A massive disruption to the Arctic polar vortex has pushed the ring of wind that circles the North Pole away from its perch and toward Europe. Scientists predict that the migration will cause colder-than-average temperatures in portions of the continent and the eastern United States in the next week. On March 9, the polar vortex began to drift off course when its powerful winds suddenly turned from west to east to blow in the opposite direction. Though this change generally occurs in mid-April, this year's reversal occurred remarkably early based on a blog article made April 3 by NOAA.Scientists Observe Displacement of Arctic Polar VortexAccording to the officials of NOAA, “the polar vortex is not likely to find its normal location above the North Pole.” It is doubtful it will recover its wintertime strength and will ultimately "enter hibernation" over Northern Europe.As the polar vortex fades, temperatures in Northern Europe, portions of Asia, and the eastern United States will be below average. "Temperatures for the last week of March were pretty normal across the eastern US, but the latest forecasts do predict increased chances of below-normal temperatures for the next week," they reported.How the Vortex Disruption Impacts Weather GloballyIf global warming is influencing the polar vortex, it could paradoxically increase the likelihood of catastrophic winter weather outbreaks in the mid-latitudes.Among the options is that the "preferred" position of the polar vortex might be sensitive to local changes in sea ice cover. One study, for instance, connected the decline in sea ice extent in February in the Barents and Kara Seas in the eastern Arctic to a change in the polar vortex toward Eurasia between the 1980s and the 2000s. Along with the vortex shift, winters were colder than usual in Siberia and the mid-latitudes of central Eurasia.Is there a link to climate change?Overland stated, "Every way people have tried to look at this question has produced some evidence for a connection and some evidence against a connection." One study team will find that Arctic sea ice loss is upsetting the atmospheric circulation in ways that result in harsh mid-latitude winters. Another team would contend that the peculiar patterns of air circulation come first and cause both the cold winters over the mid-latitude continents and the warm Arctic. Such is the focus from a hardware perspective that there’s a dedicated C button. While it’s free when the Switch 2 launches, it won’t stay that way forever. As revealed during the Direct, the free window ends on March 31st, 2026. After that, you need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to use it. “You would be able to find out about the NSO subscription there and get a sense of some of the functionality,” said Nintendo of America’s VP of player and product experience, Bill Trinen, to Polygon. If not subscribed, the C button is pretty much useless. Regarding attaching a price to GameChat’s use, Trinen said it’s “part of the overall platform experience” while adding that Nintendo Switch Online is a “critical piece of the Switch 2 experience.” Thus far, Nintendo has confirmed that Expansion Pack subscribers will get Switch 2 upgrades for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom alongside GameCube Classics. One research firms expects the price of Nintendo Switch 2 to hold steady in response to President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, arguing that Nintendo had already baked potential tariffs into the system’s cost. That’s despite Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser downplaying the impact of tariffs on Nintendo’s price decision-making process.Research firm DFC Intelligence said Monday that it was “modeling a 20% price increase over the next two years” for Switch 2. But in updated guidance sent to Polygon from the firm’s CEO David Cole, “the reference to a 20% hardware price increase over the next two years applied to the hardware side in general and not just the Switch.”“In the case of the Switch 2, we believe much of the 20% increase was already baked into the $450 price,” Cole said. “It is not likely Nintendo will raise the price, and if they do, we don’t expect it to be 20%. Also much of that increase is in the form of NOT discounting prices. So not necessarily a price increase but where we model a 20% price decrease in the next year or so we have the prices holding steady.”Nintendo announced the launch price of Switch 2 at $449.99 last Wednesday, but that was before Trump outlined “reciprocal tariffs” on dozens of countries, including territories where Nintendo manufactures its hardware. Trump hit China with an additional 34% duty on Wednesday, and Vietnam, where Nintendo has moved some of its production, with a 46% tariff.
