nintendo’s prospects. Switch 2, DFC Intelligence says, “will continue to grow Nintendo’s growth among PC gamers and the core adult market,” and “has the potential to reshape the video game market.” Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to be released on June 5 alongside Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and a long list of third-party and Switch 2 Edition upgraded versions of original Switch games. Update: DFC Intelligence clarified to Polygon its modeling for this report, stating that it concluded that Switch 2 will not rise in price as a result of tariffs. This story has been updated to reflect this clarification.

The LUNO Lamp by Piet Boon Reimagines the Lighting Experience
When we hear the word lamp, a familiar image usually comes to mind – a bulb, a long neck or stand, perhaps a shade. It’s this conventional expectation that makes the LUNO lamp, designed by Amsterdam-based design studio Piet Boon for Italian lighting brand FLOS Bespoke, so compelling. Rather than following tradition, LUNO reimagines what a lamp can be through its innovative, two-part system that redefines how we see, feel, and experience light. The design team drew inspiration from architecture and movement in creating this lighting for FLOS Bespoke, the made-to-order arm of the global Italian lighting brand. Piet Boon and FLOS both share a refined approach to form and function, grounded in a deep understanding of customization, craftsmanship, and the unique needs of each client or space. Together, they’ve crafted a piece that feels contemporary yet timeless, familiar yet completely innovative, that will change the way designers and design-lovers think about light. LUNO features a suspended glass halo, crafted from frosted glass to emit a soft, diffused glow. A counterweight pulley system and ball-joint mechanism attached to the glass “shade” allow for easy adjustments in height and angle, adapting effortlessly to various environments. What sets LUNO apart is its second component: an uplight pedestal that casts its beam upward into the floating halo. The negative space between these two elements creates a sculptural tension, enhancing the perception of light as something both anchored and ethereal, while inviting interaction and spatial awareness. While Piet Boon addresses the purpose of light – its direction, adjustability, and ambiance – in LUNO, it also creates a poetic and quietly futuristic reimagination of what lighting can be. Stunning from every angle, LUNO makes an elegant statement the moment it’s turned on. The LUNO lamp is available exclusively at Studio Piet Boon starting at €4,653. To learn more, visit pietboon.com. Google's Latest Patch Fixes 62 Security Vulnerabilities in Android
Google has released its April 2025 Android Security Bulletin, which includes patches for 62 vulnerabilities affecting Android devices. Two of the fixes address critical zero-day flaws that may have been exploited in "limited, targeted" attacks, according to Google. Zero-days are security vulnerabilities that are exploited before the software developer can identify the flaw and issue a patch. The security update for April includes fixes for a range of issues, many of which elevation of privilege flaws, as well as vulnerabilities with Qualcomm, MediaTek, Arm, and Imagination Technologies components. Two serious exploitsOne of the zero-day exploits (labeled CVE-2024-53197) is an elevation of privilege flaw in the Linux kernel's USB-audio driver for ALSA Devices. According to Bleeping Computer, this vulnerability was identified by Amnesty International's Security Lab in 2024 as part of a chain—along with one flaw fixed in February and another in March—used by Serbian police to target activists. The other zero-day (labeled CVE-2024-53150) is an information disclosure vulnerability in the Android kernel that permits local attackers to gain access to data without the device user's input. If you're an Android user, you should be sure your device is up to date with this latest patch. How to update your AndroidGoogle issues patches for both its Pixel phones and the core Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code and gives manufacturers of other devices—like Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia—advance notice so they can push updates around the same time. If you have an Android, you should get a notification to install an update when one is available. You can also go to About phone or About tablet > Android version to ensure your device is up to date and check your update status (under System > Software update or System update). If a patch is required, follow the prompts to download and install updates. Any device running Android 10 or later may receive both security updates and Google Play system updates. This round of patches applies to AOSP versions 13, 14, and 15 and is split into two parts, the most recent of which is dated 2025-04-05.

UK is going full Minority Report with ‘murder prediction’ research
The Guardian reported that the UK's Ministry of Justice has been developing an algorithm designed to identify people who could become killers. Initially dubbed the "homicide prediction project," this tool used data from UK police forces, possibly including victims and witnesses as well as suspects. Civil liberty watchdog Statewatch discovered the program through Freedom of Information Act requests. Based on the documents acquired by the group, Statewatch claimed that the program developed its prediction tool based on police data about between 100,000 and 500,000 people. Different categories of information shared with the Ministry of Justice appeared to also cover sensitive topics such as mental health, addiction, suicide and disability. "Time and again, research shows that algorithmic systems for ‘predicting’ crime are inherently flawed," Statewatch researcher Sofia Lyall said. "This latest model, which uses data from our institutionally racist police and Home Office, will reinforce and magnify the structural discrimination underpinning the criminal legal system." "This project is being conducted for research purposes only. It has been designed using existing data held by HM Prison and Probation Service and police forces on convicted offenders to help us better understand the risk of people on probation going on to commit serious violence. A report will be published in due course," a representative from the MOJ told The Guardian. Law enforcement has long had a questionable relationship with AI tools. From AI being used to create police reports (bad idea) to misusing programs like ShotSpotter (another bad idea) to adopting tech that poses privacy threats to citizens (also a bad idea), history is not on the side of these being well-implemented technologies. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/uk-is-going-full-minority-report-with-murder-prediction-research-214254968.html?src=rss

Did Colossal Biosciences actually bring dire wolves back from extinction? Scientists say it depends
According to the Center for Biological Diversity, climate change is projected to cause the extinction of over a third of the species of plants and animals in the world in 25 years. But scientists at genetics laboratory Colossal Biosciences are claiming they may have a solution—one they say has resulted in the birth of the first dire wolves in over 10,000 years. Colossal’s website proclaims the lab to be the world’s only company working on “de-extinction,” which it defines as “the process of generating an organism that both resembles and is genetically similar to an extinct species by resurrecting its lost lineage of core genes; engineering natural resistances; and enhancing adaptability that will allow it to thrive in today’s environment of climate change, dwindling resources, disease and human interference.” Breakthroughs have seemed promising so far. In March, it introduced the world to the first ever woolly mice, a stepping stone to the larger goal of eventually bringing back the woolly mammoth. Now, Colossal has announced that it’s brought back the dire wolf. Male dire wolf pups Romulus and Remus were born six months ago, followed by female pup Khaleesi three months later. A statement from Colossal CEO Ben Lamm explained that scientists at Colossal began the process of reconstructing the species by analyzing the “DNA from a 13,000 year old tooth and a 72,000 year old skull.” Comparing the dire wolf DNA to the DNA of its cousin, the grey wolf, the scientists pinpointed 20 differences in 14 genes that caused what they determined to be the most distinguishing features. And by manipulating DNA in the nuclei of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) from grey wolves using CRISPR technology, they could cause the pups to express traits such as a white coat or a larger and stronger body, or change the sound of their howl. The scientists then extracted the edited nuclei and inserted them into denucleated grey wolf egg cells. Those egg cells were then placed in the wombs of a couple of dogs, eventually leading to the births of Romulus, Remus, and later, Khaleesi. At six months old, Romulus and Remus are already four feet long and 80 lbs and have the potential to reach six feet long and 150 lbs. That is around 50 lbs heavier than the average male grey wolf. All three pups are a bright, snowy white. Romulus and Remus at age one month. [Photo: Colossal] But while the pups certainly look the part, many are skeptical about whether the dire wolf has actually been resurrected. A research paper on the lineage of dire wolves published in the leading science journal Nature states that “dire wolves were a highly divergent lineage that split from living canids around 5.7 million years ago.” In other words, the last common ancestor between grey wolves and dire wolves lived around 5.7 million years ago. To put that in context, humans were thought to have evolved only around 315,000 years ago. In fact, the researchers found that grey wolves were more genetically similar to African wild dogs than they were to dire wolves. The paper mentions that one hypothesis for why the two species seem to have similar features is not based on actual genetic similarity, but convergent evolution, a process where species that are not closely related to each other evolve similar traits to respond to similar ecological pressures. This is the same reason why sharks, a type of fish, and dolphins, which are mammals, evolved to have similar body shapes. Beth Shapiro, chief scientific officer at Colossal, said in an interview with NewScientist that grey wolves and dire wolves share 99.5% of their DNA. However, in the context of the grey wolf genome having over 2.4 billion base pairs, that 0.5% difference actually suggests a difference of over 12 million base pairs. Can Colossal really argue, then, that it brought back the dire wolf species with only 20 modifications? In fact, Shapiro argued, how we define species is quite arbitrary. “Species concepts are human classification systems, and everybody can disagree and everyone can be right . . . We are using the morphological species concept and saying, ‘if they look like this animal, then they are the animal.'”

The Flying Sun: Persistent Overhead Emergency Lighting, Delivered by Drone
After dark, crime scenes, accident sites, infrastructure repairs etc. require lighting be set up so workers can see what they're doing. By necessity, these portable light sources aren't much taller than the workers themselves, causing glare and work-obscuring shadows. On top of that, they're cumbersome to set up.U.S. company Freefly Systems has a much better solution. Their Flying Sun 1000 system consists of the company's heavy-lift Alta X drone festooned with 288 LEDs, which can illuminate scenes below as large as 437 feet in diameter, or 137,000 square feet. The LEDs are positioned so that the rotor wash provides cooling.Obviously the light intensity drops off at maximum height, as you can see in the chart below. (A "foot candle" is a unit of light measurement equal to one lumen per square foot.) There are no cables to trip over. The drone's onboard batteries can keep it aloft and lit for five to ten minutes, which is admittedly not that long. For extended operations, the drone can be tethered to a generator on the ground, allowing it to run indefinitely. (The company recommends the drone be brought down and inspected after seven continuous days of flight time.) The company is pitching the system for the aforementioned applications, as well as search-and-rescue operations and security applications. The $60,000 asking price keeps this firmly out of the consumer sector, at least for now. The company also offers a lower-priced $50,000 Flying Sun 500 system, but curiously, they don't list the specification differences between the two models beyond the lower price.
